[Q] camera hardware not working when device is on standby - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
On my AT&T Atrix 4G, with Alien-4 as well as cherryblur ROM - when the device is put on standby by using the power button, camera hardware stops working. Is there any way, using any hack or custom kernel etc. to keep the camera hardware awake when device is on standby? I have heard that even Droid X has the same issue.
On the Samsung phones I used (Galaxy 3 / Galaxy S / Galaxy Ace), camera hardware works even when the device is on standby.
Any help is much appreciated
thanks

probably for battery saving reasons... is there a reason you need this?

It could also be there for the security reasons to prevent the user filming secretly....

Yeah, it is to record criminals and corrupt officers. It doesn't happen when the device is being charged, so it is likely designed to save battery.
Is there any way to make the phone believe it is being charged when it is actually not? It is a rooted device.

Not sure.. there are spy cams available in market.. just remember all state and federal laws concerning this, as you can be jailed.

[Q] What caused my sudden overheat & battery drain today?

Hello,
I've had my GS II for about a week, and the battery life has been pretty stellar, except for days where I work at the office. For some reason, there, the battery drains at about 2x the rate than in other areas. A very similar thing happened with my Captivate, but the battery lasts longer with the GS II.
However, today, at around 1PM, my phone started heating up so that it was hot to the touch, and the battery drained 60% in about 1.5 hours. Something went terribly wrong. And even plugged in, it was draining faster than it could charge!
How can I find out what happened? I don't want this to happen again.
The only thing I did was listen to a podcast with BeyondPod, but I do that every day at work over lunch. So, nothing new in my utilization.
Any ideas appreciated!
Thanks,
Jon

Thanks, but GPS was not on. Neither was WiFi. Just Bluetooth. It's the same settings I have every day at work, because Tasker sets my settings automatically based on cell tower location.

If you mean the bars beneath the battery chart, the signal bar was 100% green from left to right. Is that what you mean?
No, the screen before that...it will say display, android OS, android system, cell standby, etc.. what percent does it say for android OS?

I had a similar experience today. I was talking on the phone when the top of the phone got really hot. Like it hurt my ear to hold the phone against it. And then the phone rebooted. Since then it's been running phone. Need to figure out what caused it though. Might be a similar issue. But my battery life has been pretty good though. Can easily make it through a day with moderate to heavy use.
I am running CM 7.1. Not sure if that had anything to do with it. But even if it did, there is no way I am going back to stock.

Unfortunately, AOS often falsely reports high. Sometimes high AOS usage is fine, sometimes it's not.
I've gotten some of my best battery life with AOS at 60%.
Can't tell what happened to you without some statistics.

Yeah, this sounds very similar to what happened to me, but with stock ROM.
Two follow-on questions:
1. If it's ROM-independent, then could it be something in the hardware that's short-circuiting? Like... the cellular chipset, or perhaps the modem firmware?
2. Can you explain what about CM 7.1 is so superior to the stock rom, which I'm finding pretty fantastic at the moment?
Thanks,

Sh1t happens. That's the way it was with multiple Windows Mobile phones I had in the past and it is obviously the way it is with multiple Android phones I have now. Usually a quick reboot of the phone will resolve the problem. As long as it didn't happen again persisitently, you are fine.
The cause is somewhere some app or service was stuck in a bad place that uses a lot of CPU or data or both. This will cause phone heats up and battery darin faster. Unless you have full dev environment and logging on the phone, it is virtually impossible to track it down.

Yeah, but does this kind of thing happen to iPhones and WinPho phones? Just curious. I am trying to convince friends & family that with the GS II, Android has finally reached parity with iOS. Perhaps not quite yet... ??
i never had battery drain but once in a while I do notice my phone gets hot on the back cover in between the SGS logo and the camera while I'm using it. If I put it down for a bit, it cools off. I figured it was just hot from use and I never thought anything more of it.

What make you think GS2 is any better than other Android phones in this regard? Anyone can make a mistake or two in programming and it is impossible to write bug free code.
Remember, latest Android Gingerbread OS is 2.3.7 and we are at 2.3.4. There are a lot of bug fixes (and new bugs) in each incremental release from Google alone. On top of that you have Samsung's customization code and various apps you installed.

It does happen to iPhones for sure. We switched from blackberry devices to the iPhone, at work, three months ago. We had five different devices experience similar heat and battery issues. The cause is typically from apps or services that sync with online data.

From what I've read about the Deep Idle Mod on the Nexus S, it's not necessarily a "feature" or "capability" that's listed for the hardware. The way it works (as far as I understand) is to completely shut off all of the idle functions of the phone while the phone sleeps (normally the battery is still supplying to many of the phone's functions while in deep sleep). It was a complete failure at first, as many phones would not wake up from deep sleep, but they've tweaked it to work pretty well (I've flashed it on a Nexus S 4G). I believe that it has to be implemented for our hardware in order to work, rather than our hardware specifically needing the capability to support it.
I'm already down to about 1.6% per hour screen off on LTE so I'm not sure there's any real demand for this. If that's not good enough, I turn it off.

Really poor battery life / phones heating up

Hello,
Well I've got really bad battery life. I tried calibration but it hasn't worked. Does anyone know how I can locate the source of the problem?

You have the screen on permanently.... it is THE largest user of battery in a phone, always. And OLED screens when displaying bright and light images use masses of juice.
And your phone never sleeps.
No idea what the hell you are doing, but it isn't a video player... it's a phone.
The image tells me your Display is always on and it isnt in sleep mode.
Did you play some games and listen to music ?

Hi guys,
Thanks for your replies. Thing is, when using the phone, even when doing simple things, the battery decreases drastically faster than before. I am also using a extended battery.
Are there any other things, apart from brightness and turning off Wifi, GPS, that I can do to improve battery life?

No... if you use the phone with the screen on for 3 hours solid.
And I agree, the screen was on the majority of the time but still, the battery life is decreasing more than before
Use the app Better Battery Stats to see if your phone has any other background processes running aside from what you expect it to. Uninstall/disable the offending apps then try to do your thing again.
Keep in mind as well that ICS uses more battery in general vs Gingerbread though, so that's another factor.
You can try flashing modem for your region, it could fix your heating issue.

It's getting hot and draining because of the screen on time, not the ROM.
The screen uses the same power irrespective of the ROM. Only brightness and screen content will affect it.
Download "Watchdog Task Manager Lite" turn on the monitoring and wait and check the stats, if you have an app that is misbehaving, un-install it.
Most battery issues are due to that.
Hope it helps.
Flash modem from your region, means the version of modem that came when you bought the phone.
Example, when I'm on stock ics / cm9 it gets real hot near camera when I use edge.
Flashing my GB modem fixes that issue.
Also it's easier to flash what you have already used instead of finding the correct one.

I see your image shown that your device has been froze somer times. Maybe you should try changing the kernel. Hope can fix your problem.
Have you 3 not read any of the above? Look at the screenshot. It's screaming the reason at you. Nothing stops the display consuming power and this big one really uses power.

Poor battery because its awake
you get poor battery life because as you can see on the graph, the phone has been awake all the time as well as the screen, the screen is a big battery leecher, when i first got my phone and i used it for like 2 hours with no apps, the screen drawed almost 40% battery life, so if you want to increase battery life i suggest you to change your settings so your screen turns off automatically

We have two S3 phones, and we have same issue with both of them.
If you enable power saving option, you cannot see email which is composed in HTML (stock e-mail client). Account is hooked to MS Exchange, but I thing that's not important here.
If you disable power saving, everything works.
android version: 4.0.4
Kernel: 3.0.15-671647-user
Build number: IMM76D.I9300XXALF2
More than likely not a bug but a power saving feature you should only be using power save mode when you really need to save power, don't expect the phone to work properly when you have it enabled.

hm, How it that helping than if making my device unusable? That have no sense. I can live with only one core, 600 Mhz, low light etc, but I want it to work as expected. It's like you have a car that would not open door if low on fuel?
I can't see any real power savings.
If your phone sleeps, the pegasusq scheduler will go down to 200MHz (or 100 with Siyah) and disable 3 of the 4 cores, if the horsepower is needed it ramps up the clock speed and hotplugs the other cores again.
So in fact all power saving does is reduce your maximum available power, luminosity, ... If you take care not to have apps such as Skype running in the background 24/7 you should be fine anyway.
Most of the drain comes from 3G anyway where power saving cannot do anything. There are other methods to "fix" (bypass) the 3G drain
It's all ok, but does your phones behave the same way? That was the original question. This is obviously a bug and need to be reported. I just need some confirmations.

Complete Guide to Improving Battery Life

The G2 has a fantastic battery already, why not make it even better?
I like to see how far I can push this phone's battery. In no way does that mean that you need too as well, but for those of you that do want a few more hours or another day, I'm happy to share what I've learned.
After I've spent time learning the quirks of this phone, and most of its respective ROMs, I've come up with quite a few tricks for improving battery life, some specific to this phone, some just in android general. I now get average 3-4 days battery life, when I use the phone quite often during the day all day long.
It is your personal preference on how much of android's background services that you use compared to apps. This is only suggestions for the users that want to improve battery life.
Heres some of the simplest questions you can ask yourself when you go through the settings center:
Do I really need this feature enabled? Do I use it often? Even if I do occasionaly use it, is it that much of a pain to just turn on when I need it?
Do I really need GPS on 24/7? How often do I really use GPS?
How many apps do I need running in the background?
Do I need to keep autobright on, or keep the screen super bright?
That being said, here are some of the simple things that Ive done.
I keep everything off unless I use it every day.
I keep GPS off 24/7, I never use it.
Out of habit, I always close all apps.
I keep autobright off and keep the screen on 14 brightness. Unless Im right outside in the sun its easy to see, and if I am I can just turn it up with the quick setting.
Some of the more advanced stuff I do, that completely varies on your ROM:
Go through all the system apps and freeze anything you dont use. Example being the Picasa uploader (for me at least).
Leave as little system services running as you need. You wouldent believe how many unneeded services android runs. On the stock roms there are TWO location daemons running.
Currently Im using CleanROM, I switch between it and Cyanogen about once a week, just cant make up my mind on stability v. features, but on CleanROM, some of the stuff I have currently froze
Nearly anything involving Verizon, the carrier APKs are massive bloatware.
I disabled a lot of google services, some people may rely on these, personally I dont, the biggest two google apps I use are chrome and Gmail.
If your on a stock based ROM, disable the LG services you dont use. Textlink wastes a huge amount of power, as does QSlide.
(This applies alot more to carrier based roms than it does Cyanogen/AOSP, but even they do have a few unneccesary servcices.) Be careful when you are touching system services, if you dont know what one does, a google on its function is helpful.
Use a different launcher. Excluding the stock google launcher, most factory launchers are very inefficient, LG Home is no exception. Personally, I use SmartLauncher, a very light and very nice looking launcher with a fantastic layout. Nova I know is very light on resources aswell.
The more widgets you have cluttering your screen, the more power they will waste.
I can personally confirm myself that Kitkat based roms have incredible battery life after they settle in for a few days, the kernel level improvements brought with KitKat are very noticable. Currently Gummy Rom and three CM11 builds exist for KitKat, why not give them a try?
If you have unusually high battery usage, check your wakelocks, and see what exactly is using all the power, and you can disable/turn it off and remove that battery drain.
On a final note, comeon guys turn your phones off at night. I have yet to hear a good reason to leave it running over night, all it does is waste power and most commonly let the notification light run for 8 hours. If you use your phone as a alarm, you could turn on airplain mode overnight.
These are just some of the things that I do, if you have any more suggestions, feel free to post them or message me, I'll be glad to add them to the list.
I do not own this device but whats the point of turning all the feature of your phone off just to get a couple more hours out of it just use it like you should and stop worrying too much...

I'll say this again, not everyone is aware of some of the lower level services that android runs that are completely pointless and cause a lot of wakelocks. GPS is not pointless, it uses for Facebook, navigation, weather update, yelp and a lot of apps.. what you deem is pointless is different than everyone...your reason to own a smartphone is seriously wrong in so many ways...just saying man but its your money.
Honestly people should just enjoy the phone rather than trying to make it last longer. If your phone can make it through the day then consider that a successful phone.
I assumed everyone used their phone as an alarm. I never turn my phone off subsequently.
Some nice hints for someone needing more battery; however, I disagree with your assertion that closing applications saves power. Assuming you need to open the application again it would make sense to leave the application running (idle) in cached ram.

It completely depends on how often said application is opened, and what it does while idle. I know out of hand while I'm at work I see several people with 3-4 games left open on their phone, this is more what I was reffering too.
