[TOOL] kTool v1.55 - Dump+Flash kernel / Backup+Restore EFS,Check if EFS backup is OK - Galaxy S II Android Development

Heya!
Some know my little kTool already, some love it, some hate it.
Well, let's try to get some more love for it

So, what does this do?
Dump current kernel (and recovery on devices having a seperate one)
Flash kernel from /sdcard/zImage
Flash recovery from /sdcard/recovery.bin
Backup EFS
(as raw .IMG dump and as .TAR archive)
Check/Verify EFS backup (i.e. compare to "live" EFS)
Restore EFS from either .IMG or .TAR
Open stock update .TARs and flash from from it:
- Modem Firmware
- PARAM.LFS
- Kernel
Reboot device
- normally
- to recovery
- to download mode
*) When you check the EFS backup right after you made it, it should show a 100% match to the current phone's EFS.
However, after a reboot, the EFS *does* start to differ a bit - that seems to be normal, during my tests the EFS differed for 80bytes more after each reboot, my original EFS dump even differed by ~150k already

Hope you like it.
If anyone has more suggestions on what would need to be checked/verified during the check operation, do tell

After doing backup I did efs backup check....
And in that it says nv_data.bin not found..
Whts the reason?

For the .img and the .tar or only for one of them?
What does it say for "mount returned:"?
"nv_data.bin not found" means a bad/corrupted backup.
// EDIT
Just saw the screenshot.
Something went wrong making the raw .img dump (weird....).
But the .tar backup is OK (100% match to the phone's one).
Hmm.... gotta investigate the .img issue some more.

Check this;
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App

OK, that helps a lot already.
The efs.img dump might be all fine and OK, it's actually a problem getting it mounted to "look into it".
Dug around some more and also found this:
Code:
2: system error (out of memory, cannot fork, no more loop devices)
"2" was the returncode you got during the check, fits with the verbose error message you get when trying the mount from a shell.
Cool, at least I know where to look, not exately sure why this happens, but we'll find out.
Maybe a busybox thing, maybe I'll bundle one with the app....

thanks for updating~~~
I have used the old one from here

Thanks, HellCat. Great little kTool you've made --- love the kernel dump feature, so more love for your app! ; )

Tiny update to v1.22.
"Restore EFS" now lets you chose if you want to restore the raw .IMG dump or from the .tar archive.

Hi. thanks for your work. I kept getting the error shown in the attached pic when on xxki4 so I flashed back to official wxki4 but get the same error.. can u help?

HAHAA! I think I found something!
Thought some more about this, behaviour/differences of stock kernels and double checked a few things in my code.
I think (i.e. hope) I found the reason for this - and if my theory is correct I will be able to reproduce the app's misbehaviour you are getting and can then fix it.
I'll make a new build tonight.

Well, in a way.
IIRC the shell command "cp" (to copy files) is not available on stock Samsung kernels, and the app just calls "cp" instead of (like for most of the other shell commands used by the app) using "busybox cp" to call/use the busybox applet of the command.
As said, I'll try, check and hopefully fix this later tonight and if all goes well will have an update ready by tomorrow

Published v1.23 with the above issue fixed
The update should show up on the market soon.

[Q] Rename CWM backups

Might be an easily answered question, but how do i rename one of my CWM nandroid backups? I've tried just using root explorer and changing the name, but when i try to restore it i get a "md5 sums don't match" error and can't flash the backup. Any tips for me?
Thanks

Uh... don't change the name, it throws off the md5 checksum and it won't flash.
The md5 is an "error checking" mechanism of sorts, and if it doesn't match then it won't flash to avoid flashing a bad backup. If you need to, just copy/move the nandroid file to a folder with a more descriptive name to help you keep organized.
I rename mine all the time. Just make sure there are no spaces. Periods are ok though. And yes I've used the successfully to restore from.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
Thanks, i will try renaming one like you said. And if it is to no avail i will just throw them in a named folder.

You cannot rename any MD5 file..
But if you download CWM Manager you will be able to backup and restore
your rom with any filename you like. This app can do most everything which
Rom Manager can do except cannot download roms or recoveries.
CWM Manager can:
It can install apk files on your sdcard
It can flash kernels
It can delete files
It can backup and restore roms
It can flash any cwm rom
When using this app for backing up it asks for filename to start with, so
naturally it opens the keyboard so you can type in a name for your backup rom.
Its a free app on the market.
Here is a link for it: http://www.wuala.com/jgmoreno75/Samsung%20Galaxy%20S%20i9000/APPS/CWM%20Manager%20v1.5.apk?lang=en
It's fully self-exlanitory and easy to use.

I use Astro File manager to rename them. Like mentioned above, dont put in any blank spaces into the name or it cant be used, until you go back and fix the name with no spaces.

Are you guys talking about the ROM Manager by Clockworkmod? Or something different...because if you are then the version I am running from the market is 4.7.0.5? Allot higher then what you both mentioned. Can you clarify.

Yes, there was an official release, but that's 5.8.0.2. This one is unofficial 6.0.0.0. Koush says it speeds up backup/restore times by 4/5%. He has implemented some new features, like incremental backups, and so on.. In this release USB mass storage is working, whereas in 5.8.0.2 is not.

Are you sure nandroid backup is not working it skips backup of system files and just makes a small backup of about 20 Meg or so the bulk of the stuff should go in the blob folder it a feature of incemetle backup.
To restore a backup you install the main ROM again
At least that's how it works on the nexus 7
4-5% faster then official CWM or then 4EXT touch recovery?

No, it's not done that way. Download the Android SDK, then open the SDK Manager and get the SDK tools(or however they are called). Then open cmd and navigate to the platform-tools folder, which is located in the Android SDK folder, and execute the given command.

Hi Tys0n
I'm confused. I have here a log mobileodin.txt from i8190 to send to Chainfire to make compatibility whit MobileOdin.
On this log there are a partition 12 modemfs and you flash the modem.bin on partition 16 (I look Your updater_script).
Because this seems not be the same thing how can I see the partitions by-name + number please?
And what is the modemfs?
This is only curiosity. I flashed this Rom by Odin and I have Your modem already working.
Thank You

Disclaimer: Flash this ROM at your own risk. I am not responsible for what you do on your device. I left this stock to provide a base for anybody that wants to use it. Mod this rom how you want. Just please remember to give credit where credit is due.
This is a pure stock rooted rom. It has items like busybox, init.d support, unsecure boot.img and so forth. No apps were added or removed. Both Odexed and Deodexed versions below.
This is using stock unmodified zImage from HTC. Kernel source can be grabbed from HTCDev when they decide to release it

Again, it's only the boot.img, not a flashable zip.

My screen looks just like above. I have tried flashing both roms and have no wifi. I have flashed the boot.img through fasboot and the radio in RUU via this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2560283 with no luck.

[Request] KitKat Nandroid backup restore for TWRP

Hello everyone,
I just bought a Note edge from Sprint and it came with Lollipop 5.1.1 pre-installed out of the box. Based on my Note 4 experience I know it's impossible to downgrade back from 5.1 to 4.4 - other than replacing the entire logic board. I need to take this downgrade so I can execute SSU to GSM unlock internationally (already donated to dev, trust me) and have @mikereidis Spirit running+recording properly. I did it on my Note 4 and it seems to work OK so I know it would work for Edge as well. I thought perhaps someone could provide a good 4.4 NANDroid file to restore from TWRP (without personal app data as I'm not looking into read your whatsapp chats or whatsoever) or link me to somewhere storing a selection of various NAND versions, I'm sure someone ever bothered to NAND KitKat, dump it and upload to web. And please spare me all your speculations about Lollipop vs Kitkat - as long as Spirit doesn't work it's kinda deal-breaker to me. I could live with NextRadio if it wasn't tied up to Americas regulations, skipping the even freqs and have too limited Stereo threshold. Don't want online streaming solutions either - I use Tunein too but it's not enough. I'd appreciate any response in advance.
I have an edge with kitkat on it. I suppose I can give you the system backup

:good:Awesome! I'd be grateful. May even pay if you want...
You bought the phone from Sprint? Was it an upgrade? Did you have to order or did you pick it up at a local store?
Sent from my SM-N915P using XDA-Developers mobile app
It wasn't an upgrade nor a contract. Just ordered for full price and had my cousin to pick it up for me.
what was full price on a phone they dont even advertise on there website?

All right! I'm gonna try it in a few hours, soon as I get home and will report back how's it going. Can't wait to try it out.

So far no luck. It gets stuck on "Note Edge" splash screen. I guess there should be more than just System partition to flash the eMMC with to boot up correctly. On my Note 4 I tick everything there is to tick and it works a treat.

Maybe not all rubrics are necessary such as EFS and Modem (it stays the latest version flashed by Odin and the same for baseband) but a complete backup template would save me a lot of frustration, unless it is too much for you to upload... *Maybe I should buy your phone, I remember I saw you mentioning it's up for sale...
i can post up the kernel. that will have it booting more than likely. what kernel were you using when trying to boot this one?
EDIT: here's the kernel https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24499762636004610
rename to boot.emmc.win

Still no go. Before trying yours I was using Emotion or Beastmode probably, the one came with the last custom LP ROM I flashed, since I had nothing other. Maybe I'm not doing right. The TWRP backups are recognized by a certain folder structure. Under TWRP folder which is located in either int or ext memory, there is a folder named "4fd5c215" or something alike, then you have folders named after a version build number and date of creations, where the actual backup files are. For instance the lollipop backup goes like "2016-04-03--06-53-33_LMY47X.N915PVPU4COG1". Do I need to place the Kitkat files in a similar path pattern intended for 4.4 versions?
I think it's your updated bootloader that's causing it to not boot

I used to think the same, but then I took that very non-risky gambling, downgraded my Note 4 all the way from newest Marshmellow back to 4.4!
Maybe these backups are unique to the very same device they were created on. I never tried my NANDs on another Note IVs
I've restored nandroids on replacement phones before without a problem

I know I'm the one doing wrong here. Do the folder structure and labeling syntax have to be accurate?
Freeza are youable to give him the full nandriod, i have restored nandriods to other phones as well however on the edge I've found that the phone starts up weird when you have remnants of the previous firmware full nandriod flash seems to work better, unfortunately i dont have any kitkat versions
