The next Evo successor - HTC EVO 3D

I was thinking..
First off, I'm very happy with my 3D.
OK, I started to think about next years Evo, Wondering how its going to be.
knowing Evo line is top dog for sprint. I know, Sprint wont disappoint next year.
I cant imagine what else can Htc can put in a phone to make it better?
Are super 3D phone is a nice phone. but, next years Evo should get better all around!
So just for fun, what do you guys think the next successor for are beloved Evo 3d will have under the hood?
I know Sprint is having a presentation in CES, which should be intresting.
also, Htc needs to step up there game knowing Samsung has taken the lead.
I 'm thinking they need to come out with something better than Galaxy Nexus which is Samsung best phone now.
And finally will Htc add 3d to the next Evo successor?
I hope next Evo has:
-Kickstand I really miss it.
-1080p recording
-4.7 inch 720p screen (want higher ppi than iphone)
-Cpu: I'm sorry Htc, just drop Qualcomm go with tegra 3!
-ram 1.5
-internal storage 16gb/up
-bigger battery 1950 mah?
-WORLD PHONE!?
-Lte? because wimax is having a slow death.
- Better 3D
Thoughts?

All that but I want two gigs of ram. Why you ask? Nintendo DS emulators haha. Two gigs and a tegra three would most likely make that possible

why Tegra 3? Qualcomm's S4 proccesor FTW

Qualcomm's S4 are better imo than tegra 3.
Google HTC EDGE / HTC ZETA .
1.5 GHz tegra vs 2.5GHz Qualcomm's S4

Yup Yup!!
Anyone that has doubts of Qualcomm needs to read up on their new s4 chips. Were talking LTE modem built into the freaking die of the chip itself! Supposed to save huge on battery life in regards to that aspect. Watch the engadget district video that has the HTC new developer tablet on it for ton more info.

Also its probable that we won't have the next big EVO till later in the year as compared to the past when its been June/july. Seems were lookin at septemberish now based on the sprint exec saying first LTE phones in late 3rd qtr next yr.

Qualcomm is probably one of the top tech companies in the world right now. Just because Tegra 2 had the spot light in 2011, don't underestimate the S3 and the upcoming S4. They have some of the highlight ARM architecture in all the world, focusing not just on raw power but a balance of on-board radios, power conservation, and developing their own GPUs.
I'm betting July will see the EVO LTE, maybe quad-core, 4.7" 720p with NFC and Beats audio, and of course LTE radio. By then, HTC might also make the full-time swap to AMOLED screens.
You have to look at it like this, the next EVO will be the TRUE EVO sequel, because original EVO owners will be coming off their 2-year contracts.

CPU
Thanks for the reply's.
Anyways, I took a look at Qualcomm s4 processors and was very impress.
I might have to take back what I said about dropping Qualcomm
and getting tegra 3.
Lastly I read somewhere that maybe Intel will be also making a announcement same time frame as sprint? maybe Evo super phone with Intel Cpu??

Why do you wish to have 1080p video capture? The compression would be horrible and the optics are quite crappie as it is for video. Just seems like a waste to me
Qualcomm is the best right now, but no reason to leave it. Wimax is going downhill fast though, so lte is much stronger signal to get inside buildings.

I just want one camera with a higher quality sensor and use the rest of that space for a decent speaker.
Dear HTC, we do not all live and work in quiet environments. When $20 prepaid throw away phones are ringing louder than yours, there is a problem.

I'd settle for the exact same CPU/GPU (clocked at 1.5) if it had a brighter 720p 3D screen that DIDN'T lower its resolution when in 3D (like 3DS, it would technically be 2560x720 ro 2560x1440, but have 1280x720 effectively in and out of 3D)
I'd buy two of the damned things. Why? F**k you, that's why!

The only reason WiMax penetration is so bad is because of the spectrum that Sprint uses for it currently. They are leveraging the 800mhz spectrum leftover from the iDen network Sprint acquired from Nextel right now, but I'm not sure if it's for LTE or not yet, I'm hoping it is bc that would make overall penetration much better. (that's what she said, lol.)
Anyways, to the point of this thread.
What I hope the Evo LTE has:
-keep the 4.3in screen (I don't care if it's 3D or not just better than the already amazing qHD) bc I like being able to fit this in my pocket and I have a tablet for a bigger screen.
-Qualcomm quad-core processor.
-1.5-2gb of ram.
-either make it come with 16gb onboard storage or throw in a 32gb microsd(Verizon's been doing it).
-Kickstand that allows for both landscape and portrait view.
-bring back HDMI (im not sold on the whole DLNA thing, but what do I know).
-10mp camera (don't care about 1080p for my phone, there are dedicated HD cameras out there for that).
-NFC
-keep the dedicated camera button (love it).
-have two different colors at launch as opposed to waiting.
-ICS (Duh)
-Sense 4.0 (I hated 1.0 but 3.0 and 3.5 have been great IMO).
-Gorilla Glass (Duh)
-Some type of net top ability a la motorola, but with chrome instead of firefox.
- Biggest battery possible with slimmest form factor.
-Keep the Black/Red accents (classy and sexy all at the same time.)
-Ditch the physical home/menu/back/search keys and keep the bezel to a minimum (phones look better when their screens take advantage of the real estate.)
-Removable bloatware (one can only hope...)
-unlockable bootloader at launch, no waiting months later (I'll still wait for S-off myself ;-)
-Aluminum unibody
-Google+ integration with sense bc I hate Facebook.
-and as always I hope it can cook, clean, and pleasure
-

Ditto, you pretty much nailed what the next one should be like.
I'll add that they dial up Carl Ziess & get serious about the camera & it's lens.

- I want an AMOLED screen....first and foremost. After seeing how amazing things look on those screens, I won't consider any phone that doesn't have that in the future.
- At least 16GB of eMMC storage
- MicroSDXC capable card slot
- Screen size like the Galaxy Nexus
- Include the stock android launcher. I like sense apps (messaging, browser, etc), but give me the option to use the stock launcher
- Processor/GPU of similar/better performance to the Exynos processors in the ET4G
- LTE and WiMax radios. If sprint is going to continue to support wimax, there will be pockets where you have one, but not the other. Allow us to connect to both.

Make the phone thinner!
It should look more like the HTC Sensation, but maybe a 4.5 inch HD screen.
bigger battery
More ram
BETTER camera

One thing i dont want to see is it being thinner or redic. thin. I like the size thickness wise of the phones now to be honest.

-LTE
-Tegra3 Processor 1.5ghz. Not underclocked.
-An actual 4gb ram after software installation.
-16gb internal storage with 64gb microsd slot
-Keep qHD res. Higher res means harder to find crystal clear wallpapers.
-Samsung display colors. They are gorgeous.
-ICS Stock
-Kickstand(A MUST)
-2000mah battery or higher in a slim design.
-All black sleek design with red casing like Evo 4G.
-Better camera photo wise.
-Last but not least...Button apart of the phone again. Not the back door like this phone. My power button sinks in and I have to remove the door and put it back on to fix it again.

Idiot's Guide to Nexus S and EVO3D - For Idiots.

So after trying to decide between the two for myself, I've decided to try to help other like-minded users find the phone that's best for them.
If you see anything incorrect or missing, please let me know!
I'll start with the Nexus S 4G
Software:
Ships with Gingerbread
Will receive upgrades first
Will likely run Icecream (HC reworked for phones)
AOSP
No bloatware, and no Sprint apps
Hardware:
1GHz Hummingbird Processor
512MB RAM
4" Super AMOLED screen
16gb internal storage
NO MicroSD card slot
NFC Capability
5MP rear camera
VGA Front camera
1500 mAh Li-ion battery
GPU rated as good, if not slightly better than EVO3D's Adreno 220**
Unique Contour display*
*The contour display can best be seen here. Essentially, the display curves slightly at the ends and reviews have reported it feeling nice against your face. Aside from the feel, the SAMOLED display grants more vivid colors, more luminance, and more contrast, making text easy to read at most sizes.
**Which means the Nexus S will be able to display graphics on a similar caliber of the EVO3D, which is much higher than the EVO.
Layman's terms? Have you noticed how bad the N64 Emulator is on the EVO? It should run beautifully on the Nexus S, and even better on the EVO3D.
Media
DLNA Support for wirelessly streaming media from the phone to your TV or computer
Supported video, audio, and image formats are not known yet, but we can safely assume the standards are there.
Release date: "Spring" 2011
Price: $199 on contract
Form:
An important spec of phones to some users is also their outside form. Here's what we've got on the Nexus
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Size and weight:
63mm x 123.9mm x 10.88mm
129g
4" contour display
Feel: CNET and user reviews say it feels light, and the material feels ´lighter´without metal parts.
This will make it feel more airy, smaller, and less bulky than the current EVO, which is very similar to the EVO3D
Users have reported a 'cheapy' plastic feel to the Nexus S, similar to the Epic. Other than that, there's no decision one way or another if that could be an issue when dropping the phone.
Advice? Don't drop your phone, no matter which model. Or buy a case of some sort.
Summary:
If you end up selling your EVO for $200 (easily done), you'll be able to upgrade to this phone for free. Why would you do that? Well, it's free, and it's a hardware and, eventually, a software upgrade from the EVO. While it boasts almost the same specs as the EVO, the processor is newer and the screen displays more colors with more vibrance.
Currently, the TMO Nexus S has benchmarks that run circles around the EVO and battery life that has been reported to last ~20 hours off-charger. Sound good to you? Same to me.
The phone will definitely last you through 2011, and likely a good chunk, if not all, of 2012. I anticipate it will also be receiving Android versions 2.4 and 3.1 (If that's Ice Cream), which will be more than capable of running on this phone, even if Quad-Core phones are released and run it as well.
Aside from the hardware, the software will be top-notch. You'll receive the latest Android software updates as soon as they're released, and the dev community should be buzzing on this phone, considering its AOSP nature.
Who is this phone good for?
Economically-minded users who want a boost from their current EVO and/or want a great developing experience. If the latest and greatest Google software is your thing, this phone is for you. Keep in mind that Nexus S already runs the Honeycomb SDKs and it will be a breeze to port the AOSP Honeycomb to the Nexus S once the source is released. Further more, AOSP will finally be developing code for WiMax chips, which will help ROMs like CM in incorporating WiMax. You'll also get WiMax on CM8 (When released) first, most likely.

Intro:
"How do you follow up one of the most popular, most successful, biggest and fastest phones of 2010? In the case of the recently announced Sprint HTC EVO 3D, you give it a higher resolution screen, 3D recording and playback capability, and you open up a whole new world of user generated content. Oh, and you make it even faster and more powerful."
-Source
EVO 3D
Software:
Ships with Gingerbread
Includes Sense 2.0 (?)
Includes Sprint Software
Hardware:
1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor
1GB RAM (Which can be expanded* into the External Storage, giving you up to 5GB RAM, which diminishes as you fill internal storage, down to a minimum of 1GB)
1GB Internal Storage (Previous rumors stated 4GB. This still isn't clear or confirmed at all either way.)
4.3" 3D qHD Display with a resolution of 960x540
Expandable memory: 8GB microSD card included: supports up to 32GB
Dual 5 MP cameras used to capture 3D images and videos
1.3MP front-facing camera
1730 mAh Li-ion battery
HDMI port
No kickstand... Devastating, I guess?
*Much like a page file on a PC This has also been pointed out as a rumor, and is MOST LIKELY NOT TRUE
Media:
DLNA for wirelessly streaming media from the phone to your TV or computer
Audio supported formats:
Playback: .AAC, .AMR, .OGG, .M4A, .MID, .MP3, .WAV, .WMA (Windows Media Audio 9)
Recording: .AMR
Video supported formats:
Playback:.3GP, .3G2, .MP4, .WMV (Windows Media Video 9), .AVI (MP4 ASP and MP3), .XVID (MP4 ASP and MP3)
Recording: .3GP
Form:
The EVO3D is similar in look and shape to the EVO. Here's what we've got
Size and Weight:
126mm x 65mm x 12.05mm (4.96" x 2.56" x 0.47")
170 grams (6.0 ounces) with the battery
Feel:
Taken from Engadget's hands-on review:
"As we'd mentioned in our hands-on, we immediately noticed that the EVO 3D didn't feel particularly heavy or bulky in the hand; in fact, we would've guessed that it was a bit lighter than the 4G. Well, turns out they're almost exactly the same weight -- holding the two one right after the other, we couldn't detect a difference.
As for dimensions, the 4G is actually wider -- the 3D's quite a bit more manageable when you're holding it, especially if you don't have giant paws -- and they're right around the same thickness."
Price: unknown
Release date: "Summer" 2011 (June)
Summary:
If you want the latest Sprint power-phone with latest industry hardware and technology - You won't be disappointed. While there are mixed reviews and feelings about the 3D feature of the phone, it seems that 3D is completely optional and is simply an added bonus for buying this already great phone.
Battery life is undetermined right now. While it boasts an industry-leading 1730 mAh Li-ion battery and the processor is some times number more efficient than the current EVO, people speculate it to have as much batter life as the current EVO.
In short: Like your EVOs now, this phone will be fast, bold, and furious, taken to a new extreme.
EDIT: Since the question has been asked on the forums, I've done a little bit of research:
How will the EVO 3D's display hold up against iPhone 4's?
To answer it shortly, the EVO 3D has a slightly lower resolution (960x540) than the iPhone 4 (960x640). Being that the EVO3D has a larger screen and a lower resolution, this means that the PPI (pixels per inch) will be lower, resulting in a slightly less sharp display.
Who is this phone good for?
Power-users who want only the best for themselves. Want to play the latest 3D graphics-intensive games on your phone? EVO3D is for you (please don't mistake 3D graphics for 3D images)
If you buy into the 3D thing, you'll also be able to shoot and view photos and videos in 3D.
This phone has power, screen size, and speed that make it worthwhile to keep far into the future.

Deal running through 4/16, but call Sprint to check.
Thanks! I already knew all of this, but it'll help some people here for sure.
Also, the Nexus S has a contour display, which you didn't mention.
Oh right, thanks! I'll add that in for sure. Don't forget to hit the thanks button if you thought it was helpful Even if not for you.
I like how this was titled, Idiot's Guide.....for idiots.
No way lmao.
Haha, thanks man.
I'm in no way an expert, I'm a slightly above-average user when it comes to knowledge of hardware and software. I'm just compiling info that I dug around for myself and ask tons of questions on --- and I'm putting it in (hopefully) layman's terms.
Do you all think I should include a comparison of the two phones to the iPhone 4, since everyone seems to use the iPhone as a comparison tool?
So nexus s is a better phone the first gen Evo? I am within my 30 days so I can return my new evo and get the S, I don't want to wait for the 3D as I will be running a blackberry curve until release

Im so sick of the iphone presumably being the "standard" of all smartphones.
I am sick of it too! Everything is compared to Iphone, iphone is lame. Maybe its good for people who dont know any better, lol.
I took a long look at nexus s, it may be a bit better than evo 1st gen but I dont care for the look of it. The plastic back, reminds me of the Epic, feels cheap in the hand
You forgot to mention that the gpu in the nexus is actually just as powerful as the adreno 220 if not a little better

I mean in 2007 they did set the bar for smartphone (touchscreens) but that might just be someones opinion :rolls eyes: Hate it or love it these companies all make their next moves based on apple. That means apple has the market by the balls. I'm not a fan boy but I speak the truth young Jedi.

Being that this is an idiot's guide for idiots, you'll have to explain that to me and put it in layman's terms. I know what a GPU is, but not what the Adreno 220

HTC Puccini

anyone have an idea of when this will be released?
I'm planning on returning my flyer to get this
seems pretty ready to sell
htc sense honeycomb is ready
passed FCC
mass production ready in June
http://pocketnow.com/android/htc-puccini-for-att-first-screenshots
http://www.bgr.com/2011/07/26/htc-puccini-the-companys-first-10-inch-tablet-uncovered/
http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/18/htcs-puccini-tablet-passes-through-the-fcc-has-atandt-written-al/
and do you think there would be a WiFi version?
I have been waiting for the Puccini for too long. I want a 10 inch stereoscopic 3d tablet with a dual or quad core processor, scribe technology(a place to put the pen in the tablet), wifi only, front facing camera on the front and a 3d camera on the back. I want htc to release there code for it as soon as it is released. I wanted ice cream sandwich as soon as android releases it, with face tracking for 3d on the front facing camera and all. Is this too much to ask? Do they understand how many of these tablets they would sell. They can add LTE, HSPA+, 3G, WIMAX. I don't care as long as you can buy if off contract. HTC is taking way too long to release any tablet other then the flyer/evo view which is way too small with the 7 inch screen, under powered with a single core processor and not even running honeycomb. I'm waiting for the next tablet that comes close to these. I favor htc but am a fan of asus too. But I will convert to another company that can actually but these things together. I want a good tablet NOW!
You might want to consider the Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet (NOT the K1) then.

They are coming... Here's a way to accelerate the process:
Hold your breath.
I guarantee when its all over you'll be able to take your pick of a number of tablets with ALL the above characteristics in your afterlife.
hopefully there will be a $499 version
I knew about the Puccini before I bought the Flyer but it was the case of who knew when it would come out, for how much and how long it'd take to get imported to my country. Plus I've got the HTC Sensation which is the same chipset (slightly lower clockspeed of course). I'll hold off on a new tablet upgrade until the quadcore ones (preferably Krait) are out. I wonder what tactic HTC will take next year with tablets with the new Windows coming out. I'd love dual-boot on next year's tablets. I don't care that much about windows but there are still programs which will only work on it (which makes me curious about legacy support).
Back on topic. I prefer the size of the Flyer. If I had two tablets then maybe I'd go for a 10 incher as the secondary one. But for standard use I prefer the 7" size (which is not only a great comfortable size for reading one handed but also the PERFECT size for me when it comes to games like battleheart and Plants vs. Zombies as my thumbs can reach all points on the screen to make the necessary plays).
thanks!
yea I'm just debating on which tablet I want basically only considering the size of the tablets
I really like the 7 inch size too but I was thinking maybe the screen sizes with the sensation are too similar. If the 7 inch size is really good with the 4.3 inch phone along with it then I would love to keep the sensation
Don't forget that screen sizes despite being measured diagonally (linearly) are actually a question of area. That's why despite a 10" tablet "only" being 3 more inches it's actually about double in size. Same with the Sensation and Flyer, you can fit about three Sensation screens in the space occupied by the Flyer.
I honestly don't think you'll be disappointed by using the two together (though obviously it depends on your preferences )
icic
yea i think I'm gonna keep both then
cuz even thought its seven inches its really nice to hold.
i never thought it would feel nice to hold a 7inch tablet
i wonder how puccini will be though
hopefully it'll be long before they release it like a year so i won't have to update so quickly
Puccini looks awesome. I keep thinking the added screen real estate of 10" tab would be really nice for web surfing or watching video on the couch. But to be honest, I've really grown to like the 7" form factor of the Flyer. Its nice to easily hold it in one hand like a paperback book when reading an eBook, or taking notes. And the portability can't be beat. I don't think I would exchange my Flyer for a Puccini, at most get the larger tab in addition to the Flyer.
The other thing I've noticed about the 10" tabs, is that they are all pretty heavy in comparison to the Flyer. While the Flyer is heavy for a 7" tab, all the 10" tabs are significantly heavier, and feel that way. The ones that don't feel like real clunkers are the ones that stick to almost all plastic bodies (like the iPad and the Galaxy Tab 10.1). 10" tabs with a metal back (like the Xoom) have a more high-end feel, but weigh almost twice as much as the Flyer! Has information been released about the body construction of the Puccini? The sketch from the FCC filing seems to hint that its an aluminum unibody like most of HTC's recent products (and similar to the Flyer). If true, it would seem like the Puccini will weigh a ton, and might not feel to great in the hands (especially holding with one hand).

[Q] RAZR, Nexus or Vigor/Rezound?

My upgrade is up, as I'm sure other Eris owners are as well. Just wondering where all the Eris owners are going? I jumped ship to a used Incredible this summer. It's a great phone, but the forums and developers aren't the same as the Eris. There are virtually no AOSP developers(except condemned), like all the great ones on the Eris.
What do you guys think? RAZR, NExus or Rezound.(still a terrible name HTC)
Nexus here I come
If I weren't looking to dev, I would definitely get the Galaxy Nexus. The decision becomes more complicated for me though as I feel working on a Nexus device won't be as challenging, needed, or fun to work with. Since it will already be pure android and get updates quickly, many people don't need and won't use custom ROMs. The things I enjoy most about Android development has been figuring stuff out, improving on the stock experience, and sharing what I've done with others that find it useful. That's why I have yet to decide between the Galaxy Nexus and the Vigor/Rezound. I know either phone will be great so I can't really lose either way. The RAZR was out of the running once I heard it would have a locked bootloader.
I'm thinking vigor for myself..... Or whatever they end up calling it. Hopefully not rezound though. That's rather gay imo

After getting a Bionic, I spent 12 days frustrated with dropped data and battery life (which seems to be problematic with all of the 4G phones. Also, it was dropping 3G even when I had it set to CDMA only. Frustrating.) I also thought it was a little too big.
So, I went with a Droid 3. It's a solid, fast 3G phone, great size (a little thicker than I'd like, but it's actually the same as the Eris), and I can give the OEMs and VZW 20 months to perfect LTE. (I also wanted a phone with a solid radio, so I was staying away from HTC. Hopefully the Rezound will be better, though.)
I hope that this fascination with slabs that don't fit in your pocket is a temporary fad and the Nexus is the last phone that silly big.

No, it's still locked.
Nexus for me :3. I just need to do a once over in the store when I can before I am totally set. I'm glad it was Rooted (or at least temp-rooted) today as I adopted the Eris early on and flash the 2.1 RUU only to be stuck without a root for months…traumatizing. That is also why I won't play the Motorola locked bootloader game. And I really don't want another skinned phone, just CM7 (or 8 I guess it will be).

Dinc2 is free on tigerdirect.com and Tb is $39
Sent using my 666th Inc from remote regions of hell
Yeah those are new-line prices. The TB isn't that cheap on an upgrade.
I made a spreadsheet of all the phones I've looked at that are free plus added the droid charge for comparison.
The list was:
Breakout - Good: LTE, 720P, Bad: Low memory (256+8GB), standard LCD, 5MP cam
Stratosphere - Good: LTE, Keyboard, SAMOLED BAD: 5MP, 480P, Low memory (4GB+4GB)
Revolution -Great: 4.3", Mem (16+16) Good: 480x800, 720P, LTE Bad: 5MP
Charge - Great - 4.3", Mem (2+32), SAMOLED+, LTE BAD: Not free
DX2 - Great - 4.3", 540x960, Dual Core Tegra 2 Good: (8+8), 8mp, 720p, Bad: no 4g
Dinc2 - Bad: Low internal memory, no LTE, 5MP Good: 16GB sd,
GzOne - Bad: low memory, 800Mhz cpu - (eliminated)
Droid Pro - Bad: Low resolution, Low memory (eliminated)
Continuum - Bad: Small screen, low memory, no 4g
Droid R2-D2 - Good: Keyboard, 480x854 Bad: no LTE, small SD (8gb)
Fascinate - Good: SAMOLED, 16BG sd Bad: no lte, low mem (2gb), 5MP
On the spreadsheet, teal means above and beyond, and pink means below what I want, but not yet a deal breaker. Green means what I want, and red is a dealbreaker. Yellow is a base line.
When I mean free, it means between Wirefly and Tigerdirect or some other place. (the revolution is .01 so I call that free)
The fascinate starts to look a little less desireable now.
It is looking more like it is down to the stratosphere, DX2, and revolution.
The Revolution seems to be the best free 4G phone and most memory, but the DX2 seems to blow it away in every other respect. I've sort of wanted a keyboard so the stratosphere is still in the running despite the other down sides (smaller memory)

Well, after the wonderful spreadsheets, a trip to Big Red and a look at the RAZR, ReZound, Tbolt, Charge, and Revolution I just bought a Bionic via Amazon.
It fits my current needs and I believe a great middle of the road choice. My brother has had one since day one and after a growing pain or two, loves his. LOL! At 62+ and retired, I am finally to a point I need reading glasses. The screen/font on the ERIS just got too small Yeah I know I can make it bigger but then I'm scrolling all over the place. I refuse to wear the glasses dangling around my neck. It's a PIA!
RAZR - Pricey, didn't care for the BS the salesman was touting about the non-replaceable battery. Who decides when the battery isn't lasting long enough
ReZound - I'm not a big "Sense" guy, that's one reason I rooted. The salesman even mentioned the radio.
TBolt - Too much said about the battery. Didn't feel as good as I thought it would in the store.
Charge/Stratosphere - Didn't care for the screen it was washy on both phones and in two different stores. Why is Charge stuck on FROYO?
Revolution - Unimpressive, slow and dodgy
My test, I went in to the store before the crowds hit. I insured the setup on the phones were the same tethering, hotspot and WiFi off, running on 4G. Opened maps and zoomed in on the Verizon store. Flipped the map left and right and around in a circle. Flipped through the apps, sent a text message to my wife then called her on each phone toggling the speaker. There was more. Anywho, when the day was done the Bionic won. It is a big sucker, but I'll adapt. Good luck to all on your choices!
Since a good deal of you that I need to say Thanks to are in or may yet view this thread....THANKS!....thanks for keeping the "Little Phone That Could" alive for me. You all taught me a lot and it has been an exciting ride ever since I first "rooted". The best to you all and I hope to be following a thread or two on the Bionic side.
Be well ERIS,
Decon
rezound for me can't handle such a small amount of internal space
Currently on an eris.
Waiting for the Nexus
I will be getting one of the following phones, Nexus, Razr or Rezound. I've played with the Rezound and Razr a little at the Verizon store but have yet to get my hands on the Nexus. I'll have to make my choice whenever they have it in the stores. For me it is between the Razr and Nexus.

HTC evo 4g lte or sgs3

Which would you buy and which do you think will offer more roms. I'm available for an upgrade now.

I had the same choice yesterday . I honestly picked the S3, HTC's UI gets boring and old after a while and i have an HTC phone right now. I wanna try something new and that 2gigs of ram is hard to pass on.
That's what I was thinking plus the larger screen is an added bonus on the s3.

I wouldn't want to miss my 64gb microsd and an exchangable/extendable battery. So I'd go for a SIII. What a shame that HTC removed both.
Pretty sure the lte sprint version has micro sd. Battery not removable although weak, is yet a minor detail along with the multiple positives of the solid build of the physical phone itself, and sense upgraded goodness. My plan is to simply snag a portable charger from radioshack n be done with the quarells of non-removable battery. Not to mention you should go check out the EvoLTE forums and the bat life peeps are getting. If ya really don't care for sense, pretty sure aosp n AOKP will be dropped for it eventually n with that, even more battery life...
~Freshly re-acquired evo rockin' NRGZ; from the mogul up ta present, but then AOKP happened. P.S. f**k the police....
Both phones are very good. If you are on sprint then its a given, just go with the evo. If your not then you have more room to play. However I would recommend the evo over the Samsung GS3. First Sprint gives true unlimited data and already has the evo, not the GS3. Giving props to the GS3 for the slightly bigger screen is a no-no. It is only a tenth of an inch bigger. Besides the bigger the screen, the more cpu/gpu power used. Speaking of that the evo has a snap dragon krait @ 1.5 GHZ dual core while the Exnos is @ 1.4 GHZ dual core. The Krait is a fairly popular CPU and is extreamly fast and responsive for its generation. It also in many other devices with have a large development behind them, therefore the CPU will be better tuned and potently have a higher overclock the the exnos. If you are concerned about ram, why should you be? The evo can easily run all applications that can be thrown at it including games. For the record virtual ram is available now.... (ya it wont be as fast enitialy, but what if they were to mount it to the rom instead of the standard class 5 micro sd card...) And if you enjoy gameing your in luck Htc's one line is the first 3rd party company to exclusively be accepted by Sony's playstation, allowing you to be able to play some exclusive playstaion games. The evo, in my personal opinion has a far superior build quality then Samsung's cheap plastic mat finish. When it comes to Customer care, support and updates, htc will surpass samsung. There are a lot of cool new software features such as S Voice on Samsung though, although a lot of people say they are lousy, and just another selling point to compete with Apple's precious Siri app. IF you are conserned about the batterlife, the evo has a larger battery then the GS3, and even though its non removable, it last a long time. I own it and im a power user. I cant stop using it. If you look at the popular devices section you will see mainly samsung devices, although the evo is on there and shurely will reach #1 as its original, the htc evo 4g did ,witch was the #1 device for well over a year. Development will pretty much be even though, maybe the evo a little beter, having a starting chance. There is so much more info that i could talk about but im starting to ramble on and on. When it comes to picking a device I look for the best device weather it is a brand name or not and the amount of potential development it will receive. That being said I pick the evo and would recommend it as the best Smarthphone on the market to anyone looking to buy a new phone! I know this may seem very one sided, but i did my research before choosing between the two (yes these are the exact to phones i was comparing before making a final decision). I own many samsung products and am not saying the GS3 is bad, just not the best choice. Give me a thanks if I have helped anyone with this matter, and if not, be mature and do not flame me or others providing information to help the general public!

It does have a micros sd card holder under the plastic portion under the top back of the phone that covers the camera, NFC, and all other antennas. You don't have to be tethered to a charger all day like many other smart-phones because the batter life is fantastic. Have you ever heard of Sedio? They are making a battery case for the evo right now. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1667613 (all thanks go to the OP!) Sense is so well optimized that you forget its even there. All of the features you loved remain. It feels like AOKP/AOSP but with the option of adding sense widgets!
Hi5josh man you need to do some research. First off they will both share the krait s4 processor that you think so highly of. Second of all the S3 has a bigger battery than the Evo LTE. Hey listen if you like the Evo LTE thats cool but dont post information unless you get it correct (no offense). One more thing honestly the whole Sony thing is a gimmick they didnt announce or show any games yet. Dont expect any ps1, or 2 games to be played on your EVO that would just defeat the purpose of the Playstation Vita. HTC will probably get some Homebrew games from third party developers through Sony. Samsung has already had a game center so not missing much there at all.

[Q] Evo 4g LTE vs Galaxy S3: Developement

I just wanted to get some input about what everyone thinks about the 3rd party development concerning these two phones. I currently have, and still love, my original Evo 4g. I have it rooted with CM7 installed.
I'm on Sprint, and I love being able to use the free wifi hotspot built into CM7 without paying a ton of money to sprint. I like having emulators and playing all my old favorite games on the TV.
The difference in the screens doesn't bother me much, but I figured the extra power of the GS3 would be very beneficial with the way I use the phone. On the other hand, I've heard custom mods and development aren't near as good with the GS3.
So the main question:
Should I go for the raw power of the GS3, or the more modding and developer friendly LTEVo? I really don't want to lose my free wifi hotspot... I use it all the time and I'm not sure if I can get it with the GS3.
The free hot spot you can get when you root with any phone, so that's a non issue.
My understanding is the phones are about the same, the galaxy has more RAM it seems, but the processor is about the same. You should consider build.quality. do you like how the EVO looks and feels or the Sammy? I don't like the plastic feel of the Samsung phones myself. It's a personal choice.
Also the front buttons on the galaxy are ugly, and u like dedicated camera button on the EVO. And kickstand.

My main reason for moving to HTC (from Samsung Epic 4G) is OEM support. Samsung could care less about upgrading phone's they've already sold. You can bet your mortgage on the Evo getting Jelly Bean before the Galaxy S III, and I'm sure we're talking a difference in months.

I'm thinking the same but usually upgrades are a pain cause so many differences and carriers, I think sprint got the best track record with upgrades but maybe is because they don't have so many phones as Verizon and att, plus this time around the device is the same @ll over the us carriers so it should be easier, I'm getting the gs3 on tmobile since I already have tmobile but I'm keeping my EVO and wait for lte and the only thing that I hate about my EVO 3g doesn't cut it sometimes, when the evo came out I had not problems with 3g and that's all I used cause 4G will kill battery quick, to the op they both are great phones I think you should try the gs3 and if you prefer sense too much(even tho you said you like cm7) then get evo lte, btw development on the gs3 will be probably better then evo only because is the same phone in all major us carriers so all those developers will make roms for each on carrier and just changed radios and what not for the other carrier so it will be amazing and that was what Myn was talking about when he choose to get the GS3
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using Tapatalk 2
I laugh at anyone who chooses the Galaxy S3 because it has twice as much RAM as the Evo LTE. RAM wasn't a bottleneck in the 3D so why would it be an issue in the LTE? It was hardly a problem with the 4G. Phones simply don't utilize all that RAM. Adding more won't change anything.
Your decision should come down to maybe a handful of things. Probably the biggest knock against the Evo LTE is the battery. You have the freedom to access the S3's battery whenever you please without having to remove screws. For some people, that's a dealbreaker and they would shell out for the S3. Likewise, others would prefer the dedicated camera button.
At the end of the day, the decision is yours. I'm not really sure if I ever see myself buying a phone not made by HTC. Their products are simply amazing. I don't have anything against Samsung, it's just I love the three flagship Evos I have owned. I haven't found a reason to abandon them.
I think the question that has been asked has not yet been answered. Which phone will have more custom roms available. Or, maybe more importantly which will get a fully functional Cyanogen mod or other popular rom first?

Im running cm9 on my Evo Lte now it's almost perfect no video camera yet. I think the SG 3 already has official cm support because Samsung already released source, HTC hasn't yet. Im pretty sure once source comes out the evo will get official support too. So to me it's which phone you like better, they're so close spec wise.

Actually I do consider more ram more power. It's not technically processing power, but if something makes it run faster, then I consider it giving it more power. Not technically correct, but it's still faster.
And no, that much more ram is not an issue when just using the phone to make calls and surf the web, or even play games from the market. But I already stated that one of the biggest things I use it for is playing on emulators. Well more ram IS needed for the later gen console emulators to run smoothly, especially when mirroring to the TV. My original 4g didn't run alot of N64 games smoothly when on the TV. You may laugh at me choosing the GS3 for more ram, but obviously you don't know anything about computer hardware if you actually paid attention to the post and still came to that conclusion.
-------------------------
I think the GS3 is going to be the better choice. The removable battery and more RAM are pretty big selling points. Not to mention the battery life on the GS3 is way better also. I'm not particularly concerned about it "feeling cheap" and I don't mind not having a camera button. I think the GS3 has some cooler camera features anyways. I will miss the kickstand though. Jgalan14 brought up a good point, hopefully the GS3 will get decent mods as well, if not I guess I can deal with it as long as I just get the free wifi hotspot from rooting. Especially since the main reason I modded was because of the Bluetooth issues keeping you from connecting Wiimotes to the Evo 4g; modding isn't necessary to connect Bluetooth controllers to the GS3. (Even tho CM7 has been awesome, so I may use Cyanogen mods again on the GS3)
Mainly, I think the GS3 will be much better at running emulators.
Now I'm just going to have to go buy one of those stupid proprietary MHL cables... that's my one big complaint about the GS3.
I can run any emulators I want on my transformer prime flawlessly. Guess how much ram it has. 1gb.
You can't even compare n64 roms running choppy on the OG evo to the new evo. Major OS update, single core 1ghz cpu vs dual core 1.5 ghz, 512mb ram compared to 1gb.
Not to say, if a ps2 emulator ever becomes mainstream it couldn't be beneficial. But haven't they also stated, that the extra gig of ram is dedicated to running touchwiz.
So you really arent getting any extra ram, your just getting some more of your 1gb free'd up because it's not running the skin. Seems silly considering the benchmarks are even favoring the evo at this point.

Lol that's a kick I'm the nuts, 2gb of ram!! AMD a small print disclaimer saying 1gb is to run touchwiz smoothly lol screw SG3

Hold your horses here...
I'm getting pretty sick and tired of these "more RAM=1337 ph0ne" comments that are parroted endlessly everywhere. No Android phone has ever had 2GB of RAM before... The bottom line is that its benefits remain to be seen. From what we do know, it really shouldn't help at all (given the way Android utilizes RAM). Maybe with Android 5 or 6 (lol) down the line? Who knows.
What I do know for sure right now is that RAM it will precisely 0 effect on its emulator performance. That all comes down to developer optimization for particular chipsets. At the level Android phone emulators are currently operating (not to mention the basic systems they're emulating), RAM is the last thing that will help. Now a future PS2 emulator might be a different story, although the S4 is not nearly powerful enough to run it at anywhere near acceptable levels.
Battery life "way better" on the S3? Can I have some of what you are smoking sir? The only difference is a 100mah battery in its favor. Every review I've read so far has stated that it has, at most, equal battery life to the EVO/ATT One X. Removable battery is a nice plus though.
IMO the big difference to consider between these two phones is software, plain and simple.
How is 100mAh significantly more battery? Not to mention gsmarena battery test had the EVO at 45, the int gs3 at 43

I wasn't trying to directly compare... I was just stated that for reference. As far as the extra ram being used up by touchwiz, then that just means there is one more huge reason to keep using Cyanogen like I am now. Goodbye touchwiz, hello extra 1Gb RAM!! Even if current emulators and apps can't take full advantage of the extra RAM, I think it still does make it more future proof than the LTEvo. And even if you can't unlock the other 1GB from touchwiz, it still will make the phone faster and less laggy with dedicated RAM for the UI.
As far as the benchmarks, I'm not really sure where you got that information. A link would be nice = D
I'm not a dead set fan of either phone. I have thoroughly enjoyed my original Evo. I just want to pick the better phone for how I want to use it. So far, I haven't seen anything to sway my choice towards the LTEvo. The better/removable battery and the extra RAM are pretty big.
-------------------------
So far from this post and more research, this is what I've found.
Evo 4g LTE:
- Looks like the rear facing camera is better
- Better display
- It's not all plastic
- Kickstand!
- Hardware camera button
- Doesn't rely on proprietary accessories (a la S3 MHL cable)
- Beats audio
Galaxy S3
- Extra RAM (even if it is dedicated to Touchwiz, that is just a big chunk less of the original 1GB being used for the UI, which means more free RAM)
- Same phone across all carriers, hopefully leading to more/easier 3rd party development
- More camera functions (continuous shooting / best shot)
- Removable battery
- Longer lasting battery
- 32 Gb option available
- .6 MP larger front facing camera
- Better multitasking than the LTEvo (no reloading)
- S-Voice
@nkchri2. Are you sure you understand that 1.5gb of ram sitting around doing nothing on your phone will be just as useful as 200mb or ram sitting around on your phone doing nothing? The extra ram, whether it be 100mb or 8gb's, does the exact same thing. It is just sitting there. Now if you feel you will have 100 apps open at the same time then maybe you will see the benefit. If ram even matters at all at this point, it certainly doesn't matter to the degree at which you are giving it right now

I missed the two post concerning my comments on the battery life. The S3 having a way better battery was the wrong way of putting it I guess. Yes, it's only 100mAh more, so it has a 5% larger battery. I guess the point is the S3 must be much easier on its battery. You mentioned gsmarena...
gsmarena(dot)com
/compare.php3?idPhone1=4804&idPhone2=4665
(Forum wont let me post links yet... so I had to list it that way)
This compares the two phones and lists the S3 having 2 hours and 30 minutes longer talk time the the LTEvo. I have seen a few other websites also showing a clear advantage in the battery life with video and surfing as well, I just can't find that link and gsmarena just lists talk time numbers. If I do I'll repost.

Even if it doesn't.. does it hurt to have it? Everyone just keeps posting about how the extras the GS3 has "doesn't matter". I'm not trying to offend anyone, but I posted in this forum to get information ABOUT the LTEvo, but seems like most people are just LTEvo fans that want to flame the GS3, not really comparing. Okay, well like I said, I'm not dead set on getting either, but if that stuff doesn't matter...
What does the LTEvo have to offer that the GS3 doesn't that would make me want it instead?
I made a list in a previous post but I still think I'm leaning more towards the GS3, but if anyone has something I'm missing on the LTEvo I'd love to hear it.

Dude you are in the EVOLTE forum, we are all users and fans of this phone. What do you expect? Ofcourse we will lean towards the evo more. Both are good phones, but honestly we like the evo way more otherwise we wouldnt have bought it and actively discuss and praise it. Stop trolling with the gs3 is better crap.
