Rooting the phone for a friend... NAKED CHICK INSIDE... - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My buddy has an x10 - noticing horrendous/odd battery life. I am no stranger to Android and have convinced him to root and try a custom ROM.
He will need stability and battery life... I don't see him becoming a flash-a-holic like some of us.... at least not yet.
First things first.... I was going to follow this guide to root his stock GB build:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305945
Seems like a great guide...
THEN I would like to hook him up with what you guys tell me is the most suitable ROM... CM7 is nice, but I did not know if it was ready for this phone. Solid build and battery life are key. If there is a better non-CM7 build in that regard, would love your opinion.
Thanks guys!
Oh... and for the OP title change... here is your hot naked chick:

Try cm7 rom from zdzihu its the most stablest rom ever every rom from z is ssolid as a stone freex10 is just epic
Sent from my X10i using xda premium

I didn't think any cm7 roms were 100% functional yet? Seems like there is always "something" like camera or wifi issue...
I have only tried Wolfbreak and T.E.A.M., both are based on stock and heavily tweaked w/features added. They are very stable and fast.
Currently on T.E.A.M. and loving it
Whatever rom you decide on, optimize the battery after you flash or at least delete your battery stats.

I vote for TEAM rom. It's great, smooth, everything works. Based on stock and they like stability. Battery time seems good too, and I use the phone ALOT when I'm not at work or asleep.
The ThKernel they recommend (easiest to get in AppMan after installing ROM) is great too, only downside (for me) is the kernel ramps up in call volume like crazy. Lowest volume sounds like a quite speaker phone and there's just a bit of distortion... but if your friend wants loud in call volume or talks on it in noisy places a lot it may be the perfect kernel.

i dont think any tutorial is needed for root now .there is oneclick root in flashtool 4.2.0 and also in superone click....
as for the rom i just Wolfbreak v6..very stable and good battery life..

Thank you all for the suggestions. Hoping I can take the phone today and do some work on it.
I will be looking at the suggested TEAM rom. I agree that CM7 would be nice, but does not sound like it is ready yet. This person needs stability, not features.
I need to research the root methods for the X10 better.... seems there are many ways of doing it and the Flash Tool is new to me. I am used to flashing an update.zip in stock recovery and then using adb to get a custom recovery or using Rom Manager.
Does Rom Manager work well on the X10.... i
What is the easiest method of achieving root on the stock gingerbread? I dont like apps like superoneclick, but if that will work and get me into Rom Manager quickly, so be it.

1.Download flashtool and just press the root button while usb debbuging and unknown sources are checked
2.x10 is not on rom manager yet but will be on it soon
3.T.E.A.M. and wolfbreak rom and ThJap rom all are great stock roms
4.CM7 have bad battery and only other problem is that their is no zoom in camera

wow, so no need to do anything with FlashTool other than press "root?"
I thought I would need to resort to an earlier build of the phones software....
If it is that easy, does the root function include a recovery?
Dumb question, button combo to get into recovery on the X10?
I assume I will just root and flash like normal... previous post makes it sound crazy easy.
Thanks!

oops late replay
yes now its just one click root
and for recovery press the "+" button on flashtool and choose xrecovery
press back button for recovery

this went amazingly smooth. Thanks!

For xrecovery reboot & spam the back button right when you see "Sony Ericsson"

Cooking X8 2.1/2.2 roms [DEV] thread only!

Greetings !
This thread is going to help those willing to cook X8 roms.
I have extracted and uploaded all the files to make it possible for others to join the development process.
Files :
SE X8 Donut sources
Extracted 1.0.A.62 debranded ROM
system.img of latest rom
These files should be all one needs to cook a rom with kitchen from XDA.
I have very little experience cooking roms, so I hope someone more experienced could use files and save time.
Attached are files to boot from /sdcard , these were tested to work for booting "original" rom from the sdcard partition.
To use, make 3 partitions (fat,ext2,ext2), those will be mounted as /sdcard,/system,/data.
unpack system.img into second partition and you are good to go.
So far there's no working cooked rom, but soon it should be available.
Leave your comments and suggestions.
P.S
THIS IS NOT A THREAD FOR TROLLING OR SPAMMING, DO NOT POST IF YOU HAVE NOTHING TO CONTRIBUTE!!!

what makes you think that "custom rom will soon be available"
bootloader is still locked, remember?
no bootloader, no custom rom
Because an X10 Dev managed to flash a Custom Rom without unlocking the Bootloader.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835308
If someone could really cook an X8 2.2 custom rom and make a guide, would be great for X8's owners. Thanks pulpoff
Custom kernels, drivers are not possible till bootloader is cracked.
But a custom rom based on current kernel should be possible...anybody have any clue whether custom roms being made for x10 could be ported to x8(once we get 2.1)?

It's not possible. Answered before in this forum.
So can we use 2.2 based on the old kernel (2.6.29)?

i think the answer is yes,
custom rom for x10 use the old kernel (2.6.29)
and jarpaela said 2.6.29 is not too diffrent with 2.6.32
and x8 kernel is 2.6.29
correct me if im wrong
****! Yes that means we are running donut on eclairs kernel!
Why couldn't they give us eclair in the first place!
Theoretically its possible..but there could be problems of drivers and other compatibility issues if we use custom roms built by jerpelea and zidhzu.
Only if either of them had an x8..
Has any one tried flashing the roms?

i dont think so,,,
maybe donut and eclair kernel is same,
but in theory is true we can use it
but we cant use custom rom develop by j and z
i think we must made it from start...
is it anyone can ask j and z how they can implant froyo on eclair,,??
i think if we know it, we can make it
(except for develop driver for me,)
i think is it hard project but not imposible
sorry for my bad english
Well, I'm doing a Master's in computer science, and I have an X8 that I want to hack and mod every which way from sunday. As soon as my homework load lightens (i.e holidays), I'll start working on it.
I just hope I won't fry my phone in the process, can't really afford to have to buy a new one.
I've built custom linux installs before, so I have no issues getting dirty with Android. Just need to learn how. Gimme some time, I'll work on it.

Well then, if that's the case, why not:
a) grab kernel, drivers, etc @ boot.img from released x8 donut source
b) merge it with aosp 2.1 and tweak the inits
c) root it
d) convert everything to .syn
e) flash through bin4ry's tool
Wouldn't this be "theoretically" possible?
You would think so.
Edit:

Hell, I could take a lookie too. I've got plenty of free time. But I haven't built a linux before. ;( I've installed Arch, does that count? ;D
I'd say it counts. If you want to take a look, go ahead. After all, I'm sure other devs will jump in if you have specific questions that you need answered, rather than "can we get 2.2 for X8 please".
Hell, even Google's bound to have tutorials and documentation about how to go about it.
What's the point of having an open OS otherwise?
What needs to be done to make a working ROM?
The OP states it has included the files to boot a custom ROM. But how do I use those files?
Sorry if I sound hopelessly lost.
Edit: Also.. Um.. What is a ROM Kitchen? This is new to me.

My only problem that i don't know where should we start. I think we should learn too much to get any kind of result on Android front.
Anyway I am open.

2.2 custom rom with best battery life...n kernel stock or custom...

Guyz which custom rom n kernel combo..gives best battery life (esp.2.2)
Try the one in my signature with the special kernal. The ROM is amazing . My quandrant score was 1372. Which is very good if running a ton of apps too. At least give this ROM a look. The dev is a good guy too.
The new kernal makes it better.
Sent from XDA Premium from my X10a rooted running 2.2.1 CM Rom from Rendeiro2005
dev's have really put their great efforts but after all its an operating system ! .. needs to under go alot offfff testing ... therefore no ROM is fully perfect .... i mean wolfbreak trip's n freex10 from z's are stable but the force closes and restarts and lack of support for some apps is really annoying ! .. switched back to stock ROM.
I started to useTripMIUI from a couple days ago and it seems to have more than decent battery life.
I have had the phone unplugged for 10 hours now, a couple of short calls, 3G enabled with data background enabled for 3 or 4 hours, some 45 min to 1 hour of web surfing with direct sunlight (high screen brightness needed), and then some wifi when I found a wifi spot and still 73% of juice remaining from fully charged.
And yesterday I chatted with the girl on google talkgadget (I don't really like the talk software that comes with Android) and every % of the battery lasted some good 6 to 7 min of chatting with screen brightness set to the lowest and internet over wifi.
That compared to Wolfbreak's ROM 3 min per % with the same settings, same talkgadget, same screen brightness (and same girl).
I'm really looking forward to test it a bit more, since I had some bug this morning, I left the phone wallcharging overnight and although the battery stats showed that at some point of the night it was fully charged, when I woke up it was at 92% of charge and draining, I had to unplug and replug to fully charge again.
And the day before something like that happened also, I charged the phone and it had an awesome idle battery life. I started using it and the battery life remained awesome, I left it with 80-85% of juice before going to sleep and when I woke up, the phone was dead, and battery stats didn't show which app drained the battery, just showed how the battery % dropped like a stone during night.
Needs more testing on my side, but looking promising enough to keep it as my main ROM. Though there are some things which I don't like, but not battery related.
Oh, and this being with stock kernel. Custom kernel drains battery, for me at least.
Yes, the MiUi ROM with stock kernal has the best battery life for me.
I´m really satisfied with the Cyanogen6.1.3 gingerbreadv01!
I´ve been using it only for a couple of days & its stable with a much better battery life than i had before. The dev rendeiro2005 surely did a good job with this custom rom!!!
im on trips miui.... final n roms gud.. but i jus cant decide custom or stock kernel. for better battery life...n should i calibrate the battery after the rom installation...
??
I'll have to go with my own mixed ROM... It is a mix of Zdizihu's FreeX10 beta 4 + Arc Launcher + Circle Battery Indicator in Notifications bar + Cyanogen Settings.... It has no tweaks at all and i can tell you it is really fast, stable and the battery last a lot...

Last time I checked (three days ago), custom kernel drains battery life at a fast pace, I think i needs more development, as of now, you better stick to the stock kernel if you really need the battery life.
I'll be trying Wolf's latest release to see if there is any improvement on battery life (which was good enough on previous releases). As today I really needed fast 3G and GPS, and 3G is snail paced on baseband .52 on my network. And GPS failed to locate me. Really disappointed on MIUI on those departments, otherwise great ROM. Great batery life and great tweaks to make it very snappy even on stock kernel.
miui by tripn with stock kernel goes with the best batterylife for me 2. and no problems with gps and 3G so far. everything works for me the best in that rom, even the camcoder works realy great.
tested the custom kernel, was realy reducing the battery life, but with stock kernel it lasts 2-3 days at normal use.
try this one ,, CM 6.1.3 Update V06
Battery last for years with this Rom !!!
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
If you experienced Battery Drain ,, You have to reupdate your phone with SEUP ,, and then reinstall the rom
This is tested and working like a charm
also ,, this maybe useful

heard that they will be out this week..
best kernel is Rage kernel and best rom (battery, music, stable) is ginger-crustz rom by Lasan
hybrom v16 more stable with x kernel. and now i do try with hybrom v17.
I think CM7 RC3 is super stable..... www.get.cm ......
I am using CM7 for a month now, with Rage kernel, and believe me when i say.....its the fastest, my phone can get.
U can flash dual speaker fix by @someguyfromhell and it works like a charm. Though i wasn't able to figure out Xloud, but still....ringtones are pretty loud (i dont listen to music on the speaker).
Battery life is awesome......It's as stable as the 2.3.4 stock ROM!
If you don't want overclocking flash Hybrom v17 + bboof kernel

*screen light not stable its sometimes give a look like shaking(i dono hw to describe the problem)where the screen dim and light on back on very fast looping mode.
*sometimes boot by itself.
*so much of laggy compare to my stock rom before i get rooted.(cannot play games without lag, smetimes cnt even press anything in the game)
*when i enter any application it took so much time to open even i got no apps running on back.
So,can anyone help me to suggest what m i suppose to do?i thought also wanted to use custom kernel and rom.if u think that will be more best please infrm me which kernel and rom will be perfect and trouble free from those prblm i mentioned.

My X10 randomly reboots with every rom

hi, I have my xperia x10 now for about 2 years and since some weeks my x10 reboots a lot when doing things. I tried many different roms and with all the same from cm7 to cm9 to mokee and stock roms.
I think my processor is getting to hot or something that he starts to reboot or something i dont know.
Does someone know how to fix this or what rom will be the best to use ?
i hope someone knows the answer and can maybe help!!
regards,
Jeroen

Since you said you tried CM7/CM9 I'm assuming that your phone is rooted and bootloader unlocked.. if yes then you need specific kernel for a specific ROM...
Fxp kernels for cm7 and cm9
DoomLords kernel with wifi fix for x10s/tech devil ROMs
Fear kernel for feraroms...
Download and do a clean install(delete everything from your MICRO SD card, wipe system, cache and dalvik. Mouth system, cache and wipe them) of kernel and ROM....

You r not screwed.... chill its ok.......... If you have a card reader use it or mmc to SD card adapter and plug it into laptop... then you can copy what zip files you want onto memory card...
look for this kind of readers from eBay/best buy/amazon/chroma/big bazaar. Etc.....

Once you have it download and install any rom with required kernel....

thnx all for your responses!!!
Why u think the battery is the problem? my telephone doesnt fall out he only reboots very often.. sometimes 3 times after eachother.
I am now using the original 2.3.3 software from sony ericsson. I uses updater service. Now still when i do many things or use a large number of the processor he trips and reboots...
i dont like standard android 2.3.3 software is there any rom that is light and runs smooth with some nice things.
I think its not recommended to use a android 4 rom isnt it?
thnx for your great help all!!!
regards,
Jeroen
checkout the rom below... i found it very light/stable and fast... currently using it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1802857
i wont suggest ICS/android 4.0 roms as they drain battery faster...

Had the same problem until I replaced the battery kept shutting down on me at 85% charge now its back to normal cost me £5 for a new battery
Make sure to follow battery instructions then carry out a battery calibration aswell then after a few full discharges and full charges you'll be back to how it used to be when the phone was new
Hope this helps

[Q] 2.1 vs 2.3

Hi all,
Is there anyone who has tried both 2.1 and 2.3? I only got my x10 a few months ago so it came with 2.3 already on it, and i don't want to lose all my data my downgrading it to 2.1 just to find out it's crap.
So are there any massive differences, is it worth trying 2.1 or is 2.3 better?
Also i read about a unofficial camera fix for 2.1, if anyone has anymore information about that?

Why dont you root your device and install custom roms... there are a lot of custom roms and Xperia S apps are ported to our old x10

why should you go to an older version if your statisfied with your current? I must say i didnt try 2.1 (only 2.3, 4.0 and 4.1) and 2.3 was best, so i returned. little tip: cm7 (by m&m or zidhzu) has awesome performance or try dixperia 7 it is beautiful and the best stockbased rom i had.

I have used both of them. I must say 2.1 is much faster then 2.3 (official versions). Also You must consider that there's no clear way of moving apps to sdcard (of course there are apps for that) and also You have to think about apps. Most of the apps are written 2.3+ or even 4.0+ so some of them might not work.
I think always the best ROMs were 2.2.

Sorry but I have to disagree with your decision. 2.3 is much better on terms of performance and speed. Coming from someone who got my x10 stock with 1.6 donut. 2.1 was awefull IMO.
Anyway, @op just flash a custom ROM, they are far better than stock will ever be ^^

I always prefer dixperia, it was my first rom and so i cant give an objective review. It felt better than Dixperia 8 stock based/ Sstyle (that i tried directly after) and very clean and as a great contrast to stock. M&M had a "rocksolid" feeling, it was the first cm rom and really good performance. As stupid as i was as noob i choose the wrong baseband (.67) in aroma and i didnt have fun for long...
I suggest you, if you love feelin and theming of cyanogenmod of course the cm rom, if you like the sony xperia s- style and a fully working camera then head for dixperia 7 (stockbased rom-> best camera).
I am at Dixperia 8 Gaming and i will probably stay at it, it is really worth it! You have to become Premium User to get it but it is really the best rom I ever had.

stick on your 2.3 version, got many features on 2.3...
If I remember way back when, prior to GB 2.3.3, there was no WiFi hotspot or USB tethering.
And now that I have apps and widgets from the XPERIA S on my XPERIA X10i and that kind of cool.
My XPERIA S home launcher with home page folders is way cooler than anything you can get on GB 2.1
