Where are the developers? - HTC Amaze 4G

So far, only xboarder is really working on this (with some possible help but not posted), and he does not have a phone. Appears someone reneged on a deal.
When the MT4G and G2X came out, there were a lot that jumped in - what is the issue here?

I don't think you know but the device dropped on 10/17 i'm pretty sure & alot of people are viewing thread's just not as much developers , there are about 2 developers here now .

Developers are having hard time to decide which device should they buy..
they got multiple choices now...
Samsung Galaxy 2
Samsung Nexus 2
Htc Amaze
Plus all the devices are expensive to its gone he hard for them to get all....

Same , i just bought the amaze as a temperary , once the Galaxy Nexus come's out i'm purchasing that . The SGS2 has a terrible screen .

Team Whiskey will be on board soon--the phone is VERY new and we need to give people some time to buy the phones before they can start cooking.

Nevermind that the bootloader / s-on is still an issue...

The nexus will only come out on Verizon for the foreseeable future - and switching carries for the phone of the moment is ------.
As for Samsung, I have only had bad experiences with their software/policies - so not going there anytime soon. LG for same reason is also an issue.

How about buying all the developers this phone at full price so we can get the roms out? No? Bad idea? Why not? Too much money? Oh... didn't think of that.

LOL

I made my point. Simply put there are few developers because there are few developers with the phone. I'm a bit sarcastic at times.

There sure is. It's expensive as hell! How many other phones are out now and how many are on the horizon? From a developers perspective they have a lot to chose from. Odds are slim that we'll get dozens of developers that are going to get this device immediately after it's release. We might get one or two at first and that's about all we have. For f#@k sake the main developer doesn't even have the damn phone! Give it time or return it. It's up to you. I am sticking with it because I see the potential and I believe that development will open up in the near future.
Examples:
MT3G didn't start getting support for about a week after Cyanogen got it.
MT3G 1.2 didn't start getting support for MONTHS because of driver conflicts and the lack to crack the bootloader (which still hasn't been done).
Vibrant... still doesn't have a stable CM rom release and it's been out for over a year.
These are just devices that I know about for certain. I'm sure there are many more.
So we've had the phone for less than a month and people are getting impatient? Why? Did you think that we'll have root BEFORE the phone was released? Just be patient. It's very unlikely that this will be the only phone that isn't going to have ICS, CM7/CM9, etc.

Great hardware, beautiful screen, and the Nexus S MAY lead to gingerbread soon. The ui is incredible and it's VERY hard to brick.
Our Dev support is amazing as well. A rooted/Rom'd Vibrant is pretty much the best it can get IMO.

It's a top-end device that should have 2.3 soon. It has the best screen and video chip of any android phone (except possibly the Nexus S), amazing for gaming and movies ... and basically everything. The contrast and brightness of this screen is unbelievable. Resolution is second only to the iPhone 4. Great dev support -- run Team Whiskey's "Nero" ROM

Maybe some hacked up dev version of 2.3, but it's not getting official 2.3 anytime soon, most likely never.
The question no one asked is what getting the free vibrant did for your handset upgrade qualification? If you can't get the full discount to upgrade for another 20 months or so, it might not be that great of a deal. The new, dual core phones with 2.3 will probably be out in February.
If it was free, and you aren't loaded, I would def keep it. I love my phone, and all the new roms coming out make me fall in love all over again each flash. I'm kind of a gadget geek, and I am constantly wanting the latest and greatest. I'm thinking about biting the bullet and getting the new mytouch 4g.

I think the general consensus on these forums would be that you need to root it, and ROM it. The stock android release that ships on it is littered with problems that power users like us can't handle, and Samsung doesn't have a thing on current vibrant developers who consistently make the phone amazing.
That said, 10,000,000 of these things have been sold and most people are oblivious to the issues on this phone. They use it and it's incredible hardware without issue.

How long to crack locked phones?

Hello all, I'm currently using a Nexus One on T-Mo but am probably going to jump back to Sprint here soon. I had been looking to get the Evo3D, but fear that it's going to be locked down as the Thuderbolt was. I understand you guy were able to gain root on the Thunderbolt recently, but only because you got an engineering something or other, I don't remember exactly. My question here is, what would the chances have been of the phone being rooted the normal brute force way. Would we have been looking at possibly months or more, or was it just a matter of days. I ask cause if the Evo3D is going to be locked down and may take months or more to crack, I may just go with the Nexus S for now.
Well it looks like HTCs phones are going to be locked up tight. Not really sure about the EVO3D but I wouldn't be surprised if it had a locked bootloader etc.

Ah, where to begin I'm guessing that you misunderstood what I said, or maybe I worded it wrong. In my previous post I was merely making a gross generalization. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love HTC for their build quality and the fact that my G2 (being over a year old) STILL puts up a decent fight against new devices. What I meant was that given a choice I will always support a manufacturer that keeps their devices unlocked (like samsung). Yes, samsung has had some pretty dismal failures in the phone department, but what about the Nexus S 4G? Not to mention the fact that according to a few websites, they seem to be learning from their mistakes and putting out great devices recently (matter of opinion though). I can't really see how my logic is flawed for wanting MY device to have an unlocked bootloader, it's just a standard I'm developing. As far as the thunderbolt getting root before release.... stuff happens unexpectedly and I'm glad the TB got root so soon. Newer HTC devices however are looking at much better lockups on their bootloaders though and I would rather not have to risk a brick to flash my heart out. But these are all my own opinions, you have yours but these are mine.

I'm in the same boat. I'm not going to buy a phone that's locked up tight. HTC better learn real quick that there are a lot of people like this. I was going to buy a honeycomb tablet if they came out with one because based on their phones I figured it would be pretty open. Now it looks like I'll have to go elsewhere. Maybe since a tablet won't be tied to a carrier they'll be more relaxed. I hope anyway...

It seems we've gone a bit off topic. I have been reading all the comments and have learned that Sammy isn't doing what HTC is starting to do with locking their bootloaders, something I didn't know before this thread, good to know. But the question I presented hasn't really been answered yet. How long, rough gestimation, would it take to crack the bootloader of the new phones HTC is coming out with. Are we talking weeks or months or more. I know this a question that can't be easily answered with a specific answer, but I'm looking more for how likely they are to be cracked in a timely manner. I'm not a hacker, cracker or code breaker so I really don't even know where to begin with trying to answer this question, hence why I put it forth here, on the forum of a phone that was locked and got unlocked hoping a dev could give me some info on weather getting the forthcoming Evo3D is a good idea for someone who want's to root the phone. I am however leaning back towards the Nexus s 4G because of this thread, but since money won't allow that at the moment, I'm exploring my options until the time I can afford a new phone.
The thunderbolt was rooted becuase we reverted to an older leaked rom which allowed us to bypass the whole signed bootloader. (I think) You might want to look into the incredible s which was released several months ago and has yet to me cracked. The security measures taken to lock down the G2 are not the same as the ones used on newer HTC devices. I don't think we'll be seeing any permanent root access HTC in a long time. Months at the very least.

Thank you, that was exactly what I was looking for. Sad news indeed. I'm guessing the Nexus S 4G is where I'm headed then, unless a Galaxy S 2 is slated to come out on sprint anytime soon that is. I've been reading around about this (disappointing) news of HTC's lockdown using signed bootloaders, etc. and from what I have read, it seems like the crackers have indicated they are going to have a helluva time. A few tweets from jcase's twiiter page (whose opinions I personally value, YMMV):
If you want root, don't buy an yet to be rooted phone
[email protected] signed recovery, signed kernel, signed hboot, and write protection. won't buy [email protected] devices like that

Looks pretty dreary for new HTC phones.
Droid, which has signed bootloader, is still locked, and it's pretty long on the market. It's a matter of years, if not eternity. It's f***ing hard to crack those keys.
What I don't understand is why HTC is doing this. You might think that it's the carriers pressuring them, but if Sammy, Sony Erricson, and Moto are or are soon going to be releasing phone without locked bootloaders, why does HTC feel the need to start now when they haven't in the past?

Atrix vs HTC Inspire

Hi im upgrading from an Incite XD and im wondering if i should buy an Inspire or the Atrix.. this question is killing me and i dont have an answer yet :S so which one do you think can be the best choice ? i will use my phone to read many stuff in the internet but i dont know what is better for this... the inpsire big screen so i dont have to zoom in too much or the atrix qhd resolution ? also the inspire is cheaper but if the atrix worth it i could buy it and the last thing is that i like to customize my phone and being able to unlock it so i can use it in mexico i think that both can be unlocked but maybe im wrong so please what do you think is the best option for me ? thanks
I think what it comes down to is they are both excellent phones but you have to make a choice between the Atrix's locked bootloader but more or the Inspire's poor battery life.
Go to your AT&T store and play with both of the phones before you decide to purchase either one. Don't let a bunch of people you never met in your life decide for you.

the sgs2 for sprint was announced. this phone was horribly placed in terms of release dates. a lot of people jumped on the evo3d bandwagon, now the sgs2 is coming out soon and not too long after is the release of the new nexus.
once the epic touch is released expect these forums to die down a lot more... unless the et4g sucks... in which we might get a few more users

once the epic touch is released expect these forums to die down a lot more... unless the et4g sucks... in which we might get a few more users

I just got the Photon and am going to work on porting CyanogenMod to it... so expect that as an option when I finish it. Not sure how difficult it will be since this is my first Moto device.
This is the first phone that I was happy with out of the box. But with development, well at my age, its better than sex! Lol

I'm out of thanks for the day, but you will get one soon enough from me I'm sure. That being said, how hard is 'porting' and what exactly does that mean? I think I get the idea but how is it done really?
I would love to learn how to do this. I am slowly getting into theming a little, but am no where close to releasing anything yet, first off I am a perfectionist and second I am just learning the basics now.
Would love to start reading up on the whole porting aspect of stuff.
/end hijack....sorry!

Porting is basically making the proper changes for the rom/kernel/theme to be compatible with another device. Just do a Google search and you can find other threads talking about it.
If you don't have any code experience it will be tough going to learn. If you are already trying to learn how to theme than this is good place to start because knowing the directory structure and where things are located will help.

Yeah I do too, but I'm not going back to big red. I think that it's a Verizon exclusive so far.

no the tech sites need to read between the lines. was there a nexus being shown off around big v's hq? yea.. wanna guess why? because out of the top four carriers in teh us they are the only ones without a nexus device..
there are rumors of verizon getting a droid prime which if thats the case yet again they will be without a nexus device (cant call it something else) my guess is because they want the hardware but their carrier bloat crap on it
The photon is an awsome phone and with tegra 2 thd games it beats my gfs evo shift hands down. I tried the evo3d and wasnt impressed. Its really buggy and likes to get stuck in 3d mode. The sales rep even told me to go with the photon which was cheaper meaning less commissions. She had came from doing repairs to sales and she said the evo3d was a waste of money and told me all the horror stories they were having at the repair center with them.
I know sprint has some phones comimg out soon that are going to be better but work with what we have first.
I found my old htc tilt and it still has more dev than the photon.
Im someone who isnt all about games. I like preformance, battery life and apps to make my day more productive.

I think a lot of Sprint customers were like me... the MoPho came out, we yawned, and had zero interest in it regardless of specs because it was Motorola... and we all knew Motorola was the essence of pure toxic TiVO-ized evil in AT&T/Verizon-land. They encrypted their bootloaders in ways that couldn't be trivially cracked, and bent over backwards to lock down everything they could.
Then Google bought Motorola, the sun came out, the birds started singing, the sourcecode got released, and suddenly the MoPho became interesting.

Why There Is No Development?!

This is just sad!!!
LG makes awesome devices, the G2 is one of the best devices available now, great hardware, great screen yet no devs or users buy it. I know its like the chicken and the egg, but still, its wired not a lot of people buy it.
HTC has S-OFF and locked bootloader, Samsung also has now that stup!d KNOX, Sony and Moto makes pretty bad devices, why devs don't develop for LG devices?!?! Why?!?!
Because no one has unlocked the G2 bootloader.
Also, it is not a popular phone.

I'm talking about LG in general. The Optimus G doesn't have a lot of roms.
Their phones are not popular, but they are awesome phones!
This thread was with rhetorical questions, I know this is the situation and all that, I wanted to create a discussion about this subject
Is there anyone actively looking for exploits in our bootloader?
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk 4
I do think I heard some people on the G2 IRC (freenode #lg-g2) are attempting, but I am not certain if this is true.
Anyhoo, no progress has been made currently.
Ha... because its been out for just over a week. AND in the first week we already have root.

Go Bucks!!!!
Everyone that's demanding development/boot loader unlock...first its only been a week since the phone was released...what did you expect every dev to go out and buy a g2...next why don't you go try to learn all the complexities that are involved in the process...just cause there's no news been made public doesn't mean things aren't being worked on. The appropriate individuals will say something when the time is right..whenever the exploit/exploits are done is when they're done...don't rush our devs, make stupid posts, and pointless threads as that will just piss some of them off...that being said things are in the works, just be patient.

Speaking of the bootloader, is there a button combo that can be used to access it? Or is there no such option on this phone. This is my first LG device so I'm feeling a bit like a fish out of water.

I suspect that Development will come once ppl realize the Note 3 is gonna be locked down pretty hard (might take as long as the first OTA to kill any exploits like the S4). Just give it time.. VZN ppl will want a Nexus 5 like device and the LG G2 will be the closest thing hardware wise to it. Just don't expect crazy dev like a flagship Samsung device or the Moto X but there should be some in the near future.

+1. If nobody knew any better they would believe it was a Nexus 5 just from looking at screen, and the LG emblem. Oh yeah, the N5 is shipping with the same hardware...hmm um Verizon LG N5 *cough cough G2*. Development will come and when it does just root. CM. And Verizon N5 . Clearly LG is learning from their Google Nexus 4 and thats what we see in the G2, lets see the difference when the N5 comes out i bet they will be virtually identical, aesthetics and hardware wise, obviously not the software.

The closest I know, and I dont think it's bootloader, is Volume up and plugging in USB. It brings up a download/firmware upgrade screen, which is also where you can see the Rooted boot flag displayed.
There mere fact that we have root (AND got rid of carrier ID) is indicative that development is happening.
Be patient folks

Yeah that's all I've found so far too. Well that and I did stumble on our hidden diagnostics screen. (##228378 in dialer). There is a field test mode there. Doubt it'll come into play for anything but never know I guess.
You know why there's no one developing on LG phones? Because people $hitting on LG phones like it's their job. Just look at the new arstechnica review of the G2. They made it sound like it's the worst phone ever made.

I don't think he was 'rushing' the devs.. Just asking why there's not much development on LG devices. But yeah, its only been out for a week, and it does seem like an awesome phone. It already has root, just give it time.

The Samsung fanboy is strong in that one. He completely blew things out of proportion, like come on, a font bug?! Then he left out how the camera was, just pointing out he got a bad auto image once. Then you read the S4 review and its like God handed it to him himself

I hate to bust people's bubble but I've been around Android and its development community (XDA) a long time and from my experience I'm going to say once a phone lacks any development at the beginning, it usually stays that way to the bitter end. Development won't magically just pick up.
It's just an unfortunate part of being in a crowded phone market with HTC, Samsung and even Sony. Developers rather develop for the more popular headsets and the LG will be on the outside looking in.
I'm not going to sugar coat this, if you bought this phone for development I suggest you return it while you have a return window, cause development....it's not going to happen.
If you fell in love with the G2 phone I suggest you wait for the Nexus version of it and then you're going to have a real development community.

John Snow, I didnt know you had a computer in the North? There are several developers who are trying/finding the best way to unlock the bootloader, what exactly did you expect the developers to do within a week without an unlocked bootloader? Yes, some developers go for only the big devices, and guess what, this is one. You seem to know nothing about anything around here, so dont go spreading lies.
