No rotating to landscape mode - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When ever I turn my phone horizontally while on the homescreens it doesn't turn into landscape mode (I already made sure that in settings-display the "auto-rotate screen" option is marked). The weird thing is that is does auto-rotate if I'm not on the home screens (say, if I'm on the web, or checking out a photo, or on the market, etc).
Any thoughts?

double post

The launcher is not compatible with landscape, would be my first thought. Try a different launcher (Go Launcher rotates, if set to do so in its own preferences).

Silly me. I had selected the option on the SGS2's settings but not on the launcher. Thanks! Everything is working now.

Are you using TouchWiz? I don't use it myself, and I'm just curious for future reference.

Active kick stand

I've seen on reviews that when it's enabled, it's supposed to give you the option between switching to landscape mode or launching Widget Clock.
Mine just seems to flip to landscape mode when enabled (or do nothing when disabled).
I can't quite remember if maybe I saw the choice prompt once and told it to always put me in landscape, but that seems quite plausible.
I'm curious to try out Widget Clock now, but I can't seem to figure out how to make it come out anymore. It doesn't show up in the app list, and when I go to manage apps and scroll to Launcher Pro, the launcher I'm currently using, it doesn't show up as set as any defaults (which is odd, shouldn't it at least be my home screen default?), so there's nothing for me to clear out.
When your kickstand is in use and you are in landscape mode pull down the notifications menu. From there you will be able to access the widget clock and change your default preferences.
Turns out Widget Clock only works if you're running the default Motoblur launcher. I was running Launcher Pro, and the notification never pops up.
That's a shame.

Try using Home Switcher to go back to MotoBlur and then activate the kickstand.

Yup, that's how I discovered the root of the problem. Pretty awkward way to use this feature in the long run, though. I'm just going to be turning off the feature.

I'm using GLEX and my Widget Clock works fine on kickstand and in my HD dock. If it doesn't automatically pop up, hit your home button and it should switch to the clock.

Text Message Notifications

When I get a text message Ive got my phone set to turn the screen on. I have a stand for my phone that props it up and points it at me in my office. Is there a way to get it to display the notification horizontally on the screen rather than in the standard vertical position on the lock screen?
I think this has something to do with the lock screen being portrait. I could be wrong though

If you mean the homescreen, it depends of your launcher. Almost of all have an option to achieve it (screen settings >orientation settings, or something like that).
If you mean all the GUI, and you have a CyanogenMod based ROM, go to Settings >CM Setings >Screen, and disable 0° option.

My launcher is ADW EX. Not sure on version.
I sometimes use WidgetLocker when I feel like changing things up between MIUI themes and other lock screens.

In the homescreen, press menu button >more >ADW Settings, and go to UI Settings >Screen preferences >Home orientation. Select Landscape.
In the bottom of ADW Settings screen you can view which is your version

That changes home screen orientation, not the lockscreen orientation.
Damn... that's right. Well, searching I found this. It's a long process, but it's pretty easy

On MIUI in the Framework-Res I dont have a bools.xml file or the config_ string.
Anyone else?
you can set widget locker to alter the orientation to match the phones.

[DIY] Knock-Off on any Non-Stock ROM

Just some info for everyone that is wondering, not sure if this has been covered yet, I looked and it seems that it hasn't been mentioned.
This is a very easy way to get customized knock-off (double-tap to turn off screen) working on any non-stock ROM where knock-off might not be included.
1. Download GMD Gesture Control from the market. You should probably use the paid version since the free version doesn't support custom gestures. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.goodmooddroid.gesturecontrol&hl=en
2. Download the Screen Off app (free). https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en
3. Open up GMD and turn off any gestures you don't want that are included with the app.
4. Click on User Gestures up top, and then click path.
5. Under "Gesture Path", type in "T-T"
6. Click under action, select "application" and select "Screen Off" (the one that you just downloaded).
7. Click "Save" at the bottom, and bam. Double-tap goes to screen off.
**NOTE** I changed the starting zone (in the Create Gesture window) to only recognize double-taps on my status bar region, because often I would shut my screen off without meaning to.
Sorry, if this is a repost, I just spent a long hour pulling my hair out trying to get this to work with Nova launcher (wanted my double-tap to work anywhere in my ROM), and was super stoked when I figured this out.
Great idea I wonder why I haven't thought about this before
Thank you. I tried to spread the word on this method when CM was first released for the G2. My only difference is I use Secure Settings
Edit: just realized you missed another obvious bit
If you use Nova or Apex you can set a double tap gesture to turn off the screen the same way. Suddenly you have the same functionality as LG included

Ah good idea. Then you can have an easier time turning the screen off when you're in your launcher. Good stuff.

How can you do the screen off? I stopped using Nova because I could no longer turn off the screen, there is no turn screen of under gesture settings.

Hi,
It works with Nova, you need to double-tap in the notification bar area (but only here), nothing to set in Nova it works just like that...
How about screen on?

You are correct, there isn't a screen off option. However, you can set the double tap gesture to open a SHORTCUT that will turn the screen off.
I'm assuming the app OP linked to allows you to set a shortcut for screen off. If not, Secure Settings for sure does (it's what I use).
Here's proof that it works
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvesNzvgKDQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player
That video uses OP's GMD Gesture control trick and Nova Launcher's double tap gesture. Only difference is I'm using secure settings instead of the screen off app
Ok, for those who want to use screen off with Nova or CM do this.
Download this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en
in Nova Settings go to gesture and Buttons/ Double tap/ and select Screen off, Simple as that. GL

Home Screen and App Drawer Auto Rotate?

Dies anyone know of there is a native option to have the home screens and App drawer rotate (to landscape). I checked the auto rotate option in settings but home screens and App drawer are fixed in portrait mode (settings screen and others do rotate). I had this feature on my g2 and wondering if they removed it. Thanks
I would also like to know if there is a way to get the launcher to rotate. I normally use Nova Launcher but I'm kind of fond of the LG G3's launcher minus this little issue. I'm rooted and have tried various options with G3 Tweaksbox and Gravitybox to no avail, also unlocked the hidden Home menu and found a couple of promising options, but nothing seems to apply. I supposed a rotation app might work, but I'd prefer not to run one.

Ok, I figured it out by accident. You need to enable hidden launcher settings using G3 Tweaksbox. Then go into the hidden settings and do the following:
(note these are both towards the end of the options)
UNCHECK the following "FEATURE_USE_PORTAIT_ONLY"
CHECK the following "FEATURE_USE_SYSTEM_ORIENTATION_CHANGE"
There are others that seem to be related to auto rotation, but I made the above changes and everything seems to be working fine except the stock 5x2 weather widget w time which won't load when rotating the screen to landscape. All others seem fine.
Sweet, thanks for posting this. I had the first one unchecked but hadn't done anything to the second one. Now, I'm rotating how I choose!

At first i was using save options in the 3rd tab but that did not nothing accept reset my homescreens so dont do that. All you have to do is make your changes and hit the home button.
Btw unrelated but figure I'd share. After swearing I'd stay with the stock launcher I moved to nova prime. The auto rotate feature is an option plus the smoothness cant be matched by stock. I also replicated everything to match what i had on the stock launcher. Oh and the replicated version of the 5x2 weather widget i mentioned rotates fine with nova.

Yep, reset my homescreen setup. Ouch!!!!
I'll stick to stock. I don't the stock widget. I use Weatherbug Elite, since Blackberry Storm days....
I don't have any lag. I froze almost everything. I'm good. Just like the rotate because I use the phone horizontally in the car.
Thanks

Noob Question
Noob question but after turning the hidden settings on in Tweaksbox, I cant find the hidden settings!
Where are the hidden settings?
I was excited because I really want the homescreen to be able to rotate to landscape, but I can't seem to find the hidden settings you talk of. Are they still in the G3 Tweaksbox app or somewhere else? When I check the "Enable LG launchers hidden settings" I get the checkbox, but nothing else happens, even after I reboot. What am I missing?
I'm on a LG G2 with the CloudyG3 port installed

for the g 3 at least it's located under the home screen settings on the settings at the bottom.
The two settings mentioned worked perfectly for me. Many thanks, rotation locker also worked but this is better since it sticks each boot.
Is there a guide anywhere that details what each of the settings in this hidden menu does?

I have searched but haven't been able to find anything. If anyone knows, I'd be very interested in this also.
My G3 was doing this yesterday. Put it on safe mode and auto rotate started working again. Restarted the phone and now it works fine. Go figure. Software bug.
It's been about ten minutes and so far so good. I have a Sprint G3.

Launcher choice

I didn't like how the stock launcher only gave you only a few applications to choose from on the top screen when you were in 'T' mode. I played around with Nova Launcher and changing the options to auto rotate seems to work pretty well.
Let me know how you did it. And if you came up with a better solution.
1. Too screen
2. Bottom screen
3. Top screen (app drawer)
@kaluna00
Same here.
I always select auto rotate for any phone w/Nova Launcher.
Another tool I use is Ultimate Rotation Control (Pro) from the Google Play Store. It has a basic default selection & you can customize on a per-app basis.
Been a good while since the app was last updated, but, it's still 100% functional.
This phone would be a perfect candidate for having Nova Launcher as the default home UI, as Razer has with their two phones. Naturally, it'd need a bit of tweaking for the 2nd display, but, anything other than the stock Launcher would be an improvement.

It allows for orientation on a per-app basis.
Basically, you select a default orientation, whatever that may be (say, automatic). Then, if you want certain apps to remain in something else, say, portrait mode, you can select that app to ignore the default orientation & remain locked in portrait mode.
So, the app isn't really necessary for Nova Launcher, but, a nice tool to have for the rest of your apps.
After a factory data reset. I was playing more with the stock launcher. Hi believe it is a little bit snappier. I'm not a fan of the carousel on the top screen. However, you can swipe up and get into the app drawer on the top screen. You also still can double tap to turn the screen off. Without going into an administrator lock where fingerprints do not work (you need to use the pattern or your code)
Microsoft Launcher is good and feels native if you aren't a fan of carousel mode. The icons will just rotate in landscape. Worth checking out.

Testing out ruthless launcher. Mostly like it. I'll play with it for a few days and let you know how it sticks.
I liked ruthless launcher, but it would not allow me to double tap off the screen unless I gave it elevated rights. I did so, but after you double tap the screen off it locks the phone and you can't activate the fingerprint sensor without hitting the power button. I also noticed that if you double tap to lock the phone and then swing it open the second screen is still unlocked and you have access to the phone. That was the deal killer for me. Back to the stock launcher.
To get out of Carousel mode when you winging the phone open. Just swipe up and you will get to your app drawer
This is my screen setup using

Allow ruthless to be set as a second screen app. On the second screen select ruthless launcher. Then, swipe up and hold to bring up recent apps. Then pin the ruthless launcher. You should be set after that
