You need to unroot otherwise it will say that it is "unofficial firmware" and will not let you upgrade. Remove JIT and go to flashtool thread and flash global generic.

damn it... why wont you read?

So you can update with your own country's firmware and not the Nordic One.
It was to test the flashed mostly. I obviously have gone back to 2.1 again :-D

Working Root on 2.3.3 locked bootloaders! :) (Works on all Xperia Plays except R800X)

Ive seen this on the arc section and it works !
Do not try this if you have an unlocked bootloader or if you dont know what your doing! I'm not resposible if you break or brick your phone!
If you're already on a rooted .184/.181 firmware and OTA update is available for you just update your firmware. If not:
- Backup the apps you need (if you have root)
- flash to .184 UK firmware with the flashtool (Do a clean install or else you will have alot of force closes)
- heres the .184 UK firmware and the flash tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746
- Use Gingerbreak http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765 or Superoneclick to root your device
- Update your Play using a OTA(over the air) update(Got to settings->About phone->Software update)
- Restore your apps
- Enjoy your rooted 2.3.3!!!
NOTE !!! : The only thing you should do after you flash and before ota update is to root and nuthin more.
NOTE 2: The Generic UK firmware works worldwide. Doesn't matter what phone you have except for the Verizon model. So if you have an AT&T R800a dev/google conference unit or UK or Rogers or France or any other phone. It will work It will not brick your phone

If you're allready on a rooted .181 and OTA update is available for you just update your firmware. If not:
- flash to a 3.0.A.2.181 firmware with the flashtool
- Use Gingerbreak or Superoneclick to root your device
- Update your Arc/Play using a OTA(over the air) update(Got to settings->About phone->Software update)
- Enjoy your rooted 2.3.3!!!
Note this only works on .181 firmwares

I have my play rooted only.
Hi guys,
So far this methode only works with the .181 global generic firmware(1247-1061) on the Arc.
I think if you flash the global generic .181 firmware for the play this methode should also work for you guys.
good luck!

Whoa wait a minute!, it didn't work at all when I tried it AFTER I had uninstalled all the apps on the safe list, and plus it was also said to have just been working on .181 so I take what I previously said back and I'm pretty sure I confirmed it working also BEFORE you put this up

remember there is lots to search thru BEFORE you go and make sensationalist claims like "giving wrong information" out just a thought tuff guy!!
I can confirm that this is not working for me. I've flashed the UK generic 1.84 a while back. I've removed some bloatware after rooting with gingerbreak.
Today I read this thread and gave it a try. It downloads the update and when I click ok it shuts off and does it's thing with the four dots. When it reboots it goes through the Sony txt and bootup anim and then the lock screen and says it's unable to update?
I've tried it twice. My phone is sim unlocked from purchase. Could it be the removed bloatware or a modified framework that causes it?
Regards Dousan...
e: I did it OTA.
help......
i have a strange problem i was on 2.3.3 unrooted
i tried to downgrade to the uk generic firmware in this post with
flashtool, it flashed ok i restarted phone but
when phone goes to desktop its blank just the darkblue wallpaper with nothing on it
kust the time in the top right taskbar and the signal strenth and the simcard symbol with a red x on it and the battery status bar
and that it.
it wont scroll left/right for more home screens, none of the buttons do anything
apart from power button and volume up/down
when i scroll the notification bar down it just says emergency calls only
and then in the top left its got the numbers 1980 3 8
what the hell is goin on
my fone boots up but i cant use it in any way
Is the OTA update available everywhere? Mines on 2.3.2 but if i try to OTA it says im already on the latest firmware.

[Q] Will I get the 2.3 update?

I have an xperia x10a bought from bestbuy (att) and i have succesfully updated my phone to the Generic 2.1.1 on baseband 2.1.54 with build number 2.1.A.0.435. I am also rooted. My question is will i get the 2.3 update right away, because I am on a Generic firmware, or will i have to wait for some kind of an ftf or something?
I read around here that rooted phones are a no go, so you may want to unroot just to be safe
Yeah just in case something happens, unroot your phone. Apparently SEUS nor PC Companion will update your phone unless it's unrooted.
ok i unrooted my phone but the question was more about whether i will get the 2.3 update at the same time as everyone else because i have an att phone with generic firmware

You will get the update. At the same time as everyone else...probably not. However the good news is is once it is officially released someone here will get it and the devs will be able to create a .ftf file for everyone to have it using flashtool. So once it is officially released the devs will have it ready for us in no time...you wont have to wait for SE anymore.

Maybe pre-rooted as well?
Because I remembered when 1 of the 2.1.1 updates came and we can't root it when it rolled out, so devs made a pre-rooted ftf file.

Maybe...i dont know. But like i said in another thread i dont imagine SE making this difficult to root since afterall they are unlocking there bootloaders on the newer phones....we'll see.

When I try to update my phone, it says it already has the most recent software

Hello, I tryed to update my phone today from 2.1 to 2.3, but it didn't work. I'm from Holland and the update should be available to people from Holland, I tried contacting my provider (T-Mobile), they said they rolled out the update already for branded phones. So what do i need to do now to update my phone to 2.3? Sorry for my crappy English.

You should flash it with this following link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746
Bro it probably means update is not out for it region.if u bought this phone in a contract with it service provider then u ll have to wait till they pass this upgrade. Alternatively u can get 2.3 if u root ur phone n update with flash tool to global generic firmware or a custom Rom and then update it will let u get 2.3.. Search how to root first then go to wolfbreak Rom n get 2.3...just search

@Stanzzzz,
I've been to my provider, it's out already for my region and they passed the upgrade.
I'll try that..
@benoitbroza,
What do i have to do after that?
I just flashed it to 2.3, the phone become really slow.. any firm/mod out wich i could use wich is faster then the one from the flash topic?

I can give you Gingerbread today and you can update yourself from that with PCC or SEUS or ICS on Sunday.
Yes please. Thanks for your help
Only managed to get Gingerbread for now, sorry, but SEUS or PCC will update you straight to ICS anyway.

If you use it could you let me know if it updates you to 6.1.1.B.1.10 or 6.1.1.B.1.54.
Thanks.
Thanks for your reply.
I tried this on Saturday and it works a treat.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2008667&highlight=xperia+uk+firmware
I used the flash tool, then used pc companion to repair the phone and then did a hard reset on the phone. Everything working great. Camera is a bit laggy though.
Goes to 6.1.1.B.1.10 only.
Is there a generic UK firmware that upgrades to 6.1.1.B.1.54 ?

Use the nordic generic firmware. Fast, less junk and works great in the UK. I use it on EE without issues.

But just noticing... If you wanted .54 firmwire, why did you downgrade to GB than updated to b.10 in first place?
