Signal Strength Fix Coming? - HTC EVO 3D

Does anyone know for sure if the signal strength issue is due to the radio in the phone or an overcrowded network?

well they definitely have an overcrowded network, but having no service in an area that gets 4+ bars with an OG evo definitely isn't right. that as well as garbage data speeds (40-50 kbps down and 5 or less kbps up)

Flash the old (pre release) radio and see what you get. I get the same signal strength on the meter but I get much more solid connection and far better data speeds and haven't had a dropped call since...I've flashed back and forth testing between this radio, stock radio and the newest update radio...the newest having the lowest data speeds and weakest meter and the most roaming...stock being, well bad (but not as bad as the update) and the pre-release radio being, well, actually pretty awesome except for the weak meter...
...after seeing that I have faith that they can, in fact, issue an update to remedy the problem.
edit: by better data speeds I mean WAY better.... stock radio 200-600kbps with moderate signal strength....updated radio 100-250kbps (if that)....pre-release radio 800-1400kbps...and in a full-bars situation today I saw 2500kbps! YMMV, report any results in the radio thread in dev section

signal strength is based on physical distance or interference, like buildings and trees, not amount of people on the network

Or things like wind, bad moods or frustration if we're talking 4G

So how exactly do you do this? I'm about to flush this phone down the toilet and sign up with Verizon. I already dropped my overdrive for a Verizon 4g mifi and the difference in speed is unbelievable. I'll gladly pay more for Verizon if I can get a reliable and fast data connection.
Maybe the radio flash thing works. Tried searching the eve 3d forum but nothing comes up... Any help appreciated to save me some ETFs.

There's a thread in the cdma development that has all the radio's and instructions how to flash, if that's what your looking for.

Yup. This. Evo3D Dev forum, search for the Radio thread and follow the instruction...make sure to use the first radio on the list...before stock...there is no 4G for that revision, only 3G....meter didn't change by my signal stability and speed change drastically. YMMV, but hope it helps you.
Best of luck but screw loyalty...use what works best for you.

I know radios help with battery life, who's getting what battery life?
And does it seem to take forever to chargeor is it just me?

The battery at work is great home no so good on 3g but greaf on wifi, are you using stock charger the came with the phone? I was using a samsung charger since the cable is larger but will take forever, from the day on i use the htc charger and it charges quick unless im using it of course, usually 2 hours or so to full charged from almost dead and 50% + in an hour, it does take a while to charged from 99 to 100 tho
If you don't have an Evo3d well you don't have an Evo3d

Guys, try the 00001 PRL hack before you give up on the phone. I was having the same signal issues until I did the prl hack, I'm getting excellent signal strength. Now it does mean that you're in data-roaming mode all the time but it's worth it to me.......and no change in battery usage.

Yeah, worth it until Sprint kicks you off of their network forever you mean?
Sent from my HTC Evo 3D.

Until we get an update to the radio to improve the 3G signal, I'm keeping with the prl hack.

using Verizon prl can and will get you the boot by Sprint.
Let him find out the hard way. He's well aware of the consequences of excessive roaming. He's been warned.
My advice is to not use the Verizon prl unless you really need to. But switch back to the Sprint prl right away once you're done using data services that actually works (Verizon's). Since it's very easy to change your prl and only requires a reboot to take effect, this is what I do when I'm out in a bad coverage area and need to access the internet when I have little or no Sprint data services. Do yourself a favor and be smart about it and not abuse the prl hack.

Back on topic, I also have poor signal and 3G data since switching to the EVO 3D. It's beyond unacceptable and my original EVO 4G got a much better signal here at my home than this new EVO 3D. Still considering returning my 3D and waiting for either a radio update or a better phone. This is VERY aggravating!

Signal strength, returned phones and the new Massachusetts phone tax law

I'm risking starting up another signal strength thread, but I figured this info was useful for anyone looking to return their Evo 3D or any other phone in Massachusetts.
I finally decided I had better try swapping out my Evo 3D at Best Buy in case there was something wrong with the radio. Reception in Eastern Massachusetts has been horrible with it. Far worse than my Moment or my wife's Epic.
When I tried to swap the phone out, they told me I owed $22 in taxes. Turns out that July 1st, Massachusetts taxes you on the full $699 and not the price you pay. So if you bought on the 24th and replace in store after July 1st, there is nothing Best Buy can do to avoid the tax.
I decided to switch back to the original phone because after loading a signal dbm widget onto both phones and the reps' personal evo 3d, they all had similarly crappy signals.
A few questions though:
1) It doesn't seem like signal is always bad. Just much more prone to dropping out. Anyone else experienced this?
2) Is it possible that the case is killing the signal? I have the platinum series case from best buy which looks slick but if it's killing the signal I'll get rid of it.
3) I noticed that bluetooth seems to have a significant negative effect on the dbm of the phone signal. Is this normal for a phone, bad design, bad luck or chance?
4) I struggle to get 4G to stay connected in Boston. It loses the connection then goes into 4G! mode and refuses to connect for more than a few seconds. Is this normal?
5) To what extent can HTC improve signal performance by software updates? Samsung was able to do this for the Moment, but they were starting with a lemon of a phone to begin with...
Anyway, bad signal or not, if you are messing around with phones in Massachusetts, be sure to sneak over the border to New Hampshire before returning it or you'll piss away $20+.
I'm having signal issues too gets really annoying esp with 4g hope its just a bug that can be fixed
I am in the worcester area and my signal is terrible everywhere I go. With my 4g it was fine, 3d absolutely sucks. I am on my second phone now and both have been horrible. I have been in the city where I used to have great signal but get nothing now. I also had no signal on the mass pike in auburn and was roaming.

I noticed today, after changing the roaming mode from automatic to sprint only, that I was dropping in and out of service every few minutes. This had never happened previously as I always have a consistent signal in this area both with the Evo3D as well as the Evo4G. I am hoping a radio update will fix this...
I'll try it this week when I am in New York City and see if it improves. Maybe it just isn't using all the towers in this area or something.
I had the same exact problem with mine but then i loaded a custom prl (00001) and now it's rock solid signal and i haven't roamed yet. Highly recommend by me.

Of course MA lawmakers passed the revised taxes bill. They had to find a way to hike their pay and they figured some weird tax would fill the void.

My ''xDU4L C0R3 SH00T3Rx'' shot you down in 3D!
I live Cape Cod, and drive all over MA and RI, and my signal and 3G is horrible. I exchanged mine for a new one and no change in service. My old Evo 4G got 120 to 140 kbs and this one gets 22 to 70, occasionally 94... Something is wrong with the phone, not the service... I may just buy another Evo 4G from eBay since I gave mine to my nephew, and keep this phone until they find a fix...

Framingham
I'm in Framingham right now, getting 2 bars on the 4g meter. Speedtest shows 7617 down and 1435 up.
3G sucks for me too. It's not quite 'deal breaker' material, but combined with some other pet peeves of mine I'm leaning towards bringing it back and waiting for the SGS2....cuz if I'm going to have a **** radio I might as well have an unlocked bootloader and CM8 guaranteed.
Well here in Wisconsin I've been getting pretty consistent signals and 3g. But about 2 hours ago everything failed. Haven't had 3g since and I either have 0 bars or I'm roaming, usually with still only a bar or two. Can somebody think of a cause for this because I'm out of ideas.

Need opinions - Evo 3D poor reception

I am coming from an Evo 4G. My apartment has always had sub par reception on sprint but now with the Evo 3D it is becoming irritating. In the same places I had 3G, I now am roaming. In a place where I had 2-3 4G bars, I have barely 1. I have tried updating my prl, my profile. One thing that I will note is that 4G on the 1 reported bar is about as good as the 3 bars on the old Evo. However 3G reception is definitely not very good overall.
My question - as I approach the one month I have had this phone, I wonder if I should:
A. Exchange the phone for another 3D. Has anyone heard of reception issues related to hardware? How has this device compared for everyone to the old Evo as far as reception? Do I have a dud?
B. Return it and get an original Evo.
C. Something else - call sprint ask for airwave or something like that.
I appreciate any advice anyone has. Thanks in advance.
My radio bars do show a tad lower, but I havent really noticed any issues.
I am willing to be some future PRL updates will help this.
My OG Evo was the same around launch time too
Had the same issue vs my old Eris on Verizon. Sprint reset the network which helped some, but I wound up manually changing the PRL to a USCellular one. Gained 4 bars.

so PRL updates meaning non-sprint developer created? so 2 votes in favor of waiting it out?

Have some friends with different carriers test your area, see which is stronger and use their PRL. That's what I did, told that to the Sprint rep while getting my MSL and he liked the idea (I did hint I would leave if I couldn't get a better signal).

Had the exact same issue and well I returned mine this last Sunday and got a new 3d and well it's better so far. Last week Sprint updated prl over the air and it worked for a minute and then it was back to roaming, dropping calls, battery draining like crazy, sensitive power button. I know it's only Monday but I have not dropped one call or went into roaming yet.

Verizon is strongest but if I take that PRL then I wont have Sprint 4G will I?
Also how would you load the other PRL?
Thank you!
I had the power button sensitivity issue - where the button presses momentarily caused the power menu to come up instead of going into sleep mode. So I took that phone into Sprint yesterday and they gave me a new phone, within 30 days. Any replacement should be a new phone and not a refurbished one within the initial 30 days of purchase.
Point being is that they new phone to me doesn't pick up a signal as well as the other Evo 3D that I had. We have an Airave at work and the old phone would have max bars and crystal clear, today first day with the new phone was at about 2 or so bars and the one phone call was very well lets just say not so crystal clear.
Recommend you take the phone back and ask them to test it. They can test the phone for you, and worst case swamp it out for you. Don't recommend PRL hacks since those tend to get people kicked out of Sprint due to excessive roaming.

Sprint 4G is on a different radio than data/voice, WiMax vs CDMA/1Rxx.
If you search for say "carrier name" PRL July 2011, you should be able to find a current file. Download the file, open QPST Service Programming, click the tab "Roam" and put the file location in "Preferred Roaming". I don't think you have a dud. Rather than bars, what are your actual speeds using something like Speed Test from the Market. I've had well....more than 3 of these E3D's, lol, and only 1 got half-ass decent speeds out of the box. With some re-provisioning and data reset methods in the General section I got all of them to set up correctly on the network.

anyone swap and got a better radio in phone?

hey guys, have any of you swapped because of bad radio and gotten one that works good? Almost out of time here, and sold evo 4g already. My evo worked pretty decent at my house, the 3d is pretty unusable here. Cell standby says time without a signal is 80% over 8 hours. My old evo would be like 2%. I dont wanna ditch it at this point, but need a phone more than yt3d.

i must have a really good radio, just under 14 percent, 14 hours on...
I returned my first one for other reasons but both radios were bad at my house. My 4G was fine. I switched prl several times but didn't want to be roaming at home and didn't solve the issue anyway. Called Sprint and they sent me airwave (internet based signal booster) free. Works great.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
I didn't need an airwave till I had my 3d. I was always roaming in the house also, but its fine anywhere else.
It seems to range from bad to terrible. On second e3d...went through 5 at the store before I returned first one...another 4 when I got second one...."bad"is as good as it gets....but thats just the meter, seems to perform almost as good as my e4g....i think they might have switched the meter from 2g on e4g to 3g on e3d.....it seems to be on par with my e4g on cm7 which measured 3g strength as opposed to sense roms which measured 2g (voice) strength so far as I recall.
Unfortunately that seems to set the threshold for roaming.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
Any of you swap after running the temp perm root? I've rebooted a couple times and its still rooted.
I would roam sometimes on evo and usually was like a bar or 2, but the 3d will drop a call at home while still ringing. Everyone says i sound choppy, and usually cant talk more than a minute or 2 without dropping. really sucks.
ok, turned off fast boot and restarted, titanium doesnt have permissions anymore so I guess that killed the root, gonna go swap.
swapped, alittle better, still think the radio is weaker then the evo's.

Data Reception Rocks!

I read a lot of people were claiming much better data reception with the Photon over their old phone, so I thought I'd put it to the test. My old phone was an Evo4G and I still have one in the house in use (completely stock running Android 2.3), so I did a side-by-side comparison test to the Photon and this is what I got using SpeedTest.net:
Tests on 3G network
Evo4G: 279kbps/157kbps/1026ms (download/upload/ping)
Photon4G: 401kbps/211kbps/ 793ms (download/upload/ping)
Results: Photon was 44% faster on download, 34% faster on upload and 23% faster ping
Tests on 4G network
Evo4G: 3203kbps/188kbps/357ms (download/upload/ping)
Photon4G: 6454kbps/563kbps/274ms (download/upload/ping)
Results: Photon was 101% faster on download, 199% faster on upload and 23% faster ping
It is also important to note that the Evo had a lot of trouble running the test in 3G because the signal was so weak. For each good test it took about 10 tries while the Photon had no problems and I never had to retry a test in 3G on the Photon. Results shown are the average of the fastest 8 runs out of 10. This is except for the Evo 3G runs which were the average of only 6 runs because of the difficulty I had getting it to run at all on 3G. Thus, the 3G runs are biased towards the Evo since I removed more than two very slow runs and the differences on 3G may be understated (Evo may be slower than I am reporting on 3G).
Conclusion: Data Reception Rocks on the Photon4G!
This is what I've seen in numerous reviews and although I can't get a hold of one myself yet to do my own testing against my aging Epic, customers have been complaining of reception issues. Any word on others who might be experiencing this issue around you? It might just be a bad batch received.

You misread the data. The Photon is much faster than the Evo4G. The higher the uploading and downloading numbers, the faster the data transfer. The smaller the ping number, the faster the data transfer. The Photon was faster in all measurements.
I will confirm AGAIN that the Motorola Photon absolutely has much better signal strength and faster, more stable data connection on 3G and 4G. This is the main reason I choose to keep it and put my EVO 3D back in the box and in my bottom drawer.
Wow that's impressive! How can anybody argue with that, being you have tested with all those different phones? Good to know. Thanks.
PS: Shhhh.... keep it on the DL!!! Let's hope Sprint doesn't get wind of this awesome reception or they will probably pull a Verizon and cripple the hell out of it so it barely works. Then we're all back to craptastic again.
I have to disagree with you about the Photon's reception 'cause mine SUCKS. I tried updating my profile and it didn't help. I tried updating my PRL several times and each time I got an error. I even tried going to a different part of the hous to update my PRL and it still failed with an error.
I can't even get this phone to connect to the market! Everytime I try I either get a timed out message or a no connection message.
And to add insult to injury it won't let me do a factory reset ( so I can return this piece f junk) until the battery is at 25%. The stupid thing has been on the charger for at least 45 minutes and it won't go past 20%.
On the positive side the voice connection seeems to work just fine. But I didn't get this to be a voice only phone I got it because every review I read said that it had fantastic data reception.

Sounds like you have an issue with something. Check my thread about faster data speeds see if that helps. Click my name to view my topics.

Thanks but I already returned it.
I really think I'm gonna just have to bite the bulle & pay Sprint's ETF so I can try T-Mobile. I'm having even worse reception problems on my Epic 4G.
Why did u return it...it was software or hardware related.....photons kill on signal
U should of tried a full wipe and restore if that didn't fix it then warranty the phone

Even worse on Epic = Photon Reception is *****in
But before you pay the ETF maybe you should just go grab a t-mo phone on contract for a day or two, see if the signal works for you, if it does then drop sprint and have your number ported to Tmo. This could save you the ETF if TMo isn't any better.
Depending on your area, TMos network signal will probably be stronger since they are GSM - takes less antenna to cover area with GSM than CDMA.

I did two factory resets & it didn't make any difference.
I might try another Photon. I called Sprint about my EVO 4g's reception problems & they were able to get it working again.
I don't know why I didn't think to try that with the Photon. That was a very nice phone
Or maybe I'll crawl back to Verizon. Verizon just installed a new tower by me in august and they have 4G in my area.

Stop me from jumping....

I just sold my HTC Rezound and got my Razr Maxx from someone locally only about 5 days ago. In short, I miss my Rezound.
Before anyone jumps down my throat, let me explain. I am basing this solely off my experience at work where I spend 40+ hours of my week. Other than that, I really like this phone and want it to work out for me.
In my office here at work, I have always had bad reception with Verizon, regardless of the phone. It's just the way that this building is and the fact that there isn't a Verizon tower close enough to get good reception. Supposedly they are going to install a Verizon tower in our parking lot, but who knows when or if that will really happen.
With that being said, my Rezound held 4G for most of the day, albeit barely. But it did for most of my day and when it dropped 4G, the transition to 3G was pretty seamless.
With my Maxx, I am having major problems holding 4G or connectivity at all several times throughout my work day. If I open the Play Store or apps like Facebook, it will say no connection even when the 4G icon is visible. Then it will turn white at times too.
To its credit, I get good reception outside of work and at home which is true for every Verizon phone that I have owned (Incredible, Thunderbolt, Charge, Rezound).
So what gives? Without going back to a Rezound, what are my other options? The Nexus is much worse in this department correct?
Any advice would help, thanks!
Nexus is horrible in reception department. I know exactly what you mean with the white 4G no connection issue. I get it all the time too...even with 4G showing full bars. Also when I open the browser its just white and froze.

So, it's not just me? LOL
It's getting pretty ridiculous. Today I can barely do anything with it at work, it's not holding much of anything.
Is this a known network issue? Because if not, I will have to dump this phone unfortunately.
Yeah I don't know if it's the battery or what but 4G reception seems hit or miss on my Razr Maxx, it usually works great but in fringe areas it's shakier than I'd like.
That said, I use my office's wifi (where 4G reception sucks) and keep my phone on 3G unless I need to download things. So it isn't a huge issue.
I can't go back to a smaller battery, though.
Just as an update, the reception is embarrassingly bad today. I can't connect to anything data related. Connection keeps going in and out.
My Rezound would connect to everything daily. Only problem is that I don't want another Rezound lol.
Decisions, decisions....
the nexus has horrible signal issues, don't get one. as far as the maxx and signal/4g i get 10x better signal strength than i had with my rezound or nexus. if you want, install the .209 ics leak. it gave me much better 4g reception and speeds.
could also be you just do not have good verizon service where you are and no phone will fix that.

I definitely don't have good Verizon service where my office is located as I said in the OP. But, even with that said, my Rezound always held a data connection, and mostly 4G at that.
I have no idea why this phone with supposed better radios can't match that. It's very, very disheartening.
I will try the ICS leak. Is the .209 one the one where you can't go back to stock if you wanted to? That might be an issue for me.
Thanks!

There is none that they know of. I went into a Verizon store tonight and they installed a new sim for me.
I have had strong signal since then, but I'm not at work and I usually get good signal at home.
If I don't have good signal tomorrow at work I will just have to face the sad reality that this phone won't play nice at work. Then I will have to make a decision from there.

Have you tried simply turning 4G off? Basically, go to the network settings and turn it to CDMA only, instead of CDMA+LTE. 2-3 bars of 3G is better than 0-1 bars of 4G. At least while you're at work.
Are you sure it's not a defective unit?

It happen on my atrix 2 too.
Before i was using htc hero and it held 3g in my office even it only 1 or 2 bar,but with my atrix 2 it stay on edge and sometimes no connectivity. I guess motorola has bad antenna and i'm planning to get htc rezound.
Sorry for my bad english.

That's the thing, Motorola is top notch with antennas, HTC is next best, as I have the Rezound, signal is great but I'm still leading towards defective unit.

I put 3 on my back cover, but no luck.
I keep awaiting for bootloader unlock for razr and atrix 2,maybe custom kernel will do some trick on signal to keep hold on 3g although it's only 1 or 2 bar. Because from my experience, motorola will get no connectivity when it drop to 2 or 1 bar of 3g.

Do what? Put that sticker on my back cover? Actually i really did it,i even add a piece of aluminium foil to get more signal. LOL
Let's laugh together
That's is the stupid idea that i did to get the phone hold on 3g,and if you read our atrix2 forum, most of us got a bad data connectivity.
I'll wait until ics comes out,if it still have a lock bootloader or connection issue, then maybe i'll jump to another boat (no more moto, this is the last)

It might possibly be, but I'm not leaning towards that as I'm getting good reception and connection at home.
It's only happening at work where nobody gets good Verizon signal to begin with. Only problem is my rezound was holding enough signal and not dropping but this phone is dropping.
My conclusion so far is that the rezound holds weak signals better and the MAXX just drops them.
