[Q] Would a factory reset help or hurt? (botched beta 4-5) - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. These posts are all too common but I really am distressed here (I'm worried I bricked my phone and don't have technical skill to bring it back to life), and please, any help would be really appreciated.
Here's the last thing that happened before I acted stupidly:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15708254&postcount=394
long story short: tried to update to new cwm but couldn't do the step to delete a file in system/etc called install-recovery
I could not find a way to delete the file I needed to delete, install-recovery, I just gave up and thought "well, whatever. I have tenfar's older CWM on my phone anyway, and I never end up NEEDING it because everything goes fine if I follow the directions (ironic thing to think when not following directions).
So I continued following kennethpenn's guide on brief mobile, doing all steps except for #2:
Prerequisites
Unlocked bootloader
CWM recovery
External SD card
Gingerbread zip (download above)
Backup PDS partition
Backup data and applications
Installation
1.Unlock your bootloader
2.Download CWM recovery and flash it
3.Mount your device to USB
4.Put the Gingerbread .zip file on your external SDcard
5.Click “install zip from sdcard”
6.Choose zip from sdcard
7.Pick the gingerbread .zip
8.Install it!
9.Reboot
Click to collapse
I was definitely rooted, and am pretty confident that I unlocked the bootloader, because it took me a long time but I followed all the steps and got all the right responses on the phone and it said (and still says) Unlocked in the upper left corner during bootup, and I learned a lot this morning and was feeling good...
Flashing went fine, until after I rebooted in the recovery menu, and.... boot loops; the M would swirl around, turn dead, come back 3 seconds later, go dead again, on and on, until I did a battery pull
One last thing that I didn't think about now but may be a huge reason for the problem: I was on 1.8.3 but deodxed and running the latest "P-ROM" Ginger Blur.
So I can get into the fastboot, stock android recovery, and like ten other options during bootup. What I want to do is just start fresh because it'll set me back a lot, but right now I just want a functional phone. So can I do a factory reset in the boot menu, or would that just permanently brick it forever considering I unlocked the boot-loader, was themed, etc etc?
Thanks - any suggestions greatly appreciated.
To all the other newbs that love this stuff, but don't really know wtf you're doing, the moral of my story is "follow the directions EXACTLY and if you're unsure that you can do that, then don't proceed.

Are you asking me or a mod? Either way, why?
I'm seriously in a bad spot without my phone, I use it for everything, even just the GPS I need for work, so my life will be really ****ty rather quickly if I don't get it working soon.

No, no updates. After posting my question I put all my atrix stuff to the side and slipped my sim card into one of those ugly Nokia bar phones everyone had in the late '90s - early '00s. I was so frustrated that I had to walk away from it for a while.
Thanks for the offer mramirezusa, if you or anyone else could please give me some help, I'd really really appreciate it

Don't worry yours seem fixable I writing instructions in a second post

I can't wait to have my phone again! It's only been two days but there have been so many times I needed to use it, I never realized how dependent I am on my phone. It's going to be so great, like when you go to a bad camp for summer, and you're hot and covered in bugs the whole time, and when you finally ge back home to all the creature comforts, like air conditioning, TV, computers, video games, microwaves, etc, and you feel like "this is absolutely amazing!!" and appreciate everything anew

Ok last part:
download and unzip in a new folder the file in the following link:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MTXAXY3T
6. Phone ready in fastboot
7. Run repair.bat
8. Press on each step "any key to continue" until the phone reboot

Should I have any particular program running on the PC? Just finished downloading I'm a happy man either way, but what is this anyway, back to factory stock or updated?

No you dont need any additional program. Stock 1.83 so then you can proceed according to GB.

i've done this mod that exact same way on my aria with 4 different roms with no issues at all every time.
you really just need to save the qwerty.kl file and push it to the phone. reboot into recovery, go to the partitions menu, mount the system partition, push the file via adb, reboot your phone and voila.

I've done that. The qwerty.kl method just simply isn't working for some people.
This worked for me
Couldn't figure out how to add attachments to this post, and it won't let me add an external link since it's a new forum account. google ojwake-signed.zip or something.
Steps: Load file to SD card, boot in to recovery mode, install zip, locate this zip on flash card, reboot.
(ojwake-signed.zip)
Don't remember where i got this, but kudos to that guy!

Just to make it even easier on you
EDIT-Short Version...Download file from link above
-:Have Clockwork Recovery Installed and know how to use ADB:-
-DOWNLOAD ATTACHED to linked post qwerty.kl (may need 7zip to extract file from archive...)
-BOOT into CLOCKWORK recovery with NO USB PLUGGED INto phone!!!
-PARTITIONS>MOUNT /SYSTEM
-adb push qwerty.kl /system/usr/keylayout|adb reboot
As far as I know, this ridiculously simply method of pushing qwerty.kl has worked for everyone except the few that didn't boot into clockwork correctly, once they booted into clockwork correctly it then worked for them.
I updated the instructions to be crystal clear for all you noobs. If pushing a file to your android device is too painfully complicated for you, I suggest you read/search more and figure out what you are actually doing.
Neverwhere10's steps are just as painfully complicated, but at least he is providing some constructive input.
Thanks!
Worthless thread is worthless.

There is also a setting in one of the menus if you are using any of attn1's cm roms for this same thing. I currently have my aria set this way and I am using cm008 as of right now.

lmao, that's great advice, take it.
I've got your answer.
Download 2.1 Leak v3
Rename it to something you'll remember.
Copy to root of sdcard.
Boot into recovery
When your done with that,
In ADB run this command.
Code:
/sbin/recovery --wipe_data
Wait about 2 minutes. CRTL+C (Win) CTRL+Z (Mac).
Then,
Code:
/sbin/recovery --update_package=SDCARD:[I]romname[/I].zip
Wait about 4-5 minutes.
After about 5-6 minutes, pull the battery.
Turn it on
You're back on 2.1 Stock (w/o root)!

The leak series of HTC PB00IMG.zip files (Leak-V3, Leak-V2, Root-ROM, etc) are not signed the way that Amon_RA (e.g. SignApk or jarsigner) expects them, so the instructions you provide above clearly will not work. You can not flash PB00IMG.zip - style files using Amon_RA - they will fail signature verification, and moreover have no META-INF/com/google/android/update-script to provide updating instructions to /sbin/recovery.
You can use the above method with other "dev" ROMs, including the "FlashBack21" ROM, but doing the "battery pull" as you described is not desirable if you use the FlashBack21 ROM that flashes the radio. (It is possible that the trackball "click"/"press" still works - the OP did not say - and since Amon_RA starts on the "reboot" menu, a battery pull may not be necessary).
It would be better to reference the original instructions, which provide more detailed instructions & cautions than you provided above - and also give attribution to the person that disclosed it in the first place, rather than "I've got your answer".

I'm not trying to jump on you just to be mean-spirited - if you want to suggest something to someone, by all means go ahead and do so; but if you have not personally tried the method yourself and verified that it works you should probably add that as a disclaimer.
You did offer to try and lend a hand, and that is better than what I did (initially).

Unlocker my Bootloader, Want root, NOT custom roms

So I unlocked my bootloader via the HTC unlocker and I would like to know the easiest way to root. Can someone link me to the right thread please?
I dont want to flash custom roms because I like the stock (sue me). I just want to be able to delete all the crap T-mobile pre-loaded onto it, and some of the things that constantly run and kill me battery.
I know the bootloader unlock was the first step, now I need help with the second. BTW this is my first time so be gentle...

First make sure you have the following downloaded and copied to the root of your sdcard.
Follow this per the letter and you shouldn't have any problems.
Download the attached files to the root of your external sdcard. This works best if you have a seperate sdcard reader.
Shut off your phone.
Remove the battery from your phone (just to be sure that it's off.)
Place the battery back in.
Put in your sdcard.
Place the battery cover back on.
Hold the VOLUME DOWN button while pressing POWER and HOLD BOTH until your device powers up.
You should now see a prompt if you want to upgrade your Recovery.
Upgrade or update (whatever it is) your recovery
Now go ahead and select Recovery from the menu.
Select the option to install from sdcard.
Locate su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip and flash it.
Reboot your rooted phone.

Alright...
I cooked this up in line two minutes.
All you need to do is have the drivers installed first and USB Debugging enabled.
Unzip and run the Flash.bat as Administrator.
I hope it'll help.
Binary is the man! Thanks for all the tips on the forum. I've only posted a few times and have never rooted a phone either. I think I might try this. Wish there was an easy way to get rid of most of the sense crap and make this baby fly and have better battery. Any suggestions?

You can root and install a custom rom like BeastMod. A lot of stuff was removed and might meet your requirements.
Thanks! So the noobs.zip you attached will do what you explained earlier? Do we still need the 2 files on the root of our sd card? Just run noobs.zip from puter?

This should do everything for you.
All you need to do is have USB Debugging enabled in settings, plug it into your computer and run the bat script.
What it will do.
It'll reboot your phone and go into a white screen and send the recovery to your phone. Afterwards it will write to the nand. After that's finished it will reboot your phone automatically. You will still need to reboot to recovery after it's booted up and install the su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip file. Make sure you have that on your INTERNAL sdcard if you don't have an EXTERNAL. The 5.0.2.7 recovery is the only recovery that supports the internal sdcard thus it is the only recovery that will work for you.

[Q] Uses for bricked X2...

Hey guys, I think I'm in trouble. Two weeks ago I got an X2, and soon after discovered the Modding and Root world. Needless to say I ended bricking with Rom Manager. Obviously a user error... Anyway, I was wondering if there might be somehow I could use the memory on the phone as an external hard drive or something. Could I install the zipped .sbf file to SanDisk, and if I find a way to get back in to recovery....you see where I'm going with this.
Thanks again
Have you tried SBF'ing it back to stock using RSDLite?

Yes I have. I rooted it initially and everything was fine until I lagged the system somehow with certain settings. The learning curve is not a big one, but its still existent. Anyway, I wiped and flashed .sbf perfectly. It was only when I rooted the second time and opted for a Mod where things went badly...I guess. No warning, the device just shuts off and comes back to the boot screen(Motorola emblem). No fastboot option or anything.

You'd be surprised by how many people on ebay and other sites want bricked devices. Some use them for parts and others just want to screw around with them.

I'd be very surprised if this was truly bricked. When you rooted the second time, did you get bootstrap recovery installed? If so you can pull the battery, leave it turned off and plug it into a wall charger. It should power itself on and take you right to ClockWorkMod recovery and from there you could Use ADB to push a working rom and start off on a clean slate (or restore a nandroid if you made one before flashing mods.)
Otherwise, I would suggest continuing trying to get in the device in RSD mode. Sometimes these phones can be finicky, I know when I first started messing with Androids it would often take several times to get to the Bootloader options rather than just powering on the device.
What was the questionable mod you used?

Have you tried following my tutorial on SBF? Try holding the Volume Up button and see if you get to the "Starting RSD" (or something like that). You should be able to SBF from there.
The link is in my signature or here: HowTo: Perform a SBF ("factory restore") of your Motorola Droid X2
Ciao!
As long as the phone turns on you can fix it. SBF will fix your issue.

If it truly is bricked, you could use it for batting practice. I've wanted to do that to a working X2 many times, so I know I would if it were bricked
Sbf sbf S B F
make sure u charge ur battery full up before flashing sbf file
Like moon said power button and volume up starts rsd protocol
If that doesn't work there is also a thing called ezSBF someone can tell ya bout

I've tried the fastboot(volume button) method and there is nothing. No response what so ever. I've never even heard of EZsbf, but I'm gonna try it out. Oh, whoever asked about the MOD a while ago....it was gingerbread I think. The only thing I wanted was to overclock my cpu's just a bit, but ended up getting in way over my head very quickly. The light comes on when the phone is plugged in with no battery and stays on. Other than that no change. Hey thanks guys, alot!
No not fast boot
That shows when u press power and volume down together(u need to hold both buttons down)
Instead
PRESS POWER BUTTON AND VOLUME UP AT SAME TIME and hold them BOTH for about 10seconds. U should see "starting RSD protocol..." at the top of ur screen
If u don't then u probly need to charge ur battery
Also
We have NO WAY to over clock due to our locked bootloader. You need to be able to install a custom kernel to be able to over clock and we can't do that.
I recommend not to try any mods or anything outside of this DROIDX2 development forum(don't even use stuff made for original X it will mess ur phone up. And definitely stay away from atrix, photon, etc...even if something says "universal mod/tweak/hack" its most likely gonna break ur x2 cuz the x2 is just a finnicky ass phone lol)
Good luck!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2 Beta-6
You need to reinsert the battery, keep the phone off, then plug it in to the wall charger. If you had BSR installed it'll boot into recovery.
Thank you so much guys, all of you. I'm back in to my X2!!!

So what exactly did you need to do?
Were u just missing a step?
Or did u try something new?
This way someone else who hits the same snag can know a solution
Congrats! Bringing the x2 back from the dead is always fun lol

Yeah, you're right! Still new to threading! I was able to initialize DSP Restore, but I didn't have bootstrap prior to the crash, but beca use the X2 was now recognized I could push the .sbf using DSPlite. Then, once the nano was open I just factory defaulted, because my service wasn't recognized by my carrier.... And they all modded happily ever after. I do have a question though: what do you think about trying the root again and instead of manually removing the fluff programming I get a manger to take care of it? This thing is factory pure right now. Btw, I'd like to call attention to where this is being posted from. That is called success...thanks again.

There is a list in this forum from a long while ago that has what's safe to remove and what isn't.
But the easiest thing u could do is to flash either eclipse, molten, liberty , or cm7
They will pretty much get rid of ALL the bloat that is safe to remove and cm7 will even remove ALL the blur skin along with bloat and give you an AOSP experience with your device
signature: 404 error
I'm going to try it....now!
Its pretty hard to brick these devices with the SBF file Motorola supplies. And just a suggestion for future reference, DO NOT use ROM manager with this phone. ROM manager is more for phones with an unlocked bootloader which this phone doesnt have. Some things will work but some things will mess up your phone.

Enjoy
But make a nandroid first!
That way if u wanna go back u don't need to flash sbf u can just restore ur nandroid and be on ur way lol

Ok, just to check my rationale: I'm going to create a Nandroid, to the SD, but I should download CM7 to my PC and install it that way so as not to lag or cause any complications with the X2. Correct?

I have used the search and I have read a lot. You know how things get buried. I figured if there was a way it would be stickied. Then you get link after link after link, go here go there, dead links. I figured I would just ask and save me hours of my life looking more.
If 2.3.5 u are locked and cant unlock ur bootloader till now no one had found a way to do that but u can root and install boodstrap a kind of recovery to locked phones and u can flash some roms that are available for locked bootloader as hybrid rom it is really good

Thank you for a decent reply. Currently I am rooted with Photon Torpedo, bootstrap MOTODX2, with MOF 2.3.5 slim DeBlure. It runs very nice and everything works great. I just play with my phone alot, and seems you have to boot to go into boostrap recovery. Then plug into ac charger and run recovery. I am unable to just go straight in recovery from reboot. Or by holding low volume/power doing boot menu. Which means if something breaks, I have to SBF and go thru the whole shabang again. Unless you know another way.
Thank you again
U are right but when i was using bootstrap i noticed something if ur phone battery completely empty and the phone turns offf completely if u connect it to wall charger and open the phone it will goes directly to boot strap recovery try this and tell me

if you mess up the system you can restore using this method
http://www.motosunfire.com/system/ seems to work just fine for others who have tested it. you can then restore your system back to normal using bootstrap, assuming you make a backup.

Now this is really useful. It sounds like this would fix pretty much anything that you could have messed up using bootstrap. Adding to my toolbox for my all my friends that updated to 2.3.5

I just tried that method and I got a Failed to boot 4 Starting RSD mode message. I did it exactly the way the instructions were described. Can't even get into android recovery or anything now.

pretty odd. it has worked for a few others who messed up the system. that's all it's really intended for. that's why i listed the link that the person above posted in the instructions. mine is for "soft bricks" or messed up systems. as for "hard bricks" it won't do anything because you've messed up more than the system. that's when you have no option but to flash the only 2.3.5 SBF available, which isn't even for the photon but the electrify.

Yeah I used that method after doing a little research on the failed to boot 4 error. That method worked great and went fairly quickly. Still can't use Webtop for some reason. Is there a way to reinstall Webtop? I bought my phone used haven't been able to use it since I've owned it. I looked around and I can't find any info on how to do it.
I think u can find about webtop in tegra2 ubun webtop in dev section

Webtop is installed unless you deleted it. I had trouble with it once after a soft brick. Had to factory reset to get it to work again ):
If you don't have a media dock but you do have an HDMI cable you'll need to modify some system apps to make it work. I have info on MotoSunfire.com in the mods section.
I think it's in the development section of this forum too?

Is this the thread? If so then it says I need my phone to be unlocked to use UbunTop. Unfortunately I got this phone locked on 2.3.5 and I am really confident that it was the OTA update that the previous owner used.

I've factory reset countless times and the result is always the same. I don't have a media dock but I do have a lapdock. I started a thread close to a month ago asking for help but wasn't able to figure anything out. I appreciate the help and suggestions that were given but still wasn't able to solve this.
BTW, sorry to the OP. Didn't mean to threadjack.

So, Sprint says they unlocked my boot loader. Nothing seems changed... Still all the same versions 2.3.5. They had me wipe my phone so if it didn't actually do anything, well, they are dicks lol.
