[Q] very hot back - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. the top corner on the back o my tab gets extremely hot while the screen is on. like Very hot, on the back about an inch and 1/2 below the volume rocker. is this a known issue or should i take it back to bestbuy and get it exchanged?

Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

Thats where the processor is. Are you overclocked? Mine gets warm, but I believe that's because I have it in a case and there is no room for heat dissipation. Heat will kill electronics, so make sure that it does not get too hot.

I would return it, it does not sound normal... I have my unit overclocked at 1.4ghz (on demand 216-1400) and been playing PSX (playstation emulation uses a lot of cpu power) games on it all day... It doesn't get "hot", I haven't even notice it even get slightly warm and I have mine in a case.

ok, next question. how do i unroot so they dont give me a hard time?

Unfortunately this is just another consumer with his or her mind poisoned by companies who sell worthless cooling products for electronic devices.
It requires an education in electrical engineering to understand what is "hot". You cant simply feel the back of your device and guess that it is hot when you have no idea what the temperature even is and when you have no idea what temperature is hot for electronics.
Chips can run at 80c which is getting close to water boiling. If the back of your device does not burn your skin to a blister then NO, your device is not running hot or anywhere near warm.
Education is key to understanding our reality.

doesnt burn my skin or blister, no. but it is hot enough to the point where i cant hold it in that spot because it feels like its going to. its like putting your hand on xbox that had just been run for 10 hours straight

As stated before, the tegra 2 does not produce anywhere near the power dissipation to overheat even when overclocked.
I have to ask again, what is the temperature of the back of the unit?

i'm trying to remember how hot my EVO got last summer around when i saw that bright spot on the screen issue .. i want to say above 100F i would start paying closer attention.
right now mine is sitting at 88.8F after charging over night. i'll keep watching and see how the temperature ranges. i really haven't paid much attention.
i know gaming can be intensive and run up the temperature. on the CDMA version, a weak signal can also run up the temperature.
i haven't heard too much about over heating issues with this device yet. hopefully they weren't be many issues!
edit: i used the free batterylife widget from the android market to monitor the temperature. idk how *accurate* it is but it seems to function pretty decently over the last few android devices i've owned.
I live in Texas and we have this thing they are calling a "Heat Dome" that has been over Texas for quite a while now. 20+ days in a row of 100* degree temps Anyway, I work outside (god help me) and my 3vo does just fine. I never really looked to see the temps it is reaching, just know that it works just as good as when I am inside.
On another note I heard on the radio yesterday that obama's hatred of Texas due to its thriving economy and not falling to obama's deliberate destruction of the U.S. Economy, or joining the rest of the U.S. in 18% unemployment that the "Heat Dome" may be created by the government to "punish" Texas for what we are and what we stand for! This Heat Dome has been sitting primarily over Texas the whole time it has been around, makes you wonder. Oh, we also voted for McCain, not that he would have been much better than obama, LOL. 2012 can not come soon enough!!!

Prime cooling

Does anyone here have any insight into how the prime is cooled? I am wondering if the backplate is being utilized at all to assist in cooling?
Is the soc facing the screen or the backplate?
As much as the backplate may interfere with wireless signals, it may be able to help in other places..
Also, while it may be minor, decreasing temperature at a particular clock speed and voltage will decrease power draw on full load. Maybe able to squeeze a few more minutes during gameplay.

for wanting to know which way the Soc is facing. just look at the GPS teardown thread. I know I posted tons of pix in there that'll answer that. can't remember which way it was facing.
The tear downs have like a grounding ribbon going over the chip and it provides some of the cooling, or at least that's what the tear downs call it.
Has anyone taken the motherboard out yet? I am waiting on my thermal paste to implement a custom cooling solution but do not want to break the motherboard in the process.
Thanks.

Why do u want a custom cooling solution? This thing ain't getting very hot lol..
Someone has been reading about the new iPad temp reports
I'd like to be able to dissipate heat better. The Prime generally stays pretty cool, but when running at strictly 1.6 GHz for about 5-7 minutes mine can get as high as 39-42 C. But it's not like I ever have a reason to actually run it at the maximum for any extended amount of time
*EDIT:
Well, something must have been off when I did my OG test, because doing the same thing I used to (set SetCPU to 1600/1600, ran AnTuTu Tester battery test) I'm 10 degrees cooler than I was. Something that allowed the use for all 4 cores must have been running in the background at the time without me noticing. As soon as I find a good way to monitor temp while doing other things I'll engage all 4 cores and see if that brings me back up to the same levels.

Heat is a by-product of current (resistance). Decreasing the temperature has no impact on power draw. There's no convection cooling, thus no fan to draw power in order to cool the internals.
I'm all about efficiency myself, so it's cool you want to do this, but just make sure you're going to end up with the results you want.

Maybe I am misunderstanding?
Look, I have a cpu that requires say 1.4v at 60c to perform at 3.6 ghz.
I then put that same cpu under water cooling. It can now run at 1.35v at 40c to perform 3.6ghz.
1.4v x (???)amps = (???)watts
1.35v x (???)amps = (???)watts
As temperature increases it becomes inherently harder for electrons to flow therefore requiring additional voltage. Additional voltage alone increases power. Now as the temp goes up more current is required to perform the same task which means even MORE power. Temperature means exponential power draw.
I'm not arguing this is just what I have learned by surfing pcper for the last 6 years or so, if I am wrong please let me know why so I can feed my hunger for hardware knowledge =)

Like I said, I would love to lower temps so i can run over 1.7ghz. My prime runs decently hot at this frequency.
Also, I will not be stopping with cpu, I need moar gpu power too! Rawr!
Edit: I suppose I didn't say I wanted to run higher but yeah, I want to overclock this b?!# until it melts. Tegra 3 on phase change anyone? Lol.
Also it seems like its going to be crazy easy to help with the temps once I get the motherboard off.

Just the SetCPU widget on the homescreen, and AnTuTu Tester shows you the temperature when you test the battery. Right now Tester only uses two cores though.

Right, only cores 0 and 1 (of course I don't know about the Ninja core, no app will ever be able to see it) get fired off using the AnTuTu Tester app.
Soon as I find a taskbar "widget" to display temp (or optic76 updates TabletCPUMonitor to display it) then I'll go about stressing all 4 cores at once. Now that I think about it, SetCPU has some configurable stress tests huh? *hops off to have a look*
*EDIT:
Actually, no, no it does not
>Does anyone here have any insight into how the prime is cooled? I am wondering if the backplate is being utilized at all to assist in cooling?
Metal-clad units like the iPad and Prime have slightly better cooling, simply because the aluminum transfers heat better than plastic. But the shell isn't directly used as a heatsink per teardowns.
That would actually be a bad idea, as while internal temp may be lowered, surface temp would drastically increase. Given that the surface is in direct contact with your hands/skin, it can cause great discomfort and possibly burns. Ever touched a heatsink?
There is no good cooling solution for tablets/handhelds because of the lack of space.
I'd like to see some screened grilles/grates and tiny little dyson fans or something lol

Yes I have touched a heatsink. In fact I've touched, cut, modded, complained about, and raved about heatsinks. I'm all about the thermals. What your saying makes perfect sense and all but I've already considered all of the above. When I unlocked my prime I had one goal in mind. Overclock it until it melts! Why? This is how I have fun with my toys, I enjoy it!
Now the facts: yes it will be hotter, but it will dissipate quicker due to better/ more efficient thermal transfer. So that means it will cool down quicker, while also taking strain off other internal components such as power regulators due to a much lower ambient temperature. In turn this will allow for cleaner power delivery and hopefully higher cpu and gpu clocks.
Plus....all the cool kids are getting burned by their tablets. See: new ipad.

I think you got your units mixed up. The reports are that it's heating up to just over 100 F.
edit: I just noticed that you caught your error.
ya the original news report i heard had it mixed up, but still thats pretty hot, i wouldnt want to be holding that, or accidentally fall asleep when a game is running, might cause some damage
this is the beginnings of a huge issue down the road for new ipads. watch what i tell you. those devices won't last long St all constantly running at those high temps. people will get sick of their device shutting down on them and message popping up saying device needs to cool down. one thing about apple fans, they love to complain when there is an issue and they will let it be known. so expect this to continue to get major tech press coverage as time goes on. this could eventually become a fire hazard if its left on plugged in. device runs so hot and causes a fire or shortcircuit the wall adapter, which could cause a fire. everyday at those temps and new Ipad chips won't last longer than a few months before burning out or burning some other component up. some even reported half of the glass getting very hot to the touch. one reason could be because apple is pumping 2x the power into display to keep it running. it uses a very un-efficient way of back lighting the display. I saw it in a tech article where they broke down new Ipad display saying its good but far from perfect. Samsung has to jump through hoops to make that tricky display work.
Well, I exchanged my iPad 2 for the kids at local BB. Upgraded to iPad 3.
Few days of use and my little girl complained to me that the it actually burnt her. I guess she had it laying on her lap.

Wait a minute. A hundred degrees F? So a whole degree and a half higher than normal body temperature.
Is this a problem in devices the size of tablets? I'm new to tablets, but that's nothing compared with the old 939 CPU in my tower.

seriorously? that is crazy. you should've sued apple for it and let all the news media know so it can get serious press on it...lol. time for apple to be exposed. things are heating up on this issue...lmao
Ya, it can be uncomfortable for some. My prime runs nice and cool reguardless what games im playing.
I gladly take a reduced screen resolution for increased performance, not to mention the increased heat is going to cause damage to the battery.
And there are some reviews where if you have it in direct sunlight and start something intense the increased heat from just being outside can cause it to shut down!
You might not think one or two degrees makes a difference but consider if you have a body temp of 100F you likely feel really sick. If your body temp hits 116 like these ipads are getting, you are likely dead.
Anyways, i hope you all had a good smile at this, too much negitivity towards the prime on this forum hopefully this lightened the mood a little
100 degree must mean Celsius as most cpu run between 50 to 80c. 100c would be out of control lol. If it is burning her lap its more than 100f. Although, if the case is running 100f without proper cooling the cpu would run MUCH MUCH higher.

Ya, the CPU is likely much higher. The reports I have seen are saying the case itself is reaching 116 degrees F (specifically after running Infinity Blade for 45 minutes). Also, under normal usage the iPad 3 runs 10 degrees hotter than the iPad 2.
I can totally see this blowing up in apple's face (I can only hope). This may result in a recall depending on how it plays out. Because it's not just the heat thing, they are saying it is drawing so much juice while playing a game for example that the battery won't even charge when plugged in. And as others have mentioned, heat and electronics don't mix well.
I don't want to start Apple bashing, but the list of problems with the 'New' iPad put the TP problems into perspective.
There are reports that the battery won't charge:

& there are WiFi problems:

It seems that many devices can have (widespread?) issues. Unfortunately, some people on these forums seem to be exaggerating the Primes problems and it becomes very difficult to properly evaluate the situation. The problems with the Prime have been magnified to a hysterical level, I wonder if the same will happen with the iPad...?
I hope the problem with the heat is a result of the GPU. That put all of these people to the rest who complain about Tegra 3's performance. It's easy to build a big chip with such a performance. But it's complicated to control the heat and power consumption.
Icook..best seling Ipad app
Now I just have to get an Ipad 3...cant wait for the first developer to make an app called Icook, can you imagine taking a morning break from playing games, then turning the Ipad over and frying some eggs and bacon on it for breakfast!! Android has lost son??!!!

it will. Asus and prime was ever as popular as apple. so our issues were only major to us. it isn't like our issues get national t.v. press coverage. anything apple does is under a microscope. so when the mess up, they do it big. plus apple complainers are some of the loudest voices heard. this will soon enough generate t.v. coverage. I didn't even hear about the battery not charging up issue. SMH. so the reality behind new Ipad launch is really starting to show. apple will have it worse because they sell in such large numbers. meaning huge amounts of people likely to have this issue. I smell another lawsuit coming apples way. they deserve it since they always want to patent troll on smaller companies.

I heard a spokesman for Asus say that there was less than 1% of Primes that had reported problems. That's not to say that only 1% actually HAVE problems (my GPS doesn't work well enough for navigation, but I don't care because I never intended to use it for that) but less than 1% of Prime customers are dissatisfied with their devices. That seems about right to me, given that almost all of the complaints that I see in these forums seem to be from 1-2 people who got bad Primes.
To put that into perspective, I read a quote from an Apple spokesperson who said that "87% of (new) iPad customers are reporting no problems." That means that 13% are reporting problems. That is ridiculous.

roms or mods to reduce heat while gaming

UPDATE:
Ok i just figured out its only one specific area that get warm, in the top right corner. when in landscape mode with power button facing up, this is a non issue as i simply flip the phone to the other side play my games
the back right corner gets a tad warm thats also a non issue and normal for most phones while gaming however I use the included sony case and feel nothing at all.
Love this phone, Iv had a great gaming experience. this will replace my nvidia shield as pc games stream perfectly full speed too. (just some mapping issues with droidmote and HID controllers needs a fixes)

As this is a thin device the screen gets extremly hot while gaming, is there any rom/mod to workaround this that anyone knows offp?

Well the only way to reduce heat is to downclock the processor, which means you need to root and download setcpu. But ftom my experience, it is not as hot as my previous razr maxx, and the good thing about this phone is there's a throttle control to prevent cpu overheat so no overly hot surface.

what I notice is that the heat is not consistent Some HD games (Conduit, Ravensword) dont cuz much heat and are reasonable, Novaa 3 causes alot and with MC4 the heat is inconsistent.

Yeah usually the more complex the game is, the hotter it will go. But seems like Sony capped it around 60C max so if the temp reaches there, the CPU will throttle.

What's extremly hot according to you? Just to have a scientific perspective.
I don't experience excessive heat, playing deathtrigger 2, gta3, real racing 3, candy crush
OP, are you gaming while the phone is charging? If yes, don't do that.
I'm not the biggest mobile gamer out there, but i have no issues with heat when i play Riptide GP2 and other GPU intensive games.

Even though I haven't played much I used setcpu and lowered the max from 2150 -> 1190.
All new phones gets hot in the CPU area. I guess it's impossible to design a thin phone and not get some kind of drawback.
I think due to the glass back of this device, the heat is quickly radiated to the ambient. I've an acer a700 sometimes it get so hot its not comfortable to place your fingers over there.
When playing games you should remove any casing, it works like an insulation. You will end up in a vicious heating cycle.

I don't have the phone yet, but all the reviews have said it does make a difference in long term performance. I think it's supposed to keep things about 5°C cooler and reduces/eliminates thermal throttling. Doesn't sound gimmicky to me.
In the reviews that I have seen, that showed the backside of the cooling fan, it doesn't look like there is actually any ports that directly interface with the unit itself. But rather, from what I have read, it keeps your hands cooler and not as sweaty. So, maybe that is where the 5 degree difference comes in. If your hands are cooler and not transferring heat to the unit, then that would make sense why it would help keep it cooler by 5 degrees.

Yeah, it's the surface temp that goes down 5°C, not internal. I haven't seen any tests on internal temps, but several reviews have shown a definite increase in the amount of time before thermal throttling kicked in, and not at all in some cases.

I read somewhere the tested temp drop with the cooling fan was something like 5C to 10C on the back of the phone and 2C to 4C internal temp drop.
Allright thanks a lot guys. Maybe I'll be getting the Acc after all.
This Active cooling fan doesn't drain much battery, it's like you don't have it at all.
It's surprisingly lightweight, it doesn't make the phone heavier at all.
It comes with adhesive hard-rubber cushions you can put under it, to make the phone stand alone, just like having a pair of shoes on its feet.
The writing "Republic of gamers" on is is also RGB-backlighted, and it's really bright!
The cooling stand extends itself for half centimeter, so you can attach it easily on the phone.
And it does the job! Also, keeping your fingers refreshed, neither too much nor too little, so they won't sweat.
Above all, keeps the phone cooled enough. A must have accessory, for Asus ROG Phone 2!
I love the aero cooler, it works and cools your fingers at the same time.
