I tried searching for a how-to on this but apparently I'm searching inclined.
From what I can gather is it as simple as just dumping the zip onto the root of your SD card and doing:
3. Make sure phone is off then hold Power button and Call Button.
4. The menu opens quickly press the power key over the hboot option.
5. Follow onscreen instructions to install the update. the phone will reboot a few times.
you dont even need to search. go to the development section and then look at the top few, it will have very detailed instructions.
I guess I should have elaborated more and said I don't have my phone rooted and really don't want to go that route. I was just getting confused because everything i was finding on here was people running root but I came across a few things where people said the 2.1OTA Leak was just a straight upgrade, so that is my confusion.
Are you asking how to install the 2.1ota leak? Just flash it onto your phone?
Curious, why do you not want to root your phone?
Root is much more flexible, and there are roms that are based off that leak. If you're worried about your warranty, it's going to void it either way, lol.

yeah that is my question, can 2.1OTA just be flashed or does your phone need to be rooted?
I just feel like with root I'll be more likely to kill the phone but I'm going to check into it more again.
If you flash the 2.1 OTA leak onto your phone you CANNOT root your phone. It hasn't been figured out yet.
Root really isn't that hard to do. There are several threads over in the development forum.

yeah I was just reading the thread on going from stock 1.5 to rooted 2.1. Can you give me some of the major benefits of rooting? I'm trying to find really practical stuff, not just the "Well it's cool cause it's like being root in Linux".
And just to clarify you can just flash to 2.1OTA? I'm skeptical of doing that now because I was reading some people think 2.1OTA has a time sensitive date on it.
Future developments will likely be easier to impliment if you root. The ability to run different (and potentially more stable) ROMs. Support for future software not designed for the Eris. Post rooting you can also make Nandroid backups and as long as you don't somehow screw your bootloader you can actually fix your phone.
Also, and this is pure speculation, should Verison decide to discontinue support for the Eris entirely, non-rooters may have issue getting new Android versions since they're limited to signed code.
EDIT: there is also little reason NOT to root. It does everything that you can do unrooted and more. All this plus the fact that you may never be able to root again but could always unroot at your leisure.

Can you point me to a good nandroid tutorial? tried searching for one but if you know of a good one I'd appreciate it.
I was trying to find a nandroid guide when I did it the first time, but once I discovered that Amon_RA's recovery has it built-in, I decided to wing it and see what happened. It was a lot easier than I expected to be honest.
Reboot your phone into recovery (VOL UP + Power), you should have a short list of options, one of which should be Backup/Restore. Trackball into it and select to make a backup. Let it do it's thing, should take a few minutes. Congratulations, you've made a backup of your phone. You can make as many as you like, they're given names based on the date and time they're created, but you can rename without harm (barring a few characters keep it A-Z a-z 0-9 and you should be good)
Restoring to that backup is as easy as entering the same menu but picking restore instead. You need to have made a backup first in order to restore something.
NOTE: I've written all this by memory, and while it should be fairly accurate, I can't turn my phone off currently to double check that the wording is all correct.

If you followed Ivan's guide to the very end, you already flashed Amon_RA's recovery to your phone. To enter it, shutdown your phone and then hold volume up and the call end button (power), you should boot into the recovery.

I´m new here at xda-developers and I have a lot of questions about the atrix and android.
I just bought the atrix and this is my first android smartphone. I´ve SIM unlocked it and rooted it using SuperOneClick.
I´ve read the Q & A thread and it was quite enlightening.
But I still have many questions regarding both the atrix and android:
1. A few days ago, my atrix downloaded the new Motorola atrix updates. If I install this update, will I lose my root permission? Is this update the so called OTA? The update number is 4.1.57.
2. Could you guys give me some tips about how to save more battery life etc?
3. Some apps keep popping even after I killed them with the task killer. Some of them are useless for me. Is there any way to block them? And what about Motorola bloatware? I hate that blur stuff…
4. What does these abbreviations mean? OTA, SBF, ATT, CWM.
5. I want to install gingerBlur on my device, but on those tutorials there is always a mentioning about a OTA 1.8.7 that I gotta backup. Where do I find it?

1. Yes..you will lose root if you upgrade. You can still however attain root afterwards using some of the methods found in the Development forum. I'm surprised SuperOneClick worked for you tbh..
As for your other questions..OTA means Over The Air (regarding updates etc)..SBF is a term regarding system files (something lime that ) ATT means At&t (the carrier)..CWM is Clockwork Mod which is a recovery tool.
Gingerblur would consume less memory..as it has removed alot of the factory bloat that would've come with the device. This would probably most definately help with any "lag" you might be experiencing.

For games..most of it is personal preference. There is a new Pinball HD specifically designed for the Tegra 2 chip..as well as a new jetski game that looks pretty sick. Pocketlegends is also a cool game if you like MMO style games (think World of Warcraft).

About the battery life I already did some google search before, but always the same thing. I thought that I could find anything different here
I rooted my device with SuperOneClick it worked pretty well. Is it an old tool to root the atrix? Is there a new one? In the superOneClick, it can use psneuter and Gingerbreak....well...it worked for me
So OTA is those updates that keep popping for me I want to install gingerBlur, so i gotta update to 1.5.7 and then 1.8.(something) or I can install it right away?
If I want to reset my settings to default factory, will I need that OTA??

1) Thats one of the OTA updates, but not the most recent. You will loose your root with any OTA update, but so far you can always get it back using Gingerbreak.
2)Turn off bluetooth, wifi, data, gps, etc. if your not using them. I have everything but wifi turned off at all times unless I"m using one of them and I have between 40-60% at the end of the day. Also, either have your brightness turned down or use auto brightness. Manually setting it high will drain the battery faster when the screen is on.
3)Dont use task killers. Android does not work like Windows, and those applications are not slowing anything down or eating your battery. By killing them your interfering with Android's internal memory management. Unfortunately the motoblur stuff cant be fully disabled, but parts of it can be hidden with the existing psudoroms like Gingerblur.
4)OTA, SBF, ATT, CWM. - OTA is Over The Air (update). Any official motorola update that gets pushed is an OTA. SBF - not sure what it stands for, but its the file format for Motorola's updates. Usually you can download one on a computer and flash it over USB if you arent getting it over the air, and they can be used as a last resort if you brick your phone. ATT - AT&T, the carrier for the Atrix in the United States. Some roms and tweeks are only compatible with AT&T model phones. CWM - ClockworkMod, software that allows for the installation of roms. CWM is device specific, so only use an Atrix CWM on the Atrix.

what should I do if something goes wrong when I install gingerBlur? I´ve read that I gotta flash sbf 1.8.3. Does it mean that I gotta install the update 1.8.3 to make the atrix stock default?

I'm not trying to sound ignorant, but if all of this it's so confusing I would highly recommend not messing with it unless you're confident you can fix things if they go wrong. Which at this state you are not.
With that said... An SBF is not an update file as mentioned, it is a full system restore image. Not sure what it stands for... Maybe System Backup File???
If something goes wrong you can use an sbf to restore the phone to the factory default of the sbf version number.
Before installing gingerblur you want to be sure you are on the latest version of atrix software, then run gingerbreak to root. Then install CWM to get custom recovery and flash gingerblur from your sd card in CWM. all of this is explained in the development section.

I didn´t install the gingerblur yet as I´m trying to learn what I should do in case something goes wrong
That's where you would check the thread in the dev section about flashing an sbf file to restore back to factory default. You will have to make sure an sbf is available for your phone though. So like I'm with at&t so I can only flash the sbf for the at&t atrix otherwise I will lose functionality of my phone. Or possibly brick it, im not sure

My atrix is from AT&T so I guess the sbf commonly available is from AT&T. I will make sure that the sbf I will use is definitely the one from AT&T.

Reading through this thread, if you can't follow all the instructions fed to you on a silver spoon, and can't/won't/don't read all the appropriate information in the many threads which tell you how to do everything you are trying/want to do, then you either need to keep your phone stock, or go trade it for an iPhone!

Mp3s as SMS tones I'm not sure. I think you can with an SMS replacement app like chomp. I've really never tried as I've had no need to since my phone is on silent 95% of the day because of work.
Individual mp3s for contacts you just have to edit your contact and choose ' more details' and it's towards the bottom. You can use ringdroid to make custom cuts or just put the file in the ringtones folder under 'sdcard' not 'sdcard-ext'.

I don't mind helping, I'm not really much help anywhere else on this forum as I still just have basic knowledge about this stuff.
I bricked one Atrix already a few weeks ago, and have since gotten another...(don't wanna think about it)..
I had toyed with unlocking it, and 'rooted' using the gingerbreak method. I was then, bored, one day and installed CWM paid version(Since I had it on my Nexus One, and it popped up under 'my apps'). Out of curiosity I installed the bootloader via CWM, thinking it would fail before it broke anything..wrong.. It froze after a reboot, but after taking the battery out and back in came back up. Didn't think any more about it, and figured i'd finish the unlocking/flashing part some other time..
Meanwhile the annoying pending system update kept going off, and I inadvertently clicked download... it downloaded, so I figured might as well install and not worry about roms since with root I was able to use the google adhoc wifi apk, which is what I care about most. The install was stuck in an infinite loop. It would 'fail to load RSD', if you took the battery out it boot to android then reboot automatically for system update over and over. I tried using the RSD lite program at this point to flash back to stock rom, and ended up hard bricked...
So, forgive me for being a complete noob as I never had an issue with my nexus one. I am at 4.1.83, android 2.2.2. and baseband 1.7.15.. Which of the many tutorials and post should I follow? How safe are they? Did I brick because I had a partial 2.3.x install, and flashed back to a pre 2.3 base? I've read many post, but definitely a bit gun shy of bricking another Atrix. The phone keeps bugging me to update, and I keep hitting 'cancel'.
I'd like to unlock the boot loader for custom roms.
I'm also a heavy linux user, majority of tutorials seem to only imply windows with RSD lite? can this not be done with adb, and fastboot via linux?

That references 4.5.91 and unless I missed it, doesn't explicitly state it's backwards compatible with 4.1.83 and 2.2.2. is it?
Should I update first, to be at those levels and just know not to flash to an earlier build(pre 2.3.4/4.5.91)?

Nope, don't update. It's safer to unlock BL while you are still at 4.1.83, you just need to download the correct unlock file from the pudding thread.
Otherwise the unlocking steps are exactly the same.
The easiest steps to unlocking are here:

From there you can flash CWM in one minute.
From there you can flash any rom via CWM in two minutes.
Good luck and don't do anything stupid.
i was originally on at&t 2.3.6 firmware, after rooted it and unlock the bootloader i decided to install the "DarkSide" rom on prefinal version and it worked fine (minor bugs), but my question is that if i decide to install the latest version of alien (which i have heard the version in minor of 2.3.6), could cause me any kind of brick???
i am really new on all of this and i don't want to screw anything

If you've unlocked the bootloader, it shouldn't have a problem. I say shouldn't because there's always a small chance that something can happen. But to be honest, bricks usually happen when users don't follow instructions or read warnings, at least in my experience.
First rule of thumb when end user hacking or softmodding any device, be it a game system or phone, always read instructions all the way through before and during the process. This will minimize the chance of bricking.
If you're not comfortable with taking the risk, then maybe you shouldn't have unlocked the bootloader. I just hope that you realize your phone's warranty is shot, and there's no going back.
Sorry, I'm not trying to sound rude. I just want you to realize that if it bricks, you're responsible, and nobody else is. But it shouldn't brick if you follow directions carefully, and make sure you're installing the correct version, be it Bell or AT&T. Also make sure, in general for any rom, that you don't install a version with high-performance mods, like overclocking to 1.45ghz. This is not to be done lightly, as it can lead to burning up your phone, if not taken care of properly. Again, read warnings.
It is recommended to perform a backup of apps, contacts, SMS or whatever before doing anything. This can help when testing a new rom, as there may be something you end up not liking about the rom, and redoing the whole setup process can get tiring. I recommend TiBu (Titanium Backup) for apps and Super Backup for SMS, contacts, and Call logs. These are available in the market, and they work across different roms. TiBu Pro costs about $5 though, but it's the second best $5 spent on the market, next to PowerAmp. ( ) It will be invaluable to you. The free version does not support batch restore (and backup I think, batch means multiples at a time)

i know that it says that is for atrix at&t 2.3.4 but it worked for my virgin atrix 2.3.6 at&t, i recomend to watch the video 3-5 times before trying, just follow step by step very carefully and when in your phone says that:
"Failed to boot, error 0x1000"
"No OS found"
i just restarted the same program but in option 3, it will automatically follow the next step
Remember, this is not a guide of any kind, just sharing my personal experience, this is what i used

i have been seeing a lot of threads about rooting this phone, but, they all have windows scripts, even the thread that is said to have a runme.sh does not have it in any of the links that i unzipped - only a runme.bat, but yet, people keep mentioning a runme.sh in it... also, i really don't see any one lying out the steps for doing this with linux.
i'm a noob, and dont really know much about this stuff, but i've done this ONCE before with a galxy exhibit, but it was very easy, i just copied a file to the phone (stock rom?), rebooted into recovery, told it to recover from that file, and i was done.
i have no idea how to do it with my new phone, and so i'm wondering:
1: where can i find the files i need to do this with linux - i just want root, nothing special
2: where can i find the steps necessary to do it - in the easiest manner possible?
3: it says i have droid 4.0.4, ICS, but every one who talks about lg l9 p769 says its JB, so, thats a bit odd...

Your phone is running ICS 4.0, that is the version which it shipped with. Pretty much everyone on here has upgraded to JB either with software update on the phone or they have manually updated with the offline KDZ flash method.
I dont have any experience in linux so I cant help. I hope you can get your phone rooted!

i just started to restart my phone into recovery mode to see if i could put cyenogenmod on it without having to root it first, and it's saying "software upgrade ... please wait while upgrading...", so, i guess it's upgrading to JB right now... i'll see shortly.

well, i tried that "LGpwn" and it didn't work, as well as a fake lg-recovery app. i figured out that i've got a "10g" phone (P769 V10G ICS). i'm not sure what the next step is. some one mentioned downgrading to JB... is there some where you can point me to for that???
i've GOT to get this t-mobile junk off my damned phone... i've even TRIED to install cyenogenmod, but i can't figure out how to get my phone to go into recovery mode (NOT factory rest) - i've tried volup+power+home and volup+power, and neither seem to be working.
Setup a sandbox, windows xp. LG uses windows, no other way to root as of right now for the t-mobile version.

yeah, it's starting to look like i'm gonna have to try this with a virtual machine, or, pay some one else to do it, or, go get my money back and downgrade to a samsung galaxy exihibit (not sure if the new model of that phone is just as easy as the exhibit 4g, but, it's screen is about an inch smaller than the lg, and they're all 3 the same price, so i'd rather keep the lg).

Option #1
If you are rooted on stock T-Mobile 10e or 10g ROM and have the CWM installed from this thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2095825 follow my instructions.
Place one of these CWM ROM images on your SD-Card:

Place this JB radio firmware from T-Mobile 20d ROM on your SD-Card:

Power off the device.
After power on the back/menu capacitive buttons will flash repetedly. Press Volume down while the lights are flashing and the phone should go into recovery.
Flash the ROM first.
Flash the radio second.
Reboot.
***Notes***
1.) 20d is the latest T-Mobile, 21b is the latest Wind Mobile. Both work.
2.) 21b is lighter/faster but has no wifi-calling.
3.) 21b will require you to manually enter your APN settings for cellular data and MMS. Be sure to write down your APN settings before flashing this ROM.
4.) Some users say battery life sucks on JB. I notice that 21b is better on battery life than 20d.

Use KVM with a GUI or even easier use VirtualBox.
I'm a die hard linux geek too. I even run linux at work while all of our msp software was written for windows. You are better off just running an old copy of xp inside virtualbox trust me its just easier that way. You can use adb if you like (its the same thing the windows users use in their batch files and just rewrite the bash script, but you will save yourself lots of headaches just using virtualbox. -- my .02

i'm not exactly sure what the end result of your instructions are, as i assumed it was to BE rooted, but the first line of your post says "if you are rooted ...", so, i'm guessing you're telling us how to ... unlock the boot loader?
by the way, that reminds me, i still haven't come across any posts on this site that tell noobs:

If you are on 10e ROM you can root in Linux:

It will require rewriting the batch script as a Linux shell script. It is possible but nobody has done it yet.

It allows you to boot an un-signed kernel. You can boot custom ROMs basically.

Root allows you to `su -` to the root user and own the whole system.

yeah, the one t-mobile is selling now is a v10g - so, it's time to play with virtual machine, and hope that usb-access is passed through from ubuntu to the VM.

I know that a long time ago when I ran VirtualBox in Ubuntu there was something I had to do to allow USB access to the VM.

hey, i've got 1 more quick question: is there a way to simply load a pre-rooted ROM onto it, like i did with my samsung? where you put it onto the device, the go into recovery mode and choose the pre-rooted ROM? i haven't seen any mention of that, so i'm not sure if that's an option...
also, how the hell do you make this boot into recovery mode? i still haven't been able to get it to do that?

Yes you can flash a pre-rooted image. They are available. Use the search?
I posted instructions on the first page showing how to boot recovery.
that's great news - that's all i really needed - i didn't see them before, at least, not conspicuously, but i'll search around again.

those steps assume i have CWM installed, and i don't. i looked at installing CWM, and it doesn't have an official recovery app for the p769, and when i went to look at that thread you linked to, it says you must be rooted already. this is the aggravating part of us ignorant people dealing with people who know many things: it appears to us that you have to do some thing that requires that it is already done before you can do it. it doesn't make any sense - just a bunch of circualar requirements, with no beginning.
so, let me ask this a different way: how do i reboot into recovery mode, on a STOCK LG P769 v10g? the lights do not flash, and i'm assuming that is a CWM feature - but CWM is not installed - this is COMPLETELY STOCK - fresh out of the box. so, what do you press, when turning it on, to make it go into recovery mode, so that you can recover from a pre-rooted rom (which i am still looking for)?

well, borrowed a windows computer and i got it rooted, but, i found out a few things about this exact model: it has no "boot to recovery" option, by default - it's locked down pretty good. you can not use any of the other root methods on this model, and you can not do it from linux (f*ck me).
so, that long-winded fake-software-update-while-switched-out-a-hex-edited-binary-file is the ONLY way for this exact model, it seems...
but, at least i can confirm that this exact model CAN be rooted at all
now to remove alllllllll the bloatware... and look into this CWM more and learn more about what is actually IS and WHY so many people install/use/flash it...
hey, does any one know if cyenogenmod ever got themselve's an "app/marketplace"??? that was one of the draw-backs to installing it, last i checked.

I've decided to help you out This page will give you some more info on the P769 and several kdz (roms) for the P769
The fastest way to root is to flash the V21B kdz (this is the Jelly Bean version for Canada) using this guide, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36351786
The reason why you want this rom is because it has a vulnerability that is easy to exploit with Jcase apk
Once your followed everything (and rooted), install Super Su and Busybox
Next install artas182x second init CWM (in case you can't find it on his page, the link is here )
Note: you will see blinking led lights when you see the LG logo (booting up) appear after a couple of seconds. To enter the CWM press the vol (-) when the lights start flashing.
After you installed Artas182x CWM you can recover from someones clockworkmod backup.

Note: only restore CWM backups from P769 versions or MS769!!!!
Or check out the V10B (MetroPCS "JellyBean") CWM backup
Now the only 2 reasons to unlock the bootloader are:
1. Install a safer and better CWM
The reason why is because Artas182x CWM is a second init (bootstrap), so if you mess around with a busybox apk and something goes wrong or you remove a file that is required (for CWM), it will stop operating. You will have to reflash the kdz or fix what you changed to get it working again.) I've had this problem several times while messing around with different busybox apps and etc.
2. Custom roms
(which you stated you are not looking for) not worth talking about right now.
Answer to questions
The only pre rooted roms are clockworkmod backups, lol
The default recovery is useless to us (unless you feel like solving the problem)
Flashing back and forth (ice to jelly) comes with risk, the program used on Windows to flash is buggy at times. The best way (in my opinion) is to flash only when really required and mostly restore from clockwormod backups. The device is actually hard to hard brick, but it will require at lot more knowledge to get your device running again.

i'm still on ICS for the moment. still trying to understand what i need to do next. re-reading your post for the 2nd time, and all the threads it references. making sure i don't screw any thing up. thinking about upgrading to JB, and trying this CWM. and looking into this "cyanogenmod" some more, to understand why i never see any one on this site mention it, and what all these "other roms" are about. lmao, like i said, i'm way new to this . it's a lot to take in, even for a web developer .
