Hi guys
I need ur advice
I am looking to a tablet
I already own Notion ink Adam, but it is suck tablet
I am confused between Flyer or to wait foe Transformer 3G
So can u help me to take my decision
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

I have a Flyer and a Transformer. I feel a bit stuck with both...
Flyer pros: 7in size, good batt life, scribe pen.
Flyer cons: Micro sd card access blows, could be a bit bulky to some, screen small for video next to a 10 in.
Transformer pro: Like a Netbook, but without the fail of windo$e, doesn't get hot like a pc because all the parts are in screen, many features any other tablet won't have, sd car slot, keyboard w/batt built-in, Big screen for video, up to 16 hr batt life.
Transformer cons: software from Asus blows namely the browser, bulky with keyboard, charger cord short.
It's up to you what works best. If the flyer had an sd card slot iwould probaby have sold my tf.

Flyer 10 inch coming soon ! Wait for the same

It does have an sdcard slot. You mean one easier to access?

Micro sd, not regular sized sd and yes, mentioned the fail access too.

I would recommend to wait a while, because as you can read in this

thread the Flyer has a big problem with compatibility, from my point of view. I can not say anything about this for the Transformer, maybe someone else can.

Not "coming soon", the Jetstream has been out for a couple weeks now.

While a nice looking tablet, its quite expensive ($700 on contract, $850 full retail), and a 7" tablet and 10" tablet are very different animals. Obviously, you get much more screen real estate on a 10", but its also much less portable.

Any Android device that does not have a phone function is going to be missing Market apps that have phone features. The intent is to prevent people from installing apps with "broken" features (features that don't work on their device). I haven't found compatibility to be much of a problem. Only a couple apps I typically use on my phone, are missing for the Flyer, and there have been other comparable apps.

Maybe it is just my Flyer, but if i look inside the Market with my browser and getting an "app not found" message for nearly 50% of the new introduced apps. I consider this a severe compatibility problem. Please see attached pics.
If i can not use an app because it has one feature "call support" and therefore needs a phone function then i think Android is on a wrong path. If i want to be patronized i would have bought an ios product. Maybe someone can check if his Flyer finds those apps and prove me wrong, then i will be very happy and can return my Flyer to get a working one. A nice example is tunein radio. I have installed the app but now it has disappeared from the market. I am not sure what is more annoying for the user. A not working phone function or disappearing apps depending whether the developer adds a phone function or not.
Please don't get me wrong, i love my Flyer but i think HTC had not thought this to the end. The missing phone function is, for my point of view, a great mistake. When i am looking for a pizza delivery or a cinema with my Flyer and then i have to pull my phone and type the number from my tablet screen to my phone a lot of the usability of the localization dependent search is lost. And compared to the other tablets the Flyer is very portable so i see no reason to carry a second device.

Might be a regional issue. I'm in the US, and off the X-ed off apps in your first pic, IMDB, NFL Rivals, Sweet N Spicy, Live Holdem Poker, and GroupMe are all listed as compatible with my Flyer. Sprinkle is listed as not compatible with ANY of my devices (my other device is an HTC Desire Z) since it requires a Tegra chipset (which the Flyer obviously does not have). Of the apps on your first pic, WiFi Finder is the only app that is listed in compatible with my phone, and not the Flyer.
On your second pic, SoundCloud, Official Rugby, Groupon and Workout Trainer are all compatible with the Flyer. iTriage is compatible with my phone, but not the Flyer (there is a tablet version, but it is also incompatible with the Flyer). NFL '11 International is listed is incompatible with all my devices, and says "This item cannot be installed in your device's country". The US version of that (NFL '11) is only compatible with my phone, and not the Flyer, probably since one of the permissions is "read phone state and identity".

Thanks a lot for cross checking this for me. Now i will contact my provider (where i bought the Flyer) and will ask him why my Flyer is so different. This is really weird.

If you visit the market on your desktop computer (and presumably on the tablet's browser), it says whether the app is compatible/incompatible with your device(s), and you can click on it for details (just below where you click to buy or install, on the left side of the screen). The reasons given for the incompatible apps varied for me from "This item cannot be installed in your device's country" (NFL international version, but US version was compatible) to a somewhat vague "This item is not compatible with your device" and "This application is not available for your carrier".
Do you see any pattern to the reason's for incompatibility? For some apps, it just may be that the developer does not support all regions/countries.

@ redpoint73: I figured out that somehow my content filter was set to lowest level. I do not how this could happen. The only thing i know: It wasn't me.^^ Thanks for your help, HTC Support was less helpful. Now the situation is a little bit better. But it is still annoying not having the possibility to use Whatsup for example, just because it offers the function to call your contacts. For me an Android device needs a phone and i think i am not alone here.
@ bmw-boy: Therefore you need to know the used band in Nigeria.
Here you find the HTC Flyer specs:

According to the following webpage, the carrier Airtel in Nigeria uses 2100 MHz for 3G:
http://www.worldtimezone.com/gsm.html
And according to the specs Kutchulu linked to above for the 3G Flyer, it is compatible with 2100 MHz (which is also the 3G band used in most of Europe). So it should work on that carrier in Nigeria.

Don't know if anything I posted was actually very helpful, but your welcome!
I'm not familiar with this "content filter". This isn't a feature of your Google account, or the Flyer itself, is it (because I don't see those settings anywhere)? Is it a feature of your carrier?

And a new source confirmes HTC Flyer: http://www.amobil.no/artikler/new_source_confirms_htc_flyer/80880
Wow this looks pretty nice. More specs on the device would be nice. But I'm all for HTC devices.

Very nice device!
Any comparisons with Xoom?
The Xoom ( for purity ) or this seem like the only ones I am interested in... all depends on price though.

I like the tablet and inovation htc has put into the software and hardware but the battery life is only 4 hours of video playback compared to other tablets like galaxy tab which is also 7 inch which is 6 hours and the bigger xoom and a lot of others which are 8-10+. That has really let it down for me =[. My bet the problem is the the processer is a hungry one for battery not like Tegra 2 and other types.
I can used like mobile phone?
A Dutch webshop also added the flyer to there products for €699.
It's a reliable site, and they have a pretty good relation with HTC.
However there is some false (HDMI connection) and some premature (2.4 ice-cream) info so I wonder how accurate the price is.
Well the OS does look totally different. I know its sense but its completely different
http://www.htc.com/www/product/flyer/overview.html
Scroll down to 3d fun at every turn. Given the processor I am really not gonna complain about battery life

It would also be VERY important for HTC to commit to Honeycomb otherwise, there is no way I would spend that amount of money on something that could be obsolete so fast...
If HTC tablet could have the sound quality of Cowon products, I would be all over this thing...
I thought HTC were joking when they said they're realising a tablet without Honeycomb. And that ugly sense. I mean it looks good on the phones, but on the tablets.
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA App
I think it's smart. The XOOM won't ship with flash because it's not ready for Honeycomb. Also, Honeycomb isn't designed for stylus input.
The version of the OS is not as important as the features and the experience IMO. If the experience is right, then I am gonna have one!

To follow up on the last post, does the Flyer do 3G on At&t? Thanks for the heads up on the voice option.
Does anyone think the price is a bit steep for a single core non-Honeycomb tablet as per previous postings?
I am looking to get a 7" tablet usable on At&t with 3g and voice in the next 3-4 months.
I ranked them as follows:
1. Acer A100
2. HTC Flyer
3. Viewpad 7.
What do you guys think?

Regarding 3G, i believe that will be there. But for AT&T that is another matter. The EU version will have it, but not sure what HTC is planning for AT&T 3G.
Regarding price, I have bought my devices from CLOVE; See: clove.co.uk/htc-flyer. Their price for HTC Flyer is GBP 466.
As far as final specs are concerned, I inquired from HTC about a HDMI output through the microusb and their response yesterday was.

I was a bit puzzeled by this response, as I was speaking with HTC not some marketer out in WoopWoop ! Go figure !
Final specs will be known soon.
I think there are a few other great tablets that will be out soon. Like the Motorola xoom. Some people are saying that the Flyer cpu 1.5Ghz although fast is not as good as the Tegra 2 chip......which many new tablets are incorporating and many are saying the same thing, although all agree that the os and software may not be up to speed to fully take advantage of the Tegra 2 chip, but still produces fabulous results.
But what I like about the HTC Flyer is two things. One is the forum here at xda-developers. There is nothing quite like it. Secondly, relating directly to the device is the stylus application. I have seen several good videos on youtube on its functionality and I really like it for the kind of things that I am involved in. So, it's a unique feature that no one else offers. I will personally find it very useful.
However I really like what some of the other tablet manufacturers are doing with having a full USB port on the device as well as a HDMI port.......that's cool.
globalgpj, thanks for the info. Like you, I don't usually buy a device unless it is supported by XDA with custom ROM. I currently have the G-Tab with the newest TNT Lite ROM. It is fast and I love it. Without voice or 3G, I have to bring my phone to tether which is a bummer. I'll wait until summer when all the devices hopefully will be announced or released. Thanks.

[Q] Is the new HTC Flyer really worth it?

Hey guys
I have owned HTC devices since the G1 n now i have the mytouch 4G rooted running Evil SD lates 2.3 port for it.
I wanna invest some money in a tablet. The MYT4G has a good size screen but sometimes it can strain your eyes when watching movies or heavy internet surfing. I want a portable tablet with the latets software and some of the newest feature. I have t mo. Here in the states. So the WiFi version of the Flyer is the only one available yet..
I have a questions. Your answers will help me deacide to buy one.
1. Does the Flyer have the ability to connect to a phones hotspot? Meaning if I tether wirelessly
2. I know there is no phone calls capabilities, but can you skype and quik?
3. Does it have a SD port?
4. And based on your experience with the device do you think it will be rootable in the future?
5. Also how does it sound? The speakers and w a headset is it real good.
Thanks I have many more questions but i think these r the most important for me. Any other things you think I should know prior to buying I would love to hear em.
Thanks for reading
Hi
Yes to all of those, I have the 3g model, and love it the form factor of it is perfect. I've played with quite a few 10" and they aren't for me.
The only down side I can see to flyer its a touch heavy, but its no heavier than any tablets out at the moment, I just would preferred HTC to have put HTC on a wee diet.
The CPU is fast, the only slow down I've every had was first boot up whilst my apps where caching.
The speakers aren't great great, but there not bad, you could listen to music or watch a movie, saying that if I was listening to music I'd probably hook up some speakers.
But really loving the flyer.

To answer your initial question, it really depends on what you are looking for. If you want a 7" device or the ability to write digital notes, highlight and mark on books, PDFs, and websites, or need to sketch/draw on the go, then yes, it is worth it simply because there is no other device that would allow you the features that the pen does. And if you are in the market for a 7" tablet, I would say it's the best 7" out right now.
To answer your other questions:
1.Yes, I have T-Mobile and have had no problem connecting it to my cell phone wirelessly
2. I was able to download Skype from the market; I don't use Skype, but I'm assuming it shouldn't be a problem. Could not find Qik in the market.
3. MicroSD port, yes
4. I've never rooted my devices, so I cannot say.
5.The sound is pretty clear and loud (this is based off watching videos, I haven't listen to music on here). I don't necessarily like the placement of the speakers, I thought they should have them on the both sides of the device for a more balanced stereo sound. But I'm into audio, so that's just my thought. But they are clear and can get loud when the volume is turned up to the max.
I have a few videos on my YouTube channel, CheckThisGadget, going over the HTC Flyer and doing the pen test. So that should help you in making your decision also.
Great device, as other have said.
In addition, as HTC release firmware updates I think it'll get faster as HTC optimise Sense and Honeycomb is supposed more efficient.
It lacks phone functionality..
They made a change to the market which causes my apps button to be accesible only by menu button.
A Lot of software available trough other devices ain't accessible by the flyers market.
HTC Watch sometimes works , sometimes not.
All by all .... I think a lot of work on the rom has to be done. It's not worth at THIS moment in my opinion.
To the OP, yes to the inquiries. I feel rooting will be dependent upon popularity of the device. Speakers are what you would expect from small compact drivers... A bit tinny, but okay.
IMO, the pen integration sets this device apart from other tablets. HTC did a good job adapting apps for pen usage. I used it extensively at meetings during the week, and it was impressive. If you don't have a need for the pen then, there are better options for tablets out their... Again in my opinion.
Thanks for all your replys
One of the post did make really consider what I wanted it for, n its basically to replace my phone in terms of web browsing n media player. I like to call using my phone I really don't see why I woulnt want a tablet to make a phone call. LOL but the 3g will make it real independent.
I'm not to crazy bout HTC scribe but its a very nice feature since I do go to college it would be great for note taking.
I also looked at the notion link tablet. Idk if its out or what but it looked great.
Thanks again for all the helpful replies I think I'm 95% leaning towards HTC flyer than moat devices.

I too considerd the Notion Ink a while back but decided against it due to the tablet coming from a small shop in India and support may or may not be up to par. Plus ordering one put you on a list as units were being built.
As for browsing the web, the Flyer is great. I enjoy surfing the web more on the Flyer than my Xoom. I have not had one force close on the Flyer yet which I cannot say for the Xoom. Tabbed browsing is missing for now but Honeycomb will fix that. The speakers are pretty good, not great. You can download an equalizer from the market that will help when using headphones.
Overall, it's a nice device and suits my needs perfectly (web browsing, email, occasional games)
Yes its worth it, it is the only true multi function 7 inch tablet on the market.
I got mine two days ago in Hong Kong and I'm really loving it! It cost ~USD 700 (for the Wifi + 3G version w/stylus). I have to say it's the perfect size and the screen resolution is perfect for browsing! I would say it's worth the USD 700 that I paid for. Now I just have to get a 3G data in China...
I'd say it is worth it. I rarely use my laptop now because I enjoy using my tablet for browsing, email, etc. I did buy the Scribe pen but I actually rarely use it. Maybe if there was more functionality for it (handwriting recognition, more app support) I would use it more. Still feels decently polished although I do miss Honeycomb and being able to download those true tablet apps.
I personally think, that if HTC engineered their Flyer tablet with Stantum display it would be a Killer device, a game changer. Seriously - a resistive display, that supports 10-finger multitouch is awesome. Notes, drawing, photo editing, CAD software on small screens, and, if it was used in a smartphone - imagine using your phone in winter without getting your gloves of. Hm, dreams, dreams...
Hi
The old sceeen question.... I presonally own a pair a gloves with special tips for using screens in winter....
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using XDA App
If the performance of the resistive is anything like the old WM phones, then it wouldn't be an improvement. If you want a resistive screen android tablet, there are plenty of Chinese mid-tablets out there.
10 point touch sounds interesting, but why? Some of the app gestures requiring three finger touch is confusing enough.

I have a fire, thinking of the view/flyer

I was thinking of sending the fire back for the flyer/view, the HTC has a leg up on almost everything, however I am stuck on a few key features that the fire has, and I would like to know if there is some sort of port, or if HTC built these things in..
The fire has updates for it every few months so far, so its live, since the HTC flyer/view have been cancled, will they get updates??
The flyer/view have the "book sharing" built in, this is a nice book club feature that I like.
and the amazon silk browser has the reader view, BIG winner in my book... any way to do this on the HTC device?
I just want a handy device to read and watch some shows, prime is no big deal since they dont have what I want to see anyway, and I have Netflix anyway... I should also mention that I have a Galaxy note, so I dont "NEED" cameras or anything like that. I just need a nice responsive 7" tablet for reading/web/youtube/Netflix with a bright clear screen..
what do you guys think?
I'm not all that familiar with the other features you mentioned (book share and reader view), but as far as updates, I've found myself not needing or particularly wanting firmware updates for my Flyer. This is coming from a person who constantly changes the ROM on his HTC Desire Z phone to get better performance and features. I have never even bothered to put a custom ROM on my Flyer, the stock ROM just runs so smoothly, and has all the features I need.
I did do the upgrade from Gingerbread to Honeycomb. It added some more tablet-friendly interface layout, bit more eye candy, and much better pen support. It runs just as smoothly as GB. Really more of a personal preference, either GB or HC run rather nicely (fast and smooth).
I haven't found myself wanting anymore out of my Flyer. The performance is great, and I haven't had any significant bugs to speak of. There does seem to be a issue with GPS maintaining lock in HC (but I never use my Flyer for navigation). But of course, that isn't even an option on the Fire, anyway.
I haven't personally had a chance to compare side-by-side. But I believe the Flyer is more responsive (clock speed matters more than dual cores, for most tasks) and has a better screen than the Flyer. What you do get in the Flyer (in addition to the Prime-specific features you mentioned) is probably better support from 3rd party accessory manufacturers, as the Fire already has a healthy customer base, while the Flyer really doesn't have much to speak of.

The updates you're talking about with the Fire are overwhelmingly updates to Amazon's proprietary software, not the underlying version of Android. The updates the Flyer/View have received included proprietary changes, but they're accompanied with updates to the Android software. So it's difficult to compare the updates of the two since the nature of each are different. That said, the Flyer/View already has far more functionality than the Fire ever will do to its hardware and access to the Google Play Store (still sounds weird to say that instead of Android Market). No amount of updates to the Fire will ever get it to level of things the Flyer/View can do. The Flyer/View may or may not see any more official updates (no one here knows for sure), but it's already on a higher level than the Fire as it currently stands.
I assume with book sharing you're referring to the lending of Kindle books. You cannot do this with the View/Flyer with Kindle books you have purchased from Amazon. It's a feature exclusive to Kindle devices. You can install the Kindle app on the View/Flyer and have full access to all of your books, but you can't lend/borrow and you don't have access to Prime library.
By "reader view," are you implying that the webpage is reformatted to allow you to more easily read the text? If so, there are ways of doing this on the Flyer/View. It may require a different browser or app, but it can be done.
Overall, the Flyer/View is a more well-rounded device than the Fire from a hardware point of view with GPS, cameras, and optional cellular connectivity (depending on the model). The quality of the screens are both good, and both devices feel great in the hand (although I like the feel of my View better). The View is better from an Android point of view with full access to the suite of Google Apps (Gmail, Voice, Maps, Play Store, etc.), something that the Fire does not have (quite possibly the biggest software-related point in my opinion). On the other hand, if you're heavily invested in the Amazon ecosystem, and your major concern is reading (including the lending/borrowing of books and accessing the Prime library), the Fire offers more options direct from Amazon. If you're into custom ROMs, the Fire also has a much bigger developer community with a lot more support. But as far as an all-around device for "reading/web/youtube/Netflix with a bright clear screen," the Flyer/View is by far the better device in my opinion.
For me, the answer was simple - a regular Kindle e-ink reader for books (including lending/borrowing and the Prime library) since it's far easier on the eyes anyway and can be read outside, and the View for everything else (plus I can read almost all of my Kindle stuff on the View if I don't have my Kindle close by). The incredibly low prices on both devices make owning both a viable option for many that want the best of both worlds.
"I should also mention that I have a Galaxy note, so I dont "NEED" cameras or anything like that. I just need a nice responsive 7" tablet for reading/web/youtube/Netflix with a bright clear screen.."
The screen itself should be about the same between the Fire and the View.
I was getting ready to get a Fire, then considered a Nook Tablet, then a View. Here are the main advantages of the View over the Fire:
-View has physical volume up/down buttons
-View has a microphone
-View has 2 cameras.
-View has 32GB of storage and a micro-SD slot for up to 32GB more.
-View has GPS
That's off the top of my head.
If the Fire does a good job for you with books and videos, you won't really gain anything by switching to the View.
If you want a tablet that is much more capable and runs a stock Android go for the View.

A major point that I overlooked in my post. As for the Flyer, it comes in both 16GB and 32GB varieties with the 16GB version being far more prevalent in my experience. Both have expandable storage as well.
"I assume with book sharing you're referring to the lending of Kindle books. You cannot do this with the View/Flyer with Kindle books you have purchased from Amazon. It's a feature exclusive to Kindle devices. You can install the Kindle app on the View/Flyer and have full access to all of your books, but you can't lend/borrow and you don't have access to Prime library."
No thats book lending.
When you're reading a book, there is a little bubble at the bottom. When you press on the bubble, it takes you into a conversation list with other people that are reading the book. Much like a book club. I think that is a neat feature.
I think the kobo at the something like this no?

No, there isn't an option for this in the Android Kindle app that I see.
That's not a huge deal...
So the htc screen wont be much better? I know the duo core thing is not a big deal, the hitch runs fine from the videos I've seen. Any word on ICS? One last thing.. can you take pretty good notes on the flyer? Is it like the galaxy note?

The screen difference will be marginal at best.
No official word on ICS.
Yes, the Flyer/View use the same basic technology (albeit from different companies I believe, meaning the Note stylus won't work with the Flyer/View), so note taking is very similar if you have the Scribe. I also had a Note for awhile and found the View to be more precise in that regard.
Wow really.. I think my note is pretty accurate, so the flyer must be nice! I'm going to best buy in hopes of finding a demo.. or maybe sprint..

They've been discontinued at both Best Buy and Sprint I believe, so it might be difficult to track down any display models in a store, especially that have a Scribe sitting there to use with it.
I've had other people contend that the Note is more precise, but I found the View to be when I had both devices. So chances are, that really means that they're both pretty similar when it comes to accuracy.

It may not be in the Kindle app, but it is there in the stock HTC Reader app which I understand is powered by Kobo. I have not used it because all of my ebooks are from non-drm epub sources so while the HTC Reader displays those books perfectly, it does not allow me to use the share option.
Anyway to read the kindle books on the kobo app? Reason I ask is that kobo has a nicer UI.
I did find a demo at the sprint store, I liked it and found the screen to he a bit more vivid, I wish I would have had the time to really check out, unfortunately we were on a way to a movie, so I had maybe 30seconds with it. Can anyone cement on the speakers, some of you have had the fire so maybe you can give me an idea of the sound quality of the htc vs the fire? I think I'm gonna buy the HTC, I just need a little push lol..
All of you have been a great help.
Just to throw my thoughts in:
I am a college student and I have an internship in an office. I bought the flyer at the beginning of this semester to take notes and other various things at my job. I have used it for a few months now, and I can say that I don't even carry a notebook any more. It has also fully replaced my netbook. I have read several books for class on it, and it has worked well as far as that goes. The speakers are pretty good quality, I find them acceptable for Skype calls and YouTube videos.
Sent from my mobile typewriter with tapatalk
the flyer/view has basically one of the greatest displays for reading for its highest pixel density of android tablets (ipad 3 has a much higher resolution tho), and great color production for things other than reading. i love my htc flyer, and i would recommend it, the reading experience is still fantastic even if it lacks fire features, because htc adds their own (such as book sharing, as you mentioned)!
Similar Dilemma
I'm in the same boat, torn between fire and flyer.
For me the flyer was an extra $40, so is $40 worth:
bluetooth
2 cameras
512meg extra ram
8gb extra storage
microSD card reader
a microphone...
Normally I say, yes, of course it is, however of those, the only one that actually matters to me... might be the microSD card reader and extra storage, seeing as the fire only ships with 8GB.
Why are those other features not important to me? Because wherever I have my tablet to use, I will 100% of that time have my iPhone 4 in my pocket which has 2 cameras, 32GB storage, a microphone, etc. If I want to take a picture, i'll certainly use my phone before my tablet, same with skip or voice notes, or voip for that matter. If I had a stupid phone, of course I go with the flyer, but with an iPhone, maybe I stick with the kindle fire...
Another consideration is rom updates, yes flyer is popular, however each rom needs to support all that extra hardware, and often one piece either uses an older/supported version of android, or one piece just doesn't work. For example bluetooth for voip, or the hardware buttons of the flyer. With the Kindle it doesn't have much extra hardware, so not much else to support, therefore the rom updates that come out are more "clean" in my view.
I'm forcing myself to use both for a few days this week and make up my mind. The stylus could turn the tide to the flyer though...
We'll see...

You are 100% in my boat! Lol the flyer will cost me about $50 more, and you and I have the same train of thought. I have my galaxy note for EVERYTHING, and with me, my gnote is almost as big as the tablets of topic! Lol
I found the speed to be more or less on par with these two tablets. And the htc reader app is a joke, the fire has a better "reading" atmosphere with the ability to change font and word spacing, and the silk browser reader view is a BIG home run.. I still can't shake the feeling I should just get the flyer.. lol

The Kindle books are DRM-protected, so unless you want to find a way around that (something we can't discuss on these forums), you have to use the Kindle app for Kindle books.
The Flyer/View have pretty darn good speakers for the size of the tablet. I can't think of a time when I wasn't more than satisfied with them.

You don't have to use the HTC Reader app (although you can adjust the size of the text in the app). There are several different e-reader apps in the Play store that let you adjust font and spacing (and I know the Kindle app will at least let you adjust the font). But the biggest advantage to using the HTC Reader is that it has full integration with the Scribe pen. On Honeycomb, you can use the Scribe with any app, but you'll only be able to use some of the advanced functions of the pen with apps that are optimized for it.
You're definitely right about the Fire having a better "reading atmosphere" though. That's its primary purpose (along with watching video), so Amazon has put a lot of significant thought and design into it. The Flyer/View is very much a multi-purpose device, with the focus spread throughout the device instead of on just a couple areas like the Fire. That's why for people who want a device that is primarily going to be a reading/video device with most of the content coming from Amazon, the Fire is definitely a great option. But for those who want more than that, the Flyer/View offers many more options.
I just won a like new htc flyer with case and scrib pen for $212 shipped..
Dude, demonoid has all the books u need, the flyer reader app supports the pens and its unbeatable bybany other tablet, om taking notes all the tome, signing documents etc

How Bad are these Bugs? Should I steer Clear?

Hey guys,
I own a sensation with stock JB and LOVE android and google's interface to death. I need a laptop for school to take notes and the transformer fits the bill. I keep reading about the wifi bug and am wondering how bad it is? Is it just some devices or all, will I have trouble connecting to networks like a busy library or somewhere weak/loaded with users. I dont really care about GPS, I have my phone with a data plan for that. I was thinking of the tf300 but am worried about breaking the glass and I get the feeling it is fragile as it is not gorilla glass. The infinity is a little out of price range although I am considering trying to buy a used prime from futureshop with extended warranty(owned by bestbuy) and return it and hope for the prime
I dont know about custom roms but Get the Prime only if you're satisfied with casual gaming or browsing, using the prime for school work is just like placing yourself at the edge of a cliff, you'll never know when it'll crash, screen glitch or have a random reboot. File transfers rate using a thumbdrive is dirt slow. The best advice is to wait for the jellybean release and to examine the results and make a decision from there
I love my prime its my 6th but I've finally got a good one. If u get one check the screen very carefully...

People who use a custom rom with some tweaks are very happy with it. I use stock and wait for JB. If that does not fix things - I will just install a custom ROM.
Rooted user with ATPTweak and Browser2RAM here. I am very satisfied with my device, using it for college classes and it didn't fail me once. It is great to take notes in SuperNote. Combine that with a camera that is actually good enough to "screenshot" the board from afar and you've got yourself the perfect educational device.
I don't have any of the issues described by other users, except for the occasional ANR when updating apps and using the tablet at the same time.
Very Happy
I bought a second hand one from Craigslist that came with the keyboard. I could not be more satisfied. I know the GPS does not work but I have never needed it. It may reset itself or have an ANR a few times a week, but I game, surf, watch videos all on stock with no problems. I constantly put new ROM's on my phones, so I am sure it could do it on the Prime, but I have never had the need. As to the wireless, it is a little weaker to pick up than say my HTC Sensation, but not so much that it is a problem. My daughter has the Nexus 7 with JB and I think the Prime will only get better with JB.

Exact same situation here. I'm not sure that I would still buy it at the same full price today, seeing how close in specs the Nexus 7 is, but it's still a really nice device.

As for your original question there is no WiFi bug. On many primes there is a physical manufacturing issue where they did not get proper contact between the antennas that are on the glass side of the device and the ground points with the backplate. Is causes the signals to attenuate at fairly short distance from the router. Don't buy it if they don't let you test it against another tablet unless you plan on opening it up and fixing the issue.
As for what everybody else says, yes stock software is buggy and annoyingly unstable. Jelly bean seems to fix most of what ails the prime. Again I wouldn't buy one unless you plan on voiding the warranty and unlocking for a custom ROM.
Your last sentence bothers me about getting the prime cheap and trying to exchange for what I assume you meant to say was an infinity. Why not just switch the price tags in the store or even easier, steal one?
Its the keyboard

One thing I didn't see anyone mention is the keyboard dock and how its (to my knowledge) unique among Android tablets. The keyboard dock has a usb port that works with everything I've thrown at it including flash drives, track balls, external hard drives, mice, usb card readers, and a usb wired Ethernet adapter. I can also use multiple usb devices at the same time using a small usb hub. About the only issue I've had is if I try to use the wired Ethernet and the external hard drive at the same time. Both work individually and also when used together with a mouse, but I'm guessing they draw too much juice to use at the same time - but that's hardly a limitation. As far as usefulness for school work/note taking etc, I would think the dock and its capabilities offers a huge advantage
As far as buggy software, many or most of the complaints I see seem to revolve around the built in browser - which I have basically never used anyway. I use Chrome and Dolphin and don't have any problems.
My WiFi also works more than adequately. I don't get as good a speed as I do with my Dell laptop but I get better WiFi speed than I do with my Droid 3 phone. So it falls in the midrange of my devices. At work, my office is on the other side of the building from the wifi router with an elevator shaft and a bank of metal file cabinets between me and the router. No device gets a very good signal at my desk. But even in that worst case environment, my prime gets a good enough signal to get my email and do light web surfing - which is as good as any device can do in that location. Its not a problem at home at all. It's not a speed demon by any means but I'm not trying to download huge files with it either (as some have said they do). Since I have a variety of devices available including a desktop and a laptop, I'm not sure why I would choose to do things like that using a tablet anyway. For a big download I'd probably do it on my desktop while I do other things with the tablet. Also, I'm guessing you probably don't need to be doing bit torrents and take notes in a class both at the same time?
Which brings up the question of weather its going to be your only device? If you have a regular computer (either laptop or desktop) I would not worry. IMO there are some tasks that tablets are just not well suited to and I don't see how a student could get away with any tablet as their only computer anyway.
All that said, here are a couple of points:
1. buying it specifically for the purpose of returning it is reprehensible. Don't do it. This sort of behavior is part of the reason electronics are as expensive as they are for everyone else.
2. Given that the Transformer Infinity is out and offers all the same advantages as the Prime, the only reason to go with a prime now is if the price is really, really good. I would say that to be reasonable, a used prime would definitely have to cost less than a new TF300 - since the new TF300 would have a full warranty. Unfortunately Amazon has $324 as the cheapest used prime while I would say no more than about $250 would be a good price for a used one (not including keyboard)
3. You could consider a TF300 which once again offers the keyboard dock with all its advantages for around $300 not including the keyboard.

thanks guys..... Why I am buying it is because I want something to take notes on at school in class and when reading chapters in books. I use to have a macbook pro that got destroyed taking it to school on my bike everyday, now I own a Levano Y580... (beast of a laptop btw for a great price) but do not want to lug it around and want to just keep it at home. my last two questions are with note taking apps like the one mentioned, Can you save these notes as DOCS then open them on your windows pc in word? also can you use google docs offline like you can on windows on your prime?
also what are the common issues I should inspect in regards to hardware issues?

Well, that's getting to more a matter of what software you want to use and how you want to take your notes. Handwriting recognition does not work for me...not on the prime and not on anything else I've tried. Even things that work for others don't work for me. My handwriting is so terrible that it just doesn't work. So I can't speak to that. And I absolutely despise on-screen keyboards as well for anything other than web surfing etc. So the keyboard dock is the biggest reason I chose the prime in the first place...though what works for you is for you to decide.
As to typing notes (which I assume is OK with you since you said you used to do this on a laptop) there are a number of options. You mentioned knowing Android well so I will leave it to you to pick apps that do the job for you. As far as what is on the machine as it comes out of the box, there is Super Note which I don't particularly like. There is also Polaris Office which handles Microsoft Office documents quite well in my opinion). Any 10 inch screen is not going to be that great (once again for me) to do detailed editing, but matched with the keyboard dock it works great for typing notes to be saved as Word docs and transferred to the PC later. However I mostly use Polaris office for reading documents others have sent me.
What I actually use for notes most of the time is Ever Note so that my notes get auto synced to my desktop PC. These can be easily copied and pasted to Word Documents if I wanted to though I rarely actually do that.
As far as Google Docs, I don't really use them but I don't think you can get at them off line (i.e. with no internet connection)
As far as carrying it around every day, well, the tablet can get broken too. So if your Mac Book got "destroyed" then I'm not sure a tablet will fare much better...a lot of it is made of glass after all. But if you are set on a tablet, I don't think the Prime is any more fragile than any other.

But I'll leave it to you to browse the forums and decide for yourself.

Nexus 7 vs HTC Flyer

How much faster is Nexus 7 compare to HTC Flyer for real world usage.
I've been using Flyer for about a year now and it's seem to be very slow to me, especially when surfing websites.
Can Nexus handle flash better with Quad cores and all?
I want to know if it worth giving away my Flyer and buy Nexus 7. If it's not too much different, then I'll just keep the flyer.
I've had both and TBH with my Flyer being overclocked to 1.84 GHZ I can notice no difference between the two in smoothness when browsing, tweeting, reading..etc
That said though, JB and quad core does make a difference ofcourse, especially when games are concerned.

I don't know about the Nexus 7, but for your Flyer, you may want to try the Puffin Browser off of the Android Market/Google Play before you buy another tablet. It sped my web surfing up tremendously. The company suggests trying the free version of the app first.
Also, u may want to search Nexus 7 + flash. I've read that it doesn't natively support flash (not certain), but hopefully that's nothing that a downloaded app can't fix.
I have great browsing with Boat browser.
Trust me its a huge speed difference. You guys saying its barely noticeable are just lieing to yourselves. Its like comparing choppiness to butter. Yea there similar alright. Cmon now.
Aside from speed the flyer has a full 7 inch screen in complete use (gingerbread only) and a nice pen function going for it.
yeah gotta agree with you. nexus 7 is faster. That feeling when I use my brother's Nexus7 and then i go back using my flyer ><

Im in the EXACT situation haha
Flyer good...Nexus incredible!
I've had my Flyer for over a year and have been fighting rom issues since then, it is workable (except GPS...Shame on you HTC for not fixing this!). Side by side -I've had my Nexus for 3 days now, the nexus screen is brighter, better contrast- whites now look slightly yellowed on the Flyer. Nexus speed is much better(expected), BT, GPS, & WiFi all operate flawlessly. I am using a usb adaptor cable from Amazon ($2.00)! to further expand storage and also connects to other devices for file transfer and viewing.Battery life on the Flyer was a solid 4.5 hours with constant video loop running- I expect 2/3 to twice the run time with the Nexus. I have a rooted-32g Nexus...couldn't be happier at this point!
Final note- I side loaded Flash and it works well with Firefox Beta.:fingers-crossed: Update:Boat browser is very fast and stable, I usually have to reboot my Flyer a couple of times a day due to lag or sometimes freezing...not so with the Nexus.
The two aren't even comparable. The N7 blows the flyer/view4g away in every aspect. I have the Veiw4g and the N7, and I don't even use the view anymore. It's so slow and crappy, it's not even worth it. If you are thinking about getting the N7, just do it. The flyer is dated now, and it's not going to get any fast no matter what you do.
Oh, and as far as media consumption goes, the N7 can actually handle everything I throw at it. I can't even watch my vulkano in anything more than low res on the view. But the N7 I can put it to it's highest quality setting and it works great. Same with Hulu, and Netflix. As well as streamed content from my HTPC.
I've played with the N7 at stores and it's pretty nice.
If Someone gave me one for free, I probably would use my flyer drastically less.
However, as much as I want project butter on my flyer I find that it would probably be a waste of money for me to personally upgrade. I'll still do the same stuff with either device.. Browse web, facebook, read books, and avoid pulling out a netbook when I can. So it raises the question why upgrade if I have a perfectly working device?

You sir are corect N7 blows but not Flyer away but simply BLOWS; with no SD card, no stereo sound, no vibra, no front camera, no pen, no HW buttons; so wjhat extra from cpu and scree is there left at all? No sim?
So that means:
limited to no small amount of space
Cant do videocalls (good luck with mirrors)
No silent alert wheil in classes, meetings ect...
Less screen
ect ect...
For mine usage of device it BLOWS unlike Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 wich is quite nice; more up to date device then Flyer and has that "magic" JB/ICS, wich Flyer doesent; but even with the JB ports we do have for Flyer we have more working hardware then Nexus have. And good luck with rearlly suported tegra games.

Umm, they are coming out with a 3g N7, you realize that, right? The sound between the two is comparable, as I HAVE both. Is having vibrate really necessary on a tablet? And it has a front camera, just no rear camera? I'm beginning to wonder if you have even used the device. It has a front camera specifically for video calls. HW buttons are a matter of preference, but not a necessity. The pen I will give you, but when you can't even get HTC to FIX the crap they broke with the update, IT"S NOT WORTH DEALING WITH IT. I will never own another HTC device after HTC screwed us over on the tablets. (not to mention the year wait on getting ICS on my old Tbolt, or 8 months for the rezound I bought) The SD card missing is a downer, but there are many workarounds that it's not a total loss. There is WIFI storage sharing (so I can use the 80GB I have on my phone between it's 64GB sd and 16 internal) Then there is USB OTG.
So that means:
limited to no small amount of spaceYou are not limited, just not as easy to add storage as with the flyer/View
Cant do videocalls (good luck with mirrors)This is just flat wrong
No silent alert wheil in classes, meetings ect... Really? It doesn't have a LED, but it does still "alert", just on screen. How many alerts do you have set up on your tab? I have almost none. Mostly calendar appt's and such.
Less screenHow? If there is a difference(16:9 vs 16:10) its a matter of a .1 inch or so.
ect ect...

I don't play games, but I haven't seen anything it can't do yet. I would like to know how you figure there is more working hardware on the JB ports to the flyer/view than the N7? You have a rear camera/SD card. that's it. I have both. (actually, I have all three. View/Flyer/N7. The flyer is my Fiancees. and I have the View/N7.

i am in the same exact situation. i have a device that serves my needs (well i could benefit from bluetooth on the JB rom) and i keep looking for reasons to justify upgrading

As nothing is NECESSERY - i simply love them and missing them on SGTAB 2. Hiting HOME when u in full scree app helps a lot with time and pressing.

I cant give u sdcard to share u mine documents with is prity common on all mobiel devices. U cant film your gf or take pic of her, u cant draw or handwrite, no way to listen to quality music since onlly suporting 1 chanel insted of minimum 2 for stereo.

CORECTOMUNDO - u did figure it already with rear camera working SD slot but u forgot the pen and hw buttons we have stereo sound as well on JB and vibra working. All this is working on Flyer loaded with JB and is something N7 wont EVER have. Never Ever.
All i am saying is for what i need tab N7 sucks. Now if your onlly use of tab is a bit faster browsing i guess N7 is a winer buy. I unfortunally expect more. And there is much N7 does simplly not offer. Its not cheap for no reason I wont go into ghosting and cracking screens...

Right under his name it says "Location: Velenje"
I'm guessing his main language isn't english.
Pro-tip: Don't ask him to fix his english.

Yeah, I still honestly love the build quality on the flyer and it still has a relatively nice screen.
Since you are on the JB rom, I need to ask did they get the screen to turn off properly yet? That was the only thing holding me back personally. As long as it has good battery life I am really considering using it.

if you are referring to the backlight remaining on after locking the screen - it still occurs quite often. however, if i turn it on and off a few times it eventually completely turns off (can be quite annoying) i am really not sure of the battery life as i basically keep the flyer charged.
P.S. I recently had a few random reboots ( but only once while I was actually using it ) and it won't play HD YouTube - not that big o f a deal to me
Nah
