[Q] Impression i7 Tablet - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was recently shopping for a knock-around tablet and came across leaderinternationalinc dot com this little guy at Kmart. Yep, I said Kmart. When I asked the price and they told me $129, I said SOLD!.
So far it's been average in performance and had to do some trickery to get some apps installed (Android/Amazon Market, Pandora, Google Talk, etc.) and am still having some difficulty installing other apps. It seems as if they really want you to use their market and apps, some of which are okay, I guess. I got Netflix installed, but the audio/video isn't in sync and everything is a hue of blue. Might be a Flash Player issue - also which I can't seem to update.
Anyway, the bad news is I can't find a way to get in to bootloader or able to root this tab with oneclick. Hopefully they didn't lock this thing down to hard.
Additionally, since the screen is resistive, using a stylus makes it a bit easier to navigate. Worth the money so far!
I'm praying the brilliant dev brains here at XDA will purchase this one and create a simple root/rom that allows me to take this thing to the next level!
Anybody out there?

Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A

Sorry... Still a bit of a noob in forums. Where exactly was this moved to? Search provided no results. On a side note, did you buy one of these yet? ;—)
Thanks.

Looks like it's the same, but in a new place.
We're heeerreeee basit....
Were you able to get the standard Market installed on it? I was able to get it along with Pandora, Google Voice and a couple others (Netflix not working well) with a little trickery. Still can't get Google Talk and a few other things like an updated Flash.
If I can get a plain vanilla Froyo on this I would give this cheap little tab a solid B.

#bonus
I know this doesn't have anything to do with my original [Q], but I thought I would share anyway...
I contacted Impression about another AC adapter... 1 isn't enough...
After I registered my device, they shipped me another for free!
Any devs out there for this one?

just return it and get another one, a tablet thats $129 is probably not going to be great at that price.. other than the time hp touchpads were $99

Yeah, it's not the snappiest device I've owned, but makes a great desk-side companion. Mainly use it for Pandora, Weather, IM and a few other things...I'm generally still happy with it although I know it won't replace my primary device. Having the (free) second AC adapter is nice so I don't have to carry that back and forth. 2 hours of streaming music kills the battery dead.
Stay plugged in with this one.
Still hoping, praying that a dev picks one of these up...

Mod link? His post is the 2nd post and as I said, he already moved it to Android Q&A: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1236.

You can install the Android Market without any funny business. Just download the apk and install. Still think this device can perform much better if it just had vanilla froyo... Hope someone cracks it.

I have an i7 and I got it rooted, what factory installed .apk's are safe to remove? I prefer my own music/movie players etc....
Thanks in advance

What did you use to root? Superoneclick didn't work for me the last time I tried... Did it unlock the bootloader?

I used super1click, the newest version. It didnt work the first few times, i ended up doing shell root first, then was able to achieve root as normal. It did seem to take a while.
Edit: I just rooted a 2nd i7.... had the same trouble with it just hanging during root. When it hangs, quickly unplug the usb the replug it in. Once it detects usb debugging again it will root properly and pass the verification at the end.
Hope that helps

Just attempted rooting it myself with Superoneclick.
Did shell root first and that went fine. Attempted normal root right after and it hung right at the end when it said the device was rooted and would restart. Unplugged and replugged the usb quickly and then it rebooted.
My i7 was definitely not rooted when it rebooted. Not sure what went wrong. Attempted it numerous times with the same result sadly. Did it hang right at the end for you or at a different point during the root?

When it hangs at the end it never worked for me. Id suggest trying the different methods to root instead of auto....i just pretty much tried everything until i goot root to stick...if it hangs during root steps thats when to unplug and replug.
Sorry i dont have a more speific solution, but i did get two rooted like this
Oh and obviously double check usb debugging is enabled

Alright. Thanks for replying. Assumed if it was hanging at the end then it wouldn't work. Just wanted a confirmation on it.

HELP! I want to root but I'm confused

I've tried many different ways to root my Photon 4G. Today, I went ahead and spend the bucks and bought the HD dock and keyboard. I know there is a way to root with the dock, but I don't know how. Can someone please walk me through rooting with the dock? I heard it's easier. Thanks!
There is a all in one root method all you have to do is plug the phone into the computer and the software does the rest.

Wow, you don't need to get HD dock for rooting since we have way to roof without dock. Try one click root and software would do the rest for you if you don't know how to root thru adb. First you need to do some setting on your phone by clicking on Setting, application, development check usb debugging, connect phone to laptop or pc, usb connection, just check Charging only, then follow one click rooting instruction.
I have tried this 7 times and no go. I installed the drivers and ran the program just like the videos say. I'm getting frustrated! Screenshot attached..

did you turn on usb debugging? did you make sure the phone usb connection was set for charing only?

[Q] Rooting problem using regawmod

I tried to root my phone using the regawmod process on my PC. i followed the steps until the first reboot…i put the debugging option on the phone when it rebooted because everything got wiped as it said it would and then the phone went completely black as if it was rebooting as it should..but never reloaded..i cant turn my phone on or anything..phone was charged to 65%..so i know it couldn’t have died that quick..What happened?? please help!
hmmmm....
not sure what to tell you man.
hold power button for a while, until you see it reboot... IF you see it reboot. should happen within ten seconds....
if you have root access..... download quickboot and try to boot into recovery.
we'll go from there.
also, plug device into comp and see if it detects it.
assuming you installed all drivers necessary and software packages from that thread, correct?
I did everything to the T...I tried to connect to the PC again and it did not detect the phone, and still wouldn't turn on..so i took it as a loss and took the phone back to the store and they gave me a new one because it wouldn't turn on...I appreciate the reply back.:good:
probably wasn't bricked, btw
This kind of makes me worry..... with what everybody has used, which would be considered the "best" to use? This is my work phone and I'm ok to root it and what-not; heck, I root my co-workers phones all the time so I'm no noob at all to this. Thanks!
I don't know what happened but I tried again, started with fresh files and it worked..I'm thinking one of the files got corrupted our wasnt being recognized by my PC...but now I'm enjoying my rooted phone!

Regaw is the best to use, I would say. This is the only case of this I've heard and I've followed the thread from day 1. A few did have it fail part way thru, but then just reran it and all went fine.
If you want S-off, there is the lazy panda method now. But I've seen way to many bricks on that thread to recommend it to anyone. But I guess they're also working constantly on a fix for those bricks and have had measured success (from what I've read).

Every one of your 4 posts have been negative on regaw's process and your experience...
Here is a little tip of advice for you that MIGHT lead you to getting actual valuable answers to your problem...
PM Regaw....I'd say post in his thread but you dont have 10 posts...
Regardless I can promise you that creating a new thread each time you try is NOT going to help your situation at all.

Well. My curiousty led to a hard-bricked phone
It's definetly official. I am not going to install any more custom roms after this. To make my story breif. I aquired a motorola atrix 2 phone, and had read it could accomdate a custom rom, so I used a one click root method program and the program said it had done its job. I booted into the recovery and installed the rom, which ended in an infinite reboot. Great, so I read more on how to revert back to firmware using rsd lite. I did this, but the battery was dead. so I went out and purchased anther battery, attempted the restore, phone restart, then BOOM. it stayed black and now it wont come on. wtf.
Can any please recommend the proper cable I have to order to get the phone back working>?

Thank you. But an experienced repair guy said my phone wasn't responding to neither the USB jtag or the fast boot. So my phone is dead forever? Should I start digging its grave?
Sure sounds this way, and you shouldn't be doing JTAG through the USB port anyway unless your phone is something special I've never heard of
But in truth rooting your phone won't damage it, it just gives someone the opportunity to do so. I'm a firm believer in rooting all androids so long as they read and understand what they are doing, its very hard to brick a phone if you know what you're doing
So although this phone may be dead forever (unless you find someone who for sure knows the proper way to JTAG it) then still consider rooting your next one, just be sure to completely understand what's going on, and try to stay away from one click roots, its hard to learn anything from this
Best of luck on your next phone
*side note, if you still have warranty and your phone is completely unresponsive chances are you will get your warranty exchange, just play dumb and say "I was playing angry birds and it just froze, now it won't turn on"

I wish I had warranty on this thing. I got it second hand from craigslist. However i've managed to acquire an HTC inspire 4G, what an upgrade from a motorola cliq xt! I would love to install jelly bean on this thing but after messing up the Atrix 2 i'm scared I will F*ck this one up too. I can never find clear and concise instructions on the internet. Every web page I visit, it seems to be someones personal way of doing it. Steps not mentioned, or instructions written for intermediate users. For example, Every video or piece of instruction i've watched on youtube regarding booting into the fast boot on the atrix 2, said something about holding volume up and power button upon booting and I would see something on the top of the screen. However that did not work, First I had to use the volume down and power button, then I would get to this fastboot screen where those recovery options werent available, from there I had to hold both volume buttons down and press the power button twice which would bring me to the recovery options screen. thats just one example, and even then for some reasons I didn't have all the recovery options the instructions spoke of... for example. Very annoying and frustrating. On a side note, is there anyone on this site who lives in the US that can unbrick my atrix 2? The guy who repair phones I took it to said theres a device for 250.00 bucks he's waiting to get that can unbrick any device. However he doesnt have the funds and had gotten laid off work. I am just having a hard time believing a simple soft user error could permanently damage my device forever and that as sophiscated as our technology has gotten there's absolutely no way to revive it.

I can't attest to the videos you saw, but for most androids this is the best site with the most info, I only suggest being sure how to root before you do it, and to understand how the method works as well. When your not understanding this is when bricks happen.
I know it can be lots of reading and lots of questions but in the long run its worth the time
As for the JTAG equipment there are many who have it and you can easily spend less than 250 on getting the proper stuff.
Every logicboard is different so maybe this machine he speaks of has a wide variety of cables that come with it, but he's still paying too much
Anyway, most people seem to charge 50$ or so to JTAG it back, if that's more than the phone is worth to you just sell it on eBay for parts

VzW Check for Root?

So I finally HAVE to replace my Note 2 via warranty. Power button sticks and will not boot.
At the end of the call to place the warranty order she says "any physical damage, water damage, or software alterations will result in a charge of $290". So I'm rooted and ROM'd and would normally just return to stock. BUT since the phone will not boot, I cannot do this. I realize if it won't boot for me it likely won't boot for Verizon.
My worry is that somehow they will in get it to boot. Do they still check for root? If so is this something I should be worried about? I cannot for the life of me get this thing to turn on it seems like I will not be able to return this to stock with out powering the phone on. Any insight is greatly appreciated.
I have done the warranty replacement game for a long time. Typical the people checking the phone are stupid and dump for checking for root. I havent spoken to or talked to one smart person that would check. Plus the people they hired to make sure the devices comes in probably isn't tech savvy. Just a worker trying to get paid.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 4
I agree with the above. I guarantee you the people who do the initial evaluation have a 'target' for the number of phones processed. But just the same return your phone to as stock looking as possible. Restore the launcher, use a stock wallpaper and/or boot-ani. Uninstall all apps you got from the store. And run your battery all the way down. It will continue to discharge even though it's off. This means it will need to charge for a few minutes before it will boot again.
And I've never noticed many posts (i can't recall even one) about phones being kicked back for being rooted/flashed.
But with that said isn't there some kind of flash 'counter' on the Note 2?

When I had my DROID X I went into a Verizon store to upgrade to an s3 and the guy who just got done telling me how he "mods" his gnex looked at my X and it was running cm7 themed out the wazoo and he said how plain the stock os is on the Motorola. Haha. So I don't think that 98% of the people who are either in store or at the warranty place have a clue what rooted is let alone able to tell if it is or not.

Yea I can't even get the phone to boot. Which I believe is due to the malfunctioning power button. But I'm still concerned verizon will find some way to get it booted. I'm going to see if I can boot via ADB this evening. Its been quite a while since messing around with ADB so I need to allow myself some time. Hopefully I can boot it and just Odin the factory image via ADB.
I should also try and clear the flash counter right? Does anyone have any tips or know-how on how to do that? I saw somewhere that there is an app. But should that be run before or after running the Odin stock image?
Thanks again guys and gals.
Hey gerg, the app is triangle away, and I would always try to return to stock if possible. I would use it before returning to stock as it needs root privileges. What a great learning experience (better to look at it that way then get angry trying to accomplish your goal). Keep us posted as we are all"rooting" for you....

Thanks man. Appreciate the positive vibes.
However it seems like I'm stuck. I can't for the life of me get this phone to boot, therefore I can restore the stock image via ADB, because ADB will not recognize the device since it is off. I've tried every trick out there, including the youtube video about pulling the charger and pulling/re-seating the battery as fast as possible. No dice.
I did however receive my warranty device today, and since I have ADB all set up and ready to go, I'll be rooting her and getting back to Trans-Neb ASAP, and of course I'll see you back in that thread.
Again, thanks for the help guys it is appreciated. I'm fairly sure I've tried harder and spent more time to get this phone to boot than Verizon will ( I hope at least). So if they can't get it to turn on, I don't see how they can tell its rooted
Mods can close this thread

[Q] ZTE Valet Root Possible?

So recently bought the straight Talk ZTE Valet, and have been searching for a root for this device if anyone knows of any or is interested on trying to develop a root exploit. I'm willing to dump any and all files, as well as try any and all rooting methods. If there is already a root im sorry for making a duplicate post.
I'm also looking for a root process that might work on the ZTE Valet now available on Tracfone. Help please!
Any luck?
I am also looking for a root solution for this phone. Either of you had any luck?
I have tried many methods that have worked on other devices, but no luck yet.
I'm also interested, mainly to move more apps, data. The phone does move some apps to a micro SD but not all.

The ZTE Valet Z665 has JB (4.1.1).
So far, I've tried Bin4ry (v32), framaroot (1.6.1), and poot (current version). None worked. In looking at superoneclick, I might not be understanding things very well but it appears to require a CWM image which does not (yet) exist - is that right?
What other methods appear to be worth a try and what have people tried on the ZTE Valet? Anyone aware of a source for the stock ROM? Are there other phones sufficiently similar where the CWM recovery would function on the Valet?
BTW, I just picked up my ZTE Valet at Fred Meyer where it was on sale for $49.99 (Tracfone, no contract). It's a great buy for that price. The sale is over but if interested, keep an eye out for the ads.
Like others, thanks for any ideas.

OK - tried superoneclick and z4root. These in addition to Bin4ry, framaroot, and poot didn't work. I'm a novice at this and am nervous trying some of these options that seem to lack proper pedigree and openness. Also, since I don't have a backup, a more invasive technique also worries me. I'm hoping one of you brave souls will try something out and hopefully give some of us some specifics on what you did to get this phone rooted. It would also be helpful to know what you did actually try (details) that didn't work. Thanks.
Update: Also just tried the adb method which didn't work for me http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224774[/adb root guide].
Although I took care in trying each of the methods mentioned above and repeated them, I could have screwed up. So ... maybe someone else can report their results just to be sure. I would not re-try z4root but the others don't seem too harmful and my phone still works.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224774

Tried all of the above also z4root really seemed to take a toll on the device a question I was wondering is if we had an almost identical phone would the cwm for that work?

I'm also interested, mainly to move more apps, data. The phone does move some apps to a micro SD but not all.

My ZTE turned out to be defective. Screen become unresponsive even after going to recovery, trying to wipe caches/reformatting and even finally attemting to restore to factory state. K-mart wouldn't accept it for an exchange since I bought it out of state. TracFone says they will'll replace it after I ship it to them on their dime. Up until this I liked the phone, except for sound clarity outgoing seemed poorer than mt LG290c from one test from a noisy place.
New phone received and checks out OK enuf to keep. WiFi OK at home but only fair with weak source. Doing this on my Hisense Sero 7 Pro which does better with less than strongest wifi. Screen slightly less crisp at lower brightness than original when it worked. Got 9x more min, text, MB than expected when transferred from old phone so definitely keeping.
