How To Sideload Apps on Nook Tablet Firmware 1.4.3 - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Hi Everyone,
I found out a way to sideload apps on Nook Tablet running 1.4.3! This is not a scam or whatever, it actually works. I will walk you through the steps.
Step 1: Search crunchyroll.com. (All this is done on the Nook, not on PC). It is the first link, click on it
Step 2: Click on the picture/ link Get it on Google play
Step 3: You will be asked to set up or login with a google play account (gmail account). One you have done this and agreed to everything, you will be on the crunchyroll app page.
Step 4: In the top right corner click the search icon and search nt hidden settings. It will be the first app on the list that shows up. Click on it and download it.
Step 5: Once it has been download and installed, click on the nook home button and hit search, and search nt hidden settings. Click on the app then once it has been opened click Hacks. If you are asked to give permission to allow something, click allow.
Step 6: When you are in the Hack settings, click on Unknown Sources Hack. Something should then pop up which says something like NT Hidden Settings has been granted superuser permissions.
Now you are done! I would recommend downloading ES File Explorer, then download the Google Play Store Apk and then go into File Explorer, and find where you downloaded it to. Then click on it, click install and choose the option verify and install. Once it has been installed you will then not need to use crunchyrolls.com to access the play store. Remember, you can only open apps by searching for them they will not show up in apps. To get around this get an app called Honeycomb Launcher.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Wow!!!!!
This is amazing. I can't thank you enough. I've been flashing JellyBean from my sd card, but it can be so unstable and freezes. This is awesome.

I was able to install astro filemanager through downloaded apk

I was able to install astro file manager via apk. I had to allow outside sites. I usd the package manager when prompted and open after install. I was able to see the system files but i tried to copy them to my sd card with no luck. This does not create a link on the shelf and i dont know how to launch it unless i reinstall from the downloads in the browser. I also attempted other apk some worked others did not. Not sure if this helps anyone I m not a developer just fooling around at Mc donalds playing with my new nook tablet. Maybe this info is already out their if so im sorry.
How about trying to install a launcher like Go Launcher? The Kindle Fire people have some type of success with Go Launcher.
Have you tried rebooting after installing to see if icons appear?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
no but I will.
you'll need a launcher to be able to see your apps. The nook hasn't shown the BN installed apps and the user installed apps in the same place since 1.1.
Very interesting if Zeam or Go are installable. My memory is that the old BN app installer would not install non-BN apps.
I tried a reboot no luck. I Also tried to install the apps from the download location after reboot. I get a problem parsing the file. This could be because temporary internet cache is cleared after reboot not sure.
I have Go running right now on mine and it rebooted into it automatically. If I home button, it goes back to the Nook default UI and I haven't found a way to get back to Go yet.
same her go is running and my other installed apk's are showing up in the app menu
here are some bad pics of go launcher running on nook tablet
Here are some bad pics of go launcher running on nook. With installed apks in the app drawer.
I have File Expert, Market, G Books all installed as well as the Google services APK. Can't log into market yet. I'm a total n00b on this so if more experienced people have advice, let me know.
edit -
Nevermind.. must have been a bad file name or location.. i found another one and it works now.

Yeah, I had done that.. I guess it just didn't like the file.. it was an attachment from here.
Thanks for the go launcher link.
Got the Google account info in via Youtube apk. Access to G+ works fine. Working on market now.

Market keeps force closing though the 2.3.6 market will stay open for a bit. In a twist of irony, the Amazon App store works perfect. Likely no more updates from me tonight.
Summary, download Go Launcher apk and install using Package Installer. Get a File management program, then go to town.
amazon appstore
I have installed amazon app store including all my free apps
from my account. plus opera web browser play on and kindle this rocks.
wave launcher
I have installed wave launcher and added go launcher this can help make up for moments when you need a home button and want to stay in go launcher. Hope this helps.
Is there anyway to get back to the page with "Install from unknown sources" again? I can't find a way of getting there through the settings, and I'm curious if it's even accessible otherwise.

I couldn't find a way. I hacked one of my test apps to launch it. Download the tgps_launcher, and hit "start".

I just found that double tapping the N button in Angry Birds will let you chose which launcher to use.
Now I can use ADW on this thing.
Is Kindle Reader app installable? That would make it worth it. Also are the apps all being installed in the 1gb or can they be installed in the BN partition?

(Guide) How to Side load apps!

It's pretty easy but a guide never hurts!
The first way is to download apks straight from the internet. Credit to yaggermr for finding this first. Thread Here
1. Find your apk. Heres some to get you started
Go Launcher
Amazon appstore! You need to enter your email and they will email you a link.
2. In your notification area, when the download is completed click on it to open it. A popup will appear click the second option package installer. Now click on install. and you are done!
3. To find your apps click the nook button then click search and start typing in the app you want.
The second way is to use ES file explorer I was able to install apk's I had on my SD card through ES.
GO Launcher
**** started new thread ****
I have a rooted NT and GO Launcher v2.65 running with little to no problem except that everytime I reboot any widgets I have added report back:
"Problem loading widget"
None of the apps are loaded on the SD-Card. I've tried a clean install with a reroot with nothing done except Go Launcher and a gapp or two to test the widgets but still get the error. Am I the only one?
On a side note after I rooted I didn't have to search for the Go app link anymore it just accepts the default setting.
Thanks in advance.

This is a Go Launcher error, the program's data has become corrupted. Clear the program cache and then go to the Go Launcher settings and restart the program.

app installing issue

Un-rooted, microSD card, GoLauncher Ex, ES File Explorer, App Manager, AnyCut, Button Savior, Dolphin and probably anything else you wonderful people told me I needed to get for it.
There is an app called Ballero (it is in Android Market) this app is to sync up with a knitting and crocheting forum so it doesn't have a lot of people even knowing about it. I have gotten it from this site http://rav.cldellow.com/. Using stock browser. When I try to install I get told that the install has failed. (This has also happened with GoogleServicesFramework.apk, google-earth.apk, Google_Maps_v6.02.apk which I understood should be able to go on an un-rooted NT.) So with the Ballero I have tried to install, copy/paste the apk to systems/apps, unzip it into a folder called ballero and tried to copy/paste that into the systems/apps folder. I'm told that it cannot be done.
So am I missing something? Does this mean that those apps are not for this version? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Ballero doesn't show up in Market, so it's not listed as compatible wth the NT. However, I had no problem side-loading it from your link with the stock browser.
I'm pretty sure it requires the Google apps/services be installed as it links to Google Maps to retrieve yarn store data. I don't know about sideloading Google Services Framework, but I think you need this and Google Maps before you can install Ballero.
Maybe you're hesitant, but you really should just root the device. It makes things much more functional. If you follow Indirect's instructions closely (don't worry about the manual method, just use the script) on a PC that hasn't had any Android device drivers on it before, it's very easy and painless. Not that you should need to, but root can easily be undone and the NT restored to factory specs.
The root script should also have the option to install the Google apps and Market for you, which in turn opens a lot of functionality on the NT. (I have no knowledge of sideloading these because the root script did it for me).
I'm pretty sure you can't copy/paste anything to system/app without root permissions.

well did you mount the system folder as read and write? the system folder is read only by default, so you need to go into your es file explorer settings to change the permission from read only to read and write.
Thank you very much. You are right I am very nervous about rooting. The more I read here the more I'm learning and slowly getting more confident. Thanks again.
*As you can probably tell his is my first android device. If you know of a good book that teaches more about android os I would be interested in reading it. Thanks again.

[Guide] ViewSonic Viewpad7e - Root, Market, and Installing Apps

I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF ANYTHING HAPPENS, TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK

go download this file from this link:
dl.dropbox.com/u/34743606/v7e.zip
put those five files onto the micro sd card
Step 1:
settings>applications>unknown sources>tick it
settings>applications>development> USB debugging> tick it
Step 2:
Go to the inbuilt app ES File Explorer
find the GingerBreakv1.20.apk
install the GingerBreakv1.20.apk (I installed it on mine but it made my micro sd card useless i dunno what was with this but it still got gingerbreak on it it just made card die so use at your own risk =_= it still install it fine tho might of been a defect of a cheap card)
Root the device by going through the steps
When you complete the steps you should see Superuser in your applications
Go back to ES File Explorer
Find Root Explorer v2.14.2.apk
Install Root Explorer v2.14.2.apk
Click allow for permissions for the Root Explorer
Once you have Root explorer installed open it and fine the folder sd card
Press and hold the Vending.apk until the menu pops up and choose copy
go back to Root Explorer
go to system
go into app
on the top press Mount R/W
and then press the paste button on the bottom
Find where you pasted Vending.apk
Hold Vending.apk for the menu and press permissions
Make sure all the columns are ticked and select OK
once you get to this step you should see the market icon but you're not done yet you need to go through the same thing you did for Vending.apk for GoogleServicesFramework.apk and MarketUpdater.apk
and you should get it
i'll paste the chinese website the author posted pictures

This all worked perfectly on my Viewpad 7e with one small issue when copying the 3 .apk files to the /system/app folder, make sure they are not a 0kb size. If they are just recopy them over and overwrite the files and it should copy correctly with a valid size.
The market wont have allot of apps since the device doesn't support the market natively, so I did a few tricks to get most of my apps on to the Viewpad 7e. You will need to have access to a second Android devices to do the following.
1) Install File Expert (free in the market) on your second Android device
2) Open File Expert and go to My Apps and select the apps you want to install on your Viewpad 7e, then click Backup on the bottom menu. This will creat the .apk files to install on your Viewpad 7e and put them on your SD card.
3) Copy the .apk files from SD card to your Viewpad 7e
4) Open a file manager on your Viewpad 7e and install your apps.
Most apps will work ok but some will bug out and you might be forced to reboot the viewpad 7e (press and hold the power button until it powers off)
If you use Titanium Backups it will install and allow you to restore apps and data, but be warred this will not work 100% so only use it to restore the data not the apps.
Note: If your app was installed on your SD card when your backup was done when you restore the data it will make the app unlaunchable. This should be fine if you move the app to SD card before restoring the data.
Here is a list of my working apps on my Viewpad 7e
aLogcat
androidVNC
Angry Birds (all 3)
Blogger
Chrome to phone
Coin Dozer
Google Docs
Documents To Go
Facebook and Messenger
File Expert
Gmail
Google+ and Messenger
Google Maps, Latitude, Places
MarketEnabler
Google Reader
Root Explorer
Tapatalk
Titanium Backup (debugging error and hangs on restoring some apps)
Google Translate
Twitter (acted odd on first run and needed to reboot, opened fine after)
Vplayer
My Country
The Sims 3
Pocket Legends
Star Legends
Youtube
Order and Chaos
I will add more apps to the list as I test them.
Update 1:
I upgraded the firmware manually since when I tried OTA it wouldn't find my wireless connection (even thou it was connected and surfing).

Hey,
at first thx for the great HOWTO. Everything worked fine for me. The only thing that also bothers me is the memory problem as often mentioned before.
Perhaps its good to know that I'm from Germany and have a branded Device from strato . But before I began with your instructions I installed the official update FV70_VSEI_S_W_C_11252011 so everything should normally worked.
The only thing that makes me curious is that the widget of the apps that were preinstalled by strato are still there. Is there a possibilty that you have to clear the dalvik oder whatsoever cache before the market works without memory problems?
Go to the link, update to 28112011 file. Root it and instal
The market. I have no problems downloading apps from google play but if you see apps that are writtem not compatible, you have to download from one mobile market

The probleme is not that there is no space on device, but that there is no space in "/cache"
The easy workaround is copying /cache/recovery elsewhere on your SDcard or device (to back it up) and deleting it from /cache/
After that everything work fine ...
NB : If you want to restore factory settings, don't forget ... recopy the recovery directory in /cache
It won't brick because there's bootloader that let you reboot with actual settings or loading an update.
NB2 : I haven't had time for now but there's a 2GB unused partition... let's see ...
Ot;
I followed every Point and was able to move the Cache link to sd-Card.
My question goes to the developers. Is there any work on custom Rom eG bootloader or Even cm Mod?i tried to theme it but with no succsess.
Please dev's. Dont forget us viewpad 7e Users.
Since ViewSonic has no clue what adb is I gave this tablet to my kid since that's what this tablet is "A TOY". I will no longer be dealing with this tablet or company and have purchased a ASUS TF300T and will start developing for that tablet.

Sideloading without rooting or wiping?

Ok my grandma has a nook tablet that is 1.4.3 and I was wondering if there is a way to sideload apps without wiping it or rooting it there are certain apps not in the nook market that I want to install on it anyways hopefully you can answer my question.
You could on 1.4.0, but they removed that ability in 1.4.1. If I were you, and she wanted the ability, I would root it and install the gapps package. That way she would have full access to the whole market.

Yes.
Most methods of just rooting will not wipe it. Only flashing a new rom would wipe the device. Look for the SD card root methods in the development section.

Hi Everyone,
I found out a way to sideload apps on Nook Tablet running 1.4.3!
Can you clarify step 2?
