(Guide) How to Side load apps! - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

It's pretty easy but a guide never hurts!
The first way is to download apks straight from the internet. Credit to yaggermr for finding this first. Thread Here
1. Find your apk. Heres some to get you started
Go Launcher
Amazon appstore! You need to enter your email and they will email you a link.
2. In your notification area, when the download is completed click on it to open it. A popup will appear click the second option package installer. Now click on install. and you are done!
3. To find your apps click the nook button then click search and start typing in the app you want.
The second way is to use ES file explorer I was able to install apk's I had on my SD card through ES.

GO Launcher
**** started new thread ****
I have a rooted NT and GO Launcher v2.65 running with little to no problem except that everytime I reboot any widgets I have added report back:
"Problem loading widget"
None of the apps are loaded on the SD-Card. I've tried a clean install with a reroot with nothing done except Go Launcher and a gapp or two to test the widgets but still get the error. Am I the only one?
On a side note after I rooted I didn't have to search for the Go app link anymore it just accepts the default setting.
Thanks in advance.

This is a Go Launcher error, the program's data has become corrupted. Clear the program cache and then go to the Go Launcher settings and restart the program.

[Q] What am I Missing

I have a gtab with custom ROM Calkulin-Clemsyn Combo Overclock at 1.5ghz V6. It came with VTL Launcher V1.6.1 installed and running great.
I tried to update to VTL Launcher V 1.6.5 without any luck. It goes through the install process but I get a message "Application not installed."
What am I doing wrong???
Thanks.
You're not really doing anything wrong. THe market identified that you have the app, but since you didn't download it from the market (it came preinstalled) it may not install it becuase of that.
just go here:
http://vegantab.gojimi.com/vt-labs/vtl-launcher/
and download the APK and sideload it.
File link: http://vtlab.com/downloads/VTLLauncher_1_6_5.apk
They have instructions on their website, so I suggest you read them first
Still No Luck
I downloaded the app to a thumb drive plugged into the gtab, and opened the file. Told to install, but get the same "did not install" message.

Might be worth trying to uninstall the old one before you try to install the new one. Havent seen this on my gtab, but it happens on my phone sometimes. Uninstall using the Applications settings (or moving the apk if that does not work).
Since it is probably your default launcher you might have to download some other launcher (launcher pro?) and maybe Home Switcher to switch to it, make sure it works, before you uninstall VTL.
Anyway backup your rom (using CWM), before you try removing any system app in case you end up launcher less.

I was able to install astro filemanager through downloaded apk

I was able to install astro file manager via apk. I had to allow outside sites. I usd the package manager when prompted and open after install. I was able to see the system files but i tried to copy them to my sd card with no luck. This does not create a link on the shelf and i dont know how to launch it unless i reinstall from the downloads in the browser. I also attempted other apk some worked others did not. Not sure if this helps anyone I m not a developer just fooling around at Mc donalds playing with my new nook tablet. Maybe this info is already out their if so im sorry.
How about trying to install a launcher like Go Launcher? The Kindle Fire people have some type of success with Go Launcher.
Have you tried rebooting after installing to see if icons appear?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
no but I will.
you'll need a launcher to be able to see your apps. The nook hasn't shown the BN installed apps and the user installed apps in the same place since 1.1.
Very interesting if Zeam or Go are installable. My memory is that the old BN app installer would not install non-BN apps.
I tried a reboot no luck. I Also tried to install the apps from the download location after reboot. I get a problem parsing the file. This could be because temporary internet cache is cleared after reboot not sure.
I have Go running right now on mine and it rebooted into it automatically. If I home button, it goes back to the Nook default UI and I haven't found a way to get back to Go yet.
same her go is running and my other installed apk's are showing up in the app menu
here are some bad pics of go launcher running on nook tablet
Here are some bad pics of go launcher running on nook. With installed apks in the app drawer.
I have File Expert, Market, G Books all installed as well as the Google services APK. Can't log into market yet. I'm a total n00b on this so if more experienced people have advice, let me know.
edit -
Nevermind.. must have been a bad file name or location.. i found another one and it works now.

Yeah, I had done that.. I guess it just didn't like the file.. it was an attachment from here.
Thanks for the go launcher link.
Got the Google account info in via Youtube apk. Access to G+ works fine. Working on market now.

Market keeps force closing though the 2.3.6 market will stay open for a bit. In a twist of irony, the Amazon App store works perfect. Likely no more updates from me tonight.
Summary, download Go Launcher apk and install using Package Installer. Get a File management program, then go to town.
amazon appstore
I have installed amazon app store including all my free apps
from my account. plus opera web browser play on and kindle this rocks.
wave launcher
I have installed wave launcher and added go launcher this can help make up for moments when you need a home button and want to stay in go launcher. Hope this helps.
Is there anyway to get back to the page with "Install from unknown sources" again? I can't find a way of getting there through the settings, and I'm curious if it's even accessible otherwise.

I couldn't find a way. I hacked one of my test apps to launch it. Download the tgps_launcher, and hit "start".
http://comptonsoft.com/test/
I just found that double tapping the N button in Angry Birds will let you chose which launcher to use.
Now I can use ADW on this thing.
Is Kindle Reader app installable? That would make it worth it. Also are the apps all being installed in the 1gb or can they be installed in the BN partition?

[Q] rooted my nook and have a couple of issues

Ok so I succcesfully rooted my NT using indirect's method but some issues have popped up
1) not all of the google apps are showing up. Not in the app drawer or desktop.
2) titanium backup will not run. I can use root explorer and change to the r/w method though.
3) its no longer seeing my sdcard
4) I'm using ADW launcher and all the menus are white font with a white background(I know this hasn't been resolved yet)
Anybody know why some of this stuff is happening?
Sorry, I would post this in the development forum but don't have enough posts yet.
Thanks!
1) not all of the google apps are showing up. Not in the app drawer or desktop.
Not all GApps are installed via Indirect's tools. Just the basic "foundation", so you can get other tools in the Market, and/or side-load.
2) titanium backup will not run. I can use root explorer and change to the r/w method though.
Try a different APK, and make sure you're rooted.
3) its no longer seeing my sdcard
Reboot. Make sure it ain't corrupted. Sometimes clicking it back out, and back in will help it register with the hardware.
4) I'm using ADW launcher and all the menus are white font with a white background(I know this hasn't been resolved ye
You can press and HOLD, and it'll change color to one you can read. If you slide off the key, it won't "press".
Good luck.
I also rooted my nook and am having some major issues
I followed all of the steps. I was only able to access the App Market by running the debugging app again, however my nook updated and now its telling me I can't download the debugging app for safety reasons. I know I still have the apps because my kill task app is in the bottom corner, but I can't access them.
Also, I tried to unroot and start over and my nook won't allow me to download the unroot app. HELP pls So if I can't start over and can't uninstall, what can I do? I even tried to restore it to factory settings and it only changed my keyboard back to the nook keyboard.
I figured I could download what I wanted from marketplace but I did want to make sure something didn't go wrong there. As for titanium, I've unistalled and redownloaded it several times without any luck. I'm not having any problems accessing SU so I'm assuming I'm rooted, correct?
Btw, sort of off topic but the XDA app force closes on me whenever I click on a topic lol

How To Sideload Apps on Nook Tablet Firmware 1.4.3

Hi Everyone,
I found out a way to sideload apps on Nook Tablet running 1.4.3! This is not a scam or whatever, it actually works. I will walk you through the steps.
Step 1: Search crunchyroll.com. (All this is done on the Nook, not on PC). It is the first link, click on it
Step 2: Click on the picture/ link Get it on Google play
Step 3: You will be asked to set up or login with a google play account (gmail account). One you have done this and agreed to everything, you will be on the crunchyroll app page.
Step 4: In the top right corner click the search icon and search nt hidden settings. It will be the first app on the list that shows up. Click on it and download it.
Step 5: Once it has been download and installed, click on the nook home button and hit search, and search nt hidden settings. Click on the app then once it has been opened click Hacks. If you are asked to give permission to allow something, click allow.
Step 6: When you are in the Hack settings, click on Unknown Sources Hack. Something should then pop up which says something like NT Hidden Settings has been granted superuser permissions.
Now you are done! I would recommend downloading ES File Explorer, then download the Google Play Store Apk and then go into File Explorer, and find where you downloaded it to. Then click on it, click install and choose the option verify and install. Once it has been installed you will then not need to use crunchyrolls.com to access the play store. Remember, you can only open apps by searching for them they will not show up in apps. To get around this get an app called Honeycomb Launcher.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
Wow!!!!!
This is amazing. I can't thank you enough. I've been flashing JellyBean from my sd card, but it can be so unstable and freezes. This is awesome.

No launcher on boot

Hi all,
I bought a Fire HD 6 yesterday and this evening I followed the [Root] OS 4, 5.0.n and Install Lollipop & Gapps ("Newbie Friendly") guide and all went well. I got YouTube, Chrome and some other apps installed and set up all my email and social media accounts.
Then I thought I'd try using a different launcher so I installed Nova from the Play Store. After a bit of playing I uninstalled it.
About an hour later I powered down my FHD6 and on booting up I now get a black screen with the arrow, circle and square buttons across the bottom. The square button shows a screen saying "Your recent screens appear here". I can pull down the menu from the top and get into the settings menu but there seems to be no way to launch a launcher or any applications.
I do have adb access and Android File Transfer application on my Mac still recognises the file system.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
----update
I tried manually launching the Fire Launcher with
am start -n com.amazon.firelauncher/.Launcher

But that had no noticeable effect. I also tried installing the Nova Launcher APK files over adb and that did nothing either.
I think I'm out of talent at this point, hopefully one of you guys will be able to point me in the right direction.

You need to enable fire launcher: adb shell pm enable com.amazon.firelauncher and reboot. That should work, but some people say they have lost the launcher permanently when they uninstall a custom one with stock disabled--so post back if further problems.

Thanks for the response. Sadly that didn't work. Terminal confirmed "Package com.amazon.firelauncher new state: enabled" but after rebooting it's still missing the launcher.
To clarify I did install Nova Launcher but I didn't think I did anything to disable the stock one. There was no obvious option (on the device) to set Nova as default, I read some posts about commands to disable it but wasn't ready to commit so after playing with it for a bit I decided to uninstall it.
---update
Weirdly when I got home and it auto connected to my wifi it suddenly started chiming to tell me that I had new emails and twitter notifications. Clicking on the notifications gets me into the apps and they work fine but without a luncher it's still pretty useless. It's really odd.
---question
As I still have root and adb can I just pick up again from some step in the tutorial I followed the first time around?

Could you explain how I do this? This is my first android device so I'm a complete newbie here.
My GoogleFu found some articles that suggested I just need to copy the APK file to /system/app and then chmod it to 644.
I've tried doing this through adb shell as su and I get an error when I try to move the file telling me that it's a Read-only file system.

You don't need to make Nova a system app for it to run, only to make it use widgets. First try this and see if the Fire launcher is running after the reboot.
adb shell
su
(make sure you have # prompt and if not, post)
pm enable com.amazon.firelauncher
pm disable com.teslacoilsw.launcher
Type exit 2 times to get out of su and then: adb reboot
If Fire launcher is running, go back into su, type these commands and reboot and post the results:
pm disable com.amazon.firelauncher
pm enable com.teslacoilsw.launcher

Maybe. Do you remember what else you did besides installing Nova? Any "unusual" apps? Any adb commands? Please look at settings>device>system updates and post the build date.
Before I installed Nova Launcher I installed:
Auto Trader
Chrome
eBay
Facebook
Hearthstone - which was pretty laggy so I uninstalled it
LinkedIn
London Tube Map
Messenger
Rightmove
Skype
Spotify
Twitter
YouTube
Zoopla
I have also just now installed BlueMail as the Amazon one won't launch anymore since it started working with Nova Launcher.
The build date shows as Thursday, 24 September 2015, 03:51 BST (Fire OS 5.0.1)
I don't remember running any funky adb commands. I tried following a post to kill the ads on the home screen but it was for an older version of Android so adb just didn't recognise the commands.
I don't see anything that might have caused the problem, unless you disabled Silk browser to make Chrome work (and I really don't think that's it). It's possible your bin file was corrupted, but if so I'd expect other stuff to be broken too.
Please get gatesjunior Debloater tool, here on xda, and see which apps are disabled. I'm going to pm you with options.
Sadly I can't run debloater as the Mac version doesn't seem to play nice with El Capitan. If I can get access to another machine at some point I'll report back what was disabled. For now though I'm just really happy that you got it working again, you're a star!
Thanks to everyone on this forum for all your knowledge and guides.
Well that didn't last long.
I just couldn't resit tinkering with it. I tried to make Nova a system app because widgets didn't work. I followed this tutorial . I followed the steps through using ES File Explorer. Copied the com file to the SD card folder, cut it to /system/app/ modified the permissions, rebooted my device and I got the Fire screen for several minutes. I did adb reboot. It rebooted, said it was installing the latest software and I'm back where I was before.
I have the black screen with arrow, circle and square. Although fortunately ES File Explorer is still open so I can access that if it helps?!?
I used ES File Explorer to copy the file from the SD Card back into /data/app/ and then deleted the one from /system/app/. I then adb rebooted and tried the pm disable com.amazon.firelauncher, pm enable com.teslacoilsw.launcher again. But no joy.
If I want to start again where should I start from as the device is still rooted?
Turn off wifi and try a factory reset. Root and gapps survive a reset. First, disable Nova and enable Firelauncher. Then factory reset, wait through VERY long restart, enable USB debugging and then reinstall superSU with this command: adb install -r filename.apk
If your bin file was corrupted, this may not fix the problem and I'll tell you what to try next.

I had difficulties with the fire launcher so had to get rid of it..
Since you can still access es explorer, another alternative is to install lucky patcher and launch via ADB. Copy and paste the code into ADB to launch the app.
Code:
adb shell am start -n com.android.vending.billing.InAppBillingService.LUCK/com.android.vending.billing.InAppBillingService.LUCK.patchActivity
Then you can convert to a system app
Please stop promoting Lucky Patcher here.
@idwxyz There's a play store app, /system-app mover, that converts user apps to system.

I turned off wifi, went to settings > reset to factory defaults. It took a while to erase and reboot. I then reinstalled superSU with that command. My device is now working fine with the stock launcher all the stock apps and the Play Store. I also checked through section D of the tutorial to make sure all the settings were still in place before switching on wifi.
Then I installed Nova and Nova Prime, disabled the stock launcher, enabled Nova and everything worked. Then I tried going back the other way, I disabled Nova, enabled the stock launcher, adb rebooted and it booted up into the stock launcher.
It all works!
I used /system-app mover to make Nova a system app and now widgets work too. Thank you so much!
