Kies??? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had my SII for a couple weeks now. Love it. BUT, Kies is a real piece of garbage. Having come from a Windows phone and Microsoft's lousy ActiveSync software, I didn't think it would be possible to find a syncing product worse than AS. But Kies is FAR worse. It worked once, the first time I tried it. It has never worked since. I've read all the comments here and tried all the recommendations. Nada! I AM able to connect using the USB Mass Storage function, so all is not lost. But obviously, I'm not going to be able to do any updates (unless I misunderstand how Samsung issues the updates), which is extremely disappointing. Sad, sad, sad.

Make sure usb debugging is off and that the drivers are correctly installed. Also make sure your rom actually supports kies.

Thanks for your response. I had checked all of the items you mentioned. So...I uninstalled both Kies and the USB driver and did a reinstall. Kies started. I then disconnected and reconnected. Worked again. Up popped firmware update. I'm a little hesitant to update since the phone has been great. What do you think? Should I update? And can you tell me how long the updating will take, normally?
-Bob-

If you haven't rooted it just update via KIES, should take around 10 minutes.

Try different USB-connector on your computer. Some of them arent working properly. It happened me. And I changed USB-connection. And it worked. Might help you!

+1 ifind that the rear USB slots are best for kies/Odin/syncing. The front ones never seem to work 100%.

Thanks for all the responses. After the re-install all seems to work fine.
Regarding rooting the phone (my next project): Will rooting disable Kies? If so, how do you handle firmware updates?
Love this phone!

No it doesn't.
My phone came with T-Mobile UK KE3. rooted it (just to make sure that it worked). Loaded the KE7 ROM (UK stock) to get rid of the T-Mobile stuff. Rooted it again. a few days later on I downloaded and ran the KF3 (UK stock) through the Samsung software. Lost root.
I finally rooted it again.
So rooting it doesn't affect the updates and debranding to stock means that the upgrade will also be stock.

[Q] USB connect with Windows 7 x64 - PLEASE!

I've had my AT&T galaxy S2 for a week now, upgraded from the Captivate. Mildly impressed, but very very disappointed that i can't even connect it to my laptop for file transfers--because I have win 7 x64. Even my captivate connected to it!
I talked to samsung, they don't have a win7 x64 driver for it yet. They recommended the Kies Air application, which i tried, and is so antiquated and SLOWWW that it is unbearable to use. For example, transferring photos must be done max 20 at a time, and at a very slow transfer rate--when it works. Other times upon tranfer it says "Error: Network error occurred"
Oh and then Samsung's next piece of advice was to just reinstall my OS to the 32 bit version. WHAT!??!
If i can't transfer music and movies from computer to my phone, and i can't transfer my pictures from my pictures from the phone to my computer... i've actually downgraded from my captivate.
Anyone have any solutions? Or do i return this new phone, which i anxiously awaited and purchased the day it came out...?
Uninstall ANY and ALL drivers that have to do with Kies or a Samsung phone. Reboot ur computer and phone. Install Kies and see what happens. I had that problem when I had a couple droid phones but uninstalling and reinstalling everything seems to fix it.
Works fine on my Win7 64 laptop and desktop.
entropism -- what drivers are you using, the 32 bit ones?
Have you tried alternate USB ports on your computer? Does it show anything or give you any indication that a connection is being made?
Oh and I'm on W7 x64 myself and haven't had any issues but installed Kies before I did anything.
it shows the battery charging, phone beeps when plugged in... OS says "installing device driver..." and then shortly says "(X) Driver was not successfully installed." and that is the end of story so far.
.. and you guys that say you are successfully connected, is this for full USB download mode (like my captivate where it just sees it basically like flash drive on your computer)? or is it via the kies interface? thanks for all responses.

The drivers on the Samsung site for the GS2. It was working fine without them, but I installed for the heck of it. I'm not using KIES to connect, just enabling USB storage on the phone when I connect.

Mine is for full USB mode so I can see my sdcard contents, etc. It also works fine with Kies.
Also try a NEW data cable, after a while they get flaky.

There are two USB modes on AT&T GS2: the default MTP mode and the Mass Storage mode. To enable Mass Storage mode, you will have to go to Setting->Wireless settings and network->USB utilities.
I have no problem on two of my 64-bit Win7. Drivers automatically downloaded and installed.
Looks like your Win64 install has some issues.
Well guys, i've tried uninstalling all KIES and samsung drivers/softwares, rebooting, then reinstalling the sg2 driver from samsung's site, new data cable, still no luck.
How do I enable USB storage on the SG2? I guess it was automatically enabled on the captivate. I'm a computer guy, it seems like i'm being slow on this, or this is really not user friendly. Thank you guys for the responses and help so far.

[Q] Impression i7 Tablet

I was recently shopping for a knock-around tablet and came across leaderinternationalinc dot com this little guy at Kmart. Yep, I said Kmart. When I asked the price and they told me $129, I said SOLD!.
So far it's been average in performance and had to do some trickery to get some apps installed (Android/Amazon Market, Pandora, Google Talk, etc.) and am still having some difficulty installing other apps. It seems as if they really want you to use their market and apps, some of which are okay, I guess. I got Netflix installed, but the audio/video isn't in sync and everything is a hue of blue. Might be a Flash Player issue - also which I can't seem to update.
Anyway, the bad news is I can't find a way to get in to bootloader or able to root this tab with oneclick. Hopefully they didn't lock this thing down to hard.
Additionally, since the screen is resistive, using a stylus makes it a bit easier to navigate. Worth the money so far!
I'm praying the brilliant dev brains here at XDA will purchase this one and create a simple root/rom that allows me to take this thing to the next level!
Anybody out there?
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

Were you able to get the standard Market installed on it? I was able to get it along with Pandora, Google Voice and a couple others (Netflix not working well) with a little trickery. Still can't get Google Talk and a few other things like an updated Flash.
If I can get a plain vanilla Froyo on this I would give this cheap little tab a solid B.
#bonus
I know this doesn't have anything to do with my original [Q], but I thought I would share anyway...
I contacted Impression about another AC adapter... 1 isn't enough...
After I registered my device, they shipped me another for free!
Any devs out there for this one?
just return it and get another one, a tablet thats $129 is probably not going to be great at that price.. other than the time hp touchpads were $99
Yeah, it's not the snappiest device I've owned, but makes a great desk-side companion. Mainly use it for Pandora, Weather, IM and a few other things...I'm generally still happy with it although I know it won't replace my primary device. Having the (free) second AC adapter is nice so I don't have to carry that back and forth. 2 hours of streaming music kills the battery dead.
Stay plugged in with this one.
Still hoping, praying that a dev picks one of these up...

You can install the Android Market without any funny business. Just download the apk and install. Still think this device can perform much better if it just had vanilla froyo... Hope someone cracks it.

I used super1click, the newest version. It didnt work the first few times, i ended up doing shell root first, then was able to achieve root as normal. It did seem to take a while.
Edit: I just rooted a 2nd i7.... had the same trouble with it just hanging during root. When it hangs, quickly unplug the usb the replug it in. Once it detects usb debugging again it will root properly and pass the verification at the end.
Hope that helps

Just attempted rooting it myself with Superoneclick.
Did shell root first and that went fine. Attempted normal root right after and it hung right at the end when it said the device was rooted and would restart. Unplugged and replugged the usb quickly and then it rebooted.
My i7 was definitely not rooted when it rebooted. Not sure what went wrong. Attempted it numerous times with the same result sadly. Did it hang right at the end for you or at a different point during the root?

When it hangs at the end it never worked for me. Id suggest trying the different methods to root instead of auto....i just pretty much tried everything until i goot root to stick...if it hangs during root steps thats when to unplug and replug.

[Q] How do I flash ICS Litening Rom with CW and keep my settings

Hello,
I have a couple of problems.
I've been using Litening Rom for months now and I liked using it a lot.
I would like to upgrade to the ICS version of it now.
Here come the problems.
Ever since I rooted the phone, none of my computers recognize my SGS2. I've used clockwork to flash other ROMs on it, but no computer will talk to my phone. Charging via USB obviously works. Switching the phone to USB-tethering, or to debugging don't work either. I've tried installing different drivers, installing Kies etc. but nothing seems to work.
If you have any ideas on how to fix the USB-connection, please let me know.
So the first question basically is: Can I fix my USB connection?
Second problem:
How do I install litening rom ICS without the use of ODIN? Can the odin-compatible image of litening rom 2.0 be converted into a clockwork compatible zip-file?
Third problem:
How do I keep all my data, and program settings, after upgrading to ICS?
I use K-9 mail, the stock SMS app and what's app.
Is there maybe a way to migrate the settings, apps and widgets when upgrading to ICS?
Thanks to all of you.
1. You need to install samsung drivers
2. You can flash Littening rom with odin mobile
3. You can back up what you can with TB, after will set again. Upgrade from GB to ICS need always a full wipe. Good luck
thanks for the quick reply.
1. I have Samsung drivers installed. On the 4 PCs I use, a SGS1 works with the same cable I use for the SGS2. The phone charges, but there is no reaction in Windows. It won't even look for drivers to install as it doesn't realize there is a device.
2. I've seen that option, too, however the free version only does the Kernel and I don't know, what more there is to a ROM.
3. I don't know, what TB means.
Thanks again.

Try entering *#7284# into the dialer. This will bring up a service menu. USB should have PDA selected. If it doesn't, select PDA. If it does, change it to Modem, then back to PDA. After that, try your USB connection again.

Thank you guys so much for all the fast replies.
I got the TB = Titanium backup. Thanks
I'll give it a go and see, what happens.
I used CW's backup feature, so worst case, I'll have to go back to the old litening image.
The issue buying from Android market is, that I don't have a private credit card, only the business ones and I can't use it on an app to help cracking my phone.
What is a SGS2 cable?
Is there anything special about it, other than a standard micro-USB cable, that I'm not aware of?
I hadn't tried the *#7284#. It was set to pda. Changed it, restartet, changed it back. Restarted again. No change.
I opened the phone today and had a little look for corroded contacts and cleaned them, but everything looked fine and no change.
I ordered a new USB socket for the phone and will change it, once it arrives. It really looks like a hardware failure to me, if it is the USB socket, we'll know by the weekend.

I think you voided the warranty when you opened the phone and changed the part yourself... But major props for doing so!
You just might be right, that the warranty is voided, but sending the phone back for repair was not an option.
What are you going to do with no phone for 6 weeks? So, you actually need to buy another one.
Buying and reselling another phone is a bigger drain on the wallet than buying a 15€ spare part and 20 minutes to fix it. Exchanging the part was no biggie. It's just a matter of loosening 9 little screws with an appropriate screw driver and having a credit card handy to open up the phone.... oh and make sure that your wife leaves the vacuum switched off until your successfully put everything back together.
True enough on the vacuum!
or alternatively you could make yourself a nandroid backup from CWM, flash ICS to your device. then restore app/app+data/data only using AppExtractor.
AppExtractor free version only allow us 5 restores per batch, but it works
My opinion, after a cwm backup just flash with Odin. You should still.have all your apps, settings etc.
People say you need to do a wipe beforehand but I flashed ics lpq coming from gb and all worked fine, other than the known ics bugs (scrolling, incompatible apps etc). So I backed up ics with cwm and restored my gb backup.

The AppExtractor tip was excellent. Took care of my K9-Emails perfectly.
However, on the text messages it didn't really work. Only thing it did was wipe the other messages I had received after the flash. :-(
Can you guys recommend a better app to handle them, where maybe the import would work.

[Q] Just another bootloop, but on a stock rom.

I googled for hours, and now i give up and ask here what to do.
My friends brought two Galaxy Ace s5830i from UAE. One works good, the other one not. Friend says he just turned the screen off and put the phone into pocket, and after that there were bootloop.
He never flashed any roms and stuff, doesn't have root, he is just a user who use stock things. He even hasn't downloaded any non-market apps, but he says some strange things about "I was playing angry birds, then I got some danger notification from samsung, I haven't read it, just pressed ok, and for some time everything was ok, but then blah blah blah", i don't know what that was.
He hasn't got any custom recovery either, and he has no warranty in our country.
Factory reset didn't help.
Odin can't see the phone (both 1.85 and 4.38).
Now they also say that their phones were taken somewhere for 20 minutes to "add russian language", the question is how? Flashing another stock rom? I am totally lost.
It seems so silly, but i don't know what to do.
Any ideas?

No recovery, no download mode. Just the same bootloop after reboot.
Kies can't connect too.
I usually tell people to try making a USB jig as their last resort, since they cant boot into download mode.
That's a cheap way to fix it.

I am a female (living with another two females) fixing the phone for male.
I am not that dumb, but I don't have skills or equip to make that jig thingy.
Though, I like the idea, so I would give it a try. Thank you.
300KOhm, 1/4W is okay or 301 needed?
You can find the details here:
http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-hacks/how-to-make-a-usb-jig-for-your-galaxy-s2/
Even though it says it's for the S2 it should work on SGA as well.
This guy on ebay listed a few phones by samsung:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Samsung-Galaxy-Ace-S5830-Fix-Download-USB-jig-MUST-HAVE-/130541952765
And if you would be able to get into download mode in the future, DONT use kies. I would rather stick with ODIN. I havent heard anyone getting their phone bricked using ODIN. A lot of people on XDA seem to have bricked their phone using kies, even my friend became a victim after the first day using his phone.
unfortunately, russian post is ****ty post. it would take too long, i'm afraid. will try to make or to find it here.

[Q] USB Problem - KIES not recognizing the phone

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So I am on stock but somehow, KIES wont work. It keeps saying connecting, but wont go further than that.
USB debugging is unchecked so I am sure that it not the problem. I heard T-Mobile for ICS upgrade, so I just wanted to be prepared for ICS update for ATT, but idk, why KIES is not working.
Any suggestions?
Bent USB prong in the phone? I've had to adjust mine several times since I got it launch day. Or hardware failure. When my USB was bent it could still charge via a wall charger

yeah I think it works when i use at a certain angle.
I am trying to go back to the stock rom and hopefully i can return it, but for some reason Odin is not recognizing it. I mean the yellow box of COM:0 does not show up in the "I777UCKH7-CL503881-No-BL.exe"
Do you know the reason for this?
Missing driver.
IIRC I believe you were supposed to install KIES and another Samsung driver...but I remember using my phone on a netbook without it and it worked...
Try installing the USB driver on the official samsung website? I can't post links yet or I would link it...

There can be multiple possible reasons. You've eliminated some of them. Could be a failing usb port on the phone, bad cable, etc.
If you can't get usb to work, you can flash back to stock using mobile odin. I assume you are rooted. Just download the one-click downloader to your phone over wifi, or use dropbox or something to get it onto your phone. Mobile odin will recognize and flash from the one-click downloader. There is even a guide in the general section on how to do this.

Creepy just posted this while I was getting you the link for the guide to return to stock with no PC: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1691659.
I returned to stock, and I think I figured out the problem as well.
The problem I am quite sure is the USB port on the phone. Like I said, when I keep the USB cable connected at a certain angle, it works just fine.
I will just have to live with it now I think because ODIN displays custom binary installed and the count is 2, so I dont think ATT will let me exchange the phone for a new one.

ehhh, its worth a try. Thats a hardware failure, the one that samsung is known for. Mine is starting to go out too.
I've returned 1 rooted phone with this issue, and warranty'd 1 rooted one that had a broken LCd.
These were Infuse's but same damn samsung problem.

Yeah I am surprised these hardware problem are so common.
No wonder most people are crazy about Apple sells so many iPhones
I had the very same issue as you are describing.
All you need to do is tweak the USB port a little. Did mine about 3 or 4 months ago and have not had to touch it since.
Use a small precision screw driver, fold a couple layers of Kleenex over the tip and gently bend it towards the screen side of the phone.
It WILL work perfect after that.

Will try it for sure. Thank you for mentioning which way to bend the port towards. lol

Try uninstalling/reinstalling. That would be my first step.

I did that like two times already.
I even flashed a different stock Rom. I mean I started with The kernel + rooted UCKH7
but then since it didnt work, I tried Kernel + cache + rooted UCKK6 package from:
