[Q] How to flash from CM7 to unnamed, and others - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Coming from captivate, i used to have to one-click back to stock before i could do anything. Do i have to do the same here when going from a AOSP rom to a i777 rom?
FYI whenever i flash I ALWAYS wipe data/cache/dalvik cache (and sometimes battery stats)
Also does any kernel for the i777 work on any rom?

I don't and haven't run into a single problem yet. It takes the long process out of it like we used to have to do on the captivate. uber nice

this phone has different system so you flash from cm7 to a samsung with no issues.

As the above said it is not an issue like we had on the Cappy's. If you made a nandroid backup of any rom you were on (ie: stock rom) then just go to cwm, wipe data/factory reset, then install your nandroid backup. Much easier now. Samsung got smart and changed the partitions so CM7 doesn't have to use mtd partition any longer. So no problem switching back and forth.

This might seem like a dumb question, but I'm new to this (just flashed UnNamed yesterday). I'd like to try other ROMs too, so all I would need to do is download the .zip file for the ROM, put it on my sd root (like I did UnNamed), go to CWM, do a wipe data/factory reset, then proceed to install the new ROM the same way I installed UnNamed (from CWM)?
If that's correct, that sounds easy enough to switch back and forth.

Indeed. Just be sure to do a backup in cwm in case there are issues with the new rom.

Yes. It is that easy. Like above commented on go into cwm recovery, choose backup and restore, choose backup, then it will create a backup of EVERYTHING, your rom, settings, apps, and everything else. So if you don't like the new rom or have an issue with the new rom and want to go back it is as easy as going back to cwm, backup and restore, choose restore, then choose whatever backed up rom/date you want to restore. MAKE SURE TO WIPE DATA/FACTORY RESET BEFORE RESTORING A NANDROID BACKUP.

Custom Recovery/Custom Rom Noob question

Ok so as I'm still new to this and currently have a rooted Aria, with clockwork mod recovery and attn1's liberated rom, I'm kind of confused as to what would happen if I wanted to try a new custom rom. I know I would need to backup first with nandroid but is that just in case I need an emergency recovery or does that recover apps and data etc? I know then you would need to wipe, does that also wipe my clockwork mod recovery as in I would have to flash that again? After I install my new custom rom, how do I restore previous apps/settings? Thanks for your patience
Your ROM and where clockwork recovery are seperate so even if you had to wipe your phone clockwork will still be in place.
And from my limited understanding, flashing a ROM shouldn't affect your data, otherwise you would have lost everything when you flashed attn1's ROM

Well if you flash a new ROM, most of the time you have to wipe before you flash; you do lose your information this way, but its to make sure you install the ROM without difficulties.

So how can you backup/restore your info when you have to wipe? Whats the easiest method?
Either use titanium backup to separately backup info or use nandroid backup and advanced restore the data partition but note that the advanced restore doesn't work with every combination of roms

I'm pretty sure attn1's ROM was an exception to that because it was the standard HTC Sense ROM without the AT&T bloatware. If you tried to install the Intruder 2.1 I'm almost positive you would have to wipe and lose everything before upgrading.
Sorry, I'm a noob here, and might not know what the heck I'm talking about.
After flashing a rom\keypad\kernel, and i see that it is working properly, do I need to leave it on the root of my sd card anymore or can I delete it? I am working with a 8gb card and it seems to be filling up fast.

You can delete them. It is 100% completely safe to delete all of them after flashing them. But if its something you really like (like a special kernel, favorite rom, etc.) you may want to keep a backup somewhere (e.g on your pc).

Just wipe and flash CM7 or your CM7 nandroid backup.
Easy to go back and forth between any ROM's. I have 4 different ROM's backed up that I go back and forth between.
it' svery easy. In recovery you have to wipe system, cache and dlavik and then you have to flash new rom from zip file
I suggest a full fast boot wipe , just be in the safe side
You could use the fast boot script found in the dev section to fully wipe
I found it useful when switching from cm7, motor blur and cm9
Also keep in mind you could lose the pds config between flashes
I
=)
Right... thanks !!
I always do a nandroid right before updating, if I don't like the rom or something goes wrong I can revert to my last rom from cwm.

[Q] Brother and Sister please HELP! :(

i was using Saurom ROM at 1st and it worked perfectly for my galaxy note i717(this was my 1st attempt to root my phone and install a new rom), and i saw a better ics rom ("Onlyone" ics rom) at rootmygalaxynote.com, i flashed the new ics rom into my phone and it stuck at the samsung logo. i tried to re-install the ics rom again and same thing happened. So, i go back to re-install my old Saurom ROM. But when the phone get into the main screen, it is extremely laggy and eventually freeze, most of the cases, the phone reboot itself. i m so scare that the phone is not able to read any rom now. and i am new to smart phone, can any Brother and Sister in this Forum can me get through this? i m so depress
Your issue is you forgot to wipe. No not that kind of wipe. LOL. Go into recovery (CWM) and do a "wipe data/factory reset". Then install the OnlyOne ROM again.
I responded to this thread that you duplicately created in the general section. Fyi don't create two threads in different sections anymore

when i got the cwm recovery, the 1st thing i did was wipe all data and factory reset, and then i also wipe "cashe"<---wrong spelling probably. and then i went install the rom. anything that i have missed? is there any possible data corruption during the download of the OnlyOne ROM?
Data corruption is possible. You may have also downloaded an older version. Download the ROM again from this forum in the Dev section. There is a thread for it. Do your wipes again first. Then install it again. Let it settle before restoring anything. ROM performs well.
Hey
Just remember that when flashing onlyone rom it's sit on the samsung logo for a while its ok for fist time instal of rom as long as samsung logo is flashing ur fine good luck

ICS Roms won't boot after falshing JellyBean???

I flashed an AOKP Jellybean Rom, just wanting to test it out. After trying another JB Rom, I decided to go back to something more stable. With the release of the Stable CM9 ICS Rom, I figured this was the perfect time to go back.
I factory reset/wiped cache etc, and flashed it. The phone reboots into clockwork mod. Battery pull. Same thing. I then try an ICS Rom I was running for almost a month without issue and the same happend - won't boot.
I then flashed the JB Rom again and it worked like a charm.
Has anyone else experienced this?
does anyone know the solution to get back to an earlier version of android?
Just make nandroid backup if you're not sure you want to keep the rom you're about to flash Restore nandroid if you didn't like the new rom. I use exactly this to go back to stock rom if ever needed. My stock nandroid backup incl. EFS backup is stored safely on different locations just in case
Boot recovery (Hold power, volume up & home), go to "mounts and storage", erase cache, system, data. Go back, go to "advanced", erase dalvic cache. Then flash a new ROM.

I tried all of the listed suggestions above, and none worked.
But, I finally got it working. For anyone else that runs into this issue in the future:
Perform a restore(doesn't matter how old), do NOT wipe anything, just flash a new rom over it.
Boot. Reboot back into Recovery. Wipe everything and then Flash the desired rom.
Not sure what this fixed, but it did.
Thanks to all for the suggestions!

[Q] Flashing a ROM for the first time, but need to keep data settings

I'm trying to flash the Santod Stock ICS, debloated, deodexed ROM onto my phone.
I'm coming from Stock GB, and I have already got S-OFF and Root with the HTC Thunderbolt All-in-one-tool.
However, I am currently confused and stuck on what to do next. The catch is that I dont get my service through Verizon, but through Mobi PCS in Hawaii which basically just offers 3G and this required me to pay someone locally to hack the phone and input manually the data settings.
Now, I notice that in the instructions for flashing this ROM is to totally wipe the partitions. Is this really necessary? Only asking because I don't want to lose the data settings and possibly have the phone not be able to have service or have to pay for the settings to be put back on.
I have already created a backup through 4ext, so I think I should be fine with that part. Is there a way for me to back up the data portion of the phone, wipe the partitions, and restore it after I flash the ROM? Besides all that, which radio should I flash first before the ROM?
I would really appreciate some help if anyone has the time.
Thanks
Since you made a nand backup in 4ext you should be OK to do a full wipe (yes you have to full wipe, data, cache and system). If something is wrong then restore your backup and you should be OK. The problem I see you having is that you will have to flash the new radios in order to flash ICS. I'm pretty sure that will mess up any settings you have for the modem which means you would have to get your phone flashed to that service again.

Got it. So the wipe is basically a full wipe? does my SD card need to be wiped too?

Nah you don't have to wipe the SD. Also, since you have to do a full wipe you can use an app called titanium backup to back up user apps and data. Make sure you don't restore system apps from gingerbread into ICS.
