[Strange] Got a call on my touchpad today - TouchPad General

The phone on my touchpad started ringing today - odd since I hadn't paired it with anything. I answer and it is telling me my touchpad is infected and that I need to go to a website - of which ofcourse I didn't.
Anyone else have this happen before?

Skype? But I don't know how the spammer would know it was on a touchpad.

Nope. It was an actual phone call, but clearly using the internet. But the entire UI and everything was the actual built in phone function of the Touchpad.
I thought I was going crazy, and if no one else has had this happen, then maybe I am going crazy. hah

either you were installing things that were shady or this just isn't true.

wow you too?!?
I got 3 calls all in a row while I was at work. Got home and saw 3 missed. Was stumped and had no idea what it was.

The calls are coming through Skype. It's actually a fairly common scam as of late. They ask you to go to a website, connect remotely, they get all angry with you until you pay $150 to fix it.

I received a call once as well. My sister received complains about it too.

You two aren't the only ones. I also received one. However I was sure it came through Skype and not some call feature. It was crazy. I kinda had a laugh afterwards about receiving a spam call through Skype. Uh oh..
sent from my brainwaves...can you hear that?

So, obviously these are scams. BUT how scams reach you? Or the tab users are tracked?

My guess is they are just calling Skype accounts. If you had it running on you computer you might get one as well. Just a guess though.
I have mine set to only allow calls from known contacts. Well, on my PC as I have to wait 6 - 8 weeks to get my Touchpad.
PS I HATE spammers. I wish I could track then down with a Predator Drone!

+1 To what he said. Calls are rare, but I used to get added all the time by girls wanting to chat. "I'm married, goodbye spammer." apparently means "Please send me links to your private sites."
I'm with you on spammers, but more so on scammers. Right now the African scamming ring is taking existing listings for houses on craigslists, copying all the details, then relisting them... When you inquire, they say that they have moved overseas and want you to send them money before they will let you inside... or take an online credit report... VERY frustrating when you are looking for a home with your wife and baby!!!

drunk texting blocker app wanted

Hey all,
I heard there is an app that you can select contacts that you do not want to text when your'e drunk. Then when you try to text them you have to solve a mathematical question or some kind of question...
I found the title for it for iphone a while ago (forgot now), but I want the android version for it.
Anybody knows the title for it?
Cheers
Dude, seriously, who the **** uses their phone when they're drunk? I love when people say "I got drunk and wiped my phone" or stuff like that. Ridiculous. Just put a complicated ****ing password on your phone before you go out drinking. Done.

If you're rooted, use CyanogenMod 7...it has "Phone Goggles" which restricts outgoing text messages and calls after a certain time and yeah you need some complicated stuff to prove you're sober before you can call and stuff.

Who are you to say who should use their phone when and where?
I am not wiping my phone or anything, I should just sometimes think twice if I send a text.

I didn't tell anyone else how should he use his phone. I'm just saying that stuff like those are pure bull****. I never encountered a drunk man trying to text someone, usually they talk nonsense, puke or sleep.

Then you clearly did not go out when you were in college in a city with 40000 students going out. (And even outside that, how hard is it to imagine texting people in what bar they are, or to imagine texting a person you like/hate faster when you drank a couple?)
But this discussion is beyond the scope of this thread, each entitled to their own opinion and habits.

Not too long ago I had a drunken brainwave on how to fix something which involved wiping something from mounts and storage in recovery, I knew I should have waited till morning but I felt invincible.
Ended up formatting my sd so Yeh it does happen its just a good job I know what I'm doing when sober, all the important stuff is always backed up contacts music photos etc, took me about 3 hours to get if back up to scratch.

Got a call from Asus regarding the a GPS Extension kit

Just received a call from Asus, I missed the call, but they left a voicemail. Call seems to come from California I believe, 510 area code.
Voicemail stated it should be available April 16th, and to expect its arrival in three weeks. Just wanted to keep you guys in the loop. Anybody else get a call?
Was really surprised to actually get a call and not just an email or something.
I just got the call too. Nice surprise

Did u ask them for the kit or they just call?
Same call - and a real person, not a machine. Amazing service - kudos to Asus.
LOL, I submitted a support ticket on the site and was told by e-mail that TF201 USB does not support GPS function? I sent them back telling them no one said anything about USB and posted links to XDA and engaget. Sounds like some training may be needed.
I was hoping for more of a positive 1st impression from asus support.
The lady on my voicemail said she was calling in regards to the gps extension kit I registered for online. I just registered a few days ago when the dongle story "leaked"

I registered my Transformer Prime a few days ago, I do remember leaving my cell phone number, so they just called while I was in my clinical and left the voicemail.
Not sure if you didn't hear, but Asus is offering ALL Prime owners a GPS extension kit, it just so happens that after I registered, there was an notice on screen regarding the GPS extension kit that they would be sending out to Prime owners.
If you haven't already, register your prime online and you might see the same notice. I say might because I read somewhere on the web that they have taken down the notice. My guess is that it gets official on the 16th, and you can then call Customer Support and give them your information so they can send you one.

Yea I registered yesterday, and didn't see anything about a GPS dongle. I will take it, even though I will never use it If anything,it may help resale of the Prime when the time comes.
Either way, thanks for the heads up. I get a LOT of wrong numbers calling, so now I'll think twice before declining.
Just got a call, they left a VM (I dont answer calls from numbers I dont know).
Danny from Asus - GPS extension kit from April 16th forward for 3 weeks for delivery.

Actually, I am a pretty up guy but a pessimist by nature, I just call out BS no matter what & not the kind of guy that jumps on the bandwagon just because and so maybe, I come across like I am down or negative. Depends on the topic really - plus I got a fair # of posts, I doubt you have read them all
Anyway, I have to admit this phone call surprised me, positively. This is going to be a costly bunch of phones calls, shipping, and product to cover their booties - but, if that is what it takes to remedy the issue the best they can, good for them.
Also just got the call from Asus,
I had registered a few days ago, got the message about the GPS Dongle and registered for it also.
The Nice lady from Asus told me that the site was under construction when I registered for the GPS, and that they would honor that registration, and ship on the 16th!
So anyone that missed out/didn't get the message about the GPS Dongle, you should see the registration page on the 16th!
BTW, I wonder what color they will send.
I suspect the Serial # tells them your color, but do you think they even did colors or just defaulted to the silver. (I have champagne BTW).

Maybe it's just your picture then, it's cool, but can pass off as Oscar The Grouches' cousin from Sesame Street lol
Yes, it's a step in the right direction from them, most companies would avoid this due to the cost (free add on, plus phone calls when an email would of suffice) So let's see what they do next.
Since this will plug into the bottom connector will they have a connector for power to be applied? if someone gets human, they should inquire...

VZW Reps are oblivious

Not speaking about all reps. But most if not all I have encountered dont know
Sh0t. I call them about carrier billing. It is not working for me for some reason. They first want to check my imei/meid to see if my device and line support it. I am put on hold for 5 minutes and they come back stating they cant find a way for me to access these items. I tell them either on back under battery or in about phone under settings. They so OK, then ask me to read it. We proceed to featuers blocked on my line. They say the only thing blocked is the MBBN. I ask if that will block billing and he says I honestly dont know. I then ask him if I need to contact the FCC. He then asks "What is a FCC?" I say really... so then I have to explain to him what that is. Subject never gets resolved. Moral of this story, might not want to look to VZW for certain support info. Anyone else ever encounter a problem like this with VZW support.

A lot of techie stores are like this. The people working there know sqwak and then like to give people that do know stuff dirty looks. Whenever I'm in a Best Buy with my dad and a rep comes over we tell them we're fine and my dad always makes a joke like "I'm fine with him, he knows everything." The reps just glare me down. Most of them stand next to the info tag and read directly from it to the customer they're helping which is pretty sad.
They give jobs to 20 year olds that still say "axe" instead of "ask," use other slang/ghetto speak, and don't know the difference between two TVs besides one is LG and LCD the other is Sony and LED, but don't accept the 17 year old that goes to a prestigious high school in the area and who's resume shows tech experience.

Any sales experience? Pretty sure 6 months is required. I applied with 1 year of sales and IT experience and said no after they wanted to make me a cashier.
Best Buy is terrible anyway. I ordered the Collector's Edition of Diablo 3 at a store that was closing (found out 3 weeks after I ordered) and got an email that I needed to call them to change the store or ship it to my house. I called them 5 times and opened 2 cases. They couldn't get it changed or shipped to my house because of a glitch it the system. 2 days before the game came out they said they would "send it to the correct department for viewing" and yeah... never got it.
Verizon is terrible about knowing about their phones (in or out of the store). When I bought my Thunderbolt, the first rep said I didn't have a discounted upgrade (literally saw it on her little tablet thing that I did) so I went to the next rep and he didn't know how much internal storage their was. Needless to say, I've ordered online since then.

A friend of mine works at the Target Mobile kiosk; he literally knows crap-all about phones, owns an old smartphone he's never turned on, and whenever I'm there talking to him, I end up telling the customers more about the phones they look at than he does. Which is why I work in a car wash, and he tries to sell people tech he doesn't understand. It's practically a joke by now.

That's about what i was thinking.
A lot depends on the customers attitude.
A buddy of my Son's works at BestBuy. He and all his coworkers are great guys.
I stop in there all the time to shoot the breeze with those guys.
As long as you don't go in there with a "know it all" attitude, I find the BB guys are all helpful & a pleasure to talk to.
Some of them are tech geeks & others are not so knowledgeable but they don't pay sh!t so that's understandable.
I have had some great tech B.S. sessions concerning ROMs, locked bootloaders etc with these guys.

You are right about attitude as well. When I exchanged my DNA for my Note II, I could have berated and slammed the rep working with me that was telling me that KLP source was online, but instead I just lightly conversed with him and ignored it.
As a result, I was in and out quickly without any troubles.
Be careful how you treat people who are in a position to screw you. He could have easily nixed my unlimited data because I was getting in through a loophole.
About 10 years ago I worked for MS doing tech support. If a customer was a douche to me (or acted like a know it all), the resolution immediately became format and reinstall the OS. If they hung up on me, I put it in the notes and as a senior tech, others listened to me. However, if you were acting decent and respectful, I would fix your OS without reinstalling it and potentially losing data.

LOL, I can relate to that.
A number of years ago I did some tech support for HP Pavilion desktops.
Same thing, if the customer was a douche I would simply tell them the only fix was to run the recovery disc which was the same thing as a format and OS reinstall.
Some of the customers where great however and with them I occasionally spent hours on the phone with them, walking a novice through basic PC troubleshooting etc.

I work at a store and me and one other guy knows what we're talking about...so yeah you get about a 5 percent chance of the reps knowing anything, but as a guy said before me it's easier to be nice to the rep and probably get what you want than to be a Douche and end up getting nothing and possibly losing something.

No offense to anyone, but if you know enough to be here at XDA there should be no reason to step foot inside a store or call tech support. I buy all my gear online and If I call tech its because I already know it's gonna be a warranty replacement. I do the little song and dance on the phone, and a couple days later the phone shows up.

Yep, I really don't get the folks trying to buy stuff in stores or calling tech support. It's literally just someone reading a screen, there is no such thing as tech info you can't find yourself online and quicker than tech support. Sad but true.

The moral of this story is:
Be nice to the guys at the store or on the phone. They make less than you do, and they have to deal with a hundred people just like you every day. They don't owe you anything but if you're cool they'll help you out. Oddly enough this is a lesson which can be applied to human interactions everywhere in your life.

Most tech supports have a database of issues that have occurred in the past and how to fix them (not found on Google). There are also things that can happen that is beyond the user's control. I didn't get a delivery notice from Verizon for my Note 2 so I called them and found out there was a bug in the system and we had to resubmit it. If I had your way of thinking on the matter I would have never got my phone.
Just because many people here at XDA don't need tech support, doesn't mean the majority of people don't. You can see this in most mod/ROM threads. Lots of people ask questions because they have issues and the communuty helps them out (basically tech support). I work in IT and some people don't know anything about electronics eventhough they work with them everyday.
Not trying to attack you guys or anything, just trying to bring the real world to a tech forum since I help them every day.

I mean... the plan would be fairly cheap.... if it were just for me. But I'm on a family plan with my parents with 10GB of shared data (which we don't use much of, though it's nice to have).

I mean... the plan would be fairly cheap.... if it were just for me. But I'm on a family plan with my parents with 10GB of shared data (which we don't use much of, though it's nice to have).
But.... i REALLY want one of those kits! Too bad there probably isn't any way to gift the invite to someone who wants it.

I do think that you can give the invite to someone else. Just have to call them. I would like to have have an invite. Mine says 4 to 8 weeks out

You really shouldn't talk about things you know nothing about.
You CAN transfer your invite to someone else. You just need to call Fi Support and give them the email address of the person you want to transfer it to.

I'm a new Fi user. If they send me a welcome kit case, you can have it for the cost of shipping.

I'm sure you could find one on eBay.
Looks like they are going for at least $30 on eBay right now.

OT: spam calls

Sorry for the OT post, but I'm really curious. Over the past week both my wife and I have experienced a tremendous increase in spam calls, her worse than me. She gets 10+ a day, myself maybe 3. Never used to get any. Doesn't seem to be isolated to us either, friends saying that they are too. Both Android and Apple phones. WTF broke loose?
Not that I think it makes any difference, but I am a Nexus 6p running PN (best rom!) and she's stock S7.

I haven't had any at all. I'm not sure about other countries, but if you're in the US just add both of your numbers to the national 'do not call' list.

Thanks for the reply. For what it's worth, I signed up both of us years ago.
I thought maybe the limitations expired or something and opened the flood gates.

Do these calls come from the same numbers or different numbers each time and every day.
There are some cases where these calls are coming from legitimate numbers. What I mean is the spammers are making it look like the call is coming from a person's cell phone and some people call it back telling the poor person to stop calling but here she had nothing to do with it.

The robo calls are VOIP calls from overseas. If you have T-Mobile, you can enable Scam Block
Since I enabled it, only 2 spam calls have made it through.

I've had my landline and cell phones on the Do Not Call list for years but since March the number of spam calls has increased tremendously. Many of the callers appear to be the same entity calling from different numbers and area codes. I added them to the block list and am at least warned when the phone rings whether I should pick up the call or let it go to voicemail. Bad thing is on Android N and O (preview) when a call goes to voicemail the phone vibrates -- I haven't found a way to disable that vibration.

There is a solution if you are willing to pay for it. I use a service called NoMoRobo. Don't laugh, it works great and the whole family loves it. I use in on my home phone which is VOIP (Vonage) and so it is free. Free on just about any VOIP service. But.... mobile phones have to pay. There is an app already for IOS and a beta of the Android app you can get enroll in now.
I use a program called extreme call blocker. ITs a few $ but worth it!
