[Q] 3rd party headset support - Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo, Pro

I did a search but to no avail... please don't blame me if the topic already exists
I bought a Urbanears headphone which had a headset device (mic and button) included but Neo would not support the 3-channel 3.5 plug ('Accessory not support' message jumps out) and I had to plug a stereo adapter (2-channel 3.5 plug) to make the headphone work, but only for music.
I am wondering if the 'not support' issue is a hardware problem or a software problem? I thought it was unlikely for the former because the 3.5mm format should be just the same for all headset (Urbanears claims it is compatible with most device except those with restrictions, say, SE ), so I guess it was SE putting some software restriction on headsets other than its own brand. So if this assumption is true is there a way for a rooted device to overcome this restriction and use the mic and control on the headset (headphone) ?
Thanks a lot

Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung phones before Galaxy S all have the same 3.5mm jack configuration.
Apple, HTC, all Samsung phones that came after Galaxy S have another configuration.
So NO Apple, HTC etc compatible headsets will not work with a Sony Ericsson (and vice versa)
You could use an adapter, it will make both the audio and the mic and answer button work, but having an adapter doesn't look very good.
All these 3.5mm headsets have 4 poles instead of 3 as normal headphones without mic's, but the thing is that they are wired differently.

Apple etc are wired like this:
1-Left Audio
2-Right Audio
3-Ground
4-Mic
SE, Nokia etc are wired like this:
1-Audio Left
2-Audio Right
3-Mic
4 -Ground
As you can see, number 3 and 4 need to change place in order to get the headset working fully with your phone. If you are good at soldering you could maybe modify it, otherwise I'd suggest you either get other headphones or use an ugly adapter. I have an adapter that changes the wiring of number 3 and 4, so they do exist.

I just got Klipsch Image S4A headphones for Android
They do not work with SonyEricsson Xperia Neo.
I get "Accessory not supported" message.

Thanks K4L very much, I know where to get an adapter but I just hope there would be an easier way around:/ now I have to get an ugly adapter though I love my Urbanrars so much thank you again for the detailed explanation

it is possible to use any headphone, because at the board there is what they called switching transistor, but for more functionality use active headphones...

Well... if they don't have a mic or controls, it should work perfectly yes. ANY 3.5mm earphones/headphones without a mic or controls will work.
Howeveeeeeeer... if they're called "iBeats" it sounds like it's a headset for iPhones. Make sure you buy the Beats without mic/controls.

skullcandy ink'd mic'd doesn't work
How I wish I had come across this thread before buying the skullcandy Mic'd headset. It is not working on my neo and I get accessory not supported message. I have been looking all night and was not able to find a suitable adapter. Can anyone here provide a link or suggest where I can get one? so that I don't end up buying the wrong one

Sony changed from Sony Ericsson to just Sony (they also changed the headset to work just like htc and galaxy s line)
So urbeats , htc beats solo and sony smart headset should work on the 3 brands

Hello all,
Thought i will just add on to this post. My friend has a SE Neo V on android 2.3.4 stock and had this same issue with a 3rd party earphones (believe it was Creative and TDK).
We tried downloading this app/widget toggleheadset2 from google play and it helped with playback of sound to the 3rd party earphones. Sound quality is acceptable.
However for the FM radio it is a bit harder as it needs to detect earphones plugged in before starting but not impossible to get working
1. Make sure toggleheadset2 widget is on
2. in the home screen , plug in your headset and immediately press and hold on the volume up/down button. the accessory not supported button will pop up on screen. click ok and then let go of the volume button.
3. FM Radio apps should work then, if it fails you will need to repeat the process again.
Well this is what we found out and got our neo v to work with a 3rd party headset. Hopefully this will help someone else.

I tried urbeats ( not ibeats which is iPhone version )
On htc phones
Samsung galaxy tab and s 2
Nokia lumia
All three buttons work on them
Htc Nokia lumia samsung galaxy
And Sony headset (not Sony Ericsson) all have same type of 3.5 jack
A lot of manufacturers seem to have move to one standard 3.5 jack

I've got a Tiger with mic earphones and it works with toggleheadset2 but the sound is no good until I press the mic button. Afaik, it's an opensource app.
Is there any way to set the app properly in order to get the earphones work correctly?

I have the same problem with a set of Dr Dre Beats Solo HD's. I installed the toggleheadset2 app/widget and when the mic button is pressed (and kept pressed) the sound is perfect but you have to keep the button physically pressed down in order to have decent sound quality and that's not viable.
Any chance of a link to an appropriate adapter??
Cheers,
Ben

While searching i also found this on ebay, but it's larger and more expensive: http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-5mm-TRRS-...499?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e6f3e9ddb
I've been waiting a couple of days for a reply from these guys(lunashops) to a question i asked them. Until they actually get back to me i thought it best to move the link further down. I'm about to order this one myself http://www.lunashops.co.uk/goods-1073.html . Got that link from a post on Headfi by ClieOS

TyTN x Sony Crossover!. Solution to the lack of audio port!

Just a bit of whining here...
The TyTN seems fine after a month of use but the headset issue is blowing my mind. I want to listen to the music and talk on the phone with some quality headsets.
First the supplied headset is a non standard USB, you cannot use your own headphones or connect to speaker inputs. Bluetooth stereo headsets are available but I believe that they are still too bulky and the technology is not yet fully developed.
You can't charge the phone while using the headset. This is just dumb, Very dumb.
Needless to say the quality of the supplied headset is not good, it is not even recognized by the phone as headset when you connect it. If you connect it to your phone while the phone is non silent, the phone still rings and not just your headset.
I have no idea why HTC is doing this, the TyTN is a relatively large device and it doesnt make sense that there are no spaces for a 2.5mm plug where you can buy all kidns of aftermarket wired headsets for it. Even the high end headset makers SHURE make headsets with the 2.5mm...
Finally I've made a move. TyTN X Sony Crossover Custom Headphones.
I've used a solder to remove the original earbuds wire and soldered a pair of cut SONY MDR-EX71SL headphones on. They sound 100 times better than the stock ones. This will ease my frustrations for now. I was tempted to solder my MDR-EX90LP on but they are $100 a pair. Too much for now
Later on I will try to rework the stock mini USB headphone and make a 2.5mm connector for it so I can use all kinds of headphones(with mic) and connect to a speaker system as I want!
EDIT: It appears that the original mini USB headset has 6 wires, 4 should be for the headphones and the remaining 2 for the mic, I can simply cut up the wire right after the mini USB port and connect the 6 wires to a standard cell phone headset 2.5mm connector then I should be able to connect the TyTN to all kinds of headsets![/img]
Arent you essentially doin this? http://www.4winmobile.com/tutorial-replace-hermes-headset-connector-with-35mm-socket-vt3146.html as seen in another post, seems like the most universal way to solve the problem.
I do like the way you built a set without a plug, cleaner..less cord and weight, but I know myself, I go through a pair of headphones about every 2 months on my mp3 player, Id hate to have to redo the soldering everytime, I expect with the headphones being such an issue for most peple that the market will be flodded in a month or so with headphones for the tytn, or atleast adapters, shoot, the one guy in the above url even offered to do it for free, as long as you bought the plug.
is there still no adaptor available to buy?
i just do this way........

@crash74
Looks very good, even more solid than the other solution, but how do you open the unit to reach the print, is their any trick?!
Can i also use the new connection as a line-out for little active stereo boxes, or is this to tricky for TyTn/boxes?
worked like a dream i have no more crapy hissing inbetween tracks and now i can play my song thu my hi-fi that 1 to the modders and 0 to htc
Adapter usb to 3.5 jack
Go to semsons.com, they have the adapter
qing84, I have the same headphones as u=) firstly I solve this problem like you, but I smash the small "black box"=) with mic and volume control, and i was need connect my mdr-ex71 directly to TyTN without "black box"=(
I was glad that i did it, because sound became much more louder, and more clean...

I want to buy it to be able to listen to music in the car while navigating and charging. Here are the tech details from the expansys website:
Technical Details
• HTC ExtUSB standard headset connector
• Mini USB power connector
• 3.5mm audio connector (with in-line mic support)
• 2.5mm audio connector (with in-line mic support)
• Power status light
Sounds great and everything, but what's bothering me is this:

Since the connector is some extended one, will a standard 3.5 (say, standard headphones) fit well in it? I doubt it but wanted to ask anyway to be sure
Have you actually heard of a 3.5mm audio connector with a mic?
3,5 mm with mic in
Sure there is a 3,5 conneciton with mic.
I have a headset with 3,5 to my htc 7500.

I bought this one:
and I can confirm that it will charge, you can listen to the music coming from the TC (using the AUX from a car radio or plug a headset in the 3,5) and Tomtom navigation. Yours appears to me more sophisticated, since it has a 2 connectors with Mic input (wonder if the TC can handle that) and a power status light.

That one is stereo output only. It does not include mic input.
I think both are similar, just the HTC one costs $20 while the one ---Alex--- got can be found for $4 in some stores. Do you really need 2.5 mic?
The HTC one is having some troubles, cuz when I asked HTC about it they said they haven't even tested it themselves. I guess only UK has made a few samples which is why the expansys expected date keeps 'slipping' and is always about 3-4wks away...
So, both multifunction cables support 3.5mm input with mic, while all others (incl. the single miniUSB-to-3.5mm) do not support a full headset with mic, right?
Getting either multifunction cable should be fine for a 3.5mm headset?
Yeah, well, after all I ordered this one:

I received mine in less than 10 days, The Netherlands. However, it depends on customs as well. Once a large parcel was in the custom area for more than 2 weeks.
how is the audio quality from this cable? Will the audio coming from the car be in full stero with bass?
I bought one of the Car cradles for the HTC Touch, which has a mic jack on it. When i hooked it into my cars stero it sounded horrible... was mono sound i think and no bass at all.

It is full stereo. I adjust bass using the car radio controls, mine works excellent.
I was cheap, and also angered at HTC for not including a miniUSB -> 3.5/2.5mm adapter with the purchase of the device, so what I did was I modified the crap quality headphones that came with it, cut off the buds, and soldered the wires to a normal 3.5 mm cable so i could listen to it in my car.
The only trouble is that I can't charge and listen at the same time, So I guess I'll have to get one of these adapters.
I was even more pissed when I purchased a motorola miniUSB -> 2.5mm stereo and found it incompatible with HTC's miniUSB pinout. Guess I should have researched that before I bought it, oh well. Another thing that blows is that all the local stores only carry the motorola adapter, and not the HTC one. Figures.
II hate ordering things tho, cause they take so long to get here.. so I just said F it and cut/soldered so I could listen in my car with the AUX input in my dashboard until the one I just ordered comes .
BTW, I wasn't impressed with the design of the HTC or PDAir one, so I checked on google and ultimately came upon this one:
I just ordered it from http://www.semsons.com/2miusband3st.html
Hopefully it will come in a few days. Will update post with review of it once I receive it .

All HTC devices have the same mini USB pinout (AFAIK -- I'm 99.9% sure of thise).
It has a bunch of HTC devices listed on the page, so I figure it will in fact work with the TC.
Also, the fact that the page says "Not compatible with Motorola Phones" is also indicitave that it will work for ALL HTC products.
I know this becuase I bought the motorola one at RadioShack and it did not work with the TC.
I researched it and found that the Motorola miniUSB pinout is in fact a little different than HTC's.
I will report back as soon as I get it.
The total price was somewhere around $8 and I'm scheduled to get it sometime next week before friday.
I like the design of that one because there is no cord; it just snaps right into the usb slot and doesn't "dangle" from the device.
Also, to answer your question about the audio quality...
My home made one works 100% perfectly in my car.
The quality is amazing. I have a 6 speaker Bose system in my car too
So if the quality was bad, I would definately be able to tell.
thanks for the info, it was very helpful.
I think the sound was crop in the car-holder i had because it had its own audio-out jack. I think I will order this as well, its worth a try for $8.
Wow, I ordered this on Saturday and it came on tuesday!...and I selected the 4-6 day shipping which was $2.50!...This is a great company, semsons & co, and the adapter is top notch...it snaps \ locks into place perfectly, and now i can charge and listen at the same time!
Go semsons & co!
Almost forgot, confirmed this work son the touch cruise, and also my old 6700..so it's like I said, i'm still pretty much positive that all HTC phones have the same mini-usb pinout.
A little off topic...but I was thinking about this today
My car has a bluetooth handsfree system, but obviously it only works for calls.
Does anyone know of a car radio \ system that has A2DP also?
...If so, that basically eliminates any need for a cable or adapter, besides the charger itself, unless you want to drain the battery .
I've searched and have come up with a couple different ones...but I'm unsure if any of them are good or not.

Hi!
Today I will get delivered my new car, luckily it is without an original stereo. I bought a Sony MEX-BT2600 (~130€ in Austria) which includes BT Handsfree (built in Mic) and capable of receiving BT Audio Streaming.
I will post the next days if it works (I'm still not sure if that Sony and the TC can connect and use the BT protocol in the correct way ....)

Proprietary headphone socket

SE seems to like those proprietary headphone sockets anyone know of a converter so we can use HTC/iPhone style headphones with mic?
My trusty skullcandy headset lies suddenly idle, and the SE headset is not the best headset i've tried.
the xperia mini have 3.5 audio jack, iPhone headset microphone might not work but you can listen to music on it still.
now the older lower ends se phones have the proprietary that your talking about with 3.5 jack on the other end.
correct me if I'm missing the point
The sk17 will only accept se style mic headsets, normal sound only headsets works fine. There are tons of nice headsets with mic that works in htc, samsung and iphone alike, so it's sad that se once again went with their own connection type
Sent from my GT-P1000 using Tapatalk
oooohhh ic i never notice this bc i never use wired ones anymore just the stereo bluetooth ones. the ones that comes with the box never fits in the ear. i can only use the in ear buds.
but if you really appreciate music and sound the blue tooth still isn't better than hardwires no matter how much they cost it's just not possible.
nice heads up
i dont like those earbuds there horrible, i tried my iphone earphones (the ones with the volume keys and answer button) and it cam up with an error, i cant remember exactly what the error was. then the sound only comes out the speaker
hopefully someone might make a mod or hack that lets us use other earphones
luckily in india they bundle SE mini pro with a good inear ear phones .
try other normal 3.5 mm head set it should work fine , because AFAIK its iphone who have special jack , and not sony thats why the iphone one's dont work well.
iPhone has special plug yeah, but HTC and Samsung uses the same plug, so my Skullcandy FMJ's work flawlessly in my Galaxy tab, but not in my Mini pro (which is a lot easier to have in the pocket)
I believe alle we need is a small converter as i read somewhere (engadget i think) that Sony would be coming with a set of headphones for iphone/htc/samsung, that would work with the Xperia line through a converter cable bundled in the package.
So hopefully we'll find these on ebay soon!
Buy Koss and never look back

Don't think it'll solve the problem of not having a mic on the cable.
Untill something with a mic comes out, i'll just stick with my Sony MDR-NC60.
Try the MW600 - the sounds is very close to wired. Unless I am in a silent room I can't tell the difference between my MW600 on direct wired connection on my U20i.
I saw those a few days ago, and i've been considering them, but i''ll love to avoid another powersucker connected to my phone..
Anyone by any chance have the MH700 lying around and able to test them? They list the Arc and Ray as compatible phones, so should work with the Mini Pro, but would love a confirmation before i spend ~40$ on them.
http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/products/accessories/overview/mh700?cc=gb&lc=en#view=overview
They also list the x10 Mini Pro as compatible... if you still have the headset from your old Mini Pro, see if it will work with the new one. If it does, then the MH700 should work, too. Keep us posted, I'm curious about this as well.
dave
Thats a good idea, i'll see if i can dig em up, but i think my brother has em, and he's not really close by... but i think i got a work mate with the x10 mini aswell. I'll report bag as soon as i've testet.
edit: Just remembered the x10min got a special jack for the remote part, and wont fit in a normal 3.5mm jack
I don't remember what the extra jack on the x10 minipro was for, but the included headset didn't require it.
I can confirm that the headset from my old minipro also works with the new minipro and the remote button is fully functional... so, the MH700 headset *should* work, also.

I got a MW600, but I find that it is not fully compatible with my xperia mini pro (SK17), indeed, before I had a c905 and there was information on the MW600 screen (like the hour when no music and the title of the music when playing). On my fast test on my xperia mini pro(SK17) those informations were not onscreen.
I feel your paid, My Apple headphones wouldn't work properly. Hell, SE's stock headset doesn't work with iPod/iPhone either.
A way to use those headsets/headphones is to plug it in incorrectly, like not all the way in, mess with it and you will eventually get clear sound but this is only for output sound, not for mic.
What I have also noticed is that if I press and hold the talk button or the center button, the sound goes through but who the hell wants to hold a button in order to listen to music? No one of course. If you plug it in all the way, chances are you will get a "incompatible assesory" error, either that or you will get really bad, low depth sound without holding the button.
It's basically SE's way of being like Apple, with Apples USB charging cable, etc.
Either way, the SE Xperia Mini Pro SK17a's stock headphones (whatever the model number is, does anyone still have it?) is good enough for me though.
Probably not for anyone else in the world
btw i need a few posts before posting in dev forum,
got a xperia mini pro,
i modded hpm-77 to 3.5 mm jack
not joke
just the wiring needed to be connected, everything works as the stock earphones
in the next post i attach a pic
not the nicest but it works
Nice work!
I recently found out it's the wiring that's just wonky on iphone/ipod, but because they have such a big marketshare almost every major headphone maker, makes their headsets iphone/ipod compatible.
I found this adaptor http://www.amazon.co.uk/FiiO-adapte...MQ1Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1322052355&sr=8-1 that should make using iphone/ipod compatible headphones work on the Xperia line (and a couple of others), it has been dispatched from amazon today, so should have it end of this week or early next week. I'll report back about functionality.
Just received the adapter, and it works flawlessly!
My SkullCandy iphone headset now works with my Xperia Mini Pro, and damn what an improvement over the stock headset!

Xperia Mini best hadsfree for music?

Hi, guys!
I'm new in the Mini section. I've been using X10 Mini for almost an year, but now I'm with a Xperia Mini 2011.
In the past I was using MH810 handsfree and it was having a pretty nice sound, sound remote control on the wire, but it is incompatible with the Mini.
So which handsfree with sound remote control is compatible with the Mini? Only SE Live Sound or there are others?
Thanks in advance for the info!
The 2011 xperia line uses a diferent type of protocol for the 3,5mm connector that's why other headsets are incompatible. I think that your only choices are the models released by Sony Ericsson i.e. Livesound.
Sent from my mango using xda premium
I currently have Sony MW600, Hi-Fi Wireless Headset, works via Bluetooth, quality is good enough, costs also less than LiveSound, also has remote control buttons Play/Pause, Next/Previous and volume.
But what you mean, that is incompatible with Mini? Just give it a try, according to me, you have nothing to lose...
The 3.5 mm jacks of the X10 Mini and the Xperia Mini are different - that's why they're incompatible and the wonderful MH810 handsfree cannot work on the Xperia Mini.
What about putting a 3.5 mm jack on to a HPM 82 handsfree instead of the fast-connector - will it work?
I'm asking because MH1 Livesound is not being sold in Bulgaria, so I should order it from amazon.uk maybe.
What do you mean, that does not work? No sound or controls don't work or what?
Take a look in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1229622
summary: buy the gadget linked there and get any iphone compatible headset you want.
Someguyfromhell, I mean the jacks are DIFFERENT!!! Why don't you look at them in Google? Why should you ask that questions, as I have already explained that twice?!

It's not directly the phone, that has different jack. Both have 3.5mm jacks, it doesn't make any difference at all.
The headset has additional part, which is...I have no idea, what for. Probably additional functions from the remote control.
One way would be to try getting rid of this additional chip thing, if you are willing to take that risk.

Why do u continue with that stupid... suggestions?! Getting rid of the additional contact-strips will make the remote control of the handsfree completely useless and I will not be able to recieve calls, or sell the handsfree to some X10 Mini owner.
Even Nokia headsets work with Xperia mini, i was shocked to see old nokia headset to be working with my st15i, button, microphone, everything.
If you want really good sound - buy big , normal headphones.

I've tried Nokia headphones a few days ago, they did have remote control for the music player on the wire, but... they didn't worked with the mini. Or at least the remote control didn't. There was sound, but no control over it. Maybe because they were a cheap Chinese copy.
I found my old X1 lead, it has a socket on the mic for use with any headphones
Also old SE HPM-80 in ear headphones are good
Sent from my Xperia Mini using Tapatalk
Yep, they're like HPM 82 with display on the remote control, but with a fastport again. I'll try to solder a 3.5mm jack to a HPM 82 handsfree (to replace the fastport), but I may not succeed because there are 8 or 9 cables out of the wire and only 4 holes to solder them on the 3.5mm jack...
using easy sennheiser headphones, awesome for less money
I've got second hand Sony Ericsson MH1 for half price. Not so special, good sound, not better than the old HPM-82 or MH810 for example. And the lack of a clip for hanging on the neck piece is obviously a disadvantage! The free is constantly slipping down and pulling the ears - very annoying!
The lack of separate buttons for changing the music tracks is also a disadvantage - music tracks are changed with continuous pressing the volume buttons of the handsfree's remote control, not with separate buttons like on the HPM-82 or MH810. But it seems that this is due to the 3.5mm jack cable-number connectivity limitation. The MH810 has some additional ports on the side of the 3.5mm jack, which allow it to have more buttons on the remote control, while MH1 doesn't have them on the jack.
guys i've been looking for budget headphones that would fit in xperia mini's jack
i don't know if it would help but i tried couple of nokia headphones that worked with the device along with the samsung corby pro's stock stock headphones and they all worked currently im considering buying
MEElectronics M9-SL
or the
iLuv iEP322BLK citylights
but i don't know if any of those is compatible with the xperia mini anyway so advice would be appreciated
Note:I just want music to my ears
Xperia Mini has regular 3.5 mm jack, so you can use any headphones(with 3.5mm jack) with the phone.

actually i'm now considering one of the following but don't know if they would work or not
1-MEElectronics M9
2-JVC Xtreme Xplosives FX1X
3-Koss KSC 75
4-SkullCandy Titan
5-iLuv iep322
i only found the iep322 and the titan in local stores however the titan is a bit expensive would be my last choice just before the iep322

Xperia Ray Compatible Headset

Is anybody using a headset other than Sony Ericsson/ Sony? If yes, do you have any problems?
I'm looking for a new pair and I'd like to have the microphone and remote controls (either one, two or three buttons; configureable with the Jay's or Nocs Headset App from the play store) working.
So far I used the standard headset that came with the phone and had the earphones changed but unfortunately it broke. So I was thinking about either getting this (very cheap) one from htc and change the earphones one more time or maybe some proper ones like Sennheisers, Jay's, Nocs or whatever.
Does it matter if they are actually "made for the iPhone"?
I just shipped a pair of SE LiveSound back as the LiveKey didn't work; simply, it wasn't recognized by the SE App (old and new) at all. Other keys worked but the Headset wasn't really satisfying in general as the phones fell out easily (e.g. while running or even just walking).
Thanks for your help.

The HTC headphone is not In Ear/ noise isolating, so all the external noise will enter your ear while listening to music.
I am using LiveSound headset, and the live key WORKS. you have to use Sony Smart Connect app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sonyericsson.extras.liveware&feature=search_result
But to be frank, after using the live key for some while, i found out you really don't really need the extra key, because you can only launch apps by pressing it, but you cannot change tracks while playing a song, or other in app function.
No iPhone headsets are going to work with Ray as the headset connector configuration is different. You need an extra connector. Some headphones offer that, some doesn't. My friend bought a Philips SHH 7810, which was by default compatible with iPhone but also came with a connector for Xperia 2011 and Nokia phones.
And well, your phone fell out while walking? How is that possible?
read this: http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/31455
"There are two major standards out there for headsets, OMTP and CTIA. Sony Ericsson phones follow the OMTP standard along with other manufacturers, while other follows the CTIA standard.
The difference of these two standards is the wiring to the 3,5mm plug. Therefore if you connect a CTIA headset to a Sony Ericsson phone you might get reduced functionality or it might not work at all. (Depending on accessory and phone model)
When it comes to headphones (no mic) there is only one standard out there, so any 3,5mm headphones works with your Sony Ericsson phone."

I guess you mean a pair of headphones. I have an old pair of Creative's EP-630 lying around and they work just normally when plugged in. Right now I use these when running, however I really do miss a headset with a remote to be able to switch between the tracks without pulling out the phone. (I use this to store the phone, keys, etc. so it won't bounce around and I can fully recommend it to everybody up to jogging or running. )

I also thought about using a bloetooth device, yet I need it simply "plug 'n play" without many cords and additional gizmos to carry around or settings on the phone to turn on. Using a headset means for me: Plug it in, plug the phones into your ears and you're fine. I'm also not sure how much it would affect the battery life.

You probably didn't get me right. I had an old pair of in-ear headphones which are quite OK with a broken cable. Luckily I didn't threw them away and had the idea to cut away the phones from the original headset that came with the ray. I cut the (old) in-ears from their cable as well, opened and soldered them to the sony headset cable and thus created my very own version of a headset. However after last summer, the headset button stopped responding properly. (I guess because the remote unit got wet while running)
I used the latest two versions of Smart Connect as well as two old LiveWare Manager apps and it didn't work. At the same time I also tried out different ROMs (PACMAN, FREEXPERIA and SuperleggeraV3) and put a lot of time into trying out all the combinations. The remote worked every time without problems, only the Livekey wasn't configurable. As I ordered it over eBay, there might also be the possibility that they were simply fake as not a single time they were recognized as the LiveSound headset. (I saw on some screenshots that they are actually recognized as such when working properly)
Changing tracks in fact is possible, you can configure the keys to change tracks by holding the Volume UP/ DOWN button. You might try Jay's app or something similar to configure the buttons.
I actually did fancy the Livekey button so I could use it with Google Now as I expect google to develop it further and probably overtake Apple's Siri in its possibilities.
Ultimately, I didn't like the remote buttons (they are built inside in a different way than the Livekey button) and especially the tanglefree cords. The are really hard to tangle, however they are therefore stiffer and since the remote is on one of the ears' cable, the in-ear fell out easily when doing something with the remote. In general they were more eager to slip out with a tange free cable than with a thin one. It also bothered me that they were much more visible due to the flat cable but this is just my pesonal opinion about the look...

best thing to do is buy an Adapter for sony Ericsson.
all Sony Ericsson phones until 2011 are not compatible with standard headsets.. Sony Smartphones are compatible with Standard Headsets. and it's rare to find a headsets that are compatible with SE. so, buying a cheap Adapter is the best thing to do. ^_^
is Sony MDR-XB500 compatible?
I'm using the bluetooth jabra halo2 headset :
http://www.jabra.com/Products/Bluetooth/JABRA_HALO2/Jabra_HALO2
it has also a micro and some volume controls.
You can also use it with a wire, this is a little adapter cable included for SE phones ...
i use beats solo hd and there is no sound..
i think beats is not compatible with our ray..
