New 5.0 - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

Just got the 5.0 for $209 to replace my ipod touch and rid myself completely of apple products!
Was wondering how/if this would ever be updated to ICS. Would it have to be through the Samsung sofware, KIES, or whatever its called?

for now ...
Preferably yes

i highly doubt samsung will update the players to ics. but depending on how this community goes, and how many people buy the device we might see a unofficial port of ics. cm9 maybe.

Hi guys! What you think? Is it possible to bring new Android into SGS2?
I was watching at Hong Kong conference. So I'm excited. Probably I'll buy new phone - Galaxy Nexus. So what's your opinion? Is it possible? I'm noob .
Very possible. Google Nexus is not that much of a hardware leap from the SGS2. It will come to the SII

watched the event myself as well... Not too much impressed tho... Its coming on verizon for now.
Give it time… you'll see a ROM or two out by Thanksgiving IMO. The sdk has been released, and once the Nexus hits the market, and a system dump is "in the wild", devs will cook ROMs like crazy!

doop - I think so after week it will be new rom here.
ceo.mtcl - Why? It looks phenomenal!
jjhiza - I agree with you
Is ICS's native GUI hardware accelerated by GPU?? From the demo, it doesn't seems perfectly smooth to me. Although Android 3.x was promoted as hardware accelerated GUI, I still find it very laggy scrolling through the homepages when there are some widgets. Putting it besides iPads, it's really a negative to Android.
Not supposed to say this maybe, but I'm underwhelmed by the UI in ICS. Had the same feeling about much of Honeycomb, really.
The UI is looking more and more Metro-like and ultra minimalist to the point of absurdity with every iteration. :shudder:
Flame away, but Gingerbread looks far better to me aesthetically. Give me the under the hood fixes, better multiprocessor support, etc. , but leave what works alone, IMO. If I wanted a Win-doze phone 7 device, I'd buy one.

9 months.
No but really that's a question only Samsung can answer. We have the SDK but we need a system dump and even then who knows what hurdles we have to jump to get it to function properly.
Just keep an eye on various development sections.

Earlier with cyanogenmod I would say And I am not looking for anything else because ics will be gimped to death by touchwiz
Okay, so we've already seen Ice Cream Sandwich running on the Nexus S, but that was decidedly... unofficial. We've just heard straight from Google's Gabe Cohen that the Nexus S will definitely be getting ICS. In fact, both he and Matias Duarte think most Gingerbread devices will see an upgrade, saying: "Currently in the process for releasing Ice Cream Sandwich for Nexus S. Theoretically should work for any 2.3 device." It's hardly a surprise and there's no specific word on timing just yet, but hopefully it won't take long to move that vanilla Android device up to something with a breaded exterior.
I guess that would be a yes, I can't see Samsung not updating a hugely popular handset (which has yet to have a real update) but I can not see them doing it anytime soon unless they drop the 2.3.5 update like they did with 2.3.4 to look at ICS.
As you know for Google phones it's immediately but for other brand it takes some time. Personally I think it will be after 3 or more months for official Samsung ROM.
They'll want to sell Galaxy Nexus for Christmas, but I don't expect Samsung to release for the SGS2 until New Year.

ARE YOU SERIOUS? 9 months? In 9 months Samsung ships Galaxy S4 with Android 5.0...
But system dump of Galaxy S2 or Galaxy Nexus?
Have we have to wait the Samsung official 4.0 firmware for S2?
Android 2.3.5 was out on July and Samsung official 2.3.5 for S2 was out in October... It takes 3 months, pheraps 4 monts, not 9...
<rumour>SGS2 will get ICS faster than you think. </rumour>
what can we do with the system dump that has been posted?

Of course it will kids...as soon as this stuff is out in the wild there'll be buggy stuff, and then good stuff. Wasn't the firmware for the SGS2 out before the phone was?

[Q] any hope for an ics update?

So, do you think samsung will ever update these devices to ice cream sandwich? Would anyone care enough to try to make a port? I don't have this device yet but I plan to get the 5 inch one for christmas and no ice cream sandwich won't stop me from getting it but I was just curious. Thanks!
I honestly don't expect Samsung to update these to ICS(but here's to hoping). We may see a port sometime though(I'm personally waiting for someone to port cyanogenmod to it, so that I can do some work with porting)
nyanyan: you might check your time zone setting here, your clock looks off.

Actually, on my side, it doesn't look off at all...
I hope someone makes a port for this right now I'm using a Ice Cream Launcher instead of the built in Launcher.
Not to get off the topic too much...but does anyone know specific time frame Sammy will update the players so we can access Media Hub?
last i read there would be an "update in the future"....boo!
Curious, I don't have a Samsung TV (but may buy one soon), how is "Media Hub" different than "Smart View" (that's on these players)?
ICS?
I hope someone makes a port for this right now. Anyone had news?
5" with ICS ..
I bought one and this is very great but ICS is cooool...
Samsung G.Wifi + 1ghz + 5" + ICS.. =

Actually I don't have high hopes for ICS. The "Y" in the device name YP-G70 means "(Young) – These are entry models or strategic models for emerging markets or a younger audience more sensitive to price."
See more about the naming scheme here http://www.androidguys.com/2011/08/24/samsung-debuts-galaxy-products-naming-convention-eve-ifa/ .
I think Samsung will put their ICS effort on other "high-end" devices first.

The YP series existed a long time ago as YEPP (young, energetic, passionate, person)because it is the model code for the mp3 players for samsung. it is not obligated to be a young audience. Take the samsung p3 for exemple (YP-P3) which is released in 2007 or 2008 (way before the article.) I think they will maybe release it if they release it to the original galaxy s (they have the same hardware capabilities.)Otherwise we can always wait for some custom roms. (CM9 ) And I want to know why people prefer 5.0 to the 4.0? (There's not enough talk about the 4.0 as I have one.)
media hub is the acess point for movies, tv shows, etc for samsung mobile devices...i have several movies and shows i would love to watch on the player while traveling but i dont think we have access yet without an OTA.

I agree! I mean, I would think the 4" would be more popular, since it can easily fit in pocket, but the screen is still plenty big!
Really too bad because I have a feeling all development towards roms is going to go to the 5.0, and not the 4.0 (not sure if a 5.0 rom would work on a 4.0).
Concerning ICS, kinda doubt it since it took them almost a year to update it to gingerbread!
Of course, maybe they will, but by that time, jellybean will be the new kid on the block, lol!

I bought the 5.0 because it is pretty much the biggest possible size that I can still hold it with one hand. If you are commuting on train STANDING, you need to grab the hand rail using the other hand. Galaxy tab or iPad are way too big to use this way. For me, 4.0 is too small, I may just go with some newer super phone with 4 inch+ screen. Actually the new Galaxy Note is interesting.

As I said there's always the option for the custom rom but as you said all the developpement will go to the 5.0. As you had probably saw on ABI there a custom rom and kernel for the internationnal 4.0 (this is a great beginning I think.) I did some tests and post a little review on the thread. It is great for a first custom rom!
Yup, just saw that, hope it will get things rolling! Wonder how hard it would be to get it running on U.S version...
Only now do I see I should have payed a little extra for importing a international version instead of U.S. version, Ah well.

They're more that one month old in some parts of the world.
And they already upgraded it from froyo to gingerbread so an ICS might not come right now (if it ever comes).
I hope I'm wrong, just having bought mine to replace an ipod touch.
I just hope there wil be at least a cyanogen or other custom rom with ICS.

roms for ics 3.6inch galaxy player

are there any roms for the samsung galaxy 3.6inch mp3 player?
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007M6EYU2/ref=cm_cd_asin_lnk
This really doesn't belong in development.
Please post in general if you have nothing to contribute to the Development section. Thanks.
thread moved. not development
It was just announced today, and Amazon claims to have it in stock? Interesting... since the Galaxy Player 4.2 will be available for pre-order on May 4th and in stores May 13th.
Let's hope they're usable with some ICS love but, if not, can't fault Samsung for trying I suppose. Nobody else is bothering with the iPod touch-competition market, might as well be them.
since the device has a 480x240 screen resolution. that might make some custom roms and modified apps such as touchwiz 4.5 harder to port over to the device and I also think a lot of market compatibility issues will happen.
the screen resolution is what makes the device more different than the other galaxy players.
As said by br0adband, don't expect ROMs to come out for the 3.6 right away. It took like 3 months for a ROM to come out for the 4.0 so it'll be a little while.

New touchwiz on Sgs2?

Hello,
Now the Galaxy S3 is on its way and has the new features like touchwiz!
Do we know if there is any news of the new touchwiz to be ported to the S2?
Well the phone hasn't even been released to the public yet (on sale), so I would assume not yet. But wait till the developers get their hands on it, and I reckon magic will happen
I don't like it though, I think ICS is so much more simple and lovely, but that's my opinion. Maybe I'm also jealous I have to wait another year for an upgrade
Chris.

Will Galaxy S2 get the next Android OS? <"Jellybean">

Just out of curiosity will our Galaxy S2 get the next android version (rumoured to be named 'Jellybean').
I'm sure we are gonna get 2-3 more future updates "unofficially" but what will Samsung say about it?
What features will u like to see in the next update?
Talking about future updates, do u think iOS 6 gonna give a competition to android or just be an eye-candy for iSheeps?
i think yes if sammy didn't be mean with us cuz sgs1 had 3 android updates : Eclair-Froyo-GB
btw cm team will bring it for our devices so we dont care about what will sammy do
about isheep i think they will change the icons in ios 6 and they will Laugh on there ass ^_^
Maybe not from Samsung, but cm10 will be available most likely.
The hardware is strong enough for sure, as I doubt that Google will make some sort of huge jump when it comes to the hardware requirements.
Anyway, it's too early to talk about this, as we pretty much know nothing right now.
18 months is the time an android device should be officially supported by software updates
The Galaxy Nexus for sure will get the update. As the Galaxy S II has a similar [or better] hardware, and it's a market success maybe it will get the update. But I don't trust Samsung, and I will try to wait for the next Nexus or get the S III for now until Nexus is released here on Brazil. Google should force all companies to use the pure new Android with some more features, but not with less.
