The OS e.g. Android and Touchwiz use up about 100mb RAM for itself leaving only 300-400mb for the user. My HTC Desire S has 768mb but really i can only use 623mb hope this helps.

I would recommend a 3rd party launcher like ADW Launcher on Android market very light weight, also a app like memory booster which frees RAM. Their are no such mods to change the file system usage as changing the amount of RAM the system needs could result in a unstable device. I have a Galaxy wifi 5.0 with 512mb RAM and the 200mb left is enough for me without lag etc. hope this helps
I recommend using Advanced Task Killer. It has a very easy interface, and frees up ram quickly.
What does it say for ram on the player.... I have seen 377... and 345.
I have 345 and Im pretty pissed about it.
I have 342mb of RAM available. But I heard that around 100+ mb are dedicated to the gpu on the galaxy s phone, and the galaxy player has the same hardware so should be the same. So I think it still has 512mb of ram, but just 342 is usable by Android.
Have a look at the output of dmesg (e.g. run the following in a terminal and copy the resultant file to your PC to view: dmesg > dmesg_output.txt) and it tells you how much memory you have and how much has been set aside. Note you will probably want to reboot before you do this as otherwise the interesting messages have scrolled out of the kernel message buffer.
I've been using an app called Fast Reboot Pro. It appears to simply close processes that are running in the background. It then shows you how much memory was was freed. I hit every so often and especially when things appear to lag. Seem to work pretty well.

Gingerbread/Samsung has it's own task manager which in turn has it's own widget which does this. No need to install an app for this
I to use fast reboot, find it much more effective than what the player comes with. I also use ram manager pro witch is a very good tool to set different ram profiles, I like "balance (more free memory)" the best. I first select my profile, then I run fast reboot, very effective! The more you run fast reboot, the more memory it frees up, witch is great for big games like asphalt 6. Also, I use zeam launcher, very lightweight, perhaps the lightest, but still a great improvement over touchwiz. Another thing, NO LIVE WALLPAPERS is an absolute necessary! These things eat WAY more ram than they say on taskmanager. THEY CAN EAT 50+ MB OF RAM!! Also, services like widgetlockscreen and such will eat your ram. If you want to play a heavy game, go to running services and kill as many as you can, you can also clear cached apps by hitting the menu button in running services. Hope these tips help you to make the most of our small supply of ram!
Hmm, after more testing, it would appear that wifi burns around 25mb of ram when on! So, if your really short on ram, just turn on airplane mode to kill all antennas. I just played modern combat 3 with 25mb free ram throughout the whole level I had 190mb free originally, that game sure eats the stuff :s The CPU rides at 1000mhz through the whole game, lol, could always use some more of that stuff! That's what oc is for

I'm running dagr8s alpha 2 ics rom. And I know that it has lower ram than the gb roms. But lately I have been running Tasker (amazing app btw) numbers and it keeps notifying me that I have low ram and it might not work properly. I go to applications in settings and check my ram and it says I only have 98mb free. I end all tasks and clear ram and then still I have like 120-130 free. I'm afraid that this is a too low amount. And wanted your opinions on what I should do. Is this enough should I just ignore the warnings will Tasker still run fine? How can I get more ram? Are any of you also experiencing low ram?

Taller uses ram also. I run trebuchet launcher on alpha 2 and have no real issues. If it gets slow you can hold home and clear things out. Running a lot of widgets still affect ram also.

If you go to developer options in settings at the bottom and select the background processes and set it to 3 processes at most that helps alot...also if u change ur dalvik heap to 64 that also helps a ton...DO NOT and I repeat do not set it below 64 as u will soft brick your phone

You must understand how Android uses memory, it loads your frequentlyused programs into ram so when you go to use them, they open much faster than if they would if they had to open "fresh" each time.the lmk (low memory killer) should take care of everything if you ate currently using a process that uses a lot of memory it will kill off apps as it needs to.
Put simply: FREE RAM IS WASTED RAM.
Have a marine navigation program "Navionics USA EAST" that wouldn't open in ICS(leak and Saurom) unless I cleared RAM. No issue onstock GB, and runs fine on sgh-i777 ICS? Tried debloating leak, but didn't help much. Will try limiting running programs when back on ICS.

Free Ram is wasted ram. Never thought about it like that. I understand but i would still like some free ram just so its available for other apps i open. I did use the task manager to kill running apps and clear ram and it didnt free up that much ram that is why i was worried.

Welcome to ICS. This is exactly why I DONT like ICS - the memory footprint is huge just for ICS alone.
Free ram is not entirely wasted ram.
Let me explain.
So, my phone RAM is completely (or nearly) filled and I open a new app. There is now a long delay as Android goes to work closing app(s) down and doing garbage collection to free up memory for the new app I just tried to open but it only frees up enough for the one app I just opened.
And now, every app I go to open is going to have this long delay.
What you really want is about 80% ram usage - enough that there is free ram to open new apps without Android having to scurry around to free up a bunch of memory.
I dont know if there is a way to force a certain amount of ram to be free but imo, thats what youd really want.
I only have 6 user apps on my phone and Im running stock GB so even if I opened everything at once, there would be plenty of ram to have them open all at once (Go Launcher, Blue Skies (paid), Battery Power Widget, System Tuner Pro, BeyondPod, & Audible).
It's called "minfree memory," what you want is an app that will allow you to modify those values. Back when I had a Captivate, I used an app called AutoKiller for that purpose. I haven't needed it on the Note though. You can find it in the Android market.

yea i think thats normal because the phone system uses some of that ram to make the phone work. Like if you ever had a sd card or an ipod that was say an 8gb ipod you actually only have like 7.66gb free.
But yeah I would like more ram availabe so the phone can load apps quickly and wont have to waste time closing stuff. I dont think free ram is wasted ram
As said before, Android uses ram differently since it based upon Linux. If the entire ROM runs around 600-800mB and most of it gets loaded into RAM, this will leave you with 400-200mB free RAM but the entire OS is already loaded and ready to go! Once you load a RAM intensive application, Android/Linux kernel will free space for that application.
I believe GPU consumes an excess of RAM to handle this beast's resolution/size.
I have to go back to GB. Delay in apps opening is getting old compared to i777 daily driver.

This phone has plenty of ram, stop looking at the numbers and thinking your too high, don't listen to anyone that tells you that you need to kill tasks to make the phone better, they are all wrong!
Android works on a linux kernel, its not like windows and does not slow down (noticeably) when you multi-task, it manages its ram usage, it caches processes to save you time and battery next time. When it's ram is truly full (which I doubt yours ever is) it kills it's own apps.
So in summary unless android is closing all your apps when your trying to use them, stop worrying about ram!

Please everyone stop saying that Windows does not use the RAM for Cache.
Just because it doesn't show the values in Task Manager doesn't mean it isn't doing so. The Resource Monitor tells otherwise.
port76, if you're rooted you can throw out all the apps that you do not use (e.g. the whole Samsung-Cloud stuff, Samsung Accounts, AllShare, ...) which will give you several MB more of RAM available for caching.

It always happens that crashes and errors in the system and slow performance are the problems occurred because of the full or nearly full memory. Issue of memory overload the Smartphones are not immune. It can be avoided, if you know how to maintain phone’s storage space. If your phone has large memory then it will run very smoothly.
For performance of the phone to improve you can delete the cache from time to time which in turn will lead to the better performance of the phone. It can be done by using an application Apps2SD which clears both your cache and histories which are not necessary after some time. By clearing cache it frees up the internal space which there by leads to improved performance in the phone.
1.Try turn OFF (a)Sync(b)Wifi(c)GPS by this a constant process will be stopped and which will also improve your battery life and there by making it more use able, bcoz apps like gmail, contacts, maps constantly updates.
2.Uninstall apps which u don't prefer using. Further checking apps which eat more ram is to look in setting/apps/running and try freezing them.
3.Install task manager which provide operation of auto killing of apps in between time interval.

You can get performance by removing/freezing Unwanted apps, bloatware etc.
Using a Task Manager/Killer may give you a slow performance while Gaming etc.

But if you have organized set of application install with active task managers, it helps solves unecessary lags.
I have 200mb RAM available most of the time ... Installed 40+ apps packages other the default.
Frequently play games like Asphalt 7, Dead Trigger, ShadowGun DeadZone, Real football, Real Racing, GT Racing, CS Portable.

yes exactly, at the beginning i also tried to use taskmanager, but then i google Android RAM and found guides who say the same. and it seem logic for me. so just let it be. no need to use such apps
and custom roms can drain battery more fast,so dont wonder.
first you should check your mobile and wifi signals and stuff like that.

Thats not really true, taskmanagers doesn't make your phone faster, and free ram is not necessarily good, android manages the ram in another way than for an example Windows. Android kills or puts processes in a kind of freezed mode instead of leaving them running all the time, and when a app needs more ram, android will automatically kill apps so that you can play games and so on.
If you want more free ram, you should use Supercharger or Ram Manager Pro instead, because their alot better than using a taskmanager.

Switching off wifi and gps when not in use is just a godamn basic when you use a smartphone, i don't even see the point of opening a topic to say that. Are there still people keeping everything on all the time ?
Task managers are not required since 4.0 at least, if not 2.3 if i remember right. Free ram is useless on Android, i never got this obsession about having free Ram. Many 4.1 and 4.2 custom roms leave less free ram than the official 4.0 and are still way smoother and fast.

Adding swap ram (no need for much, 300 to 500 mb is ok) makes such a difference. Since I've started using it, I can multitask and I don't get the big slowdowns I was used to. No blank screen when returing to the launcher or horrible wait times under Chrome. From my experience, Android phones with 512mb of ram generally struggle a lot because they always have to erase and reload ram pages so they don't exceed it. I have a class 10 32gb sd card btw.
What can i do to solve that problem?

when i start the aplication and then press home to leave it on, after 2-3 minutes when i enter the aplication again to continue, the phone it loads from the begining like i started again
I would say this is normal, Android kicks Apps that you don`t use for some time automatically out of memory, so that you always have enough Ram left to use your current active application. Especially when you open Apps that need a lot of Ram. Android automatically will kick out Apps that are in the background except if they have an icon in the notification centre (That`s why Apps that are supposed to run in the background all have an icon in the notification area). If you want to keep Apps in memory check out the Xposed framework

Of course you do. You should also look at custom roms, as they're much more optimized, and that includes also more free ram. Don't expect awesome performance on pure stock rom .

Android is designed that way to take up almost all Ram available on the device because unused Ram is wasted Ram and when you are running out of memory Android begins to kick out applications that are in the background. That will happen with every Android phone. Maybe in the future when we reach 4 gb of Ram multitasking will have a Windows like feeling where you can leave a application in the background for hours and come back to it and use it as you left it.
And like JustArchi said, yes you need Root for the Xposed framework to work because it changes some stuff in some system files.

Your old wildfire S was based on Android 2.x I suppose, also with lower resolution, performance etc.
It's like comparing windows 95 to windows 7, windows 95 uses less, guess why.
Actually I have about 300 free ram + zram, so it's about 500 I'd say. And yes I have a lot of apps in the background, including one game .

100 mb free RAM is normal. With Android you don't need to worry about RAM ever! The Ram management on Android is very good and it knows exactly when you need more free Ram so it will then kick out applications that are currently in the background.

Nope without Root at least to my knowledge you can't do anything and with Root Xposed Framework is the only way I know of to keep certain Apps in memory.
On the other hand I can't see any disadvantage of rooting a phone, you can always get back to pure stock.

Mines a little better. about 600MB for OS and and 100MB for System.
I find the phone CAN be very sluggish as well. I think it has to do with the memory as well. Sometimes I start an app (ie. Google voice or ES file manager) and it pops up instantly. Sometimes it pops up but the screen is blank and it literally sits for maybe 5 seconds before anything happens. The camera can be worse. Sometimes even opening the app drawer gives a lag. Android Auto is just always slow. I've found that if I use an app killer and clear out some memory the phone becomes more responsive. Yes, the OS should automatically do this, but it doesnt seem to do a very good job. If I'm starting an app thats not in memory, it should make no difference whether the memory is empty or the OS needs to kill something to make room. Maybe the process of clearing out space in memory has some lag.
My next phone will definately need to have more than 2GB ram. I would switch phones in a heartbeat but I like the smaller form factor and nearly all other phones in the world are bigger.
Regarding facebook, I did this with my older phone because of how bad FB is, there is a "facebook lite" app you can get which is designed for lesser phones. It runs much better but it is more limited.
I'm waiting for a usable nougat rom to try. hopefully that will help

After nougat I am actually usually hovering around 300-500MB of free RAM at any given time of my day.
Get rid of these two disgusting apps and your phone will be so much better.
I also use FB, but only through the actual Chrome browser, and not the app.
I use 4 messengers - Viber, Skype, Telegram and Hangouts. Their ram and battery usage altogether is LESS Than just the facebook bloatware.

You can try to flash AndroPlus kernel + Kernel Adiutor app. I am currently on that build and it's working flawlessly - make sure you tweak the CPU and IO governors and the LMK (minfrees) to your liking. See what works best for you. Note that light LMK settings will make your phone fast after a reboot but slow as hell as time goes by. I have found that Moderate works best (implied anyway) for a good balance between multitasking and free memory
EDIT: This is for stock Nougat.
