[ROOT] Instructions for obtaining root access! - Motorola Photon 4G

Here is the method I discovered for root access. Yes, it requires the HD Station. There is currently no way around that. You have to download and extract pulse.tar in webtop. There is no other way I know of that will work. You can use adb or Android Terminal Emulator instead of ssh, but you are on your own. With those, expect problems with your PATH.
I have surprise for another day now.
Please donate with the "Donate to me" button on the top left of this post, if you are willing. I don't promise anything new in the future. It would just be a thank you for this hack.
Here is a very nicely done pdf with screenshots, done by twospirits.

This is some great work Edgan.
Might see a spike in Dock sales, unknown is working on webtop over hdmi right now so if someone can just "borrow" a dock to root they will still be able to use webtop with out it.

Way to go! Can't wait to try it out! Thanks guys!

Hmmm should be able to just do this all by ConnectBot as well, eh?
Unrooting should be as simple as deleting /system/bin/su and uninstalling Superuser, right?
For people that have seen the webtop in action before, is it activated immediately upon plugging it in or do you need to plug in the HDMI as well? Why are the keyboard and mouse necessary, are there no on-screen equivalents on webtop?

Awesome job here gentleman cant wait to get this thing rooted

Is this a permanent root or a temporary one that we'll need to reapply each time we reboot? Great job regardless!

Permanent, though as soon as an update comes out, we will have to figure out if it breaks OTA. Once they fix the exploit, it gets even harder.

edgan,
Nice work, enjoyed watching you guys work last night on IRC.
So has anybody installed apps like Titanium Backup that require root?
If so off to get me a dock.

My will power is getting weaker and weaker.. Im trying to hold out for the SGS2 but these threads make it tough.

My question is, does anyone have a custom recovery installed on it? If you can root the system and put a custom recovery on it, then you're good to go.

Not with a locked bootloader, unfortunately.

This is great!
Now I have a reason to get the HD station. I was waiting for them to to start selling the webtop!!

Wait. Are you saying Photon wont see a CWM recovery due to locked bootloader?

You need s-off to flash a recovery afaik, so until the bootloader gets unlocked, we're S.O.L.
Has anyone tried to uninstall bloatware and to run a wireless tether solution yet ? Can't wait to receive my photon tomorrow...

I seriouly doubt it truly uninstalls the apps... Without root, you're just hiding them. Check Applications in Settings, they're still there.

Got to say I got the web dock and real like the web dock....just leave the doc on my hdtv and with the phone on it my TV is now INTERNET enabled .....posted from my tv/webdock/phone

I don't see why not. If for some reason you couldn't put CWM on it, it would be the first out of all of the other Moto's with encrypted bootloaders

Free HotSpot??
Is there a free hot spot app that works with the Photon after this root has been applied??

Perma-Temp Root + HULU FIX

ANNOUNCING PERMA-TEMP ROOT + HULU FIX!!!!
I've taken the excellent existing information from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1159354 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=688054&page=46
See the first link for instructions, etc. Basically just plug your phone into your PC, make sure USB debugging is on, using your phone as charge only, and that HTC Sync isn't running. Then open up the attached zip and run Run_ME_Fr3vo_ROOT + HULU FIX. OH, and I'm not sure if it matters, but have the latest Adobe Flash player installed on your phone before you start (10.3.185.25)
That's it! Your phone should be rooted AND HULU-ready until you reboot.
WHAT I DID: All I did was add a few commands that will delete your lib file from com.adobe.flashplayer, then install a different .lib file with correct permissions. Now, when you go browse Hulu with your stock browser or Dolphin (making sure your settings are set to disable mobile browsing, or set as DESKTOP VIEW, etc), Hulu won't recognize your phone as non-desktop, and you'll be free to watch Hulu all you want!
[Please note: this is my first time doing anything like this, as in first time ever creating a .bat file or doing anything with adb beyond the very basics; please bear that in mind when ripping me apart for being a noob ]
If this was helpful, please let me know with a thanks!
EDIT: Thanks to abe_ahmed09 for reminding me this works with stock browser too!
Unable to test this right now due to no PC access. But dude, no one should rip you apart, you are trying to help the community and I commend you do doing things that a lot of others do not have the ability to do.

Thanks man that's nice of you to say! I really enjoy XDA because (if I'm diligent) I can learn little by little, ask a few questions here and there, and look back and realize I've made a decent amount of progress!

very nice work! thanks for this.
SWEET!
Glad it's working! I'll add emphasis to the fact that you need the latest version of flash for it to work.
Here's a question: are there any other programs out there that have to be tweaked AFTER root in order to work? What I mean is, right now I've got 10 or 20 root apps that work flawlessly after I root. But if there are good apps out there that require additional tweaking after root, perhaps we could incorporate that into the .bat as well

Worst-case scenario, reboot phone and then run it! Either way, because of the nature of temp-root, it's all pretty "SAFE" at this point

Oh hell no! Just use the free Dolphin Browser from the market, then go to settings and choose "Desktop" so that websites think you're browsing from a PC/Mac. When you get to HULU, depending on your settings, you may need to click the green arrow to watch the video.
Works in Full Screen too!!
...of course, if you're talking about Hulu-plus-only videos---then yes, you'd of course need Plus to view those videos just as you would elsewhere.
EDIT: Reading over your comment again I guess I need to clarify further: nothing here is "ad supported" because there are no apps, etc that I've provided. ALL MY HULU FIX DOES IS SWAP OUT A FILE IN YOUR ADOBE APP FOLDER THAT TRICKS HULU INTO THINKING YOU'RE A COMPUTER. But note that you'll still need a BROWSER that enables you to browse like a computer.
Were these points unclear to anyone else?
Works after updating flash to 10.3.

Awesome, Great to hear it! Ya, not sure why the root method in my OP isn't working for you...different people have posted different results with the same root method! Anyway glad it's working, and as you discovered, there should be no problem running this on a rooted phone
Now I've tweaked it further so it'll overclock your phone to 1.8 GHz! I might make a new thread for that...

Wireless Tether for Root Users not available on GS2, any way around this?

Would downloading the .apk from an outside source provide the same results? Also, would AT&T be onto this?
I sideloaded the app because I like the Bluetooth pan tethering capability... Was able to set up a working ad-hoc network but not able to get Bluetooth tethering working.
I prefer the phone's built in wireless tethering as it's a true access point
Just delete tetheringmanager2.apk from /system/app to use the phone's built in tethering.

+1 or if you dont want to delete the file just rename it to tetheringmanager2.ap
On cm7 wireless tethering works perfectly. I hadn't ever tried it until it recently got enabled. I tethered my captivate to it that didn't have a similar card in it just to test it out. I got really good download and upload speeds on the Cappy wifi tethered too.

Alright ill try removing that file, would freezing it give the same results?
Also, I dont wanna get caught by AT&T, ive heard about people getting letters, etc.
Built-in wi-fi hotspot is better becuse it is a true wi-fi AP. Wireless Tether app only gives you adhoc network that a lot of devices, like Android tablet, are not compatible with.
You get caught regardless what app you use. AT&T judge you by the amount of data you use and what's in those data. They could care less what tethering app you use.

Freezing it with TiBU is similar to removing in that it will not run, but it is still there incase you need it for something later on.

I don't think you read my whole message. This could not be done as it was claiming "READ ONLY" file system.
I also tried this with Root Explorer with the same results, it can not do it. I assume I need to do this from CWM or something else. If someone can help point me in the right direction as to how to do this, that would be awesome.

[Q] How to unroot TP or fool TWC App to think it's unrooted?

Hey everybody, I think that this question is going to pop up more often since yesterday (April 17) Time Warner Cable released updated version of their app that now allows you to stream live tv on your ICS device.
The problem is that they implemented a mechanism that checks if your tablet/phone was rooted, if it was they show you message that the app is not supported on rooted devices.
Is there a way to work around this? I would not mind unrooting my TP to test this app. How can this be achieved?
Thanks for any tips!

edit: of course I found the answer a minute later after this post, after i searched for an hour. of course. i had to change test-keys to something else

2) Open build.prop (/system/build.prop) with Root Explorer or a similar file explorer app and rename test-keys to dEris-badass (lol)
3) I left USB Debugging enabled (some need to disable this)
4) Log in and watch some TV =]

TWC TV App phone/tab for root users hdmi output

Here is the updated Time Warner Cable app for phones and tablets. To get my fix to work you must uninstall any previous twc app you have then install this one. If it denies you live tv because of root just use es file explorer and enable root and system access in settings of es file explorer. Then navigate to system then apps and rename superuser.apk to su.apk and reboot. The tablet version should bypass root checks. To get hdmi working start viewing live tv on your device (must be on home WiFi network) and when it is playing plug in your hdmi cable... Pic is attached to prove it works. I will attach the tablet version too in the next post. Enjoy guys and gals

new phone

OK right now Im running a droid incredible, I got the daughter an iphone and her 4g lte is just sitting here. I want to use it. My phone is s-off rooted and am currently running cm10.1 . I also use titanium back up with root pro, what if anything can I bring to the new phone using tb(sms/mms or call log, apps, pics etc). Will my sd card that I use now have to be formatted or will it just match right up and run perfectly fine? Next thing is this one isn't activated yet and want to root it and stuff before I do activate in case things go wrong and I know it takes time to do it. If I want to run the cm 10.1 rom again on it does youtube, camera camcorder and all that stuff work and wireless tether also be hidden from verizon lol. What are the links to the s-off and rooting procedures so I can do this easily. I have allot more questions but will ask at a later time.
Thank you

What are the links to the s-off and rooting procedures so I can do this easily. I have allot more questions but will ask at a later time.
Thank you

I use G Cloud Backup to backup most things like SMS, Contacts, pics. (It doesn't do apps, but all the apps are tied to my google account and restore anyway)
As for rooting and S-OFF u can find all the info you need from this index thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2141322
on CM10.1 youtube works, camera works, camcorder works but isn't perfect when it comes to focusing. IDK about wireless tether.
will titanium work from the sd card being the inc and then moved to the 4g lte? I didn't know I could use google cloud for sms and stuff like that
And is S-off better than temp root? and I like the twrp recovery Im using now, I take it it works well with this phone too.

What I understand is titanium will see your backups no matter. S off is of course the best way to go if your comfortable. TWRP works and is officially supported. You could try the new app carbon to back up your data and re sync it to your new device. And it only takes a second to activate the inc4G cause of the sim card
It's not a glitch this isn't Wreck it Ralph

IDK about titanium, maybe someone with more experience will chime in. I'm just trying to help because I've seen you post a few times, and I know if it were me, I'd at least hope for a response lol.
When I say G Cloud Backup, I mean this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.genie9.gcloudbackup&hl=en
I use it to backup SMS, pics, call logs and some other stuff sometimes. Although I'm still not sure how it would work backing up on one device and restoring on another.
Sorry I couldn't be more help. If it were me, I'd probably just backup the most important stuff to dropbox or something and start fresh on a new phone. Like I said, I'm pretty sure the apps will restore once you login to your google account on the new phone. I've started fresh on this phone before and it gives you the option to restore (always on wi-fi of course so I don't eat up data downloading a bunch of apps). Although I don't think it keeps the app data, just re-downloads the apps associated with your google account.
OK I think the s-off is the way I will go. I am installing g cloud now for mms/sms basically if it works it works. twrp is my recovery of choice also. so now I need to find the links and directions to it all. Thank you guys for your responses.
Oh btw does anyone know if the tether (wireless) is still under the eyes like my og incredible is after I rooted it?
How do you guys update this phone rom? right now I using goomanager app and it has ota for my DINC?
I can also use swype typing right?
umm I only have windows vista 32-bit, so I take it can't do the s-off?

The files will disappear when you are done. They will download to and live on a virtual RAM disk. Booting from the Ubuntu Live CD and selecting "try" will not affect your installed OS at all. (unless of course you decide to mount that hard drive and erase/modify files on that drive)
