Well, my goal for the upcoming v2.0 of my aGPS Patch is to bring support to five more devices. This is one of the devices I selected!
I'm looking for some testers to see if the patch will effectively work.
It simply replaces gps.conf in /etc/ to be much better performing.
You can download v1.3 by clicking here.
To install, use Root Explorer or ES File Explorer to copy the new one over. Reboot. Give GPS a try! I recommend GPS Status. If your device uses ClockWork Recovery, you can simply flash the ZIP.

Also, I'd love for someone to send me the gps.conf currently on their device.

Attached is the gps.conf in my P500. I'm not sure if it's the same as original gps.conf in LG's stock ROM, since I'm currently using a custom ROM (andy572's Phoenix with Gingerbread 2.3.4), but IIRC Andy didn't tweak the gps so it might be the same.
I can't flash the zip (using AmonRa recovery, disabled verification) but I'll try using File Expert to put it in /system/etc/ later.
I've had word a week ago it worked swimmingly with this device...

I've changed the gps.conf. Nowhere near an rigorous test, but my results using GPS Status are:
Before - Fix in 112s, 5-6 satellites, didn't note the error
After - Fix in 28s, 7-10 satellites, error 5-10 m
Seems to work. Will try your note #2 and test in more locations later.
Do you think it'll do any good if I add my country-specific server (id.pool.ntp.org) to the file?

Country specific NTP servers aren't necessary at all. Your device should get an NTP server near you and quickest for you from the NTP pool by default.

Well, open up the app once it's installed. Let it run for a few minutes and let the GPS learn about its fellow satellites near you. You should see 5-10 satellites depending on your location. After that, exit the app. Reopen it after a few seconds, see how quick the lock is. Further, you can see the Error accuracy on it as well.

Did you actually try this one? Or are you just stating that?
Kind of a new newbie question. What do you guys have on, to lock in your locations? When I have data or wifi on, I get lock in seconds but when its off I rarely ever get a lock. GPS should work without having to have data or wifi on. I'll help out with the testing.

Gps will work without them yes. But agps will not. This will use agps data properly with ntp time servers to obtain a quicker and accurate lock.

Once all the data boxes on the app are filled in with data obtained for your location, you know you have a lock.
Also, once it looks it will flash a message at the bottom in the center saying the lock time. Mine will flash like 3 secs. But it won't stay on the screen but of another second or so. That's why I say see data filled in...

Okay, so do you prefer test data with or without agps? I'm asking because with agps I get a lock very fast even with the standard GPS conf...
That is, between 5s and 12s...
At least it isn't negative. So I think it's releasable because it can help users with problems. Any opinions on that viewpoint?

Use a testing app like GPS Status from the Market. Or, open up Maps when you're outside and see if you get a quick lock on where you're at. First time takes a bit and that's why I recommend GPS Status to let it "learn."
The flash failed for some reason. It said there was an error. So I tried to just replace the file using ES File Explorer, but it would not allow me to replace or delete the existing gps.conf file. I'm not sure what to do...?

There seems to be a tradeoff for me. I'm getting a higher error with your gps.conf, but I get the first fix instantaneously (fast enough that GPS Status doesn't bother to report the time) vs. ~10 seconds with the gps.conf included in my ROM. Both of them were able to lock on to up to 10 satellites, but the error was definitely lower with my original gps.conf.

Again ROMs matter...kernels matter...and overall hardware matter. Why mess with something that works?

i've just posted in mik's rom discussion thread:
sometime ago i posted here about gps problems. people were facing the same problem: not getting any satellite in view after first use of gps. clear/update agps solved the problem, but only for one following try.
then, i replaced my gps.conf file for this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953630
i downloaded the one for brazil (my country), that was on his server. fix now is very quick, even though sometimes my accuracy is like 2km, but under 1 minute it's normal again (5~15m).
also, i've noticed sometimes it gets a fix with not even one satellite in view. this causes a huge offset in my position (imagine being in germany and your gps telling that you are in UK). but after a clear/update agps the problem is gone.

I tried the listed instructions with little success. Then I tried the "warm start" selection and get very quick locks with more satellites in use than ever before. Ill try navigation and see what happens with continuous use.
Yeah, just keep testing for yourself. The problem allegedly is one of improper caching so the warm start may end up screwing you - see satellites but not lock. The cold start may take a little longer, and you need 3g.

I don't know if this is relevant, but there is an app called gps booster that really works in less than ten seconds to acquire a lock on gps. You may want to check it out...
It's legit because algorithms are used to estimate gps satellite locations.

First of all i want to apologize for my bad English is not my native language but I'll try to explain as best as i can.
Well i just found out my clock (time not processor clock) goes faster. No ideea if is only my phone or is a firmware problem. In like 2 days i get 1 minute + to time with or without network synchronization.
I set my time let's say today from my computer at second precision and in 2 days i get +1 minute at least on my lg device.
I use v10n firmware not to many installed applications (I am sure applications have nothing to do with my problem) and if u guys need more information let me know, I'll be around.
Anyone have same problem?

I have to adjust the time on my phone every few days, because it goes faster like you said, around one minute every 2 or 3 days. I'm on v10b or whatever firmware version is void #alpha based on.
I think we can say this phone "is ahead of its time".
Kudos to you guys for noticing this xD Never new this problem existed or something, since I have mine automatically synchronize once I connect to the net.
I'm on a different ROM, so that may also be a reason why I don't see it.
I have same problem (but only about 10 or 20 sec during 3-5 days). I solve this with help of app called ClockSync with auto synchronization enabled.
Yep this is annoying relay i think i will write LG support for this. Tbh never meet someone with P500 not to have this problem.

Some operators provides sync service via their GSM network.
Anyway I didn't find sync app which can synch time without root.
It happens to me too. The clock adds 20-30 secs every 3-4 days. Very annoying since I can't count on the clock. I can point you similar problem - the GPS. After I use it 4-5 times it doesn't locate me anymore 'till I reboot the phone. After reboot I localises me immediately.

I have the problem too. But my phone is just "in company"- I have many devices with bad "real" time clocks. My opinion: the 32.768kHz clock crystals nowadays are totally crap
But if I tell android to sync automatically it does not sync at all although the first time I "fired the phone up" it worked...
I turned on autosync - it does not help.

Because Noejn had done some tweaks with GPS in his void. You can ask him what he done and if it was "your problem" related. I'm using void and I have no problem with it.

I think that this is a hardware problem (bad crystal)- so keep up with clock sync...

Hi was wondering if anyone has similar problems to me with the GPS not getting a fix. Most of the time it functions fine with Google navigation but there are times like tonight when it cannot get a fix. I downloaded the GPS status app from the market which showed only a couple of satellites where visable and it would lock on to any of them. I then went in to the tools part of the app and reset something called a-gps data (whatever that is?) Then I clicked the download link and it received some data. After that the GPS got an instant lock and has been fine since.
I just wondered if anyone else experiences these problems and if so how do you fix it. My nexus s never had a problem getting a fix I'm just curious as to why I'm having problems with this handset
Edit to say I updated to the latest maps yesterday so I wonder if that has anything to do with it?

makes a world of difference. get a lock within 5 secs normally as opposed to upto 5 minutes!
just remember, if you flash a new rom, the conf file gets replaced. i was convinced that the rom i was on was causing poor gps until i replaced it with a backup off my sd card
So does this require root tommo? I haven't had chance to go through the whole thread yet as I'm not at my computer. I'm not rooted so would have to go through that procedure too

Hi, I'm new here, but I figure my question is as good as any other. I recently became proud owner of the Xperia Neo MT15, which is now rooted and thoroughly protected, but I noticed something about the GPS and Network Location that bothers me - each time I enable either one, it asks me to agree to anonymous data collection.. Well, I don't agree, and I see no reason why I should be denied the features, because of my belief. So my question is this - does anyone know which system apk controls this? I would really like to impose it some restrictions using Pdroid as to stop the data collection. Any input is appreciated, thanks.

Nope. Not the culprit, since I don't even have it. I do however notice a lot of calls for Network Location from com.sonyericsson.learningclient(which sounds logical) and devicemonitor(which sounds just suspicious). They start actively operating as soon as I enable GPS. I've disabled the access to most things for both and set GPS and Network Location data to be served as random. I don't think there are any other moles.
It's weird, because they both sound so harmless, when I look at their descriptions in the list you linked to. Maybe there's something else. I'll see if I can find anything.
Sony has a particular feeling to collect data .
Soon you will discover also that the sony Gps will not works without data at all, because is affected by a bug, and it drops every 5 minutes if you don't have data enabled.

Holy... why did I ever buy a SE in the first place?! I love the brand, and I've loved every phone I've had/used (those include K750, K850, P1i). I'll try to see if I have the 5 min. bug.
EDIT: I'm not sure if i observed the behavior or not. I didn't go anywhere, but stayed on the window with the GPS and nav software on. The software never displayed a loss of connection. I did notice the GPS icon went to it's unfixed state twice for a split second, 5 minutes apart, but I guess I'm supposed to be on the move to notice the issue. All the while learningclient would call for GPS location and be fed random data. The wifi and data connections were both disabled. I'm going for a drive, I'll test and report back.

Hm, you don't have it? You deleted it? I just run a search trough my phone and found a lot of files with idd in their names. Some are even in etc/security and in system/lib there is even one in framework
there's even one folder data/idd who also have output folder. It stores some files in there but can't figure out what trigger loging.

Hm interesting, on link above, it says it "learns user typed words for default keyboard". I just opened up dex file from that app, looks like that app is for alot of things based on some strings in side of it.

I don't remember deleting IddAgent. The other two I track using PDroid. I just enable its notifications for everything and I watch what does what. learningagent seems very keen on getting GPS location, while it's on, and device monitor calls network location every once in a while, I see no good reason why.
If you are able to unlock your bootloader, and install a custom kernel like inteks, or nightelf ones (void guarantee), question about collecting data while you enable gps just dissapear. I dont know if there is a easier way.
If I wanted to throw away my warranty, I would have done it the day I bought it. I know a custom Rom would solve the issue, but I don't want to risk it with the warranty, not yet anyway.

Now I can't check this issue now

Hi. Have the same problem. Below -165 meter, gps cannot fix until you get higher altitude. nothing helps
Today I had the same issue near Dead Sea. No problem with iPhone.
In IOS & Android the GPS is already useless since there is no proper navigation like the one in Nokia phones

What are you saying? There are very good navigation solutions for Android. Sygic, Navigon and TomTom will be released in October.

Having the same issues: below -168M, no GPS fix.
More info:
-Aside this issue, no other issues with the GPS – the GPS function perfectly, locks quickly etc (above -168M)
-Below -168M, the GPS continue to have good satellites viability (at least 5-9 are fully ‘green’), yet the data (location, altitude, etc are frozen).
-The above occurs with all GPS application i tried (several status / navigation apps).
-using other phones GPS (e.g. some Alcatel with 2.3.4) at the exact same locations, their GPS is o.k.
-upgrading from Android 2.3.7 to 4.0.4 did not solve the issue (both cyanogen)
-I tried the "[root] GPS Control SiRF StarIV" app – did not solve the issue
- Planning to try "GPS Aids" app - not sure exactly what it does/will it help...
any news? any fix for this BUG?

Didn't try to modify the gps.conf file.
Quick search on the web, seems like most suggestions to modify the file are related to improving the performance (faster gps lock) -not resolving complete lack of locking.
Do you have a specific recommendation/idea what to change in gps.conf file for this specific problem we have? if so, can you please explain
why?
(note that here is no lock performance issue here. its simply completely stop showing position below certain height)
Well, its worth a shot? But before you do, are you using the internal gps or the bluetooth gps? If your using one, try switching to the other?

I tested a GB ROM 2.3.6. It did not loose lock if coming from a high place, bit when I was already at the dead sea and opened GPS Test, it did not lock again even with 12 satellites in view and with good signal. I believe it is the GPS chip Firmware that causing the problem, so there is no fix for it.
