The Preview/Review thread - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Thought we could have a thread with a list of all the reviews/previews out there since it looks like the veil has been lifted.
First one from engadget, haven't had time to go through it yet! It's a pretty big one.

edit: I realize there is another new reviews thread but thought I would create this one and keep the first post updated with stuff people find.

Nice! Thanks, actually read the whole thing... Looks good!!!

man some of the swipes still looked unresponsive and stuttery. i was going to wait for flash to be implemented but i think i'm going to try to get ics on it asap.

Man I have school tomorrrow along with 3 tests, and I'm staying up right now at 1:56AM watching and reading all these damn reviews. I'm watering at the mouth.

You might add this. It is the original Ritchies Room preview. He is supposed to have 5 videos ready soon as well.
http://ritchiesroom.com/2011/11/28/asus-eee-pad-transformer-prime-first-look/

Got most in the original post. Found a couple more online but seemed fairly redundant. Time for bed and hopefully the promised ritchies room videos will be up by then

1st two Ritchie vids are up now: http://ritchiesroom.com/2011/12/01/question-and-answer-time-for-the-asus-transformer-prime/

That's not fair we made a pre-order 2 weeks ago and so many portals have it already and we don't
last info I got was we will get it in last week in December....

I really hope this isn't an indication that quality control is still going to be poor from ASUS. I went through 3 original Transformers before I got one that didn't have some funky issue (mostly with the display). And all had funky out of balanced speakers.
Sounds like some reviewers got Primes with battery and wifi problems. Hmm.

Yah it is a bit worrisome that 2 reviewers had that problem. Hopefully just a fluke. I am not worried that asus won't replace faulty units but I am just worried that it will take awhile to get a replacement if you need one!
Thanks for all the links everyone

It's a matter of personal preference. I for one like the Prime finish as opposed to the OG transformer.

Thanks to this now we see there were never any real battery issue or wifi issue. They were just sent a faulty unit on their initial test run. All looks like promising data to me on The Prime. Clearly gets the best battery life out of all android tablets very closely matches apple ipad1 and 2. Plus that was just in balanced mode. Just think if he would've put it in battery saving mode he could've easily matched or surpassed Apples battery life. Great news to hear.

Wow, tHey did an extensive library of benchmark tests. The most seen so far by a site. It showed the prime being well ahead of the competition by big margins in most categories/tests. Good to hear.

New Reviews

I'm sure there will be alot of reviews when the prime hits, but until then if you have any interesting videos or articles on the prime post them here.
Heres one that was posted yesterday...
www.ritchiesroom.com/2011/11/28/asus-eee-pad-transformer-prime-first-look/
The guy that made the video said if you had any questions that he would try to address them in his next video which is suppose to be uploaded today or tomorrow.
Felt more like watching an advertisement than a review.

As far as we know from the article and video, they got the Prime officially from ASUS, so they are maybe a bit biased
That thing is going to be AWESOME anyway

Don't most reviewers get stuff from companies to review though?
Either way didn't seem like an overly ad like review, just a first look as its said to be. Really only times he praises it is the design, the nice ips display, and good sound.
But I can see how the look of the video makes it look ad like!

Agreed. Lots of sites get items to review. Not too many can afford to buy all this great stuff!
And I think the video was well done - good production values and style. I didn't feel it was an ad - simply that the blogger was serious enough to put in the work to make a professional video.
in his youtube video, he says that Asus ask him not to put online is next video before the 1th of December. Maybe a hint for the anouncement Asus is still suppose to make aboutt the Prime !

Same for the guys from ZTOP who put the pictures of the pre-production unit up.
It seems this thing is gloing to be great

Probably so, but it's humorous how Apple gets away with those kinds of reviews on a daily basis and no one cares. It's about time Android stuff had some tech sites on their side.
It looked like one of the pictures on his review page was of a high profile video of the Smurfs playing.
I guess he will be showing that in his next review video on Dec 1st?

What exactly would you expect him to say bad in a this review? He actually does have a few criticisms but really its a pretty general look at the unit and I am not surprised he is impressed with it. The only things he praised that we wouldn't really know ourselves is the ips+ screen and the sound being of good quality.
But he still does level some complaints
With slim form factors inevitably comes some compromises, and in this case the outputs on the Prime aren’t as comprehensive as other models in the market.

I think at least one more USB port could have been added, considering the support for USB devices that Honeycomb, and by extension Ice Cream Sandwich, has now integrated into the platform, making it easier to connect more storage devices and other accessories.

not a criticism but shows not a huge bias as well
Along with the Motorola Xoom 2, Samsung 7.7 and other unconfirmed models from major brands, the Prime represents the next generation of Android tablets, adding their own flourishes and customisation to the platform.

Yeah,
I see description is Fashion show in Sweden. The INtel, Asus, Segway booths threw me a curve ball.

Is this the best tablet out or not.

Have read so many negative comments just want to know if this is the best out or what. It has better spec than any other tablet but all I'm reading are complaints. Mine won't arrive til Wednesday and I haven't planned on buying the dock just picked up that black sleeve that reminds me of origami.

Yes, it is the best 10.1" Wi-Fi Android tablet out there. The raging debate you're reading is about how long it will stay that way.
You will always hear negative things about any tablet when they first come out. That should be expected nowadays.

"Best" is a relative concept. seriously. why clutter up the already exploding forum with truly useless threads?

Yes this is the best out for Android right now and probably stay that way for at least next 4 months or so. The negative comments are just the more vocal ones. More are completely satisfied with device. Like me, and others with none or very minor issues. I'm very satisfied with My prime. Best tablet I ever had and I came from an iPad. Which I loved also but the prime just blows away the Competition at the moment. As with any device, there will be initial issues that are real and effect some users. You have to remember they are the minority. Check out the positive prime thread and you will see how easily this device lived up to the hype and more.

I know what you mean..lol at least I prepared my Ipad got my woman to use. Signing off Facebook apps n such and deactivating my email accounts on there so she can add her info. I'll always still have access to it and have certain places in there locked down. So she can't go snooping in places she shouldn't be at...lmfao I still have to transfer websites/bookmarks, resume, etc.. To my prime though. My jail broken iPad is a great device but I have moved on to bigger and better, The Prime.
Thread should be moved to questions or closed. Best or not is subjective and a waste of time especially when OP has stated it has the best specs.

Yes, it is the best Android tablet out right now.
Naturally, the best products out there receive the most scrutiny, so that's why you're reading so many "negative" things about the Prime right now. That's a byproduct of being one of the best products out there.
And as said already, the comments aren't about if the Prime is the best but rather about how long it will be the best. My personal view is that the Prime is an in-between device that is between the 1st gen Android tabs and the wave of 2nd gen tabs coming out in 2012, but I invite you to do your own research on the Prime and on upcoming tablets and to make your own decision on where the Prime stands.

I ran out of thanks. Very well put.
If there's one thing I'm going to take with me when I die, it's that this world is composed of 99% whiners.
To this day, I still see people whine about the stupidest things about the TF101. Some examples are a few people whining about being able to see the capacitive sensor grid under certain lighting at a certain angle. I've seen some people whine about the TF101 not feeling like a laptop. In fact, I think that's the #1 complaint I've seen about the TF101. People bought it thinking they can use it like a laptop.
I've seen people whine about the background moving slightly when you scroll from screen to screen.
I have the acer iconia, and so I've seen people whine about ridiculous things about that as well. Everything from the metalic back is cold to the touch to the sensor grid being visible under certain light at certain angle to it doesn't feel like a laptop.
Why is it that the prevalent whine for any tablet is that it doesn't feel like a laptop? Why the hell do people buy the tablet with the intention to use it like a laptop? Is there some kind of mental block involved here?
This is not to say that I see every complaint as a whine. In fact, I think there are many legit complaints about design flaws, software bugs, etc. You just have to filter out all the whines to see the real legit and constructive criticisms.
The point is don't just blindly look at the negative reviews. Actually read those negative reviews and try to weed out all the whines.
Added by edit.

The Prime is the best tablet with the best Tablet-OS right now.
This could or will change in a few months, but this is normal in these days.
Sorry to say but I am not impressed with this tablet. I want to be, but it is just not happening. I just posted an initial review where you can read the details but to summarize:
- Hard to hold, very slippery
- Horrible keyboards
- SLOW web browser
- Short Battery Life
- No real noticable difference performance improvemant compared to my Toshiba Thrive

- SLOW web browser...as compared to what? An iPad (yes it's not iOS)? or your Thrive? Again see above comment.
- Short Battery Life...you've had it for at best a week, the battery is nowhere near broken in.
- No real noticeable difference performance improvement compared to my Toshiba Thrive....Curious, what do you use your tablet for to measure this "performance"? Your email reading isn't going to get any faster with the T3...

See the above edited quote. It seems you do not perceive the device to meet your expectations...easy solution, return the prime and keep using your Thrive as it is obviously a better solution for you.
My big issue with Prime is that it has gotten lukewarm reviews since release, especially by its users. While people were criticizing my fears and predictions a month ago, reality is that Prime is not as big a step forward as hoped, neither in software nor in hardware.
Hardware seems to be flawed with weak WiFi and the chance of getting a device with some sort of hardware flaw, including light bleeds, weak GPS, dead pixels, weak and unresponsive touch screen, screen that is dusty from behind the glass, or a device that just does not turn on, is higher than that of an average new product. Especially when compared to Apple's releases, which - while not flawless - hasn't made me fearful for the products quality that I am buying. I love Android so much more as a software, despite its weaknesses, simply because the ecosystem and much better openness compared to Apple are worth it for me. It pains me to see a device that has flawed and untested hardware.
Second issue is software. Quad-core does not improve anything much and ICS will not improve things other than (hopefully) the browser. Prime has very little RAM, which I think would be much better for an Android device than quad-core. Prime would be a better device with higher-clocked dual-core processor and 2GB of RAM. And you have to remember that the snappiness of software is highly dependent on hardware too, a recent Finnish review pointed out that the touchscreen is simply weak and not as responsive as it should be, making the software seem slow. This too won't be fixed by ICS.
And let's not forget the issue that I raised very early on about the Prime: battery life. Now that users actually have the device, it has become clear that battery life on Transformer Prime sucks. Everybody was up with pitchforks when I made those early predictions, but those were true predictions. Users report 6-7 hours of battery life in actual use, which is far from 10+ hours. Even with fresh battery this is very little. This means that I could not use Prime as the main device for lectures and web browsing while at University.
I will still be buying it and hoping that I won't get a flawed device, since I'm ordering it internationally and returns are a pain. At least it should be better than the original Transformer. But main reason for my purchase is the keyboard dock. If I did not want the keyboard dock, I would not purchase Transformer Prime.
That makes 3 of us. My wife has gotten mad at me a few times... Lol
I love it, but I am itching for some ICS.

AM I CRAZY!? Or do i have Prime fever :)

Ok here is my story. Either i am OCD, have to much free time or crazy. Which my GF seems to agree with the last one A tad bit about myself i am a electronic junkie. Just in the last 2 weeks ive gotten a PS Vita, a new phone "Samsung Galaxy Note" & of course the other thing you will read below. I just love new technology and utilizing it to its potential. And even beyond what the company intended on. And no im not rich, i think my GF is making me eat Ramen Noodels for the next month lol.
I just got back today from Staples with my either 6th or 7th Prime, lost count lol. I was there at 8am being online showed "low stock" they had one though. I added a extra $106 to get it while returning my Galaxy Tab i bought last night which i never opened.
So basically i bought a Prime around a month or so ago along with a keyboard dock. Love the thing to death & thought the dock was a great addition. Even bought a Microsoft USB wireless receiver so i can use my wireless Xbox controller on games and such. And also bought a micro HDMI to connect to my Samsung smart TV.
My first Prime worked good i think i bought right around the time they were first pushing the ICS updates. But had bad wifi drop off by just walking into my living room. Started reading XDA and obviously it was a problem. So i figured id exchange it for perhaps a better one.
(2nd Prime): Basically identical to the first perhaps a tad better. Kept if for a few days before me and my GF agreed for the price i paid it should perform much better.
(3rd Prime): This is around the time whe started to receive some OTA updates and things seemed much better. Better wifi in my 3rd one which was a C1 serial. Long story short returned and was gonna sit back and wait to see what happens with ASUS.
(4th Prime): Had Prime withdraw, or thats what my GF called it and things started to look up so i got another. The Wifi was pretty damn good this time. GPS was ok while on wifi. Only problem was there was bad light bleed and 2 dead pixels . Figures...
(5th Prime): Exchanged to Gamestop no problem and the 5th was just as good as the 4th with a tiny bit of light bleed but no dead pixels. A keeper. First day or so it ran great. 2nd day i started getting my random one reboot per day, lockups and youtube glitches. Almost seems like it performs flawless the first day and says ok you had enough fun lol. So i returned and did not get another
(6th Prime): So.... after 24 full hours i missed my Prime It's so nice having a tablet to do the tasks i do like web browsing, checking email, youtube. Customizing, rooting/roms and such. So i got another knowing the problems and hoping perhaps it would be a better experience.
The next day they MWC introduces the T700 and i felt slightly shafted. My GF told me id return it and wait out which i kinda agreed. I did just buy a Galaxy Note and i can kinda use that as my Tablet i figured. So after getting my 2-3 reboots per day browser constantly crashing and youtube glitching and no new fix from ASUS. You guessed it i returned it.
Now last night i was really bummed on being tablet-less. I seen Staples was selling the Galaxy tab 10.1 for $399. And the new Galaxy Tab coming out is basically the same thing. So i went and picked up a Galaxy Tab 10.1 for the time being until perhaps the TF700 comes out. Plus the development is great for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 on here rom wise. I could overclock, root, and install roms right out of the box.
So i brought it home and i let it sit on my desk all night. Jumped on XDA on my phone and was reading while i was staring at the unopened Galaxy tab on my desk. Long story short i never opened it and exchanged it for ANOTHER PRIME this morning . I just did not think i would be satisfied overall with the Galaxy Tab knowing the Prime is out.
Something keeps bringing me back to the Prime. This is my last and final shot lol, i even promised my GF that. Something about the all aluminum back to me is sweeter than that of the TF-700 with that plastic strip that looks misplaced. Something about having it now rather than waiting for the new one months away. Something about this damn tablet keeps bringing me back at least. As long as my wifi works as good as my last few units ill be happy i could care less about GPS. I honestly thing the great developers over here can work the kinks out. So as i type this i have a un-opened Prime in front of me. Which is a C1 serial, funny my last two were C2's. So wish me luck!
So i ask you am i CRAZY, persistent or what lol? Anybody else out there like me? Make me feel better! Hahaha. I apologize for the long post. I just felt like i needed to get it off my chest. And its hard to explain something to women about electronics.
PS: Best part so far from exchanging my defected ones is the microfiber collection i have. Those cloths are bad ass!
i havent got a prime yet... but thinking should i go down the same path as i have been waiting for so long lol
only a few t3 tab is shown in MWC so far and they wont be available till june i guess.. unless samsung pull out a quad core tab next month, otherwise i am ready for my long time battle too lool
you remind me of someone else who had prime fever but constantly bashed Asus. yet now he talks of getting yet another one...lmao I'm starting to call b.s. on alot of these stories but yours sound believable at least.
I'd say just open it up and check it out. you know you tempted to anyways..lol. if its wifi is and no bad light bleed, then just keep it and enjoy it. it is a good device and people know it. that's why they keep coming back or hanging around. just let us know how it goes. don't feel bad. we have others who "Supposedly" had the fever worse than you and yet they still coming back saying they got another one. whether true or not. they looking like prime crackheads..lol. prime got people hooked and addicted. good reason to be because it is a great device.
I got my device 12/22 from Gamestop. wifi works great. no light bleed. all around good device. never had or needed to exchange. my 1 device worked great from the beginning and I have an early batch one. use it constantly. always performs 100% for me.

So, you say me going through 6 units is bs? Well, i will be getting another one, just like it too much.

Do you have costco near your area? If so, return it and purchase Galaxy Tab 10.1.... Use/rent it until the next batch of tablets arrive from either Asus, Acer, Lenovo.. Samsung.. or whatever. Costco has 90 day return policy (thus, you can rent your tab for 3 month)......
This is what I'm doing.. granted.. I also have Prime atm (bought a Prime, returned it.. but got another Prime as gift that I can't return as it was purchased from Gamestop =/)
Just opened it . Still in the plastic of course lol. Doing my usual very very first app downloads.
1.Wifi Analyzer
2.Speed Test
3.GPS Test (could care less about GPS but testing is fun)
4.Dead pixel test.
5.Light bleed test
From the start testing using Wifi Analyzer it keeps a pretty good wifi signal in my living room. Close to my Galaxy Note Phone, the Prime just jumps up and down a bit not a big deal. Prob the aluminum.
Using Speedtest, i know not the best way but a fast way to check. Getting 14.5 mbps & my internet speed is only rated to 15mbps. Very very good in my book so far with wifi.
In the dark in my bathroom during the boot, best way to check for light bleed fast. I have a small light bleed in the top left corner. Not super bad just barley creeping through. Nothing that would make me box it up right away and bring it back to the store.
Im upgrading FW now. Will report back. Next step is to remove the plastic and inspect for dead pixels. Crossing my finger there isn't any
It does feel good to have the Prime back in my hands.
EDIT: NO dead pixels wohoo!

feeling guilty..lol but no I wasn't talking about you. nothing wrong with liking device to where you want a good one. but there's obvious signs from people to call b.s. on what their saying. seems some are just looking for attention or a pity party..lol. alot of people in this forum have been called out on lies and contradicting stories. that's what I mean. so me n others tend to take anything they say with a grain lmfao salt.

I have a BJ's & Sams Club no Costco. How are you enjoying your Galaxy Tab? Never opened mine lol. I however have a Galaxy Note which obviously is similar.
How do you compare the Galaxy Tab's screen & colors to the TP. I find after using my Prime & picking up my Galaxy Note the colors seem far punchier on the note.
While vibrant colors are good i still prefer the power of the Prime in ts quad core ness. Like Mickey said in Rocky 2. We need speed, speed speed! Greasy, fast lightning speed! Lol.

I haven't read any BS stories on here yet lol. Maybe im not looking hard enough. I can safely say that all the times i returned my Prime not even 24hrs later i missed it sorely. Even with the problems that some people are having or the ones that i have had its still a far superior tablet to anything currently on the market.
Quick update.
Whoa, just upgraded to the latest OTA. Figured i try GPS for kicks. With wifi "OFF" sitting in my living room it picks up 11-14 Sats in about 5-8 secs. Its cloudy today for reference. With a accuracy of 24 feet. And usually uses about 10-11 of them "in use". I had one with a good GPS but not this good. Especially not being on wifi/
Again to mee GPS does not matter if it works without wifi or not or even at all. This is one of the fun parts the testing lol.

Oh, I owned Galaxy Tab before I purchased Prime. I sold Galaxy Tab when Prime came out... but I returned the Prime I purchased as GPS is important to me (it's funny, but the Prime that I purchased was also from Gamestop but I was able to return it with luck & also it was during the whole Asus announcement fiasco about GPS).
Anyways, it's pointless to compare Prime and Galaxy Tab. When it comes to display, I'll give the slight edge to Prime (Gtab 10.1 doesn't have super amoled)... and if you look at everything else.. SPEC wise, Prime is just superior.
However, when it comes to functionality and my USER experience.. I mostly use Galaxy Tab as it doesn't have the WIFI/GPS problem. I travel often & that mobility is important to me. I hate carrying multiple device (i even purchased bluetooth GPS receiver for Prime but I hate charging & carrying multiple device) & at least with mine, I hardly get any WIFI connection with PRIME when I travel. So, basically.. I mostly use my Prime at home (where I have the control of network setting)... and mostly use Prime for media device.

I've been thinking about that quote last night. How is Asus planning to market Prime when other tablets (especially from asus) drops? Mobile Tech Trendsetters & Early Adopters as Johny Shih put it.. typically are associated with purchasing the latest gadgets. That won't be the case when other Tablets are released... You can't tell a customer 3 month later.. and say.. "purchase a prime & be an early adopter to a device that was released few month ago...."
Don't you find that amusing, and rather poor marketing of Prime in the long run?

I did find it amusing. especially with the early adopter title considering issues being had with too many devices. I'd rather roll with The Mobile Tech Trendsetters. we will always be that since we had the first tegra3 quad core tablets. you could say we started the quad core/high powered/ next evolution of tablet computing.
so I think they need to roll with the trend setter title. early adopter will only bring memories of the gripes many suffered being an "early adopter" lol. I'm laughing now thinkn of all the jokes I seen up here so far in regards to that title. this has been one helluva roller coaster ride with Asus, prime, and this section of the forum.
you right, you can't tell a customer 3 months later he an early adopter still when newer products are released already. but that person can still be the trend setter though. lol.
edit: check out my tegra4 thread..I updated it last night with proof of the second version of tegra4/wayne chip having 8 A15 core CPU and will have between 32-64 GPU cores...directX11 compliant n more. The Godzilla of chips. haven't seen or heard anything that promising or ambitious from anyone.

I'm so envious of you being able to use the stylus of galaxy note to annotate those pics..lol cool. I'm seriously considering getting a Note soon. have you heard or seen that new LG Vu? its a huge phablet phone also but has a 4:3 aspect ratio like Ipad so it makes it look even bigger in wider than the note. I like it. plenty of screen area. its screen just as big as note or even larger. it definitely looks larger with 4:3 aspect ratio. which is different. as most use 16:9 ratio or so.

It says upto .. 8 cores. That and the first WAYNE.. especially when it comes to GPU (seems more or less an evolution from Tegra 3 again while the 2nd Wayne seems far more promising).. it looks lackluster again. But the first WAYNE seems.. like it'll be more or less on par with Qualcomm & TI OMAP quad cores. And they'll all be released around the same period.... so, that should be interesting.
We'll see.. the 2nd Wayne to battle against Intels x86 SoC (and possibly others .. i don't feel like doing links atm) won't be out til mid 2013 or so it seems.
Edit: It's interesting that they are creating 2nd Wayne for Windows 8 & are upping the "cores" for it...

The Note is absolutely one of the coolest gadgets ive owned so far. I had a Galaxy S2 before, so with the Note I got used to the screen size fast. Once you go above 4.3" you won't want to go back.
There is so many cool things you can do with the Note's stylus aside from just scribbling notes on a pad or a picture or "S-Pen" as Samsung insists of calling it. You can google pictures then crop your friends head onto another body, trust me the fun is endless. Samsung actually has a contest going on for 100k,50k, & 25k to the 3 developers who come up with the best app that utilizes the S-pen. Which im sure will be something cool.
Not to mention its like a mobile computer which is a huge plus for me. I did briefly see that new LG phone on engadget & slashgear's site. Seems pretty cool too, ill have to read more on it. But i got use to the size of the Note fast, it makes reading XDA on the go that much easier haha . Everything is just that much easier. I could care less if it looks big held up to my ear. Ive actually gotten alot of compliments on it. Plus i don't make many calls anyway, mostly texting, web browsing and emails. On a side note the call quality is insanely good and clear on the Note. Speaker phone is awesome too.
Holding my GF's iphone in my hand it feels like a toy haha. Nothing against Apple they make good phones. I am just not a fan of the locked iOS, and i am sick of seeing everyone with one. I gave my iPhone 4 up long ago and haven't looked back.

That Engadget review has me a bit on the fence. I'd been leaning strongly toward the TF700 and was set to buy when the Nexus 10 was announced. I was convinced that the N10 was the way to go after reading the first impressions, but seeing how underwhelmed the reviewer was (plus the mediocre battery life) has me again thinking Asus. Guess I'll wait for the next few reviews before making a decision.

I want to see a comparison of the I/O benchmarks. The terrible I/O of the Transformer series made me shy away from that, especially when the N10 was announced.
CNet points out that they tested a presale version, and most likely all of them did, as release is a couple of weeks away. That could put performance and battery issues in perspective, so maybe rather than these Nexus devices being rushed, the test models are rushed by Google, let me see how the Nexus 10 performs out of the box.
All reviews are on pre-release version. Engadget/Verge/CNET everything is running pre-release software. There will be a software update on 13th.
Also, the Chrome was just updated to support N4 and N10 yesterday.
http://googlechromereleases.blogspot.in/2012/11/chrome-for-android-update.html
The benchmarks are totally whacked now for both N4 and N10. They are much poor compared to even some older SoC. I am sure there will be some significant update on the way.

I saw that after I made my post - and had the same reaction as did you. Regardless, I've waited this long to formally jump into the tablet market, a couple more weeks won't kill me.

Let me put things into perspective for you. The GPU of the nexus 10 is 2-4x as powerful as the one in the tf700.
The CPU is comparable.

Exactly. The new Chromebook wipes the floor with competition using the same HW, so either Sammy and Google optimizes the Nexus 10 for the official release (SW upgrade coming before that) or in the upcoming weeks, one way or another, the beast is going to be released.
Another one..
http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/11/02/initial-impressions-of-the-nexus-10-say-hello-to-the-new-benchmark-for-10-android-tablets/
N10 (p)reviews are mixed. One universal criticism is few tab apps, which I suppose is easier to overlook for a 7" than a 10". CNet pointed out the slow charging, slow enough that N10 *discharges* while playing a game (that's pretty bad). It also pointed out that a magnetic pogo charger is supposed to be coming.
The super-hi-res screen is probably not getting the buzz Goog wants for it. Most reviews say it's "as good as" iPad's Retina. IMO anything higher than 1080p on a 10" is getting diminishing returns, and the 2560x1600 res arguably make things worse, since it takes more battery and CPU/GPU power to push all those pix around.
Exynos5 benchmarks are also mixed. Being the first Cortex-A15, it's not a clear performance leader that one would've been led to believe.
Some 4.2 features weren't reviewed, since it's not final. No multi user accts, Miracast.
Unlike the N4 and N7, N10's $399 starting price is typical for 10" and isn't an attention grabber.
IMO, Goog would've been better served by not going with bleeding-edge SoC and display, but something more modest, like 1080p and quad-Snapdragon, and keeping the price down to $300-350, like what Amazon is doing with the KFHD 8.9. That would've helped pushed more sales. As they stand in the reviews, the 2560 screen is a wash, as is the SoC.
Anyway, N10 is a good start. Hopefully, it'll help build out the eco and push the platform forward.
I wouldn't worry to much about the benchies - pretty sure we'll see better performance on release, looks like there is untapped potential in both the N10 and the N4, looking at these reviews.
Real measure for me is I/O performance, else I may still get a TF700.

Well the TF700 I/O benches are abysmal, I doubt the N10 could be worse
What worries me in the reviews are reports that the charger is way underpowered. It takes forever to charge, and the AC charge isn't powerful enough to charge the tablet while gaming or watching video. That's a bummer. I'm getting over the tacky looking bezel, but if takes all night to charge and still discharges while plugged in, its a big fail on Samsung/Google.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
The charging thing is a pretty big issue.Shorter battery life is one thing but slow or no charging makes it much worse.I don't take much stock in early benchmark reviews on a pre-release unit but charging is a hardware problem that sounds like can only be fixed by buying optional pogo chargers. If they are as slow to come out with accessories with the 10 as they have with the N7 you might not even be able to get a charger for it.That would/could be a deal breaker.

[Q] Nexus 10 vs Ipad 4 vs Asus Transformer Infinity?

I'm getting my first tablet but am at a loss how to decide? On the one hand, all critics (Cnet, PcMag, Wired, Engadget, Laptop magazine, ect...) seem to universally agree the Ipad-4 is best hands-down, no question in terms of overall quality as a tablet. Then I compared the Asus with the other 2, and was almost certain I preferred the Asus- some critics even preferred it over the Nexus 10 and expandable memory is HUGE (HD movies on 16 or even 32gb non-memory expandable device is unacceptable in this day and age). Or so it seemed. Though critics like the Asus I've read so many user-reviews about screen-bleeding and a sluggish OS, in spite of its quad-core processor Asus almost seems scary in light of the endless complaints. Now it's back down to Nexus10 vs Ipad and Ipad still seems to be better for gaming with its GPU, its app marketplace is also phenomenal.Thoughts?

Or so it seemed. Though critics like the Asus I've read so many user-reviews about screen-bleeding and a sluggish OS, in spite of its quad-core processor Asus almost seems scary in light of the endless complaints. Now it's back down to Nexus10 vs Ipad and Ipad still seems to be better for gaming with its GPU, its app marketplace is also phenomenal.Thoughts?

You can't go wrong with the nexus 10. It has by far the fastest cpu of the bunch and its storage is lightning fast. More than 5 times faster than the asus. Over 100MB/s read speed. Not to mention its a nexus device and will be updated for years to come.
I think it comes down to your preference. Do you want to be tied to Apple's ecosystem? Are you okay with waiting on jailbreaks to iOS to get root?
I have the nexus 10 and love it. I used to have an iPhone and hated I could not customize it. My cousin had an ipad3 but I prefer the nexus 10.
I bought my mom a tf300 and it is a good tablet if you install the custom checkrom ROM.
In the future I plan to get an otg cable for external SD card option. I have a 16gb nexus 10 and it suits me well.

I was in the same situation as you about one week ago. I sold my Asus Transformer Prime (TF201) a few days before XMas anticipating purchasing the Infinity.
I ended up with a Nexus 10 and couldn't be happier.
For me it came down to having to unlock the bootloader in order to ROM/Kernal the tablet; without having a way to relock it back. The expandable storage was the biggest plus for me, along with the keyboard dock I would have bought to go along with it. But having to void my warranty just to get a somewhat smooth $500 tablet didn't make me too happy. Now, once unlocked and running Paranoidandroid/CM10 on probably KTs kernal it's a whole new beast.
The Nexus 10 was smooth right of the box, and even better once unlocked and running PA2.99/KTManta kernal. It absolutely flies. It looks better than expected, has better sound than expected, and hasn't had a hiccup yet. Now, no expandable memory just means I'm going to be using my OTG cable + external 2tb hd's a lot more, but not a big deal to me. I also got my Nexus from Walmart, the postercompany of being able to return/exchange anything, so that made my decision quite a bit easier as well.
The Infinity is plagued with I/O problems along with a whole slew of other hiccups that leave a bad taste in your mouth. As much I had anticipated gett the Infinity for the last couple of months, I haven't had a second thought about it since I've had the N10 in my hand.
Depends on what you are looking to do with it. If you are a student/ business oriented and need media consumption as well, the infinity if by far the best. Great form factor, keyboard with battery, really fast since the updates and overall great support from asus. Just take a look around these boards and you will see the N10 also has its problem. Poor battery, no external storage, sluggishness during browsing, lag during gaming and media playback, very poor support from samsung and google in terms of warranty support (look at all the articles popping up about Samsung basically ignoring the N10). If you look at the comparison sites most of them that ACTUALLY compare the two say that the infinity is much better. Good luck to ya man!

Keep kidding yourself! Funny how you are in our forums trying to reassure your purchase. The Keyboard attachment accessory is the only thing going for the Transformer series, too bad most of us would just rather use swype or Android 4.2's default keyboard. Infinity will never get updates faster than the Nexus line (did you even get 4.2 officially yet?), thats just fact, "Poor Battery" and sluggishness/lag is more often than not- User error. None of those issues here with mine. Same issues could be said for the 700 and as a previous owner of both the 201 and the 700 there is no way I could EVER recommend either of those tablets over the N10. It's funny the same complaints you make about our tablet just looking over on your boards -- same things

Lol all your doing is confirming my point that both tablets have their problemsand not even the N10 as you so eloquently put it, is without its own problems. Like i asked the op it depends on what he is doing. I could never recommend the N10 for a school or as a business device. The battery life would be horrible and i would not have the external storage to quickly save documents and transfer between devices. Not to mention the lack of the dedicated keyboard. To each their own my friend. Happy your happy with the N10, but i could never go back to it ( mentioned in previous threads that i was one of the first to get an N10 and gave it away to my sister ...) I love my infinity. Its super fast, looks amazing and overall performs its tasks above and beyond what i expect.
Oh and by the way to your point on asus not getting updates as fast as the nexus line....take a look at the galaxy nexus. If experiencing the update a whole 3 weeks before me makes you happy and puts you to sleep at night, by all mean enjoy that. I will take my 3 weeks release plus hardware asus support over getting the updates and having to deal with samsung hardware support any day. Go ahead and try to get the N10 repaired and see what kind of loop holes you have to jump through lol.
Nexus 10 if u want a great stock experience and did not want to void your warrenty. Samsung provides a good hardware support and in case things go wrong the warrenty claims are much easier than in case of other companies. Samsung also has one type of hardware faults which haunts their devices and comes to nitice easily. Third samsung devices are with simple plain designs. Performance wise N10 sits at the top of all android devices.

Again "Poor Battery Life" seems to be unique point for users, not an issue here because I keep track of what apps I have running. I have no problem going for days without charging on normal operation. Then again, I do not sit for hours at a time in front of my tablet. There is nothing wrong with this device as a school device, business I could even say the same 201/700 is even worse performance wise. Just because you have a detachable keyboard accessory doesn't outweigh all the other problems with the Asus, it sure wasn't enough to keep me from taking the device back. Asus support as well- hope you never need it. It took having weeks of having to constantly get a hold of Gary Key and Hai Trat (do you even know who they are? Have a look) on here to have an issue resolved since there policy on the phone is take your information and never call you back- Like you said tho to each his own.. if you enjoy owning an underperforming tablet, in the same price range- that's all you :highfive:
IMO, BT Keyboard also works with N10. BT keyboard sounds a lot better because it is probably cheaper and can be used on other devices too not like the ASUS dock (if you buy a new tablet then you are screwed).

If you say you dont sit in front of your tablet for hours on end....then why would you recommend it as a school or business device...which requires to sit in front of it for hours? Im confused on your logic there....And gary key is the forum head for asus who keeps up to date on updates and any issues we might have. Why is that relevant? Are you trying to insult my intelligence? Im simply stating my opinion to the OP. Whats wrong with man? You do know its ok for someone to disagree with you right? lol calm down... If you like your N10 then thats great for you. I personally dont like it as a student speaking and would not recommend it...so again...calm down lol its ok...

You insulted your own intelligence when you suggested that Asus' support is any better than Samsung's. The link is there for you to read thru plenty of disappointed people and if you'd like I could probably link at least 5 others complaining of nightmares with the RMA system. Of course it's ok to disagree, why do you think I replied to your post in the first place? Nothing to calm down about, sorry if you can't take valid counterpoints to your argument.

Very true, but the kicker is that the asus keyboard has an extra battery, usb out and a full SD card slot. So it does offer alot more than a simple BT keyboard.

Also im not a huge Apple fan, nor are most people on here, but if your just looking for the simplest functioning device out there, the ipad might be your best bet. However you will be paying a premium for their hardware.

Not to jump on the bandwagon, but only part of that I can agree with is the lack of external store.
Especially when comparing to Asus; the company that released the Infinity mere months after the slew of issues that plagued their newly released Transformer Prime TF201. Of anyone, Best Buy did the best to their customers by offering to exchange their <2mo old top of the line table with terrible wifi performance, little to no GPS functionality whatsoever (until the later released GPS Extension Kit), complete bluetooth dropout when streaming, an factory unlock program that doesn't unlock about half the Primes it's tried on for some reason, a one-two month wait time on sending it back to Asus for a RMA on the above issues. No, I didn't go through any of that whatsoever when I had my Prime over the course of 3 months.
In response to Gary; he, along with Tien, were brought on to handle the bad press arising from their tablet issues. I dealt with Tien in order to get my Prime RMA'd. For some reason his email wouldn't accept or send anything to my g-mail account, so we used the PM on xda to communicate. At best I would get responses in a few days, other times couple of weeks.
After all that, I was still super stoked to get my Asus Infinity after my Prime sold. Then I realized that in order to get a tablet that isn't laggy, relentlessly stuttering and constantly having hangups, I would have to void my warranty whatsoever, with no way back. And in the off chance the (Asus supplied) unlock tool didn't work, I would have to deal with un-bricking it to try again. Go try to play with one in Best Buy and LMK how long it takes for you to hate it. You can't type "amazon.com" in the browser open page without it lagging.
Don't get me wrong, the Transformer is super nice; it's just riddled with a ****ton of crappy I/O performance issues and lack of warranty from day one. The N10 works with SD cards mounted via OTG cable, so you can use whatever external storage you want (SD Cards, USB HD's, etc); and if anything goes wrong you can relock/unroot and return it for repairs. I'm running ParanoidAndroid+KTManta kernal, but even on the stock AOSP setup everything just works.
Also, most if not all reviews of two point toward the Nexus.

The exchanges they were doing was all under the table according to their return policy, it was not something Best Buy officially endorsed. That was how I got my 700, I exchanged the 201 for it there.
