Which Skype version works via wifi with the Razr? - Motorola Droid RAZR

Hi,
I downloaded the non Verizon version of Skype and it doesn't let me use wifi at all. Is there a version of Skype that works with wifi on the Razr? Do I have to download the poorly rated Skype Mobile for Verizon to use wifi? Is it true that you can't uninstall the Verizon version of Skype?
Thanks for the help,
GP

Skype for Android works fine over Wifi for me. Avoid the Verizon version. It is my understanding that it makes Skype calls using the Verizon voice network and will therefore use your minutes. Skype for Verizon usually comes pre-installed on the system partition making it impossible to uninstall on non-rooted phones.

Any mention of video chat? On a sim free UK Razr here and skype from the market place doesn't doesn't have working video chat. It comes up with a message saying that its running on a non-certified device but that it should still work, and gives me the option to enable video calling.. but nada..

..anyone??

Hey there. Since the Razr just came out, give Skype time to update their Android app to work with it. Shouldn't be more than a couple weeks, but I'm almost positive that they will release an update soon.

I hope so.. only worry is that i'd read somewhere that video calling was borked on the Bionic and still hasn't been fixed..

Skype video calling is working with my Razr. I'm using the regular Skype version in the market. I did not download the Verizon version.

[Q] Google Voice on 2.1

Posting this to see if anyone else has this, and if any one knows how to make it work.
I use Google Voice for my international calls, but after the upgrade the dialer takes over, Google voice can not be used to "only make international calls"
i have to use "ask for every call" which is not the best solution.
[EDIT] that option does not work either
I'm having the exact same problem.
I even made several international phone calls, thinking that maybe Google Voice was running in the background... now I'll get hit with the charges for international calls from AT&T :s
Any solution to this problem?
I'm using the X10i 2.1 Global firmware on a X10a (AT&T)
hope this helps
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=9000
Looks like as sony do not use default dialer it is going to be a problem

unfortunately the suggested process does not work
I found a way to make calls by google voice. I went to the browser, went to the google voice website, and from there, I placed the call. Then I received the phone call from my google number, and it connected me to the number I was calling.
It's more troublesome than just using the app, but it is a workaround.
Any other ideas or solutions?

When you do that, aren't you still using the GSM network and your sim card to have the call connected?
I am having identical problems (2.1 Nordic) and trying to use google voice over WiFi to avoid using network minutes but Sony's dialer takes over... hopefully sony or GV will update and fix this real soon... very frustrating

I use Google Voice for international calls... so I'm still using my GSM minutes, but just as a local call, not with international rates.
Have same problem. Cost me one expensive international phone call.
Generic FW, Build 2.0.A.0504 - X10i/ATT USA
GV screen comes up, then native dialer takes over. Have used workaround posted above, but naturally would just like to be able to use it as intended.
Just a heads up to anyone who has updated to 2.1.
I have the Rogers 2.1 and using AT&T as the carrier. GV does not work for ANY of my outgoing phone calls even when I specify to use GV only.
If the issue is SE's dialer, is there a way to revert back to the generic dialer?
Thanks
I'm also having this issue, only after recently upgrading my X10 to the generic 2.1 software. I wonder if anyone has found a solution yet?
I've had this problem since day 1, since I'm from Canada and use my GV to call my american / long distance friends. I have had to use the website workaround since day one, and it really bugs me. When I was working from the iPhone app, it worked properly (call me, then call the number I'm trying to call). Since switching to my X10a, I can't have it just call me, it uses the dialer directly.
So, I use up about 100-200k of my data plan to make the call. Not a big deal, just kind of annoying.

Skype "Can't sign in" message.

Anybody having troubles lately with Skype on your Android phones?. I just can't sign in. I've read articles and it seems that many people had this issue. I have a Droid 2 Global that is not on the Verizon wireless network.
By the way, I realized that Skype for Android is only for wifi and not for 3G???? Well after seeing this problem I found a hacked version of Skype at http://www.droid-life.com/2010/10/06...calls-over-3g/ and installed it on my phone. Supposedly with this version you can make VOIP calls over 3G. Again, I still have the same problem of not being able to log in to Skype, even from this version over 3G.
After having these problems, I installed Fring and Nimbuzz, but both of them took out Skype from their services, so there is no way to use Skype anymore.
What is this? Some sort of conspiracy from Google against Skype? Maybe Google is just about to launch a Google Voice program that does VOIP and decided to start a dirty war?
Or, is this just happening on Verizon phones running Android and there is a Verizon-Skype agreement to just allow Skype Mobile to run? On the description of the app it says that "Some handsets may not be supported"... Maybe the D2G is not supported?
I have a unlocked version of Skype which will allow VOIP over 2g/3g, although i've tested it with 2g and there is a delay in voice but it works. I was having the same problem before. Just do a few searches.
D2G
Edit: I should have read your whole post try clearing defaults then force stop and try again.
Thank you

[Q] Anyone using Skype on Bell Atrix? need help!

I am using the Bell Atrix with Stock ROM without root
When I am using skype, the opposite cannot hear me clear at all
and when I call echo123, i can hear my recording is like really windy
is there anyone having the same issue? or just me......
i doubt it is a hardware issue or not, since when i google i can find nothing...
PS: I tried use wired headset and BT headset, none works!
skype doesnt work on the atrix. theres currently no fix.
I have heard that Skype works on the new Telstra SBF, but not on the stock Bell or AT&T.
No idea when updates will be coming from Bell or AT&T to fix the problem. Apparently it is a problem with the implementation of the AudioRecord API, but we can't be sure exactly HOW the Telstra SBF has fixed the problem. They might have fixed the API, or perhaps the Android Market is just deploying a new version of Skype to users with the Telstra SBF. There is very little information about this yet.
Also no word yet from the beta testers of the new AT&T update if Skype has been fixed

I can confirm Telstra SBF (which works on the Bell Atrix) works with Skype and the quality is CRYSTAL clear using mobile data. Part of that being that the SBF is HSUPA unlocked, which is different from the Stock Bell and ATT sbfs.
This means that upload speed on mobile data is capped to 300kbs making VOIP and any kind of tethering, streaming.. a nightmare.

gonna play with that SBF after exam!
I just unlocked the HUSPA by following the steps i found on a youtube video (im still a new user so can't post external links but if you search "How to unlock HSUPA Bell Atrix" Youtube user is SilencedReview), uncapping the speeds however my skype is still not working.. getting nothing but static on the other end when i talk..
my speeds are testing fairly consistently using speedtestnet app at ping= 72ms download=7207kbps upload=1191kbps so i know the mod worked..
So im kind of stumped.. a little annoyed.. any ideas?
Bell Atrix rooted on Fido
An update was released for the Bell Atrix on 6/20/2011, and one of the items in the list of fixes says:
Skype
Improvements to call audio function so it is easier for the person you called to hear you. Please note this application is not pre-loaded on phone, but is available for download from Android Market.

Fix only helps intermittently. I made one call and it was clear (with a few drop outs but no 'wind storm'). I proceeded to make another over speaker phone and sure enough the windstorm was back...

After the Bell upgrade, I was able to use a SIP client (CSipSimple) to register to a SIP service and make good quality calls over both WiFi and mobile data. Prior to the upgrade I could register, but the quality was so choppy it was unusable. I'm guessing the "Skype" fix is the same thing that fixed this. I use VoIP.ms service, and it works well now.

[Q] Video Calling (Real video call, not skype or google talk)

Hello All.
I was hoping someone could advise me on how to make a normal carrier based video call. I've looked everywhere and am a little shocked to see that my atrix does not support video calls.
when calling my atrix from another phone on the same network that supports video calling (Telecom New Zealand XT network which is UMTS(WCDMA)) i get 'cannt call, other phone does not support video calling'. hmph!
can anyone help?
many thanks
Gavin.

Wow, for real? There is Qik, Skype, Gtalk, Tang, Yahoo Messenger, Fring... Just because there is not a carrier specific one (Hardly any carrier actually supports carrier specific video calls)...who cares?
You looked everywhere? LOL with what, Bing?

Carrier based video calling is actually pretty common outside the US, even though it is almost completely unheard of here. I'm a little surprised the international versions of this phone don't support video calls, but not surprised at all to see that feature lacking on the US version.
Have there been any Android phones that do this? I know the international version of my old Fuze (Touch Pro) had an FFC and did it even though the AT&T version didn't.

Unfortunately android phones don't support standard video calling.
And yes, most of the world has a standard video call that works same on all carriers, even between carriers works. The usa is the only place that does not have video calling.
Does anyone know why this is though?
And does anyone know how video calling (direct, not third-party like google, skype, fring, etc.) works exactly, I get that a line is connected between the two phones, but what about information sharing? Are there any special permissions needed to use this direct data connection?
What about the video/sound compressors?
Why doesn't America feature this?
I hope i didn't go off topic, but I am rather interested in this......
Will google, and if any cares/helps me find me answer, i will post everything i'va gathered

it uses your data connection to stream video to each other. plain and simple. uses the same data network as your phone's internet.
Actually my friend has a galaxy s ii which does have carrier video calling.I wonder how I can enable it on my atrix with gingerbread loaded, fresh from motorola update...

i don't know what "HLR" is, but Qik, Tango and Google Talk Video (the apps that work on the Atrix) are not carrier dependent. i've gotten all three to work fine on a Galaxy Tab Wifi (no cellular carrier).

Ah yes they will work because they just use any old internet connection.the service I am looking for runs over the carrier. Hlr is home location register. Or your subscriber profile.

yeah even in canada rogers had this service but it didn't take off as the cameras sucked and there wasn't much use for it when you add in the screen size of the phones that had it. I had it on my HTC TyTn and Touch Pro. I think one carrier was looking to roll it out in the US. AT&T was against it so all those winmo devices that came out on their network had the front camera taken out. I could be wrong, but the Iphone 4 was the first device where they allowed it.

I confirm that some Android phones have a carrier video calling feature.
I own an Atrix 4G (2.3.4), and my wife owns a Samsung Galaxy S II (2.3.3)
And yes, there is a video call option in her phone's dialer.
We live in Moscow and have different carriers. 2 days ago i bricked my Atrix 4G trying to unlock its bootloader, so i had to stick back to my rubbish Samsung Z510. As soon as i put my sim-card into it and powered on the phone i could see a "3g" icon in status bar. And yes there was a video call option in my z510's dialer. It worked like a charm. Carriers video calls in Moscow cost the same as regular voice calls, so i'm quite interested in finding a way to mod my atrix as soon as i get a new one instead of bricked one. From today the source code of Atrix 4G is opened and i just hope that xda developers will pay attention to adding carrier video call in their future custom roms.
You can also try Oovoo. It works for both computer to phone and phone to phone calls.

android dialers doesnt support yet, just with apps we can do that...
I use Tango. worked better than fring for me.
but I live in California.
so then... I guess my input is useless...
sorry. :\

please note this thread is just for network provider provided video calling.native to the network. So apps like skype etc are not related to this thread. Android does do video call on the galaxy so it must be a mater of time before someone makes this work on atrix.
Many thanks.

[Q] stock video calling app on att nyc

Hello , I have been trying to troubleshoot the problem where the native video calling app in my dialer simply has never worked. at least not by itself. a while ago I was able to make video calls with it but only if I had Skype for android installed .This isn't a huge problem as I have two video calling apps that work just fine TANGO and GOOGLE HANGOUTS. I have seen this question asked but not answered. I called ATT and they said that the phone is not optimized for use in USA. also they don't support the international variant. Samsung us just gives long distance numbers to UK.
Again not a big deal but if someone knows how to get this working on ATT in NYC USA please do tell.
