Which to get? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

OK, so i have 600 dollars to give my self a nice present, and i think its time to get a tablet. I have always loved the concept of it and finally have the money to buy one. This will be my first tablet ever. My question is, should i get the normal transformer or the prime? I know the prime is way better but then again if i get the transformer i am saving up 200 dollars, but the prime is so sexy and who wouldn't want quad-core? please help!

What answer do you expect from a sub-forum full of people wanting the Prime?
Get the Prime if you have the money to spend.

I sold my transformer to get a prime. Go for it. If you are spending a bunch of money, might as well get the latest and greatest which won't get outdated as quick as the older model.
Sent from my Galaxy S2

I have to suggest the Prime. Not only do I love mine, it's much more future-proof. With Tegra-3 graphics being as awesome as they are, I'm sure more and more games will be made for them. Of course, as happened with Tegra 2, most phones will end up with it, and eventually a large part of the Android community will have a Tegra 3 device. At that point, support for Tegra 2 will slowly dwindle as people want bigger and prettier games. Getting a Tegra 3 device now will guarantee you can enjoy every software title, at least until something bigger and badder comes out, like Tegra 4, which we can only speculate a release for. Safe to assume Tegra 3 will keep you in the loop for quite a while, though.
Plus, the Prime is sexy. Really sexy.

At this point, anyone buying a new Wi-Fi tablet should get the Prime. With ICS coming out and higher performance chips you'll start to see applications introduced and optimized for it that won't run or will run poorly on older devices. The only question you should ask yourself is it worth waiting to see the timing and availibility of new tablets announced at CES on January 11th.

I think you should donate it to your favorite charity, or the nearest soup kitchen. The best present is one that helps someone in need...

Thats a very beautiful Asian woman!
To op, get the 32gb prime n you still have about $100 left over. its more than worth it.

I really debated this for myself as well. I wasn't sure i liked the colors or the thinness of the Prime while I held the tf101. I ended up with the TFP and when I opened the box I was more than pleased but still not 100% sure about the Prime. That was Wednesday. Now after a few days with this thing I could not be happier. I have barely set it down. My laptop spends its days and nights silently weeping in the corner or being consoled by my non-tablet-owning wife.

lol sorry but if you want a high quality tablet, this is not for you.. this is a great tablet to jump into the tablet game because of the low-cost but comeon now... its not that powerful..
Hahaha these little crap tablets give Android a bad name! They're saturating the market with low-price, low functionality tablets that virtually NO ONE wants. When it comes to cheap tablets I'm pretty sure the Fire and the Nook will be king (but mostly the Fire), so there's really no reason to have these things. They give ifans a reason to bash Android IMO.
This actually looks better than the Fire to me. I might be a buyer for my 7 year old...Why not? It doesn't look terrible. Wonder if it is completely 100% lead-free? lol
I'm cool with this. Cheaper tablets give us more options. There are people who basically just want a tablet to read ebooks and play the occasional angry birds. That's what's Android all about. Having options.
LOL, looks like asus slacked for too long and got beat by some cheap china tablet company...
You snooze, U loose!
Ohwell, atleast when the prime finally does come out it will have ICS hopefully right around the corner, and hopefully it will make the diffrence we all been looking for.
That chinglish makes my head ache, coming from a Chinese guy.
Lol, Asus is pissed already, but this will kick it
But unfortunatly there are no measurments on the page.
It looks pretty thick.
So what are the dimensions, how much does it weight?

I don't see that it's selling today, I see it's claiming to be the 1st ICS tablet. No different than Asus Prime has been claiming. The race is on to who will be the first to actually be the first to deliver one to a customer
well, it isn't the first Craplet device..
Different options for different budgets. That's not such a bad thing. But keep in mind this $100 tablet comes with a $60 shipping charge that makes it not so great afterall.

Transformer Prime

I wonder if Hasbro plans on sueing ASUS since they probably have the name "transformer Prime" copyrighted. Maybe someone should give Hasbro Apple's phone number. They can get a few tips from them on how to sue someone for using a name or even perhaps a geometric shape such as a rectangle .
(Sorry had to do a little tongue in cheek with all this doom and gloom about delays)
I plan on covering up the ASUS on the back of my purple Prime with a Decepticon sticker Come at me, bro!
i don't think they have either of those words under trademark, or they aren't enforcing it publicly, as asus had no problem with the original transformer.
if they marketed it with refrences to the IP, then they could have issue, but they are using the words in a more generic sence officially, and those of us who are familiar with the pop culture refrence that is implied, are making that association on our own.
Well hopefully not everyone is a d***head like Apple is.
Heck every time I call gamestop & ask them about the Transformer Prime they think I'm talking about a game lol.I'm like no the tablet.
The word Transformer is used everywhere.. Electrical and in theater etc. No way

The question in trademark cases is, essentially, could a reasonable person be confused as to the source of a product or service bearing a trademarked term, image, design, etc.? The idea is that we don't want someone to be able to, say, sell a brown-colored (or potentially any other colored, nowadays) beverage and have a reasonable person think it comes from Pepsi. Or, trick someone into buying a cheap knockoff shoe by making them think it's made by Nike.
In this case, then, could someone think that the Transformer Prime is made by Hasbro? Are tablets like the Prime close enough to Transformer toys that a reasonable person is going to be confused as to their source?
I'm guessing, probably not, because Hasbro didn't sue ASUS over the name "Transformer," even though in fact the tablet "transforms" from one kind of device (a tablet) into another (a notebook computer) in much the same way that Transformers transform from robotic creatures into recognizable human vehicles. Either Hasbro didn't see a case, or there was a quiet license agreement cut between ASUS and Hasbro.
Interestingly, "Transformer Prime" takes the use even further away from the generic concept of "transforming from one thing to another" to a specific "Transformer" character, i.e., Optimus Prime. The word "Prime" in this case is very intimately tied to the Hasbro franchise, creatively. It's a bit of a stretch for ASUS to say "we really just mean that this tablet is the 'prime' example of a transforming device." I mean, seriously.
Again, though, tablets aren't the same as toys, and so although ASUS benefits from the connection made by fans of the Transformer cartoons and movies and such, there's not likely to be any confusion among consumers as to who is making what. Hence, there's probably no trademark infringement case.
It doesn't necessarily refer to under optimus prime, since they don't use the word optimus and he was not the only prime anyways.
Not that it natters just making an argument for the sake of doing it.
Prime is just a designation of something being the first or best of something.
Any one here about the sale of the transleeve?
Thanks god the Tegra 3 doesn't use NVIDIA's Optimus technology right lol? We would be in real trouble if the Transformer prime had Nvidia Optimus.

Actually have that on my alienware m11x and it works trouble free for me. I get your joke but I don't see an issue.
There is also an lg optimus phone.
I think its funny that Motorola has to license "DROID" from George Lucas even though the phones had no reference to star wars except for the d2
Sent from my DROID X2 using Tapatalk
Well, since the Transformer Prime has been so heavily marketed and ASUS has a Transformer line of products, I am sure any legal dispute would lead to a licensing agreement like the use of "Droid", which was also kinda a questionable trademark.
I can only think that Motorola must have thought it would be cheaper to pay the license than battle it out with LucasArts in the courts. And, they got the added benefit of the direct marketing tie with the D2.
However, the same standard applies there: would a reasonable person think the "Droid" phone was from LucasArts? I'd say the case is even clearer here: I don't think ANY reasonable person would think that "Droid" as used here has anything to do with the Star Wars "droid", as opposed to the much more obvious shortening of "Android" the mobile OS which, you know, runs on mobile phones like the Droid line.
And again, there might be a license agreement between Hasbro and ASUS, and they just didn't publicize it. Although I'd give that idea more credence if ASUS were to use actual Transformer imagery in their marketing.
I was just trying to be funny. I also have a M11x but I have a R1 so no optimus. Just thought it would be funny if it was a Transformer Prime w/ Optimus technology lol. This whole thing was sort of my stab at apple and them sueing everyone and a brother for anything they precieve as their invention. Was wanted to throw out some fun since everyone is doom and gloom about a delay or what not.

Considering ordering a Prime. Would you do it again?

Hey all!
My wife and I are in the market for tablets. Both of us are in school. We both want to be able to watch movies including Netflix. And we both need the ability to create and modify Word docs.
I've been doing a lot of research and think the Prime might be the best solution for us. However, the iPad is also a contender.
If you had to do it over again, which would you get and why?
Thanks for your input!
Why ask why?

Yep what he said.
I would do it again without hesitation. Apple devices are locked down, and therefore restrictive. With an Android tablet, you can do much much more!
It can also be customized to make it your own! Without hesitation, YES- I would do it again...
By far the best tablet I have ever owned and used. Blows the ipad 2 away in my opinion and the gaming is just amazing.

I agree 100%
i would do it again, the biggest reason for using it over an ipad2 is the dock, if you're planning to do a decent amount of word processing on a tablet, the TF line with their respective docks provide the best user experience in that regard compared to any other tablet on the market.
if i had to do it again id wait for ics. Im not overly impressed with the prime. I think once apps and os can be optimized for quadcore then it will be the best tablet. But for now most apps and HC are not so you wont see a significant difference.

I know I am digging this up from a while ago, but...Would you still do it? I just ordered one from HHgregg for the $399 price ($411 with shipping). I have been watching these forums and doing research but I jumped at the lower price..so I ask you...
Would you buy this again? If not at full retail, then at the 399 price?
Edit: I'm pretty sure this should be in Q&A...Sorry about that, I just dug it up using the similar thread functionality

So...what is the speed potential for this baby?

I've got a Galaxy S2, at stock. I love it. I sold my eee pad a month after I got it because it was just too SLOW compared to my phone... :/
Now...after months of learning android and cyanogenmod more... I want to know, if a galaxy tab 10.1... With custom roms and overclocking, can it beat my phone?
I average 3200 on quadrant. Most apps pretty much open instantly.
I used a Galaxy Tab in the store once...and it was...just completely sad. It struggled to load animations, and just looked horrible compared to my phone.
I'm really just looking for a super light, super fast 10 inch tablet. So I am curious to know if this could be it. Can anyone shed some light on performance?
Look for a quad-core tegra 3 tablet. The galaxy tab 10.1 is last year's hardware and struggles with some things. Don't get me wrong, it's nice, but if I were to buy a new android tablet right now, it would probably be the Asus TF300t, or another tegra 3 tablet. for $500+, I'd probably get an ipad or the new TF700 with the 1080p screen when that comes out.

Well, I was hoping to stay under 350, I was thinking a last gen tablet, just overclocked with cyanogenmod. But...maybe I am pushing it too far
With pershoot's kernel, you can set this thing up to 1.4Ghz. The ICS roms that are out there help make it much snappier, but as previously stated: this is already old hardware. For the money you'd spend, it's a great tablet. I am quite happy with mine. Had the option been available when I bought my tab, I would have gone for the transformer prime instead...mainly because of the quad-core and the sd-card slot.

The new Asus TF300t is $379 at most local retailers. For just a bit more than your $350 budget, you can have a quad core tab with expandable memory (SD slot). Not quite as nice as the Gtab 10.1 (the asus has a plastic back), but the performance makes up for that imo.
I recently got a galaxy nexus and my experience with ICS persuaded me to finally try some custom ROMs on my tab. The difference between stock and ICS with pershoot's kernel is unbelievable. My last quadrant score was 3487 and I'm normally right around there. If I was running CM9 instead of AOKP I'd probably be able to get it higher than that consistently. The ROMs are only going to get better as well. All that being said though, the hardware is a bit old. I don't have any issues with my tab's performance anymore but I would still evaluate other options.
Here's my Quadrant score running CM9 and the kernel that install with it.

Where did you manage to get the refund?
Depends on your usage, if you draw or design the galaxy note 10.1 would be the optimal choice
If you're into gaming or just all rounded functionality and support I'd say the Nexus 7, or if you type a lot just hook a bluetooth keyboard
Don't forget the Infinity tab as an option, unless you like a smaller tablet version (7 inch) then go with the Nexus 7 or hell even a Galaxy Note 2 if you want to go the phablet route, when it releases soon of course. I'd personally say Nexus 7 though.
Got Amazon to refund my purchase of the Transformer Prime. Do you think the new Galaxy tablet and/or the Nexus 7 is better than the transformer infinity?

To my knowledge even the Infinity even if it's not that bad, still has io issues comparable with the Prime. If you're going for performance and after purchase support i don't think you can go wrong with the Nexus if you can accept the 7" screen
i dont see all those problems. my prime runs very smooth i do love it every day
If the op is returning the Prime due to i/o and lag, then infinity/tf300 can be crossed off the list of alternatives.
I just purchased a Nexus 7 for an in-dash car install (replacing factory stereo). I've been playing with it and I am really liking it. I hate to say it, but at over half the cost of my TFP, its so much better at everything.
BUT... If I were going to REPLACE my TFP, it would be with something with a 10 inch screen. The 7" screen is just a little too small for every day use. Nexus 10 maybe?
Get samsung galaxy note 10.1

I have an iPad3 and a Prime.
Prime just bricked, so I bought a Galaxy Note 10.1"

The Prime was actually a crappy device, compared to iPad and Galaxy.
Prime had terrible touchscreen sensitivity.
And froze all the time, when it was multitasking. (on all ROMS, and I tryed them all)
The Galaxy Note is just as smooth as the iPad3 in daily use.

Im going with the new wikipad. Remember you can a blutooth keyboard case. The reason why i choose this tablet is because it come with a controller that attaches to the tablet itself. This is a new tablet so iwll be waiting for the reviews tho. I also going to trust the review this time
When i used to have a prime i thought to myself, this SEEMS like a disapointment, when i got my note 10.1..........i KNEW this was a disapointment.
At first i kept wondering how the early prime users could say stuff like, "ive not touched my computer since ive had the prime" or im on it everyday",.........i just didnt get it, not with my semi functional prime...........after having the not..........i get it
Go for what suites your needs, right now there seems to be two android tabs that are ahead of the pack right now
- a decent asus 7 inch budget tab
- a decent samsung 10.1 inch tab, that happens to be one of the best android tabs around with good note and drawing capability
Heres my user review of the Note 10.1
Im a rom enthusiest, i like streamlined high performance, **** loads of driver support roms, but im having such a good experience with my note stock rom, that i dont have that "itch" to rom, which i hope communicates how im liking this tab
Check out this design thread to see how good artist, and not so good (just kidding fellas, all works appreaciated:goodartists can do with the tab

Cons

Currently no ntfs support, with usb sticks/hdd drives
Currently, no way to power external hdd drives through usb dongles

Currently dev support seems slow, saying that, a big thankyou to all devs supporting us note users, mucho apprechiado your trabailho
Charging the battery takes a little longer then the prime, all notes, not just a fluke in my case
Pros
Consistant performance, even in power save mode
SURPRISINGLY good battery life (i think im jaded by the prime on this), not matter what im running the battery performs admirably, whereas i distinctively remember the prime battery lossing juice pretty damn quickly when watching videos or playing games for instance (disclaimer, i think its safe to say my particular prime was less then stellar, so my opinion IS jaded by that fact, if others say their primes work wonderfully, well, good for you.......it was'nt in my case}
I could comfortably get 1 hour per 10 %, usuallly slighly more, for a total of at LEAST 10 hours, and thats with constant use
Heres my battery stats
Screen is just as bright as the prime, when i compared them for the brief time i had the two together
Im sure im missing a few pros and cons here, but i cant be arsed to write more, :silly:, think ive written to much anyway, daily quota or something:silly:
Hopefully someone her can review the 7 incher, if the note does not float your boat, goodluck with whatever you decide,
