Text Message Notifications - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I get a text message Ive got my phone set to turn the screen on. I have a stand for my phone that props it up and points it at me in my office. Is there a way to get it to display the notification horizontally on the screen rather than in the standard vertical position on the lock screen?

I think this has something to do with the lock screen being portrait. I could be wrong though

If you mean the homescreen, it depends of your launcher. Almost of all have an option to achieve it (screen settings >orientation settings, or something like that).
If you mean all the GUI, and you have a CyanogenMod based ROM, go to Settings >CM Setings >Screen, and disable 0° option.

My launcher is ADW EX. Not sure on version.
I sometimes use WidgetLocker when I feel like changing things up between MIUI themes and other lock screens.

In the homescreen, press menu button >more >ADW Settings, and go to UI Settings >Screen preferences >Home orientation. Select Landscape.
In the bottom of ADW Settings screen you can view which is your version

That changes home screen orientation, not the lockscreen orientation.

Damn... that's right. Well, searching I found this. It's a long process, but it's pretty easy

On MIUI in the Framework-Res I dont have a bools.xml file or the config_ string.

Anyone else?

you can set widget locker to alter the orientation to match the phones.

Active kick stand

I've seen on reviews that when it's enabled, it's supposed to give you the option between switching to landscape mode or launching Widget Clock.
Mine just seems to flip to landscape mode when enabled (or do nothing when disabled).
I can't quite remember if maybe I saw the choice prompt once and told it to always put me in landscape, but that seems quite plausible.
I'm curious to try out Widget Clock now, but I can't seem to figure out how to make it come out anymore. It doesn't show up in the app list, and when I go to manage apps and scroll to Launcher Pro, the launcher I'm currently using, it doesn't show up as set as any defaults (which is odd, shouldn't it at least be my home screen default?), so there's nothing for me to clear out.
When your kickstand is in use and you are in landscape mode pull down the notifications menu. From there you will be able to access the widget clock and change your default preferences.
Turns out Widget Clock only works if you're running the default Motoblur launcher. I was running Launcher Pro, and the notification never pops up.
That's a shame.

Try using Home Switcher to go back to MotoBlur and then activate the kickstand.

Yup, that's how I discovered the root of the problem. Pretty awkward way to use this feature in the long run, though. I'm just going to be turning off the feature.

I'm using GLEX and my Widget Clock works fine on kickstand and in my HD dock. If it doesn't automatically pop up, hit your home button and it should switch to the clock.

disable full screen mode on ADW Launcher

I am on CM7 RC1.3 (previously was on RC1) and I have had the same problem with them on both. My main dock randomly will disappear and the only way I can get it back is to restart my phone. I think it is when i open an app that request full screen access then the main dock bar never comes back. But I can't fine anywhere to disable full screen.
It's an extra place for you to put shortcuts. Disable "Hidden Dockbar" in ADW Settings if you don't want it. Either that, or play around with it until you get used to it. Dragging up from the bottom opens it and dragging down (from the top of where the dock WOULD be) closes it. It takes some people a little bit to get used to it but it is a useful feature.

well i want the main dockbar to always be there. i dont want it disappearing when i go back to the home pages. there is a "close dockbar" option which says "auto-close dockbar after app-launch" when checked. i dont want to see the dockbar when an app is open, but i do want it to be there when i close the app. but i have that disabled anyways, so that shouldnt be an issue. i did a search and saw i am not the only person that has had this problem. but options they took to fix it, i dont have for various reasons. (i.e. CM6, tablet)
the swipe up and swipe down gestures are set to none also.

Yes. I understand. What I am describing is not "auto-close dockbar". It is the Hidden Dockbar as described.
Eh, I don't use it but I just installed it so I could be more descriptive of where the setting is.
Menu->Settings->ADW Settings->UI Settings
Under the "Hidden Dockbar" section uncheck "Dockbar".

Those are completely different than what I am referring to. If the "Hidden Dock" is enabled then swiping up from the bottom of the main dockbar will open it and swiping down from the top of the extended dockbar (imagine where the top of the main dock bar would be if it was there) will close it. I'm not sure how to explain this any better.
I'm sure you can set a hide/unhide the Hidden Dock as a icon shortcut, softkey shortcut, and/or swipe gesture as well if you want to keep it and that is more convenient.
Ok, I had checkmark on Dockbar. I took it off. I'll let you know how it works. Thanks.

No rotating to landscape mode

When ever I turn my phone horizontally while on the homescreens it doesn't turn into landscape mode (I already made sure that in settings-display the "auto-rotate screen" option is marked). The weird thing is that is does auto-rotate if I'm not on the home screens (say, if I'm on the web, or checking out a photo, or on the market, etc).
Any thoughts?
double post
The launcher is not compatible with landscape, would be my first thought. Try a different launcher (Go Launcher rotates, if set to do so in its own preferences).
Silly me. I had selected the option on the SGS2's settings but not on the launcher. Thanks! Everything is working now.

Are you using TouchWiz? I don't use it myself, and I'm just curious for future reference.

[Q][View] Select launcher

I installed the ADW Ex launcher on my view with HC. I pressed the home button and the screen dimmed but a box to select the home launcher never appeared. I went to manage applications and was going to clear the defaults for htc sense. However, the clear defaults is grayed out. Any ideas how I can get the launcher selection to come back?

yes, settings/applications/ADW .... clear default
There is also an app for that called Home Switcher.
if the screen greys out when you go to select a default for any action just rotate the screen. when you rotate the screen it will re-draw the screen and show the box. That is a known bug in HC that I believe was fixed in ICS

thanks for this. went a little nuts trying to figure out why i couldn't change the default launcher.

Launcher choice

I didn't like how the stock launcher only gave you only a few applications to choose from on the top screen when you were in 'T' mode. I played around with Nova Launcher and changing the options to auto rotate seems to work pretty well.
Let me know how you did it. And if you came up with a better solution.
1. Too screen
2. Bottom screen
3. Top screen (app drawer)
@kaluna00
Same here.
I always select auto rotate for any phone w/Nova Launcher.
Another tool I use is Ultimate Rotation Control (Pro) from the Google Play Store. It has a basic default selection & you can customize on a per-app basis.
Been a good while since the app was last updated, but, it's still 100% functional.
This phone would be a perfect candidate for having Nova Launcher as the default home UI, as Razer has with their two phones. Naturally, it'd need a bit of tweaking for the 2nd display, but, anything other than the stock Launcher would be an improvement.

It allows for orientation on a per-app basis.
Basically, you select a default orientation, whatever that may be (say, automatic). Then, if you want certain apps to remain in something else, say, portrait mode, you can select that app to ignore the default orientation & remain locked in portrait mode.
So, the app isn't really necessary for Nova Launcher, but, a nice tool to have for the rest of your apps.
After a factory data reset. I was playing more with the stock launcher. Hi believe it is a little bit snappier. I'm not a fan of the carousel on the top screen. However, you can swipe up and get into the app drawer on the top screen. You also still can double tap to turn the screen off. Without going into an administrator lock where fingerprints do not work (you need to use the pattern or your code)
Microsoft Launcher is good and feels native if you aren't a fan of carousel mode. The icons will just rotate in landscape. Worth checking out.
Ruthless launcher works great and allows you to change the bottom screen launcher as well ;3

Testing out ruthless launcher. Mostly like it. I'll play with it for a few days and let you know how it sticks.
I liked ruthless launcher, but it would not allow me to double tap off the screen unless I gave it elevated rights. I did so, but after you double tap the screen off it locks the phone and you can't activate the fingerprint sensor without hitting the power button. I also noticed that if you double tap to lock the phone and then swing it open the second screen is still unlocked and you have access to the phone. That was the deal killer for me. Back to the stock launcher.
To get out of Carousel mode when you winging the phone open. Just swipe up and you will get to your app drawer
This is my screen setup using
KLWP and the Wing launcher

Allow ruthless to be set as a second screen app. On the second screen select ruthless launcher. Then, swipe up and hold to bring up recent apps. Then pin the ruthless launcher. You should be set after that
