[Q] Completely dead S2, no response to anything, warranty issues? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I had the phone on and in my hand when it just flickered off. I was in a 3d game but had only been running it for a couple minutes. The battery was reading about 90% before I fired up the game and it was plugged in to a factory samsung charger at the time. The game sort of stuttered a second or so before it shut down, then blank screen and it looked dead. It was slightly warm at the time, but nothing near overheating.
I held down the power button, nothing.
Tried power/volume combinations with no result.
Pried it out of the otterbox case it has been in since I got it and pulled the battery and put it back in, still nothing.
Pulled MicroSD and sim card.
Tried both volumes and plugging it in to USB with and without a battery, nada.
Left it alone and researched online for a bit, battery back in and nothing.
Plugged into a different charger and still nothing.
Seems no matter what I try, no response at all.
Both the phone and battery are cooled off at this point.
Could this be dead battery? Am I going about trying to force it to at least light up without a battery correctly?
At this point I'm at a loss. I can check the local AT&T store and see if they can at least let me test a different battery.
Last night I did flash the latest SHOstock 5.4 ROM, up from his 5.2. The phone ran fine afterward and I shut it down once since the flash without issues. This phone has been rock solid since day one, never dropped, no water damage, always in a case, pristine condition physically. Nothing to cause any trauma. Never even overclocked, but did have it running .25v undervolted at all speeds for a while.
I bought this last November, so it is less than a year old. Insurance is being paid but it is also within one year of purchase. So warranty should still be in effect? However, if it is this dead I can't flash it back to stock for warranty return, so what are my options there? Call it in as a warranty claim and hope for the best?
Edit: just tested the battery with a voltmeter. It is reading 4.1V, not sure if that is too high for a battery that is rated 3.7V or not. I'd guess no, so bad battery theory is likely out, unless it cooked the phone.
<edit> and I'm so frazzled from my beloved phone dying that I posted this to general instead of Q&A. argh.

I wouldn't rule out battery failure. Batteries don't power devices with voltage, and that voltage will only be discernible as an indicator for a very short period of time before it actually dies. You'll need a battery tester to check its actual amperage output, and I'd recommend looking up what it should be, along with its amp hour rating. Wish I had more to offer, but I work with dc backup powered systems, and they're a pain in the ass to catch with a voltmeter.
I777 gets it done, gnex just for fun

Yeah I know what you mean. I once had a car battery fail, read about 12V just fine but didn't put out enough miliamps to power even the dome light.
Taking lunch right now and headed to the retail store in town to see if they have a battery I can swap to test. More worried that I can't return to stock, really can't afford a $400 bill to replace this sucker if they catch that I've flashed it.

Had to drive an hour to the AT&T Device Support Center but its replaced now. I think the tech there was a bit surprised at how dead it was. He was figuring to just run his recovery tools and fix it right up, but got nothing.
Oh well, at least I'm not stuck on my old Tilt 2 running WinMo anymore. Though I do miss my keyboard a little bit.

Why has this been happening to the S2's a lot? It seems like it anyway. Mine went through something crazy a couple of days ago where it wouldn't turn on and it was soft bricked.

I really miss my old Tilt2.

I don't, man with stock software that thing was ****, I needed 5 different replacements all for different problems. The keyboard was amazing though.
Sent from Team Pirate! Using Tapatalk 2

After I got EnergyROM on my Tokyo the software worked as well as could be expected for WinMo. I also had a pretty much fully functional Froyo Android running off the SD card. The microphone finally died on it though, and the cost to replace out of warranty was more than I spent on the GS2.
I forgot how nice having a keyboard was though. Faster and more accurate typing plus you can still see the whole screen. Maybe that captivate glide wouldn't be so bad after all... Lol

Well I didn't have my for long. I guess 2 ro 3 months. Went to jumpstart a car & had it charging. It killed the screen. Never do that. I loved the keypad. It was awesome.

EVO 3D will not power up

Any ideas?
I was in TWRP at the main menu, instead of clicking power off, I pulled the battery to replace the sd card with another. Now it will not power up, when I plug it in..no red light?
Thanks in advance...Jim

See if you have any luck trying to boot without an sd card in there. Also, try holding down on the power button for at least ten seconds

holding power button for 20 seconds doesn't do anything.
Let it charge for about 10-20 minutes then try again

This happened to me about a week ago. Charging it was what fixed it.
If charge it doesn't fix go to a sprint store and let them charged the battery the did the trick for.my EVO 4G once the happened, for.some reason the battery seems dead when is nor really dead
MGS on my iPad
Maybe check the battery connectors dood. I know some htc models have problems with those.
Coz i just saw it in 3D with the Shooter!
mines not powering up either.. Never turned it off, woke up this morning & it was off. Not powering up. been on charger all night
happens all the time to me. i know its a flaw, but ive learned to NEVER let my battery go all the way dead. If i see it get around 5-10% ill just put in on airplane mode til i can get to a charger. Also if you battery is very low, turning it off or pulling the battery will cause it to get an attidude and not turn back on for 15-20 min
Yeah, I have been having lots of "attitude" from my battery or power button or on/off code or whatever is making these things not want to power on reliably.... Not to mention the random charge-light-on-wont-turn-on antics. Has been happening more and more frequently and nothing i do works reliably so I just try them all until one works.
I can't have this. This morning I woke up to a locked phone, screen off, green light on, won't turn on.... And totally dead battery while plugged in? Good thing my nook is so reliable as an alarm clock or I might have been in deep **** at work.
It's not the rom or kernel... I've tested everything. I think it's deeper than that. I might not be able to wait for the nexus-prime.... Sgs2 might have to do.

I've seen a lot of these posts. I usually never let mine get in the amber even but I recently flashed viper rom so i wanted to do a battery calibration...meaning..reset stats from full charge..then use it till it dies. After reading these posts I realized mine hadnt died on me any yet. After 16 hours of heavy abuse (12 hours of normal music streaming, calls, text, web surfing etc...and 4 hours of just playing youtube video's with all radio's on trying to kill the damn thing) it finally croaked. Worked just fine though.
Maybe something to do with certain shipments. I've seen a lot of posts on htis but no one ever puts out a batch number or anything. Perhaps all the ones having issues came from a similar batch...and have some designation of affiliation with said batch. Just a though..if we could discover some trend in this...perhaps they'd consider acknowledging it and helping users with issues...or at least help new comers to the thread avoid particular troublesome ones.

i think it has something to do with the non HTC s-off method. But im right with you. As soon as Sprint releases the s2 this 3D is going straight to ebay. I love it, but the signal weakness and power problems are MAJOR things that I cant take much longer

It did this before I did s-off.... Admittedly not as much, but it also hadn't done it any more afterwards.... Until a week or so ago, and it just seems to be getting worse. I have an unmodified eng hboot and radio, I doubt that there are remnants of revolutionary that would get progressively worse over time....but I have no idea honestly.

Agreed. I stopped into my local radio Shack two days before release to play with their demo unit.... Turned on... Played with 3D... Turned off... Never came back on again, ever. Tried everything.

AWFUL signal strength. actually, worse Ive ever had on a phone.
my EVO never came back. I was at 60% batt life when I put on charge last night & was dead ass hell this morning.. no life at at.. Sprint tech took it apart it said the phone apears like new, just lifeless. swapped battery with 3 others, no good. So I figured it would be a long shot but I took it back to the store I got it from 36 days ago.. & Explained what happen.. Swapped me out with another one right then & there!..
BTW this is my 5th NEW Evo3D. thats sad...

My SGS2 internally imploded this morning (or something like that)

I plugged my eleven-day-old Galaxy S II up last night to the Samsung charger connected to the Samsung AC adapter that came with it. I then put it underneath the pillow beside me (not the pillow I sleep on; I do this so that I don't knock it off during the night) and went to bed. When I went to grab it this morning, the phone pretty much burnt my hand. I dropped it quickly and let it cool down for a moment. I had no success with turning it on and, when I got back from school, still had no luck. I ended up taking it back and exchanging it for another one.
It really doesn't bother me that much considering the volume up button on the other one stuck a little. And now I can't get CWM to flash on this one. It seems like nothing is going right for me today.
Woah!!
Definitely gotta be careful with that. These phones do need to breathe in a sense but glad it wasn't worse and you were able to return it. I bet you won't do that one again.
Yeah, definitely do not charge any electronic device while under a pillow because charging generates heat and there is no way for the heat to escape while it's under a pillow, so it builds up. As for flashing CWM, what happens when you use odin?
Sent from my SGS II.
The exact same thing happened to me w a NS4G, never again.
That happen to me but not to that extent, i did it all the time with other phones but I guess I should avoid doing that from now on.
It happened to me a couple of times with different phones. I think when I checked the temp it was like 127F lol
By far this phone is the hottest device i have. The thin profile of the phone can't really dissipate the heat that well. But anyway sorry to hear this about your phone. Good luck with fixing things.

Sounds like a faulty battery pack or charging hardware in the phone - for safety reasons, charging of Li-Ion batteries is suspended if the pack reaches 50C (122F) or less. It sounds like either your pack has a faulty temp sensor or your phone did not terminate charge when the temp rose too high. (I assume that Samsung has such termination circuitry onboard as they would never receive certifications otherwise). You are very lucky, as Li-Ion batteries have a propensity for exploding/catching on fire when overheated during charge.
T
I think Im going to run an auto-script that looks for people saying they use Rom Manager (or try to use it because it sucks and never works right) and then give them an automatic infraction.

I left mine under the pillow one night - woke up the next morning and was wondering why "This thing is HOT!". It wasn't ruined but I never leave it under the pillow charging anymore. This is why they made night stands LOL.

Just got the Gnote - Awesome but got some major/minor issues already

Hi all,
I'm gonna make this quick
I just got the note about 2 hours ago from Best Buy. The bestbuy guy setup everything for me so I got to play with it while walking to the mall with my wife.
I noticed some few things already which gives me concern .. so here goes:
1) (Major Concern) The phone is warm/hot. I've used my friends SGS2 before for two hours straight and it didn't get warm. My Gnote, however, after playing with it for 15 mins, I noticed it getting highly warm. I put it to my pant pocket and I noticed heat from my legs (that's how warm it was).
2) (Minor Concern) As soon as the Best Buy guy handed me the phone, I've played with it for maybe 1.5 hours total (on and off and not straight 1.5 hours). It was 50% when the guy handed it over to me, now the phone is almost dead 10%. So I used the phone for 1.5 hours (actually maybe less) and it took 40% already. I just thought it was in factory charge and I think it is normal. I'll do further investigation after a full charge.
3) (Major Concern) So now that I have low battery, I charged my phone using the charger that came with it. It does not charge! I've tried a different wall outlet and it still does not work. The cables are all good and there are no loose stuff. However, I tried to, unplug - replug afte 1 sec - unplug - replug .. and I did it for about 10 times and it worked - charged it for 5 mins. Unplug then replug and it won't charge again. I had to do the unplug replug routine to make it work again. I plug it to my Computer and .. bam .. 1 second it charges. I think I got a faulty charger here.
4) (Minor Concern) The free case is ugly .. lol
So is the warmth that the phone emits is normal? Again, I wouldn't consider it hot. It feels like you are sick with a fever kinda thing.
Please let me know if you have the same experience as I may got a bad batch.
Thanks!
I think you might have a bad battery dude. You should go back to best buy and get them to replace the battery. Getting warm is normal, getting hot is not.

Also...you can use any usb charger to charge your note, as long as it has the micro usb plug that goes into the note (standard micro usb). It may not be "optimal" to use anything other than the provided type, but they will work. I've used iPhone chargers to charge my samsung phones in the past. At the very least, that would allow you to rule out the charger.
Thanks for the tip
But I have an update. I actually had it charged for 45 mins .. then I tried to unplug it .. and replug it. Now the charger is working already. I multiple different outlets and it is now working. Maybe it was just an initial fluke .. but still that concerns me why it happened.
Anyway, with regards to warmth/heat ... I don't think that the battery is the one causing this heat. The warm area is concentrated around the 8 megapixel camera lens. Not where the battery is placed (lower part of the note). Does anybody know where the Snapdragon processor is placed in the device? Is it close to the rear camera?
Thanks
EDIT: Another Minor Concern: It did not come with earbud headset phones. Is it normal like that?
Battery is going to be bad until you go through a couple cycles battery life.
Yes. Getting warm after using it constantly for more than several minutes is normal, especially when watching video or gaming. It should never get hot but it will get warm. It will get even warmer if it has a case on.

Yup, I was watching twitch.tv (starcraft live stream - flash based) and that is when I felt warmth but even after ending it .. it took a very long time to cool it down (maybe 15 mins).
I'll observe it a little bit more. Should I leave it charged overnight?
Just use it like every other phone you have owned

The heat is most likely concentrated there because the camera sensor is glass and metal, therefore transferring heat more quickly than the plastic back to your fingers. I've had a similar problem with my infuse.

My note is not charging properly... Help?

I have owned the phone for just over two weeks and recently it started doing this thing where it does not charge properly when the oem charger or any other samsung use chargers that I own are inserted.
Sometimes re-inserting the charger a bunch of times gets it going. Sometimes you insert the charger and it starts going, then flip flops back and forth between charging and not charging.
The first time this happened I had to let it die completely before it would take a charge.
This is extremely frustrating. Does anyone have any advice? Is this a software or hardware issue? I have cleaned out both the cords and the ports and I don't belive I would have damaged them in any way. Any advice would help.
Thank you.

If you jiggle the cable around, is there any sweet spot where it charges properly? My Thunderbolt does this too, and I found with mine if you force the cable towards one side it will always work.
I've had this happen to mine a few times as well. Would just stick somewhere and doesn't want to charge anymore. I saw a possible fix for it somewhere online, I believe they were talking about the S2 not charging, and he did some combination of pulling the battery out, plugging it in, then putting the battery back in and turning it on. I can't remember exactly but you might search it and see if you can find it. It fixed it for a lot of people, but it seems to be intermittent, and more than anything I've attributed it to the cord. It doesn't sit very well, and one of the times it happened, the plug wasn't all the way into the wall. I actually just had it happen this morning where I was stuck at 95 percent, and I just rebooted and now it's going back up again.
I also have issues where the screen goes black (SOD) and won't come back on without a battery pull. Again, very intermittent and I'm trying to pinpoint the cause, because it happened more often when I was on 240 DPI, and when I was messing with the kernel cpu. I'm actually underclocked now on Perseus to 1.3 on the 5g profile, and running smoothly ever since(2 full days of same setup and no issues)
The other variables I've noticed when I get the SOD, is it's usually when my battery is lower, and I might still have radios on, such as Bluetooth, but nothing paired.
Sent from my unlocked & underclocked Note 2
Yeah I think it might have something to do with the female end on the phone being so recessed from the plastic housing. Either way this is annoying me and I don't want my phone acting like this even if it is intermittent. I will start looking into a warranty replacement.
I bought the phone off contract, does anyone know if the return policy for an off contract phone is any different than the typical Verizon 14 days?

Bricked HTC One

So my phone died.
Not by flashing. Not by rooting. Not by anything. I plugged it in on thursday with about 3% battery remaining, and next thing I know I am late for class because the phone died in middle of the night sometime. I was running a CM10.1 nightly. It was buttery smooth and honestly felt better for the phone than sense did. So I had no quarrel.
Now it wont boot, no LED, no capacitive buttons, no adb, no recognition, no nothing. I assume myself as a veteran of android and its capabilities (including how incredibly difficult one actually is to brick) and I have never seen something like this.
If your phone has done this, say so.
I want to hear stories and isolate the incident. If you have any ideas, share them.
Im a little ticked because I really liked this phone and its a ****ty way to have it go.
Stab in the dark but could it possibly be dead and your charger didn't charge it. Never heard of a situation like this and I've done some strange things to my phones. Possible or battery is so dead is why u can't power up. Try a different charger on it for a couple hours and try again.
Edit, when u have it plugged in to a charger does the led glow red ?

You can't count on an aftermarket charger or cable either. I've seen strange things with stuff that didn't come with the phone.
