[Q] Buying an Atrix - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
Looking to buy an Atrix. A couple quick and noob questions.
1) Where should I buy it from? I have an upgrade on AT&T in August, but from all indications it seems the Atrix is pretty underpriced versus things like the SGII and stuff. Go ebay? Any better choices online for a barely used Atrix?
2) Bootloader. I know it is about to be unlocked, and I saw something about maybe an international unlock already available. You guys think there will be plenty of devs for the phone once we get around to getting it unlocked? I don't want a phone as big as the SGII anyways.
From there, do you guys think its a smart idea to get an Atrix when I have an upgrade available soon? My thinking is getting the Atrix off contract, selling my Captivate, then around November or so when a new batch of phones come out on 4G LTE possibly getting one of those. Maybe the Nexus Prime or something by then? What do you guys think?

I can try and opinate on 2 and 3
2 - There already seems to be a lot of devs involved. Not only cyanogen mod is being ported, there are already a list of ROMs on development. And the bootloader is already unlockeable here on this forum
3 - The Atrix may take some time to take off and reach its full potential, it's one of those phones that needs that extra effort from buyers to make it shine. If you're aiming for a buy in november, it's probably best to just wait for the next batch of phones. I bought the atrix cause I plan to keep it for around 2 yrs.

I'm about to buy an atrix too, and I'm getting it from Craigslist for 280 dollars. I'm saving my upgrade for later.
That's the best way to go.

Well here is what I'm thinking:
I can sell the Captivate for ~200, what its going for on Ebay. That puts my Atrix cost down to $100 total pretty much. Then come November, I'm hoping I could resell it for like $200 maybe? Basically would put me at $-100 total cost for the phone, and I'll put the $100 towards my upgrade. So I definitely don't think its a problem to buy it now if its the phone I decided on, because the value seems so low that it isn't going to depreciate as fast as say the SGII from now until it becomes available and such

Anyone else say Craigslist > Ebay for buying the phone? I'm thinking that may be the case as well if prices are that cheap usually

Well I'm going Craigslist because you meet in person, in public, and pop in your sim card to test the device. If it works right then make the transaction.
EBay just seems way to risky to me.

The dev list is growing as we speak! There have been two roms released in the passed two days, both from new devs. Im optimistic. Plus, on cm7 stats, there are 15 devs running cm7 on ATRIX, which makes me optimistic for a future cm7 release. Hope this helps! Tis a great phone.

What should I buy?

I have a verizon contract and my droid x (under warranty) has been having problems. I got the service center to work me up to a droid 3 which seems like a great phone. I love the look but after trying it in the store I decided that I wouldn't really use the keyboard all that much. I would keep it if not for the locked bootloader. I'm planning on selling it to purchase a "new" verizon phone and I should get 200-300 dollars from that. Depending on the phone I may be willing to spend up to 300$ more.
Should I spend that money on a TB? 4g/3g stable? battery life? single core?
Should I purchase some other phone? rezound?
-or-
Should I wait to sell and buy from the next round- google nexus/other?
honestly, I don't need a dual core or 4G. I'd like to not spend too much, and there is an upgrade next december... but for now I'm kind of on the fence.
sounds like you rather have money over a nice phone. well if you wanted the best phones out there right now your choice are rezound, razor (i think rezound is better) and the nexus which should be out very soon.
all will cost you $300 and to me its well worth it.
but heck if money is more important to you, im sure you can get a thunderbolt for dirt cheap now days. Its a GREAT phone and if you root it and put on a custom rom its turns into a hell of a phone.
are the new phones with dual core faster? of course but heck the 4g alone on the thunderbolt makes web surfing a breeze and even though its a single core its still fast phone compared to all other phones in the same generation.
the choice is really yours. but if you rather have your cash then i recommend NOT to visit a Verizon store and to avoid looking at the Rezound screen or you may just end up buying it on the spot, I did.

lol... too late. I'm looking for used ones and if something crops up at the right price I will jump on it.
I actually replaced my DX with a Thunderbolt and really like it. I would just buy a stock Rezound battery for it which works great. The Thunderbolt battery sucks. I can go from morning to well into the evening on the TBolt with the Rezound battery which I would say was comparable to my DXs extended battery life. 4g works wonderfully as well.
Ended up with the rezound. It's a great phone but I got a unit with a couple of issues like the sound bug. I bought it from a second party new and never activated but the way it was setup in the store I don't think I have warranty coverage. Cest lavie. Still have insurance, well see if it bugs me enough to replace.

Will the SGSII be Relevant in 2 years time?

In the UK the SGSII is now £21.50 a month for 200 minutes, 500mb data and 3000 texts.
From what I can tell if I end up with the G model it has basically no development. Part of me choosing an Android phone to replace my iPhone 3GS is to play with new roms. Without them I might as well stick with the iPhone.
Has anyone in the UK dealt with making sure they don't get the G model?
Thank you for any help.
I work in a second hand store in the UK and I've never even seen the G version.
I don't think they sell it here?
Same to any phone
Will any phone be relevant. Im sure phones are going to follow the 'Getting larger' (Thats what she said) scheme now!
Like any phone you buy regardless of manufacturer, ROM development is something you have to research. IMHO, I think the SGS II will be dated in two years like a lot of other devices. ROM development can only take place when the manufacturer has released its Android source code. Samsung and HTC are good at that, but the i9000 (SGS) just recently sprouted a lot of ICS ROM's. Who knows when the SGS II 4G will get them. I'd be looking at the Nexus instead of the 4G.

agreed. nexus devicies in general have a far greater dev following, mostly in part because the source is available so soon. you best bet is a galaxy nexus, if u can afford it. I'm sure u can get a decent one second hand from kijiji or Craigslist
I'd imagine that getting one across the pond is not so easy. Value in the VAT and you'll see why these guys look for cheap deals when possible.
Well the Galaxy S2 can make phone calls so that would be a bonus. I'd say that would make it more relevant long term than a phone from a certain fruity vendor!
/10post
The existing roms wouldn't exactly disappear. But yeah, l'd go with the nexus if you want long-term rom development. Or wait for the sg3; it'd probably hold the devs' interest for two years or so.

Only get a phone based on development if you plan on developing for that phone. Developers will come and go with each new device release
Thank you for the replies.
The main part was that the SGSII will only cost an extra £4 a month compared to what I'm paying now so it's basically getting an android phone for a negligible cost. Any new phone including the nexus will be about an extra £10-15 a month which is too much for me. I don't want to be a cheap skate but £100+ for the phone and then £36 a month for 2 years is way more than £21.50 a month for 2 years.
Really what I want is for it to still be able to get the newest Android versions. I know it's definitely getting/got ICS as well as there being roms for it but is it likely to get Jellybean even if it is through roms?

If you are looking at costs over two years I tend to find the best value option is to go SIM only. For £10 a month you should be able to get equal or perhaps more minutes than if you spend £21.50. That leaves you with £11.50 x 24 = £276 or £138 per year to play with. You could pick up an SG2 for that much. The best bit is that after 12 months you can sell it. As long as you haven't lost more £138 on the handset (which would mean flog it on ebay for £150+ next year) and you can buy a new SG3 (or whatever) on ebay.
Obviously because you aren't tied to a contract the 12 months can be six months or eighteen months if you prefer.

Just had a look on the website and the cheapest is £25 +50 for the handset.
Emailed phones4u to check if it's the not g version and they said its not the g version. With the galaxy nexus set to get jellybean I would imagine the sgs2 will as well.
Is the new official ics update Asop or has it got touch wiz?
Ordered it earlier. It's going to be delivered in the next 48 hours.

Best way to purchase international phone to the states advice?

I think I'd prefer the International version instead of the S4 processor. I'm mostly if not always on Wi-Fi so I don't think 4G LTE will matter much to me.
I'm wondering what others have done in the past and am curious about your experience on buying international phones? Did you guys wait a few months for the price to go down? Where did you purchase your international version of your phone? Etc.
Any advice would be great. Thank you.

I have purchased two SGS IIs and my Note USED from US buyers after they had been around a few months. I would not be considered an"early adopter" by any stretch. More of a "wait and see" who is unhappy with their device and wants to sell. I usually buy when the price hits $150 - $200 below retail new.
I don;t worry about warranties because I am going to void it anyway if I purchased new.
Seems this one will have a few more available. LOL I like it and will lilkely get one later this Spring or early Summer. Development will be in full force and the ROMS should stabilize and the major issues will be resolved .
Not until a device gets in the MAS market do the warts show up. Samsung cannot possibly beta test like thousands of early adopters.
My advice would be WAIT....and see how the people who LIKE it now will feel about it after a few months and What developers develop for it. .
Don't be swayed by those who hate the "design" Use your phone from the inside out not the outside in. I ended up with a White Note because it was available and priced right and hated how attention getting it was and skinned it with a dark decal. Made it look less obtrusive.
Personally I think its better to wait a couple of months for the price to go down. Money isn't something we should spend so lightly, especially on a phone that will be as capable as others.
$1 gets you a reply
Also wait for people to start posting problems with their screens like the Note which was a huge headache.

In my experience, eBay is overpriced for international version. Craigslist is cheaper but unlikely you find an international version. I never tried buying from overseas websites.
I'm lucky enough to visit Hong Kong every summer. Probably pick up s3 there. Though the prices are high I might have to wait... (expecting $600 s2 was about that when I went last year) Annoyed it might not work with T-Mobile though.

FYI: $100 credit is really only worth $25

So far, Motorola's best response to us betrayed Photon owners was that they would buy our devices back for $100. After my initial excitement of Motorola's unending generosity died down, I realized that $100 isn't so generous after all.
-- Sprint will give you $63 for your phone.
-- Samsung will give you $75 for your phone. samsungupgrade.com
-- HTC will give you $75 for your phone. htctradeup.com
-- As of 10/2 used Photons are selling on ebay in good condition for more than $100 (search past listings for Photon 4G)
Essentially, excluding what you can get if you go to the trouble of selling your Photon on ebay, Motorola is giving us an extra $25, since they are requiring us to send in a device that does have some value elsewhere. Is $25 enough for you to stay a Motorola customer? That is certainly up to you. But you should at least be aware that other major phone manufacturers are not far off, and may very well provide better support.

Thanks for the info. If I stay with Android (in spite of horrendous fragmentation), I go back to HTC. If not Android, I'll reconsider WP8 (had used WinMo up until 1.5 years ago).
I love my Photon HW, so really a shame what Moto has done.
I called Sprint and walked into a store asking if the Motorola credit was offered on top of the $63 they give you. They said they are not aware of any Motorola credit.

refer them to this: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/ci/documents/detail/2/motorola-jelly-bean-rebate_en-US
Is it even a credit?
I don't know if getting your rebate is contingent on it or not but on the website they bring up "If your phone is not updated to Jelly Bean we don't want you to miss out." Does this mean that they won't give the rebate if they do update your phone to JB?? Not sure, but I'd watch how they word their rebate contingencies.
It also requires you to purchase, or upgrade to another Motorola. So it's not really a credit, lol. You have to give up your phone, PLUS get another moto device, just to be eligible. I'll never go back to moto simply because they've started doing the stupidest thing ever and designed all they're new phones with built in batteries, my arch nemesis!! lol. They can keep they're money, and I'll keep my atrix.

Agreed ...
It's not 100$ credit but they are actually making you to spend another/more bucks for upgrade ... why we upgrade if they failed to update
I've bought few months back then why i upgrade and spend more bucks for the same failed brand ...

I'm probably switching carriers, and probably going to get another Moto device. I love the radio/antenna/whatever it is that helps with reception, and the feel and build quality. I'm loving the way the droid razr maxx hd looks. I'm loving the other carrier at the moment. I know they screwed us on the Photon, but for the new phones they already seem to be doing better. Samsung took over a year to upgrade Epic 4g to gingerbread. They appear to have learned from that as the galaxy s3 looks to be getting JB before too long. Moto upgraded the Razr to ICS a couple months ago, and the Razrs are all supposed to get JB by the end of the year. The Photon Q is one of the three phones on the first round of devices that get officially unlocked bootloaders. You have to go to a website and enter a device ID to get the files, or something like that. But it has the unlockable bootloader like the developer edition. I know VZ hates unlocked bootloaders, but other than the RAZR maxx, I'll be looking at the next nexus devices. I don't dev much anyway. I have always like stock kernels with custom ROMs. They have always seemed more stable to me anyway.
I guess my point is this bad experience isn't enough for me to give up on Moto, because I'm not willing to go back to flimsy loss of signal phones, and I think in the future they'll be better. Just takes some time for them to get their crap together with the problems and then the Google purchase.

Unfortunately for Sprint users many of your pluses don't apply. I haven't had a good signal in at least 4 months. I keep hearing the wonderful line "we're doing networks upgrades so there's nothing we can do ". The other day it took 7 minutes to make a phone call when I had a strong signal showing.
In addition to that the photon is now 2 OS upgrades behind. Many of us purchased a Motorola phone because of the promised upgrades. Piss poor customer service makes many of us quite hostile and unwilling to forgive the lies.
I guess I didn't realize that you had to turn your phone in to get the $100. That is pretty worthless then.

Sprint wouldn't be. It's not a Motorola credit, it's a Verizon credit.
To qualify, you have to trade in your phone, as others have said... and you have to buy a Verizon-exclusive Motorola smartphone. The plan will be fully realized by the end of the month -- it is not currently available in any case. But I imagine it will actually be done through Verizon. That is, you sign up for service, buy the phone, and Verizon gives you the Motorola form, and you mail in your proof of purchase, the barcode from the phone box with ESN/IMEI, and your Photon/Atrix/Electrify, and Motorola mails you $100 (in the form of a Visa/MC gift card with nasty fees of course!). US Cellular does a similar song and dance with its rebates. BTW, US Cellular has a standard rebate of $100 off a new smartphone. This can vary but that's the usual amount. Although their advertised prices are minus this rebate, so you pay the advertised price plus $100 up front and get the $100 in two months. I was lucky and got an instant rebate sale -- Electrify for $150 out the door. At tax time. Yeah, I scored. :victory:

I really need verification on this! If anybody has a PDF or screencap PM me. If this is true then we may be able to step things up a bit.
Hello,
I got absurdly lucky and sold my Photon for $250. I included a 32gb SD Card, and Otterbox Defender. I still cannot believe I got that as Sprint offered me $67 for it. I am still so pissed about ICS as I actually was going to hold on to the phone even though I purchased an iPhone 5.
Cheers,

moto photon replacement?

was just wondering, i ran my phone over the other day, seeming to be having several issues.. sprint wants 100 to replace even thought they buy em from ya for 40.00
anyways friend has one for 25 bucks, is there a way to flash it instead of taking it to sprint. iknow the replacement is stock not worried about root, its nice i also know that unless 2.3,4 you cant unlock the bootloader and all pertaining that
flashed a few other phones but want to be sure before i make a 2 year decision lol.
thanX in advance.

If you just want to activate it and it is a Sprint phone with a clean esn, you can do that from the website. I bought a used phone from swappa and activated it without taking it in.

If your friend just kept it stock the whole time, chances are that it is 2.3.5 which means you cannot flash to CM 10.1. But either way you need to contact Sprint so that they can update the MEID of your friends device to be tied to your account. You can do this over the phone but to me the bigger concern is whether you can flash it or not. At this point, the Photon 4G is at end of life support. Personally I am so sick of Gingerbread and I can't wait until my LG G2 comes hopefully by the end of this week or early next week so I can get some triband LTE and ditch Wimax forever.
Are you asking if you can use it with some other provider? If that's the question, the answer is yes by flashing the Japanese (KDDI) radio it will unlock the GSM capability then it can be used with AT&T/T-Mobile/etc, any carrier that uses a SIM card. No need to keep using Sprint with the Photon, basically, there are options available.
As for using something newer like Jelly Bean or even Kit Kat, I doubt we'll see any more development than has already been done over the past 2+ years now. The Photon is a nice device for its time but, it's long past its prime. If you can get another one for $25 I'd say go for it since you already know the limitations of owning one as long as the replacement one is in good condition, etc.
If you like the Photon, stick with it, if not spend the money towards something more current.

Th3Bill is back and is gonna try to get 4.3 and 4.4 working on our Photons. So it's not quite dead yet!
Yah, I know, and it's capable to a degree especially Kit Kat which should run well on lower spec devices. Thing is, people need to realize when Google says "lower spec devices" they mean BRAND NEW lower spec devices which are way more powerful than lower spec devices that are 2+ years old so...
While the Photon certainly has some life left in it, the (still) locked bootloader for most people is still going to be too problematic to do anything serious with the device unfortunately. I just had a chance to get one in great shape earlier for $50 and passed on it, I'm not interested in doing this whole older hardware thing anymore.
I had a Galaxy S4 Active recently and ended up selling it, it's the best smartphone I've ever owned (of over 40 in the past decade or so) and now I'm missing it something fierce.
out of curiosity since the photon has been gone for a while and not produced. if i was to do the insurance replacement for $100 what phone would i get back?
would they send me a used/refurbed photon back? or upgrade me to a different phone?
I've heard of people doing insurance claims and they get a choice of phones to pick from (not a top of the line though).
What would you suggest i say at the sprint store to find out if theres a different phone option?
