Droid Razr on AT&T options? - Motorola Droid RAZR

I like most of the people want a Droid Razr, I also prefer being on AT&T instead of Verizon and know that a global version of this phone is available. Two big things that always seem to stop me from buying an unlocked phone for use on AT&T is that you don't get OTA updates or a manufactures warranty.
Just wondering if anyone has heard of this coming to AT&T like the original Razr's or if there is anyway to receive OTA updates and some type of warranty while using the phone with AT&T.
Anyone else planning on using this in the States on AT&T?

there is a warranty.
if u have bought it in the UK or any other county, and if u found any defects, u can send back ur device to the shop (i think u will need to contact them before doing it) via mail. they will fix it or just replace and send back to u.
but u will have to pay all tranfer fees (round trip)

you will be able to use the Rogers version from Canada. They use the same bands as AT&T. Will just need to get the phone unlocked.

How would I make te purchase from Rogers? Still no OTA though and definitely no warranty if purchased from Rogers right?

It's taking longer than I had hoped for AT&T
I'm coming from an iPhone background, and noticed at least one thing for concern. If you have an extensive music library, you'll notice that your music needs to be streamed from the cloud if it won't fit on the device.
I purchased the unlocked version from Austrailia, which so far, is compatible with AT&T. The only problem I've had is that text messages appear on the iPhone, rather than on the Droid, regardless of where the SIM card is.

This is old so you may have figured out by now, but did you make sure that iMessage is turned off on the iPhone.

XT910 Questions

Can an XT910 locked to Rogers, be unlocked? Does a Rogers XT910 have LTE?
I believe that TMobile has HSPA+ in Seattle, but is there any word what kind of LTE they will have? Surely something compatible with iPhone, as they've already lost 700,000 subscribers due to the iPhone.
Some say 'go with a dev phone or go home'. But how the hell do you find/identify a dev phone?
Does the xt910 have to be the developer edition, or will any do, including the Maxx? Is the xt910 always overseas? If not, why don't carriers have it?
..
unlockable
I have an unlocked Rogers XT910, so yes it can be unlocked.
I used cellunlocker dot net. Great service from them.
Only HSPA+ where I live, so maybe someone else can comment on LTE. I can't see why it wouldn't work though, if you have an LTE compatible micro sim.
With the Nexus One there was a utility we could use to unlock them.
Isn't there such a utility for the XT910?
Also, I thought the carrier was required to give you the unlock code on request. Isn't this still the case?
Is anyone running MIUI on this phone? If so, does it have the soft buttons across the bottom?
I'm not aware of any utility for unlocking, maybe someone else knows of one? There is one for rooting of course.
Rogers will charge $50 for unlocking last I heard, I was able to pay $8 and avoid Rogers altogether, I consider that a win
http://communityforums.rogers.com/t5/forums/forumtopicpage/board-id/Android/thread-id/6394
Never hurts to ask them though, either at a kiosk or by phone.
It appears you can bid on -any- unlock code, regardless of what it's characterized for or when it ends. All they need is the IMEI number and old carrier, and you're golden. Looks like I can get an unlock code for about 50 cents on eBay now. Ferocious competition.

How about Maxx battery upgrades? Anything less than $99?
Anyone home?
My phone will arrive in the mail today.
Can anyone advise?
I found with Ebay you may have to wait a bit longer. It really depends on the seller but I've waited up to 4 days for a response (though the description said 8-14hrs).
Cellunlocker.net sent me a code within 15 mins, it costs more. Choice is yours of course. I didn't like the long wait when I couldn't use the phone for calls.
Any XT910 should be capable of LTE if your carrier uses LTE.
I wouldn't worry about a dev phone. If you develop and are interested in working with an unlocked bootloader fine, but since so few developer phones were made, there won't be a lot of development on it. Most are using a regular phone and you'll find most options with that. Just enjoy your phone
Nothing under $99 for a battery upgrade, if there was I would buy it. You may find a wrecked phone on Ebay, but they tend to go for $200 or more.
Only place seems to have it is cellphone repair shop online. It's a great upgrade, but it's not cheap.

[Q] Buying a SPRINT Gear S with No Activation??

Is anyone having any luck buying a Sprint Gear S WITHOUT having to activate the data plan to go along with it?
Long Story Short - Trying to buy my girlfriend the Gear S for Christmas. She is with Sprint.
I know that the Gear S can be used without the data connection- Meaning I could just buy the AT&T watch and be good to go. But I want to buy the Sprint version of the watch on the off chance that she decides that she wants to activate the data plan... I'm not having ANY luck calling Spring and/or visiting Sprint Stores.
Any one had any luck?

While I can't answer your question, I just wanted to let you know that if you run into walls, and Sprint refuses to help you, you could get the ATT version, unlock it, and get her a Tmo card for 15$/month.
ATT watch and Tmo plan seem to be the best combination in terms of value, especially since she would not be tied in into any kind of contract.

Thank you so much for the suggestions! A couple follow up questions for you if you don't mind.....
1. How do I 'unlock' the ATT watch?
2. Will the unlocked ATT watch with a Tmob SIM communicate correctly with her Sprint phone??

If you have ever been an ATT customer, or know someone who is or was an ATT customer, you/they can request an unlock code for free. Turn around time is around 4 days. I walked into an ATT store and told them I wanted to buy it straight out and not activate it on ATT. No problem at all.
Otherwise, there is a UK Ebay seller who offers unlock codes for $16. I bought one not knowing if ATT would end up unlocking mine, because I only have a grandfathered data plan with them, but they did. That seller was recommended by someone here, and he said he got his unlock code in less than 24 hrs, so they seem to be legit. (Again, can't speak out of experience because ATT ended up unlocking my phone. I am sitting on an unlock code, debating if I should buy a cheap prepaid Samsung phone just so I can unlock it.) There are sites like unlocker.net that charge $39 for the same service.
All I did was put my Tmo sim card in, and the Gear S prompted me for the unlock code. Once entered, the device was open to use with whatever carrier I wanted.

Yes. Quite a few users reported successfully using their non Tmo phones with a Gear S that has a Tmo SIM in it, be it a Tmo Gear S or an unlocked ATT Gear S (Tmo won't unlock theirs). I happen to have a Tmo voice plan, but I have not read a single report where the watch was not playing nice with a different carrier on it than on the phone.
And, if I may say, that's a really cool present for your girlfriend, especially if she is active. Great choice
I kind of hate Tmo because they refused to unlock my phone, so I HATE saying anything good about them right now. But they do have the best plan AFAIK, no ties whatsoever, and specific music streaming apps don't count against the watch's 500 MB data allotment, like Milk, which i haven't used, but which comes preinstalled. The plan also includes unlimited talk&text, btw.
ETA: Check out this very long thread about buying an ATT Gear S without a contract

Can't make outgoing calls

Hey guys, I'm wondering if anyone can help me out. I can receive calls, but can't make them. I've tried both wifi and cellular.
The weird thing is I called T-mobile for help and they were saying based on the IMEI I wasn't using a T-mo version and that I should get it unlocked. But it's definitely a T-mobile phone and it was working perfectly fine until today. If it was locked to some other carrier, it wouldn't have been working all this time, right?
Thanks for any help.
Where did you get your Galaxy Note 8? Did you get it from T-Mobile?
If you got it from somewhere like Ebay, then that device maybe flashed for T-Mobile, but actually came from another carrier. Check XDA on how to fix (flash) your device's cellular radio firmware to fully work with T-Mobile (that is if the IMIE number is not locked, due to previous owner's fault, like not fully paying for the Note 8, theft, etc).
If you got this device from T-Mobile, then do a manufacture warranty exchange with T-Mobile. You can request this over a phone call to T-Mobile support. Then they will send the replacement device to a T-Mobile store near you for you to do the exchange.
Always better to get your device from a trustworthy place, like your carrier's store/website/customer support phone call.
When getting a "smartphone" device from places like Ebay, you need to ask yourself why are they doing this. Why are they getting rid of a flagship like the Galaxy Note 8 so early on? If I was going for another flagship right now I would still keep the Note 8 for its unique features. So I would be suspicious of somebody giving rid of this device (Note 8) so early on. Why are they selling it for such low price right now? These are my thoughts on someone selling Note 8 right now (at this point in time) for low price: Good likelihood they messed it up by trying to root/flash ROM/flash carrier modem radio firmware, they don't want to fully pay the device off (so the device is no use to them), or they stolen the device.
Human beings are not dishonest all the time, but it does beg these questions to be asked and answered. Be so very careful in trusting people like this. Personally I wouldn't trust someone in this situation, but that is just me. Remember that they are not doing this because they are amateurs. They are very good in winning your trust.
Just saying!

Thanks for the reply. I bought it from someone on Swappa. He sent me the receipt with it. It was purchased from Samsung.com. The box it came in had the T-mobile logo and everything so it's weird that the IMEI isn't registered with them.
To update my situation, I tried starting in safe mode and was able to make calls so I'm told it's a third party app causing the problem. Not sure which it is since I haven't installed anything new in a while.
First do a "Factory data reset". See if that gets rid of the problem. Hopefully that would get rid the the app that is causing the issue. I just remembered that substratum (including sungstratum - Samsung addon) did weird things like this to my Galaxy Note 8. I had to do a "Factory data reset". Then install all the apps one by one, since both Google and Samsung backups had substratum within it. So I couldn't use either backups. For that reason I stay away from substratum stuff.
It is not abnormal for Samsung direct bought devices to have IMIE number not registered with carrier. Usually not a problem with T-Mobile.
If problem still exists then have the seller contact Samsung to let them know that he gave the device to you. He can say it was a gift to you. Remember to tell him to give your information to Samsung. Once that is done, then you can can get support from Samsung.
Again, if you got the device from T-Mobile this problem would have been solved so much easier and quicker. Next time think about getting the device directly from the carrier.

Unlocked Galaxy S9 Question

Hello guys,
I did see 5hat the Galaxy s9 plus is cheaper through Samsung or through Best Buy Friday. The phone that is cheaper is the unlocked version that works with any carrier including Verizon which I get. My question is will the unlocked version work with, or have a way to download Verizon Visual Voicemail, and will it work? Appreciate the feedback.

To piggy back off of this question (since I am in similar boat with AT&T) - Is it possible to flash the phone with the carrier version after purchasing unlocked version? Unfortunately, WiFi calling is a must where I live.
Thanks
I'm also in the same situation with Verizon. I want to get the unlocked version, but will everything work just like the verizon branded device? Also does anyone know if the Samsung trade in offer will work with a Verizon phone that's on payment plan?
Also wondering if sideloading the app will work for this purpose.

I don't see why they shouldn't take it. I've sold phones on Verizon payment plan and haven't had any problems. The carriers only care that you continue to make payments and fire that they bill you monthly.

Yes I just finished reading the fine print in Samsung's trade in offer. So the only phones they will not accept as trade ins are leased phones.
Just went through this at Best Buy on Friday, also.
Was strongly considering the unlocked S9+ and porting it to the VZW network. I inquired with the blue-shirt if there would be any loss of functionality should I make such a choice. The answer was "no".
The Samsung representative was in attendance, so I put the question to him as well. After glazing over while he went into an analogy of how your IMEI and SIM card are like licensing a car - and how they all can drive on the same road - I directed him back to the issue at hand, and his response was "no difference".
Then I called VZW, waited for the obligatory 15 minutes on hold, and asked the representative the same question. The answer was "No. None. Exactly the same."
Did a few searches on the feature I was specifically concerned about - that being Wi-Fi calling - and it appeared, from an historical perspective, there would be the potential for that functionality to be absent unless one purchased the branded device.
The VZW store was across the street, so I brought my question to them. In an experience that is as unique as it was surprising, I was lucky enough to get a salesperson who genuinely seemed to want to know the definitive answer as much as I did. He researched his on-line documentation for a few minutes before calling what he claimed to be their "network engineer".
The answer came back that VoLTE would work but Wi-Fi calling would not, on an unlocked S9+ ROM in the VZW network.
I've subsequently read contradicting indications but, considering the self-assigned importance of that capability, I decided not to chance it and find out the hard way that it would not work - should that be the case.
While this does not address your Visual Voice Mail concern, it does demonstrate exactly how many differing answers one can get from supposedly knowledgeable resources.
So, my solution was to lease the branded device with the understanding that I will need to deal with all of the pre-loaded stuff that I (or for that matter, just about anyone) do not need, want or use.
I have seen this questions asked hundreds of times, and I have seen both answers regarding WiFi calling. I know I have purchased unlocked phones right from Google in the past and never had an issue with any feature on VZW. I guess I will find out soon if anything has changed, as I ordered the 9+ unlocked from Samsung (they offered $100 more in a trade and a cheaper base price = no brainer). Will the confusion ever end?
Having had a unlocked s8+ and a Note 8 with VZ I can say VVM does not work. I've tried various applications and am not a fan of using google voice so I reached out and had standard messaging applied to my account and basic VVM removed. I'll get a notification but have to call in to check my voicemail which is no biggie. Never tried wifi calling but HD Voice does work ok. I preordered an unlocked S9+ so I'm sure it'll be the same boat
Verizon had the demo for the s9 plus in their store today, and the model of the phone is IDENTICAL to the unlocked US model. Also kinda wishing I'd stuck to the purple one I'd ordered by accident and cancelled, as it looks amazing in person.

With the S7, you could flash the any of the carrier or unlocked firmware on the phone. This would give you access to verizon VVM, WiFI calling, etc if you flashed that firmware. I heard the S8 was the same since the hardware in them are the same between carriers. Here's to hoping that the S9 is the same.

If you want WiFi Calling on Att - you MUST buy an ATT phone. ATT WiFi calling will only work with Branded ATT Phones - NOT unlocked ones. Sorry.

This is true. If you want wifi calling (which I do), you need an AT&T phone. You can't flash anything on the phone to make it work. A few extra AT&T apps is not a big deal on a phone like this to get the features they provide. If you pay for their service you should get all the benefits but that's not how it is for now.

And that is very unfortunate. I am hoping that one day they will open up WiFi Calling to non carrier phones - but I doubt it will happen any time soon if at all.
Is it the same for tmobile?
Just got off the phone with a Tier 2 Tech Coach with VZW and they said that they can only "guarantee the VZW branded phones will work with their features." I specifically asked about VVM and WiFi calling. They suggested I stick to the VZW branded model. I explained that their model was virtually $100 more than the unlocked version from Samsung and I wasn't sure why that was on "basically the same phone." She was kind and courteous, but certainly it's another way for Big Red to make more money.

GS8 Unlocked worked with both VoLTE and Wifi Calling on TMO so there is no reason for the GS9+ unlocked not to support these features.

Problem with VZW is support for integrated video calling thru the phone app which is different from the Samsung default. On VZW the unlocked USA version will support VoLTE but not WIfi Calling, VVM, Video Calling.
my 2 cents.

They're wrong. I tested a Verizon model in stores, and it's literally the exact same model number as the unlocked one I've got on order from Samsung. But of course they want you to buy the Verizon one, the mark up in the price is pure profit for them, and they probably get a commission for selling it to you.

Don't forget their useless $30+ "activation fee" they charge when you buy a device through them. I shouldn't have to pay $30 to take the SIM out of my old phone and put it in my new phone. I'm going with the unlocked version because I'm considering switching to T-Mobile due to all this type of crap Verizon pulls.

So I'm curious what happens if you have a leased phone. Do they just not accept it and then charge your card for what you weren't charged at time of checkout?

Question on the unlocked Bestbuy s9+/Microsoft Store s9+

Are any of these versions free of carrier branding or bloatware ? I remember a while back purchasing a unlocked samsung phone at bestbuy and they sold me a verizon version stating it was the unlocked version.
Wondering if the bestbuy version or microsoft store version both of which are suppose to be unlocked variants have any carrier branding or bloatware.
As always thank you in advance.
I bought my unlocked one from Bestbuy and I can confirm there is no carrier apps on it whatsoever so you should be okay!!
thank you!
I just got one of these from Best Buy as well. There are some things that I am finding that are missing from the unlocked versus the carrier branded version such as no support for AT&T wifi calling, HD Voice, & Visual voicemail. The only thing I would like to get is native support for visual voicemail and I did find a workaround by side loading the AT&T Visual Voicemail APK since the official version from the play store says it is not compatible with my phone.
I think Samsung has a visual voice mail app included with the phone. I also believe att uses this app but they require the phone be provisioned with them. Basically on their system they need the imei and they make it a smartphone plan, unlike an iphone where they make it an iphone provision for facetime etc. Worth a shot to give them a call. I had to do this when switching from my iphone to my old N8. I wonder if enhanced msging works the same.

I would hope, but I've already talked with with AT&T Tech support regarding this. Currently this option is not available on factory unlocked S9/S9+ but is being looked into for a possible future firmware update. Not sure exactly when this will happen but they say it's up to Samsung to update. So how long it will be or even if it will be done is anybody's guess. Perhaps there might be a way to load the Carrier (SM-G965U) firmware to the unlocked (SM-G965U1) model. I've seen it's possible to go the other way but I'm not of the reverse.
