[Q] clockwork recovery in stock recovery - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is clockwork recovery the same with clockwork mod recovery (from ROM Manager) ?
I notice some users flash their roms in clockwork recovery after performing stock recovery. I'm really confuse.
Note: I plan to root my vibrant following method A Noob guide thread and flash clockwork mod recovery in ROM Manager.

In stock recover if u have the update.zip in ur sd card just hit reinstall update. The phone will reboot. Hit it again and it will switch to clockwork recovery then u can flash the rom from there

Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids. Root before installing cwm recovery...or you could do what he said then use the cwm to browse to the folder you have the root zip in then install it.... ROM manager will replace any "update.zip" named file on your main sd directory once you "download the latest cwm recovery" what I do if I don't have the files handy and I'm playing with my phone is just download root zip , make sure cwm update.zip is on sd..."reinstall packages" as he said, then install root zip from download directory. hopefully helped, I go bye bye now.

Err stock recovery = flashing back to stock with Odin or they could be referring to the stock recovery before having **** work mod (but most likely not the latter)
All ROM manager does is allow you to select the path to your flash target before booting into recovery, I'm more hands on so... I don't use ROM manager much. latez

[Q] Atrix shows Android/Exclamation mark when booting into Recovery

I recently unlocked and rooted my Atrix but now I'm having this issue that whenever I attempt to go into recovery it'll just show an android with a triangle exclamation mark. The only time it'll allow me to enter recovery mode is right after I flash recovery via Rom Manager. If I flash it, then reboot and attempt to enter recovery it'll just display that icon. Thanks in advance!
bump, same problem!
It doesn't flash it properly I think. Try Romracer's, follow the instructions there to delete a previous cwm file. Good luck
Which/who's version of recovery are you trying to use? If your trying to install Rom Racers, you knew to make sure "install-recovery.sh" is deleted from /system/etc. first, before installing.

I use CWM on my Evo so I was trying to do that.
Works when I flash from ROM manager, and reboot from the program, but when I select Recovery from menu when holding down power+down, it gives me the "!"
So i should delete this and to the ROM Racer Version?
Use RomRacers latest. If you want install the zip file via Rom Manager to make it the Rom Managers CWM.
You can either flash the img file via fastboot, or run the CWM zip via the ROM Manager recovery. Hope this helps.

How To Install 2.3.5? Super Rookie Here

Hi guys, I have been reading all the threads regarding installing 2.3.5 and I'm very confused. I am new to Android and bought my SGS2 about a month ago.
My phone states the following:
Baseband: I9100MUGKG2
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-I9100JPKG2-CL342890
[email protected] #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.UGKG2
Now what I'm confused about is all these different versions, am I able to flash something that ends in KI3 for example?
Also how do I upgrade using a mac? I have never had to do this, since the phone came this way. I have tried to read the multiple threads here and my head is spinning.
If you guys could help me it would be greatly appreciated. Basically looking for a very dumbed down answer. Sorry if I'm bothering you guys.
BTW: I live in Toronto and would be willing to pay between 30-50 dollars if someone could help me install it. I know it's desperate lol
All rookies and beginners should read this thread first.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125282
MODS: PLEASE MAKE THAT THREAD STICKY. It is not easy for rookies to know where to begin or what to search for!
What you should do, read, read, read. Till you are confident you are not a rookie anymore. Then cross your fingers and flash.
That's what I did.
After reading should I be buying a netbook? Seems like using a mac is limited.

done
Bro, did you figure out how to update to 2.3.5?
If not I just did it myself and i could help you do it
i was on KG2 and i updated to KI3
I didnt figure it out yet. I went out and bought a netbook and am reading and re reading.
The one think I figured out is I have cf root I believe. Since it came rooted. But with the root manager I see a folder labeled cf root. So I assume that is what I have.

Are you sure your phone is rooted? If you're not 100% sure you can download a root app and see if it asksfor superuser permision, if so then you can rest assured that your phone is rooted.
You can download titanium backup from the market for example.

The phone is 100% rooted. I am now trying to install a rom and am super confused thats all.
Ok.
FOr flashing the ROM you must be able to go into clockwork recovery and flash the ROM from there. Once you have clockworkmod recovery the rest is a piece of cake.
Do you have clockworkmod (CWM) installed?
---------- Post added at 06:49 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:36 PM ----------
I didn't see before, but you said you have CF-root and so you should (if I'm no mistaken) have CWM installed. The only thing you have to do is this:
-Download the ROM you want to flash and put it somewhere in your internal SD card. It must be a .zip file so don't extract it.
-Power off your phone.
-Enter in recovery mode by clicking volume up + home + power button for a while.
-Do a wipe factory reset
-Do a clear cache partition
-Then select flash from zip file and select the zip file of the ROM. That's all
To navigate in CWM you use the volume up and down buttons, home button to select and power button to go back.

The link I gave you is a video of the procedure taken from www.galaxys2root.com.
That's about it.
Important: Before doing doing the wipe I sugest to do a backup, this can be done selecting the backup and restore option in the recovery mode, and is very easy, the backup will take a little more than 1 gb (at least that was for me) so I sugest you have enough space. The backup will be saved in the clockworkmod folder in the nternal SD card (in that folder there will appear a backup foler with your backup).
Sorry if I wasn't clear enough, ask me if you didn't understand.
IMPORTANT: Before doing the wipe verify you are in clockworkmod recovery, this should be writen somewhere up in the screen when you acces recovery mode.
I believe the 2.3.5 rom requires Odin no? If so is it just a plug it in thing

Then you do not have cf-root. It comes with clockwork mod recovery.
Try flashing the cf-root you need with odin.

[Q] Is my phone bricked?

I tried to recover a rom today using nandroid and I got some error after the md5 check saying something like error unable to load recovery. (I am currently in recovery console). I then proceded to reboot the phone and now it just shows the Vibrant logo and doesn't do anything I can not reboot into recovery or anything. Is my phone bricked? If not how do I fix this?
Try Odin'ing back to stock JFD... http://rootzwiki.com/topic/605-guid...nja-apps-everything/page__p__11106#entry11106

Thanks that seem to work, now all I have to do is reload a different rom and I should be good to go correct? Or do I have to reflash clockwork recovery or anything else?
Thanks

ODIN will not remove the update.zip so you can add a ROM and then go into clockwork then flash and your good to go. Try out Toxic or the new D9, there awesome.

Yes, you will have to re-flash recovery. If you have the update.zip on your SD card already (like ransz28 mentioned above) then just boot into stock recovery and (using the volumes to navigate and the power button to select) click on 'Reinstall Packages'. It will cycle a bit and you will see that yellow text again then it will return to the stock recovery. Select Reinstall packages again. You are now in CWR. Now you can flash your new ROM
If you get lost, don't have an update.zip, or want a step by step guide on flashing a new rom there's a guide for that to... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028 Just start at "GREAT, I AM ON JFD NOW - HOW DO I ROOT?"

[Q] TWRP & CWM dual boot? Is it possible?

I made a stock recovery on CWM...then later I got TWRP and I like it, but if I want my old recoveries I can't get to them. How can I create an option to boot one or the other when booting into recovery?
You will have to install CWM recovery back on the phone to install the CWM backups. Just keep the install file handy.
Can he get to CWM Recovery install from his new TWRP that comes up now when he boots into recovery??
I ask this, because I have(had) CWM and used it.. Then I went and installed TWRP.... and now it works.....
BUT my backup(nandroid) is CWM.....
and while using TWRP..I want to goto CWM and press install... and cannot find the CWM.zip (within TWRP)....
Do I have to goback to Odin and reinstall the CWM??? Where would it go??
Put the CWM install zip the same place you would place any *.zip files to install. TWRP should have no issue installing CWM.
thanks Ray... I did do this.. but TWRP doesn't recognize it.. Could it be because there is only the .tar inside the zip?? it's the zip I used for Odin... maybe I should use a different CWM zip.. I know there's quite a few.. thanks....
Yes... Odin files are not usable in recovery.
You need a zip made to use in recovery.
You will find a zip recovery here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526431

[Q] Factory built-in firmware backup

Hello,
is there any easy way to backup my original factory firmware so after I flash a new ROM and I won't like it I can revert back to what factory gave me?
Best you can do is root your phone, and do a nandroid backup in CWRecovery before doing anything else to the phone (flashing a custom rom/kernel/etc). This will give you a 'snapshot' of your stock setup only with root, and all you'd need to do to unroot is flash a stock kernel.
Or you can simply flash a stock rom with Odin over whatever you have at the time.
There's no way to do what you're asking with a stock/unrooted phone.
As mentioned above u can't do it with out rooting. First root your phone without flashing any custom rom or kernel by pasting the zip file in ext sd and apply update using stock recovery. Then download recovery tools from play store and get your temporary cwm touch recovery. After this go to stock recovery and apply this zip. Then do a nandroid backup and reboot after it finishes. You'll have the exact stock rom, kernel and recovery. :good:

I know you guys here don't like such questions, but can I ask for links to that tools? I got S2 Root file but it has to be flashed via Odin. What recovery tools from Play Store? You mean this?: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mkrtchyan.recoverytools&hl=pl
How can I get "my temporary CWM touch recovery"? What ZIP to apply then? Geez! Am I that stupid or it is just language issue? Hahaha

Dont worry dude. i'll try and explain as much as i can.
1. Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794 and choose the Root_SuperSU.0.96.Only-signed.zip or Root_SuperSU.0.98.Only-signed.zip from the attachments.
2. Paste it in your ext sd card and power off.
3. Reboot into recovery mode and choose apply update from sdcard and select the SuperSU file.
4. Now reboot your device and it will be successfully rooted and SuperSU will be installed.
5. Download temporary cwm recovery from their website or get it via recovery tools in play store. (link provided by you is correct except for different language i think )
6. Paste cwm.zip it in ext sd and reboot into recovery mode. apply update and you will get temporary cwm recovery.
7. Now you can take backup from it. it will backup all your data and both rom, kernel and even recovery will be stock.
Be careful while flashing roms or kernels though. :good:
