What should i do first? SGS - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i've recently bought SGS and i'd like to root it and upgrade my firmware into gingerbread, which is currently froyo. should i root it now? because i see that rooting makes my warranty void. but if i could guarrantee that rooting won't make my phone unusable, or any bad loss happened to it, i think i will root it and upgrade its firmware. they say rooting has some risk tho.
and if i root my phone and fail, Question:
1. can i bring everything back? 2. but if i couldn't start my phone after rooting failure, is still there a way to fix it?

all i want is to make my phone a lot faster, have outstanding features, and the one that transfers external memory into internal.. so i have 32gb microSD card, and 16gb internal memory, i will transfer like 20gb external into my internal so it will become 36gb internal memory.. and that would make my phone lot faster. and i don't know much about that superuser, busybox and that voodoo thingy. so like even if i open any game or like viewing the application tab from 1~5tabs there won't be any kind of lag happens. (especially when i minimize the application tab (5 tabs) it's so laggy D.

[Q] Updated to Bionix and will not boot

Hello,
My camera was not working so I backup my Bionix rom, my apps with titanium, etc. I did a new install of Bionix and then updated the OverStock v1.3 kernel using recovery screen. My phone will not boot up. I think I should have updated the kernel through an app that does that, so I messed up.
I am unable to go into recovery. I am able to get to download mode. I am downloading the tool box for vibrant along with the bionix rom. I have never used the vibrant tool box, but my questions:
1. Can use vibrant tool box under download mode and install a new copy of bionix without loosing info of the internal memory card?
2. If I use Oding3_V1.0 and install Eugene_2e_jk2 (like I originally did a long time ago), would I loose the info in the internal memory card?
3. Is there another, easier way to get bionix install and not loose my internal memory card?
I would appreciate any help. I am downloading both programs and it is tacking a while, so any help would help a lot while I wait.
whatever you do it shouldnt wipe your internal sdcard....but i do suggest to just odin back to stock
thanks button if i helped

Thanks a lot! That is a good to know. I was worried I would loose all the info in the internal card.
Do you know if there is a newer version of the eugene with root? Or what would you recommend as the latest stock with root for odin?
Thanks again!
this one has never failed and is the easiest to root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1047087
I see it says ** Re-partition is checked now in ODIN - THIS IS APPROPRIATE!! **
I just want to make sure that if check this, my insternal sdcard, that is part of the phone memory, wont be formatted, correct?
Sorry for the questions, but I don't want it to go wrong!
yes it wont be formatted ...the only thing it format is the system file

freeing up internal storage (apps to SD etc.)

My x10MP is giving a warning it's running low on internal storage space.
Is there a way to to transfer apps to the SD card w/o rooting the phone?
Any other suggestions on how to free up space in the internal storage?.
TIA,
Mike
i'm afraid u cant without rooting ur phone. or you should be running 2.2+. u have to root to use link2sd.
Thanks. I don't think the x10MP has been updated beyond 2.1, so 2.2+ is not an option.
You could use a custom rom. Even the 2.3.7 versions work really well nowadays. Hard to install without rooting though...
Good luck!

Rooting is pretty much essential if you want to do any sort of fiddling on your phone.
If you haven't rooted yours and you're running low on internal storage, I am willing to bet you've got lots of app's that came pre-installed that you don't need. I rooted mine and removed loads of stuff I had no use for: Timescape, the neo reader, the radio, etc. And I freed up a lot of memory.
Just be careful if you're removing bloatware though, it's all too easy to remove something you actually need. It's worth looking on here for a safelist of app's you can remove.

You don't know what you miss until you stay on the android 2.1 my friend!
I was like regenerated when I installed custom roms on my mini - not only the install of apps on Sd card, but things like overclocking of the processor, freeing more RAM memory would have been impossible without rooting and a custom ROM 2.3.7.
Just think about it - how faster is working a phone with a 600mHz processor, overclocked to 787mHz!
Thanks all for the replies.
I am hesitating to take the rooting + custom rom route, since if something goes wrong I'll be left with an unusable phone.
For the most point, if anything goes wrong, you can simply re-install the official firmware by using SEUS. You'll lose all your personal data on the phone (but not the SD card though, that's safe) so you should make sure you backup before you start doing anything.
You have to do something quite astonishingly silly to hard-brick your phone (basically breaking it so much only SE can repair it) so as long as you take your time and pay close attention to the process, you should be fine.

Make a backup of all your SMS and Contacts using My Phone Explorer. there are a few apps on the market doing backup of applications too, but I'm not sure whether they can backup apps from non rooted phones. After backing up, go ahead through the root process. You will love the CM7 ROM, don't worry! It's far better than the 2.1 Stock Eclair! Just Look at this:
My Mini is far better using CM7 than much more powerful on the hardware point of view other phones. With some other improvements I even achieved a result of 1444! So think about it.
The CPU on my Mini is working at 787mHz, while your stock one works at 600mHz.
Thanks ticklefish & novicebg.
Can you please provide links to:
1. Detailed step-by-step instructions on rooting the x10MP, and
2. Detailed step-by-step Instructions on how to restore the original SE 2.1 ROM, in case something goes wrong?.
TIA,
Mike

Use the search button has more than 1 thread with this!
For the rooting: download SuperOneClick, open it press Root and follow the instructions.
For flashing Kernel and unlocking bootloader follow the instructions in this topic, the first post and the links inside the instructions:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068553
For going back to stock ROM - it's easy, download SEUS from SE site, install, open and follow the instructions, as you choose to install firmware although you already have the latest version.
And last but not least - don't be so lazy! We all didn't know what to do here in the beginning, but yet we found what we needed. And you want everything without any effort.
thanks xparia & novicebg.
I wasn't trying to be lazy, just it seems I'm not the first to consider installing a custom ROM, so it seems useful to learn from the experience others have already gained, and summarized as to-do list.
Anyway, this is a list of x10mp roms:

UMS feature to buy?

Hi,
can the UMS-feature be bought? I find it extremely annoying that I cannot use the S III as a mass storage device, as I have a 16GB SDCard in it. I know UMS can be activated only if rooting the device, which I try to avoid. So much, that I even would pay for an app to do that...
Plese help.
Thanks
I guess UMS would be possible, but you would only be able to access your external sd-card while UMS is running. It's simply not possible to also mount /data for UMS while android is running.

No UMS without root privileges..nd why afraid of rooting...no root=no XDA Developers
There is an app, for this, it's called SGS3 Easy UMS and it's in the themes and apps forum.
It is free requires root and it works, yet it's still in beta.
Root your phone, otherwise I do not understand the purpose of people registering on this WebSite.
This website (Especially the Android forums) assume you have rooted your device or you are planning to.
Don't be afraid of the root, it's your friend
I takes like three seconds to root with ODIN. Painless and simple.

Little to none.
Just flash a stock firmware with odin and do a factory reset afterwards and you're good to go.

[Q] No root access after (stock) firmware flash?

Hello, when I bought this phone it had THREE (three. co.uk) firmware (with 3 logo when booting, and their app installed).
The phone was also ALREADY rooted - it had superuser app, smartcare app, and I checked it with "Root checker" app - yes, it had root access.
I, for stupid reasons, decided to flash another stock firmware from sammobile and everything went fine, however, after flashing this other stock firmware it didn't have Superuser app, and "Root checker" app didn't find root access as well. Why is that? Is my phone not rooted anymore?
Edit:
Question 2.
Three firmware took only 20MB of space and this new stock firmware from sammobile (has even less apps, no games etc) but is taking up 42.89MB of memory after clean install! Any idea why it takes that much more?
P.S. Both are 2.3.6 Gingerbreads
You have to re-root your device. After flashing new firmwares the root is going away.

Thanks a lot for an answer! :good: I'm new and read a lot but never seen this fact.
What about Question 2? My pre-installed firmware took only 20MB of program memory when it was new or after hard reset, and this new stock from Sammobile, it doesn't have all the games and other apps, but takes up 42MB
It may has bigger data.

Oh well, that's too bad because Ace has rather small program memory and not all apps can be moved to SD so it will soon start lacking it if I don't limit myself... Anyways, thank you for answers.

[Q] Rezound internal memory

I installed INFECTION 2.9.1 over my rooted ICS installation, but decided I liked the look of the ICS sense better, so I decided to restore my nandroid image of ICS. It booted up but got stuck on the screen right after the white HTC one. I flashed back to jellybean and tried a FACTORY RESET. It reboots me into RA-VIGOR with the error message "E:Invalid command argument"
I can boot back into jellybean but now it is telling me there is NO INTERNAL memory. Where did it go?
Have I killed my phone here?

No you just didnt read threads or previous quiestions...upon moving from stock to a 4.2 based rom you got the bug from memory on that...you need to switch to twrp if not on that and mount and partition your emmc and internal sd card....this has been a known bug for the longest time now....dont use Amon Ra (RA-VIGOR) as it gives bugs on rom installs for any rom really and it doesnt play nice....such as possible phone overheats, battery drain, and many random reboots even after not upping your min frequency

Yep, you are right, I did not read previous threads as I did not know there was a problem with Amon Ra when I first installed it. The Infection 2.9.1 thread recomemended using it! Anyhow, I have since got a message pop up on the screen that said something about bad memory and told me to format it. I did, and now I can see my internal storage again. It is now empty of course, but what was on it when it was factory ? Is there anywhere I could get a copy of those files from?

Yep, the software that was on it before formatting. It was just whatever default files were on the phone from the factory, and I assume some of them files were to restore the phone to factory. Is there anywhere I could find those files and just copy them back to the phone?

Hey, as you seem to be very knowledgeable about all this (and i'm most definatly not , what I ultimatley would like is jellybean with the sense clock and weather . I also noticed from the infected rom that the camera did not report how many pictures could be taken with the available memory left. Is there is a rom out there can satisfy my needs? Yes, it is the internal 10gb that I meant. For a while it was not showing, either on the phone or in windows. After the message on the phone came up to format it (which I did) I could then see it in both windows and on the phone. I had not taken any notice of what was on it beforehand. I have only had the phone for a couple of weeks as it was given to me by a friend who was cut off from Verizon for not paying his bill !! I shoved in a TMOBILE sim from a spare phone I had and it works just fine for making calls but only Edge for data (not that it matters as I have a Optimus L9 for data)
Any info you could find would be most appreciated.

to go back to stock you actually have to first s-off and unlock the bootloader....also 4.2 reboots furiously if you dont set things up right...try a 4.3 rom like Tachyon or Carbon Rom....on either one of those ive yet to have a randoom reboot on proper settings that i set up

I was looking at the Tachyon rom yesterday as it happens, but I read somewhere that in 4.3 they changed something with the way memory is handled? and that you can no longer select the external SD card in the camera app, only the internal memory. Is that right?

yes but to be honest....stock is the same exact way
Edit...if your looking for a good fresh fast and to have everything work but base build go with tachyon....if your looking for fully customizable everything thats fast and stable go with carbon rom or pac 4.3....also you can download and replace the stock gallery with one that does save to internal sd card which is 10gb...you can always transfer to external sd as well as to a pc
