Root on ICS? - HTC Rezound

You know guys and girls I'm wondering if we update to ICS before the permanent root is out. Is gonna be harder to achieve? Is gonna be easier? Or possible? What do you guys and girls think?

What do you mean with "what update"?
Nexus is out with 4.0 so it won't take long to get the update to the ReZound.
Rocking My Unbelievable Crazy Rezound

Well once s-off is achieved I'm pretty sure custom ICS ports will be available. Root shouldn't be too difficult I believe with S-off/unlocked boot loader.

Yes but what if we get the ics push before s-off/perm root is achieve?

I posted about this before. My opinion is S-Off/etc should be easier to achieve on ICS. Why, well with every new leap in Android there are always new holes to exploit. Look how many times the Xoom got updated in the first 7 months, 3 times. Isn't ICS already up to 4.1 on the nexus?

4.2 they said in the nexus forum.

I read on Engadget that the GN on Verizon was at 4.0.2

When the Galaxy Nexus owners power on their phones, they will get a notification about the update yo 4.0.2

With development moving as slow as it is, I'm betting that we will see an update to ICS before we get S-off/Perm Root on the Rezound.

I can't see how one (ICS) has anything to do with the other (S-off). I mean unless HTC changes the bootloader and recovery partitions with the new version of the UI which by all rights shouldn't happen because it's still a lot of the same Android under the covers.

I wouldn't worry about that for a while. HTC is famous for promising upgrades and then slowly pushing them back. (correct me if I am wrong, but all I've heard out of HTC is beginning of 2012. With their history I don't expect it until at least the 2nd quarter of 2012.)
This phone will have S-Off and Cyanogenmod 9 long before HTC/Verizon push out an official ICS update.

Misread what I meant. I didn't make a thread about it. I just stated something like that in another thread that it might be more viable to wait for ICS to try to get s-off.

In Regards to the Update Coming Soon

Seeing that there is a boatload of work to install this leak, I decided that its probably time to do homework instead of trying to play with my phone at 2AM.
However, I have noticed a lot of people saying that the release cannot be too far behind since the leak came out.
I'm a bit skeptical on this idea, because didn't a leak come out for the HTC Sensation ages ago? Now, I did not research much, but as far as I know (again, I may be wrong), the Sensation didn't have an official update either.
Its definitely not too far-fetched to think that the update might be delayed even further. HTC did promise that the updates would be early 2012 and as we all know, "early 2012" was a long time ago. Some said the updates would be during MWC, some said otherwise. What do you guys think?
As for development, this is definitely a very good sign as the interest and traffic for the HTC Amaze the past two days were quite phenomenal. The CM9 builds and Evervolv builds never really got anywhere for months. Do you guys think its worth downloading the leak now? Or would waiting be a better option? From what I heard, you have to re-root your device simply downloading the update.

There had been so many issues for me, such as getting S-Off to try and make things easier but there were errors for backing up. Instructions said if I wanted to install with S-On, I'd have to lock and unlock my phone again. How did it work out for you? I haven't even seen screenshots of this update. Is it sense 3.5?

I honestly wouldn't be too surprised if Tmo is sitting on the update to push sales for the One-S. Not that I am a marketing expert or anything, but so far the release seems very stable and I can't figure out why they are holding off on it

Yes and no is my uneducated opinion. I feel like they're update the firmware yet because the radio seems finicky. With s-off, I think that they'll just be able to update the firmware through hboot, but with s-on I think we'll need to go stock, download the update, then do the reroot process....I could be off, but in the end we'll still be ok for any updates either way.
I think that pushing One S sales definitely sounds likely.
Meanwhile, I just think T-Mobile is bad with updates and this sucks for the development community because it means less resources to help people. There are so many devices out there getting updates anyways. Its not like updating the Amaze is going to hurt their revenue either. Its just frustrating. I definitely advise against waiting for an update from T-Mobile. Definitely update now. There are already great ROMs that were made.

If you s-off ruu back to the gb ota and go to settings and check for update
1.) pics or it didnt happen
2.) this is the wrong section. this should be in the general or QA because you asked a question. the development section is for rom development.
3.) if you saw this on htc website, it still hasnt dropped

You can not... you need to wait for a zip or RUU to be able to load over a custom rom. If it is true that ICS has been released officially you can convert back to stock easy if you are S-Off and then pull down the update.

To my knowledge, we only have one dev who is sorting out the new OTA.
Allow me to quote his exact words here...
"It's not just an RUU or a simple zip file that can be restructured, rooted and posted.
It has over 200+ patch files that have to be dealt with as well, all of which are encrypted.
Including the build.prop"
So with that being said, it will take a little bit. I know he's working as fast as he can.

The DNA is an awesome phone; however, if your phone comes with the newest update from HTC on it, be aware, there is currently software-based (free) method to unlock bootloader or modify the phone at all. Users with updated phones that were not previously unlocked have had to resort to JTAG service (something like $45 plus shipping) to have the phone S-OFF'ed (Radio S-OFF - Means you can flash whatever you please (even more so with the engineering bootloader flashed)).
If the phone prompts you for an update, DON'T DO IT! If the phone is already updated, you either wait and hope for someone to find a vulnerability, pay for JTAG service, or use the phone stock (still a good phone, but no root).
Good luck!

Root/Bootloader status:
firmware 1.x - fully blown open
firmware 2.x - locked tighter that a dolphin's butthole.
It will probably come with the 2.x software. I would recommend using the JTAG service provided here:
http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/htc-droid-dna-dlx-jtag-s-off-modification-service/
Difference between a nexus and the dna... A world.
The gnex was made to open from the beginning. Running one fastboot command opened the entire floodgate, plus odin is an awesome tool for samsung devices. HTC devices have more parts that need to be cracked to have the same openess as the nexus. Right now 2.x firmware means you are running stock only (no root or anything). I'm coming from the gnex and was willing to pay for the jtag service because although I love the dev's work on this phone, I don't want to rely on them for everything.
Hope this helps.
Alright now what about things like supercid or HTC dev. Also if we can unlock the boot loader then why is s-off important. Or can we not unlock the boot loader on 2.xx

No HTCdev, no unlock of bootloader of any kind currently.
Oh okay so I read that wrong. So we can't even downgrade to a previous version or that requires root and an unlocked bootloader. Also if my device is on 2.x no root goodness for me huh?

You said what most of us think when we ponder a purchase that has to be approved by the gatekeeper/wife.
haha no comments on the women stuff i think you understand why hahaha
Like other post, i would say know that you will not have root for a bit and cm 10.1 is not done yet...but will be soon. You can go for JTAG or stick with stock or use nova launcher temporarily. The battery life is pretty decent but nothing crazy 4 hours of screen time-ish on stock. i usually get enough battery for 1 day and a few hours. Oh, fastboot will prevent a full restart of your phone so might want to disable that...and yea just look around settings. there are ways to increase battery and stuff. for example, there is a settings in wifi that allows it to auto turn off and use data unless you start using your phone. I think its a great device even through its a bit big for my taste, and i don't like stock much. Hope you enjoy your phone! I can't wait to get root and cm 10.1 on my phone. ^_^

BAD DOG! *rubs your nose in it*
Yeah I know what you vanilla gets bland for awhile. I can't get past two hours screen time on my nexus. And that's with the extended battery. At least sense is adding sprinkles and chocolate syrup to vanilla. Anyways what about face palm or whatever. Anyway my device will be here Monday thinks for the info I've only had Motorola and Samsung phones so HTC is a breath of fresh air

I don't know what it is with me but I'm honestly tired of using CM and AOSP for awhile. I've been enjoying Viper so that I can still get a breath of fresh air from Sense... even though most don't appreciate Sense. Honestly wish I could put a Sense variant on my N7 too just to change it up.

Same here. I love CM and AOSP/AOKP, but I tire of them pretty quick. I honestly don't understand the HTC Sense hate some people have. If it was that bad then everyone wouldn't be trying to find widgets that looked like the sense widgets on CM/AOSP. Sense is a really nice looking UI and their widgets are second to none.
I'm pretty much decided on sending out my DNA to be JTAG'd. How long can I expect to be without a phone? I think i'll be stuck using my rezound with just google voice.

How to soff and root?

I know moonshine is coming soon. So dont get mad but i live in a canada and the only way for me to get a dna is off ebay. I iust got my droid dna today and i was surprised to see its on software 1.15.605.4 710RD. Does that mean i can still soff? If so does anyone know how?

If I knew when Moonshine was coming or had an idea it would make things easier lol

I'd JTAG it before going to an S4. But it depends on if you bought the DNA because you like it a lot, or somehow you got stuck with something you didn't really want.

I have both and i just can't get over how much better the DNA's screen is. I made many screen color adjustments via kernel and the S4's screen just ddoesn't look right compared to the dna, plus there's this coating on the glass that seems to dull he brightness. I remember seeing it on the S3 too. As far as build quality, the S4 is nice but the dna seems premium.
I'm running Carbon rom and custom kernels on both phones. I can only tell the difference between the two by looking at he screen and the locations of the back and menu buttons (they're the opposite on each phone).
If I was faced with a choice today I would get the DNA.

After comparing the two in store I didn't feel that the DNA screen was any better. However I like the AMOLED screens. The s4 seemed snappier but not much. However the storage on the DNA bothers me and I prefer a removable battery.
I'll probably wait another 2 weeks and then decide. I may hold off on the s4 for the Note 3 or the upcoming HTC phablet. I would like a bigger screen. If the HTC One was 5" I would have probably already bought it.

Yeah just saw that!!!! Should tide me over for a while haha.
Sorry to awaken an old thread, I'm still on 1.15.605.4 stock rooted rom, htcdev unlocked. In order to s off and check out some of the sense 5 ROMs do I need to upgrade then use moonshine? Just use face palm from where I am now? Is one better then the other? Do I need to be on new firmware to try new ROMs? Sorry I used to be all over this with my Incredible and Rezound but loved the DNA out of the box and never tweaked.
Thanks in advance.

No just find and use the old facepalm method
And as for updating firmware it's always a good idea that way you don't experience any signal issues
