Quick VPAD7 user's partial guide to custom roms & ITE compatibility - Viewsonic ViewPad 7 & Variants

Here's a quick info-guide to currently available custom rooted ROMS for the VPAD7 in the U.S. market, including one's that are compatible with newer ITE hardware - if you have the N700, A800, etc. this might not be apply (as there are posts & questions here from newer members on a relatively new sub-forum) *** (also, the Viewsonic 10" pads/tabs/etc. are NOT the same = SEARCH first, please ....)
Hopefully, this will help some of you plan your projects while backing up your original ROM - I actually tested them all quickly over 2 days using ClockWorkMod 3.0.2.8 (updated from CWM 2.5.1.2 that most are using here, I believe) by Googlehome.
Froyo Enhanced (non OC version only) OS 2.2.1 - Baseband 3.7_125, Kernel 2.6.32.9 and Build 1008_3_240 (and it can boot up & rotate in portrait mode) ITE hardware is supported & once installed, boot up to Android setup screen to be activated, skip setup, etc. - ready to go.) Remember to wipe clean system/data/cache, etc. before flashing - save your CWM backup to your computer and/or alternative mSD/usb drives first.
TJ_Style's FM6 ROM - OS 2.2.2 - Baseband 3.7_125, Kernel 2.6.32.9 and Build 5029_3_310 (OC verison does NOT work with ITE) - need a little bit of work, to flash the stock kernel (boot.img) provided in the download links. Or, you can also use the one saved in your Recovery (CWM under Advanced Recovery - restore this immediately after flashing this ROM & before rebooting & starting up the 1st. time) It is very important to do a Backup of your entire ROM first in case something isn't done right - better yet, do a test run to make sure that you can restore properly before experimenting .... it will save time, etc. (updated footnote - it's best to use the "updated.zip with wifi fix in TJ's link http://www.megaupload.com/?d=B2DB3VAO and the 2.2.2 boot.img http://www.megaupload.com/?d=DGHF1HY3 linked in the original thread also worked for me, for those of you without your saved original boot.img)
EU V1.7 and 1.7b w. ITE boot.img (and init.D support) by Amalgation - this will work with newer ITE hardware. Please check your device & developer's log w. instructions to download the correct zip file. WiFi connectivity issues fixed (with MAC address n/a & unable to scan/turning off) - flash it first and, if necessary, then reflash EUv1.7/b version as applicable, and WiFi should work (as least for me) - as always, wipe/clear dalvik, cache & system clean first, reboot & then flash the zip file ---- please, BACKUP as precaution & S.O.P.
The following custom ROMS, based on my actual tests & flashing, including efforts to patch/update boot.img, etc. could NOT get my VPAD7 with ITE to boot past the Android screen & continue to initial setup, etc.
CVPAD7 V1.0 (Cleanviewpad)
Flint V1.0 (did restore from own boot.img & get some screen response, but it's not a functioning ROM, so ....)
Wellcom A800 "stock" firmware (didn't work as flashed - could try the patch boot.img ?? once rooted, I commented on original linked post ....)
As for restoring your device to stock/factory state (if case you've "accidentally bricked it) the Viewsonic site has several *.nbo file to restore (flash by using SUTL provided via your PC) - then you need to root it again using the SuperOneClick or GingerBreak apk methods, etc. But, only one file will work with ITE devices, as far as I know - FM6 3350_0_1008_A01.nb0 & just released recently, all others are for non-ITE VPAD7's.
Comments, sugestions & questions, additions to this working "guide" in progress are welcomed & appreciated - since we got a XDA users from around the world, let's share our wisdom & knowledge. This VPAD7 is one of the few, if any, 7" tablet with both wifi & GSM/3G features, the CPU is slow by today's standard & the "X" model with faster processor is being released, so the user bases will continue to grow - waiting for our expert resident developers to cook up Gingerbread since Honeycomb is most likely out of the question for obvious reasons .... Thanks & have a nice day !
For Reference: my VPAD7 was using Froyo 2.2.2 (stock, rooted & striped of certain non-critical apps via Titanium Backup) 2.6.32.9 and Build 1008_3_350, SW Ver 3.41, FM6-001 and HWVer 107. Code M & Production Date 3/24/2011. Using ADW Launcher 1.3.6 Standalone, App2SD Free (V2.32) from AZSoft Technology . (all downloaded via Google Market (updated to 3.1.3 with apk) plus "WidgetSoid" to easily shutdown, reboot & get into Recovery.
For Car Home, the linked files can be installed to work with Vpad7 - it will allow for screen to stay on, important when using Navigation (Maps) and other Car Applications - as in most Android smartphones - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=796439 - use Astro or ES File Explorer to install the apps. Enjoy!

Thanks for the info, I have tried the custom roms as well, but could not get any to boot past the initial "tap android to start" thing, there was no screen response at all. Thing is I have hwver 106 which I was under the assumption was non ITE. I think we need to create a post that can be stickied containing all relevent info, ie the roms available (which you have covered), the differecnces in hwvers etc,

Hmmm, so yours being v106 has ITE too, okay - try flashing TJ_Style's ROM & "patched" it with one's original saved boot.img as suggested. It works for me running v107 ITE. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093440&page=10 or use this posted in original thread - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=DGHF1HY3 (which I tested to work on mine with ITE hardware)

Thank you Letitride.

Folks - please be sure to credit & thank these ROM's developers that made it possible for us to enjoy, I'm just trying to compile or put info together in one spot, so that we do not have to start new threads all over, again & again.
When possible, try NOT to use PM so that what we all learn can be shared in the open by everyone else, but if necessary & appropriate, contacts via PM are okay.
Chances are most of you know it already - but, for a few tablet newcomers posting newbie questions for help - I'm using the following Apps from Market and find these to be useful to get more "fun" out of the Vpad7 series - as always, do a CWM and Titanium Backup before hand (and, on a regular basis) just in case something go wrong - you can easily recover & NOT lose your important data, settings & files. Tips - use a spare 4GB mSD card to experiment & flash, do a full setup once you got it "right" when flashing new ROMs.
1. App2SD (by Sam Lu or AZSoft Technology) free up device's internal storage space/memory - 50 Apps installed & 30 MB available.
2. VTL.Launcher - easy to use in portrait (vertical) mode as the V prefer landscape, but some Apps look better otherwise & enough screen displayed w. keyboard popped up.
3. WidgetSoid - up to 10 customized wideget, easy accessible from one of the (Main) screen, i.e. WiFi on/off, Mobile data on/off, Brightness, Screen ON, Airplane Mode, Reboot (option for Recovery, Hot Reboot, etc. instead of just Power Off only)
4. Fancy Widgets v3.4.1 (Android Does) for Clock & Weather
5. MultiLing keyboard (plugins for many languages/fonts & numerous customization - including Asian languages)
6. Using Maps 5.2 which I find to be stable (latest is 5.10) and Google Market rolled back to 2.x (latest 3.15 is too big in file size) - otherwise, device will run low in space ....
Have fun with it - 2 newer screenshots to share with what I've done to mine, just imagine the possibilities

Hi Letitride,
I am using TJ_Style's FM6 ROM with the original boot.img as i have a newer VPad, the problem i have is i cant move any apps to the sd card, from what i read it has something to do with init.d in the boot image?
Is there a way i can change this to get app2sd to work?
Thanks for all the info.

My suggestions, it's easiest to "experiment" with a 2nd. mSD card, 4GB will do to try & setup App2SD with a 1MB partition - once it's working, you can use your regular mSD card, 8GB would be my minimum, and I'm beginning to run below 50% with a faster 16GB mSD card (keep in mind the Vpad7 support 32GB)
Okay, are you using DT's App2SD which I believe only work with overclocked kernel and init.d - devices with ITE multi-touch capacitative screen (newer OS 2.2.2 / possibly some with 2.2 - HWVer 107 or 106) - DT's Apps will NOT work (I'm not sure if you flash that FM6 ROM as is, or did you use your own saved IMG or also flash the 2.2.2 boot image ??)
Another option is to use a different App2SD from Google Market, I'm personally using App2SD ver 2.33 (1214) from AZSoft Technology - and, I have over 35 Apps on the mSD card including my Angry Birds for fun, Moon+ Reader, TB, Astro & Translate, etc. That still leave about 20 non-movable Apps with the internal ROM/storage - just 30MB free out of 171.5 MB - but lot better than initial setup, since mine is loaded with Google Voice, FaceBook, Gmail, YouTube, Twitter, etc.) *** Same App2SD running with GingerBread is much more efficient, leaving my HTC smartphone with over 90MB free space - Froyo just isn't as "cooperative" or getting along with efforts to move things over to free up extra space. Not endorsing the above Apps, please check & try out different ones from GM and decide for yourself ....
Others might have suggestions, please feel free to comment & share what's working - hope this is helpful to you.
Cheers & let's have FUN !
Footnote - postscript, a new EU V1.6 ROM has been posted with ITE support, you might want to try it since it has init.D support - and should work (Caution: except possible WiFi issues,) or, use the newest V1.6 (regular customized) ROM - you will need to prepare & reformat the SD card first, so please BACKUP your data, etc. etc. Good Luck !

It's simple, turn off your device. Hold down the left Volume button key on top while pressing the Power button on the left, it should boot up in FTM Mode and display your Hardware & Software Verisons and Build info. To exit, use a small pin to gently push in the Reset button on the lower edge, the smallest & closet to the side.
Most likely, yours did NOT came with ITE - you will know once you flash one of the custom ROM & you cannot go past the Android activation screen & the screen does not respond.

Thanks! That works!
SWVer=3.16R

I have no ITE HW. The Costum ROM works great.
What is the difference between the normal and ITE HW?

CM9 port
Hey guys,
Does anyone know if it's possible to port CM9 to the VPAD7, 107 w/ ITE?
Also, does it have an ARMv11 or ARMv6 processor?
I saw on one site that it's v6 but ViewSonic's product page says v11 in the Specs (see link below)
http://www.viewsonic.com/products/vpad7.htm
I'm very new to Android Development but I'm looking at getting involved to update this tablet from Froyo. I could probably live without HW accel and/or camera/camcorder functionality if everything else were to be possible.
I'm looking to follow this guide:

[ROM] SuperAosp from [email protected] & tolemaC

Special thanks to the creator of the item inexus from which inspired me to give a graphic touch to the rom.
This rom (not a mod) has been developed entirely from the source of Google and very little of Cyanogen framework.
Thanks to Cyanogen and all his staff for the contributions received.
Is installed from the recovery, as always, do not worry if it takes a while to leave the first splash is entirely normal and configuration files running on first boot.
I strongly recommend formatting SDCARD total with three partitions, SDCARD 7.4 GB / EXT3 512MB / LinuxSwap 64MB, you can do from the recovery, but remember to keep you before your pictures and music. This is because directories are created in the sdcard called Android which are recorded in the data I have found to negatively affect the rom. PROVEN!,
This is only necessary in case you want to have Apps2sd or Linux Swap, if not going to do any of those things is not necessary to format the Sdcard with three partitions.
WARNING!
Only if you come from different roms (Donut, Eclair, Froyo) is necessary to WIPE, when coding in Gingerbread from this rom will not need to wipe again to install later roms.
This rom installs itself alone, that is completely reconfigures.
Before installing the rom Wipe recommend because it has many changes. When installed and out of recovery by restarting leave untouched while the LED flashes. At this point I recommend you salteis the account settings to skip giving google and once in the launcher and set podreis rom to your liking. This is because otherwise the phone will Autoconnect the market and begin to automatically download all the applications you had installed and it saturates the terminal because it does hit, besides putting the background image that you had prior to the rom and then you ask me that as it is possible that if I install the rom to wipe the bottom appears to me that I had before. In this way you will do a clean install. Then you enter the market and instalais a free application to refresh anyone that you have installed in the terminal.
Very attentive to you to do restorations of any kind against the rom or program that you can have problems. (I mean backups, including their own SupSetup least in the section on applications), special attention to restore configuration data of any kind. Under the best not to doubt.
SupSetup new V16 in all roms, not serve any previous SupSetup for this rom
The new integrated SupSetup activation brings on-demand applications in the applications section extras, you can enable applications that interest you as the Roma comes in "Lite" (without extra applications installed) so that everyone can choose the best configuration.
It is important before you set up Google account to be activated from applications before SupSetup so that when you connect to the servers to configure your Google account, they enter the downloads section.
After entering the market and to display applications install any application downloads for cool downloads.
Apps2sd
Apps2sd is to pass the phone applications both current and future to the ext3 partition, it is imperative not to activate any way to move application to the sd or change from internal to external location application. Simply activate it from the SupSetup without touching any configuration in the Spare Parts or applications from the rom settings.
Apps2sd not activate without at least once you have restarted
General
- Rom in "LITE"
- New graphical look different from SuperGinger's
- All you had the SuperGinger but since source of non-Cyano Google
Added
- Wake & Unlock
- Always visible Bluetooth Settings (tolemaC)
- Hide clock
- Percentage of battery
- It's part of Cyanogen CyanogenModsettings
- Etc ...
A rom much lighter than any other that you were able to prove, you could say that is the Nexus CSDI One (this rom Magic gave a lot to talk), completely stable and trouble-free calls or anything known, at least tests we are doing we have not yet found any fault.
Applications
- You can install more from the extra applications SupSetup
- Google Apps
- Flash Player 10.1
Download:

NOT WORKING?
Are you sure you've done a factory reset? You have to do a factory reset on the first screen (from Dell) of the recovery mode.
Still not working or causing problems (button still lights)? Maybe you're old baseband, try to download new here and upload using fastboot command.
Code:
fastboot -i 0x413c flash amss amss.mbn
Last chance. If you still have problems, try loading the original ROM ver. 354 and then reload the Simple Streak ROM. This may work
OPTIONAL MODIFICATIONS (update via StreakMod Recovery)
Landscape mode - return back to the default display orientation
Stage UI - return back to the default launcher from Dell
STK Tools - return back to the Sim Toolkit
Original kernel - if you have any problems, you can try the original kernel from Dell.
DJ-Steve KERNEL
Install the kernel from DJ_Steve ROM (thanks for his great work) and adjust some settings. After the update default frequency is set at 1.19 GHz and smartass CPU governors (can be changed via the tools available (SetCPU)). The update will not lose any user data.
DJ-Steve KERNEL INSTALLATION:
you have already installed the Simple Streak ROM (ver. 1.0, 1.1, 1.2)
copy perfupdate.zip to SD card
update via StreakMod Recovery
If update does not work, try the version without the default overclocking.
Good to See....
other custom ROM choices emerging for our beloved Streak!
Anyone try this yet?
Based upon what I've done with 351 (completely ripped out the Stage UI, Dell Sync, Amazon MP3, CoPilot Live, Evernote, Napster, Oovoo, PageOnce, Roxio Now, and Zinio Reader), leaving Swype and adding LauncherPro, the Streak should be very fast and very responsive, especially when shutting it off.

yeah ive had it on my phone for a few hours....
ive been using 354 since it come out & streakdroid before that & i think 354 is great so i jumped on this when it come out
ive got to admit i havnt done a factory reset yet as i dont want to lose my setting (i might tonight when i dont need my phone)
EDIT
portrait pics
A very clean rom. Simple and fast.
I really like it and didn't find any problem as of this moment, phone works, GPS works.
Is that possible for add adhoc network support in the next version?
Thanks Spidla, keep up the good work
Seems pretty solid, the only issue I have, is after a reboot, it is seems to be stuck in Landscape and wont auto rotate on the home screen. When I eventually get it to go Portrait everything is fine. I cleared the program cache, fixed permissions and cleared the dalvic cache, but that didn't fix the issue. Apart from that all my apps restored fine with Titanium backup root (after installing busy box) and they all work OK, there has been no force close issues either. Great work, thanks

Been using this for an hour or so and must admit I am very happy with it. Feels very fast and I love the built in portrait lock and the battery percentage mod. I think this rom is a keeper !
To the person stuck in landscape, on boot up I go to settings and toggle auto rotate on, rotate to portrait and then toggle it back off. Seems to be working for me so far...
Only question I have is that I'm using this with an older baseband (351) is that going to cause me problems ? Seems ok so far.
Cheers,

Works fabulous! As soon as I started the system, it felt so light and fast! I really like it! Good job! *thumbs up!*
EDIT: The only thing I don't like is that I can't uninstall Launcher Pro and buy the full version. I just can't uninstall. Any ideas?
EDIT 2: Nevermind, I install an Unlocker and now I've got the full version installed.
Thanks again for the ROM!

I'm having an issue with this ROM.. I factory reset everything, davlik empty, and clear the partition as well before installing, install the ROM, and factory reset again, reboot system.
Goes to Android load screen and then goes into regular android lock screen (portrait) and then back to the Android load screen, does it a couple times and then either freezes and I have to take out battery or just freezes at Android lock screen.
I am restored back to GingerStreak now. Any suggestions?
For a multi language rom use .351. I use it with Dutch language and it is great stuff
@OP Did you also optimize the build.prop?

Sounds like you have a boot loop.
Try to go by these steps (I did it that way)
1. Put .zip file into the root of SD card
2. Boot into Recovery (I'm using Clockwork)
3. Do a dalvik cache wipe
4. I didn't clear the partition.
5. Do a factory reset in the Clockwork recovery.
6. Choose the .zip and flash the ROM
7. When it says installation completed, choose the option ''Reboot Recovery'' and press VOL UP + VOL DOWN at the same time and keep holding the power button
8. You'll get to the Dell Factory Reset screen
9. Do a factory reset (NOT FROM THE RECOVERY)
10. Reboot automatically
11. Enjoy
Also, download the ROM file again, it might be corrupted.
- Hope it works out for you, it really is a great ROM.

[ROM]EUViewpad7 v1.7b (Updatev1.7b.zip for v1.7 users only)

ROM Name: EUViewpad 7
Based on: Stock EU firmware (froyo 2.2.2) for Viewpad 7
This build is for Viewsonic Viewpad 7 and similar devices.
Because none of the other custom roms I could find for this device included my native language as a display option I decided to build my own custom firmware using the stock firmware. I've applied the best fixes I could find in other custom roms for this device and also included some of my own.
Version 1.5
Replaces android 2.2 with android 2.2.2. Some minor tweaks to the framework are added and some small issues are fixed (youtube green bar.)
Since some people still seem to have problems with wifi, mostly due to old settings still maintained after flashing a new rom. I added a small script that removes /misc2/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf on first boot which should solve it for most people.
Version 1.6
Fixes the market incompatibility found in V1.5. Reverted back to the older market which doesn't have this problem and removed the market updater. Due to an error in the build.prop the stagefright player was being disabled. That has been fixed so quadrant scores should return to normal. s2k7 has provided a non overclocked kernel with init.d support, based on that I've provided an ITE version. This version is exactly the same as the non-ITE version, except for the alternate boot.img. I have not tested this as I do not have a device with ITE hardware.
Version 1.7
- More languages (French, Italian, Spanish, Asian)
- Cleaned up /system to create more free space for file manipulation.
- Updated Apps with new icons for ic_menus.
- updated framework-res.apk with new images and styles
- updated Flash Player to 10.2
Version 1.7b
- Added languages Chinese and Taiwanese (I guess from country strings, can't read it)
- Updated framework-res.apk with black on white menu (instead of white on black) to match the theme.
- Updated browser.apk with new menu icons. Most people will probably install another browser, but I like the stock one, it's very small and light.

4. Use the volume keys to step through the menu, power to select and back. (there is bug in clockwork when you press volume keys it jumps 2 steps; to jump one step press and hold volume and then press power to select)
5. Select the "advanced->Partition SD Card" item, next select size for your Apps2SD partition (1024MB recommended), next select 0 as size of swap partition. (Remember that this will delete all data on your SD card, so make backup of SD card if you need !!!)

skink123 for creating Cleanviewpad v1.0 and the opening post that goes with it

Without the work these people have done on custom roms for this device I wouldn't have known where to start and this wouldn't have been possible.
Additional Instructions
Returning to stock firmware:
To return to a stock firmware, you need to use the SUT L3 software to flash original firmware. Here is a small guide and the necessary software.
Flashing to this firmware before installing an EUVviewpad rom seems to fix the wifi problems some people have.
1. Download SUT L3 v1.7.9
2. Download the following rom:
- Download Firmware 3420
3. Unzip the files you downloaded
4. Install SUT L3 on windows
5. Start SUT L3 and click next
6. Check in the bottom left corner if you see the message: A phone is connected (if it is not, you need to install the correct drivers. You can do this by running setup.exe from the virtual CD of the viewpad)
7. Select the rom you downloaded and click next.
8. Your viewpad should now reboot into clockwork recovery and after a few seconds switch to download mode and start flashing the new firmware. This will take a few minutes after which the phone will reboot and start to the stock os.
After this you can choose to root it with SuperOneclick, install cwrecovery and any custom rom.
Installing Touchpal keyboard:
In Version 1.7 Touchpal keyboard has been removed. Here's how to reinstall it:
1. Download this zip: Touchpal.zip
2. Extract the zip to a folder on your sdcard. (for example /sdcard/touchpal
3. Browse to the folder using ES File explorer on the viewpad
4. Install Touchpal_M20.apk and any language packs you want.
5. Go to Settings > Language & Keyboard and activate Touchpal.
6. Long press any text input field and select Input Method
7 From the list, select touchpal.
<reserved space for future updates>
Seems that I didnt test the wifi drivers included in the v1.0 release as well as I thought. While i have no problems with finding and connecting to my AP I can't get a proper internet connection for some reason.
I've reverted the rom back to the Stock EU 2.2 wifi drivers (have no problems with those) and updated the OP with the v1.1 version. Please use V1.1 and only try V1.0 if you have problems with your wifi. I will look into this some more.
My current wishlist of things I plan (hope) to do with this rom:
- Integrate V6 Supercharger script with best settings for Viewpad7 to improve memory performance.
- Install a nice battery icon (Battery Icon Mod?)
- create a new notification bar (i'm thinking transparent or shaded)
- change the default background
- tweak, tweak, tweak.
It would be nice to eventually set up a Custom ROM kitchen for this device, but for now i'll focus on improving this rom.
Original TouchPAL_M20 is still in the rom, I've remove some of the language packs for it to save space, but I can allways add those back in on request.

Good idea! I didn't even know what an APN list was till you mentioned it, but ill try to find the most complete one around and add that to the next version.
By New Market, do you mean the most recent version of the market app preinstalled ? Because this one should just update automagically and work fine, but it wouldn't be to much work to add the most recent one to the rom.
I'm looking into the wifi problem.
Can people with wifi problems on my rom please start up in rtm mode (press volume down and power) and give me HWver and SWver of their device ?

Bravo, excellent to see someone working on a customized Froyo ROM optimized for our "cute" tablet - spouse's been playing Angry Birds on it and until I can get it NAND and Titanium backed up this weekend when she's asleep, I won't get my hands on it to flash this one.
Just curious whether this ROM support the newer Touchscreen or ITE hardware (I'm assuming that it will since it's based on OS 2.2.2 just like ours for the North America regions.) Please advise before I give this a full run with a full wipe & install. BTW, it connect to our 2 wifi routers just fine (1 in g mode-WEP and 1 n mode-WPA2.)
RTM & related info (as shipped)
SWVer 3.41
FM6-0001
HWVer 107
VPAD7 - 2.2.2
2.6.32.9
1008_3.350
FM6-316R (3/22/11)
SUTL3 V1.6.5 (and 1.7.9)
The custom (Froyo Enhanced) non-overclocked ROM I'm running now is based on Froyo 2.2.1 and ITE compatible - Baseband PR3.7_125, Kernel Apps_2.6.32.9 and Build 1008_3_240
Suggestions for the next update -
Status Bar - Interface tweaks by adding Power Widgets (easier to turn on/off wifi, orientation, bluetooth, volume, brightness, airplane mode, etc.)
Also, I changed from stock to ADW Launched, downloaded easily from the "new" Market and installed with Astro FM - as I can lock down the Homescreens so that other "borrowing" & playing with it won't accidently move or delete my desktop icons, etc. etc.
Google Maps V5.9 has been out (and has many useful additions & support for tablets) and so far, it's been reported as relatively stable & NOT prone to FC or reboot, unlike earlier 5.x releases - so it's probably worth the update from the stock 4.5 ?? version as shipped.
I've managed to move some apps & data to the 16GB mSD card but definitely having App2SD or similar will free up internal phone storage space so that I can load more Apps onto it.

Hello,
This looks interesting. I only want to overclock and then restore to my present line-up of apps and will be installing mainly to get the overclocked kernel.
Q: Can I skip the whole 2sd process and not partition when installing this? Great and important feature, but no way to back-up my SD right now so would like to skip that and just benefit from the oc kernel. Or will that not work?
Also, could you please clarify what exactly the difference is from CleanViewpad. Does CleanV also have overclocked kernel?
Thanks!

I think that the main differences are that this has more European languages than CleanViewPad as well as the newest version of Darktremor's Apps 2 SD script. I'm pretty sure that this ROM will function even though you have no ext3 partition on your microSD as the apps are still able to be installed on the internal memory and are - if I remember correctly - installed there by default.

This rom is based on OS 2.2, not 2.2.2 and it's using tjstyle's overclocked kernel, which does not support ITE hardware.
My own viewpad 7 on which i'm developing this rom is SWVer: 3.16R (earliest i've seen so far) and it seems that people with newer versions are suffering from the wifi problem.
I'm going to have to do some more research and experiment a little, but it would help me a lot if someone could provide me with a CWM backup of the stock firmware of the newer devices. rooted or modded doesn't matter, as long as it's still stock firmware and not a custom rom.

Yeah, I tried installing Cleanpad and am using it right now, no problem skipping those steps there so...
So by installing this ROM I get more Euro languages and a newest version of Apps2SD? Excuse me, but I can get the latest version of it on CleanViewpad, it's descriped in its thread here. So unless I want a custom ROM with a Euro language, other than English, French and German, which are included in CleanViewpad, there's no point installing this?
Yes, I believe that's pretty much it sø far, but Amalgation have more things cooking for this ROM and is active in this subforum.

I've started this build mainly for support of the EU languages in this firmware, and I haven't done much else except integrate the best fixes (imo) I could find. I'm working on creating my own framework mod and improved memory management among other things, but it's a work in progress and for now I try to focus on getting this rom to work for as many people as possible.
So for now, if you're not interested in the EU languages, this might not be the rom for you.
Yep, you're right, and that's good, and so are the languages for whoever might need them.
I'm happy with CleanViewpad as it's problem-free and not too ugly, and basically just overclocked CPU and Apps2SD support. Which is all I'm looking for.
But I'm gonna stay tuned here. Nice that others appreciate this device!

Thanks to MongooseHelix I am now able to offer Stock Hboot builds again starting with 2.2.0a3.
These builds do not require blackrose or repartitioning. They are meant for Stock Hboots
These builds have full language support for ENGLISH only. (translations etc are present but lacks dictionaries and some specialized (ie non latin) fonts for other languages)
This is not a feature complete build, to save space the following has been leftout:
Not included:
Boot animation
VideoEditor
LiveWallpapers
Non english fonts
Newwave labs ringtones / sounds
Non english dictionaries

Stock hboot builds will still be available with every release of the blackrose version, but will not be announced.
Download from the evervolv folder on goo.im: http://goo.im/devs/evervolv
The appropriate builds will have 'StockHBoot' in the name (ie Evervolv-Perdo-2.2.0a3-StockHBoot-passion.zip)
Due to space constraints gapps are difficult to fit. I have made a tiny gapps zip that flashes gmail to data and removes all but default ringtones. This package has only the bare minimum to use the market. Unfortunately i cant make it any smaller.

^ Yeah, what taney said.
Better do it right by installing blackrose instead of doing it half-assed. It's worth the hassle, if you could it that.
I voted for Blackrose. I don't see the problem flashing Blackrose on the phone. I tried the full ICS but I need the camera to work so I had to go back to using the Oxygen Rom.
I would vote for blackrose but I tried looking for a guide on how to flash it but I couldn't find any :-\

yup. As the others above me have said,
Blackrose. If people want ICS and the FULL experience, then they wont mind installing it.
No point in putting a cut down version when you already have enough to worry about getting camera and other stuff working.
just my opinion: now that your release is still alpha is good to have the miniskirt version for who don't have Blackrose and want to switch back for a everyday ROM. When it will be at least beta don't mind about this anymore.
thanks for your effort

Good point using blackrose hboot vs stock:
- unlock phone w/o icon key at boot.
- fastboot-able
- resize partitions
Good point using full ics vs miniskirt:
- only girls like miniskirt, the man like rom that work w/ full functions.
So i vote ics full! And keep it dont fAt

I have Blackrose and switch roms without any issues.
I found that restoring after using custom hboot ICS is giving me the frustration.
(of course I repartitioned back to stock hboot after tasting ICS)
It fails nandroid restoring, and Titanium backup is, sort of, a chore for me.
Because I have to manually re-create the home screen again.
So I appreciate your stock hboot versions, until the final version comes out.

that's the key ain't it---
I don't know why people are so scared about blackrose. Only thing that can go bad if you're able to pull your usb cable while flashing inside a timeline of.... let me see.... 0,000002 seconds.
And yes, my N1 is actually my work phone, and I have to rollback after some tests, and I didn't even use the texasice's cm7, I make the original hboot again and then recover my nandroid. And look, I didn't die with that. lol
Yes, I give fully support to custom hboot. N1 is able to run ICS with full power with just a little tunings, really, why people buy a Nexus and doesn't want to use the power that a Nexus phone offers? I really don't understand that.
See my other thread for what works/ doesnt

Need urgent help regarding clockwork recovery mood

hello gentlemen
i bought my viewpad 7 last week. after digging this forum i tried to root my tablet with super one click but i was unable coz it stuck in screen and happen nothing somehow i tried gingerbreak and it worked. as i am totally newbie in android os and i have no idea on programming. but the most important thing is clockwork recovery i saw couple of youtube videos and tried working but ended up with error . i dont know how to setup adb on my pc so i tried terminal emulator but no keyboard.. tried qtadb but show me '' permission denied'' now i am pulling my hair off. i have got rom manager installed on my tablet but whenever i ty to install update.zip it say signature error or somthing (i have got custom rom in my sd and renamed to update zip also i have clockwork recovery img and flash recovery) the only thing i need is a working terminal emulator as i have no idea on comand from pc.
so is there anybody who can give me a easy tutorial or make a video to demonstrate how can i get clockwork recovery installed also custom rom i would be really really greatful
hope someone saves me...
Hello & welcome, there's no need to panic but definitely - very important to be patient, set aside at least half a day or more, and, read - read - read. Take notes as you go along & do NOT rush.
If you have not gone thru this sticky, please do so - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1236990
Sticky #1 is mandatory reading to take full advantage of the Vpad7 so that you can understand the basics, describe your Vpad's hardware & build information, etc. and how to press various buttons, go back, reset & get into Recovery and Bootloader. Without knowing it, you are prone to run into problems.
First, you need to check & make sure that your CWM (which verison) is properly installed & working (and, if so) - check under the Advanced submenu to verify "Signature Verification" status.
Do you have an "older" non-ITE or "newer" ITE multi-touch screen device, which determine which custom ROM can be used? Be specific, please ...
Generally speaking, there is no need to rename a downloaded ROM's zip file to update.zip for flashing ... so I suggest that you do more reading first.
Do you have USB debugging turned on? Applications - unkown sources turned ON to allow installation of non-Market apps? A working knowledge is essential to avoid (soft) bricking your device by being able to understand the process for Flashing - start here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Flashing_Guide_-_Android
There's nothing simple & easy about all these, sorry - time & patience is a requirement to get everything working together. Look under the "Development" section for how to install ROM & the issues involved - there are just a handful of ROMs and you don't need to spend a hundred hours going thru all of them, a few hours of reading will do - a 10 minute Youtube video isn't going to do it. The best person to "save" you is you - YMMV. Regards.

1. Rom manager - I do not use them on my Android devices but if you are comfortable with it and help simplify your tasks & learning curve, good for you. Remember to backup, backup & backup your work & save it to more than one location - those "oops" happened to all of us, sometimes (and, at the worst time - Murphy's Law 101)
2. You only need a few files in its own sub directory or folder to properly run adb and busybox, and, to run the (good old DOS) command prompt from your PC - just need to type the commands carefully. Alternatively, Terminal Emulator (with or without the shell or user interface) can be downloaded from Android Market to the Vpad7 to install & run (it's not pre-loaded) with SU enabled ... (more reading for you on how-to's)
3. Not sure if you are referring to App2SD in Market (quite a few out there) or DT's A2SD and A2SDGUI in some of the custom ROM. Vpad7's custom ROM recommend 1 MB SD ext3/partition in general (ext4 is more advanced and challenging) - there is no need, advantage or benefit in a 2GB or 4GB ext3 with a 16GB mSD card (as you are allocating/reserving unused space that you cannot dynamically changed or reassign later on as you begin to run low on "general" storage space on the card - PLUS, you will have to reformat the card & wipe/lose everything on it, until it's restored from saved backup)
FYI - I keep the last 3 to 5 CWM Backup images/files on the mSD card and it's close to 3GB in size already, not counting pix, mp3's and saved videos.
4. Older version of CWM Recovery worked best for me in repeated ROM flashing & setup to partition/format the mSD, verison 5.0.2.6 can work but the newest one posted 5.0.2.7 did NOT work for me - YMMV, of course. Refer to the one in Cleanviewpad7 V1.0 and its instructions or EU Vapd 7 V1.7b - as I'm guessing from your description that your device is a newer ITE multi-screen hardware build. KWBR V3.2 ROM works with ITE and has the newer kernel and A2SD is easy to use per installation guide - it's lean & stripped of non-essential apps.
Have patience, backup & have run !

First, as I asked before, we do NOT know which ROM you are trying to use?
But, I'm going to guess - since I've flashed all of the working ITE ones here, and you are using KWBR v3.x - and, if so, please confirm or verify, yes or no.
If so, I had issues with its keyboard not showing up in terminal emulator, and there are different reasons for it - namely, including the OP developer's choice of installed KB. However, as a workaround - by running adB/busybox from Windows Vista's command prompt, I can execute instructions to re/mount, reboot, etc.
By installing a different KB & switching to it, it worked under terminal and I can run command prompts directly. There is a learning curve involved here - not something to rush, rather steps by steps - there are "stickies" in the threads and I do not want to further clutter up excellent guides already written up, 6 to 9 months plus ago - which I took time to read, follow & work with. I encourge you to do so as well.
My advice, the easiest to do, is to install & start with a different ROM - Cleanviewpad ROM is basic, simple & easy to install, virtually "bug" free and I suggest that you start with that. KB worked directly as a toggle, popping up from terminal emulator, and you can run commands from it.
Once you are comfortable & has everything working, you can optimize your A2SD and move apps from internal storage to mSD card, etc. and progress to the next level - EU Vpad 7 V1.7b ITE ROM is nice but from experience and reading the thread's posts, some "beginners" lacking knowledge & skills have trouble with it. By running a # of patches, I get it updated to the latest and it's running optimized to my personal liking - it's not entirely difficult to learn but not for someone completely new to Android OS.
Here's a link that you could've google right here in XDA - guide to ADB - bookmarked the link for you, please search for other guides, thanks

hi there thank you so much for helping me again and yes i am using kwbr rom because i have tried cleanviewpad 7 but stuck at welcome screen doesnt work anything then tried lakehouse froyo enhanced but link disabled so stuck with this rom.. i really wish i cloud post on dev section coz im kinda stuck with this post..
but hey if u dont mind and if u have froyo enhanced rom can u upload that for me or give me a working link...
sorry for bothering u but would appreciate
Still waiting for a ROM for Viewpad 7e. Anyone know of one in development? Even the stock ROM bundled with CWM would be good so that we would have the ability to do a Nandroid backup.
Sent from my SPH D700 using XDA App
Cyanogen Mod 9.4, Shadow kernel, EI22. I like my Ice Cream Sandwich!

Are you making good progress after rooting with custom ROM, learning a bit more about using adB and terminal emulator? I searched my storage bins for what I've kept for the Vpad7 - and I have NO luck yet finding the Froyo enhanced ROM. I did uploaded the EU V1.7b ITE custom ROM to Dropbox, along with the a2sd*.zip file (just in case, you are comfortable & ready to try - after backing things up) The A2SDGUI app is available in Market, just search & download & install up once the EU V1.7 ITE ROM is up.
A2SD does NOT need to be working for the ROM to do its basic functions, just that it will soon run low on internal storage/memory and that's where A2SD come in. If you find it useful, do a CWM backup first , then use the earlier version of CWM to reformat the mSD card again (thus, wiping it clean) and setup a 1MB ext3 partition per detailed instructions. Reboot & reconnect USB, and move/restored all of your saved files/folders/settings, etc. back to the mSD drive.
Next, flash the A2SD program by DT again just to be sure from Recovery - and then Restart into Recovery. Wipe cache & dalvik and boot up again - cross your fingers and A2SD should be up & running - check it with A2SDGUI and/or Titanium Backup will display various memory/partition/storage space & usage (used/free & total)

Again, I am and will be be responsible for anything if something goes wrong by using & flashing these zip files, they are unchanged or unaltered as I originally downloaded them. I'm simply posting them with the mess created by the multi-upload servers being offline, etc. as many folks are completely at a loss for what to do next. Full credits go to the OP/xda-developers for creating their masterpieces. If you are not comfortable or unsure, please do not proceed or assume the risk - the stock ROM, especially unrooted, isn't bloated by any means at all. There is NO over-clocking at this point for any ITE kernel for the Vpad7, period - none that I know of. Folks, do NOT confuse or try this with Vpad7e (which is a different device, sorry - cannot help at all)
Regards & do post with your results and share, and, if I can help further with the specifics, will be glad to do so.

Personally, I prefer and continue to use EU V1.7b for ITE, it has support for European languages as well as Asian languages. KWBR only support Euro language and the ROM is more "stripped" down with fewer apps, but it does work nicely "out of the box" with A2SD - downside being that internal memory/storage still seem to run low (once I re-install 50+ apps on my device)
For EU V1.7 - it's using an older version of Android Market, but can be easily updated if one wanted to, and, has a few more "basic" apps pre-installed including Documents To Go - and, by adding "Car Home" - I have a working 7" GPS device in the car when needed (sound volume is low, however due to those tiny stereo speakers) - I have been running it for 5+ months now, very smooth & few, if any, FC or freezes, and, Angry Birds running nicely on it, same with YouTube videos over WiFi connection (my 3G is on Edge network, so speed is SLOW and thus very choppy due to broadband speed, not CPU-related)
If you are running KWBR nicely now, do a Backup from CWM first, wipe cache/dalvik & system next - then flash the EU Rom and setup - to see whether you like it. And, if you do - follow the post's steps that I wrote up a while back and get A2SD running with the earlier verison of CWM for ext3 partition, restore/copy back all the files to the mSD card - and reboot/check for A2SD functionality, hopefully - it works without further tweaks - and I think you will like it.
If not, it's easy enough to get back into Recovery, wipe clean it first (very important to clear all traces) and RESTORE the KWBR image from the mSD, and reboot - and you can continue using it. Set aside 2 or 3 hours to do this slowly & right, and you will find the process educational & informative - and, as I always remind newbies - the rules are simple - Backup, Backup and Backup !!
Cheers & go have fun !
