[Q] Playing with my build.prop - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If I play with my build.prop settings is there any chance of bricking my phone?
I fully intend on making a backup of the build.prop for when I inevitably mess it up, but I don't have a full system backup if I softbrick.
The reason I want to do this is that some of the Tegra 2 games won't work on my phone because they are "not available in my region". I think that is bs, and I think modding my build.porp will help. So I want to modify my settings to trick the game into letting me play.
On that note, could anyone tell me what settings to change? The 'region' setting is a no-brainer, but anything else? There are quite a few items that indicate KR or olleh (the provider).

Worst case just flash a ROM
sent via tapatalk from my CM7 Atrix

btw - I'm stock gingerbread with root. I'm not really interested in ROMs (at the moment), I'd just like my phone to act like it's American <insert joke here >. Basically, I want it to tell the software that it is an AT&T phone in America, so that I don't get rejected because I'm in Korea. They have strange gaming rules and many hoops to jump through before a game can be released here. Hence my shenanigans.

If you have a knowledge of adb then you are fine. You can soft brick but not hard brick.

Hey guys,
I've been searching and searching and I can't really find a way to fix this problem I've been having.
I have a Motorola Atrix from Bell running 2.3.6 and I had rooted it.
I got a little power hungry since this is my first android and therefore obviously my first root, and I started deleting stuff like crazy. Unfortunately one of those things was all of the yahoo system apps since I didn't look up if they were important or not, and they obviously were.
My problem is as an attempt to re-install all the yahoo files, I tweaked the build.prop file. I opened it as a text file and changed the ro.build.version.sdk=10 to ro.build.version.sdk=9, i think it was the 6th line of the build.prop text then I rebooted my phone.
I never made a backup or nandroid or anything like that, mainly because I didn't think anything that bad could happen from it. Then I ran multiple factory resets of my phone in hopes to fix this problem, but it still persists. All my phone does now is continously try to boot up, but it just keeps restarting itself halfway through, I can't get to the unlock screen or anything like that. I feel like I royally messed up my phone, if anyone could help me out with this it would be much appreciated.
I can run hard resets using the buttons and run things such as fastboot and RSD even though I dont really have much idea what they are. So I've been trying to educate myself a little with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154600&highlight=soft-bricked+atrix and I'm finally starting to understand what I actually did to my phone.
Once again any help would be much appreciated, thanks, if you need any more information just let me know.

IMEI repair needed ;(

Hey everyone,
I already had a topic on this matter but I will start afresh since i had exams and now im free to fix my damn phone.
Initially I had ICS and I wanted to upgrade to JB, I normally format everything after I go back to stock and root it, but this time I decided to format it BEFORE going back to original, and I did it not in the settings menu but in CMW!!! I dont know what I pressed there, but I think I also pressed partitioning, final result was bricked phone.
For hours I tried to restore it to at least be able to turn it on, but even now the firmware installation doesnt go as smoothly anymore, I think I messed up my partitions, I will need help with that.
THE MAIN PROBLEM NOW. Is that I got my IMEI deleted, and all other system codes too.
Before I did any of this I made a backup with nandroid, and it has saved my efs folder which apparently is supposed to carry the IMEI
However, when I restore the back up, the IMEI does not reappear!
I tried:
GSII Repair
HC-kTool
I tried restoring the backed up EFS folder with CMW but it did not do anything at all
Please give me other solutions I am desperate, I am forced to use Nokia N73 its a nightmare in all aspects =[
great I scanned (verified) my backup with nandroid for MD5 thing and it says PASS on everything but on efs.ext4.tar, it says FAIL
please help, how could I mess up even my back up =[[
I guess you didn't read up on the memory bug issue when using stock ICS and wiping with the stock kernel. You may be SOL, my friend.:crying:

I didnt use stock ICS, I used stock gingerbread, but before i had a chance to install the gingerbread i went into CMW and deleted everything, which was really dumb of me to do but its done now.. i backed it up it works fine now, just doesnt recognize sim cause the IMEI is not there
You've tried using Odin to go back to stock?
Yes, I would go to stock first, format, root, then install new software, but this time i ****ed up everything decided to mess with CMW
Weird thing though is that I made a backup of my EFS before I messed it all up, but now when I "verify MD5" it with nandroid it says "FAILED" on EFS and "PASS" on everything else, then I noticed when I restore my phone with backup in CMW it also says that it is verifying with MD5, what I think is I somehow messed up my backup too, or it didnt back up properly, or my EFS was messed up long before I backed it up but it still kept working somehow
I think I need to somehow fix my original backed up EFS manually and then try restoring it again.. any ideas? I got the IMEI converting software for galaxy S3 from a friend on forum but i havent tried anything because im not sure whether there simply dumping the code will work for GS2.

Well, I read this "Initially I had ICS and I wanted to upgrade to JB" and assumed you were on stock ICS.
no Im sorry for the misunderstanding, originally I had gingerbred, then rooted ics, i never had official ics, i think i might have messed up my partitions too, but there is no fix for that anywhere, only warnings
Someone (champ1919) has recomented i use this method
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=881162
It involved using Hex editor and editing few lines in the nv_data.bac
unfortunately that file needs no editing as everything in it seems to be correct,
so this is not whats causing me get null/null
I need more suggestions :/
If you had rooted ICS and did a wipe you could still have the memory bug issue. Have you read up on that to see if it could be your problem?

No I haven't :/ theres so much to read its inhumane.. I think i messed up my partitions for good, what actually frustrates me about android is that It does this retarded partitions that makes no sense, it leaves 2GB for the system, the rest it calls "sdcard" when you install something it actually installs on that 2GB partition, WHYYYYYYYY???? then there is an option of transfering the program to "sdcard" which is probably the remaining phone memory, whether i am right or wrong, the system memory gets clogged up so badly for no reason that the phone starts glitching like crazy, i have never had that problem with iPhone, if this continues I will switch back to iPhone 5S when it comes out, im too tired of this crap

Android isn't for everyone. It requires a lot more time and dedication to learn if u really want to customize things to your liking. Once you've been doing it a while and have read up on most things though it becomes a lot easier. I do agree the initial learning curve is steeper than with iPhone, but I guess that's the whole idea behind android. Being able to do things your way how you like them. Good luck, happy flashing.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1596842
Dug it up from the international I9100 forum. Some people are able to repair theirs. Of course apply I777 stock Roms and not any they provide in there.
Odin to rooted stock ics 4.0.3 then start from step 3. Assuming you have your network signal intact. Worth a shot. Let me know how it goes.

I think it is a security thing. You don't need to execute movies, music, or books which should take up the majority of space. So they move those to a place you can't execute things on. And the programs must be put in the executable space which is much smaller. The logic is fine, but it isn't very adaptable (harder to change partition sizes than to just flag a file as read-only, which means it is harder to put a virus in there and execute it too). Unfortunately security features often makes things harder or more likely to fail.
iPhone vs Android is like Mac vs Linux. The first generally just works if you are happy with the Apple way, and costs a lot more for the hardware. The second lets you customize more, and can be harder to use. But you can work around issues with enough effort.

its ridiculously retarded, its affecting your experience, chance of getting hacked is 1:100 if you live in a city, and constantly sit on public wifi hotspot, and even then there are tooks that have nothing to do with your operating system to hack you, im telling you this is bullcrap im so tired of it that its up my throat

hey my friend thank you for the link, i did what he said in the tutorial, but unfortunately its just the EFS repair, in my case i completely ****ed up my efs, i dont think its even recognized by the system anymore, i need to manually punch in the IMEI, theres a tutorial for SGS3, but none for SGS2 which is another thing thats frustrating, every phone has its own solution to a problem, maybe the solution would work but i cant put my phone in the DIAG mode I WDONT KNOW HOW TO DO THAT AND THERE IS NO TUTORIAL FOR THIS MODEL OF THE PHONE
605 iesaedn
Unfortunately I can't help you... I'm in a similar boat. Trying to find out how to rebuild/restore the EFS and NV info on a phone I got to switch over to my plan.
I've had all kinds of OS on it so far and nothing works. Need to put in the IMEI, the APN, etc... can't...
Like you... I find all of the I9100 stuff... but not much for the i777
Good luck and please post if you find a fix.

For You Slow People who never do any research!!!
I just wanted to make it clear to fellow U.S. users. It is not illegal to swap a imei from one phone to another phone that are both in your legal possession in the United States. The last few years Congress has proposed legislation to prohibit this activity, but it always dies in committee. It was recentyly proposed again on April 25th of this year and sent to committee where it will most likely be tabled there again. See this link for the newly proposed legislation:
govtrack.us/congress/bills/113/hr1730/text[/url]
The Cloning laws in the United States only apply to cloning sim cards or esn numbers. Because cloning sim cards and/or esn's can lead to subscriber fraud. Which means you can actually steal someone's service without paying for it while the true owner of the sim or esn is stuck with paying for your usage. With IMEI numbers that is not possible due to the fact that is controlled by the sim card in gsm devices, not the IMEI. And as a matter of law and fact, you can clone your own sim or esn from a device in your legal possession because in that situation there is no intent to commit fraud which the cloning laws aim to prevent.
I challenge any of you "slow" people to find a law in the U.S. that prohibits swapping IMEI numbers. And, after you come back empty handed, ask yourself this question. Why does congress year after year try to propose laws to prohibit IMEI swapping if it is already illegal???

[Q] Do I have the correct apps installed on rooted phone

I know everyone has there own ways and own apps they like, people like different things and different ways to do things, I am looking for the basics, I want to know that ive not installed 2 or 3 apps that basically the same stuff, and is pointless having them,
I know that some are imperative to have on a rooted phone, and some are just to help people do certain things, here is the thing I have got all these apps downloaded and havent used any apart from 1, and only just tweaked a few basic things as dont want to ruin my phone,
ive not even backed my phone up yet or flashed a custom rom, both are high on my list to do but cant seem to find the answers out there which I know will be some were,
The thing is there is not much at all on my phone "acer liquid e2 v370" so dont want to use stuff from another phone incase it doesn't work and I brick my phone,
Anyway if someone out there can help me or even show me the door to were I can find this stiff out then I would appreciate it so much, anyway back to the question in hand, about the apps I have installed, are they the right ones? and I dont have 2 apps that, basically do the same things,
Ok this is what I have and if anyway possible anyone can either tell me or show me were to find the things I need to know about these apps,
And if it would work on my phone etc etc, ok this is what I have, 1st is supersu, titanium backup, busybox, t.w.r.p., android tuner, root uninstaller, root checker, this is it all ive got, I know everyone has different things depending on what they want to do with there android system, I just want to start with the basics and learn as I go, everyone starts at the bottom, so only way to become the best is get your hands dirty so to speak, so here I am wantinf to get involved just hope that someone out there can pass some knowledge my way as it will be appreciated so much, thanks again for your time and reading my thread, bazzaboy1:good:

How to root Sony Xperia Z2 5.1.1 23.4.A.1.232

I own a Xperia Z2 D6502 with android 5.1.1 and build number 23.4.A.1.232 which I would like to root. I have never rooted any of my phones before so I dont know anything about it. After spending much time on this forum I found this link but I am not sure if these are the right instructions for my xperia Z2 5.1.1 23.4.A.1.232.
What I understood after reading this article was that after following these instructions I would have a rooted lollipop 5.1.1 version on my phone. However I dont want this. I want any suitable(which makes my phone faster and doesnt affect camera quality) rom(I dont know much about them either) with KitKat on my xperia device.
Can anyone please help me to achieve the above with all the detailed steps as I am totally new to this?
Any help will be highly appreciated.
Follow that guide but in step 3 (Then flash the latest*23.4.A.0.546*zip file, which is pre rooted) flash your kitkat rom or whatever you want. Look in the dev section.

Which ROM you'll prefer is a personal thing, so read about the different ones, look at any pictures and try one. While looking and researching them you'll find the download links.
Having said that I'm just running a rooted version of the Sony 5.1.1 ROM, version 23.4.A.1.232 and quite like it. Sure it has a heap of apps I don't use but I'm not out of space and everything works.
I've got a few different devices with different builds of AOSP based ROMs on them, it varies as the developers for different devices vary so you end up using what's available for your device.
Given you've never rooted your phone before I'm not sure all of the advanced options of some of the ROMs will do much for you, you can spend hours and hours setting things up how you want and then another update turns up and they don't all handle dirty flashes well.
Why do you want root access and what are you expecting it to do for you?

Cant you unistall the apps which occupy your memory given your device is rooted?
And what if I dont update my device?
I also read about losing my drm keys after flashing, though I didnt understand completely what it meant.
I want to install rooted version of Sony 4.4.4 rom but after searching the forum I cant decide which one I should download. Please help.

Sorry to hijack the tread.... Did you have "full root"?
I think i'm having issues on SELinux or mounting permissions.
I can't remove system apps( w/ root uninstaller ), or change system files.
I manually changed selinux (su -c "setenforce 0"), solve it but was not persistent. Installed SELinuxmodechanger, but i think it's not fully working after reboot...

Do you have nuts deul recovery installed? Thats meant to disable RIC during boot to make /system rw, allowing you to remove system apps.

Keep reading mate. If you lose the DRM keys you can't get them back without a backup, you can't use ones someone else backed up either.
I can uninstall some of the preinstalled apps if I want but as I haven't run out of space I haven't yet. I'm also interested in seeing what Sony does with them, some I'll not use and others I glance at.
Battery life is pretty impressive for me but it varies with how you use your device. I play Ingress and if I'm out playing I get five hours, that's with the screen on, GPS and data going. Not many phones can do that.
Calls are normally clear although I've noticed that if I'm lying on my bed talking it doesn't cope very well, I have to twist my head so the ear I'm using is away from the pillow. I assume it's because the noise cancelling microphone is on the top and gets confused/muffled as when I move my head it's great. I've had people comment on how clear I sound on this phone.
I've not had any trouble with WiFi and haven't felt the phone is slow. So how are you determining that your device is slow? What is it doing which makes you feel it is slow?
Not sure what you mean by not updating your device. If you mean not updating the ROM nothing really happens but as time passes there is a greater chance that apps will stop working, it depends on what you use and if the makers of them what a minimum Android version for them. Also if there are security flaws the longer you used an unpatched device the greater the chance that you'll get compromised. It is quite irritating that we're not fully patched for Stagefright yet.
As for the original question about how to root this ROM version, the short answer is, you can't. Well not yet that I've seen.
To root the phone you have to downgrade, gain root and then upgrade to what you want to run while keeping root. You found the guide already, follow it. If you don't understand or aren't confident about doing it I'd suggest not doing it. If it's your only device and primary phone is it worth breaking it and being without a phone?
If you want to learn about Android devices in general pick up a cheap device to play with and learn on, the Z2 is still quite expensive. You could probably pick up one with a broken screen pretty cheaply online, as long as you can read the screen you can play around and learn on it. Just plug a mouse in if the digitiser doesn't work.
I used a stock Samsung GS2 for years while reading about things, then I got a tablet and started playing with that as it was just inconvenient to me if I broke it, I still had a working phone.
@clawpt I'm not sure what you mean by "full root". I can uninstall things if I want though, perhaps Matt's reply will help you.

I wasnt much confident but still I proceeded with the steps mentioned in the guide and with a little help from google, I was fortunately able to root my device. Yes, its the only phone I have but I couldnt afford a new one and I waited too long for its warranty to expire.
Can you please provide me with a source to learn about general concepts involved in rooting like flashing, busybox, unlocking boot loader, etc. I am trying to google each thing individually, but i cant seem to find a place where I could learn things in a proper order, moving from basics to more advanced concepts.
Thank you so much for your help.
I would like you to clear one more thing for me, when I followed the guide, I first flashed my device with 17.1.2.A.0.314 ftf file and then installed flashable_D6502_23.4.A.0.546.zip from the recovery menu. So what is a ftf file and what is the difference between the two steps I followed. In my understanding, both basically did the same thing, i.e., installing a new rom. Is ftf file sony specific?
Thanks again.
@berbatov93 definitely back up the DRM keys before unlocking the boot loader, it was a fairly simple process from memory.
We need more information on the sound problem. Does it happen consistently? If it isn't consistent look for a common situation when you have the problem, like loud noises, high wind etc. Have you used the diagnostics tool to test the microphone? It's in Settings > About phone > Diagnostics.
Thinking about it a bit more, sometimes there seems to be a little pause for people to hear me. I'm not sure if it's phone or network based, I guess it could be phone related while it works out the background noise cancelling magic.
WiFi being slow to connect is a better description than, "my device is too slow."
Sometimes I notice that it hasn't automatically connected to my WiFi when I get home but by the time I notice and look it's connecting. Is that what you mean?
What setting do you have the WiFi on when the phone is asleep? Settings > WiFi > ... menu > Advanced > Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep.
Everything is slow with lots of Chrome tabs open, you could try a different browser or just be better at closing tabs.
I've never noticed any slow launching with the dialer, perhaps your call history is huge? Try backing it up with an app from the Play Store and then deleting it to see if that is the cause. Each time you open it it looks at that to display it.
As you're on a stock ROM it will notify you that there is a new update. If you let it update though you'll lose root and then have to downgrade again to get it back. I just wait for the update to be available through XperiFirm, download it and make a pre-rooted flashable zip. There is a thread about how to do that here. That thread will also answer your question about what you did which seemed like flashing two ROMs, you did but in different ways.
I still don't know enough so I can't answer your questions but it looks like your Google Fu is weak. :silly:
Try this link, it won't always be the top search result though.
There are lots of different summaries about what rooting does for you, I don't want to try and summarise them for you. (I'd rather go to bed, it's 4:30am for me!)
Just reading a description of one of the various Busybox installers on the Play Store should answer that question, I bought this one. I can't remember if a friend recommended it to me or something I read somewhere, but I bought it as I appreciated the effort the developer put in for the rest of us to use. The same with SuperSU Pro.
Bootloaders are trickier, probably something you'll get better answers by reading more or using Google. These days they seem to all be locked with a way of unlocking them from the device manufacturer which lets them record your IMEI or serial number. I assume they do this so if you send it back for a warranty claim they can see you've unlocked it and then charge you to fix something you've screwed up. I've never taken anything back so I don't know.
They're something I have to learn more about too but if you find out more before me please fill me in.

Should I use this to take backup? And what kind of backup should I take to recover my device from bootloop? I wanted to install xposed on my device, but it was warned somewhere that sony devices might go into bootloop and that I should take a backup to restore my device. What kind of backup can help me recover my device from bootloop or soft brick?

It happens most of the time, even when I am in a closed room with no background disturbances.

That was a wifi issue, it just didnt connect automatically, I had to do it manually even for saved networks.

It just shows connecting but doesnt connect until select the network. Keep wifi on during sleep was enabled.

Then maybe its a chrome issue.

I needed 4.4.4 pre rooted stock ROM for D6502 but cant seem to find it anywhere. I read the steps in the thread you mentioned about creating a pre rooted ROM, but steps are not explained in detail for someone new like me. I am also scared a little to try something new on my device as I am already facing a few problems. Can you provide me with a link with much more detailed steps?

Will sony be able to fix my device in case I screwed up and bricked it?
Thanks.
@berbatov93 I'm sure Sony will fix it if you pay them too!
Hopefully it won't come to that though, they're pretty hard to brick because of the way they've set things up. Even if you soft brick it you can power it off, fire up the flash tool and then hold volume down and plug USB in, press flash and it'll put a base Sony ROM on for you. I've kept the D6503_17.1.A.2.55_Generic AU 1281-9715.ftf file on my PC for just that reason but I haven't had to reuse it yet.
I don't know of any other instructions for making your own pre-rooted zip file, it took me a fair bit of reading and looking at menu options to work it out the first time but it's pretty easy. You won't screw your phone up with it as it will fail before you get it to the phone if you do it incorrectly. As with most things in life you have to learn from experience, just follow the instructions with the programs open so you can refer back to them. You could try Google for better instructions, I'm not sure if anyone wrote something more newbie friendly.
As for the WiFi problem perhaps a different ROM version will sort it out, also you might want to get all your data off your phone and do a completely fresh install on it and see if that sorts it out. The backups people talk about as Nandroids are done from in the custom recovery, have a look in there now you've got it working again. I'm not going to reply to the other thread as I see you did it all again.
I doubt there are any pre-rooted 4.4.4 still around as most people have moved on. There's probably no need to make a pre-rooted one though, one of the root exploits works on it so you could just download, via XperiFirm, the 4.4.4 you want and flash it, then root it. I've never downloaded a pre-rooted ROM as I'm overly cautious, I'm not even keen on using the one click root programs as I can't read what they're doing!
You could call it a Chrome problem but I'd really call it a user problem. Like I said originally you could try another browser and see if it copes better but they aren't really designed to have lots of tabs open. Each tab takes up memory, so you'll fill it all up and then it will start using virtual memory but eventually it will crash. It happens on desktop computers too, I've got 8GB of RAM in my PC but Chrome eats it all up if I open too many tabs.
I don't know what to do about your mic problems in call, I'd take it back to where you got it from and see what they say. But I'm pretty sure you've waited too long as you indicated it was out of warranty which is why you've started looking at root options now. If you've been having problems for a while you should have taken it back before you lost that. It's still worth asking the store/phone company about it though, just make sure they don't go charging you anything to fix it without asking you about it.
You might just have to chalk it up to experience and live with it. Never be afraid to ask for things to be looked at while the warranty is valid, it might be inconvenient but if something needs fixing it's better to use the warranty than pay for it.
The other option would be to use a headset for calls, I picked up an SBH52 and I'm pretty happy with it. As long as you don't lose or break it it will work with whatever phone you end up replacing your Z2 with.

The Saga of my Razr Maxx HD

Greetings all,
I had a Razr Maxx HD for about two years. loved it. Then one day the date and time stopped syncing. I spent weeks trying to fix it, scouring the internet and tried every possible fix I could find; from fiddling with airplane mode, soft/hard resets, replaced the screen (found several people who claimed this fixed the problem) and I even went so far as to flash a Verizon ROM onto the phone I grabbed from the net. (VZW_XT926_4.1.2_9.8.1Q_62_VQW_MR-2_VQW_CFC.xml)
I've been using a backup phone for a while now but would really like my razr back. I have nothing to lose at this point so I'm willing to try anything. Assuming this is a software glitch and not a hardware problem, I would like to completely wipe out the phone. Like EVERYTHING. I don't need anyone to hold my hand but would appreciate it if someone could post some resources that I can read through/follow. Googling the topic brings up alot of info on unlocking and rooting. I feel like those are things I might want to do on a healthy phone that I just want more control over. I want to do the equivalent to my phone of what I'm familiar with on a PC. (format HDD/creating partitions/loading OS) Don't know if this is even possible with a cell phone.
Any help would be appreciated.
Edit: so my understanding of a Kernel is that it manages communications between the hardware and software. I have wondered if something went wonky with that and if I can flash a basic android kernel/OS onto my phone to see if it fixes the problem. Forgive me if I'm not using terminology right.

Help.... please

Hi, I've got an INTEX Aqua Prime 3G smartphone. At first everything seemed to be fine, but two weeks after buying it popup ads started to show up and apps began to install themselves (Activitys and such......). As I've read, it seems the rom comes with malware itself, so it's not like I fked it up, it was already a mess from the beginning....
Things are: I rooted the phone cause I thought maybe I could get rid of the system apps that were provoking this. I deleted a lot of apps just to keep having the same problems with popup ads and self-installed apps. It does not go away.....
So I thought I could install a new ROM. Here comes the problem... I can't seem to find any rom for this phone (along with any info... it's like it doesn't exist for some reason).
Could I install a rom which is designed for other smartphone but with the same processor as mine? I'm just super confused, super tired and I don't know what else to do with all this.

Thank you so much por replying. I've seen the video but my problem is not about not knowing how to flash it. There are no roms for my phone it seems.... so I was wondering if I could install one that it's not made specifically for it... also I can't risk bricking it as it's the only phone I have, so I just really don't know what to do
It seems like I lost the money

Don't think so. Probably a slim chance to be able to port, but you still need system files from your rom, and a custom rom from a phone with same resolution and cpu. Might be a chance, (I don't know how much you messed up your /system, but maybe still have the files you need)... Search Google for 'port rom xda'...
