[ROM][ICS]Droid2 Global CM9 with GB kernel - Droid 2 Global Android Development

Due to requests for a dev thread, here it is.
And as a note:
I am privatizing my builds and will only release tests to those I deem competent of being able to produce crash dumps, log files, and other useful information. This is not because I dislike anyone, but the stress of having 20 people tell me that "x doesn't work, when can you get it working?" isn't going to make me want to work on it.
Currently in a working state (may still be buggy):
Audio
Bluetooth
Wifi (After reboot, should be tcmd related)
2D/3D Acceleration (renderscript is unknown/buggy)
Sensors
CDMA radio
GPS (not aGPS)
USB Charge/Mass Storage/ADB
Key mapping (working 'b' key)
CPU scaling works correctly
What doesn't work or is already a known bug:
The Alt-lock key.
Camera
3G data
GSM Radio (will be testing this asap)
What will NEVER work:
NFC
ETA: [font=comic sans ms,cursive]When it's ready.[/font]
As this is a hot topic: If you wish to donate, please send it to Hascode or the Defy Team as they've helped me out more than I usually care to admit. I'll lengthen this list and flesh it out later.
My current source can be found and built from github Global-KANGs

Definitely looking forward to this rom. Good luck with the development.

I'll try building myself from github when I get some time to prep build environment. Meanwhile bikedude880, if you are looking for testers (GSM) I'm here (not sure if you got my PM over rootzwiki).

Sorry to ask, however has there been any improvement or testing done yet on 3G DATA and GSM?

Flashing CM9
Hey guys,I found a ROM of CM9 on another site last night. I rebooted into CM Recovery and made a nandroid backup first of my factory D2G ROM. After that I cleared everything and did a factory data reset and cleared the cache and dalvik-cache. After that I flashed CM9 onto my D2G along with the ICS Gapps. Everything went just fine but upon the phone booting up, it keeps bootlooping and actually not going into the operating system. I thought maybe I need to give it some time to load and all so I let the phone sit all night waiting and woke up this morning and it was still in the bootloop. Now I'm flashing back to the SBF from Verizon and retrying everything. Can anybody tell me if I did anything wrong. I have experience with Droid 1's,HTC Hero's, T-MO G1's,etc. I'm pretty sure everything was done correctly and went by all the flashing instructions I've ever been taught. I'm kinda at a loss and think I may just keep it on a factory rooted ROM.
Model:
Droid 2 Global A956
CWM Recovery 2.0.8 I believe
I did install the bootloader app that I got
ICS CM9.zip file
1.Did BACKUP
2.Wiped Everything

[ROM] MIUI.US MIUI4D2G 1.10.21 Needs GB!

This is MIUI for the Droid 2 Global. You will need to be on Gingerbread .606 or .607 before installing any build after 1.9.16!
Currently everything is working except the alt lock key. Bluetooth should be working now too (please let me know if it is/isnt)
It is highly advised to have your phone activated before installing this rom
Get the update from MIUI.US' download page
http://roms..miui.us
(Mirror)
http://roms.miui.us/...e=cdma_droid2we This is a direct link to the rom on MIUI
Droid 2 Global 1.10.21
http://www.multiupload.com/GUZ75UEDX8 (Test rom with Bluetooth working and updated init (less sticky settings))
Changelog:
Updated to 1.10.21
FINALLY Switched to Defy Base
Updated to Android 2.3.7
Included governors and scripts from Droid X Chat
Included Bootmenu
Brought in changes over 1.9.16.1 (Any GSM tweaks you guys were using before should still work)
Includes MIUI Control now
Speed increase
Included smartass governor and others
Note: The 2 usb icon's is not an issue, it is due to the new usb toggle
Notes2: Over the next few releases I will be doing a freeze on adding new features and trying to get Bluetooth to work and fix some other small issues
Notes 3: You will most likely need to wipe data and cache for this update due to our base switch! (should be the last switch in a long time!)
Notes4: The phone is underclocked to 1 Ghz by default! Go into the boot menu and set the voltage and cpu speeds you desire. you can also set the governor to use here too!
To get to the boot menu press volume down when you see a blue light come on at boot!

http://www.mediafire...7xkg88bx99wod1y MIUI4D2G V 5.0 (froyo)
http://www.mediafire...aexgk9sercps8qn Overlay I am using incase I ever quit (for reference) (5.0 Froyo overlay, DO NOT USE FOR NORMAL INSTALLS OF MIUI, THIS IS FOR DEVELOPERS ONLY)
Note: If you try to switch network versions you will need to erase /system/ /data/ and /cache/ and then install whatever version you want. It caches whatever mode you are in and that will cause problems if you do not follow the method listed above.
You can use recovery! Go to the rom manager and in there install droid x (2nd init) and then it should work! That is apparently the only way to get there.
Dont forget to clear data and cache after installing or else you WILL have a bootloop
Donations are MUCH appreciated!

Thanks go out to CVPS,Framework43, Revnumbers, Gasai Yuno, Asphyx, x13thangelx, Bikerdude and the rest of the CM4D2G team!
Thanks also go out to the person who made the MIUI honeycomb theme that is used in V5 as default!
HUGE thanks to Droid X Chat for the work I borrowed from him! (bootmenu, user init's, etc.)
Reserved
Also, please donate if you think my ports have made your phone a better device! Not asking out of greed but because I have spent so much time on this rom (quite literally if I quantified it, I would have almost a months worth of workdays in it)
i have been meaning to try this rom out. how well does it work.
i am on a .608 update would it still work with my phone?
awesome rom. i like it way better then other ones i have had on my phone.
Works pretty well. Only bugs are BT, a couple sticky settings and alt lock key. The BT and a few more sticky settings will be fixed this upcoming update (likely around sunday or monday). I hit the same performance of around CM. Slightly lower because MIUI is a heavier rom but it is faster than Blur. It gets slightly less battery than blur but better than CM.
Despite repeated efforts .. when I flash rom it boots to white motorolla
icon and never goes past. Sbf. 607. Wiped cache factory reset before and after flash

You hit the nail on the head! You need to be on gingerbread at first. With the updated band unlock that exists on rootzwiki you don't need to be on froyo for anything at all anymore. Also I updated the OP with an updated 1.10.21 with working Bluetooth and fewer sticky settings
ALT lock dosnt work on. it isnt big problem but its a bug .
Everything else work well for now.
I like MIUI, but I have GPRS and bluetooth problems on this rom, so I keep waiting for the new release.

-below Lrs121 post their is my original post to help with flashing if you need it. Flashing should be the same. Included in Lrs121 post their is a wifi patch that DKZ applied.
Enjoy!
Lrs121
Here it is! CM9 Beta1 Download links.
THANK YOU AND ALL CREDIT GOES TO DragonzKiller For all the work hes put forth
Read entire post before flashing. Its long i know but worth reading.
Known issues for mx2 cm9beta1 without data wipe (comes from my experience with it)
Includes same issues for dx2
constant super user request (see fixes/info)
always says updating android durring startup (see fixes/info)
reboot/shutdown hangs (see fixes/info)
restart doesnt work properly (see fixes/Info)
WIFI does not start (SEE FIXES/INFO)
NOTE!!! IF UPDATING FROM ALPHA 4 Wipe DATA CACHE AND FACTORY RESET!!! DATA WIPE FOR ALPHA 5 IS NOT REQUIRED BUT RECOMMENDED!!!
How to install(credit to DZK)
Installation:
Install the BSR (patched if on CM7/CM9)
Reboot into the BSR
NANDROID <--- you'll probably want to go back to this
Install the CM9 zip from the SD Card MX2 Users Go to the MX2 Thread for the Patched CM9 zip once it has been updated to Beta 1
MX2 ONLY! Install the WiFi Driver zip from the SD Card
Install the GAPPS from the SD Card
Wipe both DATA and CACHE (no need to wipe Dalvik if you wipe both of these)
Reboot your phone
Enjoy CM9 Beta 1
Fixes/Info-for flash with out data wipe
Constant superuser requests - Fixed
when it happens - when you open an app that requires su access
Theory - su updated but the app list didnt causing request loops
how to fix - enter play market; go to my apps and uninstall updates for superuser; reinstall updates; open superuser and manually update binaries
Always shows Updating Android - Info
Info - No fix known, however it does not prevent your device from starting. Itll add on a couple seconds to the start time the first few times the phone is turned on after the first startup after flashing. After a few restarts it only takes a split second and it jumps right to the lock screen.
Reboot/Shutdown hangs (note this is occasional) - Info
Info - When rebooting or shutting down the phone will seem to hang with the rebooting/shutting down notification and the spinner is still spinning. The phone will become unresponsive to button input; that is normal for the shutdown and restart routiens.
Fix - None however the phone should reslove it fairly quickly the longest ive seen it hang is a minute or two then it shuts down or restarts properly. if it lasts longer than that i recomend a battery pull.
Restart doesnt work properly - Info
Info - this usually happens when the restart hangs. the phone will determine that the restart is taking too long and will force shutdown the device. The device will not start back up AUTOMATICALLY. Just turn on the the phone normally as if you had told it to shutdown instead of restart.
WIFI Does not start - info/fix hybrid
Info/Fix - after flashing the rom and the wifi fix, the wifi may or may not turn on/connect durring the first start up, restart the phone. After the first restart the wifi should turn on but be delayed in connecting, wait for it to connect or say its connecting and then restart the phone. afterward there should be no problem with the wifi. if you are still having problems you may need to reflash everything.

DKZ Came out with CM9 for the Droid X2. I tried to flash it and it did not work.
I did some modifying on his file, which he created, to see if I could get it to load in the Milestone X2. We are running a different kernel then the Droid X2.
I wanted to let everyone know that it was a success! With Several hours in trying to locate certain files and modifying them we have
CM9 FOR THE MILESTONE X2
I am in no means taking credit for DKZ's work. He did a fantastic job!
Problems I have seen so far are:
WIFI (working with DKZ to work)
Camcorder
Have not tested
HDMI
Radio
MMS
What works
Data
Text
Call
Touch screen
GPS
Camera*New
Theme's are suppose to work.
The transitions are smooth and I have not had any issues with freezing or anything yet.
When I loaded I came from stock 2.3.6 Rooted
Instructions.
1. Root phone on (how to do that Click Here)
2. Place BSR on memory card
3. Install BSR
4. Load BSR
5. Hit install Button
6. Click Recovery Mode
7. Do a backup
8. Wipe Factory Settings
9 Wipe Cache Settings
10. Go to Advance Settings
11. Go Wipe Devlik Cache
12. Select Go Back
13. Select Install from SD Card
14. Go to the place you put the ROM zip and choose install
15. GO back and install GAPP apps.
16. Wipe Factory and Cache one more time
17. Reboot phone
18. Install BSR Patch (link Below)
19. Enjoy Goodness!
To go back to backup copy.
1. Install Patched BSR
2. Select install
3. Select REcovery Mode
4. Select "Back up and Restore
5. Select Restore
6. GO to area restore was saved
7. watch load
8. Then when done then select to reboot phone
9. You are done!
Just keep in mind. If you are on stock use the normal BSR if you are on CM9 then use the Patched BSR! THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!

So us Cspire users don't have a working sbf? Have you tried this yet? I was just about to do it before I read what you wrote lol
If you guys want WIFI working. All you have to do is ask. I know how to make it work for you guys if the ROMs are actually running.
EDIT: I am going to need a few things from you guys first. And I am going to need one of you guys to get me the SBF for your phone so I can get them. If I have it, I can make one that works (at least for that specific SBF, maybe the others).

is this essentially for x2 owners that are not with verizon?
Below is the SBF for ntelos wireless running 2.3.6. That is the current sbf for that network and phone.
I did want to say that the firmware of 418 that was just recently released is the same as the Milestone X2. Eclipse made his new rom,2.2, based on this update and the wifi works. I do not know if this helps.

This is for Milestone X2 owners. We had issues isntalling CM7, MIUI, and CM9 with their release because we have a different kernel. So I modified DKZ original file so we can enjoy this one as well! They will not flash unless a few things are modified. This has been modified so MX2 customers can still enjoy the same things as DX2 customers.
I'll just make a patch that you guys can use.
Sent from my MB870 using XDA
Awesome!
Here is the patch the *should* work to get wifi working. I have NOT tested it and I don't even guarantee that it'll even flash. It also doesn't have a kernel check. With that being said, if it does work, I can only guarantee that it'll work with the MilestoneX2 version that was given to me in the SBF. As I know there a few versions out there, I doubt the kernel is the same for all of them. I don't have a MilestoneX2, so I wouldn't be able to check these things.
Wifi patch for the NTELOS MilestoneX2:
REMOVED CUZ IT WAS BAD
Also note that this patch (if working) should work with CM7 as well.
I am flashing it now. I will let you know.
EDIT; It did not work. Gave me a (code 6) error.

One thing I can recommend is if you are on stock use regular recovery. If you are in CM9 then use The Batched Recovery for CM7. As long as you do that you are going to be alright. Also look at the rerecovery.

Okay, I have gotten so blasted close with getting a custom rom on this phone. What is the status of your Photon currently? Assuming it is rooted and unlocked, running what rom? Please provide info on what rom you are on now, which one you flashed from, and what process you used to get where you are. The more info provided the easier it will be to help.
Well lets see, currently I am back on stock, but here is what I did. I rooted, unlocked, installed CWM 5.0.2.7 I also flashed jokers recoveryv3 ( I follow QB's videos) So then I installed the gummy rom using this process. Format system, format data, format cache, wipe cache then dalvik cache. flash rom, flash rom again ( now I did not reboot into recovery after I flashed the rom the first time) I just went straight to install rom again. flash gapps, fix permissions. Reboot up and good loving it all. Waited 15 min then rebooted again. That's it. So I am at a loss. Thanks for help if you need any other info please let me know.
Oh I am on 2.3.4 with 198_7 also
In your system settings did you have "home only" or "automatic" selected for your roaming settings? For a lot of these roms, "automatic" is forced roam. And then if you didn't have roaming data enabled, that would explain why you were constantly roaming with no data.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA
Thanks so much .
I did have automatic checked but I did have roaming data enabled also. I flipped it around too with home only. I am truly beginning to think my phone is just plain "off " who knows. It's a shame though, I mean not that stock is bad on this phone but the custom roms are so much better imo. This is the first phone I have ever had a problem with. I have been flashing phones for years. Think I started with a HTC Mogul. That was a solid phone LOL
Does CM7 work for you? If it does then I reckon flashing that and setting it up, then instead of doing a full wipe keep your data and flash CM9 based rom over it, fix permissions and take it from there.
I have not tried CM7 but I can, sure can't hurt to try at this point. Thanks, I will give that a try tomorrow.
Have you tried *#*#4636#*#*? Sometimes flashing changes the radio in that menu. Be careful though, changing something can really Bork your phone. It should be on cdma prl I think

Deb, my photon has never been kind to me with the 'flash twice' method. It always results in no data. Try cm9 again, but this time wipe cache, system, data, and dalvik, install version 3.1 of cm9, boot into it, reboot to recovery, wipe cache and dalv, then install the latest cm9 version. Always works for me. Good luck

Morning all, your all are great. Okay so I am ready to start again. I'm at stock right now so I need to get her all set up again. (Yes my phone is a she) Acvice, I am going to try your method first will let you know in a bit.
Looks like joker's site may be down so I need to try and find the 2 cm9 roms
I have this rom saved already on my computer

Glad someone provided you with that 3.1 link. Looking forward to see if it works out for ya.
By the way, you will know it worked if when you boot up in 3.1 you have working data. Flashing the newer version after that will essentially just update everything.
Deb, I take it the flash of 0.3.1 didn't work? Did you have data and then lose it when you flashed 0.6.9.3? What were your exact steps. I just rooted/unlocked and flashed my f-in-law's new photon and it worked just fine. Lemme know what you did and maybe I can help more
sent from my CM7 MoPho
Thanks bullfrog that's nice of you but honestly I'm good now As you know.
I didn't even try to install 0.3.1. I kept thinking about it, seeing I had no luck with 2 others previously so I decided to go the MIUI route and I'm a happy camper with that one. I am a flashaholic for sure, as we all are here. I am thinking though, I am gonna just be happy with where I am at for now. Of course I will most likely decide to give another rom a try at some point.
Of course I am already eyeing a few Samsung Epic touch's on ebay. I hear that one can be a brick just waiting to happen....weeeee I am having way too much fun
I'm glad you made it to MIUI. if you ever want to try cm9 or and of the similar ones (aokp, gummy, paranoid) I would suggest flashing that 0.3.1 first, then updating to the latest cm9, then flashing the variant

Well I am not the expert but I will toss in my 2 cents. I have activated a Droid x2 (MB870) on Page Plus. I SBFed back to 2.3.4 (1.3.380.MB870.Verizon.en.US; Oct 11, 2011), rooted with auto DX2Batchroot_2013.v2.exe to apply Android JB 4.1.2 CM10-Alpha3 ROM by DZK.
I am very happy with CM10 right now; it works fine on Page Plus. JB 4.1.2 is a BIG improvement over 2.3 Gingerbread. With that said, I will not be trying out other ROMs for the time being, since I need a working phone.
All other ROMs to my knowledge require SBF back to 2.3.4 except Eclipse 2.3 so you might want to try it first if you are already on 2.4.5(418).
Other ROMs to consider:>> wwwDOTdroidxforums.com/forum/droid-x2-roms/
I am satisfied with my Droid x2 since it meets my needs. 1. G3 data to work on PP; 2. Android 4.x after flashing; 3. Great display with guerrilla glass and not too big to fit in my pocket.
Cons are the Nvidia Tegra 2 GPU on it. The Tegra 2 will not be supported anymore so there is no upgrade to 4.4 KK. XBMC v13 will not work on it either. CM10a3 is in Alpha state and further development on it is iffy. Some have said the video does not work well but I have not experience this. There is a slight shutter when selecting videos from the list, but they played well for me.
If you decide to purchase I will be glad to give you tips I compiled since I just did this Mar 2014.

System Boot File - SBF
SBF is the System Boot File, an image which restores the phone to its factory state. The latest from Motorola is 2.3.5(1.3.418.MB870.Verizon.en.US; May 8,2012) which is Moto’s Droid x2 version of Gingerbread 2.3 and will probably be what is on your phone. All custom ROMs except Eclipse v2.3 use the earlier Moto release 2.3.4 (1.3.380.MB870.Verizon.en.US; Oct 11, 2011).
I’m curious, how much did you pay for your Droid x2? I took a gamble and picked mine up used, but was very pleased with its condition. I am considering picking up another for cheap .
Rooting and installing was not hard but I spent a lot of time researching finding much of the info dated. Droid hacks were pretty popular in the day so there is much content, but it has shortcomings, so many have moved on. For a 3G phone, which is what I needed, I could not find any better one. My CM10 install did hit a bump by continuously installing with an infinite loop on boot; that cost me some time. I think my fix was to wipe my data in addition to cashe; the first couple of tries when I got the loop I just cleared cashe.
There's some really good information on the Droid x2 in this forum and others. RootJunkyDOTcom seems to be up-to-date and gives good step by step instruction so I suggest checking it out. sd_shadow is another good source to Google. I have other links that I would include but since I am newly registered, I can’t until I have at least posts.
Thanks
I paid $74.09 shipped on ebay. Seems like a fair price. Thanks for the info. My phone should be here on Wednesday. I think Ill go with a 4.1.1 rom. Thanks again.

To Merlin11 and dukkha2:
sd_shadow is one of the Titans on the x2 forum. His links are very current and exhaustive. I hope will monitor this thread over the next few weeks as to assist in flashing the x2. I will follow up with my notes on rooting and flashing CM10a3 tomorrow.
To sd_shadow:
I could use advice on a problem I have with BSR. After flashing CM10a3 I have installed the Patched BSR so I can backup my ROM and I try experiment with the softkey zip mod. BSR shows up as "CM7 System" on my apps screen so I know I have the patched version; however, I get a boot loop of the Moto Boot screen anyway. I have tried installing the other ordinary BSR (shows as System Recovery on the apps screen) but this causes the same infinite loop at the Motorola boot screen.
The loop only occurs when I have the usb charger plugged in to my x2 telling me the problem is the BSR. I am able to recover by pulling the battery and rebooting without the charger. I booted into Motorola's Recovery and wiped the data and cashe. This did not solve the loop issue. I was going to try wiping the Dalvik also but I don't know what this is or how to wipe this.
I have seen your CM10 hijack-boot.zip instructions and considered try this fix. I have not loaded this fix yet because when I compared the etc/hijack-boot.zip on my phone with the one in the hijack-boot.zip file they have the same MD5 which implies CM10a3 already has the updated hijack-boot.zip patch.
Any suggestions?

that should be correct, only one patched that I know of, it's the original cm7 bsr.

You followed instructions and used files posted here? Concise guide to getting CWM working with cm10 A3
and verified the roms md5 before installing, I know that the original Dev-Host file download, failed for many people the first try.

You will need to downgrade to 2.3.4, before installing CM10, see my How To Flash a SBF Using RSD Lite

I missed these instruction for how to install the patch when searching; much appreciated. There are many pages in the CM10 thread, I think the link to the Concise patched BSR should be added to the CM10 instructions in #1 as a final step so users can backup with CWM.
Your link to SBF to 2.3.4 would also be a good addition.
Another addition would be a link to re-calibrate the battery stat mine I screwy right now. It shows 100% then drops to fast. I am researching this.
Everything else is working splendid!

dukk, I just redid this whole upgrade in about 30 min so don't fear it. I can't leave url links but if you google or search in xda on the quoted words you should be able to find the links and files. sd_shadow's links above are very good. Also check out wwwDOTrootjunkyDOTcom.
1. downgrade to 2.3.4
-Follow sd_shadow in response #8 and #10 above.
-don't sweat using the latest RSD, 5.4, 5.6, or the latest 5.7 will all do the job. Just make sure you load the USB drivers first and your phone is connecting to your PC
2. root
-I have been using "DX2Batchroot_2013.v2.exe". try Googling it. It will automatically install BSR you need for ROM install.
-There is a video using the file above but it is for 2.3.5. It doesn't matter, the procedure is exactly the same.
3. Download CM10a3, gapps, softkeys, patched BSR apk, and patched hijack-root.zip files and put on your External SDCARD
-CM10a3 rom
-gapps ("gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip")
-optional softkeys (search "CM10DX2-A3-softkeys.zip")
-patched BSR and hijack-root.zip >>> checkout sd_shadows response #10 above (don't install until #5 below)
4. Install the first 3 zip files in #3 using BSR CM10a3 rom ("cm-10-20130113-UNOFFICIAL-daytona"), gapps ("gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip") and optional softkeys (search "CM10DX2-A3-softkeys.zip") but you must load BSR only after you wipe data
-Make sure you follow the instructions.
-You must wipe data AND cashe or it will hang on the start screen.
5. Load patched BSR along with replacing hijack-root.zip in the /etc folder so you can create a Backup using the patched BSR
-This is spelled out in the link in response #10 above
-you will need a Terminal app. There are free ones in Google Play.
-wipe data and cashe again
6. Load optional apps and backup again.
-I have a battery calibration issue. Check out "Battery calibration (New method?)" in wwwDOTdroidxforumsDOTcom for a fix
-There is a fix to Facebook videos in xda x2 forum.
Good Luck! You really can't brick this x2. SBF can recovery any hack you do. I messed up yesterday and replaced the patched BSR in CM10 with the ordinary one. I don't recommend this! It locked me out of my phone and I couldn't recover. I had to re-SBF. I did get to test the backup I created with BSR and it worked well.

MIUI v5 may be an option for JB 4.2.2
I see a new thread for a beta of MIUIv5 coming soon for the DX2. I am willing to try it. I like CM10 but have been experiencing some shortcoming s such as battery indicator, some apps crash, and videos only playing sound or not able to play at all.
looks like it is build with the same source as cm10, so it will have similar problems.

Constant issues with rooted S4.

Hi all,
Long time lurker of XDA and Android user/modder since before Gingerbread. I want to apologize in advance if this post is either in the wrong section, and/or if something similar has already been answered/solved in another thread. I did multiple searches with nothing coming up as a direct hit, or even close for that matter.
I recently purchased an S4 from VZW (Mid-Late July). I rooted and installed TWRP 5.2.0.2 (Forgive me if that's not the exact version...) and flashed AOSP ROMs here and there. After a month or so, I started coming across an issue within all ROMs where I couldn't receive or make calls without my phone either freezing or rebooting. Anything I flashed, or modded, failed to remedy this. I tried different GApps packages, 4.2.2 and 4.3 ROMs, different kernels, and both radios, and absolutely NOTHING solved this. I searched everywhere (Even rootzwiki, forgive me fellow XDA members!), and could not find anyone with the same issue.
I attempted upgrading to TWRP 2.6.0.0 and even tried CWM, and that didn't help either. Eventually, things got so bad that I couldn't boot into ANY ROM, 4.2.2 or 4.3. After nearly 10 hours of trying to unbrick my phone, I finally managed to install Beanstalk 4.3, and while it was working incredibly buggy (Not Beanstalk's fault, the developer is a great developer!) nor could I make calls, I could still send texts and emails. I was able to FINALLY get the Odin3 application to work when I got home from work, and was able to flash the stock MDK image. From there I followed the steps to properly root and install TWRP 2.6.0.0. I installed Slim's Beta 5 4.3 ROM and GApps and everything was working properly! Calling, everything! However, when I made a reboot, it froze. Stuck in the "Samsung Unlocked" screen for over an hour. I pulled the battery, booted into recovery and did a factory reset/cache and dalvik wipe. It still didn't boot. From there I did a full wipe, and data format, installed Beanstalks newest 4.3 ROM and GApps, and everything loaded properly. Then I couldn't make or receive calls without the same issue. I then did the superwipe/format and installed PAC's newest nightly and GApps package, and was able to make calls, but then got stuck when rebooting, even after factory resets and cache/dalvik wipes. After multiple attempts, I gave up and reflashed the stock MDK Samsung image in Odin3 and am leaving it as is until someone here can help me.
I know this post was incredibly wordy, and I apologize for that, but I wanted to give you guys as much information as possible and explain where this all started, as it may lead to why I'm having these problems. I appreciate any and all responses and I will answer any question any of you have to the best of my ability. Please someone save me from the horror that is TouchWiz!

First, make a NANDROID if it is working perfect on the stock ROM. This is my first step after root and recovery so that I can always fall back on something to check if there is a hardware problem, or just some sort of (system) file problem. Plus, it'll save you time if you have to go back.
Not sure that it matters, but is the stock ROM odexed, or deodexed?
The calling thing reminds me of when you use the phone overseas but it has yet to be unlocked. When you root, do you check with Root Checker? Do you have SuperSU installed? How about BusyBox? I know some items require BusyBox in order to work, but SuperSU should be installed.
As far as SuperSU, do you update it before switching back to the original kernel? One thing I noted is to be absolutely sure you do so in order to not lose your root when completing the rooting steps. I imagine this could cause other problems too.
I also suggest not using TWRP 2.6, which many people will tell you is quite buggy. Best to use the previous version.
The only other things I can suggest is ALWAYS doing a full wipe of everything before adding a new ROM. I used to do this to be sure I incurred no problems on my SGS3, because if I didn't there would always be something buggy happening.
Hope this helps.

Thank you, Heatshiver!
I always do a full wipe unless I'm doing a dirty flash for a ROM update. I will try reverting back to TWRP 2.5.0.2 (Whichever version that happens to be, I think it's .0.2) tonight and report my results. Also, just to clarify, I always make sure I have the most updated SuperSU/Superuser (Usually the former) and BusyBox.
I appreciate the suggestion.

sorry for your troubles, but I am always baffled the way people just toss that word "brick" round
Your phone was no anywhere NEAR being a brick...
You simply are playing with fire flashing AOSP ROMs and not knowing how to fix the issues.
AOSP ROMs aren't technically "made" for our phones, the developers do a great job at making it seem like they are, though.
On the SG3 we had an EFS backup that Synergy discovered incase you flash an AOSP and get stuck in roaming which was quite often at first with AOSP, that was easy to fix, but with this phone I would be careful with AOSP ROMs, even myself, with a locked bootloader wouldn't flash anything besides TW, although I am biased as AOSP is my flavor.
I am sorry if this post comes off harsh or any other bad word. It's not meant for that..
Just to kindly ask you to do some research on what a "bricked phone" truly is.
it's a brick.. meaning won't power on, won't get a light when charging, nothing, your phone is just that, a $600 brick. and the only way to bring back to life IIRC is Jtagging the phone.. which requires taking the phone apart and jtagging the motherboard.
I hope you the best my friend.
As much as I love AOSP, I would have to agree with the poster above. I know TW is a pain but there are some pretty good ROMs in that flavor that you shouldn't have any problems with. I've had the no call issue on AOSP, and even though they are nice and free up quite a bit of room it's not worth missing calls over or constantly flashing. Maybe once our bootloader is unlocked things will become different but I'd stick with TW until that happens. I can confirm that TWRP 2.6 is very buggy...you'll have to download the 2.5 version and flash it instead of goomanager they install they latest version everytime I believe.

You also may want to try CWM recovery if everything else fails. I like TWRP but I kept having the exact problem you have. I switched and haven't had a problem since.

Would you mind telling me which version of CWM you're using? I haven't gone back to CWM since I went back to stock two nights ago.
Thank you for the idea!

I also forgot to mention that I haven't been able to connect to 4G radios since before I started having issues with AOSP ROMs. Currently I'm on Eclipse's TW (With AOSP Styling) ROM. Everything appears to be working fine, other than 4G.
I've tried the SIM pull and reset, and nothing. I've tried manually setting it to LTE only, at least when I was able to do so when AOSP ROMs would boot for me, and nothing. I have a Galaxy Nexus that I booted up with this SIM in and I get 4G signal. Any Ideas?
Also, when I was on the stock image (MDK) I didn't have 4G either.
Has anyone else run across this issue? (MODS: Let a me know if I should create another thread, or search more intensively. I haven't seen a thread with this exact same situation. Plenty of 4G issue threads, but none with the same issues I've previously had, and I think it may have something to do with my past modding.)

Thanks! I installed CWM 6.0.3.6 Touch and flashed Eclipse's TW/AOSP ROM and everything works well, but it's still no AOSP ROM.
-Travis
Hi all,
I'd like to thank everyone for the suggestions.
An update: Currently I'm on Eclipse's TW v2.0 ROM (TW, with AOSP Styling) and everything works properly. My current recovery is CWM 6.0.3.6 Touch, and I'm not experiencing any booting or calling issues. 4G is the only thing I don't have working.
I'm hoping that someone with my same problem can give me another idea so I can get an AOSP ROM working, preferably with 4G. I'm sure some, if not most, understand my dislike of TouchWiz and strong preference towards stock Android/stock Android based ROMs. Slim6596 said that he uses Philz Modded CWM Recovery and has no issues anymore. Could that really be my solution?
Again, thank you all for your help and ideas. I love XDA for this reason.

Hi Slim,
Sorry to bother, but I was curious if you were specifically using the LOKI patched version, or just the regular version?

Thanks!! I installed the Loki-Patched version last night.
I tried flashing two AOSP ROMs, but have no radio signal at all. I'll experiment.

I have stuck to TW ROMs. Pretty soon I'm probably not going to be flashing anything. Switching to Motorola and giving Vz my MDK S4 back. (Reception and dropped call issues.)

I believe you have to do the extended phone function. Its a code on the dial pad and select cdma. I have read this but don't recall where.

Are you referring to the *#*#4636#*#* dialer code? I didn't even try that because in my settings, everything was set to CDMA, but that's something I can try. I have everything backed up, so I can just wipe, install, and try that. If it doesn't work, I can always revert back.
Thanks for the suggestion!
