[Q]Is this the right tablet for me? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Currently, I have the iPad 2. I do, however, miss android and its customizable aspect. So I was offered by someone to swap my iPad 2 for his Galaxy Tab 10.1
Before swapping, I did went to the nearest Bestbuy to see what the hype was all about. I am pretty disappointed with the browser and the onscreen keyboard. Typing was a pain, and in conjunction with Google's autocomplete feature, it was a nightmare.
By running Quadrant Standard twice, I got scores ranging from 1550-1700. Which was pretty horrid for a dual core processor. I noticed that the fps on each test (2d-3d) range from 15fps-30fps. I have the Samsung Fascinate as my smartphone, and it goes up to 56fps during the graphic tests.
The model that I played around with was not running TouchWiz or maybe it is not updated.
I am mostly concerned on how the device runs after third-party launchers, root, themes, etc. are installed.
Is the interface still sluggish? is the onscreen keyboard still horrid?

I'm currently running stock Touchwiz and yeah it has its glitches, but it's not horrid. I also own the iPad 2 and it has its glitches once in a while too! I like both devices! I could do more on my GTab of course, but I get more smoothness on my iPad 2. They each have pros and cons! Lol
If you don't like the stock keyboard on the GTab you can always change it! I like to use Swiftkey on mine.

Quadrant doesn't get along with stock HC 3.1, so the score is pretty meaningless. On literally every other rom (HC 3.0, TouchWiz etc) normal Quadrant scores should be in the mid 2k's.
The typing lag and wonky cursor that was a problem when typing in web forms has been fixed in the TouchWiz update.
While I've seen some people complain about lag with the launcher, I've never experienced it myself. Regardless, there are optimized launchers available if you flash a deodexed TW rom, and launchers like ADW also work fine on the tablet.

Thanks for the response guys.
I wish I can have both. Since playing around with it from a display model was really pointless since I can't do much about it in regards to flashing rom/updates/etc.
If you were on my shoes, trade or not to trade.

Hey, if you miss customization, then go for the tab, I say. When I used the ipad1 before, staring at those generic iOS homescreen with its sterile grid, indistinguishable icons, horrid folders, lack of widgets was pretty depressing, to me at least.
Yes, you'll run into some glitches. But custom kernels, roms, apps can remedy many of them, while Honeycomb and Touchwiz has already been getting better over time. That GT10.1 seems to have attracted some awesome devs is a plus too.
Yes, you may miss some favorite apps. But most likely there will be similar ones for android, or they will some make there appearance as tablets gain market share. There are yet no ipad-only killer apps that make it too much of a pain to cross over to the tab.
And on top of having your very own customized tab, with docks, apps, widgets individualized and optimized for your own self, imho, the tab even outshines the ipad in terms of
Better for watching or streaming movies (16:9 ratio, play more codex, a gorgeous screen),
Better web-browsing (flash of course, as well as higher pixel count to take in the whole website),
and arguably better e-reading (TW ebook app is quite versatile and easy on the eye, and I enjoy the landscape two-page mode reading which utilizes the widescreen)
as well as better sound (you can get voodoo control with pershoots kernel and bluetooth is amazing)
All which I think are the mainstays of a tablet experience.
Maybe note taking is another, in which the HTC Flyer may be better, but then with swype or thumbkeyboard, or an optional bluetooth keyboard, note taking is at least just as good as the ipad2.
And you won't be sacrificing the sleek form factor (GT10.1 is lighter and thinner, marginally, than ipad2) as you would have to if you went for a different android tab (at least until the Sony S1 comes out, which we'll have to see to be sure).
So, that's my take on why if I was in your shoes, I'd go for the Galaxy Tab 10.1

I should add, to me, whereas the ipad was mainly a portrait mode experience, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is mainly a landscape mode experience. Should consider and be comfortable of that too - especially in terms of customizing your tablet homescreens. It's one thing that makes it quite different and more exciting than customizing a smartphone.

As with any android vs apple comparison, I think it kind of comes down to how much you like tweaking and customizing, while having to occasionally find workarounds and deal with a still developing ecosystem. If you'd rather not bother with any of that then stick with the iPad.

GTab 10.1 with Honeycomb has a lot of potential. I will probably keep my iPad 2 and snag one off office depot with a 100$ coupon for any tablet.
I've decided to keep the iPad 2 due to the fact that, unfortunately, bought a ton of productivity apps from the app store already. Furthermore, by keeping it and getting GTab 10.1, I can enjoy both worlds. Just need to feed the hungry android inside me.
Love android os. Hope that ice cream sandwich is as tasty as it looks.
Thanks a lot guys for the info. Really helped me decide wether I should get one or not.

I have both. Bought the Galaxy Tab and got the iPad 2 through my school. One thing the iPad has going for itself is that it's a really smooth experience. What it does, it does well. Unfortunately, that's all it does though. There's just nothing else to do with it besides running apps and browsing the internet. If you need something to satisfy your inner geek I would definitely go with the Tab.
From your post I take that you already know all this and are mainly wondering how the Tab holds up performance wise. It's great! I'm running the latest Starburst with pershoots kernel overclocked to 1.4 and the sucker flies. It beats the iPad on almost every webpage rendering test I've put the two to. Google maps is light years ahead of the iPad version and the browsing experience is great since the TouchWiz update.
In the end it's a personal decision. Lets just say that MY iPad is collecting dust on the shelf.

[Q] Galaxy Tab vs iPad 2?

Hey Fellas,
I'm currently an iPad 2 user. I have a Galaxy S phone (which I love) and won't give it up for an iPhone. I was considering buying a Tab... but I didn't have much of a choice when the iPad 2 came out.
Today I ran into a Galaxy Tab 10.1 (it was AMAZING) and I'm thinking about returning my iPad 2.
Would anyone recommend this?
I love the Android OS. I chose the iOS because of the amount of useful school/work apps it has. [IT field].
Another question is... does anyone here own both [or tried both the iPad 2 AND the G Tab]? I have to say that the iPad 2 keyboard was much smoother than the Galaxy Tab.
I tried it quick.. I didn't have much time to play with it. I thought the keyboard wasn't as fast.
How about school/IT apps?
Thanks in advance!
My mom have the iPad 2 and I love Honeycomb but when compared to iOS its missing a whole lot, especially on apps.
Honeycomb is a new OS for tablets and I see it growing in the future and apps are slowly being ported and optimized for Honeycomb tablets. iOS has been in the market for a while and honeycomb has got some catching up to do.
Buy a tablet for what it is now instead of expecting something out of it and just getting frustrated waiting for an app. I bout a zune HD thinking it will go toe to toe with the iPod touch but was just disappointed and ended up selling it and buying the iPod touch.

Other than the infamous lag when typing in forums, keyboard speed is fine in every application I've used so far. For some the forum thing is a big deal, and I've worked around it for now by using a remote desktop app if I really feel the need to post an essay using the tab, but obviously that isn't ideal.
As for the keyboard itself, there are plenty to choose from. Swiftkey, Thumb Keyboard and Swype are all excellent alternatives if you don't like the stock HC keyboard or the Samsung one.
The tab comes with Quick Office pre-installed and that will do the job if you want to take notes and read documents. There are about a half dozen office suites and each have their pro's and con's, if you want to learn more about them there is a good comparison thread over at the Asus Transformer forums. They all have a ways to go though before they're suitable for real work with documents however.
For IT, I imagine apps like LogMeIn, Wyse Pocket Cloud, Overlook Fing, andSMB, SharesFinder, ASProxy, Connect Bot, etc would be useful.
to give you an honest answer stick with the Ipad. Everyone on here will try to give you a reach around about why the TAB is so great. But quite frankly in its current state its not. I'm typing this on my tab right now and am getting pissed that my words are showing up well after I press the keys. There are NO USEFULL ANDROID TABLET APPS available at this time. You want proof. Go to the marketplace and see if you van even tell the difference between what is a table app and what isn't. Some tablet apps even have disclaimers stating they aren't even compatible with the GT yet. I purchased my tab because I'm believing in the Modding community will one day provide me with the goodies I crave for use on what is a very (hardware) capable device. But if you want somethingthat just works right now... get an IPAD.
I am still so much on the fence about the GT 10.1 I have a hard time even trying to formulate a reply to this. As I think I go back and forth every 5 minutes.
GT 10.1
+ Android is open, open file system, third party app stores/markets.
+ Wide screen display, higher resolution, and stereo speakers great for videos.
+ Highly customizable with widgets.
+ XDA community usually does great job with custom ROMs.
+ Google apps and Amazon CloudDrive and App Store are great.
- Android 3 is a rush job, screen response not great (not bad either), keyboard lag.
- App crashes and random reboots rare, but happen more than they should.
- Tablet app select still small, and Android app versions sometimes inferior to iOS.
- Uncertainty when Samsung might push the Android 4.0 update, they've been ver slow in the past.
- No Netflix
iPad 2 (I own an iPad 1, so this is mostly about iOS)
+ Over a year head start in tablets, lots of quality apps.
+ iOS versions of some apps are better, Tweetdeck, Tune In Radio, Taptu, etc.
+ Netflix, Hulu Plus (don't care for Hulu, but really miss Netflix on my GT 10.1)
+ iOS very responsive and smooth.
+ Square screen ratio nice for browsing, ebooks.
+ Apple makes software and hardware, so dependable updates.
- No file system access, must use iTunes (usually) to transfer files.
- Google, YouTube apps sucks on iOS.
- No third party application markets (no good Jailbreak for iPad 2, so no Cydia).
- Lower res display, 512MB of RAM.

Hello!
My friend owns the iPad/iPad 2 and I use them regularly when I'm at his house as he has multiple. I own a Galaxy Tab 7" and 10.1 myself. Here's my personal opinion:
The iPad had a significant build quality difference between it and the 7" Tab. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 corrects this, but it's still very difficult to beat a uniform metal structure versus a plastic one. This will boil down to whether you prefer a higher build quality, or a lighter device. The 10.1 is way lighter, the iPad 2's build quality is better.
As far as applications go... iOS tablet-centric apps blows Android out of the water. There is no denying this. You can still get any application you need on both platforms, but the higher resolution ones on the iPad are way more numerous. Here's to hoping this changes soon for Honeycomb.
As far as operating systems go... Honeycomb is ages beyond iOS in terms of a more desktop-like feel on a Tablet and less of a phone-like feel. iOS 5 does little to correct this. You will find the OS itself much more pleasant on a Honeycomb tablet.
Hardware: The processor in the iPad 2 is fast. The processor in the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is fast. I don't see any speed differences between the two, except for the browser. The lead Google put in Android 2.2 shows heavily with the UI optimized for Tablets. Also, the Tegra 2 processor is the first processor I can say having Flash is a definitive advantage. I can stream HD videos from Flash sources on the web (ABC, Crunchyroll, etc) with very little to no stuttering. Props to NVidia here. I could probably do a video for you, if you were interested.
The back camera on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is far superior, though I don't think you'll be using it very often when cameras on phones are smaller and easier to use. Just my opinion.
Last but not least: I really dislike the iPad (iOS 4) and Google's default keyboard on Tablets. They are extremely hard to use while handling the device. I use Swiftkey Tablet X on my 7" and 10.1" Tab and LOVE it. If you keep your iPad 2 I really suggest you get iOS 5 on it to take advantage of the split keyboard effect. It makes typing far easier. If you do go back and get a Google-based Tab, drop their crappy keyboard and get Swiftkey X. It's in beta - I can send you the apk if you do end up going that route. Just PM me.
[Edit] Quick edit after reading Ravynmagi's post - not having Netflix is a HUGE HUGE bummer. There's no word on it coming to Honeycomb either, so don't hold your breath[/Edit]
I've had both. the iTampon 2 is riddled with screen problems. I wouldn't pay 500 bucks for it. It does have more apps... but let's be honest..... how many apps do you really need?

Check the support forums at the Apple site. Sure hasn't.
I don't like Ipads. It feels like you are stuck into the app drawer forever.
Sure, there are tons of apps for tablets but everything else is below 10.1 standards.
It starts with the homescreen, over to multitasking abilities and ends in hardware.
And a 4:3 screen is a no go. Every media is made for 16:9 or 16:10, have fun watching movies on that. Ipad2 feels like an ancient TV.
And web without flash? Seriously? That also means no browser games which all are high resolution and made for PC !
Ipads are just for the fancy glamour aspect. The apps look better, for example ebook readers are nicer animated. But I am a purist, I don't want animations around my text, I want a nice and huge display. Why buy 10.1 if half of your screen is used up by showing virutal pages?
The fact that Honeycomb doesn't have many good apps and Tegra 2 seems pretty poor overall (poor video/codec playing, maybe be an OS issue though) I would get an iPad. It will just be a smoother/better experience.
When people say that the IPad has more apps, I kind of laugh at this.....
Its the quality of the apps, not the number of them. If Android has the apps that I want and are of good quality, than I am happy.
I was debating between these 2 devices and in the end I chose the IPAD2. I really wanted to go with Android, but right now its just not ready for "primetime" just yet. I may revisit this when ICS comes out and the Android Tablets and Apps have become more mature. Much like when Android came out, you are goign to ahve to do a lot fo work to get it to do what you want to do. I think the GTAB has great potential, its the OS that holds it back. App conversion\creation has been very slow so far, which is another drawback.
As others have said though, take account of what you want to do with the tablet and what apps you will use. Then go through both tablets and see what will suit your needs. You cant go wrong with either as both have their negative and positive attributes. Whichever is going to fit your needs the best is the one to get, everyone has different needs and wants, so everyone will have a differing opinion.
I can say though that I have not been disappointed with my decision. I still come here and lurk to see what the current state of the GTAB is though as it still sparks my interest and I want it to succeed.

My experience is quality has usually been lower on the Android side. Either the Android version has fewer features or is less stable or not even compatible with your device. Fragmentation is a real ***** on Android right now and quality is suffering because of it.
I really don't see an argument for Android having an advantage on the app side. That's going to be the iPad's strong point for quite some time.
But I do agree, plenty of people can find good quality apps that suit their needs and be completely happy.
honeycomb really suck balls! i have to have 3 different browsers installed to do what a normal browser does
firefox to download stuff (if u disagree, try using some other browser to download from filesonic/hotfiles)
skyfire to view flash sites
and the ever temperamental stock browser
why am i able to do the above with any browser froyo/gingerbread but not honeycomb?
typing in username/password is a nightmare, tap a key --> wait for the character to appear --> type the next key.. honestly if u want to try out android, get yourself an android phone, avoid honeycomb tablets for the time being

ipad has a lot of useful and quality apps compared to the less than a hundred apps that honeycomb offer.
I'm not talking about games because the tablet optimized games that honeycomb/tegra have are awesome but when it comes to apps for specific tasks they have very limited selection and not a lot of them are comparable to the ipad app counterpart.
I'm talking about finance apps like iReconcile for iPad and portfolio apps for photographers.
I have not seen one portfolio app for honeycomb and ipad have a color calibration app made by datacolor called SpyderGallery but non existent on the honeycomb.
I'm just saying that honeycomb might be good for someone that want to do basic stuff on their tablet but if you want a task specific app, the ipad has them and honeycomb desn't have them but doesn't mean they're not going to have them in the future.
I think that we're going to see a lot of apps ported to honeycomb by the end of the year.

I've played with the ipad & currently own a GT 10.1. For me (& I think Rayvnmagi summed it all up nicely), the two greatest advantages of Honeycomb are media (ability to play Flash & higher resolution video) and the mod-ability (I just bought an Epic 4G -- $30 on Amazon! -- and I haven't stopped playing with ROMs since; something I could never do with my iphone 3GS).
Yes, the apps are decidedly not there. Yes, the keyboard lag is awful when typing in forums, etc. I'm willing to put up with that for now because I know two things: 1) the fellas here at xda are awesome & will most likely come out with a fix in the near future & 2) Google handed out GT 10.1 developer editions to everyone at its developer conference. That can only be a good thing in terms of app development for the GT 10.1.
All that being said, I actually recommended my dad (NOT a techie) get an ipad 2. He's not as tech-savvy, and he's of the mindset that things should just work. The ipad has established itself as a very stable platform that works (usually) without a hitch & I have a feeling if he'd gotten a GT 10.1, he would have had several headaches & never used it.
So, I feel like in the end, it really depends on your usage preference--do you want an established tech with a little bit lower specs or do you want the newer tech with more bugs but better specs?
My problem with the tab right now has nothing to do with apps etc etc. That stuff will eventually come, just a little time.
My problem is with lag, video playback issues, and the fact that samsung does not like to update their products to push you to buy new ones. Even if google fixes all the issues currently with the tablets, there is no guarantee samsung will give us that update.
Samsung's flagship phone (galaxy s) has yet to get the ota froyo update. If you send your phone back in for a warranty repair, yes you will receive a refurbed one with froyo or you can get it through kies if you are aware of it's existence. Yet the new $70 samsung exhibit is just a replay of the vibrant but with gingerbread!
I don't know about the other manufacturers, but I don't expect the tab to improve much more than it has now. There will most likely be a new tablet from samsung in the fall to winter season sporting icecream sandwich...if that happens, forget updates!

The problem with the iPad is that once you buy into the Apple infrastructure if you buy a decent quality of apps you're locked into them forever unless you want to start over again. Personally I love the flexibility of Android and will never go back to having an iPhone (which I used to have).
When Exchange didn't work with my corporate server with my iPhone I was out of luck. With my Droid X I had the same problem but was able to download Touchdown which works fine. To me, that flexibility makes it more worthwhile to stay with Android and lose out on the over abundance of "fart apps" in the Apple app store.

Why Do You Like The Prime More Then The Ipad2?

for me its a toss up between the ipad 2 and the prime. I wanted to know why the people here are after the prime instead of going for the ipad 2.
keep in mind, i don't know what androids like at all, so please answer in more detail then: I like android more then apple.
people talk about freedom of the device, whats that about? i can download stuff using something like utorrent? could i install games not made for android? i wish i knew more about this thing, but im bad at research.
Please don't tell me why you like the ipad2 better, i just want to know stuff about the prime that the ipad2 is missing for you.
Well for one, its hasn't been released yet, so for most people its a competition between old technology and new technology. Plus you are on an Android/Palm/Windows dominated forum.
As for why people prefer Android to Apple, there are many reasons. For a majority of the people on XDA it has to do with the ability to completely customize the entire operating system, something that apple cant do (either by restrictions or a less dedicated mod community), anything from modifications to stock or a completely independent new rom, thats what XDA does.
For many people they don't trust Apple for the way they trick customers and do buisness. There are hundreds of reason, too many for me (one person to list) as for why people prefer Android to IOS.
In addition to Android being a more open system than iOS, it also seems to be getting updated at a quicker pace. If (or when) your device gets outdated, you will always have a dedicated community keeping your device up to date for a long time.
Also, the connectivity on a device like Prime seems to be above and beyond what you get on the iPad.
You have Micro HDMI out (need dongle for iPad), Micro SD card slot for expanding memory (not available on iPad), option to get a keyboard dock w/extra battery (only wireless option that drains battery for iPad)
With the dock you get even more connectivity with a regular USB port (needs another dongle on iPad) that supports regular mouse/keyboard. Also supports a USB hub should you want to use your regular PC Mouse/Keyboard.
I might be biased since I have only played with iPads and never owned one. Did sell my Galaxy Tab 10.1 and pre ordered the Prime though.
Just my $0.02
IMHO, it's because the Transformer Prime is a true convergence device. Apple could have easily made something like it, but to protect their profits, they kept the iPad and MBA separate (i.e. crippled) instead.
If the iPad could do everything a Mac can do, Apple would stand to lose a lot of profits. So that's why the smart money is on the Transformer Prime.

great answer, this makes me lean towards the prime.
Truth be told, im MOST likely getting the prime, i just would like to hear good things about it.
Obvisously it being the tube first quad core tablet and being 32gb at the same price point as the 16gb iPad 2 are huge reasons. Of course with the dock the price is 650 but I believe it's a worthy addition. It's also thinner, has way more connectivity, I.e. hdmi out, SD slot, etc. The promise of having ICS (Google's new OS) before the end of the year.
You can't really tinker with ios and I don't actually consider it an OS anyways. Just homescreen after homescreen of start menus. Ios is boring and just overall not an enjoyable experience. Everytime I use my EVO 3d I still get excited about all the stuff i can do with it. Google is just more enticing in my opinion.
If you really are bad at research you might consider sticking with the iPad2. I think of Android as the tinkerer's OS. I have IT degrees and certs and still have to research pretty hard to keep up with all the work that the great devs here do. It's not the simplest platform out there. However if you want to get better at researching this stuff and like learning about your tech from the inside out I say get the Prime and watch these forums closely.
The biggest upside to this tablet over any other tablet for me though is the keyboard dock. It's an ingenious innovation in tablets that is sure to be copied at some point. A peripheral that actually adds battery life while providing not one, not two, but three or more excellent options (usb, sd, keys) to the device is pretty amazing.

im sure ill be able to get the most of it.
Pretty simple. its not Apple. that is the biggest selling point
I considered the iPad2 for about 10seconds after the whole Amazon cancelling orders fiasco, but then I realize how boring and expensive the thing really is. 64GB model is 120$ more expensive, no option for a decent keyboard dock, gated community iOS crap.... BUT they do have some apps I do want that aren't out YET for Android. I don't know, I want a tablet with functionality, customizability, and with next year's tech in it. Honestly, after ICS I probably won't bother rooting and flashing the device... But I still prefer an Android. It's a fun OS, ICS looks amazing, and if I ever decide to root and flash, I can! The iPad doesn't really offer that much. It hardly lets you do decent word processing last I checked.
I mean, since Dropbox and all that stuff, syncing docs between devices is a joke, I remember the iPad1 being kinda lame in that respect (plus it was using that Apple word processing suite... ick). I don't know... and the whole Gamestop getting behind Tegra 3 is really awesome. Gives me hope that Android might get more exposure, get more popular, and therefore more devs actually working to release games on the platform rather than iOS only.
I just think it's kinda lame that Asus didn't have enough stock to go around to release these things before Christmas... Regardless, I'm staying away from iPads THIS year and getting the Prime.
I own an iPad2 for about half a year.
And I am an Android user, my phone is HTC Desire, Nexus S, and pre-ordered Galaxy Nexus.
First of all, please excuse my english language
Previously, I was waiting a good decent Android tablet, good hardware profile, good battery life, screen is nice, etc.
My eyes was on Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, but Honeycomb 3.0 at that time really put me off with issues like "slow text input on web page". And the fact that it came very late in Europe (even barred in Germany!).
ASUS Transformer 1 just does not cut it, I don't like the hardware profile, thick and heavier than GTab 10.1. Sure, I use iPad2 as reference because as Android user, I always want a device that is better (or on par) than fruit device!
I could wait and wait, but nevertheless my wife asked me a tablet and I thought iPad2 will suit her (as non power user).
After half a year using this iPad2, here are some things that I don't like:
1. The virtual keyboard.
Why on earth, Apple created virtual keyboard like that? No lower case indication, no easy way to output numeric chars (on Android, I can long press), and way too much click to output []+ for example (I hate this when I create a post in XDA starting with "[Q]" ... or typing "Google+"). Really, I wish I can change the keyboard. Alas, I cant.
With Android, you can change it the way you want. There are many good virtual keyboard apps!
2. Non-unified file system
All right, in iOS, there is no unified file system. Each app has its own storage space. That's make a bit difficult to manage files. Granted, I always want to use my device as storage for my files. There is nothing wrong with it, right?
If I got a file attachment in iOS, how do I download it? How can I access that file from other apps?
3. Sharing thing
On Android, if I have something, like a file, an app, or anything, I can easily share it with other users via intuitive user interface, using WhatsApp, Facebook, Google+, email, what not.
I simply cannot do this with iOS. You can say, this is not a big deal, but that's disadvantage.
Right now, I always go back to my Nexus S to share things!
4. Boring home screen
Yeah, this is obvious. There is nothing you can do with iOS home screen. Icons icons and loads of icons. I want "direct information" right in the home screen, like weather, news, system status, etc. You cannot have that, you must access each app manually to get that information. With Android, you can have widget, simple.
------------
So, now, with the Prime, I think I found the right tablet for me I still hate Honeycomb, but it will get ICS.
The hardware profile is much better than the iPad2, with SD card slot, HDMI, and decent keyboard dock. While still maintaining thinner and lighter profile.
Why shouldn't I get one?
People complaint about "smoothness" and "fluidity" of the scrolling / home screen. Yes, most probably iOS is better on this, but ICS is not that bad! I don't think you will experience choppy and laggy user interface or such. I will opt for all those advantages on Android rather than just smoothness.
Apps, apps and apps. Yeah, this is personal. So far, I am satisfied with all apps that I can get from Android. ... Of course, except Facebook app! But, I think I can use the web browser
Hope this helps
Here's what can be done on android that can't on iOS. (expect maybe by jailbreaking but it become way less convenient than your usual iOS expérience)
_ widget : widget are great on tablet where you have big screen. Lot of usefull and funny stuff can be had to the homescreens.
_lives wallpapers : many cool looking or even usefull interactive wallpapers.
_ acces to files. You can dl torrents and every thing else easily.
_ google stuff intégration. Google is the best on the internet. Android is where google shine the most.
_ change every thing in the os. Homescreens, keyboard, everything can be change by a single tap in the market.
_ custom rom. Developpers can build thing that completly change the way android works.
_ geeky funny stuff like easter egg
_flash
Overall, with Android you'll never find yourself unable to do something that a low power device should be able to do (don't expect to do a CG short movie on your tablet...) And the experience of the OS itself (outside of each individual apps) is way less boring than iOS.

smoothness is a big deal for me, but i had the ipad, this thing MUST... MUUUSST!! be faster then my ipad1?! don't tell me its less fluid then that. I don't know if i could handle it.
You know, iOS will always better on that smoothness/fluidity of the user interface, even with ICS.
You know why?
Because iOS does a lot less than Android.
Really, a lot less ...
For example, see the above post from user kokusho. Those are just examples what you cannot do on iOS.
But, have you seen ICS on Galaxy Nexus and some bit demos on the Prime?
I don't think that is not acceptable for smoothness.
ICS is super fast, but at certain times, you might "perceive" some kind of lag. For example, going back/to home screen from apps drawer, or long SMS list. But yeah, that does not mean it is not fast nor smooth. It is smooth, but it is not the same like iOS.
As I said, I won't bother that much. There are a lot more advantages on Android that make life easier for using tablet. And it will get better.
Really, to answer your question on this thread is "very simple":
Why Do You Like The Prime More Then The Ipad2?
Because The Prime with Android can do much more than iPad2 ...
Here, if you want to know more about Android smoothness/fluidity:

keep in mind, i don't know what androids like at all, so please answer in more detail then: I like android more then apple.
people talk about freedom of the device, whats that about? i can download stuff using something like utorrent? could i install games not made for android? i wish i knew more about this thing, but im bad at research.
Please don't tell me why you like the ipad2 better, i just want to know stuff about the prime that the ipad2 is missing for you.

Well I had Asus Transformer one and currently I have Ipad 2. Here is why Ipad 2 is a piece of crap:
CONS OF IPADS:
1. Ipads have much worse resolution. On paper it you might think it is not that bad. But when I sold TF (just to wait and buy Prime of course) and bought Ipad2 (a temporary solution) I could not believe my eyes. Asus have a great display. Everything is sharp and clear. Ipads resolution is not good enough. While playing games the difference is almost invisible. But when browsing internet, reading books and so on the difference is huge. On Ipad the text is not clear, not sharp. My eyes have hard work to make. Believe me or not. Ipads displays sucks.
2. Ipads do not have external slots lile SD slot, USB slot. If you want to copy to Ipad mp3 or mkv you have to use stupid Itunes. Also if you copy some files into Ipad they are only seen by a certain application you are going to use to play those files. While in Android tablets like great TF you copy files and you can access to the by any of application on tablet. Full freedom.
3. You cannot customize desktop on Ipad. After using TF I felt a huge discomfort using Ipad. I could do nothing with the screen. No widgets, no nothing...
4. No flash on ipad. I have few favorite WWW which demands flash. They worked on TF properly but on Ipad.... they do not. lol....
PROS OF IPAD
1. More GAMES. Yes games only. So what you have plenty of apps. But not having the ability of widgets (like weather) those apps are not so attractive like those for Android. But comparing Android games with Ipad games I must say that there are only few more (for me) games on iOS than on Android. I thought there will be much more great games on iOS. Another disappointment.
As for me Ipads are just toys. More like consoles. A stuff for kids mostly. For people not demanding having a PC compared possibilities.
If you want to have useless toy - take Ipad. Want to have small PC - take Android - Asus PRIME! YEACH! AMEN!
iPad 2 pros:
Software availability - but this will change, development is increasingly Android + iOS rather than iOS first, Android port maybe some day.
Raw GPU power - potential for more graphically-impressive games, though Tegra 3's GPU is still good and may win out on more complex scenes?
Ease of use - there's not much to the OS, so not much to go wrong.
3G version available - would have to use another device (or maybe dongle) with the Prime.
Transformer Prime pros:
Customisability - you can change anything on Android, Apple want to control the experience.
No walled garden - free to install any application without Google's permission, no need to jailbreak.
Screen - higher resolution and brighter.
Raw CPU power - the other side of the coin, this gives the Prime more potential than the iPad 2 in other areas.
Dock option - makes the Prime into an Android netbook and extends battery life. iPad alternative is not integrated, drains the battery, and does not have a trackpad.
Expansion - microSDHC card slot and micro-HDMI port on tablet, and SD card slot and USB 2.0 port on dock. iPad requires additional dongles.
Camera - superior camera. Though I'm not sure what you're doing with a camera on a tablet.
For some (most?) people, the ease of use and application availability points mean the iPad 2 wins out. But for most of us here, being able to change stuff and use more of the potential of the device means that the Prime is the winner.

Truth, iOS gets very boring. I was using an iPhone 4 for maybe 2 months and there was something about it that I didn't like. Now I figured it out once I went back to my X2. iOS is just so plain and linear, it holds your hand on everything. Even when you're installing a jailbreak mod, you just press "Install" and sit back unlike on Android where you have boot into recovery yourself and point it to whatever it is you want to flash.
I found my Transformer better than the iPad, so I'm sure I'll find the Prime better as well
I look at the iPad as dummy-proof. Too simplistic for my needs, and kind of boring, just having grids of icons. I also like to tweak things, and even without rooting, Android has a a lot of personalizations that I cannot do with iOS.
Apple innovates, and repackages well, and they know how to make things look cool that have been around for a long time (brilliant marketing). However, I just do not like the 'better than you' smugness that is too often associated with folks who pony up the Apple premium prices.
I had an iPad and currently have an iPad2 for work, but I want what I want, and I just feel that Apple doesn't allow me to do that.
I had a Xoom, which was okay, but seemed first gen. My hacked Nook Color is more useful to me, and I may keep it to read books on (I read lots of books). The Xoom is quite a bit heavier than the Prime, and I found that reading for long periods was a chore on the Xoom in comparison to the compact and lighter Nook Color
I'm hoping that the Prime is the "baby bear" (just right) to the "papa bear" Xoom (too big and cumbersome) and "mama bear" Nook color (a bit too small). ..and don't ask me how I thought of that analogy.. I was just thinking of comparing three things

Wouldn't The Prime be more like Goldilocks? The one all the bears are after?
Seriously though, the widgets are the thing that really sets Android apart IMHO. On my phone (Dell Streak 5), every person I've shown it to is just amazed.
I have the weather, lists (groceries and to-do), music player, RSS feed and calendar widgets. That at-a-glance information means I can get out the door quicker in the morning and not be late! And it's my book/manga reader too.

[Q] iPad 2 owners that also have Prime feedback

I would like to start off by saying I tried a search and did not find conclusive results to my question so apologies if I missed a thread on this.
I would also like to say I am not a Apple fan by nature. I was a preorder on the Andoid G1 if that serves any background on me.
So my dilemma.. What sold me on the iPad 2 was trying out a iPad 1 early last year and took to the speed, performance, form etc. So learning the ipad 2 was down the road I waited a few months and walked into the store on launch day and picked one up.
My dilemma - I have not been very happy with Apple in general for many reasons which I won't get into but seeking real feedback if the Prime would compare to the iPad 2 for owners of both.
In desperation to have an Andriod device I recently purchased the Galaxy Tab 10.1 only to be disappointed and returned it. It is nice, don't get me wrong but pales in comparison to the speed in which I am used to. At least out of the box. I am not looking to mod my tablet (already do that with my Evo and Photon).
So, is there anyone here that can provide real feedback to owning both units? I really want to go Android but don't want to feel like I am sacrificing on anything. The browser tests I did with the Galaxy vs the iPad were significant enough for me to be a deal breaker. I know I am giving up flash on the iPad but in reality most of what I do doesn't require it. I would just prefer a Android device that has similar speed in browsing and responsiveness, screen etc..
Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post..
my prime should be here tomorrow so ill post up my results for you. also keep in mind that the ipad 3 should be coming out sometime this year. but you said you wanted an android device so that may not matter.
Thanks.. I did hear the iPad 3 is coming out but it seems like a rumor at the moment? Like you mentioned though I am really looking to get away from the limitations Apple has which is my drive. The IOS 5 update took away my direct print function from email and Safari from an app I paid for which i was told from the developer was intentional and there is nothing they can do about it. I am not unhappy enough with the iPad to just make a change for the sake of change as it does work nice for most of what I do. I wish this was in store to try it out first but I can be patient.

Ya thats the way i feel, if the prime doesnt preform well ill send it back and wait to see if the ics update fixes it. but have you looked at the galaxy tab 7.7? i heard thats supposed to be pretty nice and if you already have an ipad 2 maybe the smaller size would be good for you. Either way i think you have to wait for the ics update to get a real comparison.
I did see something about the 7.7 but thought it was only avail through Verizon with LTE? The size is actually probably not bad and doable.
I recently picked up an ipad 2 while I wait for a replacement Prime to come in. I am by no means an apple guy, in fact I don't like a lot of things they do and have been an android user for years. That being said, I am very quite impressed with it so far. Very fluid ui and browser (great flash support using Photon browser). Games, are significantly ahead of android in quantity and quality. Software in general is polished and compatibility is excellent.
Now, unlike prime with storage and hdmi... With ipad you pay for everything. Hdmi, eternal storage etc. External output is Meh, requires google tv for most things. Peripherals in general are expensive, but will be compatible with most if not all apple things.
That's all I can think of right now... Plus typing on a phone sucks.
Let me know if you have specific questions.

This is not specific to the TF Prime, but rather all Honeycomb devices (And I guess Gingerbread too). Don't bother with the stock browsers until Chrome is finally introduced to Android, the stock browser is overall much clunkier and less responsive than other solutions that you can find on the market.
I personally use Opera Mobile on both Atrix 4G and Honeycomb Tablet, and I found a HUGE difference in responsiveness and ease of use.
EDIT: The thing about android is that only some stock apps are good (the others are barely adequate at best), however you can find excellent replacements on the market for whatever you need.

I couldn't agree more. The Honeycomb browser is horrible and I can't even believe it still has not been improved. Opera Mobile is a million times better! The feature to change the user agent to "desktop" alone makes it worth it.
No Honeycomb tablet can compare to the iPad 2 in terms of fluidity and smoothness. I can tell you from personal experience that Ice Cream Sandwich is the first version of Android that can compare to iOS devices in terms of smoothness and fluidity of the UI (yes, it's still not as fast as iOS, but for me it has finally reached the threshold of what I would consider to be smooth). I've used iPads and iPhones before and I know what you're talking about when it comes to responsiveness and smoothness. It's IMO the best part of iOS, and I'm willing to admit that even though I prefer Android. I've also used Android tablets, and nothing running Honeycomb can compare, point blank. Including the Transformer Prime. Anyone who tells you their Transformer Prime has as much UI fluidity, smoothness, and responsiveness right now is either lying, has low standards, or has never used an iPad before.
Wait until ICS to decide for yourself if the Prime is speedy enough. I have a HTC Sensation, and for me my phone has never been up to my standard of what reasonably smooth is until I installed a beta AOSP ICS ROM. Now, I'm not referring to anything other than speed when I say wait for ICS. I'm not going to tell you that ICS will magically fix certain problems the Prime is having like Wifi and GPS issues.

I understand that Honeycomb does not take advantage of multiple cores where ICS does. That would explain the difference if correct.

That's an extremely simplified explanation, and one that's not necessarily true.
For a while, a popular topic of discussion going around about ICS was that ICS incorporates hardware acceleration and multi-core support, whereas Honeycomb and Gingerbread don't. That was all pretty much dispelled by a well-known post from a Google engineer who explained that that was just a popular misconception, because Honeycomb already offers hardware acceleration and multi-core support.
If you asked me why ICS is faster, I think it boils down to 2 things: 1) it's just an overall cleaned up OS, and 2) it makes better use of the hardware available. It's not that it makes use of hardware which previous versions of Android didn't do at all (as pointed out, Honeycomb did have hardware acceleration and multi-core support), it's that I believe it will make better use of hardware. I'm not a Google engineer and so this is just a conjecture, but I'm fairly sure that you can be confident ICS makes better use of multi-cores. I think it's entirely reasonable to suggest that because Google knows one of the primary advantages of iOS is speed, and also because essentially all high end Android devices today are multi-core. If Google went into the development of ICS with the goal of making it a faster OS in order to close the gap with iOS, and they went into the development with the knowledge that essentially all devices that would use it would be multi-core, then they certainly put some effort into making better use of such hardware.

Sounds close to the same thing I said except in a paragraph instead of a sentence!
The prime in its current honeycomb state, especially after this most recent update, is right on par with the UI fluidity of ipad1 or 2. as I own one also. I stayed with ipad1 because ipad2 wasn't a big enough jump all around to jusitfy dishing out for a new one. I have used the new ones extensively also though. I am constantly using my devices day n and day out so I have a good scope of how they compare. If you decide to get the Prime, it would be a great choice. there have been some issues that has arised for some people but overall doesn't affect everyone. going from ipad2 to a Prime would be a huge upgrade all around the board. definitely check out the various threads, good ones and bad one, and be the judge. you have my vote for getting the prime though. as an Ipad owner also, ipad1 or 2 can't compare because of the larger number of things and customizations that comes with Prime and Android. Apple puts out some great products but you have to live by their rules in their closed ecosystem. with Android, there is alot more freedom. you have to jail break I devices just to do half the things Android does right out the box. that's what sold me on Android. what sold me on the Prime was its Superior Display, best out of any tablet period, the great battery life, best out of any Android tab and on par with ipad2 battery life, superior specs-more powerful by far than anything out now and more than likely next few months down the road. then you have the perfectly integrated keyboard dock option which even has built in battery and extends battery life eveb further. no other manufacturer has been able to replicate that as good. plus Asus has a proven track record of putting out firmwares the fastest and keeps supporting devices.
good luck on deciding.
I just can't thank everyone enough for their kind and genuine responses..
This type of feedback is exactly what I was looking for.. I hate to admit it but I was not aware of the Opera browser. I tried Dolphin on the G-Tab which is very fast on my Photon and thought maybe it was related to the G-Tab. Now I know..
What I take from the responses is that ICS will certainly be something that will take advantage of the Primes true capabalitites. I am willing to give and take.. not one sided and understand that some things will be better and some not so much but the majority of my use is really plain browsing and e-mail. I don't do gaming at the moment so the real thing I want to maintain is a snappy browser and UI.
Sounds like I need to keep the Prime on the list for sure.. thanks again.. really could not ask for more than the true feedback here and not some bias article on the net.
Cheers & Happy New Year to ALL!!
Stan
ok so my prime came yesterday and I haven't had much time to use it yet so don't take this as a real comparison.
So far the only thing worse about it is that hineycomb has a few hiccups sometimes. It hasn't annoyed me but then again maybe it will down the road. Also I pad 2 has a slightly faster browser but its really not a deal breaker. With opening and closing apps they are pretty much the same.
I'll update as time goes on and when ics comes out.

optimization is the name of the game. so far with most devices that have early builds of ICS on them, everything seems faster, so theoretically the prime should scream.
just a couple weeks and we'll see.
as to the OP's question, i've played with an ipad2 and owned an ipad1, i feel like with a few tweaks (change the launcher, use a different browser) the prime is just as fast if not faster than the ipad2 for most things even on HC.
iOS def has android beat when it comes to the amount of tablet optimized apps and games though, hopefully android will pick up the pace after ICS helps to unify the phone/tablet fragments. i am quite impressed with the tegra3 optimized games quality and fluidity though.

[Q] tablets slower than smartphones?

Just bought my tab 10.1 like a week ago, but as soon as I turned it on, I could noticeably see it run much slower than my Desire..
By slow, I mean the homepages take so long to rotate, bringing widgets or apps to homescreen or relocating them takes a few long seconds etc
the actual running of apps is not a problem
dunno.. dualcore, 1GB RAM.. thought it would make me wanna throw my phone away but it's completely the opposite atm..
Stock with all the apps loaded and the system not cleaned up, yes the tablet will be a lot slower, the displays anywhere will almost never give you the real experience because its soo overwhelmed with crap to show how fast it is. If you keep tasks killed via the Samsung task killer and don't just leave the tablet to fend for itself then it will be just as fast as your phone, for a faster than phone experiance, root, and install task 14 or overcome and your tablet will cruise and do so much more and fastern than your phone
At least we couldn't brick our cell phones back in the 80s ... they were already bricks

My galaxy s2 feels like it's on par with my tablet on task ROM. Plays games and videos just as good

I feel you dude, the tab is seriously slow on touch widz 3.1. Since its using the slowest dual core, the tegra 2.
My sgs2 is much faster in every way. Even apps are smoother.
Flash overcome rom made it much better since its upgraded to 3.2.
But still slower than a phone.
Finally the kang ics rom made it on par in terms on UI smoothness.
Sorry you receive so much bad comments here. Most people don't feel the pain.
After spending so much money, naturally we expect the best experience out of the box.
Sgs2 is great, superbly smooth without the need of any mod or custom roms.
But the tab out of the box experience is just bad.
Don't be a whiner, you already bought the tab, learn the flash custom rom and you'll be happy,
Despite being slower than sgs2, I still prefer using the tab as bigger screen is really much comfortable for browsing.
@Ray1, It isn't the whole idea of raging at someone over a touch device, Hell even the first Glofish/Windows based touch phones were slow as HELL, I just feel that people have forgotten what it's like to have, I don't know, patience?
Sure it's a smart device, but also realize that the loading is based on how much information it has to process, Compare a 4" screen to something that is 10" it's like comparing Windows 95 and Windows XP, In a 4" device you would have everything served asap only because the DPI is lesser compared to the tablet, I feel that your comparison of the fastest smartphone in the market at the moment versus the tablet which was supposed to be an upgrade of the 7" tablet is somewhat unfair. I guess some people can't learn to appreciate, and it's all about bringing up the "car theory" of what is the fastest.
Just so you know, no offence in any of this, but the tablet was built to handle ICS. If the Google Nexus was running HC or Gingerbread, you would even rage at how horribly slow it is. Don't blame the system for being slow, blame the OS, just a minor update, Smartphones had the evolution of smoothness from Eclair>Froyo>Gingerbread where as tablet's are still in their first era of figuring out its era of smoothness, however ICS is the perfection of what HC had failed to provide and they just didn't care about pushing it out onto the next HC update because it would be pointless to try and fix something that was way past it's testing phase, better example would be trying to upgrade a Windows XP when you have an i7, you wouldn't touch the XP now that you have an i7 now would you?
@Benzo I completely agree with you on your POV
Edit 2: I want to keep this on topic.
@xcly - Yes you are right it seems. Many smartphones are faster than tablets.
My wife's Droid (something) I can't remember the model, I just tested switched screens instantly while my tablet takes a second to render the graphics and move to a different screen. Sorry you're disappointed with your purchase.

Is this where that rant was?
Must have got reported and deleted.
So we can complain, but not complain about the complaining? Now that makes my day. LOL
What a double standard. But, still makes me laugh.
EDIT: Looks like this "is" where several posts got deleted, not just my own, because we "complained" with reason based explanations about posts complaining about bananas not being as red as apples. 'nuff said.
@ The Mod who removed my post(s) I send a thank you because it showed how old people get grumpy and vocal sometimes when they disagree with what's being stated.
@Misledz - It appears your latest post doesn't agree with the OP and gives reasoning. So I might expect it to be gone soon too. As will this one probably will be also. I'm off to bed.
get cm9
You should definitely try out the cm9 pre alpha build, my tablet was equally as slow, almost unbearably, to the point where there was lag when using the keyboard. But cm9 is quick and speedy and if you don't mind losing the camera on ur tab for awhile definitely worth the update.
ah well at least i know i'm not alone in this tablet slowness :/
you know.. i would've rooted it the first second i got it out of the box but it's not just for my own use so really don't have a choice on flashing a better ROM
will probably have to get meself a new phone instead lol
Tablets are also pushing more pixels than a phone with the same processor hence the UI lag

its been awhile since i check this thread.
seems that some post were deleted. lol...
seeing how long post gets deleted, i shall keep my opinions as brief as possible.
excuse for tab10 being slow due to big screen resolution is invalid.
galaxy note and tab 7.7 similar resolution, but they are very smooth with no lag.
great experience out of the box.
reason: they use the exynos chipset similar to sgs2.
the performance is great. such as loading apps, actually running them, scrolling, rotating. there is virtually no lag.
My hate here, and rant, is mainly towards NVIDEA and their hopelessly weak procerssor and GPU. tegra2 is failure, tarnish android image. so sad that all first gen tablet uses it. makes majority average users feel android is slow.
lets make playing field fair and compare base on category.
tablet: tab7.7 powns tab10.1 and every other tegra2 tab out there. benchmark and real life usage.
phones: sgs2 powns lg optimus 2x and motorola atrix(use tegra2 as well). if want to be more fair, just compare optimus 2x, since atric has qhd screen.
i always knew tab10.1 use tegra2, but i still bought it thinking there isn much difference(i was so naive at that time). but its really really bad. HC makes it even worst. as the thread starter mention, its really a shame tab slower than phone.
look at the competition. i'm not apple fan, but i admit it, ipad2 is just soooo smooth and fast. (of cos it has its limitation and weakness), but over all user experience is smooth. the tab10.1 in the out of the box state is just.....sad.(dont want to elaborate).
i'm not a whiner. since i spend so much $$ for it.
i force myself to learn about rooting, and flashing rom. now on kang ICS, the performance is in the acceptable range.
tegra2, the first dual core, also the weakest and slowest.
tegra3, first quad core. but i'm not interested, will wait and see what TI and samsung offer.
take a look how tegra 3 get powned by TI's dual core.
being the first does not guarantee good performance.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 with MIUI.
I have a P7500 3G with CM9 KANG ICS.
I have used both for web browsing and I did see my phone as faster until I set my CPU of my tablet to 1.4ghz.
It really has made a difference and my tablet browsing is awesome and quick.
I would also try using the Google Chrome Beta Browser. It makes web browsing a dream
Is there any way of speeding up the scrolling between homescreens? I prefer not to root.
Also for me the speed is disappointing. Used to the Ipad and Galaxy S2.
Without widgets it is somewhat faster but widgets is the nr. 1 reason to go for Android.
Huib
Wow this thread is over a year old now lol. You can't do much without rooting I'm afraid..
Disable all system apps you don't use and see if that makes any difference. Otherwise, it's root and freeze more apps or flash custom roms.

tp vs ipad 1..

just was given a hp tp. i currently own a ipad 1. i want to sell one of the... the ipad will sell for more. How does a hp tp on cm9 compare? iIuse the ipaf for web browsing and YouTube only.. sometimes hulu and a couple games.
The best thing I like is the battery. iI charge it onceevery few weeks. It just never dies. how does the tp compare?
keep whichever you are happier with
touch pad for the win. tp with cm9 blows the doors off a first gen ipad hands down. there isnt even room for argument. i can go into all the specifics and details but just do the right thing and sell the icrap.
Agreed!

if battery life is a big deal and you don't do much with a tablet.. keep the ipad.. you will not be happy with battery of the hptp
I can't stand Apple products because of their restrictions and how the company is run (patent trolls), so I'd probably take a TP over an iPad 4 (if I had to use them and couldn't sell). But from a neutral point of view here is my opinion.
The 1st iPad is not receiving updates anymore, its stuck on iOS 5. But there is a vast library of apps that will run on it but I'm not sure how the Apple ecosystem works with unsupported devices. Meaning if an app gets a new version that requires iOS6 is the iOS5 version still available or does it get pulled, on Android its up to the dev. Officially the Touchpad is also done receiving updates and WebOS has a lot fewer apps than iOS. Its great for Youtube and web surfing as both WebOS and Android have Adobe Flash. Flash Android and you'll get many more apps but it won't be as stable of an OS so you may have to deal with some random reboots and battery drain, but its not that bad.
For pure hardware, the Touchpad is much better than the 1st iPad. It has much more RAM, a camera, and a dual core processor. If you want something with a stable OS and a lot of apps keep the iPad. If you want something that runs a stable OS with limited apps plus the ability to boot other ROMs with more apps and customizability, go for the Touchpad. For me, half the fun of the Touchpad/Android is the ability to tinker and customize.
Stick with the ipad, it'll feel faster. While the hardware in the TP is better than the ipad 1, Apple really has the 60fps-everything-drawn-by-GPU thing going for it, which makes everything else feel dirt slow in comparison. Better specs don't mean much when the experience is subpar.
I think the iPad 1s have had statistically better scores on graphics benchmarks compared to many of the top performing android tablets, probably because of it's software and anti-multitask (don't quote me on that). If you don't want to think too much or love the 3rd party support keep the iPad. But the touchpad does wonders for the price since it has better hardware besides graphics. Plus with camera almost fully functional on cm9 you can oovoo and stuff

I'd disagree. The Touchpad is very quick and smooth. I wouldn't say it feels like dirt compared to an iPad 1. Far from it.
If you want a 100% "no thought no effort" experience, stick with the iPad. The TouchPad still has some "quirks" though it is 99% there.
If you prefer more free apps and Google's services, then you're a Droidhead and you'll put up with that 1% of "issues" and keep the TouchPad.
The big advantage to the touchpad is dual booting, webos and Android.
You won't get good battery life in android, but you will in webos.
There are still cm9 nightlies being put out for the touch pad, even though now they are more like weeklies. Dorregaray has put out a camera patch that works with the official nightlies, so now you have a camera available for Android.
If all you'll be using it for is emails, websurfing and video watching, I would recommend the touchpad. You can do all that perfectly well in webos and have a great battery life. If you want a better selection of apps, then use android, even though the battery life won't be as good.
You need to know more techie stuff with the touch pad, whereas the iPad just works, as the apple adds say. But I enjoy the touch pad much more than the iPad. I have access to 2 touch pads and 2 iPads, so I have compared them before.
Whatever decision you make you'll be fine. They're both good tablets.
Good luck.
the dual boot webos/droid is a big advantage, as previously stated.
when im home i use droid for all features.. networking, printers etc..but battery life is bad..
if i take hptp out, i use webos to use the internet, email internet radio etc..
plus, i have kalemsoft player to let me access my home pc media to watch movies etc... and still get good battery life..i can video skype ..
I tried to keep up with WebOS but after a year or so I just gave up. I haven't booted to WebOS in some time now. I own an iPhone 4 and two Android Tablets. I've come to prefer the flexibility that Android give you and have been able to do anything I do on my iPhone on my tablets. If all the OP is doing is what they described, it doesn't really matter what tablet they keep but it's nice to know that there is still custom ROM development going on with the HP Touchpad and I personally think it is a lot more fun to own a tablet that keeps me interested in development, flashing new ROM's and keeping up with the forums.
Stick with iPad 1 and just jailbreak for added functions
I say get sell the ipad ... iOS has become so basic if u happen to be under 13 stick with the basics that apple gives you with their cheap hardware but I got to give it to them they know how to make a lot out of their products... I personally will sell both and get a galaxy note 10 or a Asus transformer
Sent from my cm_tenderloin using xda app-developers app
sell both of them, acquire ipad2 or an asus tf300 lol. I'm an android guy, but I do recognize that the ipad is very smooth and really good for people who don't like to tinker, or aren't very tech savvy. My parents have an ipad2 and it's still a very good tablet, and its buttery smooth.
The asus tf300 prices are dropping fast, and a really good bargain for what you get (micro SD slot, quad-core tegra 3, fast updates from asus, good screen). If you like to tinker a bit, you'll like the tf300.
CM9 has gotten so mature on the Touchpad I sold my iPad3 for it.

Pretty basic needs-
1) iOS Safari will feel pretty smooth and is quite fast- the stock AOSP browser for CM9/10 is also quite good (nice features like incognito / auto-login / request desktop site). You also have other options on Android (Dolphin is fastest, has nice gestures. Chrome has nice sync features, seems a little buggy though (may have been fixed in yesterday's update).
2) The Android Youtube app is phenomenal far superior to anything available on iOS (Protube doesn't come close).
3) Games run surprisingly well on the Touchpad. Check out Dead Trigger- you will be impressed!

Battery isn't bad. I would say its definitely not the iPad's equal, but its reasonable and the Touchstone is very nice.
---
So to answer your question, based on your needs and my experience I would sell the iPad. Install -SGA-'s custom ROMs or try out Jelly Bean. The community's dedication to the HP Touchpad has really won me over to Android. Very impressed to say the least.
If optimized (supercharged, 1.5ghz, 30-40% up threshold in setcpu) the Touchpad with CM10 will completely outperform the 1st iPad in general web browsing, it is much closer to (even surpassing) the iPad 2. Not to mention it has 4x the amount of ram of the iPad 1 and 2x the amount of the iPad2, that means more tabs and apps open without reloading when switching from app to app.
The app store is an advantage for the iPad as there are still a lot more apps compared to the Play store. Also, the battery on the Touchpad is not going to come close to any iPad.
I know that benchmarks don't usually mean much but here are a few anyway..
1.7ghz PA 2.99
And to compare with a recent some recent tests by Toms Hardware and AnandTech
The Touchpad has really improved over the last few months.

I like my touchpad as I have an android phone so I can use all the same google apps on both abd don't mind putting the tp on the charger every other day. My brother and his wife both have macbooks and iphones so they took their touchpads back and purchased ipads.
