Galaxy Nexus... who's ditching? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys who's selling their GSII to get a Galaxy Nexus? I am, I have always wanted a pure Google experience (though TW 4.0 is pretty good) and the screen is really what is the selling point. Having come from an iPhone 4 to a GSII, I found the screen to be insanely bright and beautiful, but the text sharpness just wasn't the same! The Galaxy Nexus will surely eliminate that problem with the Super Amoled HD screen! In addition, I love the plethora of new features that were included in ICS and I am so looking forward to them. Just my 2 cents.

Not that much of a upgrade, waiting to see what will work on the S2..sounds like the 9100 has a NFC chip..so I'm praying Beam works..lol

notification LED = me switching
I want to see how well it works first though

Beam looks pretty sweet! ... Anyways I can't believe people are complaining about the new UI, I might be the only one who actually likes it. The electric blue is appealing to me and will look sharp on an AMOLED screen. Love the redesigned apps as well

Indeed, apart from Beam(which i giggled over for some reason) most of the other stuff was just improvements on an already great platform. I love the better integration with fb/twitter/etc with everything.

I care about the performance. Honeycomb ran like poop, and the webcast made no mention of performance so that has me worried.

No brainer for me. 720P, NFC, ICS..
It was nice knowing you GS2

I'm thinking of doing the same. I'm just waiting for it to get European bands (same as AT&T bands) and an unlock price.

Guys just to let you know, ICS does indeed have Hardware Acceleration - it was mentioned in the brand new SDK. This excites me

I thought Beam was a great idea, far better use for NFC than advertising. The screen looks great but there just isnt enough to persuade me to change. Perhaps when I see the screen in my hands ?

There is no nexus prime. only galaxy nexus
Won't the SGS2 get ICS? :|

its not ditching. I'm adding in into my other pocket! woohoo! SGS2 + Galaxy Nexus = Win forever!

am i the only one slightly underwhelmed? the screen is the only standout and I think its too big. ICS is going to get ported within weeks thx to xda. Everything else on the nexus is just equal or less when compared to the sgs2.

I think I'm with you on this one. I just can't choose between the two. Am I just being greedy? On the Galaxy Nexus I love the new screen resolution and that data usage tool. Will come in handy with all the tiered data we got going around on AT&T now.

5mp camera is a downgrade for me. Truthfully I don't want to pay the extra buck for a 720p screen that I can't get the full experience out of. I'd rather wait till it is the standard and then not have to pay royalties for it.

Not over another year, even if it is Galaxy, it is not made for Samsung itself. So, Samsung always ditches worst phone for Google, perfectise on its own products.

So, any opinion is bias if you own the device your recommend? Why would you NOT own the same device you recommend? Unless you're a moron who thinks a certain phone is the best but then buy a different one lmao
Or I guess you could be the poor chap who can't buy the "best"phone

I would recommend you to go for samsung galaxy S2....my brother has bought this phone and its awesome i found it even better than iphone..
I'll join the guys and recommend SGS2 as well. I have this phone for two months now, and the more I learned about the device starting with just rooting, flashing custom ROMs and kernels, using custom performance profilrs the more joy it is to use every day... PS the display rocks!! Only downside is battery life under heavy use but what the hell

+1 for the sgs2. This phone flies, i find myself using my phone more than my laptop it's that fast, and the amoled screen is beautiful, i wish i could throw a 60" amoled screen in my living room its that sharp.
Are you a gamer? If so, the only phone worth getting is the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play

I'm also going to jump onto the SGSII bandwagon. I have the one from Sprint and I swear I can't make this phone lag. I've tried freaking everything and it just won't lag.
Since EL12 came out and fixed the LOS and game bug crash issues, I've had zero issues with it. So I assume that the sgsII from other providers are just as good (especially the ones with the exynos processors).
SGSII FTW!!!
Photon 4G. More of a business type phone. It holds signal much better than the SGSII. It's screen is 4.3 inches and a bit thicker. Great build quality. The development side is poor though as unlocking right now will break your 4G. I can also recommend the Droid Razr.
Why guys?

Ok I will be moving to the UK next month, is this available over there?
Or should I try to get it in the US then unlock it here?
I know that i can get a deal on a plan over there with the phone vs just getting the plan w/o a phone so that may make my choice easier
Everyone keeps saying get this or that, but not telling me why really.

Well I hate
1) I cannot do anything to the phone, ROMS etc
2) I am tired of paying for every app I want to use.
3) They wont unlock it so i can use it when i travel
4) The display is as boring as watching CNN, those little squares are so stupid
5) I miss my HTC screens where I check the weather and the sun shines, or rain drops hit my screen etc. I like to be entertained by my phone and the iPhone is just so linear in that regard.

[Q] Galaxy Nexus To The Note?

I've gone from the Dell Streak -> Galaxy Nexus and am now considering going back to a 5"+ screen.
Does anyone have any insight regarding this change? I really love ICS, which is why I'm hesitant to switch, but I miss all that extra screen real estate! Perhaps I'm better served waiting a few more months until devs get their hands on an official Note build of ICS. Thanks for any help you guys can give.
I have both! Ics is way better than gingerbread. But the note is a phenomenal device! There's no other device like it! Ics is supposed to be release for the note but I don't know when exactly.

Basically the same situation I'm in. I had a Nexus S with factory ICS.
I'm basically giving them to the end of March to get ICS out (Not from ATT, I realize that won't happen, but a leak from Samsung or CM9 or something). If they don't, I'll probably trade/sell for a Galaxy Nexus, even though I like the Note's hardware more.

There's literally no aspect of the OS I can think of that wasn't drastically improved in ICS. Literally everything is better. One great example is the absolutely insane way they want you to mount as SD card in GB.
Unplug cable, go to menu > Wireless and networks > USB settings, press connect, plug cable in, Press connect again.
Seriously?
I miss my AOKP on my galaxy nexus I had on verizon, but with the deal I got I couldn't pass up the note. (they accidentally put me on a dumbphone ETF with Verizon and AT&T gave me all 3 of my family plan phones for %50, so the note was only $150) However much I enjoy my note, I miss ICS and the fluidity AOKP brought that android version. I cant wait for a CM9/AOKP/AXIOM/anything ICS Rom.
One of the reasons I like the Nexus is because I can use my T-mobile or my Red Pocket sim. I have the $30 plan with T-mobile and $60 Red Pocket plan...I love my Note..Wish I could have both..

Disagree completely. I just traded my Galaxy Nexus for a Note and couldn't be happier. ICS is great, but still has plenty of kinks to work out. Add to that lots of software needs to be updated and GB on the Note isn't so bad.

Couldn't agree more.
I too came from a device where I was running ICS and have absolutely zero complaints/difficulty reverting back to GB because the trade off is a much better device.
In the end, we're really debating a subjective issue so there's no true right or wrong, but one thing's for sure: If you're going from ICS back to GB, the device itself had better make up the difference in terms of user experience, and the Note's clearly got the goods to bridge this gap. Also, it's only a matter of time before the devs cook up some ICS ROMs that make this discussion moot anyway.

The biggest matter is not the software on this phone, but the physical attributes. After over a week with note, I just cannot get used to the size. Sure, the screen is beautifully massive and makes the Galaxy Nexus look like an iPhone but the Note is just uncomfortable for one handed use (im 6'1" and I CAN use it one handed no problem, its just uncomfortable). My main factors for going back to the Galaxy Nexus were getting my unlimited 4g LTE data plan back (for the fiance too) comfort-ability, and better reception (I literally live across the street from a Verizon tower getting 15-32mpbs download where as the Note on AT&T 4G LTE im at the very edge getting 2mpbs down on a tiered 3GB plan). Ill still certainly be jealous when ICS ROMs come out for the note, but for now ill just stick with AOKP and a spare battery with charger lol.

I hear that, and I said somewhere else on this forum that I love the Note "in spite" of its awkwardness and the funny looks/snide comments I get regarding its size, similar to what an owner of a Great Dane probably deals with each time he/she takes it for a walk down the street. lol
For me, it's just that the functionality of the device is so over the top awesome (based on my prior Android experience) that even the clear unweildiness of the device (is that a word!?!) can't scare me away.
But again, to each their own.
I just left the AT&T store with my new Note. I had the Nexus on Verizon. I love ICS, but the note is a really nice device, and I'm enjoying the speed increase on HSPA+ compared to Verizon 3B.C.
I plan on buying a GSM Nexus to have as a backup to my Note.

FML, the American LTE version is gimped! F YOU SAMSUNG! So who else is looking at the next HTC phone? Seriously, if it's not a Samsung Exynos, I'm not going NEAR it.
The official word I got from Samsung is that the specs for the USA ATT SG3 haven't actually been confirmed yet, so there's some small hope.(small.)
We have a S3 forum now
I really dont know who would buy that phone. Samsung really screwed it up. visual wise. the back looks like a cheap phone. it is round. i was really expecting something else from samsung. i had money saved for it. but im gonna take it to HTC instead and import one of those HTC one X in black. it is really a bad looking phone it looks cheap. nothing about it makes say og hot dam look at that. the i777 looks way better.

Agreed. As with every other Galaxy S line version, I expect the American version (and different carrier designs as well) to look differently. In my opinion, AT&T has always had the more aesthetically pleasing of each iteration (Captivate and our device, in comparison with the Fascinate, etc.). I'm not sure this is salvageable though lol.
In regards to the HTC One X, I guess you don't want the AT&T version?
I am hoping At&t just might release 2 again as with the Skyrocket and OG but thats looking grim. Depending on how much the At&t costs vs. the International, I might just sell the OG S2 and just import, but the S4 chip does seem fast and I am in an area of LTE.

I like the new s3. Its candy. Og Hspa + quad exynos. Not getting it tho just got my s2 last November so it would be dumb to replace this great phone so soon . Bring on the Note plus next year!
Now Im really glad I bought the OneX.
Lets hope they make the S IV better.
Now, for my thoughts on the SIII... The only thing that got my attention was that half of the announcement was all software related tweaks and improvements. But its still TouchWiz. They made TW hook into the phone deeper than ever and its ugly. I feel they relied more on software and less on hardware.
Samsung should have taken a page from HTC's playbook and scaled back (like HTC did with Sense4) instead of driving the roots of TW even further into the core. Just look how ugly the messaging app is or how laggy and ugly the photo album was when doing burst shot. If they are going to integrate TW into everything, at least make it aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
If they sell an Exynos based version in the US subsidized then I will buy it. I don't live in an LTE area and I get solid 4-11MB/s with my SGS2 which is more than sufficient for my needs. I download AOKP and CM9 directly to my phone and it only takes a couple mins and that is the only time my data speeds are taxed even a little. The need some people have for 20+ MB/s connections seems crazy to me I don't get it. I would MUCH rather have the faster CPU. If there is no US Exynos version of the SGS3 I will probably just wait until 2013 to upgrade.
SGS3 > One X.

You know maybe I'm just a fanboy but I'm sick and tired of people calling the phone ugly, like how many black square slabs do you have to see before you've had enough? I for one am for the new look, I like the ergonomic nature look of it. Sure it didn't blow me away but it's growing on me with every picture and video I see. Oh and for people complaining about TW I really think Samsung focused on the right area for the phone, it's software rather than it's hardware. I mean let's be serious a dual-core S4 would be enough computing power for any smartphone, couple that with LTE and I for one do not care if I get the Quadcore Exynos or the S4. Sure I'd rather have the Exynos Quad and coming from an at&t SGSII I know the power of the Exynos, but I think it's time companies focus on making the phones run better with more features than just beefing up the specs.

+another 1. The only reasons I'm not going to get this phone is #1, I don't have an upgrade and I can wait until S4 when that upgrade comes around, and #2, the phone is too big for me. My S2 is already pushing the size limit for me, I love the large HD screen but the fact that the whole phone is bigger than my current one means it's too big for my pocket and my personal taste. I was pretty happy with everything else they included hardware-wise, and very pleasantly surprised by all the new software features, especially because I happen to be a fan of stock TW.
Ehhhhh..... I am the biggest Samsung fanboy ever..... This phone is pretty ugly.... The screen looks alright, the back looks more generic than the Vibrant.... Overall it's ugly compared to the OneX. Average user won't tell but the display in the OneX is nicer than the pentile crap....
Clear cut instances of a company on top has nothing to prove.... Therefore puts out whatever it wants and we accept it as the best. On the other hand a company that was once great fell real hard and now strives to redeem itself.... and did it well. Kudos to HTC.... Samsung will win next time.

New from Sprint to AT&T

Hi, today I switched from Sprint to AT&T after waiting for the samsung galaxy SIII to come out on Sprint decided to get the Note on AT&T. I know the hardware on the Note is older but I really needed a bigger screen and only the Note will provide that.
What do you guys think?, did I did the right thing to dump the SIII for the Note???
You are asking this question on Note forum so the answer may be one sided to note. It's all depending on the size of the phone. If you like the big screen, there's no other phone come close to note. Hardware may be a bit older than s3 but with custom Rom and a bit tweaking, it is as fast as s3. I have almost zero lag on mine with flap rom. Most of the s3 softwares are also ported so you can find svoice, smart stay etc that are floating on xda and ready to use.

Thank you. that's what I was talking about. I like and need the big screen due to my sight. was not too impress with the SIII screen wich looks more rectangular than square. I'm punish now with a AT&T prepay phone due to an error the salesman did with my credit card wich he locked up in a transaction so I have to wait until tomorrow that everything is clear and pick up my Note.
I came from sprint as well and I dearly miss unlimited data (even if it isn't really all that unlimited). Other than that I am very happy with at&t.

FINALY!!!! I GOT MY NOTE TODAY!!!!!::victory:. I was using a cheap Go phone until my credit clear and now REJOYCE!!!!!!!!!!!.
Former epic (not touch) addict
Definitely glad to have my note, but now I'm curious what family the note hardware is in - I had assumed it was a galaxy SII class device, where do we fit in?
It is similar to the SII (S2) - the OP is referring to the SIII - that's the S3
To the OP:
Your question is based largely on opinion and not fact. Firstly, welcome. I am also a Sprint defector who left in March so I could get the Note, and hopefully, better service. So far, the service slaughters Sprint ... as does pretty much everything else.
Next, there really isn't a right or wrong answer as to what phone is better, when comparing the GNote and S III. You'll find some people who are spec whores and it doesn't matter how useful/useless a spec or feature is, as long as it's more impressive on paper or when uttered, it will be the say all to end all for them. Other people look at features that may better for THEM, regardless if technically the specs aren't as good.
Some people will like the S III because of its faster processor and better camera features and ICS. Plus, some will choose the S III because of its smaller form factor. Others (like me) will choose the GNote because the large screen is unmatched and the most important thing to me ... ICS isn't a big deal to me, the phone functions wonderfully without it. And I love the S-Pen. Not to mention I find the GNote to be crazy beautiful in design, whereas I find the S III to be relatively ugly. All of these things make the GNote the better phone FOR ME.
With all things considered, I don't think you'll go wrong with either phone. I'm sticking to the GNote series, though. I may have to look for another phone if the GNote 2 really does end up looking like the unattractive S III, and if it's not as wide as the original GNote.
^^^well said!
I also came from Sprint, and am very pleased with the note and the service.
My opinion is...........
Quad/dual core processors are great, but the average user doesn't need more than one core. Unless you're gaming, making music or media editing all you need is a decent amount of RAM. Don't let the smooth taste fool ya =P I like the specs on this phone, but the biggest selling point for me was the screen size.
Like the last guy said you will be pleased with either device Imo, but get the one that fits you.

First, thank's for your opinion. I agree with what you have said. it's a matter of personal taste. for me any phone with 1 Gig of more of processing power is ok, I chose the Note because the screen size. on Sunday I saw the SIII at the store and althou it look good did not impress me much. I still would like the personal opinions of users of the Note. any info will be valuable to me.

Has there been talk about the note 2 having a smaller screen than the original note?

Okay the Note is too big...but as much as I wanted to go to a smaller phone (the S3) I cannot. I am hopelessly hooked on it's 5.3" of screen and the pen. So be warned...

I read it's supposed to be a 5.5" screen so it will be slightly larger (different aspect ratio).
I read that the device will be slightly smaller than the Note, bit will have a slightly bigger screen. So it seems it will be more space efficient.

Slightly bigger 5.5" screen (most likely taller) with a 16:9 aspect ratio ... but the screen will not be as wide as the current Note. That was a big selling point for me. I don't want a slimmer screen.

with the great dev's we have on this phone, most of us have been running ICS for weeks/months now, so thats not even an issue.
this phone is as fast as you could want, and the screen just kills..Spen is a great tool as well, phone calls are loud and clear.
and, after suffering with Sprints horrific network problems over the last 10 year, ATT speeds and QOS are a tremendous "upgrade"
Pleasure or business, this is THE phone to have, IMO

You mean 16:9 aspect ratio? Regardless, I agree about not wanting a narrower phone even if it means a larger screen. That info actually helped me to finally pull the trigger on one recently.
My initial impression is very positive. The display is amazing, 4G is blazing fast, and an unexpected benefit has been better phone reception than my Nexus One.
My complaint is the Note seems a little laggy out of the box but that's without rooting or ROMing, just the addition of Go Launcher. And it's minor enough that I'm holding off rooting at least until the OTA ICS update.
It's practically a cliche at this point, but like everyone else, I could never go back to a smaller display. And I personally don't find the phone hard to operate one-handed.

Whats your thoughts on upgrading?

I was meant to upgrade last year, but held off to wait on the sgs4 (passed on the sgs3, stuck with my trusty sgs2). But was a little let down from what I've seen so far, from the photos it looks like a sgs3 (not a fan) but maybe in person it will be nice. So I tempted to jump ship for the htc one, started reading xda (As you do) and see posts saying the sgs4 might not get such great support from the usual suspects...that aint good.
So, if your reading this then you aint upgraded for similar reason no doubt...whats the plan? I mean, yeah I want those crazy specs, removable sd/battery...but stock roms and broken custom roms? Im seriously tempted on the htc one, however its a bit of a double edged sword, looks awesome, drop that **** and its ****ed. My sgs2 barely has a scratch.
Whats your thoughts sgs2 owners, Im still on ICS and not kept uptodate with the goings on here. I dont doubt there are awesome devs here, but if the major players dont take an intrest in the sgs4/exynos...its it doomed?
Do you wan't it just because you like to have last piece of tech and don't use even 5% of it..or you need it for better productivity in bussiness?
If first then i don't see a need for upgrade..
Dont get me wrong, I love gadgets, but i botched a screen replacement on my old hd2 (which is now my bros) so if I cant repair I will get a new one and give the sgs2 to my bro (sad to see the hd2 go tho). Anyway, Im more intrested on your thoughts if you were going to buy a new phone sgs4 or htc one? Like I said, Im not as into the whole modding thing as I used to (still like to flash custom roms tho), will the big guns not supporting the sgs4 make much diff? I would of thought so, but maybe there is talk on here?
Well i don't think i will get a new phone, but if it happenes it will definitely be either HTC One or Nexus 5..no need to give Samy money anymore..they have gone the Apple road

Yup, it seems they try to much and forget the core aspects. Just saw this, not sure how true...maybe the uk will get the qualcomm after alll (still not sure if that will make a difference with CM)
http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2013/03/samsung-galaxy-s4-quad-core-only-confirmed-for-the-uk/
What are the rest of your guys thoughts on the sgs4 vs htc one? I hate the thought of touchwiz for 18months, I would much rather vanilla android...but not sure about the htc one.
How about a nexus 4? I'm gonna check when Google i/o is. Should give a good idea of when the next nexus is out.

My S2 contract is up next month and before its release I always planned to upgrade to an S4, however since the S4 launch I have decided to go for the HTC One.
I think the S2 , especially with jelly bean is still a great device but I will pass it on to my son to replace his rubbish galaxy ace, the S3 I think will be Samsungs peak device, the S4 seems to be more of the same, meh, no real innovations on the hardware side but lots of new and gimmicky touchwizz features. I feel as already mentioned by an earlier poster, that this feels a little Apple like...... buy our phone because it's a Samsung and because lots of other people buy it..... rather than....buy it because it's a great phone...
There are, to varying degrees, innovations on BlackBerry z10 (The hub and gestures), Nokia Lumia 920 , (baked in funtionality, low light camera and the live tiles of WP8) and The HTC One (gorgeous design, Zoe, Blinkfeed, ultra pixel camera) all that interest me as an enthusiast/nerd that the S4 just doesn't seem to have.
The Z10 looks great but it's to early in its life for me to spend 2 years without so many essential apps that may or may not arrive on the device. Android has really matured with jelly bean and so for me it is the HTC One

Seriously S IV probably dosent need any custom ROM. It rocks as it is , stock. We on the S II need and want all this custom ROMs / kernels because we want that extra power and smoothness. No need to worry about developers not suporting it , in my opinion.
Now if you have money to spend buy the octo core one and be sure that at least two years you wont think about another upgrade.

if you are ok with your ver now, dont do it.
I'm of a similar opinion, S2 running well but if I can get a deal I'll upgrade. Torn between S4 and xperia Z. S2 was my first smart phone and I do like TW but I hear Sony is more developer friendly and I like the choice and freedom of flashing custom ROMs. Both phones will meet my performance requirements so will come down to cost eventually.

I would say buy nexus 4. But, if you like Sammy based roms, you can go with Samsung s4. Im using sammy rom on s2 and i would never again flash aosp/cm based roms only because of screwed drivers. Cudos to devs to what did they do but.. True project butter is still better. I would buy s4 only because i dont mind using sammy based roms, like neatrom lite. And snapdragon version of s4 might have better support because they push their sources out i think. Wait until May to see nexus 5, then decide.

Go with s4, xperia z has really low specs for that kind of device. And not that good display, its like washed out, also UI is not smooth, it stutters a lot. Better buy nexus 4 instead of xperia z.

Shamesung: no way. Not again... Sony, Moto xphone, nexus... Or apple. Will see what is the best for me in the following months.
Decisions decisions, next nexus also deserves serious consideration. Just not a fan of the black and white Google stock look.

You mean black and blue. you can flash or apply themes to make it like sammy for example. Thats why nexus is great. If i find great opportunity to buy n4 till May, i will, and if not, ill wait to see what nexus 5 will have. But right now, from devices on market, i would choose between nexus4 and s4. Htc one is good too, but that huge speaker grills on front? I mean come in, like some kid played with design. Also i saw 1080p video sample on youtube. It stutters like hell. Sure, it has great audio and its the best in low light capturing, but.. i personally dont need phone to shoot at night or in the dark. so, its s4 or nexus4.

I agree, I'll probably sign up for a 30 day sim only rolling contract and run my S2 until prices stabilise and all phones are released and fully reviewed.

I haven't made my mind up yet but it's going to be a toss up between the Xperia Z, BB Z10, HTC One or the next Nexus 5.
Specs and power are a consideration but....
Xperia Z because I miss reading a book in the bath! Possible development support and good noises coming from Sony but the same could be said for Samsung a few years back.
BB Z10 as the OS intrigues me.
HTC One for its beautiful design, BOM and form factor.
Nexus 5 for the custom appeal and all round Googleness. Strayed from the Nexus line with the S2 so might go back.
Not considering the S4 at the moment as it looks more like a S3 upgrade than revolution. Samsung played it safe, almost using the Apple model of next model releases and I don't like the end result. To paraphrase a song, "here is the new phone, same as the old phone".
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Even the best phone is only the best for 6 to 9 months before its superseded. I am even starting to consider the S3 as it's price is bound to drop once S4 arrives.

My SII is now used by my wife, and I got an III last year
The SII is still attractive and running well - I went away from stock rom to CM10.1 latest nightlies. It is running perfectly and has now an up to date Android OS - Good value for the money I think

Good to know thank you, is the development scene active over on the S3 forum? Just had a quick browse through and there is a decent selection of custom ROMs available.
