[Q] Galaxy S II GT-I9100G - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What is it with this model and those optimized games? and compatibility issues? Seriously? Would it be solved anytime soon? Or is the G in the end means i shud give up hope on my phone? Most S2 optimized games on samsungapps can't be installed

From JayceOoi's website:
In short, Samsung Galaxy S II GT-I9100 is using Samsung own Exynos 4210 SoC CPU and ARM Mali-400 GPU. And GT-I9100G uses Texas Instruments OMAP4430 CPU and PowerVR SGX540 GPU.
TWO DIFFERENT INTERNAL SPECS, DIFFERENT GPU AND CPU.
I9100G
- Doesn’t overheat easily, better battery life.
- CPU seems to be capped at 1008 MHz.
- Poorer 3D performance.
- Can’t download apps / games developed for Samsung Galaxy S II I9100 in Samsung Apps / Android Market.
- Fonts in PAPAGO! very small.
- Not much custom firmware / modification
I9100
- Overheat easily, poor battery life on Android 2.3.3. Android 2.3.5 fixed it.
- Fully use 1.2 GHz CPU.
- Better 3D performance.
- Anti-Aliasing (4xAA and 16xAA) support with Chainfire3D Pro.
- Lot of custom firmware, kernel, modification, tweaks…

i didn't get this point really... i have the G-variant and i didn't see any problem when downloading any app or game to it... am not sure if the applications are actually developed for a special mobile version, mostly apps/games are developed for "Android" and not for a certain company such as samsung or HTC or any other and neither for any model like GT-i9000 , GT-i9100 or even GT-i9100G etc...

ICS for GT-I9100G in india is available now!!!

[Q] about 3d drivers for galaxy i5800

will galaxy get 3d drivers or not?spica already got.and wokin good.what about this galaxy??this phone graphics sucking me to play many games.
It already has 3D drivers .
First, we need a source of 2.2, with all drivers. Then we can make some optimalizations, but don't think it will run every game at good framerate!
I think it will only let you play some games at better FPS (like Raging Thunder 2), games that doesn't work now (like Modern Combat: Sandstorm) I think will not work ever on this phone

But whenever i try to play HD games or Sims 3 it only gives me white textures.
Spica does not have a GPU too...
with jpf+mod jpb kernel+lagfix2 quadrant says i have opengl es-cm 1.1 which is weird since i think i had 2.0 before :S. Could it be do to the jpb kernel?
P.S. I can play tank hero which says: "OpenGlL 3D graphics"

if anyone have galaxy 5 then please check its GPU name using Quadrant sys info and share with us so that we can figure out WHY our galaxy 3 performs bad compared to galaxy 5.
Even galaxy 3 has better cpu.

i5500-Galaxy 5-has a Qualcomm 7227 processor which features a real dedicated GPU, Adreno 200, which happens to be the SAME GPU that is found in the first generation Snapdragon processors! Galaxy 3 processor is SC56442A6E, which is not better than 7227, only the max operating frequency is higher.

I just bought galaxy 551 for my brother and to my surprise even though both the phones have identical processor and clocking frequency galaxy 551 scores 373 in 3d graphics in quadrant advanced. So maybe samsung or developers can do something to improve the 3d graphic drivers.
Cheers

Galaxy 551 DOES NOT HAVE the same processor than the Galaxy 3 ! Try to compile/run a Galaxy 551 kernel on the Galaxy 3 and you'll see why i say that.

Well you might be correct on that aspect but the main problem about galaxy 3 is bad texture. compression which can be resolved via proper programing as the chipset in galaxy 3 does not require any dedicated gpu to run 3d programmes or games.but just to confirm I will try the 3d drivers of galaxy 551 on galaxy 3 as I have both the phones at my home.
Will post the results soon.
Thank s
disappointed that a lower priced Galaxy 5 has got a 3d processor while the higher version galaxy 3 didn't.

But ... It has no phone picture and it is not listed at the database being at your link as a submodel of the SG S I9000 that it is not
Samsung must use other name system for their devices
But SG S+ I9001 is a total different hardware than SG S 9000
And a lot of "normal" users will brick their phones trying to put a SG S ICS on a SG S+ and as it is being sold a lot in Spain, Germany, Russia and China this Christmas season perhaps a SG S+ ICS will be later at the "mod market"
I think it would be a good idea to put this model at the database with its own different specs and thread.
I have read some complains about this matter.
And i think they have good reasons to ask their different space not for having a similar name is a similar - in hardware - phone. Perhaps the name is because is near in the market segment but is very different in hardware.

What? You couldn't tell the difference by just looking at them anyways. The only major differences in hardware are the graphics cards and processors (and of course chipset): http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3115&idPhone2=3908. It doesn't matter that it doesn't have it's "own" forum (at least it has one).
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
All equal outside but not inside Chipset, CPU and GPU
Chipset Hummingbird Qualcomm MSM8255T Snapdragon
CPU 1 GHz Cortex-A8 1.4 GHz Scorpion
GPU PowerVR SGX540 Adreno 205
Any phone with only one of this different parts will have other ICS rom - and of course different drivers and performance.
What you say is as if you have a desktop computer with the same monitor, keyboard, mice, webcam, hdd, case, but one is Intel+Nvidia and the other AMD+ATI, the inside is very important isn't it?

GPU drivers for GT- S5830i ?

Has samsung released drivers for samsung galaxy ace GT-S5830i? As all of us know....we have a different GPU than the normal GT-S5830......i have heard that our GPU is better than the former ace'?
Any help about this would be appreciated
if this is same as SGY (which it is) then it may not have a dedicated GPU..
As far as i know the gpu is not entirely like galaxy y.Our drivers are different..I think broadcom has to release it..

Those are only incomplete kernel sources that no one got ever to boot without source modifications.
The GT-S5830i the phone uses CPU for graphic rendering and it does not have a GPU and uses 90%(with the exception of the display RAM, internal memory) of the same hardware as Galaxy Y - proof? you can boot Y's ROM's on 5830i and vice versa.

You heard wrong. The i model uses a Samsung CPU that's faster than 5830's, but because its used as a GPU replacement too the speed difference is minor

IF the Ace "i" has the same hardware as the SGY then......
CPU = Broadcom BCM21553 ARM11 832 MHz processor, ARMv6
CPU Data sheet = http://www.datasheetarchive.com/BCM2155*-datasheet.html
GPU = Broadcom BCM2763 VideoCore IV LPDDR2 128MB
GPU Data sheet = http://www.datasheetarchive.com/Bcm2763*-datasheet.html
According to Broadcom the processor/gpu is capable of encoding and decoding at full 1080p resolution.
I found this website of the SGY being overclocked to 900mhz.... he/she also supplies the kernel that he/she modified....if its any use to us.

BCM2763? Nope
The i model and Galaxy Y has Broadcom VideoCore IV HW there is not much info what is it.
And interesting fact that's useful for gaming on these phones is that it supports only OpenGL ES 1.1, just as any software based GPU, because higher OpenGL ES version is not possible without a GPU.
OpenGL ES 1.1 was used back in Android 1.6 Donut days in 2009/early 2010
The original Ace has Adreno 200 which supports OpenGL ES 2.0 and is used in the cheap version of Xperia Play and a lot of other smartphones even today
OpenGL ES 1.1 VS OpenGL ES 2.0 is the same like DirectX 7 VS DirectX 9c
Samsung like " oh my gawd, we have no more qualcom processor left to put in the SGA"
"This broadcoms thinggy looks nice"
*puts the processor into SGA*

Yeah Qualcomm stopped supporting and manufacturing ARMv6 chipsets in the end of 2011 so Samsung needed a replacement.
Maybe this is the reason my friend's new galaxy ace is on GB firmware not froyo.
It is quite a weird because she doesnt know how to use kies or odin.

The SGY and the SGAi does not have a separate GPU chip.
Instead it has a Broadcom BCM21553 multimedia baseband processor, that not only has an integrated ARM11 processor running at 832mhz, but also a separate GPU within the same architecture. The same as the Qualcomm msm7227 and Adreno 200 chip.
While Qualcom chips are classed as "system-on-a-chip". The one chip die that handles the processing, graphics processing, usb interface, camera sound.
The Broadcom classes its chip as a '3G phone-on-a-chip'. Im assuming, reading the literature, that this chip takes care of the Processing, Graphics, 2G, 3G data connection and voice data........ although it doesn't mention anything about usb interfaces ect.
It also dose mention that it supports OpenGL 2.0

Look at GL_EXTENSIONS it doesn't even support something as old as cube maps that were introduced in 1996 or tiled rendering or paletted textures and the max texure resolution is 2048.
So correction its DirectX 6.1 VS DirectX 9c.

There must be some code missing from the kernel limiting the capabilities if the chip. Damn Samsung. Which is why we don't have a complete kernel to compile.
Imagine if we had a "fully working" kernel....... It would compete with their more expensive products.
Here is an article and Youtube video I've found showing the awesomeness of the Videocore gpu (its dated 2009 and shows Videocore III not the new Videocore IV that our phone supposedly has).
http://www.geek.com/articles/mobile...-video-and-gaming-to-mobile-devices-20090112/
I think that the SGAi and SGY are a base model to see how this chip performs in the real world, and future phones made by Samsung will be using this chipset to its full potential, and that might be why they haven't released a fully working kernel.
Then again this is all speculation and i could be wrong.

[Q] Pure Google Phone or Popular Phone?

Which one is the best for community support (ROMs, mods, etc) and manufacturer support (accessories, drivers, etc)?
A pure Google Phone (Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus) or a phone that sold very well (Galaxy S II, Galaxy S III)?
Is it safe to buy a Galaxy Nexus/Galaxy SII now (solid hardware, going to survive at least two more years of updates) or is it better to wait for the next Nexus/buy the Galaxy SIII?
Maybe wait for an Android with 2GB of RAM to get better Ubuntu for Android support?
I ask this because I'm concerned about always being able to use the latest Android version, even if Google or the manufacturer doesn't release updates anymore (like the Nexus One that was abandoned, but received updates from the community because of its openness).
I have a HTC Desire Z now, and this phone is amazing, except for the lack of enough RAM to run apps and the lack of manufacturer support for getting drivers for the last Android updates.
What I really need is the best combo: community support + commercial support.
I'd like a phone with physical QWERTY keyboard, but seeing the options... I guess I will have to give up on that.
Thanks is advance!
Your best bet is a nexus. Most phones that require OEM or carrier updates will die out long before the nexus as you can pull the updates OS source code and build it for your device even if Google stops supporting it.
Sent from the Bat Cave
A Nexus will always have more community support, although the very popular galaxy line has good support also.
Thanks for your answers!
Talking about hardware, is it better to wait for the next Nexus or the Galaxy Nexus is good enough to survive at least a couple more years without performance issues? Is Dual Core + 1GB RAM the standard for the next devices?
Also, the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Nexus have different processors and GPUs... which one is the best between them?
Galaxy Nexus:
CPU 1.2 GHz dual-core Texas Instrument OMAP4460 processor
GPU Imagination Technologies PowerVR SGX540 GPU
Galaxy S II:
CPU 1.2 GHz dual-core Samsung Exynos 4210 processor
GPU ARM Mali-400 GPU
Is there any website that did benchmark tests between both processors and GPUs?
Thanks!

Do not flash anything meant for Galaxy S2, on Your Phone (Galaxy S Advance).
You will only end up with a paper weight, if you do so.
