[Q] Is it possible to flash a kernel from fastboot? - HTC EVO 3D

I'm trying to install bcblend on my evo, but I'm dealing with the 1.50 hboot, so even though my phone is rooted (currently running Eternity 1.2.2), evidently I can't flash a kernel from recovery. Can I do it from fastboot? If so, what would the command be? I can't quite suss it out myself...my windows command line skills are weak.

Unfortunately, this method did not work for me.

You need s-off to flash radios and also kernels - correct me if iam wrong.

need either s-off or htc unlock method to flash kernels.
if using fastboot to boot the recovery and then flashing kernels from there doesnt work, the only other options i've seen for htc unlocked s-on devices would be to fastboot flash the kernel .img .. downside is you'll have to manually load the modules.
from all the posts, seems fastboot boot recovery and loading a kernel from that fastboot boot'd recovery should work.
keep in mind, you'll always have to fastboot boot recovery.img while using htc's unlock method if you want to flash kernels or ROMs which contain kernels. this is due to a limitation in htc's unlock method not allowing the boot (kernel) partition to be flashed from standard recovery mode.

Exactly...fastboot into recovery and you can flash whatever you like....works like a charm.

The method posted in post #2 was the method I had originally used - I did the HTC unlock, then followed the directions. I was able to flash a ROM, which is great - the ROM I'm using is snappier than stock, and the battery life is significantly better, but I was hoping to be able to flash custom kernels as well. If I can't, it's not the biggest deal in the world (pretty much the definition of 1st world problems), but it's frustrating. Step by step, I had done exactly what that said to do.
Ah well...not to be with this phone, unless someone figures out another way to get around the 1.50 hboot. Thanks, guys.

+1 for fastboot. Launch your recovery via fastboot and flash whatever kernel you want.

[Dev]Downgrade Hboot 1.50

Ok like many I upgraded my phone and used HTC's S-Off Tool. That means no AOSP for me
The purpose of this thread is to discuss methods of downgrading the hboot to one that allows kernel flashing, as well as keep up to date regarding development in this area.
I attempted to flash the Eng Hboot through bootloader and no dice. I also tried
Code:
C:\Android>fastboot flash hboot hboot.img
sending 'hboot' (1024 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.363s]
writing 'hboot'...
FAILED (remote: not allowed)
finished. total time: 0.365s
I also tried RUU and it didn't work either
Now its up to you real devs to try and figure this out
EDIT:Thanks to JTNiggle we have a workaround for kernel flash
Edit:
Alright, it works. You can flash an older ROM, in my case Ava's V1, and then got to fastboot and flash the kernel for that rom. It will take, and so far everything works. Wifi, 4g, 3g, voice, bluetooth, all good.
This is pretty sweet news to me, seems like there wont be as many limitations with this as we thought.
So to do this for yourself, first, download your rom of choice.
Then use 7zip or another utility to open the archive and copy out the boot.img, put that boot.img on the root of your sdcard before you flash ur rom.
Boot into recovery and wipe as necessary, then flash ur rom. When finished, while still in recovery, go back to main menu and pick advanced menu, then reboot menu, then pick bootloader.
Once it boots to fastboot usb, you can do this from a command prompt from ur sdk tools folder,
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
it will give you an output sbout being okay, and once finished, you can do,
Code:
fastboot reboot
And ur good to go, you should boot into your rom just as you would expect, happy as a clam. Hopefully this is something that will be able to be fixed along the way so that you don't have to do these steps. Heck, there may be an easier way now, but I'm no dev, so I'll leave it to someone who is.
For now, i've got an htc unlocked phone here running Ava's v1 with a 2.6.35.10 kernel and it's buttery smooth.

Just so you know you can flash kernels with hboot 1.5.
Just saying...

I used alpharev and theres no AOSP for me either!

Thats fine and all but I think its kinda ridiculous that HTC's s-off isn't really fully unlocked... The one time I decide to go the official methods I get screwed
Won't be making that mistake again..
This method also works and the flashes take:
Have your recovery image (I have cwm in the same directory as fastboot.exe to make things easier).
Boot into bootloader, choose fasboot, connect the phone via usb (turns into fastboot usb)
Command prompt, "fastboot boot whatever your recovery image name is.img" (obviously exclude the "")
So for me I.E. it will be "fastboot boot cwm-4.0.1.4.img"
The phone will boot into recovery, now, since you called recovery from fastboot, it will flash any rom or kernel like in the OP's method (i have tried it and sticks, it appears the sole fact of launching or using fastboot removes any lock HTC has left there). The advantage is, if you have a ROM that includes a modified kernel already (like overclocking and such), you don't have to extract the kernel and flash it separately.
Thanks Brandas!.
You can flash kernels via fastboot with hboot 1.5. I can confirm this I did it a few times on ny old 3d

i have discussed how to flash kernels on hboot 1.50 on here a few weeks ago...
it can be done - did it the other day as a matter of fact
fastboot flash boot boot.img
we had to do this on synergy, cause the installer script could not flash the ramdisk from the rom. after fastbooting the ramdisk..all the issues went away.
so you with hboot 1.5 we just dont have root yet?

if you have 1.5 - what i walked someone thru on synergy's chat - (that someone else copied/pasted it on here and took credit for, spelling errors and all) is this:
they unlocked via HTCDEV.COM from a 1.40 bootloader - she did this under the advise of another forum (not xda). this process involved to updating to the latest RUU/firmware/hboot/radio package, then using htcdev.com to unlock the bootloader. after she did this, she was stuck.
we fastbooted clockwork recovery's IMG file to her phone, and flashed synergy
we noticed it wasnt working correcly, so i had her superwipe, and format w/ the ext4 optimization tool - it still wasnt working correctly.
*after the 1st flash of synergy, clockwork recovery broke and refused to work, even after being re-flashed via fastboot. we have since flashed TeamWin's recovery from a IMG file using fastboot, and have had no issues w/ the recovery tool.
after i looked in to it, i found the stock HTC kernel and ramdisk was still installed.
we fastbooted the ramdisk - and now she is 100% up and running.
i personally would wait for 1.50 to be cracked to get full S-OFF, but if u cant wait, you can still unlock, flash roms, root, and fastboot the ramdisk.

You might see if you can get some help from the devs that hang out in #Thunderbolt on the andirc.com chat to help with downgrading hboot. We had to do it for the original Thunderbolt s-off method. It involved flashing the misc partition with an "unsecure boot image" I believe is what they called it. I don't really know how it works or if the same could be done with the Evo3D but it might be worth a shot.

I tried with the misc partition hack but it still doesnt work. IEF from revolutionary also tried on my friend's phone with the misc partition. Even after you flashed the edited one, hboot still reads the new version(IEF thought maybe the misc partition was being rewritten somehow at boot). We really tried everything everything he could think of. We couldnt get the hboot to downgrade no matter what trick we used
OK I understand that a kernel can be flashed after using HTC unlock method on HBOOT 1.50. That is good news. Even though I don't have the latest HBOOT and I used the REvolutionary tool to s-off my phone, I am very interested in the development of being able to downgrade the latest HBOOT. The reason? Well, if something were to happen and I have to get a replacement phone and it came with the latest update out of the box. Or, if I have to take it to a Sprint repair center and I have to unroot and go back to stock and they update to the latest firmware. I would use HTC's method to unlock, but would prefer to downgrade and use Revolutionary. I understand that they are working on supporting the latest HBOOT in Revolutionary, but from what I understand the updates patches the fr3vo exploit and other holes. I hope that just because kernels can be flashed that no one works on finding a way to downgrade the HBOOT after using HTC's unlock method.
In advance menu, there is no REBOOT MENU to boot to bootloader. is this for CWM Recovery ?

Hi Guys,
I need some help as I cant figure it out..
I am getting an endless booting loop at the htc screen on EVO 3D.. I have Kaama lightweight Kernal loaded 0.7 and flashed the Crypt0s RUU V1.4...it seems any ROM i try now i am getting this and just stays in an endless boot....
Using Recovery cwm-4.0.1.4 Shooteru
Bootloader is unlocked S-ON
HBOOT 1.49.0012
I am stumped now...
GSM EVO 3D?
Its good practice to flash the rom, boot up and let it sync, then go back to recovery and flash the kernel.
Are you able to get to Recovery?
yes i can still get into recovery.. that part is fine, so i am assuming this "can" be fixed somehow....its just beyond me now...
yes it is GSM AUstralian version running on Telstra..
If you are s-on something is wrong with that bpptloader you should be s-off. When you are s-on the kernels will not flash properly. You may be able to flash the rom through fastboot and get the kernel to stick. Search for Joeykrm's guide, I also think there are instructions on synergy or eternity post #2 for the s-on. I'd personally rerun Revolutionary and see if you can't get to s-off first though.
looking around I cant get s-off yet ob Hboot 1.49.0012..
I used the HTC method to unlock the phone....is S-OFF needed?
could I flash to a stock kernal to fix it?

S-OFF is not *needed* but it is preferred. HTC's unlock method forces you to take a few extra inconvenient steps (imagine that!).
In order to flash a kernel on an EVO 3D with s-on and HTC unlock, there are basically two ways which insure all the proper kernel and accompanying module files are loaded correctly:
1) From normal android, use my Flash Image GUI application. This will load the kernel properly.
2) From fastboot, use this command to load a temporary version of the recovery under fastboot mode: fastboot boot C:\downloads\cwm-recovery.img
Hope that helps clarify!
Joey has it right, I thought all of the HTC methods ended up being hboot 1.50. Sorry about that. Still all you need to do is the extra step to flash and all will be good. Doesn't really hurt anything but just an annoyance.

How do I install a custom rom via the boot.img method as unlocked with HTCDEV

How do I install a custom rom via the boot.img method as unlocked with HTCDEV method?
I've looked everywhere to try & find this answer myself but can't find a complete 'how to' guide on doing it? I have the HTC Flyer 16GB Wifi w HC if thats any help & i'm not rooted as the HBoot is not yet supported using the Revolutionary way???
Any help would be very well received.
Just for future reference, this should go in the Q&A section. But, have you ever used adb or fastboot? You have to flash the boot.img using fastboot.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
Whoops, sorry just realised there is a Q&A Section.
I have used adb & fastboot & have a Desire HD & have installed customs roms on that & I have been trying to install a custom one of my Flyer but can't seem to even thou I am unlocked via the HTCDEV method.
I have downloaded a custom rom in zip format, so if I extract the files to a folder on my PC, where adb etc are, & then do the boot.img from there will this then install the custom rom onto my flyer??
Thanksyou for answering.
What you need to do is download your ROM and place it on your sdcard. Flash it like you would any other ROM. Now type in 'adb reboot bootloader' and make sure your tablet is in fastboot mode. Now take the boot.img of the ROM and place it in the same directory that you have fastboot. For me that would be: c:/android-sdk-windows/tools
Now, making sure your tablet is in fastboot mode and that you cd'd to the directory for fastboot, type in: fastboot flash boot boot.img
Now just reboot and you should be running a custom ROM

Really, I don't understand why you'd go through all the hassle of using the unlock method. It's not that much extra to S-OFF and have installs work directly form recovery.

Agree also. HTC Unlock looks like a hassle all around, and warranty is officially voided.
Thankyou all for your replies & i'll try it out & see how I get on.
Had to use the HTCDEV unlock as my Hboot version is not currently supported by all other unlock methods as it 1.11.0011.
Thanks again
Unlock the bootloader has nothing to do with your hboot version, just try it.
s-off doesn't work with your 1.11.0011
so you just need
unlock-------flash cwm recovery for 3.2------flash a custom rom------fastboot flash boot boot.img(the boot.img is unzipped from this custom rom)----do not forget to wipe

Utter nonsense. The bootloader version does matter for unlock. And it is possible to get S-OFF even if you have this hboot, it's not a direct S-OFF but it is possible and relatively easy to do.

The bootloader is unlocked so it doesn't matter. In the past we had to resort to exploiting the hboot for soff but now the security on the bootloader can be turned off, partially at least. It allows us to write to the partitions except for boot. There are plenty of workarounds for flashing the kernel. Basically fastboot, flash image gui, boot image flasher, HTC dumlock and the kernel installer script. There is an automated script being worked on to allow people to downgrade their hboot but honestly most users should stay away from it until it's stable.

If you are sure that you are s-off, then follow the manual instruction very carefully to install recovery (twrp for example). If it fails, report back with the recovery image used and exact command typed to try and flash it.
And for verification. does your HBOOT screen give you any indication that you actually are S-OFF? Or are you taking someone's word for it?

Yes the screen says S-Off, the phone was my bothers phone and it was a test phone. I had to run a stock RUU to remove all the HTC test software. I'm going to make the phone a google voice only phone for one of my kids.
The only thing I don't get is, I'm s-off and should be able to flash a unsecure boot.img. after that I should then flash a recovery. But for some reason I can't flash a boot.

Boot.img is in my Android file and I do see the device using: fastboot device.

Not a lot of this made sense. You don't need to flash a boot image to be able to flash recovery and I don't understand "Boot.img is in my Android file" at all. Like I mentioned previously, follow the manual instruction to flash recovery. If it doesn't work, either you're not S-OFF or you're not using an HTC DROID Incredible 4G LTE. If, after successfully installing a custom recovery, you want to flash boot images through recovery, you'll need the engineered HBOOT by team unlimited.
