Android os taking almost 1 gb of RAM

Mines a little better. about 600MB for OS and and 100MB for System.
I find the phone CAN be very sluggish as well. I think it has to do with the memory as well. Sometimes I start an app (ie. Google voice or ES file manager) and it pops up instantly. Sometimes it pops up but the screen is blank and it literally sits for maybe 5 seconds before anything happens. The camera can be worse. Sometimes even opening the app drawer gives a lag. Android Auto is just always slow. I've found that if I use an app killer and clear out some memory the phone becomes more responsive. Yes, the OS should automatically do this, but it doesnt seem to do a very good job. If I'm starting an app thats not in memory, it should make no difference whether the memory is empty or the OS needs to kill something to make room. Maybe the process of clearing out space in memory has some lag.
My next phone will definately need to have more than 2GB ram. I would switch phones in a heartbeat but I like the smaller form factor and nearly all other phones in the world are bigger.
Regarding facebook, I did this with my older phone because of how bad FB is, there is a "facebook lite" app you can get which is designed for lesser phones. It runs much better but it is more limited.
I'm waiting for a usable nougat rom to try. hopefully that will help
Remove Facebook. Remove Messenger.

After nougat I am actually usually hovering around 300-500MB of free RAM at any given time of my day.
Get rid of these two disgusting apps and your phone will be so much better.
I also use FB, but only through the actual Chrome browser, and not the app.
I use 4 messengers - Viber, Skype, Telegram and Hangouts. Their ram and battery usage altogether is LESS Than just the facebook bloatware.

You can try to flash AndroPlus kernel + Kernel Adiutor app. I am currently on that build and it's working flawlessly - make sure you tweak the CPU and IO governors and the LMK (minfrees) to your liking. See what works best for you. Note that light LMK settings will make your phone fast after a reboot but slow as hell as time goes by. I have found that Moderate works best (implied anyway) for a good balance between multitasking and free memory
EDIT: This is for stock Nougat.

I suspect there is a memory leak somewhere in the Sense UI or or in Android. When I boot my phone and kill all the apps I don't want running, I see 96MB of free ram. But after a day, with the same apps running, I am down to 46MB. This has the result (or so I assume) of making my phone feel more sluggish even though I'm running the same apps. Rebooting fixes all the sluggishness, and the Hero flies. Is anyone seeing the same thing?
I've been using it since launch and haven't had much lag.
You can always try a hard reset if its that bad.
Test it while using regular home and kill sense UI, see if there's a difference.
Well, I only get a lag from time to time. It's just that I noticed this increase in memory usage for no particular reason. I'll try to track down the offending apps if I can. I might try a hard reset though. Can't hurt.
I notice that the browser and my exchange "mail" process freeing up the most memory when I use Advanced Task Killer to "Auto-End" all non-excluded apps every hour.
Once, the mail app was taking up 30mb of RAM. It's not uncommon for the browser to take up 20 or more either. After a while, I also see what you mean, in that when I first start my phone with the same 6-9 system processes I have anywhere from 90-100MB free, and after a while when killing them, I can only get to 75-80 free.
Since I had the Mogul a while back, I tend to watch RAM closely since that phone only had a measly 20 free after boot.

I'm seeing the same thing as well. I use TaskPanel X to track memory usage and apps. Likewise the memory seems to slowly decline over time. Additionally even if I kill all the non-critical apps so it is like it was when it booted, I'm still about 30-40MB less than after a fresh boot.
I have a " samsung galaxy player 4 ". I was wounder how much memory ( RAM ) it has ?
I thought i had 512.... but its only showing like half that, why ?

The OS e.g. Android and Touchwiz use up about 100mb RAM for itself leaving only 300-400mb for the user. My HTC Desire S has 768mb but really i can only use 623mb hope this helps.

Is there a way to install a mod to free up some of the RAM the OS uses? Or a lighter android that doesn't use quite as much?

I would recommend a 3rd party launcher like ADW Launcher on Android market very light weight, also a app like memory booster which frees RAM. Their are no such mods to change the file system usage as changing the amount of RAM the system needs could result in a unstable device. I have a Galaxy wifi 5.0 with 512mb RAM and the 200mb left is enough for me without lag etc. hope this helps
I recommend using Advanced Task Killer. It has a very easy interface, and frees up ram quickly.
What does it say for ram on the player.... I have seen 377... and 345.
I have 345 and Im pretty pissed about it.
I have 342mb of RAM available. But I heard that around 100+ mb are dedicated to the gpu on the galaxy s phone, and the galaxy player has the same hardware so should be the same. So I think it still has 512mb of ram, but just 342 is usable by Android.
Have a look at the output of dmesg (e.g. run the following in a terminal and copy the resultant file to your PC to view: dmesg > dmesg_output.txt) and it tells you how much memory you have and how much has been set aside. Note you will probably want to reboot before you do this as otherwise the interesting messages have scrolled out of the kernel message buffer.
I've been using an app called Fast Reboot Pro. It appears to simply close processes that are running in the background. It then shows you how much memory was was freed. I hit every so often and especially when things appear to lag. Seem to work pretty well.

Gingerbread/Samsung has it's own task manager which in turn has it's own widget which does this. No need to install an app for this
I to use fast reboot, find it much more effective than what the player comes with. I also use ram manager pro witch is a very good tool to set different ram profiles, I like "balance (more free memory)" the best. I first select my profile, then I run fast reboot, very effective! The more you run fast reboot, the more memory it frees up, witch is great for big games like asphalt 6. Also, I use zeam launcher, very lightweight, perhaps the lightest, but still a great improvement over touchwiz. Another thing, NO LIVE WALLPAPERS is an absolute necessary! These things eat WAY more ram than they say on taskmanager. THEY CAN EAT 50+ MB OF RAM!! Also, services like widgetlockscreen and such will eat your ram. If you want to play a heavy game, go to running services and kill as many as you can, you can also clear cached apps by hitting the menu button in running services. Hope these tips help you to make the most of our small supply of ram!
Hmm, after more testing, it would appear that wifi burns around 25mb of ram when on! So, if your really short on ram, just turn on airplane mode to kill all antennas. I just played modern combat 3 with 25mb free ram throughout the whole level I had 190mb free originally, that game sure eats the stuff :s The CPU rides at 1000mhz through the whole game, lol, could always use some more of that stuff! That's what oc is for
You know, I really really really want to like HC on my View. I love the full pen support. I don't even mind the weird softbuttons and statusbar design that makes little sense.
But the DEAL KILLER for me is browsing. I mean, it is just nuts. I have a super fast wifi connection and I'm getting excellent signal but pages take FOREVER to load. I mean, like 10 seconds even for the most basic HTML page.
Why Android, why? What the hell did you do to HC that completely broke the browsing experience compared to GB and why didn't you ever fix it?
HC on the View = TRIPLE FACEPALM UTTER AND COMPLETE FAIL.

Yeah it's crazy. Ever since I flashed back to HC browsing takes for-e-ver to load.
Mine gets like that when i have to much apps open, download a task manager and kill the apps you not using, the more RAM you got free, the smoother it will be.
Gotta love it when folks post things as if every user is having the same problem when it's clear that's not the case. I think we discussed this before, but frankly if you have so much stuff active that you have to kill apps with a 3rd task killer to get your browser to work you have bigger issues.
The built-in memory management and task killer takes care of that very well unless you have badly misbehaving apps or other abnormal problems. If everything is normal in HC or even the older GB, there should always be approx 80% of RAM used. That's normal and if you kill things, android will just fill RAM to 80% again, over and over because that's how it's memory manager works and for good reasons.
And the browser in HC works just fine if you or bad apps don't screw the system up. Do makes sure you have some free space in flash for the browser cache and clear the cache occasionally.

Its true that there are always certain apps open, however if you open other apps and exit, they stay open. For instance my news app takes about 100 - 200 MB of ram when its open, if i exit, it stays open and occupies that amount, kill it. its EXTRA apps that you kill.
Just because you have a certain experience, doesn't mean it applies to everyone else.

I understand where you are coming from but the Theory behind DigitalMD's post is SPOT ON, the taskiller and builtin memory management within linux should not cause you any problems, also if a single app is taking up 100 - 200 mb of RAM there is something seriously wrong. What ROM are you using and if you can, please post a link to the ROM. I will try and help you out, i do not have a view but hopefully i can fix this
Not sure if it is wrong, just would like to get some explanation of this. Phone has bit less than 1GB ram available for apps and default behavior of Androuid should be to use it all for caching recently run proceses, because there is no difference if memory is free or taken - it uses same power.
I have Viper ROM 1.06 and using Nik3r kernel, tested with and without dataswap mod (128MB). Even tried to tweak Viper settings for minfree setting, using Multitasking ultimate profile. And still the same behavior. When I check available memory, it always sits around 750 used out of 980MB. Regardless what and how many apps I run.
Problem is, that when phone is not used for some time I see almost every time apps starting instead of fast switching from memory. Its mainly visible for me on FBReader, which I use to read ebooks every time I have little spare time. I pull phone from pocket, start FBReader and voila, it is starting from scratch loading book. Its 2-3s, but still. its relatively small app, shouldnt be killed most of the time thanks to system policies on free ram.
When I try to play with phone and run as many apps (start FBReader, home and run Chrome+load 2 tabs, run Camera, run Viber, run Tapatalk and back to FBReader) to force it to close my FBreader from memory, everything works fine and it swaps back in immediately. Even though checking Apps tab in settings shows memory usage about 750-800/980, not fully stuffed with cached apps (think its not showing correct numbers? Or not showing memory taken by apps in empty state?). But anyway. I give up, turn off my phone and let it be for some time. Then I check for example for SMS and would like to continue reading my book. And FBReader is loading as if it was closed. Why?
Seems to me like phone does cleaning of cached stuff in memory after some time when it is not used? Cant say precise when it happens, it just annoys me to see that system shows all the time around 750/980MB used and still is unable to keep my app in memory for longer period when it works fine if I test it directly.
Any ideas/tips/explanation?

I guess it's due to low memory killer.
when i start the aplication and then press home to leave it on, after 2-3 minutes when i enter the aplication again to continue, the phone it loads from the begining like i started again
I would say this is normal, Android kicks Apps that you don`t use for some time automatically out of memory, so that you always have enough Ram left to use your current active application. Especially when you open Apps that need a lot of Ram. Android automatically will kick out Apps that are in the background except if they have an icon in the notification centre (That`s why Apps that are supposed to run in the background all have an icon in the notification area). If you want to keep Apps in memory check out the Xposed framework

Of course you do. You should also look at custom roms, as they're much more optimized, and that includes also more free ram. Don't expect awesome performance on pure stock rom .

Android is designed that way to take up almost all Ram available on the device because unused Ram is wasted Ram and when you are running out of memory Android begins to kick out applications that are in the background. That will happen with every Android phone. Maybe in the future when we reach 4 gb of Ram multitasking will have a Windows like feeling where you can leave a application in the background for hours and come back to it and use it as you left it.
And like JustArchi said, yes you need Root for the Xposed framework to work because it changes some stuff in some system files.

Your old wildfire S was based on Android 2.x I suppose, also with lower resolution, performance etc.
It's like comparing windows 95 to windows 7, windows 95 uses less, guess why.
Actually I have about 300 free ram + zram, so it's about 500 I'd say. And yes I have a lot of apps in the background, including one game .

100 mb free RAM is normal. With Android you don't need to worry about RAM ever! The Ram management on Android is very good and it knows exactly when you need more free Ram so it will then kick out applications that are currently in the background.

Nope without Root at least to my knowledge you can't do anything and with Root Xposed Framework is the only way I know of to keep certain Apps in memory.
On the other hand I can't see any disadvantage of rooting a phone, you can always get back to pure stock.
