[SOLVED] Disable camera shutter sound - Motorola Photon 4G

Hi,
I'm trying to figure out how to disable the camera's shutter sound since it is very annoying.
I looked at /system/build.prop and there is a line that might be helpful: ro.media.capture.shuttertone=0
Can someone shed some light on this? Thanks!

Just delete the cameraclick.ogg from /system/media/ui/
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App

Exact steps over adb shell:
Code:
$ su
# cd /system/media/audio/ui
# /bin/mount -o remount,rw /system
# mv camera_click.ogg camera_click.ogg.bak
# /bin/mount -o remount,ro /system
# exit
Now if only there was a fix for it to only play when the system wasn't muted. But this is good enough for now

If you have root explorer you can just follow my directions above
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App

Well, the easier of the two is to basically combine both ideas. By using Root explorer you can go to that exact location and rename the file with a '.bak' at the end of the file. I did this and it worked like a charm. That way nothing is deleted and a backup is in tact in case you want to change it back.

If you're not rooted, someone made an app that disables system enforced sounds, and released it on the official Moto forums:
https://supportforums.motorola.com/message/443424#443424
This will mute all sounds that are otherwise unmutable. Off hand, I can't think of any besides the camera shutter, which makes this a pretty good fix.

So here's a really weird situation . . . my loud camera noise went away all by itself - honest!
Before I read very far on the camera shutter issue, I tried the vignette app to see if it would disable the sound. No dice. I uninstalled it. A couple days later I noticed that when taking a photo there was no sound at all.
I have tried to change several settings to make the sound come back (just to figure out where it went), but I can't. I'm not complaining - the sound was terribly annoying! But, I'm a little worried that I can't figure out what happened.
And no, I'm not rooted.

That's interesting because I also tried Vignette a couple of days ago but haven't used the camera since, so I just opened the camera and there's no shutter sound. However, I also found out that my camera button doesn't open the camera anymore. Does your camera button open the camera? This may take a hard reset to fix but boy I want to avoid that if I can.

Yes - my camera button starts the camera app.

Thanks. I rebooted and it's working now.

FYI - You can downlaod an apk to control the camera shutter sound if you go to the 6th reply to this thread at the Motorola Owners' Forum. I installed it and was able to turn my shutter sound back on and then back off again.

Thanks for posting....working well so far. Anyone seen any ill effects?

This app works like a charm too if you're somewhat lazy like myself. haha

There's also a separate sound file associated with the video mode - VideoRecord.ogg. Once it's renamed, the pesky sound is gone.

Root Tools
I found the easiest way too turn off the camera shutter sound is too hip into the Root Tools app hit menu then settings and click where it says "CAMERA SHUTTER SOUND ENABLE/DISABLE"

worked like a charm. Used es file explorer... mounted system as writeable and used su settings.

If you want to add the enable/disable camera option follow the steps in my thread. It will only work if you are rooted though:

[Q] How to disable camera shutter sound?

Is it possible to disable the camera shutter sound on the SGS2? It's very loud and kind of annoying.
I'm going to a wedding at the weekend and it would be nice to be able to take pictures without pissing off the entire church.
Put the phone in silent mode when using the camera that should do the trick without any trickery
Silent mode doesn't make any difference, it's still the same.
Anyone know if there's a good camera app without shutter sound I can use instead?
Even when i have it on silent mode, it still makes the shutter sound
There is no setting to disable it in camera settings anymore?
You could do it on SGS...
Try turning media volume down
You need root
Go to /system/media/ui/
Then delete the files got to do with the camera including the shutter

Yup, someone wanna chuck us the camera apk? Should be possible to fix it that way..
Or, as someone said, try renaming the sound file in media to whatever.ogg.OLD
I think all UK phones have to comply with anti-voyeurism laws which is why all phones there have the camera shutter no matter what. If you have rooted your phone I think you could easily delete or modify the shutter sound though...

Use root explorer, you can and need to enable write access in order to change/rename files at root level.

From the code, I see there should be a setting to enable or disable autofocus sound.
Can you please confirm if this exists before I go much further into this. Usually you tap menu, or press a settings button on-screen in camera to get some options.
Looks like it can be disabled.

OK. You can try pulling the APK, then removing the file in res/raw/. Delete the ogg file with the obvious name like AutoFocus.ogg (not got the file to hand)
Back up the old one before doing this! Then replace the file on the device with this one. Reboot, see if it works. If it doesn't and camera doesn't appear, then you need to restore the backup and reboot again. That should fix it
If it crashes when focussing, we need to replace the OGG with an "empty" ogg, but then re-sign the APK, which will involve editing packages.xml
while were on the subject, is it possible to remove the parental control set in place, that prevents the camera from being opened if the battery is >15%, and where it kills your music, when you open the camera? i will personally donate $25 dollars if you did that. and forever praise you as the best developer in the world
(very serious about the donation tho)

muting the camera sounds easily.

Hey Galaxiers!
I wrote some command for gscript to do that for you.
hope this helps a little
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14325513&postcount=89
I just keep getting 'can't rename (all the ogg files)'
Im on litening 1.1 rom.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
The completely non-scientific way of muting the sound, is just getting used to holding your finger over the tiny speaker hole, which pretty much mutes the sound completely.
Guessing the phone has to be rooted for this to work? I don't have my SGS2 at the moment (it's en route, RMA replacement), but I'll have to check this out. That camera sound is a pain!
Edit: nm, saw the note in the post (just had to read instead of skim lol)

Hi mate, I'm on stock... And I'm not in silent mode, everything in my sound is max out... I just noticed today that my camera sound is gone as Im not always using the camera. I do't know if this is because of the BLFB Firmware update (currently Im still in BLFB)...
It seems that no one is experiencing this again... well that's Android... now I know..

In every operating system you'll find problems noone else seems to have encountered.
Do you mean the recording sound the device emits when going into Camera mode or the audio capture of the video?

The camera sound files are stored inside a system folder on your phone. I was going to say to check to see if the files are there and play them to ensure they aren't corrupt. However, if you are not rooted, you may not be able to access them.
If you reflash your current stock rom or update your rom to the latest version from Samsung, I believe that can fix your problems.

How can it be corrupted mate if I didn't do anything to my phone (Just regular use). Previously I also had a problem with OTA update and I needed to clear the data of Software Update for it to run again.
I'm really starting to believe that this is really a buggy piece of software (Android or maybe TW of Samsung)... Even the Accuweather widget is not auto refreshing if I restarted the phone and I need to clear again the data for it to auto refresh again or run normally.
Sorry I'm just frustrated
After doing everything I could (Except the Factory Reset), my camera shutter sound is still not working.
I tried to Clear the data of camera app, restart the phone, shutdown and reopen the phone, shutdown and remove the battery then reopen the phone, tried to uninstall some apps I recently installed, and still no shutter sound
I'm about to try today the "wipe cache partition" but first I tried again to shutdown and reopen my phone and guess what, now my shutter sound is back!
Only difference is currently I dont have any internet connection on my phone (No Wifi / Mobile data). Weird! :silly:

Everything stock mate... Everything is working fine now... I guess this is a Touchwiz problem or worst this is an android thing. I searched the net and there are others experiencing this using different devices... Maybe this is an android bug, I'm not sure as it hard to replicate this problem and theres no accurate solution... :silly:
Check this if you are rooted
How to enable on/off button for Shutter sound:
Edit /system/csc/feature.xml with text editor of choice.
Add following lines:
<!-- Enable/disable the camera shutter sound -->
<CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>true</CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>
Reboot, Voila, now you can enable/disable shutter sound from camera menu. (I'm on BLG8)
Credits to PaWill
I'm also having this same problem...
Let me start from the beginning...
I got the phone from Vodafone Portugal. It came with the ICS rom, but right away I updated with the first polish JB rom. Also put root on it.
I'm constantly updating roms, so I tried most new roms that were releasing, mostly unbranded roms, from France, UK, India, etc... I did some dirty flashes but sometimes I flashed from the ground, full wipe...
Also, never used a custom rom for example...
I don't remember when did it happen, but somehow, camera stop making sounds, shutter sound and selection sounds... I also lost the sound setting from camera menu options...
I never, but never modified that aspect. And with a option do enable/disable sound shutter, why would I need to disable sound shutter with another method?!?!
A few weeks ago, I was on XELLA, and I added that camera line on the feature.xml file. No sounds I got...
By the way, the camera sounds are on a folder inside /system/ and they work perfectly , they are not broken
Today, I updated, dirty flash over XELLA, the new vodafone rom XERM2. I was with no hope to get the sounds...
I remember to check feature.xml on the system/csc folder to see if it was there, but the file was removed. I had a couple of modifications (including the line for the shutter sounds). So I restored an old backup that I had from the file. I set permissions and reboot.
I got a half surprise, guess what, I regain the Camera Sound settings from camera menu options.
The bad thing is that I still can't get any shutter or any other sounds from the camera app
Any ideas?!?! Please!!! I want Camera sounds back!!! Need help please!!!

Ok, here's the elephant in the room. People are up in arms about Kingo root because it's an unknown and they're afraid it'll send information back to them. Yet, this "camera silencer" app is just a download without any transparency t all, not through the Play store and we're supposed to just trust that it doesn't gather up a lot of stuff and send it back home? Crazy.

It definitely disables the camera sound, however after a while it reenables certain options i prefer to keep disabled. Primarily the touch sound (every time you touch the screen it makes a sound).

Camera shutter sound

Hey everyone
I just got this phone and so far it's been cool and good, I really like it despite the display quality being off in perspective to my galaxy s6
Anyways, I digress, in the camera app I can turn the shutter sound off but it seems that any other third party app like Snapchat or Instagram keep this shutter sound
It's really bugging, I need it gone so I don't disturb people around me or something...
Things I've tried:
Screenshot sound off
Camera sound off from camera settings
Phone to silent
Phone to DND
All volume sliders to 0
Nothing works, any idea before I throw root on it and delete some files?
I didn't find anything that'd work.
Decided to unlock and install LOS 16.
All good now, except IR Camera and hotspot.

I'm pretty sure you can delete the file camera_click.ogg from system/media/audio/ui
Make sure to keep a backup first of the file in case something goes wrong.
Additional files related to camera sounds that may need to be deleted to are: camera_focus.ogg, videorecord.ogg, videostop.ogg
