Busy Box? - Motorola Photon 4G

So ROM Toolbox wants me to download busy box and install it onto my phone. What is it? Is there a point to download it? Is there a point to having ROM Toolbox? Saw it would let me backup my ROM and such. Any info you guys can provide would be awesome. Thanks.

busybox is ok. some root required apps need/use it.. I dont know why though.
titanium backup is another app that can backup your device. you must be rooted though.

yeah, I'm rooted. and this is the first ever app that has requested it or asked me to install it, so I'm just curious as to what purpose it serves, if any, and if it will harm my system or do anything crazy if I DO install it?

Busybox is required for some Unix functions that are not available in Android. It complements root access...
You can learn more about it here: http://www.busybox.net

I ended up just saying screw it I can always go to a backup if need be and installed it. Thanks though!

I used an app from the market called Busybox Installer 1.5 to get it installed on my phone. I used the latest version of busybox 1.19.

Same thing I did.

[Q] just rooted

ok.. im all done rooting.. got lagfix.. and tried rom manager and there wasnt an option for the fascinate.. so i guess ill wait on that.. any recommendations on what else to do.. i want to get rid of all the bloatware.. but im not sure how..
Use root explorer (download from market), and rename the bloatware packages you want to get rid of to .apk.old.
An example, rename /system/app/Blockbuster_Stub_v0_2_build_12-unsigned-signed.apk to Blockbuster_Stub_v0_2_build_12-unsigned-signed.apk.old
This will remove the Blockbuster application from your list of installed programs.

SuperOneclick help

Hey i flashed KA7 using Odin and now i'm trying to root and need help. I was able to succesfully root using SOC but i don't have busybox (what is it and why do I need it?) Am i still considered rooted?
If you find Superuser in your app drawer you are rooted I believe. If you install Titanium Backup all you need do is click on problems after the app has opened and it will give you the option to install latest version Busybox. You can also find Busybox in the market.
Also, make sure that you have room in your /system/ partition. You will want to have a couple megs of free space. If not, you may need to remove from crap from /system/app/
Busybox is "the unix army swiss knife" or something that that. its essential system commands and tools.
Thank you

Here's a question perhaps some one can tell me what I am doing wrong. I had followed all the proper steps and when it got to the end SOC said it was mounting boot path and it hangs, the question if should I be in debug mode or standard usb both amounts to a whole lot of nothing any answers?

I have Superuser in my apps, but when I go to use a "root required" app it says I'm not rooted. Any idea why this is happening?
The most easiest way I was able to get root access was to odin back to 2.1 update, the use an app called z4root mod. After its done make sure you install CWM and your good to go and flash any 2.2 rom you want. Make sure you read the bothered threads if you want to flash a 2.3 rom. Those steps are different.

I'm rooted how do I get rid of apps

OK...I am new to Android. I have my phone rooted but am wondering how can I uninstall some of the junk that came on the Thunderbird. Stuff like Blockbuster and the Golf app. Also how can I change my boot screen? Any tips would be helpful.
Titanium backup,(suggest pro where u can freeze them) is the easiest way.

I downloaded Titanium backup and it says i am not rooted. I have ROM manager and superuser in my all apps screen.
I chose to install one of the custom roms that just removed the Verizon apps... Provided link below. Though did have to redo some of the root process after flashing the custom rom, but not a huge hassle. Plus got rid of the bloat thanks to adrynalyne

still learning this phone. Not sure if I am ready for that yet I do not even know how to flash to a new rom yet. I used the fast root method that just came out yesterday to gain root to the phone. I know....I am not hard core yet.

free version is ok but pro is better... you can freeze apps first, if it messes something up defrost it and dont uninstall!
Thanks for the help guys. Do you think getting rid of the apps like Blockbuster, Golf, Twitter etc would do any harm?
I deleted mine with TiB, no problems...
now i just have to figure out how to delete them

Samsung Gravity Smart SGH-T589

hello
i just bought this phone a couple hours ago
tell me did i mess up? i can't find any roms, kernels, or recoveries for this phone.
i've spent the last couple hours searching for any info and haven't found even a little.
i have it rooted with superoneclick, i can't adb push any files though, like the UOT kitchen files.
any help would be greatly appreciated
This phone!
Its not bad a phone but its just sluggish and yeah i have been trying to find ROMS and BUILDS for this phone. Someone make something please:
well i found a forum for this phone model, not much info available yet, except confirmed rooting...
http://androidforums.com/samsung-gravity-smart/
Awe man well at least im hoping there is someone who has this device and is willing to make a rom!
Not a bad phone but it needs to be cleaned up badly.
Over clocking it does help it a lot.
I have just rooted my gravity smart, but still can't uninstall telenav and others...did I do something wrong? I watched the video, and followed the steps, it was VERY easy, install, click root, pretty much. Still need to get rid of all the junk apps...
Hi Guys i just wanted to be part of this thread for updates. My lil sister has one of these and I wanted to get more info. Ill be on the look out as well and keep you guys posted.

until we get a different kernel developed, we can't overclock the cpu.
the stock kernel doesn't have support for overclocking.
at least from what i'm understanding anyway.
we can raise the floor but not the roof.
yes the superuser and other box thing got installed, and I saw the super user, but when I run it there is no apps in it...do you use the other one to uninstall things?
Yes BusyBox both got installed.

from what i'm interpreting...
superuser is the administrator or babysitter
busybox is the interpreter or the middle man
to unistall programs, such as system apps, which i wouldnt do until we have a ROM or RECOVERY available, i use titanium backup.
note that when u back up a system app, it only backs up the information file, not the app itself...
so if u uninstall it and want it back, youre screwed basically.. probably not completely, but pretty much. i learned this the hard way.
now, if you backup a user app, it saves the app itself.. unlike system apps.
just use titanium backup and "FREEZE" the system apps you don't want, for now.
please don't uninstall them.
infact, if anyone could get me a copy of the 3d gallery and music app that comes with this phone, i'd be much appreciated.
i hope this helps you.
i've asked around for some help porting a recovery, no replies yet
Recovery
Any responses yet? :l
Im actually happy you are doing something about this
Much oblige
Freeze First..
I used Titanium backup pro to freeze unwanted files first and let that be for a day or so after a couple of reboots. Then I uninstalled what was not needed. Baby steps here is my best recommendation since the first time I did this I bricked my phone. I also had an email into Kousch but to no avail.
Keep Moving Forward,

unrooting?
I'm kind of a noob at this but can I unroot this device so I won't void the warranty?
Also. Anyone have all the apks of all the apps this phone came with?
I would greatly appreciate it!
i wish i had dumped the system folder before i started uninstalling apps myself...
maybe someone who hasnt uninstalled anything yet would post a link to a dump of the /system/app/ folder with the apks for us...
if someone was willing to do this for us, i'd recommend a factory reset prior to dumping the files
Hey guys! I got this phone as a warranty replacement for my Cliq (WORST PHONE EVER). I was excited at first cause it worked much faster and came w/ 2.2. But now it seems like this is the develpment communities step child! Where are all the devs???? Anyway, I'm a totall beginner when it comes to Android development. I have not yet rooted, and would be happy to provide you guys with anything if it means bringing some life to the development of this phone. Let me know what I can do!
P.s. I would be happy to provide a system dump, just need instruction on how to do so.
hey comoc85
welcome to the stepchild thread, lol
easy to root this phone with superoneclick
here is a link to the Samsung Kies Program that has the usb drivers bundled for our phone for rooting, etc.
http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.com/downloadfile/ContentsFile.aspx?CDSite=US&CttFileID=4132035&CDCt[/url] tType=SW&ModelType=C&ModelName=SGH-T589HBBTMB&VPath=SW/201106/20110625042859732/TMO_T589_Kies_20.exe
here is a link for a youtube video for rooting our phone as well
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMg5LfPW5m4&feature=player_embedded
are you familiar with using adb commands?
if so, easy to grab all the system apps for us or yourself for later
just by entering "adb pull /system/app/" and it will dump your system apps
probably zip them for uploading, be sure to factory reset prior to dumping so that your information isnt included.
remember, don't unistall any system apps once rooted till we get a developer to make a rom for us. some people have bricked this phone doing that. also note this is a "touchwiz" phone and do not remove and apps named "TW....." or it will cause errors..
titanium backup does not backup system apps, i found out after i unistalled them... it acts like it does but only backs up the data, not the app itself...
it would be wise, even for yourself, to dump your /system/app/ folder to your computer incase you need to replace a app you borked somehow... our firmware isnt available on samusngs website yet, or samfirmware.com
i wish i had known to dump my /system/app/ folder prior to uninstalling a few things... but my phone still works... anyway, found some build.prop edits that work on our phone for a lil tweaking..
hopefully someone will pick up development on this phone..
i dont understand how to cook a rom or i'd attempt it, and without a recovery to make a backup, i surely don't want to attempt it..
have a great day
oh to dump your system/apps/ folder you have to be rooted and have sdk + java installed on your computer..
if you're into changing roms etc, you'll need to learn this stuff anyway.
here's a link to a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1SOSXwkc_8

ive done factory reset several times while being rooted and not lost root or had any problems... this is due to having the stock recovery...
dont ever do a factory reset while using a custom recovery... brick brick brick..
like i said though, factory reset while under stock recovery while rooted is fine.
oh i had problems with the newest superoneclick version and tried version 1.9.5 without any hangups or problems.. just fyi

[Q] Root Question

So I have the HTC Evo 4G LTE and i upgraded to the 3.16 update. Ran QBKING77's root and unlock method and everything worked great, my question is, i was using the phone and ran my backup of titanium and after i did that it said that i lost root access, so i did the twrp recovery (2.4.1) and reset the phone to right after the unlock, i deleted the titanium backup i had and downloaded all my apps and settings again manually, If i use Root checker basic (one with a white background and hashtag with a green checkmark) it says i have root access, if i use Root Checker (with blue android) it says i do not, if i try to use titanium backup it says i do not have root, but every other root program i have works fine and says i have root access, ROM Toolbox Pro works just fine...how do i get Titanium Backup to work???
edit- this is the error i get with titanium backup: sorry, i could not acquire root privileges. This application will *not* work! Please verify that your ROM is rooted, and try again. This attempt was made using the "/system/xbin/su" command
What rom are you on?? Also you can try to update your su app from within the app or flash the su zip found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
to see if it will resolve the issue. Also what version of titanium backup are you using? You should have the option to hit the problems button and download a reliable version of busy box from within the titanium backup app. If not and your running a stock rom then download busybox from the play store, install latest ver and see if it helps.

Have you checked if Super SU is granting titanium backup root access?
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Download busybox from the play store, run the app and get latest ver of busy box, clear data on tb, reboot, and see if you still get the error. If so try flashing the su zip from the link. If that's a no go I'd recommend backing up your data via other apps, making a nand & flashing a stock rooted rom.

It says it has access, says grant, but now the root checker basic i was using says i do not have access, restarting to see if i can change it, when i start SuperuserSU, it say i need to update the binaries and when i hit ok, it says installing and then operation failed and starts the program. As well, anything that has been granted access, a little black popup shell shows at the bottom of the screen real quick saying that super setcpu has been granted root access for the interactive shell?
I have tried two versions of busybox, busybox free which tells me there was a problem opening a shell with root access and then closes and i tried busybox installer which says device is rooted but when i hit install it says that instillation failed.
Im on the stock rom from the 3.16 update, everything i have read is that i would not be able to flash a rom because of compatibility issues and i the 3.16RUU is not available for download anywhere..and just FYI, still fairly new to rooting, but learning!
Thanks
Thanks 72, I flashed the SU Update 1.04 from your link and its working perfect now, good to go...take care. Hopefully it stays rooted!
