Home key action - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have just had my SGS2 replaced because of a broken screen, My old phone's home button worked in a different way to this one I was wondering how I revert back?
If i pressed the home key once on the old phone it would take me to the last used desktop, pressing it a 2nd time would take me to the home screen (far left)
With this new phone if I press the home button it just takes me to the homescreen selector app.
both phones are stock and running touchwiz.

is it because you have more than one launcher? maybe you could select one of them and tick the set as default checkbox?
how did you break your screen? sounds serious...

No I only have one launcher installed. When I plugged my phone into keis I noticed that there was a firmware upgrade available, I have now installed this and it has solved the problem.
How I broke my screen? Well I don't want to scare anyone as it has changed my views on this phone, but here goes:
my phone was only a month old and had never been dropped or miss used in anyway infact it was quite the opposite.
all I did to break my phone was put it in my pocket! And drove my car for ten minutes! I did have an old pair of jeans on at the time so they wher a bit tight but the phone should be able to handle this! I guess when I have pressed the clutch pedal my phone has twisted and there was a crack across the lcd (internally)
So don't put your phone in your pocket if the pocket isn't very big!

Sounds like you had it in your back pocket. I avoid tight jeans as much as possible. Don't want to break my precious phone!

[MAYBE FIX?] Home button gone bad

Hi,
Got my s2 pretty much as soon as they were released on o2 and it's been great until now, but the home button has just become 'rattly'. There's more movement and noise before the button engages, as if something has broken underneath it.
Anyone else experienced this?
Just hoping o2 will replace with a new phone, and not refurbished..
Edit:
May have fixed this - I pushed left and right sides of button with both thumbs reasonably firmly (but not hard), and the button seemed to click back into place..
Bought mine on the 5th of may, no noise/rattling here.
Spoke to o2 and they're happy to replace, but have no stock now..

Bit worrying that this isnt an isolated problem.
Would be interested to know how long it takes for it to develop for other people's phones?
It's worse for me on the left side of the button, same for you too?

I noticed this yesterday, too, on the right side. I've had the phone for 17 days.
I've updated the first post with what I think is a fix.
I have this rattling too, noticed it yesterday. Pressing it firmly fixes the issue for some 10-20 clicks - but then it's back again.
Same here.. Often the button clicks but there is no registration only when pressing it firmly it will exucte,
It just started on mine too it seems.
Home Botton issue..
I hate the home button, I like the buttons on the Samsung Captivate better.
I had a issue with my home button, after I put on an aftermarket screen protector. I tried to use water to help apply the protector, and it seemed to have gotten behind the button, causing it not to work after drying. After tearing apart the phone and getting behind the boards I didn't see a way to the button, it seems you have to separate the screen from the frame to get to the electronics behind the frame (most likely destroys the phone). I did notice double-sided sticky tape behind the frame, most likely industrial type.
Put the phone back together and got some Flux-Off that I had for cleaning circuit boards , applied it at the button just as the water got into it. Fixed my issue and the button is making good contact now.
All that just for me to say, it worked better with the older design.
I don't know about your buttons, but mine has stopped rattling. Perhaps some glue needed more time to settle.

power button

i just recieved my evo 3d today threw ups. and i noticed my power button is hard to press to turn the screen off... anyone else ran into this problem?
The button is built into the battery cover so remove it and place it back on.

make sure your battery door is completely on and snapped in the correct spots.
i have issues where either the power button is way too easy to press or way too hard. hopefully a new case will solve that.
I had a badly dysfunctional power switch with my first 3VO, I have since exchanged it for a new one.
And, no, in my case it was not the battery cover-power switch interface, it was the switch itself. I removed the cover and directly pressed it. Strange thing was, with mine, if I removed and replaced the battery, I could get one or two presses that registered, otherwise nothing -- no wake/sleep, no power off/on.
My wife and I both have Evo 3d's and her power button is way easier to push than mine. I switched the back covers between the phones and the problem followed the cover. I looked at both and the power button on my cover isn't molded correctly where it pushes on the phone. It is shorter so it sits further in the phone and doesn't work quite right. I called HTC and Sprint and there isn't a replacement cover available yet so they are going to switch out the phone.
I had a power button issue, where if I pushed the button, it would come up with the shutdown menu and no option just turn off the screen. Was in the process of going take it back for a replacement and found that when I removed the case to switch the memory card that my one was working as it should. The hardness went away and the option to turn off the screen came back. Strangest thing I seen since it truly seemed like a hardware issue.
i am going to check a few out in store and see if mine is like what you describe. To me its set pretty low and the button doesnt stick out very far.
Mine sticks out pretty far... isn't easy, or hard to press. I guess i got lucky.
Mine is really touchy, when I press it to lock the phone it sometimes goes to the shutdown popup. Sorry this post wasn't more helpful to the op, lol, just sharing.

Overly sensitive power button?

Has anyone noticed the power button being extra sensitive? That is to say, on the Hero/Evo, you had to hold the power button for at least 2 seconds before the pop-up Power Options menu would display. On my 3vo, it pops up in less than a second. I'm finding it slightly annoying, because the space between "sleep" and "power options menu" is too narrow.
Not mine....

work on reseating the back shell of the phone, i had the issue too at first and i thought it was a defect, but i played with it a couple times and got it to work like a normal power button
Nope not at all, I actually have to press it more than once sometimes and harder the second time for it to work......
yea mine is a lil sensitive...cant have it my pocket because of it..pulled it out a couple times and the phone bouncing around in my pocket opened apps and almost called ppl
Throw an OtterBox on there....
you have to give it a little lovin- WON"T happen by accident.
Also - saved my3D from a nice 5 foot drop courtesy of some Crazy 3 yr olds on the 4th.
mine is like that and I hate it!!!
U guys have cases on the phone? I guess not

I actually find the new power button a little bit better to my liking, a lot easier to find in a blind poweron. But I do agree that it might be a little too sensitive. I've found that the phone turns itself on while in my pocket - which is a bad thing because on shake the led flashlight turns on lol! Of course that kills the battery...
Also when trying to turn on or off... sometimes i see the turn off, reboot menu pop up which just simply put, never happened with the evo og. And while i like the ease of use and how fast it reacts to turning off/on, it seems to be a bit of a problem ATM
not not at all sensitive. it's actually under sensitive. some time i get frustrated because i have to push it so hard in the exact sweet spot just to get it to turn on. after having it for over a week now it's getting better, but at first i couldn't even get the thing turned on.
Not mine in fact mine is kinda hard to push. I'm going to the Sprint store I bought mine from this weekend to see if I can get it switched out because I have light leaking through the ring that surrounds the search key, and it bugs the hell out of me lol. So I hope my new one is gonna be normal.
This happens to me with or without the case. I did have a very brief time where the power button would not respond at all, and discovered that the back was causing it (I had swapped the OEM 8G card for my 32).
I don't think this is a big enough problem for me to try and swap the phone out, although it is a little annoying. I suppose in time I'll learn not to push the power button too long.
I have the same problem with the sensitive power button but I'm on a Samsung Galaxy S. I'm wondering if there is dust in the way... Anybody ever find a fix or diagnose the problem for this? I've seen the same problem across multiple devices on the forums so I am starting to believe its a wear and tear type of thing.
Mine is kinda sensitive. But not as sensitive as the one I saw at my local sprint store. Interesting how it seems like no two EVOS are the same.
Good thing though is that since the button is built into the backcover... Maybe picking up another one can deliver a more sensitive/stiff experience.

[Q] Disable Home Button Unlock?

OK, so I've had this phone for just a few days now, love it aside from the physical home button. Not a fan of it at all, but now I've found myself going to the unlock screen when I put the phone in my pocket. Can the home button to unlock screen be tuned off? I just want the "power button" to unlock the screen.
Please help as this is driving my wife and I nuts with these!!!
Thanks in advance!
Hey,
Sorry, but it's a mystery, how you can power on your screen with home button.
You should also have trouble with the power button also, as it's on the side.
Either you wear very tight pants, or your pockets are very narrow ;-)
Side button is not a problem as I have had a Captivate and Skyrocket before, but my big mitts get in the way! ... and I have having problems with putting it in cargo short pockets, lol.
Nobody made an app or anything to take this button out of commision while screen is turned off?

I've seen this exact issue with both my old SGS2 and my new SG Note 2.
For me at least, it looks like this only happens with 3rd party lock screen apps. Most have a built-in workaround that basically just sets that locker to the default launcher so that when you press the Home key at any point, it locks the screen. This keeps it from unlocking, but also makes the home key virtually pointless and disallows you from using any 3rd party launcher.
So right now I'm stuck having to use the stock locker app, since I'd much rather use my Nova Launcher and not risk butt-dialing people all the time...
Anyone heard any solutions for this issue yet?

non-responsive home & power buttons after water spilled

Hello everyone,
i need your help in a dillema. the background story started yesterday, when i washed my hand and tried to reach something over the sinc, the phone dropped from my jacket pocket to the sinc, drowning... :crying:
i took it within a second, of course completely wet.
i opened it completely, seperating the board, battery, speaker...taking everything out.
to be honest the main damage was the speaker. the entire board seem to be dry and the water sticker remained untouched.
after some rice-treatment and patient i turned it on.
the home button is non-responsive..only after some clicks it works.
the power button is another issue, where if i press it it thinks its a long press and a short time after (could be minutes) it reboots.
if i dont touch the power key it wont shut down is it has to be it.
i kinda hate the idea to change phone because i actually like it.
i dont see any other option at the moment (wouldnt want to go to larger screen size)
so i have a damaged speaker, home & power button.
the speaker is replaceable, thats for sure. after all, i could disassemble it completely.
what about the other keys? is it a possible operation? if i need to solder things that wouldnt be the case for me...i dont have proper equipment.
i saw the spare parts for couple of bucks, im just not sure whats possible and what not.
i wouldnt go to a lab because that will cost alot, and im not sure if it worth it.
