Why would calibration affect battery life? - HTC EVO 3D

Okay so every time you flash a ROM, people say you should calibrate your battery, that is fully charged it, let it drain, then recharge back to full to optimize battery life.
My question is, why the heck would that affect the actual battery consumption? Sure it makes sense that if it's not calibrated, it may incorrectly report the wrong % of battery left but how does that change how long the battery lasts. It would make sense that after a calibration, the phone would more accurately report the percentage of battery left but I don't understand how it changes the rate it at which battery juice is being consumed.

just a guess: could there be build in shut-offs when the % reaches a certain level? So if the % says 0, the phone shuts off even if there is more juice there?

That's what I thought too! It's just that, there's always so many people complaining about bad battery life and then other people telling them to calibrate the battery and they come back saying "oh yayyy, my battery lasts forever now!"

Just draining it and fully recharging it is NOT calibrating the battery. That is not the procedure to do a calibration.
It *can* lead to better life by recalibrating the full point and empty points. If the ROM isnt reading the battery life properly then it can look like you have much less battery than you do, or that it is draining much faster than it is.

By my understanding, because of the way modern phones are set up to display battery life, sometimes the meter will read differently from the actual battery life. Your meter might read 100%, but you really might only have 85% or 90% charge. Calibrating helps to bring these measurements back into parity, increasing the perceived battery life of your device by allowing you to use a full, accurately read charge.
One thing I do know, the bit about letting your battery run to empty and then recharging is outdated information. The batteries we use nowadays don't benefit from that kind of behavior.

Calibration is for the phone not the battery, the phone needs to adjust itself to the battery %, seems to fix itself for me over time, through reboots, etc seems to get really good battery life, placebo effect is in motion....

"The battery indicator in the status/notification bar is a reflection of the batterystats.bin file in the data/system/ directory."
No, it does not.
This file is used to maintain, across reboots, low-level data about the kinds of operations the device and your apps are doing between battery changes. That is, it is solely used to compute the blame for battery usage shown in the "Battery Use" UI in settings.
That is, it has deeply significant things like "app X held a wake lock for 2 minutes" and "the screen was on at 60% brightness for 10 minutes."
It has no impact on the current battery level shown to you.
It has no impact on your battery life.
Deleting it is not going to do anything to make your more device more fantastic and wonderful... well, unless you have some deep hatred for seeing anything shown in the battery usage UI. And anyway, it is reset every time you unplug from power with a relatively full charge (thus why the battery usage UI data resets at that point), so this would be a much easier way to make it go away.

The whole idea of erasing that file having any effect on battery life is pure superstition and wishful thinking. The battery usage UI describes what your device has been doing that has been consuming battery; it doesn't change how the device is using the battery.
You want to "refresh" your battery stats? Charge your phone. When you unplug it again, the device knows it's at full charge (because the battery firmware says so), so the stats tracking treats that as a known milestone for reporting purposes.

well, franciscofranco, our kernel 'god', didn't wipe batterystats.bin in his life before. however i always flash things on a full charge just in case
well when you calibrate the battery you only del this file.
this is a one second task
on a macbookpro the calibartion of the battery takes a long time.
so I would not really call this calibration at all.

A Laptop battery has many cells, and, once a while, they get different charges among them, that's why you have to fully discharge your laptop battery once a month, to get them all to the same amount of charge.
Since our phones have one cell in their batterys, I don't know if it's really necessary to calibrate them.

no. caliberating does have good effects. but caliberating does not mean deleting the file. it means charging full n emptying it full n charging full again...

Actually, lithium ion batteries do not need calibration. Period.
The elements its comprised of have no "cell memory" and the battery firmware is hardcoded with the knowledge of what a full charge should be. Anytime you drain your battery past normal thresholds, it just puts extra wear and tear on the cells and reduces its ability to hold a full charge. By intentionally draining the battery in one sitting, all you're doing is stressing the battery and causing the problem you're trying to correct.
Long story short: Don't calibrate; it just hurts your battery.
Now, if you had a NiMH or an older LiPoly battery, I'd say go right ahead and try to calibrate them if they aren't holding a charge. These types of batteries do have "cell memory" and can often forget what a full charge is.
This information is widely available; it's no secret and I'm not making it up. You can search for yourself or read up on it at Battery University.

Actually, capacity drops in multi-cell batteries are typically due to voltage drops in certain cells. Draining the battery won't bring them back; you're only going to hurt the capacity of the rest of the cells. The only solution is to replace the defective cells.
Placebo placebo placebo, like I have always said. And like "theanykey" said, do not let lithium ion battery go completely empty, it just reduces battery lifespan. Seriously.
calibrating a Lithium ION battery does have some effect. 9x out of 10 there is some type of protection circuit on the battery that monitors its maximum charge, lowest charge, and wear levels and static values set by the manufacture.
Often times there can be a false wear level (wherein the wear gets set too high, usually caused by disconnecting the battery from a charge at like 95% or running the battery down to below 10%) and the charging circuitry within the battery WONT charge above that level.... to circumvent that improper wear level... a full charge, then FULL drain, then full charge is needed to properly reset those values and gain you extra battery life as the battery gets charged more.

Wear level has nothing to do with usable capacity and is not accounted for during charging. It's an arbitrary number that exists solely so people will replace their batteries sooner than necessary. If I recall, its not uncommon for wear level to be calculated by charge cycles. So, by "calibrating", you may actually worsen the wear level.
Also, you do realize that lithium ion batteries never fully discharge, right? Once they do, they're dead.
If you want a technique that actually increases short-term capacity(at the expense of ruining the battery's longevity), look up bump charging.

Flyer- Fully Discharging the Battery

Hi all,
I'm rooted, S-Off and on Honeycomb with the revolutionary method with CWM and all is working great and has been for over a month now.
I'm just worried regarding the battery. I've seen snippets of info that if the battery fully discharges, i'm screwed.
can anyone please confirm that it is either OK or NOT OK to let the battery run down on the Flyer?

Yes, if Li-ion batteries are actually drained to zero voltage, they are useless. However, technically, there are safety measures both in the battery itself (safety circuit) and the device that protect the battery from complete discharge. The device will tell you that zero battery is left, and shutdown. So in most instances, you are protected.
HOWEVER, I have seen plenty of cases on Android devices (and older phones, such as Windows Mobile) where the safety measures don't always kick in properly. People will let there phone/device drain until it shuts off, then they can't get it recharged. In these cases, the voltage is still not actually zero. But if the voltage is below a certain threshold, it won't take a charge from the normal charger. Only way to bring these batteries back, is a special battery meter with a boost function. Or replace the battery. As most of us don't have access to such a meter (and might not help anyway, since the battery is not designed to be removable) you're pretty well screwed.
This doesn't happen often. But if it happens to you, yes you are screwed.
Another thing about full discharge cycles on a Li-ion battery, is that it will shorten the life of the battery in the long term.
Moral of the story, is don't drain the battery to zero intentionally or often. Some people do it to calibrate the battery meter. This is worthless, as the battery meter on phones and tablets are not accurate enough to justify running the battery until the device shuts down. Just drain to 10 or even 20%, recharge to full (leave it there a while) and repeat a couple times, if you want to calibrate the battery meter.
As for normal usage, avoid draining the battery until shutdown. Its fine if it happens accidentally once in a while, we've all done it. But don't let it happen frequently.

Double Battery Life

I will edit the post as other suggestions come in.
This is what I am doing and it works very well for me. Keeping all things equal... meaning keeping your screen brightness the same, keeping you live wallpaper if you have it you should see major improvement in battery life.
Draining a new battery to 0 and charging to 100 percent several times will help extend the battery life.
Anker 1930mah I find add 20 percent better life.
I have stock HTC 1 by 1 widgets on my home screen that allow me to easily manage wifi, mobile data, sync and airplane mode. I suggest turning off backround data and auto sync.
New Energy ROM and stock videotron kernel is the best battery life by far and it a awesome Rom.
OC_daemon comes with energy rom.. i use it to drastically reduce your cpu speeds when screen is off and even can reduce when the screen is on if you do not run a lot of widgets / high demand apps...

for the last time, lithium ions have been out for over a decade now...they do not have memory so there is no need to cycle these batteries...draining the battery and overcharging it is actually bad for lithium ions...lithium ion batteries must be in a constant state of charge and discharge to extend battery life...draining to 0 and 100 only recalibrates the accuracy of how much battery that your phone shows that is actually left in your battery. also draining the battery and overcharging lithium ions is a very bad idea and will significantly decrease the life of the battery...
the other points are absolutely true and valid and recommended

I never suggest overcharging your battery and battery memory is not the reason for a full charge and discharge.
Fully charging battery helps the phone properly read your battery and use the battery output evenly. The batteries drains at a more constant rate.. I would say it settled down.
According to Anker... to reach the best performance, full charge and discharge your new battery for 4 to 5 times.
I know you do not agree but that is my experience and that is what the maker of the battery suggest. So this should be done.

I know what you're talking about. It's an old mentality that refuses to Die form years of using Ni-Cd batteries. I have a post about this somewhere I just can't find it. search up battery university lithium ion on google. It'll tell you lots more. If this was true all companies with lithium ions would tell you to charge and discharge multiple times...but newer companies like samsung and sony don't even recommend this and they just ell you to charge until full, on many of their products with lith ion now.

Those test mean very little because in the real world those batteries have to work our phones and not a artificial charge / discharge cycle... Meaning fully charging and discharging you battery allows your phone to properly read your battery and use the battery output evenly.
I would also point out that in that article does not say that a full charge and discharge of only 4 or 5 times will reduce service life. Yes doing this habitually will...

correct...the only thing that cycling a lithium ion does it to read the battery life properly...it will not affect battery life at all, unlike older ni-cd. its a race between getting a longer battery life or a longer runtime...if you want you battery to last...then i suggest you don't charge to 100 percent and you don't let you phone die...if you want more runtime which is what everyone wants, then you have to charge to 100...but as many people notice...going from 80 to 100 takes a long time while going from lets say 20 to 80 takes the same amount of time...also battery drains very quickly from 100 to around 80 percent..
my only point was that you do not need to cycle your battery multiple times. Once time should be enough for you phone to get a good handle on your calibration...besides you can always recalibrate the readout using an app.
If I have lots of widgets, can that suck more battery, also, my network is off all day, turn it on whenever I need it, and sync is off too.

As it says, it won't affect the lifetime in any way. So not better but not worse.
Charge often. Even better wait till low batt and charge. The calibration software will average it out and it will start improving. If it is not calibrated properly the phone will show low bat quickly. I had a phone showing 1% charge for over 2 hours and not die.

[Guide]Battery Problems- Solved & Battery Saving Tips[Newbie Friendly]

I have seen lots of threads about people complaining about very poor battery life after flashing roms. Sometimes battery charges to 100% quickly and discharges very quickly.
So, these are the solutions. These solutions are IN ORDER. If the first one has no effect, then try the next one. If the second one doesn't work, then try the third one.
Now-
1) Try reflashing your ROM.
2) If reflashing your current ROM doesn't work, that probably means the ROM itself has poor battery life and you should change it. Stock ROM's have the best battery life.
3) If you are on stock ROM and still having problems, switch off your phone, take off the back cover and remove the battery. If the battery is swollen or the shaped weirdly, this means your battery is dead and almost useless. You need to buy a new one.
I recommend buying only stock batteries manufactured by Samsung because other batteries can be fake, incompatible, or just used batteries sold to you. Don't buy anything else unless you're absolutely sure of what you're doing.

2) Change your wifi sleep policy. This can be done by going to wifi settings, pressing menu button and then select advanced.
You can change your sleep policy so that your wifi sleeps when the screen is off.
3) Decrease your brightness! Your screen is responsible for most of the battery drain. Increase your brightness only when you are in bright sunlight or when you're watching videos etc.
4) Switch off GPS. Keeping it on all the time also drains a lot of battery.

6) Don't charge your phone when it's at 70%. Wait till it is between 20-30% and then charge it continuously till it reaches 100%.

10) If you use a Bluetooth headset, switch off Bluetooth whenever not in use.
11) Using setCPU profiles. This is one of the most effective ways of saving battery. You all know about overclocking, but do you know about underclocking or undervolting? Using profiles, You decrease the clock speed of your CPU when certain conditions are met. These profiles can be on the basis of time, screen off/on, battery etc. So when my screen is off, it automatically reduces the clockspeed which saves battery

I'm interested in the greenify app, the only problem is that it does not support stock gingerbread which can give the most juice. Do you have any other recommendations of similar apps?

Are you sure about these? Because I've read that phones only take how much ever charge that they need, so charging overnight isn't a problem. And i've also heard that letting the battery charge fall below 40% actually reduces the life over time.

Yes, I am sure and it is something I have verified.
Overcharging kills the battery.
I saw a video once of an evo 3d. The battery almost completely died after it was charged for 3 days
And you should always charge only when your battery is low.
This will ensure longer battery life

Normally, when the battery is fully charged, the chip that controls the charging process reduce the current exponentially to 0: this avoid the overcharging.
I think all smartphones have the charging chip control integrated (an USB cable is simply a power source, not a battery charger), so I hope we can leave the phones on charge all the night without any problem. I do that always and never had problems.
Clearing battery stats has no effect whatsoever on battery life ...

Well, if you see again, I never mentioned that clearing battery stats saves battery. It is for those people whose phone charges very quickly with big increments, which typically happens after changing ROM's.

Its just a myth mate..
And also, it's a myth that you should let ur phone charge reach 10% or get fully discharged before charging. This actually leads to decrease in the battery life over time.

This file is used to maintain, across reboots, low-level data about the kinds of operations the device and your apps are doing between battery changes. That is, it is solely used to compute the blame for battery usage shown in the "Battery Use" UI in settings.
That is, it has deeply significant things like "app X held a wake lock for 2 minutes" and "the screen was on at 60% brightness for 10 minutes."
It has no impact on the current battery level shown to you.
It has no impact on your battery life.
Deleting it is not going to do anything to make your more device more fantastic and wonderful... well, unless you have some deep hatred for seeing anything shown in the battery usage UI. And anyway, it is reset every time you unplug from power with a relatively full charge (thus why the battery usage UI data resets at that point), so this would be a much easier way to make it go away."

I am aware of what you are saying and I fully agree.
But I have never mentioned that clearing battery stats increases battery life!
Tips to increase battery life are in the 2nd post. I simply said that if you clear your battery stats, UI will show you battery which is more accurate to the actual battery level.
Why are you arguing over something I never said?

Think of your battery as a person working out and charging is like taking rest. If the person's ability is to do 100 reps yet he takes rest after only 60 reps and keeps doing that continuously, he won't be able to do 100 reps after a few weeks!
Look at the logic mate.

The only thing it does is, it wipes the history of battery consumption by each app. I am talking about the battery consumption by each app shown to you in Settings>About phone. If you clear the battery stats.bin file, the only thing that geta erased is this

This! Anything about wiping battery stats is not a myth anymore, so please stop misleading people,
Also "6) Don't charge your phone when it's at 40%. Wait till is below 10% and then charge it continuously till it reaches 100%."
Not true! Charging your battery around 50% is the most efficient way to keep lithium battery alive longer. A discharge once a month is also recommended.
