visibility in sunlight?! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys i want to know how good the screen is on this phone as i am thinking about buying one, and i thought you guys who own it will be able to tell me what the reviews seem to miss.
How visible is the phone in sunlight? and compared to my friends HTC desire..which was AWFULLLLL, but with brightness up on iphone it was good enough.
Unbiased opinion please!!

Great. You won't have any prob. I tested it, had no prob at all. Had it on Auto Brightness, all time.
Gsmarena quote,
All in all, Super AMOLED Plus screens and mobile phones are really meant for each other. It’s a perfect match that reveals all the strengths (unrivaled image quality, perfect viewing angles, energy efficiency and great sunlight legibility), without suffering the traditional OLED weaknesses (higher production costs for larger units and shorter life).

Regards.

have your screen bright, and this is awesome!

Superb, much to my surprise. Could watch vids on beach in Sardinian sunshine this summer with no problems - apart from sand

Super Amoled is the best display especially when viewing in sunlight. So you will not regret

[REQ] Opinions from Former Epic4G owners.

I am looking for opinions from former Epic4G owners on the differences in the screen quality between these two phones.
Pro's/Con's, quality, hue, color temperature, contrast, visibility in bright sunlight, etc. Your opinions and input would be greatly appreciated.
TIA
Mike
This screen actually looks better in my opinion... also when in direct sunlight.. wow you still see it better than ever.

I prefer the Epic screen and camera quality over this Photon but the speed, gps and battery life made it a worthy upgrade for me.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
Im about to replace my epic with a photon. Do you all see an improvement in 3G speeds? My 3G speeds on this epic are AWFUL.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
The epic had a great screen but so many things just didn't work well. My gps was useless and bluetooth and wifi were flaky.
On the photon everything works. It is fast as hell too. The screen, while not as good as the epic, is better than the evo 4g.
the SAMOLOED is very impressive when it comes to depth, contrast, detail, etc..
I really miss looking at the screen on my Epic.. however, (if you're only comparing screens).. the Photon screen is pretty damn good.. I can see it in bright sunlight w/ sunglasses on. it doesn't look grainy, i notice that while scrolling, it seems to 'dim' a little bit but this might be a characteristic of the pentile display.. colors look just fine (although, to be fair, I'm color blind ).. If you're looking for a Hi-Def TV... go get one. this is a damn phone LMFAO.
The screen is better than the Evo 3D FWIW...
now, to be fair, you should also compare the other aspects of the devices to make an informed decision.. the GPS works on photon/flaky on Epic.. same for bluetooth. the 3G radio on Photon works really well and is fairly quick (compared to the Epic).. bluetooth just works on photon/flaky on epic. battery life on photon is disgustingly good (is that a word ?? LOL).. Epic = mediocre..
to be fair, I have SRF 1.2 on my Epic and I love that device.. I just don't have any complaints (yet) w/ the photon and I've had it a week
I hope this helps
Was running SFR 1.2 and now running modified EG22 on my Epic4G. I am one of the lucky ones that has a fully functioning GPS since the Froyo update and haven't have any other major issues.
I am legally blind/low vision impaired so my major concerns are about screen visibility at night and bright sunlight as well as color temperature, hue and contrast as these are very important to me for the ability to view images without losing detail. The Epic4G is definitely adequate and I do love a hardware keyboard but I am drawn to the slightly larger screen size and higher processing capabilities.
The epic had a better screen and camera, but the screen on the Photon is nice. Like others have said, works in direct sunlight even with sunglasses on.
One issue I have is that watching HD mp4s worked on the epic, but not on the Photon.
Otherwise, the photon is a better phone. I had issues with wifi and gps on the epic but no problems on the photon. Everything else is improved, but i don't find the improvements all that drastic. Web browsing is faster, but not exceptionally faster.
I think the scrern has a bit of a blueish tint to it. Its very bright very easy to see. I haven't noticed really anything wrong with the screen. because its 540 x 960. Some print may be smaller then they where on the epic.

HTC Rezound vs Droid Razr (video)

It is quite a good comparison...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OU4V7kLV7hc&feature=relmfu
Thank you,
it's not really about the benchmarks for me, but I'm happy to see that the RAM is very fast.
The thing that really comes to my mind when seeing this comparison is "Damn, the Rezound's screen is bad! Poor colour, poor contrast, grey blacks."
The LCD will never look as good as an AMOLED when viewed on an angle. Also the screen resolution differences will throw the benchmarks off. Best evaluation is in hand based off your personal needs and feel.
Sent from my XT910 using xda premium
This really does showcase how much nicer the RAZR's screen is than the Rezound's; resolution be damned. Also, it's good that benchmarks are affected by resolution because the device will reflect that in actual usage. Not that the current benchmarks are all that great, but making a test resolution agnostic isn't very realistic.

You are welcome. The RAM and the screen was the main reason I posted this. The RAZR's screen is definitely better.

Agree. I too have an LCD and believe me, placing an AMOLED next to it just kills it.

I agree. The Razr's screen is WAAAAYY superior to the Rezound. To be honest, my only fear was the Rezound's resolution. I was worried that it will give the Razr a run for its money. Am happy to see, its nowhere close...
It does appear the display res is hurting Rezound performance. I tested the utter heck out of both devices, before choosing the Razr.
I like playing game emulators and the Razr has far better touch response and plays games faster than the Rezound. No comparison with N64 and PSX for performance and all emulators are rough with touch response on the Rezound.
Display res matters big on emulators. That is why they play faster when you play them in their smaller native windows. Less pixels to push.
Added: The real odd thing is the Flyer is the single core version of same chip, but also plays games far better. Performance and touch response.
Probably to do with the Rezounds pixel density.

comparison video of SGS2 vs. XPERIA S

hey, just ran the following side by side...
both same file and HD 720p.
Xperia has a nice HD screen..
Both units are at full brightness.
angles on the samsung is much much better..
Blacks are better...
i will do a comparison with Iphone 4S later on...
but Super AMOLED plus still kicks Sony's ass..
anyone have this kind of results???

No. I'm glad the Sony uses a more natural-colored LCD screen than the day-glo, turqoise-tinted AMOLED of Samsung.
any video footage of these phones running side by side?
haha I think my friend you're dreaming that Samsung Display kicks Sony's Ass, I compared the two displays and XPS Display is more vibrant in colours and it's very nice to look onto.
My opinion is...
Samsung Amoled Plus display on SGS2
Pros:
- Best contrast
- Beter viewing angles
- True black
Cons:
- Too much color saturation
- Yellow tinting problem
- Too low resolution for such a big display (217 ppi)
Sony Bravia HD display on Xperia S
Pros:
- More natural colors
- Razor sharp definition (342 ppi)
- Very good contrast
Cons:
- I feel whites are slightly on the yellow side
- Poor viewing angles (although better than many LCDs, but behind IPS displays)
Everyone just choose your poison
I still can't find the perfect LCD..... although for me IPS is the closest so far, if HTC One S had SLCD2 I'd probably have waited for it.
honestly, I don't understand why everyone is complaining about poor viewing angle, its your phone, think of the viewing angle as a benefit for more privacy.

Maybe I don't have anything to hide in my phone, but it bothers me more the fact that tilting the phone a few degrees can change the colors than someone trying to watch my screen
super amoled is good but samsung is like a toy or cartoons and its UI..XPS is HD the best resolution display on market today besting iP4s and GNEX..sound quality is 100times better than on samsung especially when using headset its same level as beats audio.the UI is refined and it looks formal/professional like iphone has...viewing angle is not a big issue, im not using my phone at side ways anyway hehehe..Build quality is superb its not wide so it fits in hand comfortably not like other phones. NFC smart tags rocks and sony made a good one with this making the NFC useful in other ways..

Yeah! Me too, viewing angle isn't a big issue, we don't need it every time.
But now we can see the White Magic display on Xperia P is very good!
In future that'll come with all Sony's phones ?

Well after using the phone for a week now I find the discussion about viewing angles in my perspective a non issue...
Sent from my Sony Xperia S (LT26i)
I dunno,
I don't ever look at my phone from an angle, nor do I have people gather around my phone to watch a video. We have TV's and movie theaters for that.
I couldn't care less about viewing my phone from the side.
I agree viewing angle is not an issue on the XS. My experience having both the galaxy s2 and XS is that the screen on the XS is significantly better than the galaxy. The clarity of fonts is exceptional, and the outdoor performance in sunlight is also much better. The S2 is terrible in sunlight, and only really came into it's own watching videos in a dimly lit room.
I think this video will have a clear view on which screen is better..
http://youtu.be/L7KPTYPpOVU
Arc S and SGS 2
View angle is not too bad in XS but i not fancy whether someone sitting next to me in the meeting, reading my confidencial mgs with my girlfriend " talking about last night " better if the viewing angle are not that great
Is it ?
I dont have an issue with viewing angels.
Besides that, i don't like the oversaturation on those AMOLED screens.
Colors are just way to vibrant.
And another thing, XS is alot better viewable in sunlight.
I like the deep blacks with an AMOLED display but aside fromt that i couldn't really give a monkeys toss about viewing angles. Have to say i'm impressed by how well the Xperia S screen fares out in the open and in direct sunlight.
This XPS is such a premium device, great built/design and at last a android phone which has better Display than that retina display of iPhone, superb camera, great audio output both on speaker and headset, and i think the best UI for android phone very impressive and smooth UI and animations..
Got the Samsung GS2 and Sony Xp S. strange that i see sony S screen beets S2 in many ways, even my friends agree with me , like if amoled not that big deal after all, cos LCD still can handel it !! Nd HTC Sensation Xe screen is no mach for the xperia S!!
I think ppl should see both in real eyes not from recording via youtube !!!
try to take some sampels and post them !

SKY GO

Guys, i know the Z ultra has a big screen but i just compared the same stream on a galaxy s3 and honestly the colours and picture looked sooooooooo much better on the s3, i know its a smaller screen but im not talking about clarity im talking about colours, i was quite sad actually haha as that phones as 720p screen...
why is this happening? i don't believe its to do with colours looking "natural" lol.. or isit?
Having come from many previous Sammy devices there is a difference. The Samsung screens I think blow out the colors and are over saturated. The Sony screens are more true to life. I must admit it took me a few days to get used to it, but now I much prefer the Sony over the Samsung screen.
This is true with any luck vs led. The led will have over saturation, the lcd has realistic coloring. I don't know which I like more lol. But I'm very happy with my xzu
Sent a long time ago from a galaxy far, far away...
Yeah, AMOLED is crazy oversaturated, and it's not realistic at all. A lot of people like the oversaturation, and i liked it myself when i had the Note, but i found the Ultra's LCD panel to be much much better on the eyes. AMOLED is one step from burning through people's retinas. People look normal on LCD, while they look like carrots, straight from Jersey Shore on AMOLED.
- AMOLED: Deep blacks, crazy oversaturated
- LCD: Blacks are not as deep, but colors are much more realistic
It comes down to preferences. Some like AMOLED and some like LCD. End of story.

Outdoor visibility (max brightness)

Rate this thread to express how well you can see the LG G6's display outdoors. In case you've been playing Minecraft for 18 months straight, you might not known how to get outside anymore. Well, find the door and walk through it. A higher rating indicates that it has very high maximum brightness and thus fantastic outdoor visibility in direct sunlight.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Would've loved an amoled screen.
Well that's sure to help anyone considering getting the G6.
Are you sure it's not Amoled? Did you research reviews and specs before you were forced to get your G6?
Please don't reply.
Well i have used the phone in direct sunlight and cant really say anything bad about it is readable so tha i can take calls, read texts but i wouldn't go out and start watching a video since when i say direct sunlight its like 90+°F lol but if i sit in a sunlight area with a bit of wind then yes phone is plenty bright enought for me to watch content on and enjoy it
For me it deserves 4 stars. LG G6 is more than sufficiently visible under direct sunlight.
It's pretty amazing to me that nobody other than Samsung has figured out oled for mobile screens. You know lg has been working on it for years, but for some reason they just can't mass produce it. Samsung has it mastered.
Actually LG isn't really starting to dabble in small OLED until next year.
As far as screen quality goes I saw a review stating measured 557 nits, as bright as the iPhone 7. Color accuracy was better than the iPhone and S7. Gamut was a little disappointing with 136% sRGB vs 197% for the S7. All in all a great display, probably the best LCD ever put in a phone.

ComputerBase (Germany) even measured 624nits:

Definitely bright enough.

im very impressed with the lg g5's display. super bright, very rich in color. and crazy sharp.
It's summer season where I'm at and yesterday I was at the beach. Visibility is low in outdoor bright light.
Probably a weird question, but how is this phone when using with polarised sunglasses?
My Z2 turns to black in some angles in portrait mode and completely black in horizontal.
Cheers
I will have pretty good comparison. HTC 10 was having highest ppi and regarded as the best lCD display. However outdoor visibility was extremely bad. I am not sure but I think it is a characteristics of LCD display . One thing I notice that even for camera HTC 10 was relying on display. Whenever I was opening camera app the screen was automatically turning 100% bright and then comeback to normal after closing the app. It happen with third party camera app as well. I will report once I get G6.

Don't use auto brightness. Auto brightness is buggy in most devices. Try to do it manually.

Yes it may be buggy however according to http://www.androidauthority.com/lg-g6-review-752130/
the LG G6 display actually gets brighter than 100% when it is set to AUTO.
"Putting it through our testing, we found the display to have a max manual brightness of 556 nits, which is boosted to a very respectable 663 nits when auto brightness is engaged under direct light. In sunlight, this is likely to be even higher"
I have no way to test this myself. The display is just barely usable in direct sunlight. Better than my G3 though. I wish it was better in this regard since I use this as my motorcycle GPS sometimes.
