My tumblog for reviews and whatnot... - HTC EVO 3D

Just wanted to throw this out there...
I started a tumblr account to start reviewing ROMs, kernels, themes, etc...I like to think I can offer some pretty good insight. I will also post tutorials and such, but a lot of that won't pertain to you guys, as most of that is just taken (and credited) from here.
Along with the reviews, I also mirror whatever I'm reviewing so I can provide a direct download link (with ge.tt).
Check it out, tell me what you think...just started a few days ago, so don't hammer me too hard.

beginner - any help?

Hey guys,
I just got my mogul and am just starting to mess around with it. I am looking at custom roms, and would like to understand what they are doing, and eventually figure out how to make my own.
I am having trouble understanding how the rom file works. I downloaded one of dcd's clean rom to have a look at it, but i cant get past the 02_OS.nb file. what is this file, and how do I interpret it? Is there some program that i can use to extract it (if it even works like that)? I found the nbh extractor program on the wiki, but i cant find anything to do with the nb files on the wiki, or through the search function for that matter.
Thanks for any help,
Stuart
Sturatt,
What you are trying to do takes quite a bit of research and lots of getting stuck trying to figure things out. It sounds like you are very new to this and if that is the case I would definately do a lot more reading first. I got into making my own roms based on others roms within kitchens and it took me about a month or two to say I actually understand what I am doing and I still don't know how to do a lot of things.
Anyway if you don't want to spend tons of time messing with roms I would suggest getting a rom that has alrady been built by guys that have tons of knowledge such as DCD's roms, Custels roms, Colonels roms etc. The first two have postings on this forum, there are others at the ppcgeeks forum.
That being said if you do want to spend the time check out http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=10401 this is a discussion on what you are trying to do and there are some links to tutorials.

+1
Start with downloading and learning to install custom pre-made ROMs. Read all relevant material as links to other discussion boards are just about everywhere. With custom ROMs, you can find a base that you like and as you develop your ROM skills, you can take it to the next level by further tweaking a ROM to suit your needs.
Research, some trial & error, make plenty of back-ups and prepare to do some hard resetting!
Awesome, thanks guys. I realize it is going to be pretty tough, but i would rather learn it and understand what is going on, so no i dont mind reading a ton of stuff, i was just having trouble finding the stuff to read.
jjlwork and xweaponx thanks for the good advice. and If anyone else has some good articles/links for a beginner in this area, or anything interesting, please post away! In the mean time ill read that thread you posted, and look for more like it.
Thanks again,
Stuart
Let me know what kind of applications you are looking for or what you would like your phone to do and I will try to get you pointed in the right direction...

[Q] bluetooth pairing issue

Anyone out explain the issue with the bluetooth pairing on this thing. I've tried to pair a couple different phones but no cigar. I looked all over this forum to see if there was a fix but haven't seen a solution only other complaints. When I flash to a new ROM will that fix the poblem? If not how? What did you guys do?
Are you trying to use stock rom? Most people here have no idea how stock rom performs with most functions.
You might want to visit my page gtab for dummies.
Awesome website!
I checked out your web site earlier today from the reply you gave me last night on some other stuff. I can't tell you enough how appreciated this site is. I read every last word of each section and have a much better understanding. I would like to have a better understanding of each ROM. Like what would make me choose one over another? They have to be reasons to pick one over another. What does one do that the others don't? On your web site a brief description of each one could help us dummies know which one would serve our needs better. It's just an idea that could cut down on future questions. I love the site and will be visiting often. Thanks for all of that effort GoodIntentions!
Good idea.
Pros and cons
I thought about this a bit more. Maybe a list of the pros and cons for each ROM could help. If I knew the down side for each ROM it would definitely push me in one direction or another.
I agree with the Pros and Cons idea, I'm in the process of trying to work one up, but alas its seems my knowledge has become slightly outdated don't you hate that? Running CM7, I've got lots of cons but compared to what I had before I stuck with it. Switching to VeganTab I'll let you know how that goes but I'm thinking it may be a permanent switch.
I've never had any trouble pairing with my phone with the roms I tried. Make sure your gtab is visible.

what's the point of this?, all this information is available here , so why do you need to go somewhere else to read something that is here , I bet who ever made those pages probably got all the files here in xda , that wouldn't surprise me, plus you might want to add that all the things that are in those pages will increase the flash counter in the phone for those that are concerned with keeping their counter at 0.
All the info needed for flashing, rooting and kernels are in the dev section.

The point is that there are walk through videos for rooting, installing CWM, and flashing roms.
The site gives all credit to XDA developers. The site does not claim credit for any of the methods that they discuss.
Try visiting the site before blindly shooting it down and criticizing it.
Many people learn better by watching someone demonstrate rather then reading written directions.

Roloracer, I've had my note for 3 days and I'm planning to root my device any day now. All I need to do is catch up on some more reading. During my research I have found lots of info, not just here but other sites like rootgalaxynote.com, youtube, etc.
For a noob like me the more info I can get from different sources the better. Especially when it comes with "how to" videos/pictures. It really does make me a lot less hesitant and nervous about going through it the first time.
I have read many of your posts and found them to be quite helpful. For the noobs who haven't even heard of other sites like kevinallen4325 posted....believe me it is welcomed information.
Exactly. He does give credit to this site. The videos are helpful. I went through the majority of the threads here and was still confused about what to do. SEEING it helped. I and I so a post just the other day by someone who was confused about rooting and flashing, so I! Ade this thread to inform newcomers such as myself that there are other places and ways to learn about it. So keep am open mind.

I did visit the site and combed thru the links for different steps , and I wasn't blindly shooting it down, sorry if it came out that way but I guess it seemed pointless to me to point out a site with info that is already here. I guess it can be helpful for some .

I keep an open mind but after the years of modding phones here in xda , and doing tons of searching and reading in google/android police/android central/phandroid/android forums/rootzwiki and etc. I find myself trusting only one main source for any mobile development and that's XDA.
Sorry if I offended anyone.
There is a lot of great information on the site. But it can be a little bit overwhelming.
I can tear apart an engine and build it back up with my eyes closed, but for a phone I'm clueless and the step by step on the YouTube video helped me alot. Now I'm not as nervous to root or flash these babies...

I feel the same way. In the past year or so, it's gotten popular to post walkthrough videos on Youtube or the like. Some find them helpful, I do not. I seem to learn more through reading than watching, but my wife is just the opposite.
I'm a supporter of XDA and so I post all of my tutorials here (like in my sig). If I were looking for a few bucks, I would start a website with Google Adwords or similar advertising and them post the links here. Since I'm not in it for the money, I rely on people feeling generous enough to to click the "Donate" button above if they find that I'm helpful.
I'm not saying that the guy who posted the link or the other guy who wrote the tutorials are in it for the money, I'm just saying that it's the method that someone who is would use.
I'm from the jailbrake/iphone community and went through the same nervous jitters when I did my first jailbrake. I'm feeling the same again but this time knowing if I do as much reading I will get it done. Watching videos/pictures is a lot easier than reading through 18 page threads on the subject.
Haha I'm not in it for the money dude. Just trying to be helpful to others who are in the same boat as me. I switched to the note after 5 years with iphone so coming here and seeing all the possibilities really confused me.
its a good website for beginners
Well i want to say that there are lots of people who are new to rooting and flashing and unlocking....and thanks to people like rootgalaxynote.com that makes it easy by creating videos to help others...enjoy their phones.....seeing is believing

[Q] Question regarding rooting and roms

Hey guys, as you can see I am new to the whole wide world of android. I have had an iPhone since 2007 and recently dropped my iPhone 4 on the pavement which completely wrecked the screen. I seized the opportunity to buy an android. I got this s2 for 350 on eBay.
Anyway... I have absolutely no idea what I am getting into here. I have watched a ton of videos and still am really lost. (Sadly)
I have this s2 at 4.0.3 and am completely lost when it comes to how to flash a rom. I get we have to use ODIN, Kies and your rom. Am I missing anything else?
I want to use this. galaxys2root. com/att-galaxy-s2/aokp-ics-rom-for-att-galaxy-s2-sgh-i777-best-ics-rom/ << I cannot post links so its just a space in between the .com
I have seen videos where I have to root the thing first- or will this do it for me? I have also seen "roms" that are 400 MB in size but this one I like its 134... Am i missing any files or something? I have done searching but I end up more confused than I started. If someone could give me a push in the right direction that would be a great help!
This is the first phone I am actually confused with... I am sure it is easy, just not for a guy who has had an iPhone and developed for them since then... (I am co founder of whited00r )
Start with the links in the sticky. Be sure to read them all.
You said your phone is already on 4.0.3, which is Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS). That means it's not stock (aka factory settings, out of the box, etc). I'd personally suggest after reading all the links, returning to stock and starting over from scratch as it's the best way to ensure you don't have any problems, especially since you don't really know what the previous owner did to your phone. The links for returning to stock and for flashing custom ROMs are also in the sticky. Please don't read just these links, read at least all of the other links posted there. That's just the starting point mind you, you should probably do more reading after that on stuff in the posts that you don't understand. I know this will take a lot of time, but it's for everyone's benefit that you fully understand everything you do to your phone before you do it.
I'll even help you out with a couple other links I think may be useful which aren't in the sticky.
ROM vs. Kernel
Odex vs. Deodex
Please hit my thanks button if I helped you. Good luck and welcome to the forums!

From now on, don't watch any videos. They tend to be incomplete and usually outdated. Also, don't use any files or methods you find anywhere else besides XDA.
Like karate104 said, read the stickies at the top of the forums; they will tell you everything you need to know in detail. Read this one in particular. It has links to a lot of useful guides.
you also need to be wary of what you read and watch on gs2root. com
when i first started i used the rooting technique with the kernel from there and ended up with no wifi and ended up having to flash entropy's daily driver to recover
as the guys above said, read the stickies here and go over it a million times until it makes sense
flashing can open up loads of features, but you can very easily make your phone unusable (easily fixable once not hard bricked) but better avoid the trouble than finding a fix
Another victim on galaxys2root!
Sigh!

[Q] Looking for a specific theme

Hello everyone! Heard a lot of good things about this site so thought I'd sign up and give it a go. Been having lots of issues with ICS (all three stock releases for my phone - E4GT). I'm fine with running (and actually prefer) EL29 anyway. I would, however, like to give my phone a fresher theme.
I found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1323763 and thought it was beautiful, plus everyone raved about it. But...the Download link is dead. The last page of the (closed) Thread suggested anyone looking for it see if someone could email it or link a working Download mirror. I tried looking everywhere, but can't seem to find any active mirrors, so would someone be kind enough to point me in the right direction?
Thanks so much and sorry if it's posted somewhere and I missed it!
