Thinking of bailing on the SGS2 for nexus - battery/ROM problems - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

--------EDIT------------
trying to troubleshoot S2 right now, if you want to help me go to my other thread:

------------------------
Been debating for a month or so whether i should buy the SGS2 with a contract for free, or import the Galaxy nexus and sell whatever phone i can make the most profit on to offset the price of the Nexus.
Well i finally decided that the SGS2 would be a better choice, and was also cheaper, so i bought it about a week ago.
I love the phone except for these two huge deal breakers:
the first is battery life when im on a AOSP rom.
Im on CM7 KANG from 11-29. Battery life is pretty awful. When im home its decent about 3% standby drain per hour. I was at school where the service isnt that great and this is what happened:

I dont see how anyone is getting decent battery life from this ROM.
Personally, one of my favorite things about android is being able to run different kinds of roms, particularly CM and MIUI. I really feel that if thats what you like then this is the wrong phone for it.
I have no doubt that i wouldnt be having these issues with a nexus phone. So im starting to come to the conclusion that maybe i should sell it, and import the SGS2, or try to get the nexus S for cheap, and then wait until the price drops a bit.

Do whatever you feel is right for you.

It took me about a week to identify and tune my gs2. I wasn't getting more than 14 to 16 hours before. I'm getting 24+ now.

Should i try out that kernel with cm7?
i have no doubts that other roms will have good battery life, (the ones designed for i777) but i get awful life when using cm7 and other aosp roms. This is my biggest problem.
And I'm getting better battery today than the other day. I'm down to 75% after 7 hours. But this is with minimal use and full service, and connected to wifi.

I get 20+ hours easily with MIUI. When I first got the phone I was getting about 12 hours. Took me a while to tune it.

Please explain your "tuning"
Are you changing voltages? Apps? Breaking the battery in? Etc? This would help

No voltage changes. Removed widgets that were causing some battery strain, switched email from push to poll, prevented some stuff from auto starting, froze some system stuff with Titanium Backup. I tested the drain last night, went to bed with 100%, woke up 6 hours later with 99%.

As far as 'tuning' to stop apps from starting I give a huge +1 for autostarts! Can't remember who recommended it first on this forum but noticeably added to my battery. I have at least 150 apps on my phone and there was a good number set to start 'after boot'.
Not too often does one change make a difference you can feel. I can't really give a number as I've just set it up yesterday and usually go through a full charge with an extended battery, 9+ screen on hours in one day, kinda sad when I think about it. It'll take a few more days before I can really tell the difference it's making. But it 'seemed' like it added a full hour more of screen on time yesterday. It'll blow me away if that's true. Hope the numbers repeat.
As a note I tried stopping 'camera' from auto starting and it did a hard reboot of the phone. Guess that was it's way of saying don't touch.

Similar to everyone else I had to play with my settings and apps. I would also recommend checking out the thread on known apps that are battery hogs. I'm using CM7 with the latest Kang build and the battery life is MUCH improved. Running siyah 2.3 kernal oc'd 200-1600 ondemand. Try turning down the screen brightness some or put it on auto if you haven't. Also, I may be wrong but I bet the battery does get conditioned after a few drain/charge cycles and improves.

Im coming from a captivate with a similar steup, so ive got everything almost down to a science.
Brightness has been another gripe ive had with this device. Auto brightness is way too low, and is also unresponsive. Auto on both my phones side by side shows the flaws (IMO) of the SGS2. When its dark, both are the same, when i shine light on it, the captivate reacts accordingly. As a result, I keep the phone at half brightness.
Ive had battery problems with both phones when running AOSP roms. My captivate would last for 36-48hours with minimal use on a captivate based rom, and then 10-14 hours on CM.

15 hrs. mostly in standby with some light web surfing and constant txt messaging. running at 200mhz-1200mhz on conservative with entropy's DD 12/01/11 release battery is at 72%

Not to mention you cant possibly believe you are going to get a brand new phone that already has similar battery life or maybe a little worse to this phone and flash brand new roms on it and get better battery life. I dont believe the cards are going to fall in your favor. Although the Nexus is a nice phone and would be pretty sweet to own...if battery issues like this are your reason for jumping ship....it may be a long swim to shore.

How bad really is the battery?

So i want to port to verizon and get a 4g phone to lock in my unlimited data, but the horror stories of bad battery life are scaring me!
realistically, can you get through one day of moderate use without charging?
I just got mine, and am trying to train the battery and prune services to get maximum run time.
My first day with it, I ran Pandora in the car, plus Google Nav, plus LTE web browsing, etc. I got 4.5 hours full charge to shutdown.
I am still cycling the battery, and I used Juice Defender free for a few days. Now I am playing with Green Power Free, which I use on my froYo tablet. I can get around 8 hours off charger, now, on the OEM battery.
I want to keep the slim(-ish) profile, so i don't want the extended battery with back. But, I will probably experiment with the fleabay batteries and see what I can get.
Battery is a huge suck factor with the TBolt. But, no worse than the Evo 4G that I also ran for a month. And, for me, the speeds and coverage are better with LTE than wiMax.
I have a feeling that I will be shuffling the phone from charger at home to charger in car to charger at office. I hope that the USB port doesn't break....
I get around 14 hours a charge with light-moderate usage. If I don't use my phone at all it'll last a couple days. If I'm streaming lots of music, browsing the web, and making calls I get 6 hours at most.
It doesn't bother me because I am always somewhere I can charge if need be.
The battery life on the Thunderbolt does leave a little to be desired. That being said, if you want the fastest download and upload speeds than this is your phone. By rooting, you can use different kernels and profiles that CAN extend the battery but that is only a band-aid. I just posted this in another thread two seconds ago but ill post it here as well.

my post has nothing to with this thread, but dude..........you signature....HILARIOUS!!!!!!
I get 4-6 hours per battery on my thunderbolt. Screw trying to ooze every bit of battery life out of it. That's not why I bought it. 4g and bluetooth are always on and I use location services and push emails. Twitter and rss feeds autoupdate.
I bought this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004Y6E5Z2
and it works great to charge all batteries. The extra batteries work pretty good, but the phone gets a little confused so I don't go below about 15-20% because sometimes it just shuts down. I think that is the battery software not being able to read the different batteries. The charger can charge one battery before my phone dies so I just switch as needed.
hmm, not exactly what i was hoping to hear. honestly i don't need a 4g phone now, but i want to grandfather in unlimited 4g before verizon takes that option away.
how good can the battery life get if you undervolt, turn off 4g when you're not web browsing, and buy the biggest battery that isn't obnoxiously large? how does the thunderbolt compare to the revolution or charge?

I usually get 5 hrs or so in a 4G area. A whole day roughly 10 hrs in a 3G area.
I just got my thunderbolt a few days ago and I've been stuck spending time next to a charger all the time so far but its worth the speeds!

Battery blows and something is draining the crap out of it even when sleeping. I'm gonna start analyzing with system panel soon to find the problem.
On a rom that has a toggle or using the lte on off app, you can toggle down to cdma/evdo unless you need to do something data intensive. Leaving lte on all the time isn't nessesary. Using aosp and stock battery, I easily make it through the day. I have the extended one though if I feel like it. Too heavy imo. Plus I look retarded when only I have the huge battery around 10 friends with super thin iphone 4's.

It's difficult to say whether one makes it through the day with moderate use since everyone's definition of moderate use is different. I'm rooted with das BAMF remix 1.8, stock kernel and settings, and after about 100 txt messages, half hour's worth of calls, 30 min. or so of gaming, and 30 min to hour of web browsing, all over 15 hours, my phone was at 68% at the end of the day. That's moderate usage for me, but most or some might call that light usage though. Oh and LTE on the entire time, but Wifi used for about 4 of those 15 hours.
my battery life is absolutely outstanding on this phone, even with 4g on all the time. maybe i just lucked out with a good phone?
I'm pretty sure the Revolution isn't that great on battery either and it's got 1 debloated ROM and BING! ewwww Granted the ROM out for it removes Bing but still. Also the Charge sucks down battery faster than the TBolt in my experience. If you get the extended battery like mentioned it lasts a pretty long time. I got it and thought I'd return it because of the size but it's really not that bad. It's definitely worth it to have the speeds and the dev support on this device! Plus it's not a Samsung and it doesn't come preloaded with Bing!!!

Battery shouldnt be a problem with moderate use. If your a heavy user just invest in an extra battery or two. or get the extended battery.

For those having faster then normal battery drain in ICS

My Battery was draining so dang fast.. 6 hours and it was dead... I looked in the usage and noticed that it was 40% Screen.. A quick look reveled that the rom defaults to full brightness with auto brightness off.. I turned it on.. put in my extra battery and it seems to be doing much much better with the screen only using about 15% now..
Just wanted to throw that out there for those that are having issues with their battery drain.

I will fully test it today when I am at school. What I noticed so far was when I was at 20%, the low battery message popped up and said there was 14% or less battery.
battery life is awful. reporting says over 90% of my battery use is from the screen which is set to ~25% and im getting ~8 hours on a charge. i have noticed the backlight appears to be alot brighter as the typical light bleed looks a lot worse than when i was on gb
I've just switched over to the Amaze and have noticed a precipitous battery drain as well, the main culprit being the screen according to the "battery use" stats. Suffice it to day, I'm quite disappointed.
I'm rooted, S-off, super ID, running Energy ROM.

If you're running Energy Rom, it's based on the first leak (The old one). Many people were reporting bad battery life and phone overheating on the first leak.
My battery life is much better on any of the 2nd leak/official based roms.

I've been testing for RMS all day, I was running Iced bullet. Over on Android-dev.
If you want the stock feel, try fastamaze v2.1 It's based on the latest.
Miked (arhd) is rebasing his rom also, not sure when he's going to be done, I heard he was having some problems.
According to Google engineer battery stats hold only statistics about apps and parts that use battery and system resets these once phone is charged.
For me completely discharging, power up again until battery was 0 and then charging overnight helped a bit.
Screens below, the display is mostly browser. I just left screen on for 10min and the battery didn't drain at all. You need to be doing something, the screen on itself does not cause much drain, just a side note.

Thus far, I have not really noticed an appreciable decrease in battery drainage, but I have noticed the standby has dramatically improved. I went to bed at 22% and woke up with the battery at 19% after 6.5 hrs.
So I've also tested out other roms (FastAmaze, Iced Bullet, SpeedRom) and the drain rate seems to be the same as Energy Rom. CapRomCE may have performed slightly better than Energy, but not enough to make me switch.
I haz a sad now.

Maybe its not the Rom..maybe its your battery.
Batteries have came from the factory defective. It sucks but it does happen. I have no complaints about up time with this phone.
I'm running stock official ics .3 debloated.. no other tweaks except a theme. Getting a good 10-16hrs depending on use. Data on all the time unless the system shuts it off. I don't use a CPU tuner...just try to re-condition your battery and you should get better results....unless you're a heavy user.

So after a day of using the battery, it has been noticeably better. However, the discharge rate is all wonky. I don't really care about that as long as the battery life lasts.

Bad Battery?

Where is everyone getting that the DNA has bad battery. From my heavy usage I'm getting well over a days worth (20hrs) with moderate usage (1.5 hours calls, 2 hours screen time, 1 hour music and Pandora ) and screen on auto brightness always 4g. I'm stuck unrooted on the OTA and I've disabled a lot of apps so that may be why. This is way better then any stock device I've owned? Granted its not note 2 or razr max numbers but I can tell you working with people that have other Verizon phones in the hospital I work at get far less with just light to moderate usage. Has anyone whose rooted attested to better battery life (bc that's one of my primary reasons to root)?

in my opinion it is a good battery...screen takes up a bunch of battery...maybe try lowering your brightness when you aren't outside if you want more...auto isn't always perfect.. and a new kernel would probably improve only some battery life because the screen takes the same amount of juice on any kernel and thats a big factor in battery life. a new kernel could solve wake lock issues, extending you batter life when your phone isn't being used. the cpu usage and governor could change improving the battery a bit. the cpu could also get less stress when the kernel is optimized. i'm going to make a guess and say with your usage it won't be a major improvement to battery with new kernel, maybe 1-3 hours? (just a guess)
i'm rooting to get CM 10.1 and a good kernel for s2w and battery/performance improvement... i'd suggest rooting and installing a rom and kernel even if its just another sense rom just for smoothness's sake. stock lags a bit...especially with keyboard.

Battery life on my DNA is great. No complaints. I don't see where the complaints come from either. Definitely has better battery life than a 4S or any other phone I've owned previously.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
i think the complains came from some wake locks which basically stopped your phone from going to deep sleep. thus, instead of using 1% over hour of no screen time, it might use something like 3 or 5%...this can drain the battery quickly...you can go to your battery and look at whats taking up battery and it won't say anything like msm_wake_lock_blah_blah...so the whole battery issue seems to have been somewhat resolved? (the wake lock issue has been resolved)
I just got my second line with a DNA two days ago, and after charging it all night on my wireless charger, this is where my battery stats currently sit. I can't complain, I've been using it all day and its done wonderfully. Compared to my Note II it's not there yet in the battery department, but nothing much really is. But for a damn nice smart phone, the DNA is a great choice.

Also used for listening to music (about an hour) and about half an hour on GPS with screen off.

in my opinion it is a good battery...screen takes up a bunch of battery...maybe try lowering your brightness when you aren't outside if you want more...auto isn't always perfect.. and a new kernel would probably improve only some battery life because the screen takes the same amount of juice on any kernel and thats a big factor in battery life. a new kernel could solve wake lock issues, extending you batter life when your phone isn't being used. the cpu usage and governor could change improving the battery a bit. the cpu could also get less stress when the kernel is optimized. i'm going to make a guess and say with your usage it won't be a major improvement to battery with new kernel, maybe 1-3 hours? (just a guess)
i'm rooting to get CM 10.1 and a good kernel for s2w and battery/performance improvement... i'd suggest rooting and installing a rom and kernel even if its just another sense rom just for smoothness's sake. stock lags a bit...especially with keyboard.

Cm10 is not yet stable/working enough and that uses its own kernel anyway. Better off with viper 1.13 and custom kernel because 2.04 roms can't have custom kernel s.

There is a very small percentage of users who need a battery bigger than what's in the DNA to last them a day. It's easier to sell a phone on how thin it is than on the fact that the battery will last a day and a half.

hmm...i see but i mean there is still a big market for a powerful phone with long lasting battery...like a bunch of people i know, like my parents, don't really care much more on having a battery that last them all day cause they are on the phone a lot...like at work and such... i know i'd buy a phone like that... ah well, i'll be fine for now but batteries need to improve... and soon... i think it'll be fine... new phones like S4 has a long lasting battery and the S3, which sold a lot, had a longer battery than the DNA and iPhone...
I was surprised by the DNA's battery for everything all the review people said so the other phones probably have an even better battery...but thank you. good point

The general consensous is that the DNA has slightly better battery life than the s3. The DNA gets 4-5 hours of screen on time for mist users. And easily lasts a day.

better battery? what do you mean? source?
as far as i know the s3 has a better battery life because of the bigger battery compared to small screen. for example, this video http://goo.gl/Gvh6i
Look the DNA will last a full day with heavy use especially for the lucky ****s that got a 1.** device and are rooted. Try that with a GNex

Most comparison reviews state that the DNA gets better battery life, and mist posts on here say the same. And yes, the DNA has a marginally smaller battery and bigger screen, but has a far more efficient processor and screen, which saves battery.

i don't think this impacts your kernel. Kernels modify how the hardware talks with the phone. This app is the contrary, it impacts how the software talk to the phone. I think its worth a try either way
In any case, i installed the app earlier, it takes about 2 days to learn my behavior, i will see how it work in a couple of days and i'll report back. Usually, i can get a full day of light to moderate use and still have 30 - 40 % when i get home. we'll see with this app

i think hes talking about fauxclock and fauxsound. I wouldnt pay for that, but i do trust the developper as hes been the best kernel maker since the S2
mine just got out of learning mode...will check back in 48 hours with some stats
this is why you pay for a kernel tweaker ,and thats overclocked to 2.1 and screen time of 2 hours and talk time of about 1 and half hours and still have 22 percent to go that will take me over 24 hours, ohh and i just started using battery guru yesterday still in learning mode
Interesting app, installed it and will test it over the next few days.
This should have come integrated with all factory roms, instead of gimiky junk.

tbh 24 hours with 2 hours screen on is not that good. If i dont use wifi, just LTE every day i get 24-30 hours with about 2.5 hours screen on thats OC'ed just a tad. Now using wifi as much as i can i can get 5-6 hours screen on same time frame...

While I completely agree with you that it should have come pre-installed, there's also the chance that this, too, is a gimmicky app! I've got 4 hours left in "learning mode," so we'll see.... I'm already getting incredible battery life, so I don't have much to complain about!

F you for seeing the point in supporting devs. I spent 7hrs straight last night debugging my aospa build - all for free - no charge to you. Thanks.
well, very interesting results. I've been out of learning mode for about 2 days, and i have to say i really see a considerable difference. First, i would just like to point out i'm not a HEAVY user, more moderate to light. I'm an insurance broker, i'm on the phone from 9am to 5pm about 80% of the day (on land line), so my screen time is about 1.5 hour at 5pm, i mostly check social networks, emails, tapatalk, some youtube vids during breaks, my apps update automatically during the day. On a good day, i come home with 40%, on a day of heavy usage, about 20%, i'm always on lte tho. I also never disable wifi, bt, gps and most other features.
Today has really been the determining day because its the first day the counter was on. When i came home today, i had 1h17 mins of screen time and.................................68% left!!!! Then from about 6pm to about 30 minutes before bedtime bedtime and adding an another 30 mins of screen time (1:00am EST) i lost an extra 15% to bring me down to 53% just before i plugged it for the night. Thats a HUGE improvement. The great thing about this is that all day, i received all my FB notification instantly, all my emails and other stuff. I have not seen any cut in functionality.
So this phone was unplugged at 7am this morning, and in 17 hours, with just under 2 hours of screentime, and light to moderate use, i lost in total, 47% of juice and i didn't notice giving up any functionality.
I have to say i'm impressed. I hope this was not just a really good day, and that this app actually was the reason for the improvement.
myn came out of learning yesterday i am using fauxs kernel too but this is light usage but still this is great,14 hours and still at 78 percent wow
Mine came out of leaning about 10pm last night. I noticed using power saving mode helped a lot without sacrificing normal performance just using apps and checking messages and stuff. Standby with batteryguru my idle almost flat line which helps a lot. Usage with power saving on and off with battery guru was almost the same. Battery just seemed to stretch. Automatic brightness also seems to work better. Before battery guru kicked in auto brightness was all over the place or did not work very well, more of not working well. Now auto brightness is fairly consistent though the delay us often 1-5 seconds. Still much better than before. It also seemed to get better battery life with my at&t sim rather than T-Mobile. I think part of it is T-Mobile bloatware running in the background and probably the better reception. But in tmobile's defense I do have to say I am impressed with the network. I am seriously considering switching to T-Mobile now. Their dc hspa+ and lte were both fairly consistent at ~10mbps with low latency. Also am getting much better signal at my apartment. At work is a mixed bag though. Hard pulling signal in the reception challenged places where in would get a signal with atnt. At&t lte though is much faster. Hardly dipped below 10megs and often got 20-30mb/s. I am going to return my gs4 though and see what the Google edition brings. I have some issues with mine that I can't isolate to hardware or software any further unless I root and I won't do that becuae I haven't committed to the phone yet. Also have a two tone screen. One side is darker than the other. Was not a big deal until I started noticing how bad the black crush was on the darker/left side and loss of details in videos. I was not actively looking for this loss of clarity either. After extensive display testing now I can't shake the obvious disparity and hope i get abetter screen if I get a Google gs4. Anyways, went off topic, but battery guru is the real deal. Very noticeable.improvement in battery and phone got less hot and took longer to get to a borderline warmth level. Definitely worth looking into this app to improve battery. With the right tweaks, root access and optimizing some of the apps for black background (why the hell samsung went back to white backgrounds like email have no clue) this phone could probably get 6h in a heavy day of usage easily, provided no GPU intensive apps/games are played.

Just some stats since downloading this app and it being out of learning mode and I'm amazed.. I normally get about 12-14 hours no charge with about 30% left.. Although I did put this on the charger for about 20 minutes last night the last full charge was 4pm yesterday and I'm just now putting it on the charger at 12pm today.. Now one problem is it learns how you use your phone and adjusts to your usage, that said, I work from 430pm to 430am Monday thru Thursday and 430 till 2am at the latest on Fridays so my phone isn't on Wi-Fi in those hours so when I got off work early last night this app automatically had my Wi-Fi off cause the 2 day learning period was during the week. So I didn't realize it and did some heavy browsing. But overall this app is amazing and a must have..

[Q] Battery Life Expectancy?

I really hate to be that guy asking stupid battery questions, because we all know that battery stamina is subjective, but this is really hard for me to understand.
I am coming from the Note 3. My general weekday use with the Note 3 would get me 14-15 hours off the charger with 50% left by quitting time. I bluetooth stream music/podcasts for 8-9 hours a day. Pandora for maybe a couple hours on some days and average screen on time of 1.5 hours. I never had to do anything special in regards to battery life. Auto brightness and just regular use and it always lasted the day easy.
Today was my 2nd day with the HTC One Max and I managed to get just over 10 hours off the charger before it was completely depleted and shut off and it died in the middle of a work shift. Normal use for me, auto brightness, maybe 1-1.5 hours screen on time (estimation). Very depressing.
Battery use in settings looked pretty normal to me although I'm not seeing a place for actual screen on time? But my question is this, is this the kind of battery life you guys are seeing? Will it get better after a couple cycles? Based on the reviews I had read before purchasing the One Max, it was stated that the Max battery out lasted the Note 3 battery in testing so I wasn't even the least bit worried about it when making my purchase.
Not sure what my issue is but I won't be able to keep this device if I can't figure this out.

I hadn't really had time to set anything up like I usually would. The only 2 apps I had installed were Pandora and PlayerPro but I'm more than happy to wipe and start from scratch. I've downloaded everything I need for S-OFF, recovery, ROMs etc, I was just waiting to make sure everything else was in order before I start tinkering. Just curious, are either of you guys running a custom ROM?

You don't need a custom ROM, this phone is perfect out of the box. Check with better battery stats what exactly is causing the issue. Could be Google play services.

This is the kind of usage I am seeing. Very light usage today, maybe an hour of bluetooth music and 0 phone calls, several texts (12-15). Not sure what this means in the overall picture. I also installed BBS but not sure what I am looking for, I just know my stamina is weak sauce. :crying: I'm not sure I understand why Android system is using 75% of my battery and only has 4 minutes CPU, 24 minutes keep awake and 4mb data sent.
This is what I'm getting. I have the power flip case, but it only adds 1/3rd more battery..

There is definitely something wrong there. based on your shot, it looks like a verizon phone that doesnt have the power save.
Mines an international version my girlfriend got for me, Not rooted, S-On, completely stock out of the box, and this is my stats, mines based on moderate to heavy usage: (Note: the battery power saver turns on at 14% by itself) And my battery charges in 2 hours to 100%.

I haven't been able to figure it out yet. Most days its fine. Like Friday I listened to 4 hours straight of Pandora just because I wanted to see what would happen. Like usually I would stop it if I had to run errands or when I talk to people but I let it go for 4 solid hours. After bluetooth streaming 4 hours of Pandora and about 2 hours saved podcasts and 9:51 off the charger I still had 63% battery left. Thats really great results IMO. If I can get through and entire workday with 50% battery left I am thrilled. I think it was 1:13 screen on time or close. Not a lot of screen on time but that is a lot of Pandora use and that usually hits my battery the hardest.
But Tuesday earlier in the week I didn't listen to Pandora/Slacker at all, a little less than 2 hours bluetooth podcast, less than 2 hours screen on time and hit 38% by quitting time (about 10 hours off the charger). Every now and then there is a day like that where the battery just disappears even with super light use. I have GSAM installed and am trying to keep an eye on use but I always forget and plug it in when I get home (on days like Tuesday) or I plug it into the PC at some point to transfer files or photos and that reset the stats.
I tried that Snapdragon battery Guru and was really excited. The first day after it finished "learning" my routine I got through the whole day with 77% left but all day long I would stop getting texts and Gmails and the data connection would no longer work if I tried to open Facebook or Chrome. I would check status and mobile data is on, connected to the network, good signal but I couldn't get any data to work until I toggled airplane mode or rebooted the phone. SO I finally got frustrated with it, reset defaults and uninstalled it.
One thing I do notice is that I usually use 10-12% of my battery to wifi while I'm at work and the only wifi I use is when I am at home. If I turn the wifi off while I am at work I forget to turn it back on when I get home and now that I no longer have unlimited data that is a pretty big problem. I need to set an alarm or something that reminds me to turn it on/off everyday I guess.
