My SGS2 internally imploded this morning (or something like that) - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I plugged my eleven-day-old Galaxy S II up last night to the Samsung charger connected to the Samsung AC adapter that came with it. I then put it underneath the pillow beside me (not the pillow I sleep on; I do this so that I don't knock it off during the night) and went to bed. When I went to grab it this morning, the phone pretty much burnt my hand. I dropped it quickly and let it cool down for a moment. I had no success with turning it on and, when I got back from school, still had no luck. I ended up taking it back and exchanging it for another one.
It really doesn't bother me that much considering the volume up button on the other one stuck a little. And now I can't get CWM to flash on this one. It seems like nothing is going right for me today.

Woah!!
Definitely gotta be careful with that. These phones do need to breathe in a sense but glad it wasn't worse and you were able to return it. I bet you won't do that one again.

Yeah, definitely do not charge any electronic device while under a pillow because charging generates heat and there is no way for the heat to escape while it's under a pillow, so it builds up. As for flashing CWM, what happens when you use odin?
Sent from my SGS II.

The exact same thing happened to me w a NS4G, never again.

That happen to me but not to that extent, i did it all the time with other phones but I guess I should avoid doing that from now on.

It happened to me a couple of times with different phones. I think when I checked the temp it was like 127F lol

By far this phone is the hottest device i have. The thin profile of the phone can't really dissipate the heat that well. But anyway sorry to hear this about your phone. Good luck with fixing things.

I actually was able to flash CWM. For some reason it just wouldn't allow me to do it from ROM Manager. But all is good now.

**** man im glad your bed didn't catch fire. That would have ruined your morning.

Don't use Rom Manager on our phones.

Sounds like a faulty battery pack or charging hardware in the phone - for safety reasons, charging of Li-Ion batteries is suspended if the pack reaches 50C (122F) or less. It sounds like either your pack has a faulty temp sensor or your phone did not terminate charge when the temp rose too high. (I assume that Samsung has such termination circuitry onboard as they would never receive certifications otherwise). You are very lucky, as Li-Ion batteries have a propensity for exploding/catching on fire when overheated during charge.

I think Im going to run an auto-script that looks for people saying they use Rom Manager (or try to use it because it sucks and never works right) and then give them an automatic infraction.

Just weed out any cm7 threads though as it works perfectly. I understand your point though.
Also when we first got these phones and this issue came up i was able to get it to work with the samsung based roms and made a video to show how. Feel free to delete it if you want to. Dont want people to get confused...

Damn USB issues........again!

So I know there are several threads on this, some by me, but this time the issue is very weird.
So i'm on my third phone now, previous 2 had the USB port going wacky. Phone thinking it was charging when it wasn't plugged in, computer not recognizing phone anymore etc.
So problem has now started again on phone number three. Weird thing is this time the phone seems to not have this problem all day. Problem starts at night, so i'm assuming maybe a battery percentage left triggers it. The other weird aspect of this is that right before the phone starts bugging out, (charging, uncharging, and back, over and over while not plugged in), the car mode symbol appears in the status bar, and starts flashing on and off. If I am fast enough to catch it,I can deactivate car mode. When all this starts happening, phone also starts to get stuck and freezes up. This issue is really getting annoying. Love this phone but this is starting to make me crazy. Yes I got the phones at different stores. What do I uninstall to just get rid of car mode, considering I never use it?

Seems to be whatever USB cable you are using or the way you carry this phone is the problem. No way you get 3 phones the same exact problem in a row. FYI, Samsung Focus and Captivate had the similar problem in the past. Car mode is just the result of your USB port problem instead of the cause of it. What happens is something shorted out or bridged the pins of the USB port to make the phone think it is conneted to a car dock (IIRC, car dock uses a 300k resistor to bridge two pins). Some ppl with Focus or Captivate reported success by blowing out the dirt in the USB port.
As well as cleaning the USB port with an alcohol swab

The only USB cable I've used with all of them is the one they come with. I've used the alcohol cleaning method as well as blowing in the port, hopefully getting out any thing causing issue. This seems to help temporarily. The strangest part of all this to me is with this latest phone, I have zero problems all day. When I lay down in bed for the night and start using the phone is when it starts to happen. My battery life can range from 60%-30% at that time, so I don't know if that is a connection to this issue. Maybe the phone is possessed. It always seems to take about 2-3 weeks for this problem to arise. I always have the phone in my pocket, so I guess something must be happening with that. Luckily with this latest one, I bought the best buy insurance, it's just after awhile they're gonna start wondering why this keeps happening to me, and if it's my fault. The USB port problems can sometimes make it difficult/impossible to flash back to stock.

Useless responses are no better than useless threads imo.
To the OP. The likelihood of that many bad phones in a row with the exact same problem is pretty rare. Take a look at anything that's remained consistent through all the phones, and try replacing that item(s).

+1 for replacing the cord and power brick. Alot less quality is put into them compared to the phone. Just make sure not to buy cheap. And never plug your phone into anything cheap (i.e. car radio usb port, off brand charger, ect) That's not saying everything else is bad. But why risk it. Especially when you can buy brand name chargers off ebay for $5 or less.

I've only used the supplied USB cord, every time. Now even when my phone isn't confused if it's charging or not, the battery life is now awful. 5-6% per hour drain. Used to be 1-2%. No changes made by me. Also the phone has become super laggy at times. Feel like i'm using my cappy again. My apologies for starting this post. I knew I would most likely get crap for it, but my issue is very strange, IMO, compared to mine and others previous experiences. I also figured if I added to an old post, it would go unnoticed.

If he is getting 5% per hour drain at idle, yes that is horrible battery life. SGS2 is fairly easily capable of 1% per hour idle drain.

You've used the same cord with all 3? or a new cord with each one?
It sounds like you've got a boatload of issues going on. Personally i'd do a wipe and try a fresh install without installing any additional stuff to be sure the hardware is fine.. Once you've verified that start adding apps to see if it was a specific one causing the issue. (there's other ways to troubleshoot this, but a fresh wipe is the most straight forward and simple IMO)

i suppose.
However he said before it was 1-2 percent an hour. That's pretty much impossible while being used, only get numbers like that while not in use (idle). Even %5 an hour while being used isn't likely to happen. Guess i just figured it had to be in ref to idle drain.
lol guess we just wait to see

hot potato phone

During the night, my phone got soo hot, I could not even touch it. It was charging while this happened and I think it happened because the phone went under the pillow and did not have proper ventilation. When I noticed I unplugged the charger and took out the battery. After it cooled I tried turning on the phone, it initially went to the charging icon then turned off and I can't get it to turn.on. CAN ANYONE HELP??
I wouldn't mind going to ATT and getting another one but its rooted. Do you think I would be ok to return it with out them finding out? I can't get to recovery mode to flash to stock.
I tried searching for the answer..couldn't find one, most people were able to turn theirs on.
Plug in your usb cable to your computer and hold the volume buttons (aka get into download mode), leave your phone on there for a couple hours to charge and then proceed to boot normally. Hopefully this works for you, if not, buy a new battery from Amazon (needs NFC, preferably Samsung OEM). I would suggest getting this http://www.amazon.com/Samsung--CGPK...UEE0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1327948609&sr=8-1 so you will be able to charge your other battery if you are not able to charge it through download mode.(includes an extra battery too)
Hey thanks for the advice, I'll try this when I get home...say hypothetically it doesn't work...and it can't be.saved.and turned on...could the warranty department tell if I have.voided my warranty by rooting it?
If you tripped the flash counter, possibly, but I've read that most stores don't check it anyways and just get you a replacement.

I was thinking the same thing. I thought it was the same thread, then I thought the guy just copied and pasted the other guy.
On topic... just let the phone cool down, and then see if it works. If it does, good. If not, try ATT and they should accept it. They can't find out you rooted it if the phone doesnt work.
Off topic- a friend of mine took the shell of an iPod touch And put quarters in it for weight, and returned it.
You need to wait a while when you charge the phone before booting it up, the phone needs some time to get enough power to turn itself on without turning off immediately.
after the battery cools down, it should still work, hopefully you won't need a new battery

I can tell you why Mr. Smarty Pants.
Back in the days before smartphone existed they phones did not get this hot. So, when an unsuspecting customer gets a new dual core heating pad they have no clue that they generate this much heat thus using their past charging habits ala under a pillow.

Phone placed under pillow is understandable but phone is under pillow while charging is just odd. You run a power cord under the pillow too?
I think the main question is why is his device getting that hot while charging? Will putting it under a pillow really cause it to heat up that much? Also doesn't the phone have a thermometer in it and auto shut down when it gets too hot?

[Q] Completely dead S2, no response to anything, warranty issues?

I had the phone on and in my hand when it just flickered off. I was in a 3d game but had only been running it for a couple minutes. The battery was reading about 90% before I fired up the game and it was plugged in to a factory samsung charger at the time. The game sort of stuttered a second or so before it shut down, then blank screen and it looked dead. It was slightly warm at the time, but nothing near overheating.
I held down the power button, nothing.
Tried power/volume combinations with no result.
Pried it out of the otterbox case it has been in since I got it and pulled the battery and put it back in, still nothing.
Pulled MicroSD and sim card.
Tried both volumes and plugging it in to USB with and without a battery, nada.
Left it alone and researched online for a bit, battery back in and nothing.
Plugged into a different charger and still nothing.
Seems no matter what I try, no response at all.
Both the phone and battery are cooled off at this point.
Could this be dead battery? Am I going about trying to force it to at least light up without a battery correctly?
At this point I'm at a loss. I can check the local AT&T store and see if they can at least let me test a different battery.
Last night I did flash the latest SHOstock 5.4 ROM, up from his 5.2. The phone ran fine afterward and I shut it down once since the flash without issues. This phone has been rock solid since day one, never dropped, no water damage, always in a case, pristine condition physically. Nothing to cause any trauma. Never even overclocked, but did have it running .25v undervolted at all speeds for a while.
I bought this last November, so it is less than a year old. Insurance is being paid but it is also within one year of purchase. So warranty should still be in effect? However, if it is this dead I can't flash it back to stock for warranty return, so what are my options there? Call it in as a warranty claim and hope for the best?
Edit: just tested the battery with a voltmeter. It is reading 4.1V, not sure if that is too high for a battery that is rated 3.7V or not. I'd guess no, so bad battery theory is likely out, unless it cooked the phone.
<edit> and I'm so frazzled from my beloved phone dying that I posted this to general instead of Q&A. argh.
I wouldn't rule out battery failure. Batteries don't power devices with voltage, and that voltage will only be discernible as an indicator for a very short period of time before it actually dies. You'll need a battery tester to check its actual amperage output, and I'd recommend looking up what it should be, along with its amp hour rating. Wish I had more to offer, but I work with dc backup powered systems, and they're a pain in the ass to catch with a voltmeter.
I777 gets it done, gnex just for fun
Yeah I know what you mean. I once had a car battery fail, read about 12V just fine but didn't put out enough miliamps to power even the dome light.
Taking lunch right now and headed to the retail store in town to see if they have a battery I can swap to test. More worried that I can't return to stock, really can't afford a $400 bill to replace this sucker if they catch that I've flashed it.
Had to drive an hour to the AT&T Device Support Center but its replaced now. I think the tech there was a bit surprised at how dead it was. He was figuring to just run his recovery tools and fix it right up, but got nothing.

After I got EnergyROM on my Tokyo the software worked as well as could be expected for WinMo. I also had a pretty much fully functional Froyo Android running off the SD card. The microphone finally died on it though, and the cost to replace out of warranty was more than I spent on the GS2.
I forgot how nice having a keyboard was though. Faster and more accurate typing plus you can still see the whole screen. Maybe that captivate glide wouldn't be so bad after all... Lol

Question about whether the Note 2 Battery

This weekend, in my drunken stupor I somehow managed to lose my battery for my Note 2. I don't really know how it happened since the next morning I had my phone with my case on it but no battery. I tried plugging my phone into the charger to see if it could turn on without a battery source as power but it wouldn't boot at all. So i'm wondering does this phone have to have a battery in it to turn on or is my phone broken in that even if I buy a new battery it probably won't turn on? Can someone please remove their battery then plug their phone into the charger to see if they can turn it on without the battery installed? If so then hopefully all I have to do is get a new battery. I've never had electronics before that can't start while plugged into the wall so I'm worried about my phone being broken.
Just tried it and no it does not turn on without the battery.... But i did get a small red flicker of a light from the proximity sensor when I plugged it in. Not sure if that's even relevant.

Lol I love those drunken nights where random stuff happens that can never be explained.
Haha the real story is much longer but I figure i'll tell it since I've got the time. I'm a senior at University right now and my school's located almost in the middle of nowhere. I was drinking with some friends Thursday night and we decided to walk to another friend's house about a mile and a half away because he was having a party. After many drinking games and activities my friends decided it was time to leave but I wanted to stay a bit longer so I did. For some reason or another, when I drink, I try to invent new short cuts home that end up taking me in the opposite direction of where I intend to go. So that night I decided it'd be quicker getting home if I took a detour through the woods. At this point in the night I was black out drunk and don't exactly remember much of this but have pieced together information from things I've heard from various people. I ended up leaving the party and going through the woods and I don't remember how or where I went but somehow I got lost. I regained my memory shortly after and discovered myself in a dark forest near a small road with what I thought was a dead cell phone. (actually the battery was missing :silly I then spent the next 4 hours stumbling around in the woods trying to find my way home. I ended up falling down a lot because my school is in the mountains and the terrain is quite hilly and the thorns everywhere ended up cutting me up to the point where I looked like I had lost a fight with Wolverine. At one point while I was wondering I heard howling in the distance and started to quicken my pace. Then about 30 minutes later I heard more howling only the sound was no more than 200 yards away. Luckily I didn't encounter any wolves or coyotes and I somehow made it back to my place at 5:00 in the morning. Overall I would agree it was a good night other than me discovering my battery was missing in the morning....
tl;dr I got very drunk, wandered into the woods for 4 hours and somehow lost my Note 2's battery in the process...

Bricked HTC One

So my phone died.
Not by flashing. Not by rooting. Not by anything. I plugged it in on thursday with about 3% battery remaining, and next thing I know I am late for class because the phone died in middle of the night sometime. I was running a CM10.1 nightly. It was buttery smooth and honestly felt better for the phone than sense did. So I had no quarrel.
Now it wont boot, no LED, no capacitive buttons, no adb, no recognition, no nothing. I assume myself as a veteran of android and its capabilities (including how incredibly difficult one actually is to brick) and I have never seen something like this.
If your phone has done this, say so.
I want to hear stories and isolate the incident. If you have any ideas, share them.
Im a little ticked because I really liked this phone and its a ****ty way to have it go.
Stab in the dark but could it possibly be dead and your charger didn't charge it. Never heard of a situation like this and I've done some strange things to my phones. Possible or battery is so dead is why u can't power up. Try a different charger on it for a couple hours and try again.
Edit, when u have it plugged in to a charger does the led glow red ?

This should be posted in Q&A but here you go

SOLVED: Phone refuses to power on
Its probably your charger

Not the charger. I've tried all cables in the house.
Some how your not getting juice I'd just keep it plugged into a different one for a couple hours. Is there any way it could have gotten wet? Sucks if its bricked

Never heard of something like this.. hope it isn't actually bricked man. Good luck!

But have you tried another charger?
Cable does not equal charger.
You can't count on an aftermarket charger or cable either. I've seen strange things with stuff that didn't come with the phone.

I actually had the same thing happen to my Galaxy Note I. It just died completely one day when it was sitting on my desk with no previous issues. But it was already year old by that time.
I hope it works out. Since it's a new phone, at least you've got the warranty.
other people have posted about this issue in the international thread. but as far as i know after letting it charge a while they all came back on and they all said no charging light when plugged in
a lot of the people with this problem were also running cm10.1
