Should I buy this phone? - HTC EVO 3D

Alright, so I saw that SingTel has only a few smartphones available for now and I would like to ask if I should go for this phone. Obviously its cheaper than the Galaxy S II and should be umder my budget. My question is:
Will it be worth it to buy even in next year April. Cos I'm not sure of what is going to be developed on the phone and what are the things that would bbe developed on this phone for (like MIUI ICS and ICS based ROMs or even ICS Update)

Unless I am seriously stupid (high probability) your statement about when you are planning to buy it was ambiguous, and needs clarity. So you are asking if you should buy now, or would it still be worth buying in April?
The evo 3D has good hardware, it is no longer bleeding edge or cutting edge in terms of its hardware or performance but currently is still very much a device that has good performance and value for its price.
Now, in April if the reason you are asking if it is still worth buying because you have some partial or full discount upgrade and want to know if it is still worth buying in comparison to the current or future device releases before or around April, then I am going to suggest differently. I have not read or searched for any up coming devices, but without looking I think I could accurately say with confidence that there will be a device released before or around April that has better performance than the evo 3D, and also would come stock with ICS. If that is the case that ends up being true then I recommend you wait for one of those devices. Just my opinion of course

I'm confused on the same thing! (So either we both are stupid or it really doesn't make any sense) I would pick HTC over Samsung because I'm not a fan of the AMOLED screens. The vividness of them is nice, but almost seems too fake to me. Defiantly not better then the qHD and HD screens. And if you compare the communities, I think we here in the EVO 3D community have a good strong bond and a lot to offer. If your looking for a phone now, I'd go with the EVO 3D, if your going to wait till April, then id hold off.

Whoops sorry. My english standard is too low to understand I guess
I don't want to have anything a very high specs since I don't really require as much juice as 1.5Ghz, and just wanted to know if by April 2012 the phone would get the ICS Update from HTC, if so I would go ahead and get it as the top priority now for considering to buy a phone is whether or not the phone would be getting the ICS Update.

That's ok, I understand English as a second language must be difficult. Thanks for trying either way! I have not read any reports on whether or not it will get ICS officially or not, but it will definitely get ICS as a custom ROM before then. I believe the drivers for the evo 3D are being released at the end of December (this is what is currently holding back its development for the 3D). If you are willing to root and flash a custom ROM then I would say yes ICS is coming before April.

So...who's getting the SGSII?

As a Fascinate user, was planning on getting the Bionic as I was at first disapointed with Samsung's lack of support, issues, etc. But the screen, codecs, weight, and such all won me over, and I can't wait to get the SGSII. Hopefully its coming to Verizon with an Exynos processor and Mali GPU.....
How bout everyone else?

I think most of the people who have posted on SII subforum will be getting it.
Though if its delayed some might switch to a phone thats already out or wait and see what the iPhone5 brings to the table (which i will be doing if it doesnt come out this month or early May.

I am still not sure{using N1 for close to 14months now},will decide depending on how well HTC Sensation turns out{announcement might come on 12th April}
LG Optimus 2X{already available here & is surprisingly cheaper than SE Xperia Arc & Xperia Play} vs SGS 2 vs HTC Sensation will be my choices.But right now my first preference will be HTC Sensation{aka HTC Pyramid}
I can upgrade any time I want to, so I can't wait to buy it when it comes out! I was a bit disappointed with the Tegra2, so right now is a good time to see the other dual cores coming out.
Oh, and the fact that Galaxy phones are made in Korea makes me swell with pride, so that's another factor in buying the SGSII.

I was an early adopter for the original SGS and got slightly burnt by the annoying lag with Samsung's official ROM. Luckily there are some great people on XDA and a lot of effort has gone into creating a much better custom ROM.
Although everything about the SGS2 sounds great, I think I'll hang back by a month or two until I've ready the initial reviews and customer experiences (hopefully benefit from a reduced price from the original launch price).
I'm definitely getting one, to replace a rather old Sanyo SCP-8400. I've had the SGS2 on pre-order since March 18...
I've also preordered mine on Amazon.de. I trust the xda devs will come through, as they most often do.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but HTC Sensation specs aren't better than SGS2, even though it's been announced after SGS2... Where is the NFC, for example ? What's really unique in Sensation? SGS2 has some cool gyroscope functions, for example.
Ill certainly be getting this device WHEN its launched......

Planning to get AT&T S2?

Posted on another forum but was curious regarding XDA members.
are you guys planning on getting the ATT S2 come october 2nd even though the nexus prime is supposedly close? or is the S2 just not worth it at this point? no bashing (im actually contemplating on buying one myself).
I will be at the store when it opens on Oct 2. Even though we're getting it late it will still be a top 5 phone for the next year.

I plan on getting one. Even though it's already a few months old, I feel like it's one of the most "future proof" of current phones on the market right now.
Things like Exynos CPU/GPU, 1 GB ram, NFC, effectively maximum speed HSPA+... My Captivate runs quite comfortable at 1.3 GHz w/ Cyanogenmod and still beats the pants off of any stock Android device currently available in the States. That's 2+ versions of Android ahead of what it launched with (2.1 Eclair), and a 30% overclock of what the stock chip came with. By similar logic, the GS2 should last through Ice Cream Sandwich and beyond...
The Note looks awesome but if I wait for it then something better will be right around the corner, besides, been sitting on this upgrade since July

I thought the Note wasn't an actual phone. But meant to be something in between a phone and a tablet. I get why it's awesome. The display resolution.
But I'll be picking up the AT&T SGSII when it comes out. Can always sell it later when something much better is released.
I will be getting it on or close as possible to Oct. 2nd I have waited this long and learned my lesson. I WON'T be waiting for the next best phone from attention after this one, I will fork out the cash for an unbranded phone. Maybe the prime or SGS3 IN the near future

I'll be getting it on launch day for sure. I was debating on waiting for the Nexus announcement but the likelihood of at&t seeing a nexus device near launch is slim to none. I know there have been hints dropped about it launching as both cdma and gsm but there is no concrete evidence. So just going by history it will likely be a few months before at&t sees the prime.

Nexus Prime/iPhone 5 for me atm... but theres still a 10% chance that seeing the Att Attain in person could wow me into buying it but I highly doubt it. Don't like Att/Samsung giving Americans the middle finger by taking 6 months to bring it to the U.S.

Because it has potential, higher resolution is a big thing which is the only thing missing from sgs2.
Also 5.3 sounds big, but you never know it may be the sweet spot between a phone and tablet. It is definitely going to replace both my phone and tablet.
And then there is the stylus which is kind of cool to have and might come handy in lots of places.
The only thing which is disappointing is the software. I would have liked to see ICS, but they are shipping with ginger bread.

how future proof is an SGS2

Hello,
I just want some opinions on how future proof people think the sgs2 is.
The prices have dropped a bit.
but im mainly concerned over the new hardware that is coming in early 2012, as well as the galaxy nexus as an alternative..
Thanks
its one of the fastest smoothest phones available today it can support Ice Cream sandwich and who keeps a phone more than a couple of years anyway the early quad cores are coming soon so it's good for a couple of years reckon I'll get a an sgsIII when my contract runs out next august depending on specs etc

The Galaxy S II is pretty future proof, one of the reasons I bought it.
I remember one of the first reviews mentioned it as a 'plus'. Its future proof.
One of the reasons is it contains so many things, like bluetooth 3.0, DNLa, MHL (HDMI), Wifi Direct and a lot of crap of wirless options.
Second it has still one of the best dual core processors. While quad core processors might start showing up in phones in 2012, everything is still being optimized for dual core. At the end of 2012/beginning of 2013 it may be smart to buy a quad core phone. The idea is this dual core processor wil be good for at least another 1,5 year.
The screen is nice, its no HD 720p resolution but that doesnt mean our WVGA res isnt future proof.
Anyways... Ice Cream Sandwich has been officialy confirmed by Samsung. And after that, we have XDA that will put out perfect ROMs with the future Android versions.
Anyways... I would say its future proof. As long as you dont mind not having 'the latest of everytjing'. Because sooner or later better phone's will come out (that doesnt mean the S II will not be excellent anymore!)
Nothing is future proof... Better question is, what will hold its resale value.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
I think that SG2 is best you can buy at the moment and for the next 1 year it will be one of mostly wanted phones......
The only thing it lacks for future proof is an HD screen and a quad core. However, SMAOLED+ is the best looking screen technology out right now and Exynos is the fastest dual core SoC.
Basically, the SGS2 will be good for another year but after that I would consider upgrading.
Sent from my GT-I9100
I also like to think that A LOT of geeks decided to upgrade to this phone when it was released. It was hyped a lot before release, and it just said BOOM! It is now the best android mobile out there.
-Because of this this exact mobile is going to have an incredible amount of fans out there developing roms, tweaks and whatnot...
It sure will be future software wise, and if you really think about what the hardware specs are good for - I don't think you will disappointed in the next two years or so
Thats my opinion anyway...
This phone is like htc desire in his time, it was relased 14.5.2010 and now year and a half from then is still great phone so i think that SGS2 will be great for next year and more....

The desire users have now all run into it's limitations, mainly a huge lack of internal storage space. Only tweakers will start using a2sd+, so most people will just live with the limitations.
Android 2.2 is also one of those limitations, only tweakers will be able to upgrade to anything higher.
And physical buttons that lose functionality as well, not to mention the crappy camera!
So, it's not about what Mr. XDA can do with the phone, it will be whatever Joe/Jane average will be able to do with it 12-18 months from now compared to new smartphones what will determine the value.
I was youst saying about hardweare specs, desire had the best HW spec for his time and he last for quite some time now....
2013, sgs2 still going strong ICS is old news... JB now, lol...
Why resurrect this thread?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
its not future proof at all in fact official software updates will end after 4.2.1/4.2.2
and roms such as cyanogen mod will not upgrade to the next android version since samsung doesn't provide support
Nothing is future proof... We're always looking for and creating something new... This is a good phone, the only thing that can out do it is hardware... Android is running out of things to apply or implement into phones... They didn't even come up with a new name for 4.2.x... I look forward to see what exotic dessert they'll name the next, lol...

I thought Key Lime Pie name for the upcoming release was already known, was it not?
It's funny, digging up a thread from 2011 about how future-proof this phone is... By now, I think the time has shown that in 2011 it was quite future-proof indeed. I'd say at the moment it's still very capable device, which in the world of tech and electronics is truly amazing.

[Q] Good or Bad?

Well hello bigger forums I came from the Ace family and I have plans on buying SII. I've heard good rumours about the phone and I've seen lots of interesting roms for it too (plus it's on main forum XD)
My options are HTC One X, GNote or SII and SII is quite leading in my eyes ATM.
Last question is, what is the price of SII in the US WITHOUT the contract?
Thanks for the responses guys, hope to see you soon
S24Lyfe
it depends on whether you're looking for an unlocked phone (being able to use any network) or if you wish to purchase it outright from your current service provider.
Unlocked it's about $500-600, and prices will range depending on your carrier if you want to go for option number 2.
I personally own the S2 and I can honestly say I love this phone.
Took less than 5 minutes to root, plenty (and I mean PLENTY) of custom roms being developed for it, and the hardware itself is just great (it outperforms the iPhone 4s) - I highly recommend it.
Just my two cents.

I'll be going next week so I need to make decisions now.
SGS2 is still a good phone. I had it for just over 10 months and loved it.
Got a HOX now and love that just as much. HOX has the HD screen which is lovely. SLCD2 vs AMOLED. Amoled has better blacks and such but I like the SLCD2 as well. Whites are better and not prone to screen burns.
Hardware wise both are beasts. Dual Core vs Quad Teg 3. DC is still fast enough not enough optimising quad at the moment. With TEG3 you get the range of Nvidia games without the need for Chainfire.
Design wise HOX wins, it's sexy and sleek but the SGS2 is lighter and thinner. Both feel good in the hand.
UI wise, Sense wins for me personally, but TouchWiz is not as bad it has it's own feature set.
If you want the cheaper device go for the SGS2 as price is decent. You'll be happy with any of your choices. The Galaxy range of devices are far easier to root with their unlocked bootloaders if you want to go with custom roms and such and development is very active with HOX it will get active when more devs have it. I'd still rate the Note over the SGS2 as it's a beast, if you can handle the size then definitely get the note.
I agree, the note is excellent.

Do you expect more or less dev support then SGS2?

Do you guys think this phone will have an outstanding developer support like the SGS2 has? Will Samsung release the bootloader stuff and all the good code from the start like the SGS2?
Samsung has recently built up a good reputation with the development community, it would be foolish for them to mess that up with their new flagship device. I'll be picking one up coming from the Evo 3D which hasn't had much going on for it as far as development so I'm excited to see how things play out.

This is my same boat. I will be purchasing this device, and will be handing my MyTouch 4g Slide or HTC Doubleshot off to a family member... the phone has almost 0% development! I can only dream of a device that I will own with countless options. We don't even have a official CM7.
I miss having the option to flash pure AOSP, MIUI, CM, CM Supers, Always hated sense but it was nice to have the options that I did on other HTC devices I have owned.
Hopefully we rake in the devs. I really miss a good kernel dev as we have none really ... BUT.. to bigger and better things!

From the Samsung Vibrant...
I got burned with my Samsung Vibrant. I'm not sure if it was Samsung or T-Mobile who dropped the ball, but there were no official upgrades past Froyo. Since they never released the source to anything related to GPS, our latest AOSP/MIUI ports have horrible GPS performance and GPS-related wakelock/battery drain problems despite the best efforts of some really talented devs.
I've heard stories about HTC being either better or worse, depending on the day, but I don't have firsthand knowledge, so I'm not making my final S3 vs. OneX decision until there's a good AOSP port.

I believe that's a good point - I also think in that point it also brings up the fact that - this is
A) probably the most anticipated phone I've seen in a while.
And
B) its the worlds first major quad core beast
So this will be a huge step from dual core kernel/dev work. Just like developers had to get used to the dual core kernels when they were used to single core devices way back when.
When u bring this up I think it means more development will come for the fact that its a major stepping stone as well as those who use the SGSII right now. Do u think this is valid?

Yes. The processor will be a quite different beast in terms of kernel functionally; if Samsung goes forward with their governor we can forget about adding any if the traditional ones. Each core will be hotpluggable plus there have been reports that each core will run on its own frequency, making this an symmetrical multi CPU design. I highly doubt there's anything similar at all which could be used, so basically in terms of platform specific things, this has nothing to do with the S2. I don't even understand what most of you understand with development, for me it means low level kernel changes in how the device will function, not silly ROM development or modding.
Initially, I think it also depends on the price of the phone, Samsung have some competition right now, the One X is only $600 at Expansys. I can imagine the SIII will be $800+.
